His father was a merchant navy Captain who served during WWII and during David’s early years his family lived in Dublin and Donegal where David went to the local elementary school. In 1954 he moved to London with his parents and attended Highgate School before commencing metallurgy at the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, London in 1960.

The disposal of arsenic from copper operations possess various health, environmental and processing problems. There are basically two areas of concern. The first being the disposal or treatment of smelter flue dusts and the second the removal of arsenic from refinery electrolytes. A number of treatment options have been proposed including the addition of soluble arsenic wastes to copper heap and dump leaching solutions. This approach will allow arsenic to be reintroduced to the ore via Solvent Extraction (SX) raffinate associated with hydrometallurgical operations. Knowledge of the attenuation behavior and mechanism during leaching is important in determining the long term stability of arsenic and the success of this approach. Parameters, such as uptake capacity, pH, particle size and solution chemistry have been investigated. Arsenic attenuation has been examined using column leaching with experiments employing both continuous flow and pulsed additions of As(V). In the initial stages of leaching, the attenuation of arsenic appears to depend on the pH and iron concentration in the effluent. Arsenic stability in the copper oxide ore has been examined with rinses of progressively lower pH.

Current conditions in the copper market demand that mine and plant operators make budgeted production targets at the lowest possible unit costs. For those companies bringing new production capacity on-line, achieving budgeted production levels as quickly as possible after start-up is vitally important to minimize unit costs and to begin a positive cash flow. Whether the objective is to simply improve unit costs or successfully start-up a new, complex plant, success will be strongly influenced by .the skill levels of the operators :and supervisors. The only way to assure return on plant investment, and to survive during depressed metal prices, is to ensure that plant operators have the knowledge to effectively run the plant. Technology available in computer-based, multimedia training systems, including: interactive animation, videos, voice-overs, schematics, and text can now be used to train operators at their own pace using plant-specific information. Additionally, it has been shown that learning through multimedia provides a higher degree of long term retention than more traditional learning methods.

"Indonesia is one of the world leaders in palm oil production. Palm oil industry is an industry to be considered when it comes to environmental impacts. This paper utilizes three step approaches. First, a material flow analysis of palm oil related industry was conducted in Indonesia. Second, a factory visit survey was conducted for getting information on environmental impacts of plantation and CPO mills. Third, a LCA study was made for a model Indonesian CPO mill in several bio-waste treatment options. Main findings were that, first; over 70% of FFB was bio-wastes generated from CPO mills. Second, some mills introduced a zero emission bio-waste policy. However, untreated bio-wastes in the zero emission policy, such as, CH4 from POME ponds, may have potential to reduce more impacts on the environment. Introduction Indonesia is one of the world leaders in palm oil production with approximately 12.4 million tons of crude palm oil (CPO) production in 2005 and with the plantation area 5.6 million ha spreading out in 19 provinces [10]. The expansion of palm oil cultivation in Indonesia and its export oriented industry heavily relies on the strong world market demand for food. Currently, there are 320 CPO industries in Indonesia [10]. These include plantations and palm oil related factories. Among them, there are six biggest players in CPO business in Indonesia: PT. Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) consisting of 9 PTPN, Sinar Mas, Raja Garuda Mas, Astra Agro Lestari, Minamas Plantation and Indofood. They are managing more than 50% of plantation estate in Indonesia and are leading the Indonesian palm oil business.Palm oil industry is an industry to be considered when it comes to environmental impacts. Unfortunately, there is not so much available information related to the performance of each CPO on environmental impacts. There are reports which provide information on environmental impacts of CPO mills in South East Asian countries, but are limited to, for instance, Thailand’s cases [4 and 5] and Malaysia’s cases [1, 3, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12]. On the other hand, similar studies on the Indonesian’s case are not well established in academic literatures. And also there is limitation on Indonesian palm oil industrial information from plantation to consumption and disposal in academic articles. There is no literature related to material flow analysis focusing on the whole Indonesian palm oil related industry. One way to describe and present the environmental impacts is through a life cycle assessment (LCA). The LCA could be used to estimate the impacts of CPO production including the stages of plantation, transportation and milling [5, 8 and 11]. However, studies on Indonesian CPO production process were not well established in academic articles. The purpose of this paper is thus to clarify environmental impacts of palm oil industry in Indonesia especially by focusing on plantation and CPO mills with consideration to various bio-waste treatments."

"Research and development is currently underway to design an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system with the evaporator placed directly in the hot exhaust stream produced by a gas turbine (GT). ORCs can be used to generate electricity from heat that would otherwise be wasted, thus producing carbon-free energy. In conventional ORC configurations, an intermediate oil loop is used to separate the hot gas from the flammable working fluid. The goal of this research effort is to improve cycle efficiency and cost by eliminating the pumps, heat exchangers and all other added cost and complexity of the additional heat transfer loop by developing an evaporator that resides in the waste heat stream. Direct evaporation – although simpler and less expensive to implement than indirect evaporation of the working fluid – has historically been avoided due to a number of technical challenges imposed by the limitations of the working fluid. The high temperature of the hot exhaust gas may cause decomposition of the organic working fluid and safety is a major concern due to the high flammability of some of these working fluids. The research team has addressed these challenges and developed a new direct evaporator design that can reduce the ORC system cost by up to 15%, enabling the rapid adoption of ORCs for waste heat recovery. The ORC system is intended to integrate with the GT either as a retrofit or to be marketed as a single package, thus maintaining the manufacturer’s warranty.IntroductionWaste heat from turbines and engines used in industrial applications along with waste heat from industrial processes are exceptionally abundant sources of energy. If even a fraction of this waste heat could be economically converted to useful electricity, it would have a tangible and very positive impact on the economic health, energy consumption, and carbon emissions in the U.S. manufacturing sector. Land-based gas turbines are used in a broad range of applications to produce both shaft and electrical power. Most commonly known for generating electricity either as peaking units or as base load units, they are also used to directly drive pumps, compressors or other machinery requiring shaft power. Simple cycle gas turbines have the advantage of a short startup time relative to coal-fired and nuclear units, however, they incur a significant penalty on their efficiency. Large frame gas turbines usually are combined with bottoming steam-based Rankine cycles to increase the overall efficiency of the system and thereby improve their cost performance. Small-frame gas turbines with exhaust temperatures around 500°C could in principle benefit from steam bottoming cycles, but rarely use them in practice because of the high capital cost of the steam system. Particularly for base load small frame gas turbines, akin to those used in pipeline applications, an increase in efficiency is highly desirable."

Over 425 million used automotive oil filters are discarded in the United States each year. Estimates prior to this research claim that 10% are recycled with the remainder typically being landfillcd. Surveys conducted with ferrous scrap users and oil filter processors as part of this research reveal that at least 15% are currently being recycled as ferrous scrap. Oil filter scrap is not being used by many operations because of concerns with scrap consistency and quality. These concerns stem from trials conducted in the infancy of the oil filter recycling movement. Consistent scrap quality depends both on the content of the used oil filters and the processing technique used to produce the scrap. Technology has advanced since the first recycling trials were conducted by steelmakers. Several different types of scrap are available, including pucks, bricks, cubes, and shred. This research conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla investigated the content of used oil filters and compares the recyclability of different oil filter sizes and designs. Filters vary by application and vary between manufacturers for a particular application. An understanding of the scrap itself as well as the concerns and problems of both oil filter recyclers and oil filter processors is necessary to increase the number of used oil filters being recycled.

Modern metallurgical plants typically have complex flowsheets and operate on a continuous basis. Real time interactions within such processes can be complex and the impacts of streams such as recycles on process efficiency and stability can be highly unexpected prior to actual operation. Current desktop computing power, combined with state-of-the-art flowsheet simulation software like Metsim, allow for thorough analysis of designs to explore the interaction between operating rate, heat and mass balances and in particular the potential negative impact of recycles. Using plant information systems, it is possible to combine real plant data with simple steady state models, using dynamic data exchange links to allow for near real time de-bottlenecking of operations. Accurate analytical results can also be combined with detailed unit operations models to allow for feed-forward model-based-control. This paper will explore some examples of the application of Metsim to real world engineering and plant operational issues.

The results of "submerged arc" electric furnace processing of a variety of materials is discussed with respect to the process and products, including the characteristics of the products (e.g. TCLP or Toxicity Characteristics Leaching Procedure). The materials melted include slags and wastes containing various metal oxides including copper, tin, lead, zinc, chrome, nickel and other associated elements. The findings of these tests are compared to those reported in the literature for other operations treating similar "wastes".

Artech Recovery Systems, Inc has developed a low pressure and temperature? leach process called the "Cashman Process" to extract metals from arsenical flue dusts and residues and fix the arsenic in an environmentally stable form as ferric arsenate (scorodite). The process was pilot tested at Hazen Research in an integrated plant including continuous recycle from August 1989 to October 1989 during which several tons of flue dust were processed. Based on this pilot program, the process was deemed technically feasible and produced commercially salable products. Residues from this pilot program were subjected to a long-term stability test jointly designed by PTI environmental services and the USEPA. The process, its versatility, and the nature of the products is discussed in some detail.

A membrane based mixed extractant process was developed for selective removal of copper from waste acidic cupric chloride etchant solutions found in printed wire board manufacturing. The process uses a mixture of Adogen 381 (tri-isooctylamine), MOC®-45 (ketoxime) and MOC® 55TD (aldoxime) in a kerosene diluent. The mixed extractants recover the copper from a hydrochloric acid medium and transfers it to a sulfuric acid medium. The process also utilizes unique wetted membranes to separate the aqueous and organic phases. The driving force for these membranes is not pressure but the difference in surface tension between the two phases. By using these membranes, complete phase separation results. There is no physical entrainment contamination as found in conventional systems. The only cross contamination is the solubility concentration of one phase in the other. This however is less than 10 mg/l.

The paper describes the development of components in an lntegrated Furnace Control system for shielded-arc smelting focusing on operation and crucible integrity enhancement. The paper reviews the mechanisms of power, feed and energy input and losses into the shielded-arc smelting process and describes the furnace control system module development and integration to tailor the process. The ultimate success of a furnace control system application is transfer of knowledge, training, and operational support during furnace start-up and ramp-up phases and a model for how this has been achieved is discussed. The control modules of a shielded-arc laterite smelting furnace are described in detail including measured results and screen captures from application in a laterite smelting furnace. This paper focuses on developments in Integrated Furnace Controls tailored to shielded-arc laterite smelting but development of common furnace control modules for improved crucible and tapping operation integrity applied to other furnace processes, including immersed-arc smelting, is also covered. "The thinning resources of natural raw materials necessitate an increased degree of waste material recycling. The building industry offers a range of technologies enabling incorporation of industrial wastes into building materials for construction purposes in an economically acceptable way. Our research is focused on finding the appropriate technologies for specific groups of industrial waste materials (IWM). The studied IWM involve coal combustion residues (CCR), desulphurization products, sludges, metallurgical slags, and various other wastes. Many of them contain increased amounts of toxic elements that can under certain conditions get released. In order to prevent this, each specific IWM requires finding the technology that best ensures the binding of toxic elements in the building matter are fixed for the long term.Introduction The sustainable development of mankind is more than ever viewed as a matter of resources. Many aspects of the switch from a throw-away to a recycling society concern one of the largest consumers of natural resources and producer of greenhouse gases, the building industry. One of the biggest tasks lying before the researchers in the field of building materials is to find substitute or alternative raw materials that would save the thinning reserves of natural resources. The most promising and natural way is to replace the traditional raw materials with rejected and unwanted products of industrial processes, classified as wastes. These of course are not produced with the primary intention of achieving some desired properties. The usage of industrial wastes therefore involves finding the optimal way of usage their existing positive (from the point of view of utilizations) properties and minimizing the impact of their undesired properties, i.e. from the perspective of the considered application."

The application of submerged electric arc furnace smelting techniques to tin concentrates at the Capper Pass tin smelter in England is discussed. Some experimental data from earlier small scale 50 KVA electric smelting testwork on various low and medium grade tin concentrates is presented. Design considerations for the construction of a 3 MVA electric furnace to treat tin concentrates from the East Kemptville mine in Canada are considered, together with necessary precautions peculiar to the construction of a high grade smelter in close proximity to an existing low grade, complex non-ferrous metal smelting operation<. Slag composition modifications to optimise operational smelting conditions for various concentrates treated are discussed, together with refractory selection. The effect of concentrate impurity levels on the permissible degree of recycle to produce a satisfactory metal product is highlighted.

Current understanding of chemical equilibrium is based exclusively on the probabilistic considerations that are correct for isolated systems with only one chemical reaction to take place. For the systems with multiple chemical interactions, current paradigm of chemical thermodynamics promotes the idea of openness, artificially flavored with coefficients of thermodynamic activity. Recently introduced thermodynamics of chemical systems and the Method of Chemical Dynamics (MCD) offer explicit accounting for the multiple chemical interactions within the system. In the new theory, thermodynamic equilibrium of the j-subsystem obeys the logistic equation derived exclusively from the currently recognized concepts of thermodynamics. Having the only one new parameter -the subsystem&apos;s reduced chaotic temperature &apos;tj to describe external interactions, and reaction extent Ilj as independent variable, this equation covers the whole domain of the system&apos;s possible states from true thermodynamic equilibrium through the open equilibrium to bifurcations and chaos depending on the &apos;tj value. The MCD brings new opportunities to thermodynamic simulation of complex metallurgical and chemical systems, allowing for the analysis of their domains of states and the area limits, and for more accurate calculation of the equilibrium compositions. A hydrometallurgical procedure for the recovery of metal from ore, particularly of copper from sulphide materials is described. In the course of this procedure, the raw material is first of all submitted to the action of an appropriate reducing system and then treated with a ferric salt solution which brings about the selective solubilisation of the elements to be recovered with respect to those constituting the pyritic phase. This procedure is investigated using two ore samples proceeding from massive sulphide deposits, presenting different chemical and mine- ralogical characteristics. The results of this investigation are compared with those obtained by a classical process employing a ferric salt solution. It appears that one solubilisation of copper takes place under particularly advantageous conditions when our procedure is used. The principal parameters affecting leaching of zinc, lead and copper are examined. The selectivity of this treatment is evaluated by following the change during the treatment in the pyritic phase.

"In this paper, the room temperature friction and deformation properties of various polycrystalline diamonds; i.e. aggregates of diamond crystals with a ""binder"" phase of cobalt and a polycrystalline coating produced by a chemical vapour deposition processes (CVD) were studied when softer metallic and ceramic sliders were used. The experiments were conducted· at relatively low sliding speeds (10 mm/min), in a vacuum of 10-5 mbr after having cleaned the specimen surfaces by out-gassing them for about 30 min at 800 °C. As a result of increasing the number of traversals significant wear of the coated diamond by softer metallic sliders (aluminium and mild steel) was observed. With ceramic sliders, it is shown that the multiple traversals result in the formation of wear groove. With diamond silicon carbide, high friction and adhesion lead to significant metal transfer which then pre-empts cumulative deformation of the harder materials. With the diamond-cobalt composite, the friction is surprisingly low, there accumulation of wear debris on the tip of the slider but no permanent transfer of metal and the harder specimen is not damaged even after 5000 traversal.IntroductionPolycrystalline diamond is mainly produced as tool materials for the machining of hard metals and composites. Thus, the sliding friction and wear resistance are amongst the most important properties relevant to those applications.During cutting by PCD the wear mechanism is mostly influenced by the chemical affinity between the tool material and the workpiece. For example, diamond based materials are not recommended for machining ferrous materials because carbon is highly solubie in iron: This leads to the graphitisation of diamond particles and hence a high rate of diffusion wear is observed (Brookes and Lambert, 1982)."

"Spent potlining is unavoidable solid waste from aluminum smelters. About thirty kilograms spent potlining is discharged in China to produce per ton primary aluminum. Spent potlining has high level soluble fluorides and cyanides so that it brings heavy pollution to environment. It is prohibited to keep a large amount of spent potlining in open air because it will lead concentrated pollution to local soil and water source due to hydrated reactions between spent potlining and rain water/moisture in air. Landfill may solve pollution of spent potlining provisionally, but it is difficult to be accepted by aluminum smelters because of its high investment, troublesome monitoring and perennial maintenance. Detoxifying of spent potlining not only can remove deleterious fluorides and cyanides in SPL, but also can make fluorides in SPL recycle and return to aluminum electrolysis cells, at the same time benign SPL solid residue can be recycled and ready for cement production.IntroductionChina became the largest primary aluminum manufacturer in 2001. In the past few years, its aluminum output increased by twentyfive percent every year and reached 12.56 million metric tons in 2007. The whole world was very surprised and focused attention upon Chinese aluminum industry. It is more and more important to keep sustainable and steady development with the rapid development of Chinese economy. Aluminum industry is an important base industry and does a great contribution to Chinese economy. But aluminum industry is high energy-consumption and heavy-pollution industry. The government has paid more attention to aluminum industry in recent years. Nowadays the bothersome problem which counterworks Chinese aluminum industry is pollution from solid wastes. Main Solid wastes from aluminum industry are red mud from alumina refineries and spent potlining (short as SPL) from aluminum smelters. Spent potlining are waste lining materials from aluminum electrolysis cells. During production of aluminum, due to reactions between melted electrolyzer and pot lining as well as penetrating of fluorides into pot lining, newly-formed compounds inlayed in pot lining, destroyed the lining structure and brought pot lining cracking. Melt rushed out of lining cracks, cells have to be stopped running and ready for heavy repair. Cell life generally varies from 1500 to 2000 days. Spent potling is an unavoidable solid waste from aluminum industry."

Cominco Limited operates an integrated zinc-lead complex at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. Central to the successful operation of this complex is the treatment of zinc leach residues through the lead smelter. In 1997, Cominco started up a new lead smelter using KTVCET flash smelting, a state-of-the-art conventional slag fuming furnace, and a new drossing plant. The smelter has fully met the requirements for environmental performance, reduced energy consumption, and lowered labour costs. This paper provides a description of the new smelter and discusses the problems encountered during the start-up, as well as the solutions to those problems. Recent operating results are presented. The Texaco gasification system developed at the Monte Bello pilot plant efficiently bums petroleum-coke thereby producing syn-gas and electricity. This system produces more electricity than conventional burners, yet the only by-products are pharmaceutical grade sulfur and V -rich slag. Vanadium is known to exist in multiple valence states in compounds which possess a wide range of melting points and physical properties. Consequently, it becomes important to carefully regulate oxygen fugacity throughout the system in order to control vanadium valence state. Vanadium phase equilibria is presently poorly understood, in large part because of the multiple oxidation states of vanadium (-I, 0, +2, +3, +4, and +5) and the difficulty of unequivocally identifying the valence state(s) in many compounds. The operation of these gasifiers at approximately 1400°C is well above the melting point of V20S but considerably below the melting temperature of V02 and V 203. If J02 can be regulated to keep the burner within the V 205 field, slag material would more likely remain molten and more easily flow out of the bottom of the burner. In pure V oxides. the oxidation state is readily determined by microprobe analysis. where V20S (V+5) is 56% V, V02 (V+4) is 61.4% V, and V203 (V+3) is 68% V. However, V valence in multi-element phases (especially phases containing other elements of variable valence) cannot be resolved by microprobe analysis alone. Petroleum-coke gasification slags collected from within the gasifier under different oxidation conditions were studied by electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). X-ray diffraction (XRD). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. Raman spectrometry in conjunction with microprobe analysis was found to resolve the valence of vanadium in the phases of these slags. Raman spectra collected from homogeneous single phase V-oxide standards in vacuum at low temperatures (-150°C) yielded peaks characteristic to each valence state. Gasifier slag samples are, however, much more complicated. Oxidized samples contain: fine grained (Ca. Mg, Fe. V) oxide matrix of variable composition, (Fe. V, Ni) spinel. (Fe, AI, V, Ni, Mg) spinel, V205laths, AI-Si glass blebs and Ni sulfides. Reduced samples contain: crystalline Ca-siIicate matrix, subhedral to euhedral (V, Fe, Mg, AI) spinel, subhedral V02, Fe and Fe-Ni sulfides, Fe-Ni alloys, and complex Ca-oxide matrix. The different spinel assemblages, the characteristic V-oxides and the distinctly different character of the matrices makes the oxidized and reduced slags readily discernible.

"This work has for objective to identify the soil of the neighborhood Codin located in a lacking area of the urban nucleus of the district of Campos dos Goytacazes - RJ, after the identification the best line was determined for the production of soil-cement blocks. In this area it happens habitational deficit and precarious constructions are also verified. The use of soil cement blocks is considered a cheaper constructive method than the conventional (ceramic block or of concrete), because one of the components of the raw material is abundant (the soil) and the constructions can be erect with certain easiness for collective effort regime. Samples of soil of this area were collected for they be characterized with relationship to the physical and chemical characteristics, with I aid of GPS the community's location it was registered. Identified the soil type, the work began the study of lines they to make possible your use in an economical and safe way.
