During 1963 more than 200 million tons of coal was consumed by the public utility industry. Ash residual, from the burning of this coal has caused disposal problems. In order to prevent air pollution, dust collection systems have been installed to suppress the fine ash emitted from boilers before it is discharged into the atmosphere. The collected ash, called fly ash, must be removed from the dust collection facilities and disposed in some manner, usually at a substantial cost to the utility. Many years ago fly ash disposal was not a serious problem because the demand for power was relatively low and coarse coal was burned on stoker type traveling grate machines. The low burning rates utilized on these grates did not produce large quantities of air-borne coal ash while the mechanics of this system of burning resulted in a clinkered residue of cinders. Both of these conditions resulted in the production of only small quantities of fly ash. As the demand for electricity increased, a method of burning pulverized coal was developed and was introduced to the public utility industry in 1918 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.1 This method of firing was considered a significant advance in steam electric generation as it (1) permitted the use of coals that could not be economically fired by other methods and (2) has generally resulted in improved efficiency, greater generating capacity and lower costs.2 The utilization of larger generating units using pulverized coal substantially increased the quantity of fly ash which resulted in a' more severe disposal problem.

"INTRODUCTION The Central District of the Florida phosphate industry is located in southwest Polk and southeast Hillsborough Counties, with the Southern Extension lying in western Hardee, eastern Manatee and northwest De Soto Counties. (Lawver, 1983) Figure 1 shows the major phosphate formations in Florida. Almost all Florida phosphate production has been in the Central district with additional production from a mine in the Northern District. The Central District is comprised of the Bone Valley Deposit, a relatively thin layer of high grade ore which has been the main source of phosphate mining for decades, and the Hawthorn formation, a thick but low grade formation which covers most of peninsular Florida. (Lawver, 1983) Florida phosphate producers use the Crago process where calcium phosphate is floated with anionic, fatty acid type collectors followed by cationic reverse flotation of silica with amine type collectors. The phosphate matrix is put through various size separation techniques to obtain a typical -28 Mesh (< 700 µm) particle size for fine flotation and a -16 mesh (< 1190 µm) to +28 mesh (> 700 µm) particle size for coarse flotation. In some cases this coarse fraction can be sent to shipping as an intermediate product. The +16 mesh (>1190 µm) to – ¾“ (19 mm) fraction is sent to shipping as a final product called pebble. Figure 2 demonstrates a simplified diagram of the mining and processing of calcium phosphate (matrix) through a Central Florida mine. Particle size and mineralogy are important considerations in the Crago process for two main reasons, the mass of the particle and the particle surface area. Both of which are dependent on the coordination of the anionic collector to available Ca2+ sites on the minerals’ surface. The increased surface area, and available Ca2+, of the smaller apatite particles will allow for more fatty acid molecules to coordinate than the larger particles, with a lower availability of Ca2+. So, the larger particle would require more collector to be introduced in the system to sufficiently cover the apatite particles to produce a surface sufficiently hydrophobic to attach to air bubbles allowing flotation to occur. (Guan, 2009) The Bone Valley deposit has very favorable flotation characteristics when compared to other mining ores around the world. The matrix of the Bone Valley is relatively high grade, BPL (Bone Phosphate in Lime) values typically range from 6-18%, BPL recoveries, from such a matrix, can often be achieved above 85+% with fatty acid based collectors dosed below 1 #/ton. As mentioned, the sizing is an important step as there is also high grade apatite in the +16 mesh (1mm) that is screened to a final product grade, 60-65% BPL. The lack of quartz in the larger size fraction has allowed the Central District to produce high quality, low cost phosphate product, called pebble, through effective screening with no further beneficiation. Both wired and wireless components are used to deliver custom solutions and can involve interconnectivity between backbones. Systems integration is important as industry adopts proven technologies from other industries. Case stud- ies are given showing how tailor-made approaches deliver needed functionality, with varying degrees of com- plexity, in various classifications of environment, in order to meet a project need.

The occurrence of rock bursts in some deep mines throughout the world constitutes a severe operational hazard. In addition to endangering the safety of the miners, the rock-burst problem is a major factor in mining economically in deep mines because of the loss of production and expense owing to cleanup and repairs following a burst. Developing means of controlling or eliminating rock bursts has been the subject of intensive research for over 50 years. While much has been learned about the effects of rock bursts, little is known about their basic causes; hence, control measures have been at best only partially effective--attested to by the number and severity of bursts that continue to occur throughout the world each year. In the Coeur d&apos;Alene mining district of north Idaho, the rock-burst problem continues as the silver and lead veins persist at depth. These veins are presently being mined at greater than 7,000 feet below the surface and will be mined to some 10,000 feet in the future. The majority of rock bursts in this district occur in pillars. While pillar bursting has been essentially eliminated in some deep-mining districts by longwall techniques, modification or application of this technique to the thin, irregular, and near vertically dipping veins of the Coeur d&apos;Alene district has not been found to be practical. The creation of pillars is a consequence of the horizontal cut and fill mining method used. Figure 1 shows a vertical longitudinal projection of the silver vein at the Galena mine, illustrating the mining method. Stoping progresses between raises and is carried upward between levels. A horizontal pillar is created as a stope approaches a mined-out level. Recent broad-band micro seismic monitoring of rock-burst-prone stopes by the Bureau of Mines has shown that potential burst zones could be delineated weeks in advance of a burst and that a definite sequence of events took place prior to the occurrence of a pillar burst (1). Hence, time was available for control measures to be effected when a stope pillar reached a critical burst geometry.

"Mathematical modeling in conjunction with mineral characterization is widely used as a method for design and optimization of comminution circuits, to simulate the processes of crushing, grinding and classification. An important input parameter to the simulation models is the Run-of-Mine Particle Size Distribution (ROM PSD). The run-of-mine size distributions due to blasting have a great influence on the performance of a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill. In this paper, a mine case study was conducted where there are four primary geologic units and the material properties between the four units vary considerably. Also, the mixture of the four unit that will be mined at any given time also vary considerably. This presents a challenge in terms of optimizing the blasting for mill production throughout the mine life. As part of the case study, field rock mass characterization, laboratory rock mechanics tests, and laboratory breakage tests were conducted. The field characterization and rock mechanics tests provide material properties used to simulate the effect of different blast designs on run of mine particle size distributions (ROM PSD). The JKSimBlast software was used for these simulations. The rock breakage tests provide material properties used to simulate crushing and grinding performance. The JKSimMet software was used for these simulations. The goal of the mine is a mill throughput of 95,000 tonnes (104,720 tons) per day (TPD). Based on this goal, run-of-mine fragmentation analysis was conducted for four blasting designs resulting in powder factors of 0.44, 0.54, 0.64, and 0.94 kg/t. The powder factor of 0.44 represents a standard blasting design, while the 0.54 and 0.64 kg/t designs are high-energy blasts specifically to assist with mill production. The 0.94 kg/t design was investigated for the one geologic unit with very high strength. The results of the run-of-mine fragmentation analysis was then input into a crushing and grinding simulation model to predict the mill throughput for the time periods of 1-5 years and 6-10 years. The results indicate that certain blast designs are able to achieve the 95,000 tonnes TPD (104,720 tons TPD) goal, while other blast designs were not. A standard blast design with a 0.44 kg/t powder factor, for example, was not able to achieve the throughput goal, while a design with a 0.64 kg/t powder factor was able to achieve the goal in both the 1-5 and 5-10 year time periods. INTRODUCTION In recent years, mathematical modeling in conjunction with mineral characterization has been widely used as a method for the design and optimization of comminution circuits. The Run-of-Mine Particle Size Distribution (ROM PSD) is a function of rock properties and design parameters of the blast and has a significant impact on the crushing and grinding treatment circuit. Traditionally, design of the grinding treatment is estimated using only the F80 value instead of the full distribution of sizes in the feed, but the finer sizes have great influence on the treatment of a grinder, particularly in the SAG mill."

The fundamentals behind a novel approach for creating inorganic/polymer hybrids are described. The binding of +2 charged ions, specifically Cue-and Cat+, to ionic functional groups is explored through UV-Vis spectroscopy and zeta potential measurements. The novel approach uses an electric field to drive ions into a functionalized polymeric matrix, thereby inducing the precipitation of calcium phosphate species. Scanning electron microscopy images of the resulting composite illustrate the results of these precipitations with two distinct morphologies observed.

Thermodynamic calculations based on a rigorous mass balance technique have been carried out for the chalcocite-potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) system. The results of the calculations are used to: i) construct Eh-pH diagrams for KEX additions ranging from 0 to 10-4 M, ii) determine the amounts of cupric ions and copper xanthate formed at different Eh and pH values to make three-dimensional diagrams, and iii) determine the minimum KEX addition required to form CuX and CuX2.. This allows prediction of the optimum conditions for flotation and comparison of this with microflotation test data. In addition, voltammetry experiments have been conducted on chalcocite electrodes at pH 9.2 and pH 6.8 in order to gain information on the role of metastable species in flotation. On the basis of these experiments, possible reaction mechanisms are discussed and comparisons are made with what is expected on the basis of thermodynamics.

"This work focuses on the extraction of rare earth metals (REE) from aqueous solutions using stimuli-responsive polymers. Various parameters affecting the adsorption capacity of the polymer, including pH, polymer concentration and REE concentration were studied. The interfacial behavior of REE in aqueous phase before and after polymer addition and the mechanism of the formation of metal-polymer complexes and their properties were investigated using UV/VIS spectroscopy. Results obtained would help to test the feasibility of employing stimuli responsive polymers in pre-concentration of rare earth elements associated with other elements in mineral aqueous streams prior to solvent extraction. The pre-concentration step would reduce the amount of organic solvents used for extraction and striping compared to conventional extraction processes. INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) have become the foundation for several technologies and have been used extensively in many industries such as modern electronics, green energy, health care and transportation and defense [1-4]. As these industry sectors are growing, the global consumption of REEs is going to increase dramatically. The current global REEs demand is estimated to be 105,000 tons of rare earth oxides per annum with an expected annual growth of 5.6% [5-6]. Rare earth elements are produced from different sources (primary and secondary). China is considered as the largest producer of REE in the world, providing about 90% of the world’s mine production while the United States is second with 4% of the mine production [7]. High global demand for rare earth materials results in shortage of such materials in the near future. It should be considered that the term ‘‘rare’’ earth is not an accurate term, since they are abundant in some extent in the Earth’s crust, but are typically finely dispersed. Thus, nowadays looking for more efficient and cheaper methods for extraction, separation and purification of low concentrated REE ores and exploring secondary sources are essential. Rare earth materials are found in raw condition and require treatment that involves several processes, which can consume money and time. Recent improvements in extraction and recycling technology have made the extraction of rare earth elements from rare earth sources more feasible in terms of cost and time [8-10]. Physical and pyrometallurgical methods require high-energy and thus high costs. Moreover, due to environmental problems, environmental protection systems are required, and they are not as adaptable as chemical processes [11, 12]."

Longwalls using shearers in seam heights of less than 1.2 m (48 inches) are relatively rare in the U.S. Westmoreland Coal Company is currently operating a shearer-equipped longwall at a cutting height of 1.17 m (46 inches) in its Bullitt Mine. This face has averaged 2795 metric tons/day of operation since its startup on April 3, 1984. Longwall productivity in thin seams is substantially impacted by equipment reliability and availability of useable working room for travel and access. This paper addresses the design criteria used in selecting this face equipment, with the goal of maximizing these two parameters. Equipment discussed includes shearers. face conveyor, shields, stageloader, and emulsion system.

"In the present study, the effect of organic/inorganic (hybrid) polyacrylamide polymer on fine coal flotation was investigated. Raw coal samples contain about 37% of ash-forming mineral at a feed size of -75 + 38 um were subjected to flotation tests in the presence of in-house synthesized hybrid Al(OH)3-PAM at different polymer dosages and pH values. Results show a significant improvement in both combustible recovery and ash rejection at 1 ppm polymer dosage. Further improvement of combustible recovery was obtained when flotation was performed at pH 5. Interfacial properties of coal particles before and after flotation were examined through electrokinetic (zeta potential) measurements of coal/water slurries. Zeta potential vs. pH curve were established and compared. In the case of raw coal/water slurry, zeta potential-pH curve resembles the ash-forming minerals (silica and clays) more than coal. After Al(OH)3-PAM-assisted flotation, the zeta potential of froth/water slurry shifted to more positive values point which strongly indicates significant removal of ash-forming minerals from coal by Al(OH)3-PAM. INTRODUCTION Coal has been a major commodity in meeting the world energy demand during the past several decades (Milici et al., 2013). According to the international energy agency, global coal demand will continue to increase for the coming decades. With increasing world population, the global electricity demand would also increase as more people would get access to basic electricity especially in developing countries (Maggio & Cacciola, 2012). Due to this increase in energy consumption, operations in coal mining and beneficiation processes have been highly mechanized to meet the demands. This mechanization has increased the quantity of raw fine coal particles produced which contain high amount of ash-forming mineral matter (slimes). Aplan et al., have reported that the major constituents of ash-forming minerals in U.S.A coal are clay minerals such as kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite (Aplan, 1997). Conventional froth flotation for fine coal cleaning suffers mainly from two major problems: 1) Low recovery of ultrafine coal particles due to slime coating by ash-forming minerals, and 2) The lack of selectivity, which results in the flotation of middlings and entrainment of mineral fines in the froth (Polat et al., 2003). Slime coating on both valuable and air bubbles have been proposed to explain the observed reduction in flotation recovery especially when fine grinding is required. In this case mineral matter may be degraded to extremely fine or colloidal sizes thereby creating difficulty in the water clarification process such as flotation. Slimes inhibit bubble-particle attachment, and increases reagent consumption due to the increase in solid/liquid interfacial area, resulting in low coal recovery."

OPEN STOPING An open stope is an underground cavity from which the initial ore has been mined. Caving of the opening is prevented (at least temporarily) by support from the unmined ore or waste left in the stope, in the form of pillars, and the stope walls (also called ribs or abutments). In addition to this primary support system of open stoping, some secondary support may also be required using rockbolts, reinforcing rods, split pipes, or shotcrete to stabilize the rock surface immediately adjacent to the opening. The secondary reinforcement procedure does not preclude the method classified as open stoping. There are many forms of open-stope mining used to extract the initial material from a mine. Having once established that the mineral and waste rock are competent enough to use an open-stoping method, and assuming that the reserve is not classified as gassy, the Form which the method will take is primarily determined by the dip and thickness of the reserve. How these two factors affect the selection of the open-stope mining is discussed in a later chapter. At this point it will suffice to say that the classification of the open-stopes mining system which follows is based on whether dry&apos; broken materials flows by gravity or whether it must be moved by nongravity methods where energy must be supplied to move the material. Room-and Pillar-Mining Room-and-pillar mining is an open-stoping method where mining progresses in a nearly horizontal or low angle direction by opening multiple stopes or rooms, leaving solid material to act as pillars to support the vertical load. Since the direction of excavation (angle of dip) is below that which would cause the dry material to flow by gravity to a drawpoint or gathering point, the material must be loaded in the room where it was extracted and transported to a point where it will flow, either by gravity or mechanical means, to a central gathering point to be taken out of the mine. This is an important aspect of room-and-pillar mining which differentiates the system from other open-stope mining methods which rely heavily upon gravity to transport ore from where it was broken to a lower elevation, usually through a drawpoint. There are many variations of the method which go by a number of names in local districts: breast stoping, breast-and-bench stoping, board-and-pillar, stall-and-pillar, and panel-and-pillar are all basically open-stope room-and-pillar mining. In some instances detailed stope planning is almost nonexistent; i.e., the operator simply follows the visual pay values, leaves pillars only where necessary, and tries to locate them in the zones of lower value. This method of mining is as old as the beginning of underground mining itself, dating back thousands of years. Early in the history of mining in this country, the term "gophering" was used to describe this method (Peek 1941). The term is appropriate, for it brings to mind the exact results of this type of system-a random and irregular room-and-pillar mine. In other instances where the mineral values are consistent both in physical dimensions and quality, the mine layout can be planned to the last detail, resulting in a uniform room-and-pillar mine. Coal, trona, gilsonite, potash, oil shale, salt, limestone, and sandstone mines can usually follow such a system. Today, most metal mines using a room-and-pillar operation try to mine as regular a pattern as possible but deviation in height, width, thickness, dip, and grade of the ore results in comparable deviation in the mine plan. Variations of the Room-and-pillar System It is necessary to briefly describe some of the many variations of the room-and-pillar system of mining, enabling the reader to fully explore the concepts and become familiar with the terminology used before going on to the details of mine design. Full-Face Slicing: If in the process of opening the rooms the total vertical extent of the mineral values of the particular seam or strata are extracted from the advance of one vertical face, the term used to describe this is full-face slicing. This face is also known as the "breast." There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the roof (back) to be mined later. To be able to extract the full-face height in one pass, the mining equipment must obviously be designed to reach as high as the back. In an Appalachian coal mine, this may be all of 660.4 mm (26 in.); for a future oil shale property it might be 15.24 m (50 ft). Normally, however, in a majority of mines where the mining face gets over 6.09 to 6.7 m (20 to 22 ft), the tendency is to divide the face into more than one pass. Over this height, it becomes difficult to properly see and remove loose rock from the back with a hand "mining bar." Where the process of taking down loose rock has become mechanized, higher full-face mining can be safely practiced. Most eastern and midwestern coal seams and western uranium, trona, and potash seams in the United States are easily reached in a single face; many limestone, lead, and zinc mines must resort, at least in part, to "multiple-slicing" to remove all the minerals of value. Multiple Slicing (also known as multiple-pass mining): In many cases it is not practical to carry the full vertical height of the mining horizon as a full face. The face is divided into parts known as the breast, bench, and/or brow. From 2013–2017, there were over 1,120 documented injuries, including fourteen fatalities, from ground falls in underground mines in the United States (MSHA 2017). The majority of these ground-fall injuries were not caused by a major roof collapse, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Roof screen can significantly reduce the number of these injuries and has been widely used in underground coal mines for surface control. Because of the potential of reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is further evaluating the performance characteristics of welded-wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program using the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in NIOSH’s Bruceton Research Center Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. The load-displacement characteristics of an 8-ft x 12-ft area of 8-gauge welded-wire screen were evaluated using a test frame designed for testing multiple load-pull locations. In previous tests, load-pull contact was always in the center of the bolted screen section. In this study, larger pull contact areas are used to simulate roof falls. The information obtained in this and similar studies can be used to better understand the loading behavior and surface control capability of roof screen in underground mines. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The large majority of ground-fall injuries are caused by falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Various controls are currently being used in mines to control this surface rock, including the use of wire roof screen. In mines where wire roof screen has been installed, injuries from rock falls have been reduced dramatically (Robertson and Hinshaw, 2001). Roof screen has the potential to prevent hundreds of injuries caused by the fall of small rocks between permanent roof supports (Compton et al., 2007). Because of this potential for reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is evaluating the performance characteristics of welded-wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program in the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in NIOSH’s Bruceton Research Center Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. Previous tests to evaluate the performance characteristics of various types of screen have been conducted by the University of Alberta (Tannant, 2001). In this study, the load-displacement properties of welded-wire, chain-link, and expanded-metal mesh were measured by performing full-scale pull tests. A flat steel plate was pulled through a screen test sample that was bolted to a special test frame while the pulling force and mesh displacement were measured. These tests established the general load-displacement behavior of the screen. Peak load capacities and stiffness were determined for each screen type, showing how welded-wire mesh has a much stiffer initial loading response, whereas chain-link and expanded-metal mesh have large displacement capabilities and exhibit significant post-peak ductility.

The process of flotation is an extremely important solids separation technique employed in a wide variety of industrial process applications. Froth flotation is practiced in the coal industry to recover fines produced during the mining and cleaning of coal. A recent review article by Aplan (1) covers the processing variables encountered in the flotation of coal and the variety of chemicals and operating conditions which affect recovery. Numerous engineering and scientific studies have been performed with the goal of providing semifundamental laws of flotation behavior for improved screening of flotation chemicals, better equipment scale-up factors, etc. Often the results of such work are expressed in the form of mathematical models (e.g. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) which are potentially useful for evaluating (simulating) on paper such alternatives as possibles process operating or configuration changes, the effects of ore and reagent changes, etc. It appears to be commonly accepted that a complete scientific/engineering characterization of flotation is immensely complicated and not sufficiently developed at the present to accurately predict (or understand) many important industrial facets of flotation. Thus, one is often reduced to detailed experimental characterization in both the laboratory and plant in order to fully evaluate flotation changes or alternatives. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a method of batch laboratory data characterization that is useful in evaluating flotation chemical reagents including froth flotation of coal. The approach consists of running a series of time-recovery curves in a batch float cell followed by the computer curve fitting of this data to a series of mathematical models based on semi-physical reasoning. The unknowns or parameters of these models are then optimally chosen so as to best fit the experimental data. It has been found in both coal and mineral systems that changes in reagent type, concentration, system pH, grind, etc. cause very consistent and logical changes to

LKAB&apos;s ores have specific mineralogical properties that make them especially suitable for the production of super-grade concentrates. Conditions are particularly good for this purpose at Malmberget, where a concentrate for high-purity sponge iron production has been produced for many years. Until 1978 the approximate assay was 71.2 % Fe and 0.45 % SiO2. Since then the assays have been improved by process modifications to approximately 71.5 % Fe and 0.20 % SiO2. Scope exists for still further improvement. In recent years the production of fractioned concentrates has been started. The material lies within the size range 74-125 µm and the approximate chemical analysis is 71.6 % Fe and 0.30 % SiO2. Other special products are under discussion. The Malmberget ores are also suitable for the production of high-purity direct reduction pellets with a SiO2 content below 1 %.

"Rapid population growth and scarcity of space have led many developed cities to bury supply facilities. In line with this, utility tunnels have been employed in Korea since the 1970s. However, approximately 70% of structures were installed more than 20 years ago, in response to the issue of ageing, tunnel enlargement has been proposed. The aim of this study is to investigate geo-mechanical behavior due to tunnel enlargement. Tunnel enlargement methods have been researched to suggest a optimal method. A finite element analysis is conducted to evaluate ground behavior by the expansion of internal space. Vertical displacement and settlement trough width are investigated according to ground stiffness and different enlargement size. It was determined that displacement is affected by the enlargement size and ground stiffness. Based on the deformation results obtained from the numerical analysis, it is possible to predict ground behavior and stability upon tunnel enlargement. INTRODUCTION Various infrastructures such as electric lines, communication lines, gas pipes, and water pipes are jointly accommodated by utility tunnels. These utility tunnels improve the aesthetics of urban areas and help ensure stable supply. The first utility tunnel in Korea was adopted in 1978 and new tunnels are still being installed with the development of new suburb cities. Nevertheless, about 70% of the utility tunnels were installed over 20 years ago and they are still being used through ongoing repair. Moreover, 90% of utility tunnels were installed before 1995. With aging of the nation’s utility tunnels various problems such as concrete deterioration and scarcity of capacity have arisen. As solution, reconstruction has been considered. Reconstruction can enlarge space and improve the performance by replacing existing structures. For reconstruction, two routes have been proposed: underground excavation and cut and cover. In order to avoid traffic problems caused by road occupation and civil appeals during construction projects, underground excavation is the more attractive option. Tunnel enlargement methods have been classified (Seo et al., 2008; An et al 2013) and major considerations during tunnel enlargement have been outlined (Beak et al., 2007). Enlargement construction cases on road tunnels around the world were introduced (Kim et al., 2012) and the deformation curve during tunnel expansion was proposed to investigate the range of protection that should be offered (Kim et al., 2008; Beak et al., 2011). However, tunnel enlargement technology is limited to road tunnels and railway tunnels. Hence, a study on shallow box tunnel enlargement is required for practical application."

The inhalation of dust has been a problem in the mining industry since antiquity. Crystalline silica is now known to be the cause of silicosis, a form of pneumoconiosis that is associated with excessive exposure to respirable particles in some mining and industrial environments. Crystalline silica was reviewed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 1986 and classified as a Group 2A, Probably Carcinogenic to Humans in Volume 42 and Supplement 7 of the IARC Monographs (1987). In 1996, IARC reviewed additional literature and studies published in the intervening decade and recommended that quartz and cristobalite, two polymorphs of crystalline silica, be listed as Group 1, Carcinogenic to Humans. Their recommendations and reclassification were published in 1997 in IARC Monographs 68.[2] In both Monographs, IARC classified amorphous silicas as Group 3, Inadequate Evidence for Carcinogenicity to Humans.

Merrill-Crowe is the primary process used for the concentration and purification of silver in a cyanide solution. The Langmuir Adsorption model for silver recovery in a cyanide solution was used for the study. The maximum adsorption capacity was 6.19 mmol/g for silver. This model properly adjusts the experimental results of the adsorption equilibrium with high correlation coefficients, which also favors the formation of a single layer of molecules adsorbed for the silver in the electrocoagulation- generated species. The thermodynamic parameters ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS were estimated, and it was found that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. For the kinetic study, the Lagergren second-order equation was used to study the adsorption speed. To characterize the solids coming from the electrocoagulation, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used; the results of this study suggest that silver is present in aluminite, hydroniumjarosite, and alunogen.

Niagara Mohawk, like other northern coal users, has long experienced increased costs during winter months as a consequence of handling frozen coal. These costs include operating labor, maintenance labor and materials, equipment rental, fuel for thawing, demurrage, carrying costs for excess coal inventory and substitution of higher cost electrical generation for lost production capacity. In the winter of 1978-79, limited trials of several coal freeze conditioning agents were made to determine whether these would provide a cost-effective means of reducing the problems of handling frozen coal. Since these trials were generally effective, the Coal Purchasing Department arranged that all rail coal received during the 1979-80 winter from early December to mid March would be treated at the mines during loading. Inasmuch as the treatment costs are themselves appreciable and our various coal suppliers made a variety of choices of chemical supplier and equipment for application, an attempt was made to evaluate the unloading performance of each train received at the two generating stations which use coal as an aid in the future optimization of the use of freeze conditioning agents. These stations also receive coal by truck but this coal is not treated because of the short hauling time. The C.R. Huntley Station in Tonawanda, NY has a capacity of 800MW and burns about 5000 tons of coal per day during the winter months. The coal is primarily from central and western Pennsylvania but one source in southern Kentucky is also used regularly. Most of the Pennsylvania coal is washed and the fines are thermally dried. The coal is delivered in unit trains made up of mixed cars of 60, 75, and 90 ton capacity. Time between loading and arrival at the station averaged five days and ranged from three to eleven during the 1979-80 winter season.

The final 1995 figures on industrial sand and gravel have not yet been compiled by the US Geological Survey (USGS). There is usually about a nine-month lag time in receiving and compiling this information. However, USGS estimates that domestic production of industrial sand and gravel will increase about 4% to 28.2 Mt(31 million st). The average unit price is expected to increase as well. The top five producers during 1995 were Unimin, US Silica, Fairmount Minerals, Oglebay Norton and Morie Co. Glass manufacturing for containers, automobiles and buildings was mixed during 1995. Containers, the largest consumer of silica sand, remained steady, with regional increases. However, silica use in glass containers face increased competition from plastic and recycled glass (cullet). It was reported that the Pepsi Cola announced plans to replace glass containers with plastic during 1996.

The availability, cost and use of fuel and electricity for the cement industry is difficult to predict with a great degree of accuracy because the historical pattern of factors affecting energy was disrupted during the years 1972, 1973 and 1974. Forecasting is both an art and science and is based on .the premise that the best indicator of the future is the past. Statistical data is used to guide economists and businessmen in their predictions of the future. Even though the energy picture is changing, it is believed that electricity and fuel will be available for the cement industry in the foreseeable future, and this energy will be more costly in relation to the other items that are part of the manufacturing costs for portland cement.
