"A magnetic proximity detection system is mounted on a mobile mining machine to prevent underground workers from being pinned or struck by machine motion. The system generates magnetic fields around the machine to determine safe working distances. The minerworn component measures the magnetic field in order to approximate location. Large masses of steel, such as those from mining equipment, can alter the magnetic field distribution. This affects the locational accuracy of the system, thus adversely impacting worker safety. To examine this problem, U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a method and test system to study the influence of a steel mass on the magnetic field distribution. The results show that a steel plate can strengthen the magnetic field perpendicular to the generator by up to 40 percent. Furthermore, they show that the degree of the influence on the field distribution is a function of distance. The results from this study can be used to further develop and improve the performance and reliability of electromagnetic proximity detection systems used in underground mining applications.IntroductionOn average, 250 miners are injured every year, and 43 miners were reported to be killed by striking or pinning accidents involving continuous mining machines in the United States between 1984 and 2015, according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA, 2015). Continuous mining machines are large mobile machines used to mechanically cut coal in underground mines. These machines weigh approximately 60 t (132,000 lb) each. Although modern continuous mining machines can be remotely controlled, operators still need to be close to the machine primarily because of the low visibility and wide blind spots of the underground working environment.The MSHA promulgated a final regulation in 2015 that requires the use of proximity detection systems on all continuous mining machines except fullface machines. MSHA has approved five such systems to be intrinsically safe for use in underground coal mines: (1) Strata Worldwide’s HazardAvert System, (2) Frederick Mining’s Model 200 HazardAvert Detection System, (3) Nautilus International’s Coal-Buddy System, (4) Matrix Design Group’s M3- 1000/Joy Global SmartZone Gen 1 and (5) Matrix Design Group’s IntelliZone/ Joy Global SmartZone Gen 2."

Classification system efficiency (CSE) is a simple metric that can be used to measure and increase ball milling circuit efficiency. It is defined as the percentage of the ball mill energy being used to grind target (oversize) particles. This paper describes CSE analysis conducted for a variety of operations with related improvements in circuit efficiency ranging from 3 to 30 percent. The achievable CSE for any given ball milling circuit is described, providing the means to determine the extent to which every plant can benefit from increasing grinding circuit CSE.

Florida Power and Light is the fifth largest investor-owned electric utility in the country. It has a service territory that covers 35 counties, or 28,000 square miles, 2.5 million customers, and serves 5.6 million people. The total installed capacity is 13,470 MW, generated by four nuclear units, 36 oil and/or gas fired units, and 48 gas turbine units. Traditionally, FPL has been an oil-based utility. In 1979, this dependency on oil became obvious when 42 million barrels of oil were burned during the year. At that time, it was also projected that, based on the current estimates of customer growth and available generation capacity through 1990, FPL's residual fuel oil consumption would increase from the 1979 level of 42 million barrels (6.7 million m3) per year to approximately 55 million barrels (8.7 million m3) per year by the mid-1990's. Concern over this was further aggravated by the fact that it was difficult to estimate both the price and quantity of fuel oil that would be available over the next decade since changes in the world market, decisions by oil producers and refiners, and international political developments would all affect the availability of oil. Also, at that time, the price of residual fuel oil had increased drastically, and there was no reason to think that these prices would soon stabilize. Thus, oil back-out became a primary objective of FPL and since then, FPL has been actively investigating ways to decrease fuel oil consumption.

H. P. Ferri I refer to the article "Degradation Process in Coal Slurry Pipelines" by M.G. Ayat and B.C. Scott in the September 1988 issue of Mining Engineering. I would like to congratulate Dr. Ayat and his colleague on a very interesting and valuable piece of work. This article is an excellent one, describing a real phenomenon that has been ignored for so long. I do, however, have an objection. The article fails to address the degradation process when coal is processed or transported in other ways than slurry form, particularly those employed in this work. Could, for example, screening (wet or dry) have contributed to the extent of degradation? Perhaps scanning electron micrographs of the samples examined and after screening would have helped to clarify this. I would like to point out that degradation is also observed in pneumatic conveying systems, mechanical conveying, and other means of transportations employed by the mineral industry. Reply by M. G. Ayat We gratefully acknowledge Dr. Fern's comments on the subject paper. As he so rightly points out, the degradation process is a real problem, not only in coal slurry pipelines, but also in many handling and processing equipment employed by the coal and mineral industry. Scanning Electron Microscopic examination of samples may offer very little information about the extent of degradation for several reasons. One is that preparing a representative sample that has undergone degradation will be extremely difficult if not impossible. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that SEM requires only very small amounts of material for testing. Secondly, there is a sample preparation step involved in the SEM examination and, as such, it would be very difficult to associate the extent of degradation to either sample preparation or handling and processing operations. Finally, it is probably worth mentioning that degradation is a multi-faceted phenomenon involving many natural and man-made factors. The logical approach to this problem would, therefore, seem to be a "one-step-at-a-time" approach.

INTRODUCTION In the past, the cost and time required for the construction of shafts has played an important part in the planning of underground mines. For reasons that are discussed later, the economics and technology of shaft construction in the future can be expected to play an even greater role in the planning of new mines and the operation of existing mines. Indeed, the very feasibility of a proposed mining venture may depend on the cost and timing of the shaft requirements. The most commonly used shaft sinking methods used today for excavating vertical shafts are discussed and the need for new technology and methods emphasized. In one study by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, it was reported that the coal industry in the United States alone could require 170 to 190 new shafts per year on the basis of doubling current production by the mid 1980's or 70 to 90 shafts on a more moderate coal production expansion program. This study concluded that the attainment of the required number of shafts would be unlikely with the present shaft sinking resources and costs. In order to meet the requirements for shafts in the United States coal and metal mining industries, more efficient and speedier shaft construction methods will be necessary. Current shaft sinking methods are, in the main, labor intensive, and it is noteworthy that it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract the work force required to sink shafts conventionally. "INTRODUCTION “Explosion protection” refers to techniques used to minimize the potential for electrical and electronic equipment to create an ignition while operating in a hazardous location (HAZLOC). In particular, U.S. coal mines are required to use equipment in certain areas of the mine that has been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for use in a methane and coal dust environment to limit the risk of the equipment creating an ignition-capable spark or a thermal energy ignition. In general, MSHA’s regulations for explosion protection recognize two techniques: the use of explosion-proof enclosures (XP boxes) and 2-fault intrinsic safety for electrical and electronic equipment. For 2-fault intrinsically safe (IS) equipment, the U.S. mining industry requirements are unique in that the equipment is certified by MSHA. The criteria MSHA uses to evaluate equipment for intrinsic safety, as required by Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) [30 CFR, Sections18.20(b), 18.68(a)(1), 19.1(b), 20.1(c)(2), 22.6, 23.6, and 27.20(a)], is published in a document referred to as ACRI2001 (1). Outside of U.S. underground mining, many industries and countries accept equipment that is designed to a consensus-based international standard (ANSI/ISA 60079-11 is the U.S. version). The purpose of this study is to provide an overall assessment of the ANSI/ISA 60079-11 standard on 2-fault intrinsic safety and the MSHA ACRI2001 acceptance criteria, and determine if the ANSI/ISA document can be an alternative to ACRI2001 while maintaining an equivalent or better level of safety for miners. There are many drivers for this study. First, immediately after the 2006 MINER Act (2) was passed, there was a perception in the industry that the unique MSHA requirements were contributing to delays or restricting the availability of equipment to meet the requirements of the Act. Additionally, the MINER Act required that mine operators submit an accident response plan for MSHA approval, to be reviewed every six months. MSHA is required to determine if these plans reflect the most recent credible scientific research and make use of currently commercially available technology. There is a concern, as expressed in a recent National Academy of Science (NAS) study (3), that the unique requirements for U.S. mining may be limiting the technologies available to coal miners and technology options for mine operators. Accordingly, the study recommended that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and MSHA re-examine their technology approval and certification processes to ensure they are not deterring innovation, and explore opportunities to cooperate with other international approval organizations to harmonize U.S. and international standards without compromising safety. Lastly, the National Technology Transfer Act (NTTA) and the accompanying Office of Management and Budget’s OMB-119 circular mandate the use of consensus-based standards by federal agencies. However, for U.S. mining operations, MSHA cannot accept such standards unless a determination is made that such standards provide an equivalent level of protection for the miner, per the requirements of the 1977 Mine Act, the 2006 MINER Act, and 30 CFR Part 18 regulations."

Although many notable scientific investigations relating to roof control have been made, roof control still must be considered one of the more baffling problems confronting the miner. Each year contributions are made to our understanding and techniques in dealing with various single phases of the overall problem, however, an equation considering all the variables involved in roof control, if formulated, would indeed be hopelessly complex. Among the factors to be considered is first, gravity which is always acting but which is sometimes less of a problem than lateral forces. There are lateral forces due to expansion, resulting from the weight of overlying rock; to these must be added lateral stresses of orogenic or tectonic orgin, which may be enormous. Stresses due to plastic flow of beds, water pressure, gas pressure, expansion due to absorption of water, faults, joints, fractures, pot heads, and the like may complicate the solution. Therefore, we must base decisions on roof control, and roof bolting in particular, largely on experience, and far too often on few "knowns" and many "unknowns", The development of "in situ" roof trusses may prove of benefit because, they unlike roof bolting, promise positive calculable roof support. These trusses require installation of steel tensioned rods in the roof, which rods are arranged to produce a stress pattern similar to a bridge truss, the roof rock acting to transmit the compression forces. The simplest form of truss (see figure 1) consists merely of two steel rods anchored at the back of holes drilled at an angle of approximately 45° over the pillars, collared near the the middle of the room, the lower ends of the rods being connected together by tierods and turnbuckles. Used in this way, a 3/4" diameter rod can offer greater support than a 10" x 5-3/4" wide flange steel beam. By tightening the turnbuckle, uplist on the roof can be produced,, the downward reaction being transmitted to the pillars by the rods. This simplest form of truss has been used in rooms up to 24' in width. Trusses of four panels, that is, consisting of a truss within a truss, as shown in figure 2, have been used successfully in rooms 30' wide. (figs 2 & 3) It appears a 6 panel truss could be used in a 40, wide room.

"Although global mineral resources are considered to be adequate to meet the needs of a rapidly growing world population, the United States is becoming increasingly dependent on imports. This could have implications for both the economy and national security. The US is a country with a strong tradition of leadership in science and technology. Impressive advances in autonomous underground mining systems reduce the adverse effects of heat and humidity in deep mines and focus renewed attention on ground control. Developments in computing power open opportunities to develop improved understanding of the important role of discontinuities (faults and fracture systems) and more effective design of deep excavations. Establishment of mining R&D Centers at leading US research universities, jointly funded by industry and US federal agencies is recommended as an effective step for the nation to remain an influential partner in world mining. INTRODUCTION. “None of the arts is older than agriculture, but that of metals is no less ancient.. . for no mortal man ever tilled a field without implements. If we remove metals from the service of man, all methods of protecting and sustaining health and more carefully preserving the course of life are done away with.” Agricola (1558)i Homo sapiens, generally acknowledged as the species from which modern Man has evolved, is considered to have originated in Swaziland some 100,000-200,000 years ago. Evidence of use of minerals in that region has been dated to earlier than 40,000 BC.ii Today, a large fraction of the elements of the Periodic Table are derived from minerals, and finding new applications in development of innovative technologies. Agricola’s comments are as applicable today as ever.iii Metals such as copper, tin, lead, iron and aluminum were mined and smelted several thousands of years BC. It was not until the Industrial Revolution, started in the latter half of the 17th Century in Northern England, where coal was available as an energy source, and iron as the basis for fabricating machinery, that dramatic change to society began to occur. Human toil was replaced by far more powerful machines. Rural communities migrated to work in factories in urban areas. Rapid transportation over long distances became possible, leading eventually to the world of today. The change spread to other parts of the world, bringing wealth and power. Although now well established in some regions, the Revolution has still to arrive in many other parts of the world. This can be seen in Figure 1, which shows the relative wealth, or ‘Standard of Living’ as measured by the GDP/capita, of regions around the world. Regions such as North America, Europe, and Australasia iv are seen to have the highest standard. Thanks to today’s global communications systems, regions with relatively low GDP/capita are well aware of ‘how others live’ – and eager to emulate them."

Small-scale flotation tests have been conducted to examine the effect of froth stability on the column flotation of finely pulverized coal. The results of this study demonstrate that the upgrading of coal in a column flotation cell can be significantly improved when froth stability is properly controlled through the manipulation of appropriate operating variables. Several important correlations have been established from the test data. These relationships should prove useful for the design and ore ration of column flotation cells for fine coal processing.

A new system for leaching many types of ores has recently been developed on a commercial basis by J and J Research and Development, Inc. of Hanover, New Mexico. This revolutionary new leaching system consists principally of three new leaching reactors; viz, (1) a large, air-agitates, column-like reactor for leaching crushed ores that is constructed in an underground environment and has the inherent ability to do a very efficient job of leaching, (2) a vat-like, air-agitated vessel for leaching an rinsing finely ground ores and , (3) an air-agitated copper precipitation column that is built underground and utilizes an inexpensive dense or heavy scrap iron as a copper precipitant. Each of these new reactors have been used in a large leaching plant near Hanover, New Mexico.

A novel two-stage froth flotation process to remove pyritic sulfur from fine- size coal is described. The process consists of a first-stage, standard coal flotation step in which high-ash refuse and some of the pyrite are removed as tailings. The first-stage clean coal froth concentrate is then repulped in fresh water, and a coal depressant, a pyrite collector, and a frother are added to float the remaining pyritic material. Laboratory and pilot plant flotation results with coals from the Lower Freeport and Pittsburgh beds are given. The pilot plant test results show that up to 80 percent pyritic sulfur reduction was achieved with the Lower Freeport bed coal and up to 50 percent with the Pittsburgh bed coal. Laboratory and pilot plant results were in excellent agreement, indicating that the process is a viable means of removing much of the sulfur from some coals.

In 1939 the Geological Society of America published a summary of the geology of the ore deposits of the Mississippi Valley region, This volume, edited by E. S. Bastin, contained contributions from the foremost students of the area which described theregionalgeologic setting of the various deposits as wel as the detailed geology as then known. The various ideas as to the origin of the ores were discussed with the general, though not unanimous, conclusion that the deposits were hydrothermal products, Only those deposits in the immediate Mississippi Valley area were considered without any attempt to introduce evidence from other districts generally accepted as being of the "Mississippi Valley type." Since 1939, much new information has come from extended studies of two of the important districts described in the 1939 report andimportant extensions of the known ore have been found. Likewise, concentrated geologic efforts have been fruitful in severa "Mississippi Valley type" districts - both U. S. andforeign - not treated in the 939 paper. The wealth of new field information on the structural and stratigraphic relations of this interesting ore type, coupled with the results of theoretical and laboratory studies of the past 18 years, makes desirable a review of our present knowledge and interpretation of these important deposits which for many years have yielded over 20 percent of the world's annual production of lead and zinc, together with large amounts of fluorspar and barite. No restatement of the details of the geologic evidence willbe attempted here; the interested student is referred to the papers cited. Slide No. 1 shows the distribution around the world of the deposits under consideration. A principal thesis of my remarks is that there is so much similarity in all these deposits that it seems necessary for all of them to have had a similar mode of origin, whatever that may be. Variations in the shape, size and mineralogy of the orebodies give each district some individuality, but there are enough of the "typical" characteristics present in all cases to make classification in the "Mississippi Valley type" agreeableto most geologists. Thus the overall process giving rise to the ore solutions surely was the same for all in the group. Either they all have igneous affiliations or they all do not. Acknowledgment of this kinship between deposits in the various districts offers many advantages in trying to arrive at a decision as to just what the origin may have been, for the amount of guiding and limiting evidence which must fit into the hypothesis is greatly increased over that available in any one district, To a certain extent this was recognized by the authors of Special Paper 24 in treating all of the immediate Mississippi Valley areas together; by expanding the consideration to include ore deposits of this type all over the world the changes of success, i.e., arriving at the correct answer, are improved several fold. Since most of these districts are quite simple structurally, a number of hypotheses might fit the facts in any one of them, but if the facts to be met can safely be drawn from all the districts, then the explanations which will fit all the data are much less numerous. One purpose of this paper is to call attention to the field facts that have been reported from the .various areas which seem to have an important bearing on the kind of ore fluid that was responsible for the ore and on the way it circulated.

Diesel powered equipment has been operated in underground coal for more than 50 years. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), there are approximately 3,000 diesel units operating in underground coal mines in the United States. This number is expected to reach 5,000 diesel units in 250 coal mines by the year 2000. Also, there are approximately 5,000 diesel units operating in metal/nonmetal mines such as trona, potash and salt mines: and more than 3,000 diesel units operating in Canada. This increased popularity of diesel powered equipment over trolley wire, electric trailing cable or battery powered equipment is because of improved safety, greater mobility, higher productivity and increased power of diesel equipment.

Dump leaching and ,in-situ solution mining have received considerable attention during the past few years due to their apparent economic viability and minimal environmental impact. Solution mining actually dates back to the 17th century when leaching of copper ore was first reported. However-, modern day leaching didn't begin on a wide scale until the mid-1900's. In-situ mining for copper, nickel, salts, and oil shale is currently looking more attractive as the technology advances. Presently, about 15 percent of the copper production in the United States is from leaching operations at approximately 14 active sites, the largest of which are the waste dumps near the Bingham Copper Mine, Utah. To establish a common background, the discussion is centered around state-of-the-art conditions. For dump leaching, complications inherent to the physical conditions and chemical reactions such as channeling, porosity and permeability, sorption, air flow, rock alteration and pH control are discussed. Emphasis is made on those conditions which render solution recovery rates and solution mineral concentrations unpredictable. By illustrating typical and actual field conditions, the generally accepted flow theories for both dump leaching and in-situ solution mining, including rubblization, are presented. For in-situ mining, hydrogeologic techniques such as geophysical well logging, aquifer testing and digital computer modeling are also discussed. The importance of artificial fracturing and well stimulating to solution injection and recovery is made with regard to project development. ABSTRACT Leadership is a critical component to an organization’s safety culture and influences the ways that health and safety is enacted on site. Therefore, it is not surprising that improving leadership will also improve safety. Worker perceptions of management practices are shaped through unique leader-employee interactions over time. However, few details are known about the communicative support (i.e., emotional, informational, and tangible) offered by supervisors and its impact on miners’ perceptions and performance. Using pre and post-interview data with 20 supervisors and 48 workers during six-week interventions, researchers identified positive and negative instances of supervisor support and its implications on worker performance. This paper highlights the common support tactics offered by supervisors and desired by workers to help practitioners identify ways to improve their safety culture and subsequently, the proactivity and compliance of their workforce. INTRODUCTION Supervisory leadership is a critical component to the effective implementation of an organization’s health and safety management system (HSMS). Specifically, supervisors serve as representatives of an organization and their actions are indicative of the organization’s safety culture (Eisenberger et al. 1986). Senior management has been shown to serve as a frame of reference for guiding safe behaviors in the workplace (Mearns et al. 1998) and, more recently, research has related supervisory enforcement to workers’ safety compliance (Petitta et al., 2017). Therefore, it is not surprising that by improving leadership, perceptions of management and subsequent safety outcomes are likely to improve as well (Zohar, 2002). Perceptions of management are shaped through unique leader-employee interactions over a period of time (Hofmann and Morgeson, 2004, 1999). How these unique interactions impact worker performance, however, remains unexamined. As a result, understanding how supervisor-employee relationships operate in high-risk environments is unclear (Mirza and Isha, 2017; Denis et al., 2010). A starting point to better recognize the idiosyncrasies of these relationships is by way of examining the communicative support offered by front-line management and received by industry workers. To this end, this paper uses pre- and post-interview data to study the communicative aspects of supervisor-employee interactions at mine sites. The analysis uses a social support framework to identify positive and negative instances of supportive communication. From interview data with 20 managers and 48 mineworkers, data emerged that shows how supervisors’ unique types of support contribute to workers’ perceptions, motivation, and follow-through of safe work behavior.

Power plants that utilize conventional wet flue-gas desulfurization methods produce enormous amounts of flue-gas scrubber sludge. A typical 400 MW power station that burns a high sulfur coal produces 170,000 tons of wet flue-gas scrubber sludge per year. This scrubber sludge is currently landfilled at an enormous cost to utility companies. This material could be used as a raw material for industries that use gypsum, such as the wallboard and plaster industries. However, before it can be used as feedstock for these industries, some of the impurities such as unreacted limestone and silicates must be removed from the scrubber sludge. Froth flotation has tremendous potential for separating these impurities from scrubber sludge. In order to select an optimum flotation process, it is necessary to characterize the surface properties of the major components in the scrubber sludge, which consist of calcium sulfite, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate (limestone), and silica. In this study zeta potential measurements were used to determine the surface charge of the components in scrubber sludge, with the goal of optimizing a froth flotation process to produce a marketable gypsum product for the wallboard and plaster industries.

"The Multiple Blasthole Fragmentation (MBF) model models multiple explosive charge contributions and the effect on fragmentation of delay timing with its associated scatter for each blasthole. The model uses near-field blast vibration attenuation parameters and the ground p-wave velocity as inputs for part of the in situ rock property to model rock fragmentation. It models most blast design parameters explicitly and simulates the effect of wave reinforcement due to the interaction of simultaneously arriving waves or diminishing cooperative contribution from long delay intervals between charges within a blasthole or among blastholes. The fragmentation size is calculated at three-dimensional grid points within a blast, and the fines and oversized blocks are treated explicitly. The model takes a surveyed irregular geometry of the free face of a blast as the calculation boundary.This paper presents a case study on applying the MBF model at an openpit mine. Near-field vibration measurements from signature hole blasts were conducted to obtain the stress-wave magnitude and attenuation parameters as well as ground sonic velocity. A production blast was then monitored with the corresponding fragmentation measured, serving as site-specific inputs to the MBF model. Various blast design scenarios were then simulated to develop ones that provide better fragmentation to improve mill throughput for the mine. IntroductionThe semiempirical fragmentation models currently found in the literature (Cunningham, 1987; Lownds, 1995) cannot explicitly model contributions from multiple blastholes with varying delay intervals. Most of these models are not three-dimensional. Furthermore, these models predict an average fragmentation size within a volume surrounding a blasthole and use the average size to generate a size distribution over the volume. The percentage of fines and oversize blocks is included in the distribution. Typically, such models are inadequate for predicting fines and oversize blocks (Cunningham, 1987)."

The interaction of Bacillus polymyxa and minerals such as hematite, corundum and quartz resulted in significant surface chemical changes, both on the cell surfaces and on the interacted oxide minerals. After such treatment, quartz was rendered relatively more hydrophobic, while hematite and corundum were rendered more hydrophilic. Biopretreatment was observed to be beneficial in the separation of silica from hematite and alumina by both selective flocculation and flotation. The possible role of bacterial adhesion and metabilites in the biobeneficiation process is illustrated.

This paper is an attempt to illustrate the potentiality of ANN applied to mineral processing. An introduction to the technology of ANN is first proposed to describe the various components and to explain the various phases encountered in setting up a network. Then examples are given to illustrate the use of ANN dynamic modelling of mineral processing units or plants and in process control.

To evaluate intelligently and to market a source of rare earth raw material, it is necessary that the producer understand the requirements of the processor and the manner in which these requirements effect the value and salability of his product. This paper will be an attempt to aid in such an understanding. The majority of rare earth processors are primarily chemical companies, not mining or metallurgical companies, as the complexities of the processing procedures are' much more chemical in nature than metallurgical. The rare earths and the rare earth industry are normally divided into two groups - the ?light? or cerium group and the ?heavy? or yttrium group. They are so named because cerium and yttrium are the most common elements in 'heir respective groups and are so divided on the basis of mineralogical and chemical characteristics. The dividing line of the two groups is not rigidly fixed but usually is considered as being between samarium (atomic number 62) and europium (atomic number 63). Although the two groups are quite similar, processing procedures differ significantly, hence most processors tend to specialize in one group or the other. There is, however, a growing tendency toward participation in both groups.
