LOCATION AND HISTORY The Lakeshore Copper property is located on the Papago Indian Reservation approximately 30 miles South of Casa Grande, Arizona. This major porphyry type deposit was discovered by El Paso Natural Gas Company in 1966. Following an extensive diamond drilling program, El Paso invited several mining companies, including Hecla, to examine the property with a view towards participation. Hecla's examination, and the attendant feasibility studies, led to agreements, which were finalized in September 1969, whereby Hecla would acquire a 50% interest in the property, and would act as operator. The Lakeshore deposit covers an area approximately 3,000 feet in width by 6,000 feet in length. It consists of an upper zone of disseminated copper oxides, averaging approximately 100' in thickness overlying a zone of disseminated copper sulfides up to 1,000 feet thick. Near the base of the disseminated ore is a blanket like zone of high grade copper sulfides, referred to as the tactite ore body. The mine is being developed to produce approximately 6,500 tons per day of oxide ore and 9,000 tons per day of sulfide ore. This represents a total daily production rate of 15,500 tons per day, which will be achieved by underground mining methods using rubbertired dieselpowered mining equipment. DEVELOPMENT LAYOUT The mine is being developed by two parallel 15° decline tunnels. The declines were collared 5,000 feet southeast of the ore body, and are being driven in a northwestery direction, to pass beneath the tactite ore zone. This paper presents the authors? personal experiences in the design and operation of moly separation circuits in copper-moly concentrators. Topics discussed include column cells versus mechanical cells; use of nitrogen; use of CO2 and sulfuric acid for pH modification; and general equipment selection and sizing. A benchmarking of main operating parameters for industrial plants is presented. Upgrading curves for commercial column and mechanical cleaning circuits are also presented, showing that with average flotation kinetics and rougher concentrate grades, technical grade concentrates can be easily achieved with five column cells operating in counter-current configuration.

INTRODUCTION With only about 30% of Japan's entire population served by sewer systems at the end of 1980, extensive sewerage construction programs have been implemented. As major sewer networks in large cities are near completion, construction of smaller sewer networks in less populated areas and branch sewers in urban areas is on the rise, where a demand for sewer tunnels of 600mm to 1500mm diameter is very heavy. The pipe jacking technique, usually employed to excavate such small diameter tunnels, therefore has become the subject of further technological development and sophistication to cope with the increasing volume of construction. At the 1979 RETC, the state of the art on the slurry shield tunneling method at that time was reported. This paper is a follow up to the last paper and discusses a newly developed boulder crushing equipment and automatic pipe jacking system for the slurry shield method and their application. Such technological advancement as high-degree mechanization and automation will significantly improve tunneling operations in response to the aging society to come. Through application of the technique on so called factory automation, this is a step towards field automation for the construction industry.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a rule in 2014 that required numerous changes in compliance dust sampling requirements for coal mine operators. Two key parts of this rule were the lowering of the respirable coal mine dust standard from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 and requiring operators of underground coal mines to use a continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) for compliance sampling. The CPDM currently approved for compliance sampling is equipped with a display that provides miners with in-shift information on their respirable dust exposure. The goal was to provide an indication of a potential overexposure and empower the miner and mine operator to implement changes in controls and/or operating practices to prevent an overexposure from occurring.

During the last 28 years, I have had the very challenging and rewarding experience of working as an engineering professional in a large multinational company, both as a manager of engineers and engineering projects as well as an inventor and generator of new engineering processes and products. Due to the diversified geographic and tech¬nical nature of my employer's business, my responsibilities have taken me all over the world. This has included interactions with people in different industries including minerals, coal, chemicals, petroleum, pulp and paper, agriculture and pharmaceuticals. As diverse as my experience may seem, it has always amazed me how common the basic underlying technology and economic trends are that shape the working environment that any given engineer in any given geographic loca¬tion will experience. I would like to discuss the industrial evolution from micro to macro engineering. One of the basic truths behind how industry must and will operate is "change," including: • the creation of conditions for change, • the anticipation of change, • the resistance to change, • the rewards that being part of a change can bring and • the destruction that change can bring to the unprepared. This fact was well stated by Heractitus around 500 BC.: "There is nothing permanent except change." This simple truth has been valid since the dawn of time and, if anything, is accelerating in nature every decade.

This review paper describes recent advances that have been made at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) in Brisbane in developing a framework for simulating the flotation process. The work has been carried out collaboratively with the Mineral Processing Research Unit of the University of Cape Town in South Africa (UCT), as part of the Australian Minerals Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 Project. The framework consists of four components, namely – the mathematical model of the flotation process, suitable measurement tools for characterising the flotation cell, a computer program for modelling and simulating the process and the plantas for testing and validating the flotation models. A brief description of the model is first presented, then a number of applications of the model are described. The paper shows how the model can be used to optimise the performance of flotation cells, and then two case studies on the modelling methodologies are described. Finally the current and future plans of the project are outlined.

Recent advances in digital cameras and image processing allow photographers to produce excellent high-resolution action shots in low light and high contrast conditions commonly encountered underground. Digital photography is often used for construction and inspection documentation for underground structures. Designers, owners, and contractors benefit from quality photographs that document incremental progress and project milestones. Documentation photos serve as a lasting record of as-built conditions, are an important marketing tool, and help the owner build public support for expensive public works projects. When the project is complete, the only mementos that the participants will hold onto are the photographs.

Rich Hill, also known as Weaver District No. 2, is among the most productive placer gold locations in Arizona. Located near Congress, AZ (Fig. 1), this district hosted major placer rushes in the 1860s and1930s. Those rushes were followed by an electronic metal detecting rush that started in the 1980s and continues today. Thousands of ounces of gold have been produced by these modern amateur and professional metal detectorists. Many of them see more gold in an afternoon than Nevada mine workers will ever see outside of the mill. Rich Hill discovery Inspired northeastward by Spanish legends, a party of 10 men left Yuma, AZ on April 1, 1863. Included in the group were Pauline Weaver (Fig. 2), Henry Wickenburg and Abraham Peeples. Wickenburg left the group near the Hassayampa River and discovered the Vulture deposit. The rest of the group arrived at the base of Rich Hill in late May. While drying antelope meat on the first day, a few of the men prospected a nearby creek bed and immediately found gold. In a couple of hours they picked up more than 2.8 kg (90 oz) of gold. The next day, four members of the party went searching for their horses and returned with news that a nearby hilltop was literally graveled with nuggets.

Dust control in longwall coal mining depends primarily on the prevention of dust at the source and secondarily on the suppression of airborne dust. One of the primary methods for the prevention of dust is the wetting of the coal face prior to extraction, which can be achieved with water spray systems installed on the shield supports. The spray droplets must travel across the airway to the longwall face, where high ventilation air speeds can entrain water droplets and prevent them from reaching the face thus minimizing the dust control at the source. Through an evaluation of spray plume characteristics in a wind tunnel, the droplet size and droplet drift behavior was determined. This drift behavior was examined by evaluating the spray plume concentration drop and the droplet size shift near the nozzle exit at varying air speeds. Based on these evaluations, CFD modeling was applied to simulate the spray behavior for varying geometries. These results led to the selection of appropriate spray nozzles capable of carrying water droplets to the face at higher air speeds, resulting in an adequate wetting of the coal face and reduced dust generation.

Southern Copper Corporation (SCC) is one of the world’s largest copper companies and is finishing the modernization of the Ilo copper smelter. A single ISASMELTTM furnace will start smelting 1,200,000 tons per year of concentrate at the end of 2006. Three existing Peirce Smith converters are being upgraded plus a new one for converting the matte to blister copper is being installed. Two new anode furnaces and a twin anode casting wheel have being operating since January 2006. This represents one of the main changes in the process because the final product of the smelter is now anode copper instead of blister copper. A new oxygen plant, acid plant, and others facilities are in the ramp-up stage. This environmental project will ensure that the new smelter will comply with the environmental regulations of Peru by the end of January 2007. This paper summarizes the background to the modernization project, describes the different stages of the project including engineering, procurement and construction, describes the main areas of the new copper smelter and also the pre-operational testing, commissioning and start-up of them. This is a brown field project with a target of reducing as much as possible the production losses of the existing operation. This paper presents the details of the development of the Ilo Smelter Modernization Project and explains the main aspects of the new facilities, the products to be obtained and the associated facilities for their commercialization, including a Marine Trestle for bulk acid exportation.

It is difficult to remove cadmium from raw indium using only electrolytic refining because their standard potentials are similar. In this paper, physical and chemical methods were used to remove Cd from raw indium. Indium metal is vacuum refined for two hours at 400°C with a vacuum pressure of 20 Pa. In this process, 99.70% of the Cd can be removed. The removal rate of Cd reaches 90% to 95% when indium is further smelted for 10 minutes in a 20% glycerin solution of KI and I2 at 180°C. When pre-indium is electrolytic refined in an In2(SO4)3-H2SO4 system, in which the indium content is 80 to 100 g/L, the pH is 2.0-3.0 and the current density is 80 to 100 A/m2, the contents of the impurities decrease and the purity of the indium product reaches 99.99%.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Sept. 22, 2012 when the 2012 class is inducted during a special ceremony in Las Vegas, NV in conjunction with MINExpo 2012. The NMHF&M will induct four men representing the equipment manufacturing, minerals exploration, copper and coal sectors of the mining industry. The diverse cross-section of mining industry giants joining the hall of fame include Glen A. Barton, J. David Lowell, Samuel Newhouse and John Cleveland Osgood. They will join 214 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 25th Silver Anniversary Induction Banquet & Ceremony. These men were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors within their own sectors and across the industry at large.

Paper 1: Risk of gastrointestinal cancers from inhalation and ingestion of asbestos, John F. Gamble Selikoff suggested the hypothesis that asbestos exposure is causally associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers in an early study of insulation workers. In this paper, John Gamble reports on his extensive review and reanalysis studies that address the relationship between asbestos exposure and GI cancers. The purpose of the review was to evaluate the association between asbestos exposure and risks of stomach, colorectal, colon, and rectal cancers separately. Gamble evaluated exposure?response (E?R) relationships using surrogate exposure methods ??because few individual studies of GI cancer have reported exposure? response analyses.?? The principal asbestos exposure surrogates are: (1) the rate ratio (RR) for lung cancer; and (2) the percent of mesothelioma among exposed workers. Analyzing SMRs for GI cancers from individual studies versus the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma provides crude estimates of E?Rs for asbestos exposure and GI cancer. Tround International Inc. is developing rock excavation and drilling devices which utilize a simple patented mechanism for firing frangible projectiles. This system launches a salvo of three projectiles with every shot in automatic sequence. Studies conducted by Physics International Inc. have demonstrated that firing projectiles into hard rock such as granite creates fragmentation which is much faster and cheaper than conventional drilling and blasting. The Tround salvo approach enhances this further by a controlled stresswave interaction created by a slight time difference during impact of the individual projectiles. The University of Maryland is conducting additional studies to optimize these parameters.

Mejel valley zircon ore in Iran is located in north part of Iran and was sampled to evaluate its concentration. The aim of this project was to define the mineralogy of this zone and separating zircon from other minerals using gravity concentrators and magnetic separators. It is constituted of various valuable minerals, mainly zirconium, niobium-tantalum, titanium, rare earth elements particularly cerium-bearing minerals namely zircon, sphene and rare earth elements oxides. We used statistical method for designing of experiments. Yates method used for analysis of basic experiments results. The grade of zircon in primary sample was 1.1%. Different experiments were designed to optimize all required parameters. The final concentration with 75% zircon was produced and final recovery was 79%. Finally, lab-scale based flow sheet was prepared using experiments results.

Development of the New York City Water Supply System The New York City water supply system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in neighboring counties. Peak day demands on the system are currently running at about 70 m3/sec (about 1,600 mgd), which is significantly lower than in the 1990s. This trend of reducing demands over the past 25 years, which has been experienced in other major urban centers in the US, is mainly the result of conservation measures and increased cost consciousness on the part of water users. In the long term, demands are expected to once again follow an increasing trend with population growth, so that by the end of the planning horizon of these studies, the year2045, the peak day demand is expected to increase to about 85 m3/sec (2,000 mgd).The system is served largely by surface water sources, regulated by a system of 19reservoirs and three controlled lakes, which are connected to the City by a series of aqueducts, the longest of which is about 87 km (54 miles). The total storage in the sys-tem amounts to about 560 billion gallons, providing a system firm yield of about1300 mgd. The Delaware system provides about 50% of the City’s water, the Catskill about 40%, with the remaining 10% provided by the Croton. The system as a whole, which is shown on Figure 1, has been built up over the past 150 years, and is truly a marvel of engineering. The Catskill and Delaware aqueducts both discharge into Kensico Reservoir, which is a daily balancing reservoir located in Westchester County about 24 km(15 miles) north of the New York City line. The two aqueducts extend south for a further 14 miles to combine again at Hillview Reservoir in the Bronx, which provides hourly balancing storage for New York City system. The Croton aqueduct runs nearby as shown on Figure 2, but does not connect into the two reservoirs. From Hillview Reservoir the water is supplied to the city via three main distribution tunnels, known as City Tunnels 1, 2, and 3. City Tunnel No.1 was developed in the 1920s as part of the Catskill system. City Tunnel No. 2 followed in the 1960s as part of the Delaware system. City Tunnel No. 3 (CT3) is partly under construction and partly in operation, and is being implemented to permit the other distribution tunnels to be taken out of operation for the first time for inspection and maintenance. A test system was developed for measuring airflow in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ventilation gallery using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer. The gallery was used to simulate face airflow conditions in underground mines having a blowing curtain. Airflow data collected at multiple sampling locations between the face and the end of the curtain were used to draw airflow profiles for different curtain setback distances, intake flow quantities and entry widths. In addition, methane was released at the face, measured at the sampling locations, and displayed as methane distribution in the area between the curtain and the face. Entry geometry had a significant effect on airflow patterns, and the flow patterns affected the distribution of methane in the entry. Flow measured at and parallel to the face was a good predictor of methane dilution and removal within two feet of the face.

In 2005, CANMET-MMSL used its pool of expertise in ground control, open pit and underground mine engineering, mineral processing, information technology and applied mineralogy to launch a mine-to-mill research project. The objective of the project was to optimize the distribution of rock breakage energy among blasting, crushing and grinding activities, thereby maximizing the efficiency of energy utilization within comminution processes. Tests were designed to demonstrate that this approach could reduce the energy consumption, thus contributing to the reduction of Green House Gas (GHG) production in the Canadian mining industry. The project was accomplished in collaboration with DynoConsult and Dyno Nobel Canada Inc., a world leader in commercial explosives. Data analysis from 12 blasts (six with electronic and six with pyrotechnic detonators) in three different geological formations of a quarry (soft, medium and hard rock) shows that electronic blasting technology increases rock fragmentation by 15% (in hard rock) to 20% (in soft rock). A more uniform rock fragment size distribution is also obtained. The impact of the improved quality blast product on downstream processes of the quarry is a productivity increase of 5% in rock excavation and transportation, an energy reduction of 10% at the primary crusher and an increase of 15% of the primary crusher throughput. A soft-sensor prototype, based on primary crusher data (i.e. energy consumption, throughput, feed and product size distribution) and a simplified computerized process model, was developed for on-line measurement of the rock operating work index. Additionally, 385 rock samples and specimens were collected and prepared to determine the tensile and compressive strength of the rock material, to evaluate the aggregate crushing work index, and to examine the development of micro- and macro-fractures by means of binocular and SEM microscopy. Blast-induced rock damage was evaluated at the end of the laboratory testing program. Even though a reduction of rock hardness of around 30% was observed after blasting, the impact of the blasting method (i.e. use of electronic or pyrotechnic detonators) on the induced rock damage could not be observed. It is either absent or not perceptible with the accuracy of the measuring techniques and the number of samples analyzed.

Although water quality predictions are often made in Environmental Impact Statements (EIS's) as part of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), comparisons between predicted and actual water quality conditions are rarely reviewed. A comprehensive review of predicted and actual water quality conditions was conducted for a number of large U.S. hardrock mines with EIS’s. For mines with large differences between predicted and actual conditions, factors responsible for the deviations, such as characterization and modeling errors or engineering failures, were identified. Recommendations are made for how the NEPA process could be modified to better predict water quality at hardrock mine sites.

"Three major challenges for the mining industry are the minimization of energy use, water consumption and environmental impact. Therefore, any technique that reduces milling waste, decreases water usage and shrinks impact during mine life must be considered a major innovation in mining.To these ends, one of the most impactful developments in mining within the last 10 years has been the expanded use of high technology sensors to create preconcentrations of mine ore (Jönsson, 2014). The most common sensors used are charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras, that allow through a red, green and blue (RGB) coloring system, the separation of minerals with different colors, tones and, in many cases, with differences in brightness.More recently, the development and use of dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) to enable the separation by atomic density of the constituent minerals within a given rock has become a reality. Within this work, a rapid bibliographical review of the CCD and DE-XRT methods and examples of their usage within mining and the industrial minerals sector are presented.Sensor-based sorting in miningAutomation within mining is one of the industry’s current goals. Sensors of various kinds have been used as steps toward automation in recent years, from improving the safety and productivity of haul trucks through the use of cameras and global positioning satellites (GPS), to the divination of slope failures. Just as with other mining areas, sorting has improved dramatically and made great steps toward automation in recent years (Wotruba et al., 2014).Sensor-based sorting (SBS) uses spectromatic sensors to identify intrinsic characteristics of particles and separates them by either mechanical or pneumatic means into different product streams (Wotruba et al., 2014). SBS can be used with great effectiveness to improve gravimetric beneficiation through the selective separation or preconcentration of run of mine ores (ROM)."
