It was estimated in Chemical Week1 that the uranium fuel requirements for the U.S. Electric Utility Industry by the mid 1980's would be about four times that-of what it is today. This corresponds to approximately 45,000 tons per year of 'yellow cake' - of which a good portion is represented by ammonium diuranate - vs. the 11,700 ton total estimated for 1975. Perhaps just as significant is the 40-fold increase in thirty years projected for the entire world since 1970. Thus by the year 2000. 'yellow cake' production could be in the order of [3]50.000 short tons annually.2 'Yellow cake', so named because of its inherently bright yellow color, is a finely divided precipitate that can be formed after the leaching step when refining uranium ores. Feed solids enhancement then occurs to at least 50% by weight using filters or centrifuges This is followed normally by drying and then calcining with the conversion of ammonium diuranate to triuranium octoxide represented by the following equation: [9 (NH4)2 U2 07 heat 14 NH3 7 + 15 H2O7 + 2N2/ + 6 U308 4] Theoretically, assuming 100% conversion every 100 kgs. or 100 lbs. of ammonium diuranate will result in 90 kgs. or 90 lbs. of triuranium octoxide.

Rock from underground mining has a size-distribution, that varies from mine to mine, depends on rock conditions and mining method and on how much explosives etc, that is used. Because at the high costs, associated with full-scale studies of the size-distribution of blasted rock in a mine, detailed information is seldom published about such size-distributions. However, some facts can be noticed. Rock from tunnelling and other types of development work has a fine fragmentation. Cut-and- fill mining is a method that normally results in blasted rock with an advantageous size distribution. Block caving on the other hand often results in large amounts of boulders, since blasting of the rock is normally not used.

Exploration of the Big Island trona beds by Stauffer Chemical Company started early in 1959. During the intervening time, Stauffer Chemical Company of Wyoming has developed a Large trona mine in this southwestern Wyoming area and has increased the over-all production of soda ash from natural sources by nearly one-half million tons per year. The trona, which is a hydrated sodium bicarbonate mineral, lies some 800 feet into the sedimentary rocks of the Green River formation. Present production is approximately 850,000 tons per year being extracted by means of a room-and-pillar mining system. Conventional coal mining equipment is used with some modification to accommodate local conditions. The mined and crushed ore is hoisted to the surface and processed in an on-site refinery. Refined soda ash is shipped to widely separated locations in covered hopper railraod cars. Construction in progress at Stauffer's plant will double the present capacity.

Today, the future of the coal industry is extremely bright because coal can be produced at a cost which makes it competitive with other energy sources. However, the industry has been forewarned that further cost reductions must be made if it expects to remain a serious contender in the growing energy market. Surface as well as underground operations must be improved. The very same elements which affected production a. few years ago still exist today and will continue to be present in the future. Improvement's in production mining equipment, mining methods, and auxiliary equipment have resulted in reduced costs over the past few years. Efforts must be continued toward further reducing costs in areas which have been improved previously, and new areas should be investigated for possible improvements. Therefore, new techniques must be developed which will enable the industry to augment its current efforts in reducing the cost of mining. The logical place to begin evaluating the factors affecting production and cost is in the immediate face area where a substantial part of the total cost of mining is incurred. The coal industry stands to gain much through the development of new techniques for analyzing the numerous variables affecting production and by establishing methods for eliminating or minimizing the adverse effect of those variables which can be controlled. Intuition and trial-and-error methods have been the standard means used to resolve many of the factors which influence production. As a result, many elements are overlooked or ignored because their effect on production is not pronounced and cannot be readily resolved. The need for a method of analyzing such factors was recognized by the Office of Coal Research. Therefore, in April 1962, under OCR sponsorship, a. research project was initiated at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). The objective of the project was to identify the factors which influence mining costs in the immediate production area, and to develop methods and techniques which will enable the coal operator to minimize production costs. The objective of the research at VPI has been successful, and techniques have been developed for establishing quantitative facts concerning the interrelationships of production activities.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently studied several redirected scrubber discharge configurations in its full-scale continuous miner gallery for both dust and gas control when using an exhaust face ventilation system. Dust and gas measurements around the continuous mining machine in the laboratory showed that the conventional scrubber discharge directed outby the face with a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust curtain setback appeared to be one of the better configurations for controlling dust and gas. Redirecting all the air toward the face equally up both sides of the machine increased the dust and gas concentrations around the machine. When all of the air was redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, gas accumulations tended to be reduced at the face, at the expense of increased dust levels in the return and on the curtain side of the mining machine. A 6.1-m (20-ft) exhaust curtain setback without the scrubber operating resulted in the lowest dust levels around the continuous mining machine, but this configuration resulted in some of the highest levels of dust in the return and gas on the off-curtain side of the mining face. Two field studies showed some similarities to the laboratory findings, with elevated dust levels at the rear corners of the continuous miner when all of the scrubber exhaust was redirected toward the face either up the off-tubing side or equally up both sides of the mining machine.

On January I, 1988, Chino Mines Company initiated the use of a system of economic splits for all materials encountered in mining. All mined material is evaluated as mill ore, solvent extraction-electrowinning plant feed and non-ore material to determine its disposition. Post-implementation studies indicate that a significant increase in financial returns on material mined was realized when compared with the copper cut-off grade previously in use.

Current steel consumption for grinding media, mill liners and rods in North America runs in excess of 400,000 tpy in the mineral processing industries. Steel consumption ranks as one of the major consumables along with energy in most operations with total annual industry expenditures in excess of $275 million. It is generally agreed that there are 3 main categories of wear responsible for this metal loss. These three main types can be loosely defined as follows; 1) Abrasion. The cutting, rubbing, scrapping and gouging of the metal surface by the ore with which it is in contact; 2) Impact. Spalling on both micro and macro scale, breakage, and deformation due to metal to metal contact; 3) Corrosion. The story of the Aitik mine begins in the early thirties. At that time blocks of low grade chalcopyrite impregnations were found in Swedish Lapland not far from the present mine, some 40 miles north of the arctic circle in the vicinity of the iron ore field at Gällivare. The ore prospect was viewed upon several times. By means of geophysical studies and an extensive diamond drilling programme during the end of the fifties and the beginning of the sixties a huge low grade ore body was discovered under the muskeg overburden. In 1965 55 million tons of ore with 0.5 % Cu was known to a depth of 160 ft. In 1970 the ore reserves had increased to 165 million tons with 0.40 g, Cu at a depth of 400 ft. Decision to develop the mine and to start production at an annual production of 2,2 million tons was made in 1965. A mine and concentrating plant, the A section, went on stream in 1968. In 1970 decision was made to expand the production with 3,3 million tons pr year. A second section of the plant, the B section, went on stream during the end of 1972 and the beginning of 1973 The production in the initial plant has been increased to 3,1 million tons pr year and during 1974 the combined A and B sections are expected to treat' about 7,2 million tons of ore. The two sections will treat 10,000 and 13,000 tons per day.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) constructed four passive biochemical reactor systems (BCRs) to treat mining influenced water (MIW) in the Bunker Hill Superfund area near Coeur D?Alene, Idaho between 2002 and 2003. Initially, the BCRs operated very effectively. However, in the past couple of years, the zinc removal effectiveness of the four BLM BCRs has declined [1]. The central objective of this study was to characterize the microbial communities and substrate present within the BLM BCRs and to use these factors to propose strategies to promote sustained sulfate reduction levels. Microbial communities were characterized by quantifying total bacteria and sulfate reducing species. Substrate was characterized by quantifying the percent organic, acid soluble organic, acid insoluble organic, and bioavailable material within the BCR. The results suggest the depletion of bioavailable organic substrates is the primary cause of the decline in zinc removal and not the microbial community structure. The ability to assess the amount of bioavailable organic substrate and microbial community is important to the understanding of the sulfate reducing capacity of the BLM BCRs and developing strategies to facilitate performance enhancement of the current BLM BCRs. The characterization of organic substrate and microbial community structure are also important to improving design of future passive treatment systems for mining influenced waters.

The Powderhorn complex as a source of perovskite (calcium titanate) containing about 1.5% rare earths has been examined in several recent feasibility studies. Much promising exploration and process research has been done in recent years. This paper is presented with cautious optimism and with the acknowledgment that there may be some technical and economic areas yet to be explored. The Powderhorn carbonatite and alkalic stock in Gunnison County, Colorado, lies about 203 airlines km southwest of Denver at an elevation of 2450 to 2750 m (see Figures land 2). All of the mineable ore bodies are owned by Buttes Resources Company of Houston, Texas.

This paper describes variations in feed characteristics, preparation techniques, response to induration and product quality in pelletizing magnetite concentrates, earthy hematite ore fines, and specular hematite concentrates in grate kiln systems. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company manages plants processing these various materials on the Marquette Iron Range in northern Michigan. The operations include the Humboldt Mining Company, Marquette Iron Mining Company, Empire Iron Mining Company and the Pioneer Pellet Plant. The combined output of the operations is approximately 9,000,000 long tons per year. The Humboldt Mining Company, owned by Ford Motor Company and Cliffs, produces pellets from a specular hematite concentrate. The Empire operation, which processes magnetite ore, is owned by Inland Steel Company, McLouth Steel Corporation, International Harvester and Cliffs. The Pioneer operation, which processes earthy hematite ores, is a joint venture of Republic Steel Corporation, McLouth Steel Corporation, Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Cliffs. The Marquette Iron Mining Company, owned by hones and Laughlin Steel Corporation, International Harvester, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation and Cliffs, produces pellets from specular hematite concentrate at the Republic Mine and Eagle Mills Pellet Plant. With the exception of the Eagle Mills plant, the operations employ the grate-kiln pelletizing system. Descriptions of the Empire, Pioneer and Republic operations, which have a combined capacity of 7,200,000 tons per year, are given in the paper.

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. The filtration and dewatering results of -32 mesh Pittsburgh seam coal are discussed with reference to the microscopic structure parameters, i.e., particle segregation in the cake and particle and pore size distributions at different layers. At low solid concentration of 0.33 kg coal/kg water, a non-uniform cake structure is observed in which the particle and pore sizes increase from the top to bottom layers in the filter cake. An increase in the solid concentration in slurry produces more uniform cake structure and higher filtration and dewatering rates. Air bubble entrapment in the coal filter cakes is also discussed.

Finely sized Upper Freeport coals are beneficiated to reduce ash and sulfur using high-intensity magnetic separation to process both (1) raw, untreated coal as well as (2) raw coal which was pre-treated thermally with steam and air. Substantial, sulfur and ash reduction can be obtained using both approaches to magnetic beneficiation of coal fines, but evidence indicates that pre-treatment which would constitute a costly supplementary step is technically inferior to the direct beneficiation of raw, untreated coal. These bench-scale studies demonstrate that if high-intensity,; high capacity, dry, magnetic beneficiation equipment can be developed and' installed at coal burning power plants or at appropriate points in coal preparation plants substantial quantities of sulfur may be removable from coal after pulverization as a means' to reduce air pollution.

This paper describes the results of an underground coal mine trial installation of a shielded trailing cable. The cable was a three conductor, round, type SHC-GC, and was installed on a shuttle car in a conventional room and pillar mining section. The purpose of presenting the information is to prepare mine operators for proposed legislation that will require shielding on low-voltage trailing cables. Specifically, machine modifications are required to cable reels, packing glands, and couplers. Cable splicing is not as complex as expected but additional materials are needed in the kit and splice training is necessary. Even though shielding will cause some problems for the mine operator, it can reduce the hazard of electrical shock to mine workers. This paper will present information that mine operators can use to solve most of the problems that will be encountered if they are required to install shielded cables. The in-mine evaluation was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.

Historically, geologic data has not been adequately considered in resource estimation. More recently, with the use of computers and sophisticated estimation algorithms and geostatistical justifications, geology has been downplayed further. Many reasons are given for not using geology including cost, time and irrelevance. None are valid. Boundaries defining mineral domains should be used in computer-generated resource estimates. Selected case histories show how the failure to honor geology has caused discrepancies in resource estimates of actual in-place resources. After-the-fact differences have included decreases in tonnage of up to 50% and increases up to 300%; partial to complete recategorization of material; and 50% decreases in grade. The costs of gathering and using geology are trivial compared to the potential consequences.

Drilling programs and the study of active geothermal systems have shown that the reservoir rocks in many fields contain minor quantities of base and precious metals. Commonly, base-metal sulfides occur in the subsurface but, where present, Au, Ag, Hg, As, T1 and Sb rich precipitates deposit near, or at, the surface. Although in some fields (Geysers, Larderello, Tongonan) some of the ore minerals (and others) are relict, there is evidence that they are now depositing in a few systems. Recent work on active hydrothermal systems in New Zealand shows that: (1) Sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite (forming veins and disseminated discrete crystals) plus rare pentlandite, cobaltite and arsenopyrite, occur at Broadlands, NZ. Rare quantities of base-metal sulfides also occur in cores and cuttings from the geothermal fields of Waiotapu, Kawerau, Tauhara, and Ngawha. Further, Kakimoto (1983) has identified cassiterite, native silver, and trace gold in cores from Tauhara, in the south-eastern part of the Wairakei field. Bore temperatures at the depths from which these minerals were recovered are mostly between 220° and 300°C, but at Broadlands are locally as low as 120°C. The host rocks are Quaternary talc-alkali, silicic lavas and pyroclastic rocks, andesites, dacite and deep Mesozoic greywackes and argillites; however, there is no obvious relationship between mineralization and stratigraphy, permeability or well output. (2) The deposition of amorphous precious metal precipitates (Au, Ag, Hg, As, Sb, T1) from hot springs and well discharges has taken place at Broadlands, Waiotapu and Rotokawa; it also occurs at Kawerau. (3) Water discharging from Frying Pan Lake, Waimangu, is presently depositing siliceous sinter containing up to 4.1% tungsten. A characteristic of mineral-depositing fluids in the New Zealand geothermal fields is their very low salinity (total dissolved salts of 3000 ppm or less but with high CO2); they are of near- neutral alkali chloride composition, although water discharging from Frying Pan Lake has a pH of 4.5, and very low metal contents. Very effective concentration processes (10 times for gold at Broadlands) must occur: in the subsurface these include boiling and rapid cooling but near, and at, the surface, mixing of waters of different pH seems to dominate. In particular, descending acid condensate, derived from separated steam and oxidation of H2S mixes with its parent alkali chloride water, resulting in precipitation of amorphous ore metals. Base-metal sulfides also occur in veins and as disseminated grains in geothermal fields at Tongonan, Leyte and Southern Negros, Philippines. These fields have a porphyry-type setting with host rocks of Miocene andesitic lavas and pyroclastics intruded by diorites so that the fields have undergone complicated thermal histories before cooling to their present base temperatures of about 325°C. Precious metals have precipitated from waters from some wells (Leach, pers. comm.) but they do not, as yet, form ore-grade deposits.

INTRODUCTION Underground mines in many parts of the world have elevated levels of short-lived 222Rn daughters. Lung cancer implicating exposure to short-lived daughters is documented in the U.S., Czechoslovakia, Canada, Sweden, the U.K., France and Newfoundland. An elevated lung cancer mortality (in excess of that expected) has been observed when cumulative exposure to alpha emitting short-lived 222Rn daughters (218Po, 214pb 214Bi 214Po) is greater than about 60 working level months (WLM) [1]/ (Hewett, D. 1979). This is equal to an absorbed alpha dose of about 30 rads to shallow basal cells in bronchial epithelium. Long-lived alpha emitters are also present in underground mines, and especially uranium mines because of airborne particulates containing uranium. The 238U parent of this primordial series supports other long-lived emitters 234U 230Th, 226Ra, Pb(210Po) which are in some degree of radioactive equilibrium with the parent 238U. Airborne particulates can be present due to drilling on the face of the ore body as well as in all parts of the mine through resuspension from the mine floor. Particles from 1 µm to about 5 µm penetrate the nose with reasonable efficiency and deposit primarily in the tracheobronchial tree. They are removed by ciliary motion (the bronchial escalator) but deliver an alpha dose to basal cells in bronchial epithelium during clearance in the same manner as short-lived 222Rn daughters. It is the purpose of this work to indicate the alpha dose to basal cells in bronchial epithelium delivered by the long-lived emitters 234, 238U. The dose calculations reported here based upon a few measured values of these isotopes in air in uranium mines in New Mexico and Colorado. MEASURED 234, 238U IN URANIUM MINE ATMOSPHERES In 1979, the U.S. Bureau of Mines undertook a study to evaluate personal monitors to be worn by miners to measure short-lived 222Rn daughters. One of these devices sampled air at 100 cm3/min through a 13 mm glass fiber filter, with a small pump worn on the belt. Alpha particles emitted by 222Rn daughters on the filter were measured continuously by a thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) chip. Each monitor was worn by a miner for a 170 hour working month and approximately one cubic meter of air was sampled during this period. Six different mines were selected for the test in New Mexico and Colorado. The mines used either wet or dry drilling methods. Miners in each location were equipped with the personal monitors. Subsequent to their use in evaluating the shortlived daughters, Dr. Robert Droullard of the Bureau generously gave us these filter samples along with a few blank glass fiber filters from the same box of filters used in the study so that long-lived emitters present in these mine atmospheres could be determined radiochemically. Four of the samples have been run for 234, 238U. The radiochemical procedure for uranium is adapted from USDOE, Environmental Measurements Laboratory Manual (Harley, J.H., 1976). Briefly, the samples were placed in platinum crucibles, spiked with 232U tracer and pretreated with nitric and hydrofluoric acid. The residue was fused with potassium fluoride to transpose to pyrosulfate. The fused cake was dissolved in 7 [N] hydrochloric acid and the solution passed through an anion exchange column to isolate uranium. Iron was removed using mercury cathode electrolysis. Uranium was electrodeposited onto platinum dies and counted using solid-state alpha spectrometry. The samples from each type of mine (wet and dry) were analyzed. The samples in the "wet" mine in New Mexico were selected on the basis of the original TLD measurement because they were near the maximum occupational standard for radon daughters. These samples should also represent upper limits to longlived activity encountered, since they were obtained at drilling operations on the face of the ore body. Samples collected in the "dry" mine in Colorado were pot associated with a particular location in the mine and should be representative of a month long overall exposure in many locations and operations. The Los Bronces Mine and Concentrator, one of the three operating units of Compania Minera Disputada de Las Condes S.A. (an Exxon Minerals Co. affiliate), is located in the high Andes of East-Central Chile approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Santiago at an elevation of 3,650 meters above sea level. (Figure 1). Santiago, the capital city of Chile, is located at an elevation of about 500 meters above sea level and enjoys a very mild climate, similar to some areas of California. At the mine site, however, extremely heavy winter conditions prevail occasionally, with very heavy snow and the resulting snow avalanches endangering installations and people. At the same time, ideal skiing conditions are found at the nearby ski resort of Portillo and Farellones. Mount Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the western hemisphere is only about 55 kilometers further to the northeast of the Los Bronces mine.
