The "Old Reliable" four million pound blast in March of 1972 marked the opening, as far as is known, of serious efforts to commercialize the In Situ concept. That was a coyote shot, and it was followed by three blasts at McAlester Fuel's "Zonia" operation which were surface hole shots. As the only individual who had a principal part in all four shots, it seems to be appropriate to present experiences in the developments and evolutions of the in Situ method of ore extraction. Some of the problems will be described, along with proposals for management of such projects in the future.

Longwall mining is considered the most efficient underground coal mining technique in terms of coal extraction ratio, production rate, and safety standards. Due to the increasing demand for higher coal production, wider panel and faster face movement have become the recent trends. Thus, longwall mining can create unexpected threats such as roof falls, excessive face convergence, shield damage and numerous maintenance problems causing sudden interruption of coal production and serious safety hazards. A recent study at the University of Alabama is dedicated to develop LoSCoMS (Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System) which integrates real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis, forecasting, and warning modules. The main objectives of this system is to provide the stability and maintenance information, at every minute, such as high load, low setting pressure, leg leakage, etc., analysis of various mining and geological parameters to determine past and present roof characteristics and forecasting of loading patterns for the following mining cycles, next periodic weighting, etc. Using this unique system, mine operating personnel are well aware of past, present and future roof loading patterns at the longwall face, and thus, proper safety measures can be taken ahead of time.

INTRODUCTION The inelastic stress-strain behavior of rocks has urged engineers to seek for the possible application of plasticity to engineering pro¬jects such as tunnels, oil wells, dams, etc. for a long time. Early efforts in this direction have tentatively used the classical theories to solve some axisymmetric problems, in which the rocks were treated as perfectly plastic and nonfrictional materials (Talobre, J. A., 1957). Meanwhile, one of the fundamental assumptions is that the volume strain of elastoplastic material is purely elastic. Drucker and Prager (1952) developed a perfectly plastic and frictional model with a generalized form of Mohr-Coulomb law, which serves as both failure criterion and yield criterion. Although the associated flow rule gives unacceptably large dilatancy, this model is a very important step to deal with the frictional behavior of geological materials. As a further step, Roscoe et al (1963) and Schofield and Wroth (1968) proposed a Cam-clay model, which accounts for the yielding before the material reaches a failure envelope and reflects the plastic volume strain as a strain hardening factor, and the open end of the Drucker-Prager envelope is capped by a family of yield surfaces, the envelope is made conforming with crit¬ical void ratio line. The proposed shapes of the cap have been based on experimental data and on convenience of mathematical descrip¬tions. Drucker, Gibson and Henkel (1957) introduced a spherical cap for soils, while in Cam-clay model the cap is semi-logarithmic yield function derived from the result of triaxial tests. DiMaggio and Sandler (1971) proposed an elliptical model for sand, in which the hardening function depends exponentially on plastic strain. Sandler et al (1976) used a plane cap model to express the behavior of a wide range of geological materials of which the nonlinear hysteretic nature is significant. Mizuno and Chen (1982) illustrated the physical mean¬ing of cap models and their adaption to finite element calculation. In recent years, Carroll et al (1972, 1980) have studied the com¬paction of porous materials under hydrostatic pressure and discussed the mechanism of the nonlinear response thoroughly. Analytical and numerical analysis of the hollow sphere model by Curran and Carroll (1979) predicted an initial yielding surface, dependent on the initial porosity, and showed a strong coupling between hydrostatic and deviatoric effects. All these main features from the abovementioned theoretical research are visualized by the experimental data on Boise sandstone (1984). The combination of such previous work would be logically the construction of a plasticity model for porous rocks which, following the tradition of assigning the name of birthplace to a special model, is called Cal-Rock model (Carrol, M. M., 1984). The results of triaxial tests along different loading paths reveal the compaction characteristics for deviatoric and hydrostatic stress separately. the fitting of the nonlinear stress-strain curves leads to a construction of yield surfaces. Moreover, an uniaxial strain test gives the strength envelope which is the critical state line. The whole model is composed in the frame of elasticity theory. The concept and representation of plasticity used here are in the spirit of Naghdi¬Casey theory (Casey and Naghdi, 1984 and 1984, Naghdi and Trapp, 1975). In order to find the way of using such a plasticity model in engineering problems, the stress field in a thick-walled cylinder of porous material is calculated. This is an axisymmetrical problem with plane strain, which is an idealization of oil well in an infinite medium. Because the constitutive relation is highly nonlinear, a numerical method has been utilized to obtain the solution. CONSTRUCTION OF CAL-ROCK MODEL (1). Elastic-plastic constitutive equations The basic assumption is that the yield surface in stress space depends on one parameter, namely the plastic volume strain, as the data on Boise sandstone suggested. Extractive industry (mining and quarrying operations), as other industrial activities, is subject to environment protection laws, regulation and standards such as the Environmental Impact Assessment directive, Natura 2000, Habitats & Birds directive, Water Framework directive etc The European Commission (EC) is aim to strengthen the EU environmental legislation to improve the (environmental and human) safety of mining activities. The mineral processing and the management of the mining waste will be covered by the new amendment of the Seveso II Directive, by a Best Available Techniques reference document (BREF) describing the Best Available Techniques of mining waste management and a new directive on the mining waste management. At the same time initiatives as the environmental liability, the energy taxation for environmental reasons and the natural resources management policy, which will have a positive impact on the protection of the environment, will affect the extractive industry operation procedures.

The paper covers areas from human error stories, through technical blunders, to outright scams. Included are some stories that involve geology as it relates to metallurgy, warehouses of precious metal concentrates, reagent selection, solutions that treat the symptoms instead of the problems, improper technological transfers, humorous design mistakes in the interest of being exacting, and many more. The stories are all true with the names and dates withheld and the cases presented in the true sense of the "John Doe Stories."

Henderson Mine personnel have more than 20 years experience and have placed more than 400,000 m3 (520,000 cu yd) of shotcrete and concrete. Over the last 20 years, the mine has used a variety of equipment to place concrete, wet shotcrete and dry shotcrete and is constantly trying to cut costs and increase efficiencies. Recently, the mine received a state-of-the-art wet shotcrete placer. The batch plant was automated, and a mobile concrete-form jumbo was fabricated. The mine will also receive a new concrete transport truck. Henderson’s background The Henderson Mine is owned by Climax Molybdenum Co., a unit of Amax, Inc. It is an underground, primary molybdenum producer near Empire, CO. The mill is located between Silverthome and Kremmling, CO and is connected to the mine by 16 km (10 miles) of underground and 8 km (5 miles) of surface track. Except for the ore haulage system which is powered by overhead trolley, all mobile equipment is rubber-tired and diesel-powered.

Groove deepening (deepening of a groove in rock by successive passes of a rock cutting tool) is a potential operational feature associated with tunnel boring machines. Little research has been undertaken in this area which is of direct practical relevance to the design and application of tunnel boring machines. Laboratory experiments using single, double and triple disc arrays have revealed an important fundamental cycle of events associated with disc cutters when progressively deepening a groove. Furthermore, in contrast to pick cutters, groove deepening by discs is shown to be an efficient operation. This can be directly attributed to the increased interaction between disc cutters due to the increase in magnitude of lateral forces generated as a groove is deepened.

The expert system for coal preparation plant design mainly solves the crux--separation flowsheet design and optimization of product structure. There are twelve basic flowsheets available in the system which are representative of financial plants. The system can select better flowsheets automatically according to the property of feed and scale of plant. Then, it can choose the best flowsheet and product model from the better flowsheets through analysis and optimum calculation. The expert system is made up in Turbo Pascal 6.0 and consists of three sub-systems: Lump and grain coal system, coal slimes processing system, and raw coal system. Several representation methods, such as production rule, procedure, and object-oriented programming, are used to express the expert's knowledge in the system. To decide the optimum product structure, Zangwill's method is used to make an advance product model. The expert system has the performance of interpretation strategy, by 'tracer" technology and pre-arrangement text, and of learning new expert's knowledge.

The Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System (LoSCoMS) is designed to monitor shield pressures in real-time from longwall faces and to provide on-line information related to underground strata behavior and longwall mining operation. The information includes shield pressure data with statistical analysis of setting, developing and final pressures, prediction of shield pressures for the following shift or day, etc. and maintenance data on the shields. The LoSCoMS has been installed and tested at Shoal Creek Mine operated by Drummond Company, Inc. The system is providing valuable information to mine operators for better understanding of underground behaviors. As a result, it has become an effective tool for minimizing ground control hazards and reducing out of seam material.

After a good year in 1979-strong mineral demand, adequate prices for most metals, minimal labor problems-1980 was not so good. The US produced $24.8 billion worth of nonfuel minerals last year, up 3.5% from 1979, according to preliminary US Bureau of Mines figures. But the $800 million increase was the smallest annual gain since 1977 and reflected reduced auto and construction industry demand, strikes, and energy shortages. Preliminary figures for 68 minerals show that production of 42 decreased, 25 increased, and one was unchanged. Production of 11 of 21 US-produced minerals was up. Noteworthy mineral events in 1980 included a copper industry strike, increased gold and silver prices, troubles in the iron ore and uranium industries, discussion about a US nonfuels mineral policy, and corporate interest in mining companies as merger targets. Recessionary conditions experienced by the Western world in 1980 resulted in a slowdown in new mine development, evident in the relative scarcity of major new base metal projects. This could lead to short term supply/demand anomalies within the next few years which, in turn, could have a significant effect on metal prices, according to Mining Magazine (Jan. 1981). World Mining (Sept. 1980) noted that US mining strength is in open pit operations. A much lower tonnage is mined underground and is centralized in trona, uranium, lead, zinc, molybdenum, potash and, to a lesser extent, copper. The most notable increase in new underground mines has been in Wyoming's trona district where new mines are being developed and production will increase, the magazine said.

Skam deposits considered as porphyry copper deposits have been classified into three basic prospecting models: (I) the skam deposit associated with a mineralized intrusive (Pima-Mission), (2) the deposit associated with a barren igneous stock (Ertsberg), and (3) mineralized rock that seems to have no clear association with apluton (Phoenix). Pima-Mission, Christmas, and many other copper-bearing skarns developed in carbonate sequences near mineralized intrusives form an important part of the deposit. Historically, copper derived from the mineralized intrusion accounts for less than half of the metal produced by most porphyry mines, as most mineralization occurs in the intruded rocks. Skam mineralization is an important part of wall-rock metal deposition, because carbonate sequences are preferentially replaced by sulfide and skarn minerals. Exploration for skam mineralization is an important phase of porphyry copper exploration. Impure carbonate beds can become better host rocks for skam deposits than pure carbonates, and these in particular should be included in porphyry-exploration programs if the impure strata are cut by the stock. Skam deposits can also form near stocks that are barren of sulfide. In this model, the two best ore guides are strata favorable for mineralization (usually impure carbonate beds) and the intrusive contact. Faults can also act as important ore controls. Some skarn deposits form that have no clear genetic connection with a stock, although intrusive rocks are known in the district. In such cases, the best ore guides are strata and district-wide faulting. Dikes and sills are also common and mineralization can locally prefer their contacts even though the igneous rocks are barren. Skam minerals are influenced by the chemical composition of the carbonate. Forsterite, brucite, tremolite, and talc are common in skams developed in dolomitic beds. Skams derived from calcic beds often contain wollastonite, calcite, stilbite, or idocrase. Diopside, however, is a common accompaniment of copper sulfide in skam regardless of the original composition of the carbonates. Tremolite and possibly other amphiboles and chlorite can occur significantly in the zinc-lead portion of skams. Gamets occur in magnetite, copper, and zinc-lead zones of skams, but are not as diagnostic as diopside for the copper zone or tremolite for the zinc-lead zone. A general desciption of skam-deposit mineralogy can be used to construct prospecting models of porphyry copper skams. An abstract of such a description follows.

Introduction Uranium mining has been actively carried on in Canada for over twenty-five years mainly in Ontario at Elliot Lake in Bancroft, and in Northern Saskatchewan at the operations of Eldorado Nuclear Ltd. During this period, approximately one hundred million tons of mill tailings have been created and lie mainly on the surface close to the mining and milling installations. If all of the present reserves of uranium ores in Canada are mined, a further eight hundred million tons of mine tailings could be created in Ontario, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, Labrador and British Columbia. The present control of effluents from existing tailings is managed by the operating mines under the regulations of both federal and provincial control agencies. It is the long-term effect of these tailings on the environment that has not been clearly defined or measured. Several years ago, the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, embarked upon a program of research directed at the long-term effects of uranium mine tailings. Much of the research to date has been on tailings in the Elliot Lake, Ontario area where some tailings piles have existed for over twenty years. The program consists of two projects, one to address the problem of existing tailings and the other to examine alternatives in the management of current and future tailings. TAILINGS CHARACTERISTICS Uranium tailings are generally the result of sulphuric acid leaching in which the uranium and alkaline minerals such as carbonates and chlorites are leached out. If the ore contains sulphides, these minerals potentially present an additional hazard of acid generation over time and could increase the mobility of heavy metals and some radionuclides such as thorium-230. Except for the extracted uranium, most of the radionuclides from the ore remain in the tailings pile. Uranium ores in Canada span a wide variety of mineralization and associated gangue composition. Uranium minerals include pitchblende, uraninite, uranothorite, brannerite and the phosphate uranium minerals autunite and saleeite. Gangue minerals vary from acid consuming carbonates, and chlorites to acid producing sulphides and inert silicates. With such a wide variety in ore composition, the characteristics of the resultant tailings in Canada are in many cases site specific and the solutions to the long-term effects of these tailings may also be site specific.

INTRODUCTION The concern of occupational exposure to diesel exhaust pollutants is an important workplace issue for the mining industry. During the last three decades of diesel operations at Inco, a significant amount of research and improvement has been made in the area of work environment, and effective diesel operation. This paper will review the experience gained by Inco's Ontario Division from the implementation and the use of modern engines, improved fuel quality, and the exhaust control technology, coupled with adherence to proper maintenance and ventilation design and practices. Past monitoring practices and the current occupational monitoring program at lnco are outlined. A major new research initiative involving multi-stake holders in diesel performance is described. MINING IN THE SUDBURY AREA The discovery of nickel-copper ore in the Sudbury area dates back to the year 1856. The existence of this orebody was noticed when a strong compass deflection was observed by a provincial surveyor. This discovery, even though documented in official re- ports, failed to arouse any public attention at that time. In 1884, a rock-cut was blasted through a small hill near the village of Sudbury to permit laying track for the Canadian Pacific Railway (Boldt 1967). The rock-cut uncovered a body of massive sulfides with a copper content of over nine percent. The mineralization is concentrated along the outer margin of the Sudbury Basin, an oval-shaped structure having a dimension of 55 x 95 kilometres. The ore extends down-dip to to at least 3000 metres below the surface. The mining methods at lnco can be divided into two categories: "filled-stope" and 'bulk" mining. This division, in the broad sense, may also reflect the environmental conditions of the mine. In the past, the selection of a mining method was based on the size, shape, grade and the strength of the ore and its surroundings. The recent development of improved technology and mining equipment permitted wider application of low cost bulk mining methods. UNDERGROUND DIESEL EQUIPMENT The first diesel-powered machine, a 145-horsepower scooptram, was put into operation in March 1966, in a cut-and-fill stoping complex at Frood Mine. The number of diesel machines underground in the Inco, Ontario Division, mines was increased to 360 units by 1971,550 in 1977 (Rutherford 1978), and over 830 diesel-powered units in 1995. The following list indicates current mobile diesel equipment. LHD 194 Loaders 81 Trucks 28 Jumbo Drills 78 Personnel Carrier 101 Service Equipment 155 Locomotives 50 Bolters 30 Scissor Lift 113 About 20 percent of the LHD and truck units are equipped with electronic fuel controlled engines. COMPOSITION OF DIESEL EXHAUST Diesel exhaust contains hundreds of pollutants (Watts 19921, including components of unburned fuel and lubricating oil and products of incomplete combustion of the fuel and oil. These pollutants are emitted either as gases or as particles. Gaseous pollutants include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur ox- ides, as well as a variety of organic compounds, such as hydro- carbons, aldehydes, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. The particle phase, also known as diesel particulate matter (DPM), is the filterable portion of diesel exhaust. Figure 1 depicts the trimodal particle size distribution that arises from different mechanisms of aerosol generation (Cantrell and Rubow 1992). Primary combustion aerosols, including diesel exhaust aerosol, are formed as very small particles (in the 0.001 to 0.08 micrometre range), but physical mechanisms such as condensation and coagulation quickly transfer the aerosol mass from the nuclei mode to the accumulation mode. These processes result in a mass median diameter of approximately 0.2 micrometres for diesel particulate matter, and 90% of the particles are less than 1.0 micrometre in size. These particles have a high surface area, permitting the adsorption of different substances produced during combustion. Mechanically generated aerosols, on the other hand, typically contain particles greater than 1 micrometre in diameter. The particle phases of diesel exhaust contain three components (Bagley, et al, 1996) shown by Figure 2, namely: a carbon- aceous fraction composed mainly of solid-carbon particles, a sulfate fraction containing small hydrated sulfate particles, and a soluble fraction that contains compounds that are soluble in organic solvents and are adsorbed or condensed onto carbon core particles. These compounds consist primarily of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons and PAH's and may contribute 15% to 45% of the weight of the total particulate matter (Schuetzle, 1983). The control of these pollutants is necessary to ensure a healthy work environment. The segregation process has been known for many years and applied industrially for the treatment of various refractory copper ores. The principles of the process are briefly reviewed; the process was tested in the laboratory on two copper-cobalt oxide ores from Gecamines, Shaba Province, Zaire. Various parameters of the process, such as segregation temperature, dosage of reducing and chloridizing agents and flotation conditions were inyestigated. Experimental results have shown that the segregation of copper could proceed satisfactorily at low temperature (1000° K) but that of cobalt required higher temperature and higher additions of reducing and chloridizing agents.

Newmont Mining Corporation owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006. Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix needed a process option to treat lowgrade transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore was being mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a run-of-mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the synergies and challenges of developing a copper L-SX/EW plant at the Phoenix copper-gold mill.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION History The most striking feature of mining in the United States has been the infrequent use of longwall systems. This system, which accounts for the majority of coal production in Europe, Japan, and other countries, is only recently growing out of its infancy in the mining of normal coal seams and is still untried in the mining of thick coal seams in the US. Its use in the mining of metal and nonmetal ore bodies has been virtually ig¬nored, except for isolated instances in trona, copper, and uranium. Longwall mining is believed to have originated in Shropshire, England, towards the end of the 17th cen¬tury (Laird, 1973). Although the method used would be considered primitive by today's standards, many of the basic concepts have remained unchanged. Longwall mining of coal in the US was first introduced before the turn of the century, but it never gained acceptance as it did in Europe. Historically, longwalling was a cyclic method where a single cut of coal was removed from the face on the producing shift each day, and the work of building stone packs in the gob and manually moving roof support was completed on the off shifts. Due to the amount of dead work, productivity was extremely low. In Europe, however, longwall methods were required despite the high costs involved, because only by this method could coal under heavy depth be mined with any reasonable degree of recovery. Reserves of coal lying under shallow cover, and therefore minable by room¬and-pillar methods, were long ago inadequate to supply most of Europe's coal requirements. In the US coal min¬ing has historically proceeded laterally with the new mines in virgin areas to replace old mines; in Great Britain, Germany, Japan, and many other countries, mining must proceed downward to greater depths. The depth of cover for most coal operations in the US is shallow, i.e., 61 to 305 m (200 to 1000 ft). This, combined with large reserves, has made room-and-pillar methods almost universally applicable. However, longwall systems were tried around the turn of the century. Whenever used, it was frequently noted that the opera¬tion was under the direction of men with foreign ex¬perience and was tried under ideal conditions. Some of the mines that were using longwall or had tried longwall prior to 1910 were the Radiant mine, CO; Vinton Coal Co., PA; Cambria Steel Co., Johnstown, PA; Grundy County and Spring Valley, IL; and unnamed mines in Washington, West Virginia, Kentucky, Iowa, and Kansas. As late as 1961, there was one circular longwall in operation at Centerville, IA. The first modern-day op¬eration to take advantage of European technology and longwall methods was Kaiser Steel Corp. at its Sunnyside mine near Price, UT. Due to deep cover and extremely poor roof conditions, combined with a need for in¬creased production, Kaiser management decided a new method was required and turned to longwall in 1961. The first longwall consisted of an Anderson Mavor shearer loader, British Jeffrey-Diamond conveying equip¬ment, and Dowty roof supports with a capacity made up of two and three 27-t (30-st) capacity props. After nor¬mal start-up problems, this unit averaged over 454 t (500 st) per shift (White and Palacios, 1976). During and after World War II, technology in hy¬draulics and controls had advanced to the point that self-advancing supports and hydraulic props were being developed. In 1960 only I % of West German produc¬tion was from mechanized longwall faces. This in¬creased to 37% in 1970 and 63% in 1973 (Kohlgruber, 1974). In 1976 there were 246 coal mines operating in the United Kingdom. Although this is only 50% of those operating ten years ago, the production has increased 42%, mainly through improvements in longwall equipment and methods (Hunter, 1976). In France and other European countries, the devel¬opment of longwall mechanization has been similar in seams up to 2.44 m (8 ft) thick. In seams that exceed 9.14 m (30 ft), a variety of longwall caving has been developed for coal seams with dips of 0 to 1.6 rad (0 to 90°). Those with the greatest success will be discussed later. As noted, the development of longwall mining to its present state of the art has mainly taken place since World War II with substantial gains in the last ten years. Mechanized longwall has been the result of several re¬lated major innovations (Jackson, 1975) 1) Development of the flexible armored face con¬veyor which can be installed along the face and moved forward without disassembly. 2) Development of face machines such as single and double drum shearer and coal plows which operate in conjunction with the armored conveyors. 3) Development of self-advancing hydraulic roof supports which now include chocks, chock shields, and shields. 4) Reliance of caving of the immediate roof based on proper planning and development. 5) Use of pneumatic slowing to enable extraction below overbuilt areas. The most recent developments in the mining of coal by longwall in the US include the introduction of shield supports at Kaiser's York Canyon mine in New Mexico, single-entry longwall development at Kaiser's Sunnyside mine, and Mid-Continent's advancing longwall system in Colorado. Metal and nonmetal longwall systems in the US have included the mining of copper at White Pine, MI; uranium in Utah and New Mexico, and trona in Wyoming.

Metallurgical Accounting in the mineral processing industry transforms accumulated process data, including flow rates and assays, into a coherent information format. This is used to rapidly provide production reporting and key performance indications. A fully comprehensive and coherency of available data must be a component of any system expected to accomplish reconciliation in the mass balancing process. Quality issues are thus improved with such desired methods via a mass-balancing engine utilizing the results of measurements acquired by various on-line sensors, analyzers, and sophisticated laboratory equipment. Metallurgical Accounting, when accomplished through such an engine, provides high value information in a simple, straightforward, and simplified manner. Exceptional utility is then transparently available to authorized personnel for access to metallurgical accounting reports, production reports, mass balance results, performance indicators, and so on. This paper discusses how such information can be used to "drilldown" into each result set by consulting the data hierarchy to evaluate and validate calculations and input data used to produce the specific results being queried. The power of such a system resides in the full and true integration of all production and laboratory data. What is integrated are the data thus acquired via a single user interface, a single database, a single configuration tool, etc. From this comes the derivation of contextual information and its maintenance. It is possible to reduce metallurgical accounting and production reporting from possibly hours or even days to a matter of minutes. The result is maximization of information reliability and availability from masses of otherwise discrete and difficult to access key data.

A technique is described for the solvent extraction of zirconium. In this method, zirconium has been extracted quantitatively from 0.005 M sodium salicylate solution at pH 2.5 - 3 using 0.01 M triphenylphosphine oxide dissolved in toluene as an extractant. Zirconium has also been recovered quantitatively from 0.2 M potassium thiocyanate solution, but extractions in nitric and hydrochloric acids (as media) were negligible. The resulting extracted metal ion has been stripped with sulfuric acid (0.5 M) and determined with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. This method has been applied successfully to achieve 95% recovery of zirconium from zircon concentrate.

Flocculation of fine coal is usually accomplished with the addition of commercially available organic flocculants. Recently it has been shown that biopolymers derived from microorganisms can be used to flocculate coal. The biopolymers flocculate coal efficiently and render the coal surface hydrophobic. The increase in hydrophobicity can be utilized either to separate the coal flocs from mineral matter. It can also be used for reducing the moisture content of fine coal. In this regard, flocculation and settling tests of fine coal with biopolymers and synthetic flocculants was undertaken and the results are discussed here. Also, a transport model was developed for the time-dependent settling tests for fine coal.

"There is certainly no argument that LED lighting systems have taken a strong foothold in the lighting marketplace over the last several years. This has even proven true in the world of transportation and transit lighting, for which new LED cobra head style luminaires are replacing traditional HID cobra head luminaires on North America’s roadwaysand linear LED light fixtures are replacing conventional linear fluorescent light fixtures in North American rail transit facilities. However, LED technology has taken a while longer to penetrate the very specific market of vehicular tunnel lighting in this continent. Though both the New York/New Jersey Holland and Lincoln Tunnels have recently been retrofitted with LED lighting, and an LED Lighting RFP is currently out for Boston’s Central Artery Tunnels, very few vehicular tunnels in North America to date have been illuminated with LED light fixtures. This is largely because cost effective LED lighting, that met our typically stringent tunnel lighting standards, was until recently simply unattainable. However, with the rapid advances in LED technology over recent years, owners and specifiers of North American tunnel lighting projects have finally begun to adopt LED lighting systems as the norm. In fact, a recent Lux Fit/Yole Development “LED in Road and Street Lighting Report” stated that “LED luminaire growth will be driven firstly by tunnel lighting, and then relayed into highway, road, residential and amenity lighting applications starting in 2014.” 1 Our highways are continually becoming more congested. As a result, Provincial and State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) are constantly looking for innovative ways to improve traffic flow. One way DOTs are now helping to ease congestion is by expanding the use of tunnels and long underpasses in large interchange reconstruction projects. With less available right-of-way to work with, and the high costs of maintaining elevated bridge structures over the years, it often makes more sense to “go under” (rather than over) the traffic congestion points. With the addition of these new tunnels and long underpasses comes the issue of proper illumination within these structures, for a safe and efficient driving task. DOTs use recommended lighting practices and guidelines for highway lighting, which include specific criteria for tunnels, set by either the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) or the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). However, both IESNA and AASHTO point out that these recommended practices and guidelines are not a mandate, and DOTs are free to make their own decisions about lighting criteria. Accordingly, effectively illuminating tunnels is often times a challenge. This paper will examine the key considerations of the tunnel lighting application in generalas well as what LEDs now bring to the table and how, accordingly, traditional lighting technologies will be phased out in the future illumination of tunnels."
