"The data from EPB cells located inside the pressurized chamber of EPB TBMs and also the data from the pressure sensors in grout lines are quite important in controlling the EPB operation. However, there have always been questions in regards to pressure distribution along the shield body. Could the pressure distribution data be used to come up with potential locations for ground loss? Does the overcut region, the space between the shield body and the maximum cut diameter, consist of broken material or EPB muck, or does that region consist primarily of void space? During free air interventions, how does pressure distribute along the TBM body? To address these questions, one of the two EPB TBMs used in the Northgate Link Light Rail project in Seattle, WA is equipped with EPB cells in front and rear body to monitor the pressure distribution along the TBM body in addition to the standard 6 EPB cells located inside the cutterhead chamber and pressure sensors located at the grout lines. This paper discusses the results of this study and weighs on the valuable data that can be collected by using the shield pressure sensors.INTRODUCTIONThe cutterhead of the TBM is normally equipped with overcutters on the cutterhead periphery which extend into the annular space beyond the diameter of the TBM shield. Thus, the overcutters serve to disturb and excavate some of the ground in the annular space which reduces friction and resistance around the TBM body. This phenomenon is necessary to help the TBM steer and navigate around curves. Additionally, the shield of an EPB TBM is also often shaped like a cone, with the diameter decreasing from the front to the tail shield. This conical shape also helps the TBM to navigate because material that is cut by the cutterhead either gets pulled into the cutterhead or it gets pushed out of the way – around the cutterhead and into the annular space. In EPB tunneling, the conditioned material from the face that does not get pulled into the cutterhead mixing chamber flows into the shield gap and pressurizes the surrounding ground. Additionally, grout can travel from the segment annulus into the shield gap. The pressure in the shield gap mainly depends on the pressure of the material at the face and the grouting pressure behind the tail shield."

He must strive to produce a salable product in an environmentally acceptable process while continuously Improving the profit margln.(1,2) Metal prices fluctuate on a regular basis. They directly Impact revenue and hence operating philosophy. The mineral engineer needs to develop an optimum operating strategy to meet his overall objectives, One would expect that, In the modem era of complex computer models, it would be easy to develop an economic model to maximize profits and/or cash flow. Discussions with mill managers Indicate that one mine/corporation's optimum operating strategy is not necessarily optimum for another. This paper approaches the problems from basics "Economics 101" and Illustrates the complexity of developing a universal model which can be applicable to all mines. Case examples are used to illustrate the need for better communication to avoid the basic economic fallacy “that optimization of segments leads to optimization of the whole system.” TECHNICAL MODELS Technical models are a prerequisite to the development of economic models because they provide the necessary Input data to these models, The flow of material from a mine through the sale of the finished product is shown In Figure 1. The ore Is mined and milled, and the concentrate can be stored for sale or smelted and refined In-house or at a toll facility. The finished product(s) are held In Inventory until sold either through existing contracts or in the spot market. [ ] Fairly reliable technical models have been developed for mining, milling and smelter operations. Mine plans are developed to provide a good Indication of the relationship between production and cut-off grade. It is easier to change surface mine plans than plans for underground mines. However, there are limits to maximum production that can be achieved with existing equipment. It Is possible that mine benches may not be developed to handle additional equipment, even If It was purchased to enhance production. More often than not, the cut-off grade Is lowered to Increase throughput goals.

"Recent government initiatives and commercial activities have targeted asteroids for in-situ characterization, manipulation, and possible resource extraction. Though emergent technologies may be effective for such undertakings, uncertainties remain concerning the effects a space environment may have on the mechanical behavior of rocks. Various non-destructive rock characterization techniques can empirically predict in-situ rock strength on Earth; however, these techniques must be adapted to account for unique space conditions. In order to mimic one element of a space environment, various rock samples were evaluated after prolonged exposure to low temperatures ranging from -75°C to 0°C. Tests included uniaxial compressive strength, Schmidt hammer, and ultrasonic pulse velocity, while rock types included shale, limestone, and chalk. This data was used to generate a temperature correction for the non-destructive methods and evaluate the accuracy of these methods in predicting strength values. Overall, these results provide insight on the mechanical behavior of rocks at low temperatures and may be used to design robust systems needed for asteroid rock characterization INTRODUCTION NASA and various commercial entities have recently targeted near-Earth asteroids for exploration and scientific investigation to better understand their in-situ properties, mechanical characteristics, and formative processes. In particular, NASA’s Asteroid Initiative encompasses several studies and mission plans that will enable future investigations while vetting technologies that can be applied to deep space exploration. One component of the Asteroid Initiative is the Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM). This multi-stage space mission proposes to rendezvous a robotic spacecraft with a large near-Earth asteroid. Upon approach and after landing, the spacecraft will prospect the surface and identify a multi-ton boulder (up to 5 m in its largest dimension) suitable for capture. The robotic spacecraft will engage the boulder, remove it from the parent asteroid, and return the sample to a controlled lunar orbit. Once the asteroid mass is in stable orbit around the moon, astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft will engage with the retrieved asteroid for manned exploration that will include sample collection and geologic prospecting. Launch plans for the ARM robotic craft are expected as early as 2020, and manned explorations of the asteroid mass in lunar orbit are expected to follow sometime in the mid-2020s (NASA, 2015). Overall this mission will demonstrate NASA’s ability to intersect, manipulate, and redirect an extraterrestrial body, while supplying scientific information that is relevant for planetary defense and in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) applications."

"TBMs have been used in mining in decades past, but their use has been limited and sporadic, due to both perceived and actual application difficulties. With new technology and mounting success stories, this is changing. For both coal and metals mining, deep ore bodies require long access tunnels, and an efficient and economical method of reaching those deposits. Today, mining engineers are considering TBMs as part of the overall mine development plan. Planned TBM mine drifts are not only longer, but have more complicated trajectories. Mine development TBMs will have to cope with varying geology, potential for high water inflows, steep gradients, and high temperatures. TBM systems are being planned to cope with such difficulties. TBM systems will be considered and increasingly deployed for mine development, even if commodity prices remain low. TBMs can satisfy the need for increased productivity, better life of mine infrastructure, and safety. Effective conveyor systems are essential to support TBM operation in many mining applications. Many mine development tunnels are slopes, driven down at the steepest practical gradient to reach the deep ore body. Conveyors are often the only safe and effective way to haul the TBM muck form such tunnels. This paper will review the historical use of TBMs in mining, and will discuss the 2015 status of TBMs and conveyor systems in mining, and the special requirements and adaptable features needed in order to make efficient TBMs a reality in mines worldwide.HISTORICAL USE OF TBMS IN MINING APPLICATIONS The first successful hard rock TBM was invented in 1954. As a factory-like method, sublevel caving consists of development activities, stockpiling and production activities that are carried out on different levels independently. Therefore, considering the operation from the development phase to the plant will lead to more reliable production scheduling. This paper presents a mixed integer linear programming framework for the long-term production scheduling of sublevel caving that maximizes the net present value while satisfying development activities, mining, and processing capacities, continuous mining, the allowable number of active mining units, grade blending, and vertical and horizontal sequencing. The model is coded in Jupyter Notebook and is solved using the CPLEX solver.

The implementation of NAFTA in January of 1994 was expected to have small but beneficial effects for the Mexican economy, mostly through increased investment flows. Mexico's mining industry was especially likely to benefit, as mineral investment funds would be diverted to the now safer Mexico and away from similarly endowed but more risky Latin American mineral economies. The results of the past two years have shown that it is governments and macroeconomic factors that influence investment flows, rather than the fine-tuning of trade flows through so called "free-trade" agreements.

In 1992, United States mine production of barite decreased 8.5%. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 36.9% and imports decreased by 61.6% vs. 1991. World mine production decreased 1.5%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, decreased 11.9% according to the Bureau. The declared value, c.i.f. United States port, of all imported crude barite during 1992 decreased from $42.35/t ($38.42/st) in 1991 to $40.09/t ($36.37/st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 88% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 80% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Ten¬nessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This included barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1992. The average number of rotary rigs operating (717) was 16.6% less than the 1991 average of 860 in the United States. Crude barite imports were 518 kt (571,000 st), 61.6% less than in 1991. Imports accounted for 44.7% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the United States. During the year, China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the United States with 67.2% of total crude ore imports. India followed with 31 %, and others with 1.8%. Originated and developed in the civil tunneling industry, the Ground Reaction Curve (GRC) has provided a robust methodology for evaluating and designing ground support in both tunnels and underground mining scenarios. This paper presents a preliminary assessment in the utilization of the GRC concept for the evaluation and design of the pillar-support system with respect to overburden stress and displacement. This initial assessment will be based on and backed by past research on this topic. Underground mine instrumentation is planned for a longwall mine in the Appalachian coal field based on the research and findings in this paper to support the postulated hypothesis. INTRODUCTION Since the early 1970’s, the mining industry has evaluated the structural stability of a pillar by dividing an approximated pillar load by an approximated pillar strength. While this design methodology has served the industry well in the past, as modern mining operations continue to develop in more complex geological and geometric conditions coupled with market economics, industry professionals are in dire need of a modified stability assessment approach which considers both the stress condition and material displacements. Within the civil tunneling industry, the GRC approach has been successfully utilized in designing underground support measures that enhance the stability of an underground excavation. Through the incorporation of current industry knowledge and understanding of ground and support behaviors this paper looks to investigate into preliminary assessment for the development of a Modified Support Response Method (MSRM) to further improve the analysis of local and global underground stability. CURRENT PILLAR DESIGN METHODS AND THEIR LIMITATIONS Globally, multiple pillar design methods have been utilized in the design of underground excavations. Each of these methods approaches the calculation of pillar stability a little differently with respect to material properties, underground geometries and stress conditions. Analytical solutions can be used to determine the strength of homogeneous materials like concrete, but not in case of non-homogeneous and non-isotropic mineral deposits in a mine. These equations are often derived using empirical methods. Pillar strength is defined as the maximum resistance of a pillar to axial loading (Brady & Brown, 1985). The strength of mine pillars is typically estimated through indirect methods. In the past, researchers have correlated the strength of a given size and width of a rock specimen to the strength of a mine pillar. The first study on the effect of geometry on rock strength was done by (Bauschiger, 1876) on Swiss sandstone samples. Since then several empirical equations to determine pillar strength had been published by many researchers like (Bunting, 1911), (Griffith & Conner, 1912), (Greenwald, Howarth, & Hartmann, 1939), (Holland & Gaddy, 1957), (Evana, Pomeroy, & Berenbaum, 1961) and (Holland C. , 1964).

INTRODUCTION The principle line of the Caracas Metro is located generally along the most important east-west traffic corridor of the city from the yards and shops in Propatria at the western extremity to Petare, and eventually beyond to Palo Verde at the eastern end, a route distance of 21 kilometers. There will be 23 stations along the alignment, underground, at grade and elevated, and the line is forecast to handle 1,209,100 passengers daily by the year 2000 with a travel time of 29 minutes between Propatria and Petare. This principle line was divided into three sections for design purposes: Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas, Section I, Fuerzas Armadas-Chacaito, Section II and Chacaito-Petare, Section III. These sections were further subdivided into subsections for construction purposes. The Venezuelan Government, through its Caracas Metro Office in the Ministry of Public Works, awarded design contracts in sections to PARSONS BRINCKERHOFF-TUDOR-BECHTEL for Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas, Section I, OCOIDESA-GRID-APM for Fuerzas Armadas-Chacaito, Section II and OCOIDESA GRID-APM for Chacaito-Petare, Section III. Construction contracts were awarded by international bidding and work is now underway, by joint venture organizations of Venezuelan and foreign firms. The first two sections are under the administration of a company of Engineer/Inspectors in each section. The construction supervision of contracts in the first section is under the administration of the Venezuelan firm, Gómez-Celis-Herrera, (GCH) Engineers, acting under contract to the new C.A. Metro de Caracas that replaced ' the former Office of the Metro. The Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas section, approximately seven kilometers long, consists in part of the 2,951 linear meters of twin-bore

The underground voids that result from mining provide opportunities for deep geologic waste disposal (DGWD). Such disposal could solve many environmental problems. DGWD takes careful planning, technology transfer and true partnership between waste generators and mine/repository operators. The US government is now planning on using specially mined excavations to dispose of radiotoxic and mixed waste. Using the experience gained from the domestic projects that are now in preparation and from foreign repositories that are now in operation, US mines can claim their rightful share of the growing market for DGWD.

On February 5, 1973, Eastern Associated Coal Corp began shortwall mining in their Federal No. 1 Mine, thus marking the first attempt in the United States at modern shortwall mining, i.e., using a continuous miner to extract coal open-ended from pillars 100 to 200 feet wide, under the protection of a self¬-advancing roof support system (1)1/. Since then, four additional shortwall faces have been operated. While the number of face-years of shortwall experience in the United States is limited, this experience has been anything but uniform. Differences in operator motivation, coalbed parameters, geologic conditions, panel dimensions, and face equipment all have contributed to a wealth of knowledge which can provide guidance for the design of future shortwalls. The purpose of this paper is to review the history of shortwall mining in the United States and to assess its value to the U.S. coal industry in terms of the health and safety of the miner, the percentage of coal recovered, coal production, worker productivity, and relative cost performance.

A decanter centrifuge of novel design was developed for the dewatering of fine-solids slurries having micrometer-range particles that form pastelike, flowable, hard-to-dewater cakes. The design combines a compound beach with a cake flow control structure that allows expressed liquid, from the cake in the dry beach region to be returned to the liquid pool while maintaining a high-solids throughput. To provide optimal performance with various operating parameters (i.e., feed rate, centrifugal gravity, pool, differential speed, concentration of feed solids and slurry type), the cake flow control is adjustable. The second part of the beach is preferably at a zero angle. Tests showed that the new design allows increases in solids dryness and solids throughput. The mushroom-shaped Minghu power cavern located in central Taiwan is 21.2 m (W) by 40.5 m (H) by 127.2 m (L) and is designed to house 4 units of power generating-pumping equipment with a total capacity of 1,000 MW. This paper presents an introduction to the geological conditions at the cavern site; the rock mechanical tests undertaken; the design approach adopted; the construction method and sequence followed; and the instrumentation provided in the roof arch to monitor the behavior of the surrounding rocks. The measured data collected from the embedded instruments will be compared with those obtained from theoretical analyses and presented in this paper. Several technical problems encountered during the construction stage are covered and the solutions of these problems are also described therein.

Providing adequate airflow to effectively dilute and remove diesel pollutants in large mine working headings is a little researched area. A simulated diesel mucking operation was carried out in the Exxon Colony Pilot Mine in Colorado to establish expected levels of diesel pollutants in dead-ended working headings. This heading was nominally 15.3 m (50-ft) wide by 9.2 m (30-ft) high. Two face ventilation systems were tested using sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas to represent the diesel pollutants. The results of these tests showed that conventional face ventilation systems operating at high flow rates could adequately ventilate diesel equipment in the 447-522 kw (600-700 hp) range, even in a dead heading 91.4 m (300 ft) in length.

Applied statistics provides scores of powerful tests and techniques that are widely used and abused in science and engineering. The variance is the basic measure for variability, precision and risk. The formulas for the variances of the arithmetic mean and the weighted average are derived from the variance of a general function, as defined in probability theory. The requirement of functional or mathematical independence in probability theory translates into the concept of degrees of freedom in applied statistics. Geostatistics is the only variant of statistics in which functional dependence and degrees of freedom are irrelevant. This paper examines whether such basic elements of probability and statistics can be ignored with impunity.

The Kidston gold discoveries were originally made about 1907, and by 1934, 1.76 Mg (62,000 oz) of gold had been produced from placer and lode mining of higher grade, most¬ly oxidized gold ore. As mining in the lode ore penetrated deeper, costs increased and the world gold price stagnated. The lode or underground production averaged close to 6.9 g/t (0.2 oz per ton) Au for the 201 kt mined. No mining or development took place from 1934 until 1965. Kidston's high grade ores were exhausted by 1934. From 1965 to 1976, exploration had developed 3 Mt of about 3 g/t (0.88 oz per ton) Au. Placer Pacific acquired rights to the property in 1976 and began a geologic and engineering study of the district. It was clear that the deposit had the potential for becom¬ing a large-tonnage, low-grade producer. However, explora¬tion had to discover the tonnage and grade and engineering needed to solve the obstacles of production costs. Bulk material handling problems were addressed by Placer's wide experience in open pit mining, and the increase in work index accompanying deeper ores was handled by Placer's metallurgists. The matter of power for the operation was solved by engineering studies. These showed that power could be generated and brought in economically. The price of gold also increased after 1976, and this helped in the economic analysis. The Kidston discovery since 1976 is really a combination of good exploration geology and careful engineering plan¬ning that overcame the obstacles presented by ore characteris¬tics and the location of the deposit. The Tennohji-Benten Giant Trunk Sewer Project has been under construction since 1974 in the eastern part of Osaka, the second largest city in Japan. The entire project is divided into 7 blocks, some of which have already been completed. This 8.8-km sewer tunnel, being driven through a densely populated area, was planned to be constructed by the shield tunneling method. This paper described shield tunneling performances and ground behaviors during the construction of Blocks 2 and 3. An earth pressure shield (dia., 6,750 mm) was employed in Block 3 tunneling. The ground was generally soft and the cover over the tunnel varied from 13 m to only 4.5 m, so that a considerable amount of chemicals was injected to stabilize the ground. A hand-digging type shield (dia., 7,250 mm) was used in Block 2 tunneling under compressed air. For 85 m of the total length of 1.6 km, the soil at the face was extremely soft, and therefore, the ground freezing method was additionally employed.

Personnel at Utah Copper Division's Bingham Canyon Mine use current computing technology to compile pertinent production statistics and mining plans. Within hours after the day's work has been completed, concise reports summarizing the previous day's production statistics, actual production vs. budget statistics, the location of shovels relevant to the mining plan, the performance of equipment, equipment next scheduled for maintenance, etc. are available at the terminals located throughout the mine. Also, engineering personnel us e computerized systems, directly from their offices, to assist them in the timely development of mining plans. Timely and concise reporting and planning capabilities such as these assist mine personnel in their efforts to review mining progress and equipment performance, and as such they are in a better position to detect adverse trends early and to seek appropriate resources or make changes in plans or practices.

It is a great pleasure for me to speak-before such a prestigious group as the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. The substance of my talk today is the handling of coal and petroleum coke: their characteristics and environmental problems, and how we were able to correct the problems, prescribe the cure and enjoy the benefits. When coke first became a by-product derived from the oil refineries everyone would have been very happy if someone had offered to take this pro- duct off their hands. Unfortunately, there was no market at that time, and no one seemed interested. Soon thereafter, it became a sellable product and began to be shipped to many countries in the world. This was when all of the pollution problems began. I will be talking briefly about some of these problems and showing a short film on this subject afterwards.
