The Institute maintains a dual relationship with students: (1) an individual relationship with a Student Associate; and (2) a relationship with local organizations of students, known as Affiliated Student Societies or Student Chapters. 1. Colorado School of Mines The, forty-first annual commencement exercises of the Colorado School of Mines were .held at Golden, Colo., on Friday, May 28, 1915. Dr. Lucien I. Blake delivered an address on Epochs in Science. The degree of Engineer of Mines was conferred upon 30 men, and the degree of Master of Science on one man. At the recent annual meeting of the Mining Engineering Society, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, officers were elected as follows: President, K. M. Sully; Vice-President and Treasurer, D. M. McRae; Secretary, H. Solakian. The Student Auxiliary Society of the A. I. M. E. at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kan., has elected officers as follows for the year 1915-16: President, Harry E. Crum; Vice-President, Leland E. Fiske; Secretary and Treasurer, Ben A. Sweeney.

The October meeting of the Mining and Geological Society, Lehigh University, was held in the Eckley B. Coxe Mining Laboratory, and was called to order at 8:15 p. m., by President R. L. McCann. The Students' Organization of the Michigan College of Mines was recognized as an Affiliated Student Society by the Board of Directors of the Institute, at a meeting held on April 28, 1916. At the College of Mines, University of Washington, 30 students and instructors took part in the annual spring excursion early in April. Studies were made of the new reverberatory and casting furnaces at the Tacoma smelter, the Du Pont powder works located on Puget Sound and the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company's mine and mills on Howe Sound, near Vancouver, B.C. The Britannia mills are using Hancock jigs, Burchart tables and Minerals Separation flotation cells to effect a high recovery on low-grade chalcopyrite ore. The Mining Club, University of. The Board of Directors, at its meeting on March 22, 1918, extended an invitation to the American .Institute of Metals to become the Institute of Metals Division of-the American Institute of Mining Engineers in accordance with the terms of By-Law VII. This invitation was presented to the membership of the American Institute of Metals for letter ballot, and, at the meeting of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers on April 26 191 ,it-was reported that the replies had been in favor of accepting the invitation. Recently in Germany, novel artificial humus in combination with water-storing hydrogels has successfully been tested as soil improving material in pot experiments. The novel artificial humus (NOVIHUM®) is derived from lignite through oxidative ammonolysis. The product contains c. 5.5% nitrogen. Using NOVIHUM® as fertiliser, variable amounts of the contained nitrogen are gradually available to the plant, depending on the hydrolysis rates of the different N-compounds. NOVIHUM® is a unique combination of long-term fertiliser and stable humus. The tested hydrogel is a polyacrylate/poly-amide copolymer, which is able to improve the water holding capacity of the soil and to retard significantly desiccation. In May 2000, in Germany (Aue region), an experimental site was set up under extremely difficult growing conditions for trees (Quercus petraea) on a uranium spoil pile of the mining company WISMUT Ltd. The oak plots treated with NOVIHUM® and hydrogel showed increased total increment-values, which mainly are the result of the second growth phase. Obviously, these plants profit from the favourable physical parameters of the substrate and the use of the novel artificial humus as nitrogen source. The oak trees can better use the plant-available NH4-nitrogen released from the artificial humus during the planting year. In Greece, an experiment was set up in December 2000 aiming to the afforestation (Pinus nigra, Abies cephalonica) of a bauxite spoil pile of SILVER & BARYTE ORES MINING Co. S.A., on the Parnassus Mountain. The scope was to demonstrate, that the above soil improving materials are also appropriate for the recultivation of sites under extreme climatic and orographic conditions. The first results revealed, that where NOVIHUM® and hydrogel were combined, plant growth was greater than the average. The one-year results of the experiments fulfil our expectations concerning the application of NOVIHUM® in combination with hydrogel for the afforestation of problematic sites, such as the south-exposed steep slopes of the spoil piles of uranium mining. They may represent the most detrimental sites for afforestation in Europe.

MIBC (methyl-isobuthyl carbinol) was previously shown to enhance significantly sylvite flotation when used at the stage of preparation of amine dispersions. In this paper Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is used to study the effect of MIBC on deposition of octadecylamine (ODA) on the surface of mica. The AFM images indicate that amino terminated, and therefore hydrophilic, deposits of ODA are observed on the mica surface in the ODA dispersions free of MIBC. In the presence of MIBC a methyl terminated (hydrophobic) monolayer is obtained on the mica surface. The transition between the monolayer and bilayer phases is due to the presence of MIBC. Experiments carried out in distilled water reproduced the results obtained from the brine. Working in pure water instead of brine simplifies the preparation conditions and the analysis by AFM.

Direct force measurements were conducted using an atomic force microscope (AFM) to study the mechanism of copper-activation of sphalerite. The force measurements were conducted between a sphalerite plate and a hydrophobic glass sphere in xanthate solutions of various pHs. The glass sphere may represent the hydrophobic air bubbles interacting with minerals during flotation. The force measurements conducted with unactivated sphalerite in 10') M KEX solutions did not show the presence of hydrophobic force. On the other hand, the results obtained with copper-activated sphalerite at pH 9.2 and 4.6 showed strong hydrophobic forces. However, the results obtained at pH 6.8 showed no evidence of hydrophobic force, which provides an explanation for the difficulty in floating sphalerite at neutral pH.

Pull-off forces were measured for 8-9 pm diameter polystyrene (PSI particles on smooth spin- coated polystyrene films and hexadecanethiol (HDT) self-assemble monolayer surfaces using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Three parameters were controlled during experimentation: (i) the maximum applied load pressing the particle onto the substrate was varied from 50 to 4,000 nN, (ii) loading/unloading rate for the particle to attach and separate from the substrate varied from 0.01 to 9.3 Hz, and (iii) contact time for particle to reside on the substrate surface before retracting the particle to separate it from the surface changed from I µsecond to 200 seconds. the pull-off forces increased with increasing applied loading, increasing loading/unloading rate, and increasing contact time for the PS particle on PS film and on HDT monolayer. The PS particles experience elastic and plastic deformations duringpull-08 force measurements. Plastic deformation is primarily associated with flattening of surface irregularities. The results obtained in this research suggest that the particle-substrate contact areas of the magnitude comparable to those predicted by the JKR contact mechanical model can be reached in the AFM experiments by using high applied loads and long particle-substrate contact times. This result re-opens the prospect of' using AFM for studying surface energies of deformable micro-particles, even if the micro-particles have small irregularities on the surface.

An AFMAG survey was flown in 1968 over the Upper Nelson River area, Manitoba. The flight direction was northwest-southeast and flight spacing was 2 miles. In the Cross Lake Subprovince, AFMAG showed that an isolated peridotite outcrop was part of a dike that extended over 80 miles. Diabase dikes are not always marked by an anomaly, but isolated cross-overs, when used in conjunction with geological and magnetic data, permit their extrapolation. Anomalies coincide with areas of sulphide mineralization. In the Flin Fion Subprovince, known and unknown northeast-trending faults are detected. The Berry Creek fault was extended south through Tramping lake, then under the Paleozoic cover. Conductors were detected at, or near, the axes of major synclines within Amisk and Snow Group sediments. Granitic terranes have low conductivity and, because they are characterized by smooth AFMAG profiles, they can be delimited. AF.MAG is being recognized as a geophysical method that can aid geological mapping and interpretation. Its most important contribution to the geologist will be in regions where out-crops are sparse.

13.8-1. Introduction. Table 13.8-1 shows that production from the African continent is an important part of total world mineral production. In three of the major particular resources listed, diamonds, gold, and cobalt, African production accounts for considerably more than half the world output. Overall, South Africa including South West Africa plays a dominant role in the mineral economy of Africa, other than in petroleum production. Table 13.81 also shows that much of the production is won by surface mining methods. In addition to the minerals listed in Table 13.8-1, Africa is a main world source for the following minerals: [Beryl 33% of total world production Columbium-tantalum 50%" " 1' Platinum group metals 20% l' " 11 Corundum 55%" " " 11 Vermiculite 30% (' " (6 Uranium oxide 15 0/, of free world production] South Africa and Rhodesia together account for nearly all of this production, except for columbium (niobium) of which Nigeria is the main producer. Thus the importance of southern Africa as a major mineral province can readily be appreciated. The consequences of serious political or military conflict between white-dominated southern Africa and the rest of the continent would be grave indeed, particularly for the West whose financial and economic interest in Africa as a whole is very large. The development of mineral resources in Africa involves the same basic elements as are involved anywhere else in the world: exploration, drilling and sampling, metallurgical assessment, and economic evaluation before, if it is justified, a prospect is brought to the productive stage. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration’s origins can be traced back to 1871. This was when 22 Pennsylvania coal mining engineers founded the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME). The organization’s objective was to “promote the arts and sciences connected with economic production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of those employed in those industries by all lawful means.” Metallurgy and Petroleum were added to the AIME name in 1919 and 1956, respectively. Divisions of AIME were formed throughout the following years in recognition of the increasing trend toward specialization among mineral industry engineers. At the time, SME’s divisions consisted of the Coal Division (1930, now known as the Coal and Energy Division), the Industrial Minerals Division (1935), the Mineral and Metallurgical Processing Division (1948) and the Mining and Exploration Division (1949). The Environmental Division was created in 1997.
