Although not generally recognized, Arizona has rock salt deposits unique in the United States. This uniqueness stems from a combination of two factors: (1) relatively youthful geologic age and (2) nonmarine origin. Although Arizona shares one deposit with Nevada (Figure 1, No. I) there are three others within the State (Nos. 2, 4, 5) that are believed to be both late Cenozoic in age (less than 15 million years) and nonmarine in origin. The only other recognized nonmarine salt deposits in the U.S. are much older, being in the early Cenozoic (Eocene) Green River Formation of Colorado and Wyoming. According to Johnson and Gonzales (1), the remaining rock salt deposits in the United States are marine and either Paleozoic or Mesozoic in age. Of the seven localities shown in Figure 1, six in the Basin and Range geologic province are believed to represent nomarine late Cenozoic phenomena and one (No. 7) in the Colorado Plateau geologic province is Paleozoic (Permian) in age and marine in origin. The following comments are intended to update the general geologic highlights of these deposits and to summarize the nature of their present utilization.

Introduction Trapper mine is a dip-line strip coal mine, located about 10 km (6 miles) southwest of Craig, CO. The mine provides the Craig Generating Station, operated by Colorado-Ute, with about 2 Mt (2.3 million st) of coal annually. The Trapper mine is situated on a hillside that climbs in elevation from 2 to 2.5 km (6500 to 7400 ft) at average grade of 15%. The coal seams dip at about 16% down-grade and they outcrop near the top of the hillside. They exceed maximum stripping depth in 1 to 1.7 km (3500 to 5500 ft) of pit length. Stripping in the three existing pits is performed with three Page 752 23 m3 (30 cu yd) walking draglines. Two of the pits are currently being cast blasted. Until the active cut, the Derringer pit was cast blasted only where the lower mined seam exceeded stripping capabilities and the pit was a single seam operation. Now, a 9-m (30-ft) interburden bench has been incorporated into the stripping plan. This bench protects the first seam of coal from shear when the overburden is cast blasted. The cast blasted section of the 1.6 km (53,000 ft) long pit has been increased from the 457 m (1500 ft) casted previ¬ously to 1 km (3500 ft). High speed films show the coal losses due to shear of the blast are minimal. The pit width in Derringer pit is 61 m (200 ft). This is necessary for efficient spoil side stripping of a relatively thin interburden in the two-seam section of the pit. The Enfield pit is entirely cast blasted. The single seam pit is 46 m (150 ft) wide, 1.1 km (3600 ft) long, and varies from 15 and 46 m (50 and 150 ft) in overburden depth. The steel industry's increased demand for higher grade pellets has caused the pellet producers to investigate methods of upgrading their product. The Hanna Mining Company's Groveland plant is no exception. The Groveland Mine is located in Dickinson County on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The low grade iron deposit is a complex mixture of magnetite and hematite with chert, quartz, jasper, and various iron silicates. (1) Beneficiation is by Humphrey spirals and anionic flotation of the iron minerals. (2) A general flowsheet is shown in Figure 1. Flotation of the spiral tailings makes up about 75% of the concentrate. A minor amount of concentrate, less than 3%, is produced in magnetic circuits. The concentrate is pelletized at the rate of 1.6 million tons per year.

This paper discusses the type of scaling operations presently in use in underground mines. It defines a scaling factor that is expressed as the area necessary to scale to extract 1 t (1.1 st) of ore. The problems associated with conventional scaling methods are discussed as well as recent developments in mechanized hand-held scaling de- vices and methods of loose detection. The elements of the scaling process are further analyzed. The conception and design of a mechanized scaling device, developed at Universite' Laval is also described. The results of field tests conducted in Quebec hard rock mines are presented. The experimental findings show that the mechanized hand-held scaling device shows potential in improving the productivity and safety of underground mining operations.

INTRODUCTION The shield-driven method in Japan has been adopted widely in soft ground tunneling, namely, subway, water supply, sewer and utility tunnels, and recently this is an indispensable method in urban area. Since this method was started to adopt on a full scale from the beginning of 1960, construction achievements in length were about 830 km for 15 years until 1974 (1). According to the recent informations of the Japan Tunneling Association, the achievement in length under construction as of December, 1977, was about 350 km (2) and the extention of increase in shield-driven method can be guessed (Tab. 1). The 2014 George A. Fox Conference at the Graduate Center, City University of New York in New York City was presented under the theme, ?21st Century Challenges for the Tunneling Industry. Bruce Grewcock, chief executive officer and president of Peter Kiewit Sons? Inc., opened the conference with a keynote address in which he set the tone for the rest of the day by touching on the many challenges the industry is facing, which are plentiful and complex. Covering the breadth of the industry, he spoke about everything from the technical challenges that come from working beneath the streets of some of the most densely populated regions in the world to the challenges that come from working with the people who live in those areas. ?My observation is that we, as an industry, are being asked to put structures in places where they are needed, but are complex environments to work in,? said Grewcock. ?We work in an industry that relies on some of the most technically challenging engineering in the world, and when we are done with a project, we cover it up and no one ever sees it.? Despite these issues, Grewcock said that, in his opinion, the biggest challenge the industry is facing is that of people; more precisely, where to find the next batch of people. Looking out at the conference-record crowd of more than 400 registered attendees, Grewcock quipped that he saw plenty of gray beards and asked aloud, ?Where will we find, educate and train the people to tackle the issues that this industry will face in the future??

PT Kaltim Prima Coal's 13.1 km overland conveyor was commissioned in 1991. It is of conventional 3 roller 350 troughed belt type. Cost and performance optimisation during initial design ended up with 5.4m/s belt speed, 1,000mm belt width to convey 1,350tph, and 7mtpa of coal. Despite high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 mps in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput increase. In 2002, new low loss ST2100 1,100mm wide belt replaced the old ST2250 due for change-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to 8.5 mps, hence to increase the OLC capacity to 30mtpa. Performance data, experience of site personnel, site observation and tests, benchmarking, and information from equipment manufacturers were major inputs to the design review. The project fast track was another challenge in addition to executing modifications on a production lifeline. The project was completed within fifteen months and the OLC was successfully commissioned at 8.5 mps belt speed in February 2005. The OLC has been to date conveying 4200tph satisfactorily.

The McDonald gold deposit is located in the upper Blackfoot Valley in Lewis and Clark County in west-central Montana, about 65 km (40 miles) northwest of Helena and 13 km (8 miles) east of Lincoln (Fig. 1). The McDonald project area covers about 20.7 km2 (8 sq miles) of elevated terrain on the north side of the Blackfoot Valley. The Blackfoot River lies 1 km (0.6 miles) south of the McDonald deposit. East Butte and West Butte rise 300 m (985 ft) above the Blackfoot Valley to an elevation of 1,750 m (5,740 ft). They conveniently divide the area into two parts. The Seven-Up Pete Joint Venture (SPJV) is a partnership between Phelps Dodge Mining (72.25%) and CR Montana, a subsidiary of Canyon Resources (27.75%). SPJV controls about 83 km2 (32 sq miles) of mineral and surface rights in the Lincoln area. The McDonald project is on state-owned and private land. The joint venture has conducted exploration since 1989 at the Seven-Up Pete, McDonald and Keep Cool areas (Fig. 1).

The Nuggety Gully prospect is located 170 km (106 miles) south- east of Port Hedland and 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Marble Bar in the Pilbara Region, Western Australia. The area is held under title by Esso Exploration and Production Australia, Inc. The prospect covers a significant, but currently uneconomic body of molybdenum and copper mineralization of porphyry style, associated with Archean high level acid intrusives intruding sediments and volcanics of a narrow east-west Archean greenstone belt. The Nuggety Gully intrusive rocks have been dated at 3.2 b.y. ± 117 (de Later, oral communication). The current resource estimate for the deposit is 102 Mt (1 12 million st) of 0.1 1 % Mo and 0.15% Cu.

Leaching studies of low-grade manganese ore containing 31.77% Mn and 23.71 % Fe from Nishikhal, India, were carried out using pyritiferous lignite as a reductant in sulfuric acid medium. The variables studied were quantity of lignite, sulfuric acid concentration and temperature. Regression equations for the extraction of manganese and potassium were determined from 23 full factorial design data. The experimental conditions for the extraction of manganese were optimized using the steepest-ascent method. It was found that 99.03% of the manganese could be extracted in three hours with an ore to lignite ratio of 1:1.8, a sulfuric acid concentration of 1.9 M and a temperature of 99°C. INTRODUCTION How accurate are past and present employee radondaughter exposure records of underground uranium miners employed in the United States? This often-debated question is essential for future substantiation of safe exposure limits. An apparent discrepancy between company-reported exposures and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) projected exposures was detected in 1977. For these reasons a need for an updated comparison of these exposure data was indicated. This paper gives some of the conclusions of the earlier study and compares more recent exposure records compiled by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc., with projected exposures based on sampling by Federal mine inspectors. EARLIER STUDY In its 1977 Annual Report (U.S. Department of the Interior, 1978), MSHA's predecessor, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), reported that there was "an apparent discrepancy between Federal inspection results and company records." Both company records and MESA's projections from samples taken during routine Federal inspections indicated reductions in the average exposure of underground uranium miners from 1975 to 1977, but the MESA projections were over 4 times higher than the company-reported averages. This apparent discrepancy however, was based on a comparison of exposure data reported for all U.S. underground uranium miners. This projection more closely represented the average exposure of U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked 1,500 hours or more during the year. Exposures of such workers are reported each year by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc. (AIF) in summaries of exposure data reported to the AIF by uranium mining companies throughout the United States. (The AIF exposure summary for 1979 appears as tables A-1 and A-2 in the appendix of this paper.) Assuming that the average exposure for each exposure range category is the midpoint of each exposure range category, table 1 compares the estimated average exposures for U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked underground 1,500 hours or more each year in 1975 through 1977 with the exposures projected by MESA for those years. Reported- Projected Year (WLM) (WLM) 1975 1.59 5.68 1976 1.84 4.64 1977 1.68 4.08 1 Atomic Industrial Forum, 1976, 1977, 1978. 2 U.S. Dept. of the Interior, 1978.] Table 1 indicates that, even after adjustment to ensure better comparability an apparent discrepancy between Federal inspection results and company reported exposures for 1975-1977 exists; however, the apparent discrepancy diminished over the 3 years. Slade, 1977, explained some of the discrepancy between company records and MESA projections of miners' average radon-daughter exposures as follows: 1) Concentrations of radon daughters in some work areas can vary greatly during any one day. A variation from 0.3 WL to 17.0 WL has been measured in the same stope on the same day. 2) Seemingly simple abatement problems indicated by the regular Federal and State inspections were solved simply by manipulating the mine ventilation. 3) The methods used by mine operators to compute cumulative exposures were such that high radiation readings were seldom or never reflected in the records. For example, a work area sampled on Monday indicated a radon-daughter level equal to 0.2 WL and this was recorded. It was sampled again on Wednesday of the following week and the level was 2.2 WL. The miners were withdrawn or told to fix the ventilation, and when this was accomplished the area was sampled and found to be at 0.2 WL again. Although the miners could have been working in the higher concentration up to 6 days, this reading might never be reflected in their records. If it was recorded, only a fraction of the day on which it was discovered would be entered into the cumulative exposure calculation (time-weighted average). 4) Some of the mines visited used a mine average radiation concentration, and every employee working underground was given the same exposure per unit of time spent underground. As a result of the 1977 study, more stringent sampling and recordkeeping standards were proposed and public hearings held in 1977. The resulting new and revised health standards on radon-daughter sampling and exposure recordkeeping became effective August 30, 1979 (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 1979). Prior to these new regulations, radondaughter sampling requirements were on an "as often as necessary" basis (Code of Federal Regulations, 1978). The new regulations required practically all active work areas in underground mines to be sampled at least once every 2 weeks, with many areas requiring weekly sampling. Demand for nonfuel minerals depends in large measure on economic activity, which rose in each quarter of 1985. However, despite 1.7 million new housing starts and a 7% increase in motor vehicle production, many domestic metal mining operations experienced continued difficulties as a result of import competition, greater use of newer engineered materials, emphasis on multi-unit housing, and downsizing of motor vehicles. Recognizing the continued difficulties of the domestic metal mining industry, many corporations made major efforts to retrench and rationalize - selling, closing, or spinning off less profitable operations, renegotiating labor contracts, and inviting increased participation by foreign firms. About 15% of US energy was imported in 1985. This included $52 billion worth of crude oil and refined products, adding significantly to the overall merchandise trade deficit of $149 billion. With the exception of a few large-bulk, low-value raw materials, most minerals move relatively freely in world trade. The strong dollar encouraged imports and made exporting more difficult US nonfuel minerals trade deficit totalled $17 billion. The US continued to rely on imports for many important strategic minerals in 1985 (see accompanying Table). Increased pressures for protection included major mineral products such as steel, ferroalloys, and copper. But President Reagan, in his Feb. 1986 "Economic Report to the Congress" stated: "Our international trade policy rests firmly on the foundation of free and open markets." He also stressed the need for fair trade and more open markets internationally. The National Critical Materials Council, created by law in the latter part of 1984, was activated in the latter part of 1985. Its first public hearing was held in January 1986. The Council is to review the nation's materials posture and advise the President on such matters. Compared with 1984, the value of US raw nonfuel mineral output rose 2%, to $24 billion. This supported the production of $244 billion worth of processed materials of mineral origin. Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production - fell 4% to 81 Mt (89 million st). Consequently, domestic iron ore production fell to 49 Mt (55 million st), about 97% pelletized. Iron ore imports fell 7% to 16 Mt (18 million st). Raw steelmaking capacity fell 4% to 117 Mt (129 million st). Pacts with 16 leading steel exporting nations have been negotiated in an effort to reduce import penetration of the domestic market. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about 40% capacity. The US mined no manganese or chromium. Only a small quantity of ferronickel was produced from domestic laterite mining in Oregon. Molybdenum production increased slightly to 49 kt (54,000 st). Mine shipments of tungsten, another mineral tied to steel production, also fell slightly to 1.1 kt (1200 st) of contained metal. Even the domestic aluminum smelting industry suffered reverses as high stocks and low prices reduced production 16% to 3.5 Mt (3.8 million st). Similarly, imports of bauxite fell 7% and alumina 10%. Production of magnesium metal fell 6% to 136 kt (150,000 st), while titanium metal production remained unchanged at 22 kt (24,000 st). Copper mine production was unchanged at 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st). Copper refinery production fell slightly to 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st). Lead mine production rose 24% to 400 kt (440,000 st). Zinc mine output was down 10%, to 225 kt (250,000 st). Refined lead production increased 28%, to 510 kt (560,000 st). Primary slab zinc production fell 5% to 240 kt (260,000 st).

It is calculated that since the beginning of last century, which practically coincides with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, our civilization has consumed around 239.5 million tons of copper (see: Table 1). According to the most pessimistic projections of today, with only a 2.5% annual growth rate in demand, we are bound until the end of this century to consume another 200 million tons of copper in remaining 17 years. A recent study made by US Bureau of Mines (1) indicates that the proven ore reserves of 150 major operating mines and about 120 deposits sufficiently explored for development and feasibility studies accumulate a total mass of 49.3 billion tons of ore, assaying an average of 0.82% Cu and containing around 324 million tons of recoverable copper. Consequently, there is a high grade of probability that the bulk of our future ore supplies, for our demand of, say, next 25 years will cane precisely from these mines. The interesting point in USBM study is that it indicates the recoverable byproduct content of these ores and which is: 118.2 million troy ounces of gold 2277.4 million troy ounces of silver 7.1 million tons of lead 24.7 million tons of zinc 1.3 million tons of nickel 3.1 million tons of molybdenum 765 thousand tons of cobalt, and 720 thousand troy ounces of platinum. This information gives us a relatively reliable profile of our future ores for next 25 years, and thus makes possible evaluation of byproduct credits in our future copper mining and producing activities.

I was very glad to see an article on alkali-silica reactivity of concrete aggregate in Mining Engineering. It is a topic that should be reexamined every 45 or 50 years. The last paper (that I am aware of) that examined this topic in Mining Engineering was Rexford (1950), who, at the time, was chief of the Petrography Section, South Pacific Division Laboratory, Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles, CA. The paper was presented at the AIME meeting in Los Angeles in October 1948. Professor Leming's discussion generally reflects the current state-of-the-art; but it provides no references for more detailed information. I wrote a paper titled "How to avoid excessive expansion of concrete due to alkali-aggregate reaction," which was included in the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reactions in Hydroelectric Plants and Dams (Mather, 1995). In it, I emphasized that it was the hydroxide ion (not the alkali ion) that caused the pore fluid in the concrete to dissolve reactive silica, producing alkali-silica gel capable of taking up water, thereby, causing swelling and rupturing of the concrete. Excessive expansion will not occur unless there is a sufficient amount of potentially expansive alkali-silica reaction product and water. However, this will not occur unless there is a sufficient quantity of reactive aggregate and unless there is a mechanism by which the pH of the pore fluid can get well above the normal value of about 12.6. In many cases it is sufficient that the cementitious medium not only contains portland cement but also contains ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) or a pozzolan such as fly ash, silica fume, metakaolin, volcanic glass or calcined shale - any of which may have been included for economic reasons. If, however, the person selecting the ingredients for concrete knows that the aggregate is reactive (with no alternate nonreactive aggregate available) and if the person knows that the only available portland cement has a high alkali content (i.e., more than 0.6% Na2O.; Na2e = % Na20 + 0.658 x % K20), then it becomes irresponsible not to establish what reasonable precaution one should take. Professor Leming suggests using one of the following: 30% Class F fly ash, 50% GGBFS or 7% to 10% silica fume. My view is that one should prepare test specimens with the cement and aggregate to be used and then expose these both with and without at least two dosages of each of the various alternative materials (slag, pozzolan and lithium salts), so that the required dosage. to control the expansion is established. Then, economic considerations can dictate the final selection. I would point out to the author that GGBFS is not a pozzolan and is not an admixture, but, rather, it is a latent hydraulic cement. An admixture is, by definition, a material other than hydraulic cement. I commend him for suggesting that aggregate producers should become more active in knowing about the reactivity of their products and the precautions needed to permit those products to be safely used in concrete.

The potential for recovery of enriched uranium from spent nuclear fuel which has been consolidated into a nuclear waste form was explored in the studies reported here. The waste form of interest is iron-enriched basalt (IEB)--a silicate-based, fused-cast ceramic. IEB samples were prepared containing fuel assembly materials that simulate the core debris of Three Mile Island Unit II;1,2 the nominal composition of the consolidated waste form is given in Table 1. Ore Types The IEB samples, or man-made uranium ores (MMUO), are in two different mineralogical forms. Each MU0 was made by melting the constituent materials and holding at about 1500°C for 1 h. The MMUOs were then heat treated to control crystallization and crystal growth and then cooled to room temperature.

The past 15 years has .seen a dramatic increase in the use of computers in the mining industry. Sanford (1) has provided a comprehensive listing of available programs by application within the mining industry as a whole. Figure 1 below illustrates some of the primary uses and computer techniques currently in application in surface coal mines. As shown in Figure 1, computers have been applied to virtually every facet of surface mine development and operation. In particular, many programs presently exist to significantly reduce the time and effort required during the, planning and design phase of a surface mine. Close examination of the approach taken to utilize existing programs, however, reveals that in most instances applications have been implemented piecemeal with the result that users must be fairly sophisticated in their knowledge of computer applications.

"Construction projects involve a great many risks. The risk that material prices will increase during construction or that the work under construction will be destroyed by fire, storm or some other act of God are just a few examples. In tunneling or other underground projects, one of the most significant risks is that the subsurface conditions encountered during construction will differ from what is expected. Each of these risks must be accounted for, managed and, ultimately, the duty of one party or the other to bear. The primary tool used to allocate the risks among the parties is the construction contract.How construction contracts allocate the risk that subsurface conditions will differ have changed substantially over the past century. Today, construction contracts typically allocate the risk through a series of provisions. The first is the differing site condition or changed condition clause. That clause, when included, typically provides that the owner bears the risk that the subsurface conditions will differ from what is indicated in the contract documents or what is reasonably expected. The second clause is one that provides that the contractor must conduct a reasonable site investigation and bear the risk of any conditions that such an investigation would reveal. The third provision includes disclaimers that are often included in geotechnical data provided by the owner (or the owner’s engineer) to the contractor which attempts to limit the information on which the contractor can rely. Because these risk-allocating devices seem to be somewhat conflicting, a brief discussion of each provides critical insight in understanding how the modern construction contract allocates the risk of differing site conditions.At the start of the 20th century, construction contracts looked substantially different than they do today. For example, one contract for the construction of a public water tunnel in Chicago, IL, drafted around 1895 contained the following clause:The contractor must take the work entirely at his own risk. No extra allowance will be made for quicksand, hardpan or boulders."
