Fluid flow phenomena and therefore the flotation efficiency of air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation are strongly dependent on operating and design variables such as air and slurry flow rates, underflow and overflow opening areas, percent solids of the feed, reagent levels, particle size and ASH length. Time-averaged multiphase flow characteristics, as determined by X-ray CT (described in a previous publication), are used to understand and explain the steady-state ASH flotation of quartz. A detailed parametric study of quartz flotation by a nominal 2in. diam. air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH-2C) revealed the influence of these variables on the flotation response, which is discussed in terms of the multiphase flow characteristics. Thus, a phenomenological description of quartz flotation has been established to assist in the further development and utilization of the ASH technology.

Quantitative analysis of Platinum Group Metals from ore samples and industrial materials using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS), Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES), Atomic Absorption Spectrometer(AAS), and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) techniques was conducted and the performance of various techniques was compared. The effects of different matrices in the sample materials were compared and discussed for each analytical technique. The ICP-AES technique exhibited better accuracy than AAS but showed limitations in its application due to strong spectral interference in the presence of common matrix elements such as iron. The ICP-MS showed the lowest detection limit and less spectral interferences than the previous two techniques. The XRF technique was also applied to examine the total amount of PGM from industrial materials. Results from each analytical method on various sources were presented and discussed.

The effect of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, realgar and arsenopyrite on gold dissolution in cyanide media was investigated. The cyanidation of synthetic gold ores in the presence of various concentrations of sulfides was studied under constant experimental conditions. A mineralogical analysis of the minerals was performed. The leaching kinetics were determined. The negative effect of sulfides on the gold dissolution rate varies with the sulfide mineral and decreases according to the following order: realgar > pyrrhotite > chalcopyrite > pyrite > arsenopyrite. The chemical characterization of gold and sulfide minerals surfaces using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was undertaken to identify the mechanisms involved. XPS analysis showed that a passivation layer of sulfides, arsenic or iron compounds might form on the gold surface as a result of the dissolution of the sulfide minerals. A column flotation system was designed to conduct release analyses on a very finely disseminated, stratiform copper ore from the Denali Copper Prospect in Alaska. Chalcopyrite is finely disseminated in a carbonate matrix, and pyrite is disseminated in both the chalcopyrite and the gangue. Grinding to -20 µm is required for adequate liberation. A 25-mm x 2.4-m glass flotation column was designed. The ore and its flotation tailings were repeatedly floated to obtain a rougher concentrate. The rougher concentrate was then repeatedly floated to produce release fractions. These fractions were analyzed for copper, iron, calcium and magnesium, and release curves were plotted. The procedure was replicated at each of two grinds, i.e., 99% and 88% passing 37 µm (400 mesh). The procedure should find application for flotation characterization and process selection. Bond grindability testing was also conducted.

Sodium silicate (water glass) is a modifier reagent widely used in flotation with the function of a depressant or dispersant. The interaction between sodium silicate and mineral surfaces is still not well understood. This investigation aimed to illuminate the sodium silicate action mechanism as a depressant in the flotation of the minerals quartz and calcite. The experiments were done with high-purity mineral samples in the particle size range below 147 µm. The microflotation tests in a modified Hallimond tube showed that, in all systems tested, the efficiency of sodium silicate increased with the concentration. At concentrations above 1,500 g/t, almost total depression (96% for calcite and 97% for quartz) was achieved. The variation of sodium silicate modulus did not alter the quartz flotation performance in the presence of amine (150 g/t). The most efficient depression pH range was observed between 5 and 8. Above pH 10, the depressant action of sodium silicate was negligible. The infrared spectra obtained at pH 7 after silicate contact showed the presence of the groups OH and Si-OH, both suggesting that the adsorption of the neutral species Si(OH)4, as well as siloxane groups (Si-O-Si), attributed to adsorption of polymeric species. Sharing electron pairs is the proposed adsorption mechanism between Si(OH)4 and polymeric species and the surface sites (Si-O on quartz and Ca-O on calcite). At pH 11, the electrostatic repulsion prevents the species adsorption, impairing the sodium silicate action.

Automatic control of fine coal cleaning circuits has traditionally been limited by a lack of sensors. Although several nuclear-based analyzers are available, none have seen widespread acceptance. In this investigation, image analysis is used for on-line determination of ash content in fine coal slurries. The ash content of a flotation tailings stream is correlated to the mean gray level of the slurry. Based on a 90% prediction interval, an analysis of sensor performance indicates an accuracy of 73 ± 4% ash over a range from 65-90% ash. While this result is comparable to existing nuclear-based analyzers, the video-based system is only a fraction of the cost. The sensor is currently installed at the Middle Fork preparation plant owned by Pittston Coal Company.

Real growth in the economy, increasing demand for electricity, and consumer stockpiling for a possible United Mineworkers of America (UMW) strike in October made 1984 a banner year for coal. Production and consumption climbed to record heights. Precautionary purchases brought inventories close to the peak levels of early 1981 when coal miners walked out for 72 days. Production slowed in the fourth quarter after labor and management concluded negotiations without a walkout. But output in every major coal producing state showed significant gains during the year US coal production totaled 807 Mt (890 million st) in 1984. This is a 13.8% increase over 1983 output. Lower production rates, principally in Appalachia, and sustained demand in the final quarter put downward pressure on coal stocks by the end of the year. Demand All market sectors experienced greater requirements for coal in 1984. Electric utility coal consumption increased 6.3%; exports climbed 4.8%; coke plants consumed 18.9% more coal; coal requirements in the other industrial sector expanded by 11.8%; and consumption in the residential/commercial sector rose 8.1%. Domestic consumption of coal reached a record 718 Mt (791 million st) in 1984. This is a 7.4% gain over the previous consumption high of 668 Mt (737 million st) in 1983. Electric Utilities The 4.6% increase in electric power generation in 1984 was coupled with expanding coal use relative to other energy sources. This resulted in a 6.3% rise in coal consumption, totaling 603 Mt (664 million st) for the year. In the mid 60's Prochem & Hydrochem Development, it's research division, developed the high efficiency Maxflo impeller. Since the Maxflo impeller had a design that had proven to be very efficient in gas-liquid-solid contacting, it was a natural extension to apply this design to flotation & the research commenced in the mid 80's. An opportunity to test the energy savings occurred at Dickenson Mines in 1987, & comparative results with existing conventional flotation cells showed a marked increase in capacity, grade & recovery with 25% less power applied. This r success was followed by the installation of the fist agitated Flotation Colunm (5ft. dia. x 25ft. tall). In March of 1994, Dynatec Mining Limited entered into a contract with PCL Civil Constructors to carry out the underground excavations for the Algonquin Power Corporation’s15 Megawatt Nagagami hydro-electric power station located near Hearst, Ontario, Canada. Dynatec completed the work for this project in early October 1995. Dynatec Mining Limited’s work included the excavation of a 175 meter long penstock driven at a grade of -25% to a 4000 m3 powerhouse located 50 meters below the intake elevation. A 1200 meter long tailrace was driven from the Nagagami River to connect with the powerhouse. Two 50 meter raises were driven from the powerhouse to surface to pro-vide access for equipment and personnel. The excavation of the tailrace tunnel(5.8m x 5.9m) was completed using Dynatec’s Long Round Jumbo Technology.

Malthus, an eighteenth century economist, predicted a rather dismal future for the world. It was his contention food supplies would not be sufficient for the population of the world because the economy of a nation grew arithmetically while population increased geometrically. As a consequence, within a relatively few years mass famine would spread throughout the world. This prophecy, based on an agrarian economic situation, did not come true at least insofar as the Western World was concerned. In largo measure, the salvation of our part of the earth resulted from the growth engendered by the Industrial Revolution. Throughout much of today's world, however, the Malthusian theory seems to be coming true. The advantages and benefits of the Industrial Revolution have net reached all nations. Further, the situation has been compounded by the benefits of modern medicine. This has reduced child mortality and extended life expectancy, but placed no limitations on births in the developed countries, child mortality has declined to 2 percent and adult life expectancy has doubled, but education and general prosperity have resulted in voluntary limitations on pregnancies thus partly offsetting the increased chance of survivals Even so, the present rate of population increase in Europe is approximately 6 percent per decade, and somewhat higher in the U.S., Japan, and other developed countries. The world as a whole, however, is expected to double its population by the year 2000, This would imply a rate of increase in the less developed countries approximately four times that in Europe.

Although manganese is a metallic element and is widely dispersed in nature, it never occurs except as a compound in combi¬nation with other elements. Use of such compounds in the production of glass is known to have occurred in early Egypt. The dioxide of manganese was considered a compound of iron until 1774 when C.W. Schule first recognized it as an element. In the same year, a Swedish mining engineer, J.G. Gahn, became the first to isolate manganese. In 1856 development of the Bessemer process of steelmaking gave economic importance to manganese, and later, in 1882 Robert Hadfield discovered the benefits of high manganese steels. GEOLOGY Physical Properties Elemental manganese is a silver-gray metal, resembling iron but harder and more brittle and used primarily in alloys (both ferrous and non-ferrous) and a wide variety of chemical compounds. Some of the physical properties of manganese include: melting point¬1 245°C; boiling point-2 150°C; density at 20°C-7.43 g/cm3; specific heat at 25.2°C-O.115 cal/g; latent heat of fusion-63.7 cal/g; hardness on Mohs scale-5.0; linear coefficient of thermal expansion from 0 to 100°C-22 x 10-6. Mineralogy There are over one hundred minerals that contain manganese. These minerals vary from those with compositions that are pre¬dominantly manganese to those having only minor percentages of manganese. Distribution of Deposits Manganese ore deposits are found worldwide and were formed in various geological environments, but only a rather limited num¬ber of deposits have high grade manganese ore in sufficient quan¬tities to be mined and utilized economically on an industrial scale. It is worth noting the fact that almost all of the significant deposits can be classified into two types of deposits: marine chemical sed¬imentary deposits, and residual (secondary) enrichment deposits. There are, however, a much larger number of geological types but these are not of commercial significance at this time. Sedimentary deposits are the most common and are usually stratiform or lenticular. Manganese minerals were formed by a chemical process during the deposition of marine sediments. They usually contain manganese oxides and carbonate minerals, some¬times interbedded together or with other sedimentary rocks such as limestone or shale. Examples of this type of deposit are the Russian ore bodies of Nikopol and Tchiatoura, as well as the Kalahari deposits in South Africa and deposits of Groote Elyandt in Aus¬tralia. Residual deposits were formed in a different way: by alteration of existing manganese deposits or by concentration of the manga¬nese minerals when other minerals were washed away by weath¬ering or ground water processes. The Nsuta deposit in Ghana, the Amapa deposit in Brazil, the Moanda deposit in Gabon, and nodules in the residual clays of the US Southern Appalachians are examples of this type of geological process. In the case of the Ghana and the Amapa deposits, this is only true for the outer layers of the deposit containing oxide minerals, the inner part being comprised of car¬bonate minerals including manganese carbonate, probably from marine origin. Some sedimentary and residual-type deposits have been metamorphosed, giving rise to small high grade ore bodies. These deposits are regionally metamorphosed, occurring in mar¬bles, slates, quartzites, schists, and gneisses. Some of these deposits, such as the Franklin, NJ, deposit are rich enough to be commercial without secondary enrichment; however, most of the exploitable deposits have been secondarily enriched. Due to the diversity and complexity of manganese deposits, both with respect to deposition and chemistry, a wide range of impurities are almost invariably present in the ores. Table 1 shows that the reserves (i.e., a measured resource that can be economically and legally extracted) are estimated at 814 x 106 tons of contained Mn, which equates to more than a 100 year supply at the current level of production. The reserve base is made up of the marginally economic reserves and sub-economic re¬sources and are some 4.5 times greater than the proven reserves. Also apparent from study of Table I is the fact that some 75% of manganese reserves are found in two countries, the USSR and South Africa. On the other hand, North America (i.e., the United States and Canada) have few significant deposits. The Department of Thoracic Surgery and Pathology at the Toronto General Hospital have had a long standing interest in the early detection and treatment of carcinoma of the lung. Our initial experience was with a population at risk due to a prolonged period of cigarette smoking. More recently our efforts have turned to industrial exposure, specifically in the nickel and uranium industries. [Initial Screening Project] (1) For a three year period 1963 to 1966 a cytology screening program was carried out through the Out-Patient Department. The study was limited to cigarette smokers over 40 in age. A total of 1586 patients were examined. Of the sputa collected, the classification is seen in Table 1. There were 11 malignant sputa present. Added to this number were 25 patients with symptoms, normal chest X-rays, but malignant cells on cytology, and a further 5 patients in whom an abnormality (eventually proven non-malignant) showed on X-ray, and sputum showed malignancy which was radio logically occult. (Table II). This gave a total of 41 patients with malignant sputum who were evaluated between 1960 and 1966. The clinical course of these patients is seen in Table III. Only 19 of 41 patients had localization and treatment of their tumour during that study period and this low rate of localization attests to the technical difficulties endoscopy in that day presented. The method of localization was as follows: a) 6 patients showed an area of segmental pneumonitis somewhere in this time period b) Using the rigid bronchoscope localized the tumour in 9. This was proven by direct biopsy, and frequently required more than one bronchoscopy over a prolonged time period. c) bronchograms and tomograms showed abnormalities in 5 patients. Of these 19 patients, 5 were treated by radiotherapy because of general condition or refusal of surgery. Three of the irradiated patients died of recurrent cancer within three years. The other two died within one year of unrelated disease. Fourteen patients underwent resection, with one operative mortality. At pathology, the tumours were "in situ" in 6 and invasive in 13. There was no evidence of nodal spread. When last followed up in 1979, there were no cases of recurrent tumour and no cases of second lung primary tumours. Similar experiences have been reported from the Mayo Clinic (2), Johns Hopkins (3) and Memorial Hospitals (4). Early detection of radiologically occult tumours which are in situ or minimally invasive has given uniformly good results. There have been no deaths from recurrent or metastatic cancer in surgically resected patients, and only one second primary tumour has been detected. Interestingly, the Hopkins group reports that 5 patients with Stage I squamous cell tumours refused operation. One refused any treatment and died of disease at 12 months. Three were radiated, and were alive from 14-38 months post-treatment, all with evidence of recurrent disease. [Sudbury Sintering Plant Study](5) From 1948 to 1963 an open travelling-grate sintering process was employed to convert nickel sulfide to nickel oxide at an International Nickel Company operation. The environment in this plant was particularly dusty and filled with fumes. It became apparent by 1969 that the incidence of bronchogenic carcinoma was markedly increased in workers from this plant. A concerted effort was made to track down all workmen with this exposure. During 1973 and 1974, 268 men were studied. Chest radiographs were done and showed no mass lesions. Sputum was collected on three consecutive days and analyzed. There were 12 men with malignant sputum, all of the squamous cell variety. Two refused any investigation, one presenting 31/2 years later with extensive hronchogenic carcinoma, and the other 5 years later with extensive carcinoma of the maxillary sinus. In the remaining ten patients careful rhinolaryngeal examination as well as a detailed bronchoscopy, involving examination, brushings and biopsy of all pulmonary segments was carried out. One patient was found to have laryngeal carcinoma and was treated by radiation. In nine patients, the malignancy was localized to the lung, leading to six lobectomies, two pneumonectomies and one sleeve lobectomy at operation. However, the follow-up in these cases suggests a different biological behaviour with these industrially related tumours. While no tumour has recurred locally, one patient has died of metastatic cancer and two patients have developed second and one patient a third pulmonary primary cancer. However, survival has still been much better than wits radiographically manifest lung cancer. [Technique of Localization] (6) Following a careful rhinolaryngeal examina examined and then the lower respiratory tract is examined. This is all performed under general anaesthesia. Last year in the US alone, about 425 Mt (468 million st) of minerals and coal were beneficiated by froth flotation. This number indicates that from 1983 there was a 10% increase in tonnage of min¬erals and coal beneficiated by the indus¬try. A significant improvement was seen in the tonnage processed by the nonferrous minerals and coal industries. BP Minerals America installed 85 m; (3000 cu ft) flotation cells at the Bing¬ham Canyon mine and concentrator. The new flotation circuit has fewer than 100 cells compared to 2000 flotation cells used in the old plant (Mining Engi¬neering, November 1988). Column flotation use on a commer¬cial scale continues to expand as seen from the interest expressed at the Col¬umn Flotation Symposium (Column Flotation '88). The Magma Copper Co., San Manuel Division replaced all con¬ventional cells with 1.8 x 12 m (6 x 40 ft) column flotation cells for copper con¬centrate cleaning. Also, 1220 mm and 760 mm-diam (48 in. and 30 in.-diam) column cells are operating at the plant in the molybdenum circuit. A commercial Diester Flotaire col¬umn cell for fine coal recovery was installed at the United Coal Wellmore No. 20 plant. The 36.8 m3 (1300 cu ft) cell recovers 13.6 to 18 t/h (15 to 20 stph) of -590 gm (-28 mesh) coal. A similar unit has been installed at Tanoma Mining Co. in Pennsylvania. Various modifications of the column cells are being designed around the world. Jameson (Mining and Metal¬lurgy, 1988) described a new concept whereby the feed and air stream mixture is discharged into a cylindrical column of about 1.2 m (4 ft) height. Recovery and grade of nonferrous minerals have been reported to be better than that in a four-stage conventional flotation clean¬ing circuit. Flotation reagents American Cyanamid and Dow Chemical continued development of a new generation of sulfide collectors. A general feeling is development of new sulfide collectors has not kept up with flotation technology. Additionally, joint efforts between industry and chemical suppliers will likely be necessary to realize the economic benefits of the new technologies, since new chemistries respond differently compared to the conventional collectors. Flocculant development in recent years has been evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Rothenborg reported on development of a new flocculant family (a hydroxymated polyacrylamide desig¬nated S-6703) that has shown consider¬able promise in red mud clarification. Plant testing showed that this new floc¬culant could replace starch and poly¬acrylate and provide significantly higher overflow clarity. Barol Kami (Siirak) and Cleveland¬Cliffs (Hancock) reported development of an amphoteric apatite collector (ATRAC 873) that was used in Tilden's silica flotation process to increase apatite rejection. The collector was engineered for the particular flotation conditions in the complex Tilden process. Significant plant testing with ATRAC 873 showed that this reagent gave significantly in¬creased apatite rejection without any effect on silica flotation effectiveness or selectivity. Electrostatic separation Electrostatic separation is now em¬ployed in the precious metals mining industry to recover gold and silver grills from crushed slag. The installation at Paradise Peak has prompted other op¬erators to consider this application. In another development, attractive potentials for treating very fine minerals (-45 µm or -325 mesh) are being devel¬oped by Advanced Energy Dynamics and by the Department of Energy. Demonstration tests using triboelectric charging/electrostatic separation have been successful on a variety of minerals as well as coal. Magnetic separation Developments in magnetic separa¬tion have transpired on a production scale. Superconducting, high gradient magnetic separation has gained accep¬tance with the successful startup of a second unit treating kaolin at J.M. Huber Corp. This liquid-helium-cooled mag¬net generates 2.0 tesla in a 3-m-diam (120-in.-diam) bore with no power con¬sumption. Wet, high-intensity magnetic separation has been applied to sulfide mineral separations both domestically and abroad. These continuous type of separators are effective in removing residual chalcopyrite and sphalerite from other base metal sulfide concentrates. Separators using high energy rare earth permanent magnets are continu¬ally increasing. Now offered as both drum and roll type, these units are be¬coming a staple in the processing of industrial minerals. Tests using rare earth magnets strategically placed on a spiral concentrator have demonstrated the enhanced recovery of heavy miner¬als such as ilmenite. Classification Although no major technology break¬throughs in classification appear immi¬nent, there is an increasing need for more efficient and cost-effective meth¬ods to make size separations. It is be¬coming more apparent that mineral concentration methods will be more common at very fine sizes, say below 50

Uranium precipitation from an eluate using hydrogen peroxide has been studied in a laboratory continuous unit. The important process parameters were the dosage of H2O2, reaction pH and chloride ion concentration. In the process, the alkaline eluate is acidified to a pH of 2, then H2O2 at 110%-130% of the stoichiometric requirement is added, and finally NaOH is added to maintain a pH of 4 for one hour to complete the precipitation and settling. The chloride content in the system is controlled to 50g/L or below by rejecting part of the decant solution. The process has been successfully employed in commercial operations. The uranium recovery is complete, while the precipitate settles rapidly and can be processed to high purity yellow cake without filtration.

Inertization of coal dust with stone dust is a common control implemented within underground coal mines to mitigate the hazard of a coal dust explosion. To achieve adequate inertization, the total incombustible content (TIC) of the coal/stone dust mixture is required to meet certain percentages depending on the risk and relevant legislation. Current methods for determining the TIC of a mixture involves laboratory analysis, colorimetric comparison, or the use of portable instruments. This paper provides preliminary analysis of determination of a sample’s TIC in real-time with chemometric modelling, using portable instruments employing near-infrared (NIR).

Anionic conditioning of phosphate ores prior to fatty acid flotation is a very critical step that determines the eventual selectivity, recovery and hence the economics of the process. However the chemical mechanisms operating during this conditioning step are not established. Several studies have been conducted in the past to determine the mode of interaction of collectors with the phosphate fractions however these have been done on a laboratory scale using pure phosphate minerals. In order to test the relevance of the observed effects to plant practice in this work a comprehensive survey of plant practice was first conducted and then adsorption on flotation feed and francolite were studied under simulated plant conditions. Effects of conditioning energy and water chemistry as well as solids loading and fuel oil were determined. Most importantly, different adsorption mechanisms were found to be dominant under laboratory and plant conditions. In plant water, there was some physisorption of oleic acid on phosphate flotation feed and francolite in addition to chemisorption. However, in distilled water under laboratory conditions only chemisorption was detected. Fuel oil reduced the residual oleic acid in solution after adsorption, which explains the beneficial role of extender in phosphate flotation. The dissolved species in solution arising from the flotation feed or plant processing water are shown to clearly play a major role in determining the adsorption of oleic acid on the substrates. The study also specifically demonstrates the importance of conducting research tests under plant mixing conditions and plant water chemistry for the results to be useful commercially.

"INTRODUCTION For several decades, the use of fibre-reinforced sprayed concrete (FRSC) has been becoming increasingly widespread, either as a replacement for or in addition to traditional reinforcements. Macro-synthetic fibres appeared on the market at the same time as metal fibres (in the 1980s), but their use has developed more recently in France, starting in the early 2000s. While their properties are attractive for underground operations, their long-term performance remains the subject of some controversy, particularly with regard to the phenomenon of creep [1-5]. Unfortunately, the many differences of protocol among the studies carried out (materials, metering, spraying equipment and test methods, etc.) mean that, in general, the results cannot be compared. Although several methods have been developed to assess the bending creep behaviour of fibre-reinforced concrete, the majority of them test notched beams resting on isostatic supports. There are currently no standardised test methods adapted to FRSC on hyperstatic supports (as is the case for FRSC used for underground support). The Asquapro association has thus developed a new test specially designed for this type of concrete. Slabs of thickness 10cm, measuring 60 x 60 cm in plan have been sprayed and tested under bending stress according to a test procedure inspired by the standardised test of energy absorption capacity (NF EN 14488-5). An experimental campaign was launched in October 2014 to study the behaviour of seven types of sprayed concrete, manufactured using the same concrete matrix: six of them were reinforced with different metal or macrosynthetic fibres and the seventh with a welded wire mesh. Fourteen slabs were sprayed for each type of concrete and also for the non-reinforced concrete with the same matrix. The types of mechanical performances measured were the compressive strength and energy absorption capacity (at seven and twenty-eight days), in addition to the creep behaviour of these seven types of concrete, placed under stress on the seventh day. This article follows on from that published in the WTC 2015 congress proceedings [6]: the programme and the test methods are briefly described here and the results available at the time of writing are presented and discussed."

To model the zinc pressure leach, equations have been written that describe the rates of individual reactions taking place, including (a) oxygen mass transfer, (b) ferrous oxidation by dissolved oxygen, and (c) ferric reactions with ZnS and other minerals. In the continuous process, at steady-state, these take place at the same rate, and so the equations can be solved simultaneously. Model calculations using simultaneous equations are shown in graphical form to demonstrate the effect of different variables on the leach performance.

I appreciate this opportunity to speak before the Society of Mining Engineers of the AIME. The topic of my presentation is the Mine Safety and Health Administrations's (MSHA) concern and obligations with regard to asbestiform minerals. Asbestiform minerals - the magical group of hydrated, silicate minerals which possess a fiber like structure capable of being woven, like and into cloth. Their unique combination of properties, such as resistance to heat and chemical attack, high tensile strength, and flexibility was recognized centuries before Christ. Pausanias, the early Greek geographer, speaks of golden lamps made about 430 B.C. with incombustible wicks of "Carpathian flax." The Romans used asbestos as cremation clothes to conserve the ashes of deceased persons of rank. Charlemagne had an asbestos table cloth that he used to pass through fire to clean (1). Early recognition of the health hazards associated with exposure to asbestos was documented in the first century by Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist, and Strabo, a Greek geographer. Bath wrote of slaves with sickness of the lungs, whose occupation was that of weaving asbestos into cloth. This concern for the health of asbestos workers disappeared over the ages.
