INTRODUCTION This chapter outlines some general principles and procedures that a rock mechanics engineer can use to arrive at a logical design for the size, shape, and spacings of underground openings in various types of com¬petent rock formations. Rock formations can be clas¬sified into six major categories which are useful for design purposes, provided the necessary input data are available regarding the geology of the site, the physical properties of the rock, the in-situ stress field in the rock, and the general geometry of the underground openings. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed a rock classification system based upon these concepts and found it to be useful for design purposes (Obert, et al., 1960; Obert and Duvall, 1967). This classification sys¬tem is given in Table 1; however, an extra column has been added to the original classification to indicate the appropriate design techniques for each rock class. In this classification system, two main classes of rock are considered: competent rock and incompetent rock. Competent Rock Competent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geological characteristics, is capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of any structural support except that provided by unmined rock in the form of pillars and side walls, etc. Roof bolts and small random props which support only local loose rock are not considered structural supports. Competent rock is further subdivided into three ad¬ditional categories-massive, laminated, and jointed¬ which are defined as follows: Massive Rock: Massive rock is a rock formation where the spacing between mechanical defects such as joints, partings, or faults is equal to or greater than the critical dimensions of openings, or where the strength of the bond across these mechanical defects is com¬parable to the rock strength. Laminated Rock: Laminated rock is a rock forma¬tion divided by approximately parallel planes of weak¬ness into lamina whose thicknesses are small compared to critical dimensions of openings and where the bond between the lamina is weak compared to the rock strength. Elastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties will permit the use of elastic theory to predict strains and displacements from applied stresses. Inelastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties are such that strains and displacements are a strong function of time as well as applied stress. Incompetent Rock Incompetent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geologic characteristics, is not capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of additional structural support in the form of linings, steel sets, or systems of props. This classification system for rock depends not only on the mechanical and geologic characteristics of the rock but on the size of openings and their depth be¬low the surface. For example, many competent rocks at shallow depths for small stress fields could become inelastic rock at greater depths and larger stress fields, or competent massive rock for small openings could be¬come laminated or jointed rock for larger openings. Thus, to classify rock for design purposes requires a knowledge of the geologic properties of the rock mass, the physical properties of the rock, the general size of the openings to be mined, and the average range of the in-situ stress field to be encountered. To design underground openings and structures in rock, it is necessary to use criteria of failure for rock under various stress conditions, and to use safety factors to allow for differences between laboratory and in-situ strength properties of rock and to account for errors in¬troduced by the various assumptions made in the design process. Criteria of failure based on maximum stresses have been found to give reliable results in practice. Thus, it is assumed that rock will fail in tension when the tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength of the rock as determined by a standard modulus of rupture test on samples of rock core. If the tensile stresses in rock are small, then it is assumed that the rock will fail at a value of compressive stress equal to the compressive strength of the rock as determined by standard uniaxial compres¬sive strength tests on samples of rock core. The Pima mine, 39,000 ton per day copper mine, is located 17 miles south of Tucson, Arizona. The mine is in a sequence of Paelozoic and Mesozoic sediments striking east-northeast and dipping southeasterly intruded by a Tertiary quartz monzonite porphyry. The Paleozoic Permian(?) dolo¬mites, limestones, and sandstones have been altered to talc-silicate skarn, marble and quartzite. The overlying Mesozoic Triassic(?) clastic sediments have undergone some recrystallization and hydro¬thermal alteration. The clastic metasediments are divided into three distinct lithologic units, lithic arenite, arkose, and inter¬bedded and overlying black argillite. Three types of hydrothermal alteration in the clastic rocks are propylitic alteration (epidote, chlorite and quartz, with or without sericite), quartz-sericite alteration, and potassic alteration (K-feldspar and quartz, with or without sericite and chlorite). The porphyry has undergone potassic alteration. Dominant structures are an east-west post mineral fault in the western part of the pit, and strong low angle faulting and shearing which truncates the ore body at depth. Two joint sets, one parallel to bedding and the other at right angles to bedding are prominent in the mine. Faulting is in two dominant directions, one striking northwest, dipping northeast and the other striking northeast, dipping northwest. Mineralization is predominantly disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite, and molybdenite-quartz veinlets. There are lens important amounts of magnetite, hematite, sphalerite, galena, tennantite and bornite. Mineralization is believed to be both structurally and chemically controlled.

Over a quarter of a century ago a New Zealand physicist suggested the possibility of detecting coal seam discontinuities by a seismic method carried out underground in the mine workings (Evison 1955). Twenty years ago initial experiments were performed in Germany (Krey 1963). Since then research has continued, notably in Britain and Germany, in order to provide a reliable fault and washout detection system. The National Coal Board of Great Britain has now carried out more than 250 surveys in Britain, France and Australia. The first NCB survey in the U.S., a successful application of the technique to an Ohio coal seam, will be described and the strengths and limitations of the method explained.

"Excavation and initial support of the New Irvington Tunnel presented significant challenges, including rapidly changing ground conditions, heavy ground loads, and squeezing. Such behaviors were anticipated from historic tunneling records of the adjacent Existing Irvington Tunnel, and extensive site investigation, but clearer understanding of their actual extent and causes has resulted from convergence measurements, observations of ground behavior, initial support monitoring and detailed geologic mapping. Time-dependent movements, documented hours to months after excavation in clay-rich rock and in moderately to intensely fractured rock, identified squeezing areas, allowed classification by currently-used predictive methods and added to the list of lessons learned in tunneling such ground. INTRODUCTION In March 2003 the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) authorized funding for the $4.6 billion Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) to repair, replace, and seismically upgrade its water system. The program consists of 35 local projects located within San Francisco and 48 regional projects located in several counties from the Sierra foothills to the San Francisco Bay Area. The New Irvington Tunnel (NIT), a key component of the WSIP, is located east of Fremont in Alameda County, on the east side of San Francisco Bay. The NIT is a new 18,660 foot (5,689 m), redundant tunnel, 190 to 670 feet (58–204 m) offset from, and subparallel to the Existing Irvington Tunnel (EIT). Built between 1928 and 1932, the EIT was constructed with an unreinforced cast-in-place concrete lining and is vulnerable to damage in the event of a major earthquake along the two closest active faults. The Hayward Fault is located less than a mile west of the tunnel, and the Calaveras Fault is located half a mile east of the tunnel. Although the alignment does not intersect these faults, the shaking and sympathetic displacement along secondary faults that cross the tunnel alignment are potential hazards. The NIT provides a seismically reliable water transmission facility capable of withstanding earthquake damage and maintaining continuous water service after a major earthquake. The NIT also adds system redundancy and provides for operation flexibility of running water through both tunnels, or through one tunnel while the other is out of service for inspections and maintenance."

Large tonnages of copper and molybdenum sulfide ore are treated by flotation. Substantial savings could be realized, particularly in high-capacity concentrators, by use of a simplified flotation technique involving lower reagent consumption. Chalcopyrite and molybdenite from some deposits can be floated by use of only a frother as a single flotation reagent; acceptable concentrate grade and recovery can be obtained. Separation of molybdenite from copper sulfides may become simpler and less costly. The genesis of the ore and the ions present in the flotation pulp liquid phase appear to be the major success-determining factors.

The purpose of the project is to divert flood flows of North Potato Creek. The project is located in the southeast corner of Tennessee near Copperhill, approximately 160 kilometers north of Atlanta, Georgia. The project consists of: a 28-meter high dam, a 90-centimeter diameter outlet conduit; an emergency spillway; and a 4.0-meter diameter hard rock trans-basin diversion tunnel. This floodwater management system was part of Cities Service Company mine safety program for the Cherokee orebody which is partially located within the stream channel. The following paper describes the entire project development from feasibility studies to design and construction management.

The glass container industry is the largest producer of glass in the United States. As of this writing, there are approximately 89 active domestic production locations. In 1984, the industry shipped 11.8 million tons of glass containers. Approximately 70% of this production was clear or flint glass, 20% amber, 7% green, and the remainder miscellaneous colors. Although the production of nearly 12 million tons of glass is impressive, anyone following the industry over the last five years is aware that the industry has changed from a pattern of growth in the 1970's to one of maturity in the 1980's. Some observers, less generous, perhaps, have described the 1980's as a period of decline. In 1981, there were 119 production facilities which produced 13.2 million tons of glass the previous year. This equates to a 10% reduction in glass container production from 1980 to 1984, with a corresponding impact on the segment of the industrial minerals producers serving the container glass industry, as shown in Figures 1 and 2.

Effects of moisture absorption on the behavior of the Dykersburg shale overlying Harrisburg coal seam in Southern Illinois are presented in this paper. Cylindrical samples of the shale 2.5 cm in diameter and 5.0 cm long were studied for weight gain and swelling strains at 90, 95, and 100 percent relative humidity and under immersed water conditions. After attaining equilibrium conditions, the samples were studied for changes in the strength and deformation behavior. The depth of moisture penetration was measured using the Vickers microhardness measurements. Using the basic mass transfer concepts, effective diffusion coefficients were computed for the shale.

Careful financial analysis of capital investments has always been a vital task in mining which is one of the most capital intensive sectors of the economy. Furthermore, mining costs have leapt ahead at an astonishing rate in recent years not just due to accelerated inflation, which affects everyone, but also due to the imposition of enormous costs of enviromental regulation and the continuing decline in ore tenor. Not only have unit costs risen, but the amount of effort expended to recover a pound of metal has increased due to the inexorable decrease in ore grades. New low-margin, high-volume mining investments place increasing importance on sound financial planning. Owing to the enormous investments involved, a greater share of individual corporate resources is committed to these projects than is normally the case in other industries. Thus, the consequences of failure are extremely grave, and a close examination of all inputs to the evaluation equation is clearly indicated.

Kuroko deposit is a stratabound massive sulphide and sulphate deposit associated with Miocene submarine volcanics and has been considered to be a prototype of meta- morphosed Palaeozoic and Precambrian equivalents. Since the discovery of Uchinotai deposit of the Kosaka mine in 1959, Dowa and other mining companies have conducted intensive exploration work in the Hokuroku district of northeastern Japan. Dowa has been placing its first priority on the exploration of Kuroko deposits and made a series of remarkable successes in finding the Kuroko deposits, i.e. Uchinotai, 1959; Matsumine, 1963; Uwamiki, 1966; Fukazawa, 1969 and Ezuri, 1975. It is emphasized that our successes have resulted from the proper application of exploration technologies accumulated through our experiences. Firstly we defined the Kuroko horizon and favourable felsic volcanism based on the detailed structural and volczno-stratigraphic study of the Hokuroku district, and then delineated the promising areas by means of the quantitative evaluation of geophysical, geochemical and mineralogical parameters such as the magnetic susceptibility and contents of alkaline and alkaline earth metals in the foot wall dacites and clay mineral assemblages of both hanging and foot wall pyroclastics and dacites. Practical application of these techniques is essential to our routine Kuroko exploration.

Open-pit mines are constructed in materials characterized by the complete range of geologic materials from the most recent alluvial sediments to hard intact crystalline rock. The determination of stable slopes in recent alluvium is in the realm of soil mechanics, an established engineering discipline, well founded on theoretical development and years of substantiating experience. The analytical tools of the soils engineer are chiefly derived from continuum mechanics wherein load-deformation response is governed by mass properties of the substance. At the other end of the spectrum, slopes in hard unweathered rock can generally be analyzed in a straightforward manner by the methods of discontinuum mechanics wherein the properties and orientations of joints control the response of the material. This approach is exemplified by the classical work of Terzaghi (1962). In between these two extremes is a gray area of material types which are composed of stiff soil and incompetent rock. This area is of importance to the mining engineer, since a large portion of open-pit mines is excavated wholly or in part into incompetent rock. This paper describes an approach to pit slope design in incompetent rock in which the material behaves essentially as a continuum. A wide range of geologic materials from stiff soil to poorly indurated sandstone and shale to crushed or weathered crystalline rock appear to fit in this category. These materials all possess certain mechanical properties which must be accounted for in a realistic assessment of slope stability. These properties include nonlinearity, s tress -dependency, and inelasticity. Further considerations involve residual stresses and time-dependent seepage pressures where groundwa.ter is present.

Large reserves of high-purity Permian gypsum crop out and are at shallow depth in three regions of western Oklahoma, Gypsum beds in the Blaine Formation are 10 to 30 feet thick and are generally 95 to 99 percent pure, whereas the massive Cloud Chief Gypsum is 20 to 100 feet thick and is 92 to 97 percent pure. Reserves are estimated at 48 billion short tons. Eight companies in the State currently mine about 1 million tons of gypsum each year for wall- board, for plaster, as a retarder in portland cement, and as a soil conditioner. Future uses, under more favorable market conditions, may be in the chemical industries, largely because of gypsum's potential as a source of sulfur. Three thick sequences of Permian rock salt underlie most of western Oklahoma at depths of 30 to 3,000 feet. Individual salt beds 5 to 30 feet thick are interbedded with thinner layers of shale and anhydrite. Five large salt plains, fed by natural springs of saturated brine constitute additional resources of salt. Reserves, estimated at 20 trillion short tons, are virtually untapped, and, ironically, about 90 percent of the salt used in Oklahoma is imported. Chemical data on the rock salt are lacking, but evaporated salt produced from brines is generally 97 to 99 percent pure. Current production from three solar-evaporation plants is used mainly for stockfeed, recharging water softeners, and deicing roads. Potential uses are in the chemical industries, where salt or brine is a necessary raw material.

The amount of fines in run-of-mine coal has been increasing and coal quality has been deteriorating as a result of the increased use of mechanized and continuous mining methods. Removing the mineral matter and pyritic sulfur from coal prior to combustion will lower transportation costs, improve power plant performance and reduce sulfur dioxide emissions. Since physical cleaning methods can only remove individual particles of mineral matter and pyrite, it is necessary to crush and grind coal to fine sizes to separate these contaminants so they can be removed by deep cleaning processes. The increased portion of fines in run-of-mine coal together with attempts to increase the mineral matter removal efficiency have stimulated interest in fine coal cleaning technology. However, there are many problems to be solved before fine coal cleaning can be applied to power plant coals. These problems include: 1. coal cleaning plant capacity is reduced when conventional cleaning circuits are modifies to deep clean coals; 2. existing equipment and technology is not suitable for cleaning fine coal; 3. coal recovery is reduced; and 4. fine coal is difficult to dewater, dry, handle, transport and store.

The demand and supply of wollastonite has gone through a dynamic period in the 1990's. A 10% -15% growth rate of demand stimulated interest in evaluating new projects. However, the mid-1990's brought declining prices for commodity applications and natural barriers to entry for technical applications, making many of these potential projects uneconomic. Successful projects that were brought to market were done so by incumbent producers. This work examines the competitive structure of the wollastonite market by evaluating the strategic decisions of the industry leader, NYCO Minerals Inc., and a new market entrant, Orleans Resources, in an attempt to identify the environmental threats and opportunities of this industry. Results suggest new entrants like Orleans Resources face significant entry barriers for technical applications, while NYCO Minerals could improve its profitability by having less exposure to commodity applications.

"The US coal mining industry has suffered a recent decline in profits caused by a combination of decline in commodity demand and more restrictive government regulation, forcing coal mining companies to cease production in numerous mines. A 40% decrease in the total number of coal mines occurred from 1994 to 2000. The number of mines remained relatively constant until 2008 when a change of government sparked a series of new environmental regulations which have contributed to another 15% decrease from 2008 to 2016. In contrast, production has only decreased by 3%, increasing from 1994 to 2008, and then decreasing since 2008. However, this value is skewed by large increases in sub-bituminous coal production and decreases in other coal ranks. Several aspects assist in executive decisions on mine longevity and economic worth. Studies of open source mine data collected by mandated government surveys coupled with commodity history can be used to find relationships between mine closures and these elements, which include statistics on production tonnage, seam height, coal rank, etc. This paper looks at coal mining trends since 1994 by comparing mine, market, and regulation factors that may influence mine closure. INTRODUCTION The US coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history, and regulatory impact. TRENDS SINCE 1994 Each year, US coal mines are required to submit data on a wide variety of categories to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data includes administrative records, production values, and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. These resources are the primary sources for the following figures."

"Fostering positive community relations is a principal tenet of sustainable development, but conflict can test even the strongest of relationships. While conflict surrounding resource development projects has the potential to be destructive, it may actually pose opportunities for partnership and collaboration when managed effectively. It is therefore not only important for mineral resource professionals to recognize the financial and social costs associated with legal disputes among project stakeholders, but also for them to prioritize resolving social conflict using alternative channels that allow for win-win outcomes. A variety of dispute prevention and resolution techniques do exist, but successful practice is not yet the norm. Here we review the sources and consequences of social conflict in the context of mining projects, and discuss typical and alternative approaches to conflict management in light of their respective benefits and drawbacks. We also suggest implementation of conflict resolution lessons into resource-related university curricula as a critical step in the continued shift of the mining industry towards sustainable development. It occurs when two or more parties perceive that their needs and interests are in direct competition with each other and believe they cannot be reasonably accommodated. Conflict over mineral resource activities, particularly the distribution of benefit and risk, has become an omnipresent issue throughout the world [6-7]. Contrary to common perception, however, conflict can be a positive, transformative encounter in some instances [2, 8-11]. For this to be possible, society and its acting agents must reconsider how to address conflict. What if conflict were only a challenge to try something different? It is well-understood that the mineral industries must manage an increasingly significant volume of social conflict [12-13], which can be a costly externality impacting all of whom are involved. We commonly consider conflict in a two-party sense, but this deeply over-simplifies the true number of stakeholders. Besides mining companies and community members, government policymakers and regulators, public interest groups, and judicial systems, to name a few, bear the social expenses of poorly-managed conflict [4, 6, 12, 14-22]. It is desirable for interested parties to participate actively in a constructive way to pursue their needs rather than contributing to adversarial relationships, operational problems, and legal costs [1, 4, 12]. Some mining companies are of course already working to develop more productive relationships with their stakeholders, but there is undoubtedly still a gap between ideal and common practices. This gap can inhibit collaboration and threaten the potential for mutually-beneficial resolutions to complex social issues [12]."

I first met Milton Wadsworth in 1951 as an eighteen year old junior taking his mineral processing course at the University of Utah. He guided my senior thesis, evaluating the then new polymer flocculants on settling uranium leached ore pulps. This was before ion exchange and solvent extraction. After my military service and a brief working stint at Kennecott he supervised my PhD work. He encouraged me to be active in AIME and its constituent societies, where both of us have been directors of AIME and presidents of TMS. He has been a consultant for research groups that I have managed. Above all, he has been my mentor and friend for nearly 45 years. Thus, I am honored and particularly pleased to receive 5MB's Wadsworth Award.

The expansion of surface mining has led to the development of very large off-highway trucks currently capable of hauling payloads in excess of 290t. Mine haul roads have historically been designed empirically, relying heavily on local experience; the trend in increasing truck size will thus render the current pavement systems inadequate. Since truck haulage costs can account for 10%-50% of the total costs incurred by a surface mine, not only would the maintenance costs of existing roads of inadequate design increase, vehicle operating and maintenance costs would also increase prohibitively. There is thus a need for improved design technologies encompassing the construction and management techniques of mine haul roads, appropriate for the wheel loads of vehicles now in use. The aim of the paper is to present the different components of a mine haul road design and management system and to demonstrate the value of its application through case studies. The system has been applied at several South-African surface mines and distinct benefits have been derived. The improved structural design of a new road resulted in a 29% saving in construction costs and also provided better service, whilst the optimal selection and management of wearing-course materials provided better functionality at lower total transportation operating costs.
