Mountain Top Removal (MTR) mining started in West Virginia nearly thirty years ago. This surface mining method can extract multiple coal seams as thin as a few inches thick with total recovery and minimum rock dilution in very steep mountainous terrain. It is highly efficient even if coal seams are in close proximity and small in aerial extent. Consequently, MTR has been widely used in the Central Appalachian Coalfield (mainly Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia) for the past thirty years with great success. In that respect, there has been no demand for research and little scientific research has been performed to investigate its impacts on the surroundings in the history of MTR mining. However, in the past two years the debate over the MTR mining has grown quickly and in times become very intensely. This paper describes chronologically the issues raised by various parties, legal actions, its impacts on mining permit application and research projects developed to address the issues.

It has been suggested that reduction of the iron and manganese phases as far as FeO and MnO is preferred for the complete liberation and selective reduction of the copper, nickel and cobalt oxides in manganese nodules. The oxygen partial pressure/temperature regime suitable for this purpose has been delineated. Free-energy minimisation and thermogravimetric results indicate that the requisite conditions can be achieved if more than 10% of neutral oil is used at temperatures greater than 923 degrees C. Neutral oil content, temperature and roasting time have been optimised to maximise leaching recoveries of Cu, Ni and Co: up to 96% of Cu and Ni and up to 85% of Co can be recovered if 15% of neutral oil is used as a reductant at 973 K for 90 min

Roof falls in coal mines typically occur in or around intersections and this has not changed in the last two decades. This research develops an improved scientific understanding of stress distribution and associated failure behavior around 4-way and 3-way coal mine intersections. Three-dimensional numerical analyses were performed to determine factors that influence intersection stability. The analyses used Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Failure zones around 3-way and 4-way intersections were developed. Intersection span and horizontal stress have a major influence on intersection stability. For the 4-way intersection, pillar corners across the intersection fail first and lead to progressive failure of immediate roof and floor layers. The mechanism of failure is similar for the 3-way entry but the shape and extension of failed zones differ. Coal ribs mostly fail due to tensile stress, while roof and floor strata fail due to shear stresses. Rib corners fail due to a combination of shear and tensile stresses. In addition to stress distribution; safety factor contours analysis was performed to assess stability of intersections.

Comparative data from ASTM method of test E-162 and large-scale trials in the Experimental Mine show that the flame-spread quality of brattice cloth and other ventilation control materials can effectively be evaluated by either method. Materials having a flame spread index of 25 or less, as determined by the simpler and more economical laboratory test ASTM E-162, do not present a serious fire hazard when used in coal mines.

"A number of Reports of Investigations pertaining to the extraction of potash from cal¬cined polyhalite have been made by various members of the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines. These reports describe results obtained in the study of samples of polyhalite (2CaS04.K2S04.MgS04.2H20) from deposits of possible com¬mercial importance in Texas and New Mexico.3Storch and Clarke6 in their initial paper presenting data on the properties of Texas polyhalite demonstrated the desirability of calcination and subsequent hot extraction with water as a satisfactory pronedure for treatment of this potash-bearing salt. Their preliminary data have been supplemented by an additional report7 dealing more particularly with the leaching of raw and calcined polyhalite with water and with saturated sodium chloride solu¬tions. Further data8 have been reported as a result of experiments made in a small labora¬tory rotary-tube furnace under various calcination and extraction conditions. Hot water was used as the leaching solution in all of these tests.In addition to the data on calcination and extraction, two processes as proposed by Storch and Clarke have been published by Wroth,9 and more recently a number of very promising processes have been proposed by Storoh and Fragen.10"

The following paper describes the refining practice for the production of lead, silver and gold at the works of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd., Port Pirie, South Australia.The refinery is situated on the wharf frontage and is built parallel with it. The refinery occupies an area of approximately 3380 square yards. (Fig. 8)There are two buildings, one containing the softening and de-silverising sections, measuring 225 ft. x 57t ft., while the other building, which measures 225 ft. x 90 ft. covers the de-zincing, lead moulding, retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections. (Fig. 1)The retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections are completely isolated from the rest of the plant by strong small-mesh wire gratings welded to steel uprights. The dore parting plant and generator room are further isolated by a brick wall, built up to the roof. The two main buildings are steel structures, with outer walls and roof of "Robertson" corrugated sheeting; the side and end walls are open for some distance above the ground, and this, coupled with the high roof which is 50 ft. from ground level, ensures the free access of air and light. Conditions are such that operators work in a clear atmosphere.

"At the Big Five wetland, which was built to treat drainage from a metal mine, encouraging results have attributed to sulfate reduction. Cu and Zn were reduced to below detection limits of 0.50 mg/L, Fe was reduced by at least 90% to below 3 mg/L, and the pH was raised from below 3 to above 6. The study showed that treatment was primarily through microbial processes within the substrate and that plants were not needed to insure success.Constructed wetlands can be taken through design and proofing stages, and into operations scale in a meaningful time frame for on-line acid drainage remediation. In staged design, laboratory experiments are initiated to determine reasonable substrate materials for remediation of a particular drainage. When a reasonable substrate is found, bench scale experiments are initiated as the next stage in the design. In these studies, removal efficiency, permeability, and flow are analyzed to identify candidate substrate which will support sulfate reduction and be hydraulically reasonable. Using this design method at one site, an acid drainage of pH 2.5 was raised to a pH of above 7. Total heavy metal concentrations in this drainage exceeded 900 mg/L. In the pilot constructed wetland Cu, Zn, and Fe were reduced by 99%.Determining how well these anaerobic cells operate in the winter is done at the pilot plant site in Idaho Springs, CO. It's been found that over the last four winters, those cells that emphasize anaerobic removal within the substrate have operated continuously and effectively the year round. Winter operation is aided by the fact that the water temperature of the acid drainage is always between 14 and 16° C, and the cell can be readily insulated from the cold. Activity of the sulfate reducing bacteria may decrease during the winter. However, it appears that organic complexation of metals helps to maintain low concentrations of metals in the effluent."

"Blasting is a principal step in the surface mining process for breaking and, in the case of overburdencasting, moving rocks and minerals. As many surface mines are coming to the end of theiroperational life, blasting can once again play an important role through the earthmoving operationsrequired to rehabilitate the minesite. Since blasting is such an energetic and destructive process, itis difficult initially to envisage its use in rehabilitation. However, blasting has found applications inmany civil engineering projects aimed at rehabilitation, including well digging, channelling and soilcompaction. For surface mine rehabilitation, the main purpose of earthmoving operations is toproduce a stable landfonn that will sustain revegetation. In particular, blasting can be applied toreducing the slope of steep walls left by quarrying and open pit mining through a modified form ofthe overburden casting technique. Blasting can also be applied to breaking up pit floors andbenches to speed and improve revegetation of these areas (subsoiling)."

Investigation of the Classification Operation in a Coal Pulverising Vertical Spindle Mill Coal pulverisation in power plants is a major electrical energy consumer. In 2006 more than 41 per cent of world electricity generation was from coal where pulverisers use 0.5 to 1 per cent of gross generation. Therefore, pulverisers are an important target for optimisation not only for reducing costs of power generation but also for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. A better understanding of the operation of pulverisers is an essential requirement for their optimisation. However, little information is available, other than operating experience, on the performance of pulverisers and how these react to changes in operational variables. This study investigates the effect of changes in coal and airflow feed rates on the classification performance that occurs in an industrial scale ball-and-race vertical spindle mill in which the pulverisation and classification processes are linked together due to the separator classifier being an integral component within the pulveriser. In order to decouple the breakage and classification processes, samples were cut from upward flowing streams through sampling ports drilled on the pulveriser body at different locations. Specific sampling tools were developed. Samples collected from the pulveriser were size and density fractioned to distinguish the differences in behaviour of the components, namely coal and mineral matter. The coal flow rates on dry basis within the mill and around the separator classifier were calculated by mass balancing the multi-component data. The difference in classification behaviour of components during pneumatic transport was confirmed. The response of the circulating load in the mill (~600 to ~1100 per cent) as well as the dependency of fineness of the streams to the operating variables was demonstrated. The approach taken in this study has proved that development of a classification model for a vertical spindle mill pulverising non-homogeneous materials, eg coal, requires treating these materials as multi-component/composite substances.

Oxygen gas bubbles generate on anode during Pb electro-deposition process in PbSiF6-H2SiF6 aqueous solutions at room temperature. Cell voltage varies as the bubbles formed on the anodes surface. The bubble layer on the anode makes a voltage drop that consumes energy in the Pb process, which can be reduced by applying ultrasound on the anode. The effects of ultrasound frequency and anodic current density were investigated with ultrasound on and off, alternatively during the Pb electrode-position process. The removing of the gas bubbles were recorded in association with a drop in the cell voltage. The cell voltage can be lowered by 4% - 6% with ultrasound, which has potential for energy saving in Pb production.

The cyclic steam injection process has become the most widely applied and most successful thermal recovery technique in use today.1-4 Normally, steam stimulation is repeated several times during the life of a project. The problem is to select the optimum number and size of steam treatments so that the profits realized over the entire life of the project are maximum. Obviously, operating costs rise directly with the frequency and amount of steam injection. Operating efficiency, on the other hand, can be adversely affected if the amount and frequency of stimulation are insufficient. Thus arises a multistage decision problem; that is, a decision must be made at each sub-period (day, for example), as to whether steam should be injected, and, if so, how much. It is desirable that these decisions be made in such a way as to secure maximum net profit before taxes. This can be achieved by dynamic programming. To use dynamic programming, we must be able to predict not only the production rate-time curve resulting from a given stimulation, but also how changes in stimulation policy will affect this curve. In this study, the effect of steam injection on well performance is estimated on the basis of a simple model that takes into account both steady-state and transient flow. Oil production rate is calculated for both types of flow, and the larger of the two values is used. This allows the calculation to change to radial steady-state flow at such time as this mechanism becomes more effective than the transient mechanism. We propose to show how dynamic programming can be used to optimize the steam soak process with respect to net profit. For this, a mathematical representation of the steam soak technique is necessary. A further objective, therefore, is the formulation of a mathematical model capable of realistically simulating the physical process. Oil Production Response Model The advantage of using a mathematical model is its generality and ease of manipulation. However, the model must be an accurate representation of the physical process, for a solution derived from a model can be no better than the model itself. The question now arises as to how well the model should be expected to simulate reality. In general, the simplest model should be tried first, for additional accuracy is apt to require additional cost and time. Also, the search for a high degree of accuracy may yield only greater complexity and difficulty without yielding significantly better results. With this in mind, we kept our model as simple as possible, yet generally representative of the actual physical process. The number of state variables is limited to three, and stochastic variations in the parameters are ignored. As a consequence, use of this model should be restricted to cases in which the underlying assumptions are not severely violated. In

"The Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, a government of India enterprise, has constructed iron ore mining, crushing, handling and concentrator facilities at Kudremukh, in southwest India. Concentrate produced is pumped 65 km to dewatering, storage and ship-loading facilities which were built at the same time at the sea port of Mangalore.A computer-based distributed process control system was implemented for all operations at Kudremukh and to interface with and monitor the Mangalore plant.The control system is examined from various standpoints, beginning with a description of its architecture, method of process input/output connection, and major hardware items.Software considerations and process applications are then looked at, with a review of the integration of the computer vendor's system software with user-developed applications programming. A control example of crusher operations is provided.Following the descriptive segment is a discussion of the design considerations and decision factors involved in the implementation of such a system considering the type of process and the remote nature of the installation site. It ends with a review of actual operating experience and conclusions regarding both this system and future similar applications.ScopeThe following is a discussion of the computer-based process control system applied for the Kudremukh Iron are Company Limited's ore handling, concentrating and shipping facilities located in South India.A general description of the process and plant equipment will be followed by an examination of the control system from the points of view of hardware and signal flow, software requirements, design considerations, implementation logistics and operating experience. Iron Road Limited (IRD) is currently developing the Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) at Warramboo on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The project consists of a 30 year open pit mine, magnetite processing facilities, standard-gauge railway and deep water, Cape class capable port. Major South Australian government approvals have been received and funding arrangements confirmed.The 4.5 Bt Mineral Resource (3.7 Bt Ore Reserve), the largest in Australia and among the largest globally, is to be mined to produce 24 Mt/a high-grade, 67 per cent Fe, magnetite concentrate. This in-demand, premium product has a P80 of ~100 µm, suitable for both direct sinter feed and an additive in pelletising.The extensively drilled, homogeneous orebody is unique in both geology and mineralogy; only averaging 15 per cent Fe yet coarse-grained with almost negligible phosphorus and sulfur content. This has allowed significant opportunities to tailor the mining method to the orebody, utilising both optimised blasting as first stage comminution, as well as in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) to reduce the heavy haulage diesel fleet and optimise the pit shell.Approximately 1 Mt/d of total material, ore and waste, is required to be moved from the pit daily, introducing materials handling challenges, overcome by a flexible IPCC set-up, multiple overland conveyors and an exacting mine plan. Non-conventional waste and tailings storage is utilised to allow for significant water savings, progressive rehabilitation and minimisation of land impact.The processing facilities utilise both the magnetic and density properties of the magnetite to beneficiate the ore. The coarse-grained nature of the ore is exploited to minimise comminution yet still liberate a high quality product. Utilisation of modular construction methods allows risk reduction during construction and reduced pumping requirements during operation.This paper highlights the uniqueness of the CEIP, with focus on the mineralisation of the orebody, and the beneficial impacts this has on both the proposed mining method and processing. "INTRODUCTIONTeck-Corona Operating Corporation's David Bell Mine is located 35 Km east of Marathon, Ontario. In conjunction with its 1000 tonne per day gold concentrator, the company operates an effluent treatment plant for the treatment of mill, mine and site effluents prior to environmental discharge. This paper provides a brief overview of treatment strategies and methods, employed to detoxify final effluent.WATER MANAGEMENTThe tailings impoundment basin, located 3 Km south of the plant site, provides storage capacity for all process effluents and site run-off. Basin supernatant (reclaim water) is recirculated to the plant for reuse as process water, in order to minimize fresh water consumption. As site run-off and limited fresh water intake exceed natural losses due to evaporation, reclaim water in excess of process requirements is passed through the effluent treatment (ET) facility to control tailings basin level by providing regulated discharge of environmentally acceptable effluent. (Figure 1)PASSIVE TREATMENTTo reduce treatment costs and burden on the ET facility, reclaim water is fed to the plant to take maximum advantage of natural destruction processes occurring in the tailings basin.These include: volatilizationphotodecompositionbiological oxidation and precipitationstorm water dilutionConcentrator recovery techniques (Figure 2) are directed toward maximizing gold recovery while limiting the addition and extraction of contaminants requiring disposal and eventual treatment.Currently ore ground to 90% -200 mesh is pre-aerated at pH 9.0 with lime for 18 hours prior to 30 hours cyanidation at pH 9.5 with low cyanide ion excess (70 ppm).Pre-aeration passivates cyanicides prior to cyanide contact. This reduces cyanide consumption and the formation of cyanide complexes. In conjunction with recovery requirements low pH is maintained to retard the dissolution of stibnite into its antimony and sulfide components."

The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30,000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet.A typical assay for a monthly period is 14·40/0 Pb., 5·6 ozs. Ag., and 11· 60/0 Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and 'zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.MINING METHODSMining practice throughout the field varies only in minor details. The ore-bodies forming the Broken Hill Lode lie within complex folds arranged along a shear and vary in size and mineralogical associations, but all the mines have similar types. Some of the ore-bodies have weak walls, but the chief difficulty in mining is caused by "heads" and "flaws" in the ore.Besides these local weak areas there are ground movements-referred to later-of varying magnitude extending throughout the central portion of the lode where the large ore-bodies, several hundred feet wide, approached the surface.

Economic Importance of Gasification of Fuel and Brief Outline of Development of Underground Gasification of Coal in the U.S.S.R. The underground gasification of fuel offers a number of economic and social advantages, principally the following: 1. Full automation of labor-consuming coal-mining processes, which resist complex mechanization and automation, particularly shaft mining. 2. Elimination of hard, dangerous, and often unhealthful mining work. 3. Creation of hygienic conditions for personnel employed in gas production, as well as for those in boiler rooms using the gas. 4. Possibility of automation of complex production processes of thermal-electric powerplants using underground gas with economic installations for steam production. 5. Economic operation of thermal-electric powerplants constructed in the areas of underground-gas production. 6. Release of railroads from the burden of transporting fuel. 7. Extension of the power base of some areas in need of fuel and of the economy as a whole due to use of fuel deposits not amenable to normal mining practices. 8. Reduction of capital investments per unit of energy produced in the form of fuel. 9. Substantial increase in general labor productivity. 10. Possibility of substantial reduction in the cost of fuel produced and of electric power produced from underground gas.
