This report presents the methods and results performed pursuant to the U. S. Bureau of Mines contract entitled "Noise Abatement in Mining Machinery," Number H0122054. 2.1 Background Until the Congress of the United States created and passed Public Law 91-173, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, there were no directly-applicable standards for noise exposure for underground coal miners.1 Section 206 of this law, approved December 30, 1969, provided for standards of noise to be applicable to each coal mine. "Abstract This paper presents a ground improvement implementation case under a raft foundation of a local hospital. The selected ground improvement method is Wet Soil Mixing (WSM) technique. Soil mixing is increasingly applied to environmental applications and ground stabilization in geotechnical projects. In this technique, weak soil is mixed with cementitious slurry to improve the characteristics of the soil. The investigated case is one of the pioneering WSM ground improvement technique implementation cases in Turkey. The soil profile is mainly consisted of low plasticity clay. The effect of ground improvement is verified by a series of laboratory tests and four in-situ pile loading tests. The results of in-situ pile load tests on constructed soilcrete columns showed an acceptable factor of safety for the bearing capacity of the WSM columns. Measured bearing capacities in all four tested columns were nearly 20% higher than calculated values. In addition, a set of samples are obtained from the constructed columns and unconfined compression tests have been conducted. The laboratory test results indicate that the selected cementitious slurry has a sufficient efficiency to form the stabilizing columns.IntroductionIn the construction industry, stabilization of the soft ground by lime or cement stabilization is a widely used technique. In ground improvement systems deep mixing method (DMM) results in the same stabilization in deep portions of the soft soil profile by mixing cementitious slurry by means of mechanical augers. The pioneering cases of modern deep mixing application can be traced back to the year 1970 that was used for the stabilization of marine soils below the water level for the construction of harbor structures (Terashi et al., 1979). Nowadays, DMM is shown to be a proper and efficient method for the foundation of the structures and embankments on land. Some recent studies also reported that reasonable settlement reduction range in the stabilized soils under the foundation of structures (Archeewa et al., 2011). In addition to reduction of the structural settlement under service loads, deep mixing methods are also utilized when there is a concern with contaminated soil and groundwater or groundwater control (Andromalos and Bahner, 2003).Although, the DMM is shown to be a successful method in numerous studies for improvement of a wide range of soil types such as organics, fine-grained, and coarse grained material, it has some limitations (Archeewa et al. 2011, Jameson et al. 2010, Jelisic and Leppanen 2004, Lambrechts and Roy 1997, Meyersohn 2007, Miki and Nozu 2004, Olsson et al. 2008, O’Rourke and McGinn 2004, Stewart et al. 2004, Yang et al. 2011). High soil density and stiffness could damage deep mixing rigs. Engineering properties of the soilcrete columns changes based on the soil type, water content and other factors such as organic content of the available soil profile, so properties of the generated soilcrete should be verified by a set of rigorous testing procedures (Puppala et al. 2004).Based on the general classifications presented in the ground improvement literature, deep soil mixing method is divided into two main types of dry or wet mixing methods. In the dry and mixing methods compressed air and water are utilized as the binder transporter medium respectively (Moseley and Krisch, 2004). In addition, DMM methods can be categorized based on the employed mixing methods during the construction. In this study, the main aim is to present and elaborate on the selected method is known as Wet Speed Soil Mixing (WSSM)."

The Pilbara Block is a nucleus of Archaean rocks which lies in the North West Land Division of Western Australia, and it constitutes a mineral province that has been divided into two areas-the West Pilbara Goldfield and the Pilbara Goldfield.In the West Pilbara Goldfield two contemporaneous environments are represented by laterally equivalent volcanic and sedimentary successions which together comprise the Roebourne Group. The two successions are lithologically similar to the classical Warrawoona (volcanic) and Mosquito Creek (sedimentary) successions of the Pilbara Goldfield; but in the West Pilbara Goldfield there is no sign of the erosional break which separates the Warrawoona Succession from the Mosquito Creek succession. The Roebourne Group and the igneous rocks which have intruded it belong to the Archaean Pilbara System.Evidence of preconsolidation movement and igneous intrusion into unconsolidated sediment suggests that tectonism and igneous activity, localized along lines of fracture in an unidentified basement, beganbefore lithification was complete. Movement was primarily vertical, and persisted into the Lower Proterozoic.Vulcanicity and chemical sedimentation, accompanied by a diminution of detr:tal sedimentation, is thought to have caused a relative enrichment in the metal content of the middle part of the Roebourne Group; and the metal may have been remobilized during diagenesis and metamorphism, and localized in zones of dislocation formed both before and after consolidation of the sediments.INTRODUCTIONThe name "Pilbara" has been widely applied in the area under discussion, and to avoid confusion the various uses are summarized below.1. The 5-mile long Bay Tunnel is a major water supply facility to be constructed under the San Francisco Bay and adjacent marshlands between the San Andreas Fault to the west and the Hayward Fault to the east. The tunnel will have a two-pass lining system consisting of a watertight precast concrete segmental initial lining and a welded steel pipe final lining. Considering the Bay Tunnel?s location between two major active faults, the design earthquake produces a significant peak ground acceleration estimated at approximately 0.6g. To develop a design that can achieve the seismic performance objectives, full dynamic seismic analyses were performed using site-specific earthquake time histories. The analyses considered soil-structure interaction and an evaluation of the transverse and longitudinal effects of the design earthquake. This paper describes the seismic analyses and the design measures recommended to minimize potential adverse effects of the design earthquake on the tunnel final lining.

Geologic and technical factors such as coal seam thickness, stripping ratios, roof conditions, partings, faults, and size and geometry of the reserve block greatly impact the availability of Illinois coal for mining. Residential and commercial developments also restrict access to coal reserves in some areas. Despite the collective effects of these factors, large blocks of bituminous coal reserves suitable for efficient, low-cost underground mining remain available in Illinois.

South Africa?s primary electricity supplier, Eskom, provides incentives to reduce power demand during critical times by granting capital through a Demand Side Management programme. DSM encourages the end user to review and optimize energy consuming systems and use capital, provided by Eskom, to purchase or modify the equipment required to achieve a load-shift. As part of the DSM agreement the mine ultimately acquires the capital equipment and benefits from reduced power costs, but in return is required to sustain the load-shift tactic for up to five years. The paper focuses on one DSM tactic, main fan energy management. In this case, reduced air flows during selected peak and off peak periods, results in a substantial reduction in peak power demand. DSM incentives provided capital for automated main fan control as well as improved control of the mine ventilation systems. To examine the work in detail Gold Fields Ltd Driefontein gold mine near Johannesburg was chosen as a case study.

This investigation was undertaken to develop a more efficient copper smelting practice that would help meet the increasingly stringent antipollution standards. Continuous smelting to copper and a 0.8-to 5-percent copper slag using pure oxygen has been demonstrated for several hours at a time in a unique double furnace, which was devised to overcome the heat losses inherent in a laboratory furnace. The use of pure oxygen to effect the smelting and conversion of copper sulfide concentrate in a single unit to produce blister copper and a very high S02 concentration provides a much reduced gas volume for more economical and thorough sulfur recovery. Although the process was successfully demonstrated for several hours at a time, extended test work using longer runs will be required to balance the system and to obtain test data for adequately demonstrating its technical feasibility.

The purpose of the present communication is to put on record the discovery, in October, 1916, in the Howqua district, of a new locality for the occurrence of phosphatic rocks in Victoria, and to give a preliminary description of its characters and geological occurrence. Owing to the great use of superphosphates for agricultural purposes in recent years in Australia, search has been stimulated for the discovery of local and workable supplies of phosphatic rocks. Phosphorus is an element very widely distributed in igneous rocks, usually in the form of the mineral apatite, and also occurs in sedimentary rocks and in soils as a detrital constituent. Under these conditions of occurrence, however, the amount of P 205 present in a rock or soil seldom approaches, and very rarely exceeds, 1 %. Very occasionally it occurs in such a concentrated form as to constitute workable deposits. In such cases they are usually of organic origin. "CP-06 is an NATM cross passage which connects up-line and down-line metro tunnels near Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai. It lies completely in loose silty sand to dense sand with water table almost touching the ground surface after Chennai floods. Pre-grouting was done before excavation to seal the area and to ensure no-loose pockets. The heading was excavated successfully but while benching excavation huge water ingress started seeping out. Sand also permeated along with water which became unstoppable due to cavity formation and caused the up-line tunnel to sink considerably. A large grouting exercise was carried out with different grout materials and techniques both from the ground surface and inside of tunnel to stop the water ingress and stabilize the tunnel. This paper describes the chronology of events that occurred in the tunnel during CP-06 issue. It elaborates all the different grouting techniques involved in the whole process of the tunnel stabilization. It includes a finite element analysis using Rocscience RS2 9.0 software showing the possible cause of sand incursion with water from the CP invert which lead to the tunnel settlement. This paper also describes the after effects and the lesson learnt from the whole incident.INTRODUCTIONConstruction of Metro Rails has become the latest alternative to cope up with the transportation demand of the growing urban cities population. L&T SUCG JV constructed Chennai Rail Metro Phase II Contract UAA-04 which included design and construction of approximately 4 km of route length of underground mass transit railway including 3 underground stations. This package also includes 12 cross passages which are NATM tunnels connecting upline and down-line side of TBM tunnel for safe evacuation of passengers in case of emergency. As per NFPA guidelines, this is a mandatory structure and there should be atleast one cross passage in 244m tunnel length.CP-06 is a cross passage connecting upline and downline tunnel between Pachiyappa College Station and KMC Station, in Chennai Metro. During the construction of CP-06, heavy water seepage of around 450 liters per minute was encountered during second round of benching excavation after full heading was excavated. An inflow of around 12-15 cum of sand and silt was also observed inside the tunnel along with the seepage water, which created piping inside the TBM tunnel causing it to settle continuously with time. A huge effort was made to stop the water ingress along with loose sand which was causing the running tunnel to settle, involving all possible grouting methods and temporary support installation."

The dewatering of stable phosphatic clay suspensions generated from phosphate beneficiation in the central Florida is an issue of practical and theoretical importance. Because of its tiny particle size and surface charge, the phosphatic clay takes up to 20-30 years to settle in water and causes environmental, aesthetic, economic, and handling problems. An efficient and cost-effective dewatering/consolidation process for phosphatic clay is of great interest to the phosphate industry in Florida. In this paper, the consolidation and dewatering behavior of phosphatic clay was studied by use of anionic flocculants with and without sand addition. The effects of pH, initial polymer concentration, polymer dosage, polymer addition steps, and metal cations (K+, Ca2+, and Al3+) on the flocculation of phosphatic clay have been studied. Experimental results indicated that clay suspensions were well flocculated at pH 10.5 by DPW-1-1355 and Magnafloc 5250 flocculants acquired from Ciba Specialty Chemicals. Sand particles from phosphate flotation added to the clay slurry promoted flocculation and increased clay consolidation. K+ showed good performance to improve the flocculation characteristics by neutralizing clay surface charge. The adsorption mechanisms of flocculants on clay particles were also discussed in this paper.

Bulk materials handling systems are extensively used in the mining and minerals industry, where a fairly high incidence of structural failure is experienced, notwithstanding design compliance with appropriate standards. A number of case studies are explored to demonstrate how insufficient controls or protection systems have contributed to structural failures on mobile bulk handling equipment. The importance of design integration across engineering disciplines is highlighted. The revision of ISO 5049-1 (1994) is proposed to provide specific rules and guidelines pertaining to machine protection systems. It is further recommended that the structural design engineer of the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) fulfils a more prominent role during the final acceptance and handover of mobile bulk handling equipment, with specific reference to protection systems.

In recent years development of instruments and equipment for determining subsurface pressures and temperatures in. gas and oil wells has made it feasible to obtain information that eras not available in the past on many gas-production problems. The material presented in this report illustrates particularly the value of subsurface-temperature data in the study of subsurface leakage from gas wells. An abnormal decline in the shut-in pressure of the Lone Star Gasoline Co. A. Jones No. 1 gas well in the southern part of the Buffalo (Tex.) field was observed during an interval when a negligible volume of gas bras being withdrawn from the reservoir. Wellhead-pressure readings indicated that the shut-in pressure of the well declined from 2,295 pounds per square inch gage on February 3, 1937, to. 1,445 on February 12, 1935. Tests conducted by engineers of the Lone Star Gas Co. suggested that the subnormal pressure gaged on February 12, 1938, probably was not caused by a head of liquid in the well.

The Red Dog sediment-hosted zinc-lead deposit is located in the Brooks Range thrust belt in northwest Alaska, approximately 1000 km northwest of Anchorage. The mine constitutes the primary deposit in a 400 square kilometre district, which hosts several other mineral occurrences. All the known mineralisation is hosted by the Mississippian Ikalukrok Member, deep basinal shale of the Kuna Formation, part of a Devonian to Cretaceous sedimentary sequence. The rocks underwent intense deformation during the Brookian Orogeny in Middle Cretaceous time. Several thrust faults juxtapose the stratigraphy. The Red Dog mine is composed of four deposits which together contain 105 Mt in resources and reserves for a total resource exceeding 18 Mt of Zn metal. The mine is an open pit with 25 foot high benches. The biggest challenge is not the Arctic conditions, but metal extraction, due to the fine grained nature of the mineralisation and the variability of the ore. The mine produces Zn and Pb-Ag concentrates that are shipped to smelters around the world from the Red Dog port facilities during the short summer period. Ore mineralogy is generally simple and consists of sphalerite, pyrite, galena and marcasite. The deposits are generally overlain by decametre thick exhalative barite horizons and exhibit strong silicification, which locally obliterates the original textures. Although described as a world class Sedex-type deposit, a large portion of the mineralisation exhibits sub-surface replacement textures. Moreover, unlike most other Sedex deposits, the reconstruction of the basin is made difficult by the structural complexity of the district. To assist exploration in the district, several assumptions are made regarding the deposit settings relative to metal source, growth faults or crustal extension.

Geomechanical conditions of mining operation are determined by varying in time and space mechanical properties and initial state of the rock mass, by geological and technological factors. We define adaptive mining technology as a technology capable of adjusting to changing geomechanical conditions of mining operation. The ongoing research at Moscow State Mining University consisting of laboratory, theoretical, and field investigations aims at the development of theoretical basis and methodology of the system of geomechanical support of adaptive mining technology for the bedded salt deposit in the Urals, mined by room-and-pillar method. This system of geomechanical support is capable of - dynamically assessing mechanical properties and state of the rock mass varying within the panel; - mapping mechanical properties of the rock mass within the panel; - assessing and predicting mechanical condition of load-bearing elements of the rock mass and its changes due to the adjustment of the parameters of mining operation considering the in-situ geomechanical conditions.

Flame cutting and welding is one of the major causes of fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines. On May 20, 2006, a flame cutting operation at the Darby Mine No. 1 led to an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. On January 22, 2003, another explosion caused by flame cutting at the McElroy Mine resulted in three fatalities and three serious injuries. On June 22, 1999, a flame cutting and welding operation at the Loveridge Mine caused a fire that resulted in sealing of the mine for an extended period. Finally, on March 19, 1992, an explosion at the Blacksville No. 1 Mine that was caused by welding resulted in four fatalities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study on fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines that were caused by flame cutting and welding operations to determine the root causes of these types of fires and explosions. The methodology included interviewing mining personnel who perform flame cutting or welding operations in underground U.S. coal mines and visiting mines to observe these operations, and MSHA reports of investigations and accidents statistics were analyzed. The results were used to identify and compare differences between flame cutting and welding practices and techniques in small and large mines, Eastern and Western mines, low seam and high seam mines, room and pillar and longwall mines, and between experienced miners and new miners. As a result of this study, best practices and interventions were developed to reduce the number of fires and explosions caused by flame cutting and welding. This paper provides a summary of this work. The data developed in this study establishes the technical and economic feasibility as well as the improved health and safety characteristics of a novel mining concept. The mining concept is a modified longwall technique using prestressed tendons for roof control, longhole blasting for fragmentation, and remote mucking. The technical feasibility was found to be dependent on the state of the art, while economic feasibility was found to be dependent on particular minerals and on supply and demand. Since these two conditions are not necessarily coincident in time the data is presented in the report in a manner that enables the mining engineer to perform a rapid preliminary technical and economic analyses for a specific property.

From the time of its establishment in 1910, the Federal Bureau of Nines has studied the carbonization of coal, and a considerable part of this effort has been devoted to investigations in the so-called low-temperature carbonization range, 450° to 700° C., in which there is minimum decomposition of primary products and maximum yield of Liquids - a yield two to threefold the amount produced in high-temperature carbonization at 900° to 1,200° C, The solid residue, char, or coke, produced in low-temperature carbonization is 70 to 80 percent of the coal charged and may be used directly as a smokeless fuel or for blending with coals to produce metallurgical coke, Although some thought was given to the use of tar and to the illuminating value of gas derived from lm-temperature carbonization, the main emphasis in early work of the Bureau of Mines was on the preparation of smokeless fuel, especially for home use, For example, a carbonizer was designed and operated for making char and briquets from North Dakota lignite without recovery of by- products; however, the shortage of high-temperature coal-tar products in the United States during World War I had already indicated the potential usefulness of low-temperature tar.

THE Phillips River gold and 'copper field is situated on the south coast of Western Australia, about 200 miles east of Albany, 180 miles west of Esperance, and: 250 miles south of Southern Cross, forming the southern extremity of what Mr. H. P. Woodward classes as the fourth belt of Pre-Cambrian rocks, and the first auriferous belt, whicf extends northward through Southern Cross, Mount Magnet, and Cue. The field may be considered the premier copper producer of the State. The first mineral discoveries were made about 1892; when gold, copper, and iron pyrites were found; but, owing to the isolation of the district and the scarcity of water, both in the locality and on the route thereto, little work was done for some years. In1899, however, payable gold reefs were opened up, and the district began to attract attention.The southern portion of the district is composed of limestone and sandstone rocks, forming the coastal series, and is for the most part flat, broken only by a few low hills and ridges, except to the west, where Cape Barren and Eyre's Range stand out...

One of the largest scale uses of a multiple, high-strength steel bar tiedown system is described. Tiedowns were installed to resist hydrostatic uplift forces acting on a section of the Interstate Highway Route I-90 southern approach roadway to the Third Harbor Tunnel, in Boston, Massachusetts. Site specific information is discussed regarding design, testing, and installation of Tiedowns. Conclusions are presented regarding the overall performance of this system and the application of this type of tiedown system on future projects.
