In this study, we try to illustrate what new technology can mean for the individual miner. We formulate the notion of Mining 4.0, where we attempt to create an image of how the future might look from a miner’s perspective and how mining companies might navigate their way to a future that works for all miners.

X. Huang (1997) recently suggested a poroelastic model for simulating the hydraulic fracturing breakdown pressure. His paper began with a discussion questioning Haimson and Fairhurst's (H&F) model. He claimed that the H&F model failed to lead to the Hubbert and Willis (H&W) model as[ a --> 0.] Huang also tried to explain why the H&F model could only work for special types of rock conditions. He pointed out that one possible reason could be that the Terzaghi's effective-stress concept had been adopted. The H&F model (Haimson and Fairhurst, 1969) was derived under the conditions that the borehole wall is fully penetrated (pp = pi) and a drained state is realized (steady pore-pressure field). Cui et al. (1997a) demonstrated that, under drained conditions, the total stresses in the penetrating poroelastic model (identical to the H&F model) degenerate into their counterparts in the elastic model (identical to the H&W model) as [a -- 0.] However, the effective-stress conditions are different for both of these models, because different pore-pressure conditions at the borehole wall were adopted. In the H&W model, p = po was assumed, i.e., the pore pressure field is not disturbed; but pp = pi was assumed in the H&F model. Assuming that Terzaghi's effective-stress controls tensile failure (that was the hypothesis adopted in both the H&F and the H&W models), only the following two special drained poroelastic cases may degenerate into the H&W model for very small a: • when the pore pressure at the borehole wall remains at the same level as the virgin pore pressure for a penetrating model and when the borehole wall is simply impermeable (i.e., the nonpenetrating model, Cui et al., 1997b). Therefore, simply setting a = 0 in the H&F model generally does not lead to the same problem described by the H&W model. On the other hand, when the porepressure boundary conditions do not correspond to the ones in the H&W model, a degeneration of the poroelastic model to the H&W model as [a – 0] should be questionable. The pore pressure at the borehole wall is generally dependent on the injection-fluid pressure and the penetrating conditions at the borehole wall, such as the existence of a filter-cake. For an impermeable wall, pp is independent of Pi, and it is basically an unknown [(how¬ever, pp -- po as t --oo).] For a fully permeable wall, pp is the same as Pi. Between these two extremes, pp should be a function of p; and the permeable condition of the borehole wall, which may be dependent of the leak-off coefficient cf. (the range of cf is from 0 to 1). Theoretically, for a rock with low permeability, a penetrating borehole wall is still possible. For saturated porous materials with very low values of a, poroelasticity shows that a pore pressure will be built up due to the stress concentration subjected to a nonhydrostatic in situ stress field (Cheng et al., 1993). This phenomenon is known as the Skempton effect. The variation of the pore pressure may be evaluated by [AP = 3 B(A rr + 06ee + A (Y,,)] (1) where B is the Skempton pore pressure coefficient. This pore pressure variation dissipates as time increases (it is totally gone as the drained state is approached). The rate of the dissipation mainly rely on the permeability of the formation. The dissipation is very slow for tight formations because their permeability is very low, and it is fast for rocks of high permeability. According to our analyses, the time period for this process could be from seconds (for sandstone's) to a couple of days (for stales). One possible reason that the H&C model did not agree well with the experimental results for rocks with low permeability might be that the time interval between the application of the loading and the fluid injection had not been long enough for the dissipation of the Skempton effect. The effective-stress law basically defines how much pore pressure contributes to the total stress. The difference between Terzaghi's effective stress and Biot's effective stress is that 100% of the pore pressure contributes to the total stress in Terzaghi's definition, while only a certain portion of the pore pressure ((ap) goes to the total stress in Biot's definition. Therefore, when the pore pressure at the boretole wall (pp) is determined according to Biot's effective-stress law, app in the total tangential stress is attributed to the pore pressure. "Pumping backfilling medium used to fill in holes and caverns in mines is challenging. The often viscous, high solids materials are extremely abrasive and can destroy pumping systems in a matter of days. While a number of options are available, using a progressing cavity pump can often be the best solution. High pressure and capacity capabilities, coupled with low wear rates, ensures reliable cost effective operation.Thickened slurry backfilling for underground/excavation mining applicationsVoids and caverns develop as a result of mining operations penetrating deep into the earth seeking natural resources. After extracting all the ore from a mine, operators need to fill in these voids to preserve the integrity of the mine structure. They do this by pumping in a backfill medium. Each mine uses a different mix of components for backfilling, depending upon the mine’s specific structural requirements and environmental concerns, particularly water requirements. Most backfill mixes contain cement, or another cement-like substance, that acts as a binder to hold the backfill medium together. This is combined with tailings (unused rocks and waste from processing and/or extraction), and may also include chemicals or other binders to increase the material’s strength.Backfill pumping challengesPumping the backfilling medium can be a significant undertaking. This process involves transporting very viscous and high solid materials; the mix may contain 60-80 percent solids. These backfill slurries are extremely abrasive and the viscous material can wreak havoc with pumping systems. The material’s paste-like consistency presents problems for standard centrifugal pumps often used in other mining applications.Added complexity is posed when trying to achieve the required pressure, which depends upon how far away the material has to be pumped. It is not difficult to meet the pressure requirements if mixing the backfill material close to the area to be filled. However, pumping from extreme distances can be problematic — a great deal of pressure is required to transport the material from the mixing area to a distant backfilling site. Ideally, operators should be as close as possible to where they are filling, so they can use a smaller pump with lower power requirements."

A majority of the chemical process industry uses lime in either a powder or liquid form. Engineering and maintenance personnel often face a long and potentially expensive trial-and-error period in order to find the best process equipment to handle lime. Limestone is mined from a quarry in the form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Then, it is crushed and fed into a kiln at approximately 1,093° C (2,000° F), where the carbon dioxide is burned off (calcining) to make calcium oxide (CaO).

Unlike traditional mining on land or ?dry? mining, relatively little is known of ?wet? or offshore mining within the industry. However, dredge mining has several benefits over dry mining, including high unit capacity, as well as lower operating and transport costs. IHC Merwede, a company with expertise in wet mining, is keen to raise awareness and help the industry move forward from dry to wet mining. The idea of mining offshore is not a new one. With global head grades declining, certain operations still have extensive resources of lower grade mineralization in their concession area. These operations require a lower cost, high volume solution for which dredge mining can provide an economic alternative. Interest in dredge mining has recently returned, and there is an increasing tendency to use dredge mining for the removal of overburden or the rehandling of tailing ponds.

Attrition scrubbers may not be glamorous, but they are an important and sometimes neglected step in mineral processing. Optimal attritioning will significantly improve the results and efficiencies of subsequent processing steps and can lead to reduced costs and improved product yields. Why is attrition scrubbing used? Attrition means to wear away a surface, typically by friction or abrasion. An attrition scrubber does exactly this, using impellers to force particles against each other, causing intense scrubbing, grinding, abrasion and polishing. This process is not a new concept. It has long been used in the glass industry to remove surface contaminants from silica. But it is also widely used in many areas of mineral processing and other applications including soil remediation and plastics recycling. In mineral separation, for example, the scrubbers help improve yield and efficiencies by preparing feed materials for downstream processes such as flotation, magnetic or electrostatic separation. Inefficient scrubbing can lead to coatings remaining on valuable minerals and decreased yields, as the covered minerals cannot be processed efficiently or are mistaken as waste contaminates and removed. In the example of flotation separation, pre-flotation conditioning uses attrition scrubbers to provide better recovery of minerals while using fewer chemicals. If surface contaminants remain on the mineral, yield is reduced, as the unwanted coating acts as a barrier to the reactants, which make it unfloatable and, therefore, unrecoverable.

"INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES The operational safety of long and very long rail tunnels represents a key issue in all development stages, including design, construction, commissioning and operation. The spectrum of potential threats is very broad and challenging. These issues can only be mastered by means of a proper combination of a number of safety measures at various levels. This paper focuses on the specific safety issues and the extremely challenging conditions characterizing very long and deep tunnels. They include a significantly increased risk during operation that the incident train cannot exit the tunnel by its own means, long self-rescue and rescue distances, the presence of a number of trains, possibly mixed traffic as well as significant thermal issues. Amberg Engineering is strongly involved in the design and construction of most long and very long rail tunnels in Europe, including in particular the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT), Lyon-Turin Base Tunnel (LTF) and the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT). The combined experience arising from these tunnels forms an invaluable body of expertise, which is summarized in this paper. The focus is on shared issues with practical relevant examples and project-specific solutions. Special attention will be devoted to the 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel, which will be operational by mid-2016 and will be the longest infrastructure tunnel worldwide. VERY LONG TUNNELS IN EUROPE Overview From the point of view of safety, tunnels in excess of about 20 km exhibit a significantly increased risk that incident trains could stop within the tunnel. This is related to the European Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) on rolling stock, to be discussed in the chapter on rescue stations. This paper will specifically focus on the following longest tunnels in construction or operation, listed in Table 1."

"The mining industry is a tough business. The obstacles faced in attempting to run a mine - much less build a new one - go beyond an orebody’s geology. There was a time when commodity prices dictated whether or not to build or expand a mine. Today, though, the challenges faced by miners include social responsibility, environmental regulations and a myriad of needed permits on several governmental levels that every miner knows will be challenged by opponents every step of the way. With all of those challenges, and others not mentioned here, it’s a wonder anyone would stay in the industry. But they do. In fact, more than 2,100 mining professionals from around the world gathered in Reno, NV last December for the American Exploration and Mining Association’s (AEMA) annual conference. That is an impressive number, considering that commodity prices remain in the doldrums, preventing companies from building many new mines and limiting expansions at existing ones. Even so, attending such a conference allows these mining industry pros to learn new and more efficient ways to operate their mines and plants through the dozens of technical presentations the conference offered. And mingling with their peers provided another avenue for learning. The AEMA conference also attracted many of the industry’s leading equipment and service providers (228 exhibitors in 246 booths). Technical presentationsThe AMEA meeting is known for its variety of high quality technical presentations and the 2014 conference was no exception. Some of the topics include new technologies in surface and underground mining, explorers and emerging producers, mine closure and remediation, regulations and reserves reporting, hydrology and new innovations in mining. The concept of sustainable development is not new to the mining industry. Many people involved with mining have argued that the industry throughout the world has always supported the communities where they operated. They say that the mining industry was employing sustainable development practices before the phrase became fashionable. The mines employed residents and supported the local economy through tax payments and the purchase of goods and services from local businesses. In many cases, mining companies have built medical facilities and contributed money, equipment and services to local schools. In modern times, mining companies have donated reclaimed land to the local communities for use as parks and recreational facilities.

The ability to identify hazards during a workplace examination is a critical skill for mineworkers to have in order to maintain a safe workplace. While research suggests that being able to successfully recognize hazards requires a complex set of competencies, it is unclear which competencies are most critical to adequately perform a workplace examination. This paper presents a hazard recognition competencies framework as an explanation of the competencies that affect mineworker hazard recognition. To better understand how the industry is selecting and preparing workplace examiners, researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) interviewed nine health and safety (H&S) professionals at surface stone, sand and gravel mine sites throughout the United States. These interviews verified that the competencies included in the hazard recognition competencies framework agree with perceptions of the interviewed H&S professionals, who also provided validity for the critical role these competencies play. Finally, the results of this study are presented within the context of current NIOSH research findings related to hazard recognition.

Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) studied the impact of an unregulated dust control technology (the Helmet-CAM) and a regulated dust control technology (the continuous personal dust monitor) within a sociotechnical system (STS) framework to mitigate respirable dust sources. The results address how to best incorporate the overarching principles of meta-design STS during the technology integration process. Specifically, quantitative and qualitative data show that a prominent focus on the social factors within an STS framework could help reduce organizational unpredictability and may improve communication within the system to help reduce technology adoption time.

The location and orientation of fire suppression nozzles is critical in suppressing mobile mine equipment fires. To effectively suppress such fires, optimization needs to be considered for the suppression nozzle locations and discharge angle. Detailed experiments were conducted to study the effectiveness of fire suppression agents with different nozzle configurations. A variety of fire suppression systems including dry chemical, wet chemical, dual agent (dry and wet chemical), carbon dioxide, and water mist were used. Six types of nozzle locations were studied, and their fire suppression effectiveness were compared. Results from this work highlight potential considerations when determining effective fire suppression designs.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates world production of natural zeolites to be 2.7 Mt (3 million st) in 2013. China ranked ?rst with 2 Mt (2.2 million st), followed by the Republic of Korea at 230 kt (253,000 st) and Turkey at 50 kt (55,000 st). Japan?s production is reported to have increased as a result of zeolites, reportedly low grade local mordenites, being used to treat the low-level radioactive contaminants in the areas surrounding the damaged reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. China and other countries? high-volume, low-value construction applications, which include dimension stone, pozzolans and lightweight aggregate, are also included in production. This means the production data does not accurately indicate the quantities used in high-value added specialty applications. Consumption in the United States, according to USGS estimates, increased slightly, to an estimated 71.3 kt (78,400 st). Domestic uses for natural zeolites were, in decreasing order by tonnage, animal feed, pet litter, cement (primarily down-hole cement applications by the drilling industry), water purification, odor control, waste water cleanup, fungicide or pesticide carrier, gas absorbent, fertilizer carrier, oil absorbent, desiccant, catalyst and aquaculture. The six leading uses accounted for more than 70 percent of the domestic natural zeolite sales tonnage.

"In this review, the sintering process is first described and analyzed to identify the key factors affecting the structure and quality of iron ore sinter. Under fixed sintering conditions, the granulation efficiency, nucleus stability and primary sinter melt volume and properties of the iron ore are considered to have significant influence on the sinter structure and quality. Discussion is then focused on the effects of the chemical, physical and mineralogical characteristics of the iron ore on these key factors, and the consequences for sinter quality.IntroductionSintering is the most economic and widely used agglomeration process to prepare iron ore fines for blastfurnace use. In modern blast furnaces, particularly in East Asia, iron ore sinter typically constitutes more than 70% of blast-furnace ferrous feed. High sinter quality and efficient sinter production are thus required both to withstand extreme operating conditions and maintain the productivity of modern blast furnaces. At the same time, due to the increasing depletion of high-grade iron ore resources from large deposits, iron ore producers are moving toward developing an increasing number of deposits of much smaller sizes to maintain current production levels. It is therefore imperative for iron ore producers to develop long-term strategies to maintain the quality and consistency of the iron ore fines they are producing while exploiting these smaller, complex deposits. The iron grade, gangue minerals present, overall mineralogy as well as physical characteristics of iron ore fines being mined from these different deposits vary considerably. Overall, ores now have highly complex mineralogy, are becoming more porous and friable, and contain increasing amounts of gangue minerals, which will have important implications for the sintering process and sinter quality.Blending is one of the most effective options being explored by iron ore producers to deal with multiple small complex deposits. This allows the iron ore producers to reduce the number of products and take full advantage of the unique characteristics of each individual deposit to achieve long-term product consistency while increasing production. Blending is also a common practice in sinter plants as it is almost impossible to produce from one single ore a high-performance sinter mixture with the required processing characteristics. A typical sinter mixture used in Japanese steel mills (Nakano and Okazaki, 2007; Matsumura et al., 2013) often contains five or more ores to achieve balanced sinter quality and productivity with relatively low cost of raw materials."

An understanding of the spatial and temporal variations of surface moisture content over a heap leach pad is essential for leaching production and to achieve a high ore recovery. The current leach-pad monitoring and data-collection practice remains highly labor intensive and exposes technical staff to cyanide solution, a hazardous material. To address these challenges, we propose using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with thermal imaging sensors to remotely obtain image data with high temporal and spatial resolution for monitoring the surface moisture distribution over heap leach pads. A field study was conducted over a sprinkler-irrigated heap leach pad at El Gallo gold mine in Sinaloa, Mexico, and the acquired data were used to generate moisture distribution maps of the heap leach pad’s surface. The created moisture maps provide direct visualizations of surface moisture variation over the surveyed area. Such graphical results are effective tools for inspecting heap-leaching operations.

In recent years, a new concept in the control of electrically powered excavators has come into existence. The new type of control system has come to be known as "static" control. The use of the name "static" to describe this system is somewhat misleading since this term refers only to one of the many advantages of this very important advance in excavator control systems. In 1959, the first truly "static" control for Ward-Leonard equipped electric excavators was designed, developed and placed in service. The control system, originally intended only as a more modern electronic type of alternate to the tried and proven rotating amplifier control system then in use, has since proven to be much more.

There is much interest in the automation of entire comminution circuits, At the present technological level it is possible to automate a circuit but to date it has not been done, To successfully automate a circuit, a number of problems must be solved. Not all of them are engineering problems. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of these problems, as certain the implications of these problems and indicate solutions to them. In this paper the term "automation" is used loosely but in the popular sense. Namely, that a plant is automated if a computer is used to control the basic flow of the materials as well as setting the critical parameters in the process. Specifically, the discussion will concern itself with the control of comminution circuits from the dumping of the ore into the primary crusher until the final interface between the comminution circuit and say, the flotation mill in the case of a sulfide ore.

"The times they are a changing, and, for the mining industry, the optimism is high. On Nov. 8, Donald Trump was elected as the 45th president of the United States, and the Republican Party won a majority of seats in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, ushering in what many hope will be a positive change for the mining and extractive minerals industries.Trump has stated that one of his top priorities as president will be to increase spending on the nation’s infrastructure, which could help spark a boom for mining. He has also pledged to bring back coal jobs and reverse many of the environmental regulations that were put in place by the Obama administration. However, before the mining industry gets too far ahead of itself and plans for another Super Cycle, there are stark reminders that any work in the natural resources sector is complicated and challenging. On Dec. 4, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that it would not grant an easement that would allow the Dakota Access Pipeline to pass under a portion of the Missouri River in North Dakota. The proposed crossing of the oil pipeline is approximately a half a mile upstream from the Standing Rock Sioux’s Reservation, and for months, hundreds of protestors camped out at the site in an effort to halt the project, saying they feared how it would impact water supplies and sacred lands.Energy Transfer Partners, the company building the pipeline, said the pipeline is a $3.78-billion investment that will connect the Bakken and Three Forks production areas to major refining markets. The company signed voluntary easement agreements with landowners representing more than 85 percent of the properties along the four-state route but faced an organized protest from the Sioux Nation at Standing Rock. The protest gathered momentum and support through social and traditional media and became the focal point of global environmental and indigenous activism. The protestors claimed victory, at least temporarily, when the Corps of Engineers said it would look for alternative routes for the project. It’s a decision that could lead to a lengthy environmental review and one that has the potential to block the construction of the pipeline for months or even years."

In response, Rio Tinto has successfully introduced innovative approaches to learning and employee engagement via leveraging the power of globally distributed networks for peer-to-peer knowledge transfer and providing mechanisms to recognise, reward and retain the individual technical contributors.

"INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The world needs visionary people to break new ground and bring development forward. The human race has an inherent power and lust to explore and push borders, but also to connect and bring people together. Transport of people and goods has through history been a key factor to develop societies and increase collaboration between people and regions. Today, in the era of globalization, efficient transport systems are still vital for further development. Often, ideas of bold projects, like long bridges or tunnels, have been raised long before those projects are realized and actually built. This shows that visions must gradually be transformed into feasible business cases and sustainable political solutions. In some cases also technological development is necessary to make visions come true. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, indeed a visionary engineer, completed the oldest underwater tunnel in the world when the Thames Tunnel in London was opened in 1843. This tunnel is still in operation and now part of London’s rail transport system. Another milestone for the tunnelling industry was passed when the 54 km long Seikan tunnel in Japan was opened in 1988 after more than 15 years of construction. This tunnel is presently the world’s longest railway tunnel. Together with the 50.5 km long Channel tunnel between the UK and France, which has the longest undersea portion 37.9 km, they constitute examples of pioneering engineering projects that bring the industry forward. In 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel will be opened and then becomes the longest railway tunnel in the world with its 57.1 km. The trend is obvious that tunnels throughout the world are getting longer and longer. The Brenner Basis Tunnel presently under construction will yet again break the record being 64 km long. Presently, a number of even longer tunnels are planned and under design, some of these also have very long subsea portions, e.g. Bohai Straight Tunnel (123 km), Irish Sea Tunnel (around 100 km) and the Helsinki – Tallin fixed link (approximately 90 km). Northern Europe sees an increasing demand on efficient transport corridors to meet the growth of freight transportation between the Scandinavian Peninsula and central-Eastern Europe. Sustainable solutions will be required, and a shift from road/maritime transports to rail is imperative. Consequently, this paper describes yet another visionary project, a fixed railway link between Sweden and Germany, the Shortcut, to enhance traffic between these regions and to make it greener. It is true that this project still requires some work from politicians, economists and engineers to be realized, however, building a 100 km long tunnel under the Baltic Sea may become reality sooner than we think."
