Zirconium is the 20th most abundant element in the Earth?s crust and it most often occurs in the form of silicate (as zircon), less often in the oxide form (as baddeleyite or caldesite). Historically, the world?s production of zircon was entirely derived from mining and processing beach sands or heavy mineral sands that were being exploited primarily for their titanium content, i.e., to generate TiO2 feedstocks that would be used for making titanium pigments and, to a lesser extent, titanium metal. Zircon was then regarded as a byproduct, with the sharply fluctuating prices typical of a commodity where the supply is essentially involuntary and not truly responsive to market demand. However, in recent years, zircon has shown considerable mining investment appeal in its own right. Projects have been planned ? and some have already come to fruition ? based mainly on the zircon potential of the deposit. Booming Chinese demand for zircon to meet the requirements of the ceramic and zirconium chemical sectors has been a major factor causing zircon prices (f.o.b. Australia) to surge from US$674/t ($611/st) at [ ] the end of 2005 to beyond US$2,400/t ($2,177/st) by the end of 2011.

Mill drums are essential equipment in various industries for the comminution of materials. To optimize their design and operation for efficient and cost-effective processing, it is necessary to understand the behavior of the mill drum under various operating conditions. This study investigates the behavior of a mill drum using a combination of experimental and numerical methods. The factors that can influence the behavior of the mill drum, such as the size and shape of the mill, grinding media, rotational speed, filling level, and material properties, are discussed. Experimental methods can be limited in obtaining measurements of internal processes, so numerical methods such as the Discrete Element Method (DEM) are also used to simulate the behavior of the mill drum. In this study, the experimental measurements of the motion of the grinding media are obtained using computer vision methods, and the numerical simulations are calibrated using the experimental results. A designed experiment approach is used to evaluate the performance of the mill drum under various operating conditions. The results of this study can be useful for the design and optimization of mill drums to achieve better performance and energy efficiency.

The variables involved in a complex process like flotation can be classified as follows: a. Disturbance variables - which are undesired properties of the process input which affect the value of the process output but which are not subject to adjustment. They are the result of changes in the properties of the feed, like changes in head grade, flow rate, fineness of grind, etc. b. Manipulated variables (sometimes referred to as process variables or control variables) -which are those that are adjusted - reagent addition, aeration, pulp level - in order to compensate for the disturbances in the properties of feed. c. Performance variables (sometimes referred to as controlled variables) -which are those whose values measure the performance of the process. They are properties of the process output such as grade and recovery. The function of a control system is to maintain the process performance equal to the control objective in spite of the disturbances by adjusting the manipulated variables. Attempts at developing automatic control systems for mineral processing operations date back to the thirties and in many of these attempts the results were not surprisingly poor and un-stable. The poor results brought indifference and suspicion towards automatic control on the part of operators and management. The reasons for the apparent failure of these attempts were two-fold: a. the lack of adequate understanding of the behavioural responses of the process from the control point of view, and b. the lack of reliable control instrumentation which could withstand the harsh environment in mineral dressing plants. Many operators had accepted the fact that control of mineral dressing could be best conducted manually. In the case of flotation circuits, control had been virtually based on the skill and experience of operators particularly their ability to identify and rectify poor flotation performance aided by results from the laboratory (chemical) analysis of regularly collected samples from strategic points in the circuit which are at best, hourly collected samples.

Most statistical measures of mineral exploration continued downward in 1986. Prospects in 1987, however, appear to have brightened for exploration as the overall economic health of the mineral industry improved. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) survey of US and Canadian firms documents the marked decline in US mineral exploration since the early 1980's. From 1981 through 1986, the total exploration expenditure by US firms declined by more than 73% (Fig. 1). Exploration expenditures by US firms declined by 66%%. US based professional exploration staffs were slashed by 70% (Fig. 2). Also, many firms have written off some reserves because of weak markets or have not delineated new reserves to replace production. The Canadian government reported that between 1981 and 1986 Canadian molybdenum re¬serves had declined by 30%, lead and zinc reserves by 20%, and nickel and copper reserves by 15%. The SEG survey also shows the immediate impact of the decline in the dollar on US exploration expenditures abroad. Between 1981 and 1986 the share of the exploration dollar spent by US firms outside of the country declined by nearly one-half and exploration acreage abroad declined by 69%. The downward trend of the last six years may finally be near the end as a leaner and more efficient minerals industry starts to gear up for a period of increased activity. An industry survey reported to Mine Development Bimonthly (Metals Economics Group) indicates that mining firms were expected to increase exploration expenditures in 1987 by at least 10% above 1986 levels. Worldwide expenditures for 1987 by companies covered by the report were expected to top $800 million. It is the first time since 1984 that an increase in exploration expenditures was expected. Also, the US Bureau of Land Management reported a 30% increase in new mining claims for fiscal year 1987 over fiscal year 1986. The bulk of the increase in claims was in states having intense gold exploration, particularly Washington and Oregon. Much of the optimism is undoubtedly due to the increases in metal prices that occurred in 1987. Some of these increases include gold, average price up about 20%; copper, average price up 24%; aluminum, average price up 26%; and nickel, average spot price up 20%. The SEG survey shows precious and base metals accounting for 89% of the exploration expenditures in the US in 1986, up 52% from 1981. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that 80% of US exploration activity in 1986 was directed entirely at gold (1986 Minerals Yearbook). Worldwide exploration plans indicate the continued dominance of gold exploration. New programs were announced for Ghana, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Major new exploration programs were also launched for lead-zinc sulfides in Morocco, platinum and palladium in northwest Brazil, rare earth minerals in Greenland, diamonds in Indonesia, and heavy minerals off-shore Australia. Industries in general and the mining industry in particular have become more safe than ever before. However, there is a need to increase the search for the causes of mining work-related injuries and to contribute to their reduction through job design, work procedures, and worker training. Mine accident and hazard control has to be practiced in a manner which is consistent with the overall objectives of the mine management, among which are the optimum allocation and effective utilization of the resources. The purposes of this paper are to (i) review the role risk analysis in safety management with references from mining and other industries; (ii) discuss the risk measures appropriate for injury analysis; (iii) present a set of analytical tools to injury experience data in under-ground coal mines; (i v) apply these tools on case study example; (v) discuss the results of the case study; and (vi) amplify the application limitations and the future research needs.

"On January 9, 2014, a large chemical spill occurred on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, WV. Within hours, the potable water supply for more than 300,000 people was contaminated, and the incident captured national headlines for weeks. Although the primary chemical, crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol, or MCHM, is deemed nonhazardous, the impacts of the spill are significant – with all stakeholders, including the public, members of industry, and relevant government agencies experiencing losses. This case highlights the need for a more proactive approach to environmental management, shifting from crisis control and remediation to crisis prevention and risk management. INTRODUCTION On the morning of January 9, 2014, approximately 10,000 gallons of crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol (MCHM) leaked from a 48,000-gallon storage tank sitting on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, West Virginia (WVDEP, 2014; CSB, 2014). MCHM is a chemical commonly used in preparation of fine coal, and is deemed nonhazardous in terms of transportation and storage regulations and also toxicity (CDC, 2014a). Freedom Industries, Inc., a producer and vendor of specialty chemical products, had acquired the storage facility where the spill occurred from Etowah River Terminal, LLC just a few weeks prior in December 2013 (WVDEP, 2014; Freedom, 2005). The direct cause of the spill was ultimately determined to be two small holes in the base of the 76-year-old tank, which were created due to corrosion damage (Bauerlein & McWhirter, 2014). The spill site was located just over a mile upstream from the intake of a municipal water treatment facility operated by West Virginia American Water (WVAW), which serves a population of 300,000 across nine counties in central West Virginia (CDC, 2014a). In a matter of hours, the leaked MCHM made its way through the treatment facility and into the water of nearby homes and businesses, where its strong smell was noticed almost immediately. On the evening of the spill, WVAW concluded that its conventional treatment processes, which include carbon filters to remove a variety of contaminants from water, were not capable of fully removing the MCHM and a “Do Not Use” order was issued for all customers (WVAW, 2014a). With little information readily available regarding the potential human health effects of MCHM, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quickly issued an advisory ruling that set a maximum screening level of 1 ppm for safe drinking water (CDC, 2014a). Based on this recommendation, the “Do Not Use” order remained in effect for a total of eight days, until January 17, when the WVAW distribution water was confirmed to have MCHM concentrations below this level (WVAW, 2014a). However, due to the pungent odor of the chemical, its presence was still recognizable in the WVAW facility and in consumers’ tap water after the order was lifted (Manuel, 2014). Recent studies have shown that the chemical can be detected in water at concentrations as low as 0.55 ppb by individuals experienced in odor identification (Rosen et al., 2014); and even individuals with no such training can detect pure MCHM at just 7 ppb (WVTAP, 2014). The fact that this chemical can be sensed at such low levels – indeed far below those considered safe – undoubtedly added to growing public concern. In response to numerous complaints and demands, WVAW continued flushing the treatment facility and pipes until February 25 when MCHM levels were measured below 2 ppb (WVAWb, 2014), and eventually replaced the affected filter media (WVAWc, 2014)."

This article is a review of previous discussions about underground mining method selection and classification with the purpose to clearly define and classify the two groups of variables (indicators) involved in the mining selection process: key deposit indicators (KDIs) and key mining method indicators (KMIs). This paper provides a simple and clear approach for the classification and selection of a feasible underground mining method based on a predetermined set of favorable deposit characteristics, which are defined as key deposit indictors (KDIs). This article also gives a summary of the key advantages and disadvantages associated with every underground mining method based on their key mining indicators (KMIs). The selection method given in this paper is based on defining field KDIs and comparing them to the KDIs that are favorable to every considered mining method. By cross validating a matrix of favorable KDIs, the paper presents a simple approach to rank several underground mining methods using a scale from favorable to less favorable accordingly to the ore deposit characteristics (KDIs). KMIs are used to further complement KDI rankings by analyzing every method’s KMI performance based on the expected productivity of the mining operation being considered. To further assist the reader through the selection process, this paper gives basic sketches representing each of the primary underground mining methods discussed in this paper. Each method is given using the same 3D isometric view as spatial reference to assist the reader with visual interpretation and comparison between methods.

Federal and State sulfur oxide emission and ambient air quality regulations have been implemented to fulfill the requirements of the Federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1970. Primary and secondary air quality standards have been established at levels considered necessary to assure the protection of the health and welfare of the public. Standards of performance under this Act have been established to control the rate of sulfur oxide emissions from individual sources so as to protect and to improve the quality of the Nation's air. The new source standards of performance were made rigorous for large coal burning stationary sources. This has had a severe impact on the electric utilities that operate the coal fired steam electric plants which are the largest consumers of the Nation's coal production. States have taken different approaches in State Implementation Plans (SIPS) as approved by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency. Some states, such as Pennsylvania, have chosen to permit moderate SO2 emission rates from existing sources which are not in critical air basins. All are required to meet primary and secondary air quality standards and to limit sulfur oxide emissions from new large stationary sources to a minimum of 1.2 LBS of S02/MMBTU fired. This re- quires a fuel sulfur percentage of about 0.7 for a 12,000 BTU/lb coal. In an effort to develop strategies and technologies to conform to performance standards while continuing and hopefully expanding the utilization of the Nation's coal supply, the electric utilities, the Federal and State regulatory agencies, and other industries and government agencies are considering several alternatives. 1. Natural low sulfur coal 2. Flue gas desulfurization - (FGD) non-regenerative and regenerative 3. Coal gasification 4. Liquefaction and solvent refined coal 5. Fluidized bed combustion 6. Chemical coal cleaning 7. Physical coal cleaning Of these options, only the first and the last can be considered to be widely used in full commercial practice at this time. FGD has certainly demonstrated technical and operating feasibility and is close to being in full commercial practice but it remains to be seen if the large systems under construction are economically and environmentally optimum.

In this work, the possibility of intensifying the cementation process in stirred vessels was studied by using the perforated baffles as turbulence promoters; the cementation reaction of Cu+2 on Zn was selected as a model. Zn was used in the form of a sheet lining the inner wall of an agitated vessel. Parameters considered are initial concentration of Cu+2, solution temperature, impeller rotation speed, and impeller geometry. Within the present range of parameters studied, the rate of cementation was found to increase with increasing initial concentration of Cu+2, solution temperature, and impeller rotation speed. At the same rotational speed, a flat turbine gave a higher rate of cementation than a 45° pitched turbine. The present suggested that baffles’ geometry gave superior performance in terms of mass transfer of copper cementation compared to the conventional baffle geometry. All parameters that affect the rate of cementation were correlated in the form of dimensionless equations suitable for the design and performance prediction of the agitated vessel. Potential applications of the obtained results in the field of hydrometallurgical processes and wastewater treatment were discussed.

Application of teleoperated and automated (or ?autonomous?) mobile equipment in underground metal mines is a promising avenue for overcoming some of the challenges facing mine operators. These include, but are not limited to, the issues related to safety and health of underground workers, better use of the shift time leading to increased productivity, skilled manpower shortages, and remoteness of some mine sites. Autonomous load-haul-dump machines and trucks offer several benefits over man-operated ones, but their use at their full capacity is a challenging and complex task. This paper makes an overview of commercially available equipment and systems and their applications. It examines factors affecting adversely availability, utilization, and production efficiency of autonomous vehicles and compares them to conventional man-operated machines. Technical and operational aspects are discussed and their criticality is analyzed. Based on that, recommendations concerning means and measures that may help raise operational effectiveness are given. It is stressed that due to a scarcity of publicly available information on the performance and cost of autonomous loading and haulage operations, more field studies and in-depth analysis are needed.

Coleman Quartz Inc. has a long history as the sole U.S. producer of lascas for the cultured quartz growing industry based on its unique deposits in Arkansas. Since 1989 the company has also been producing metallurgical grade silica for the ferrosilicon industry from a deposit of unusually pure Arkansas novaculite. This paper chronicles Coleman's trans-formation of an abandoned railroad ballast quarry into a generator of $1.5 million in annual sales to a nontraditional novaculite market. Potential additional applications for this high quality silica rock will also be mentioned.

Since 1950, rotary-drilled, large-diameter holes, "big holes", with depths to over 300 feet and diameters of over 30 inches have become numerous and widespread. Fifty such holes have been drilled for access shafts to LPG mined caverns, Over 70 holes have been drilled for various other commercial activities. Over 150 holes have been drilled by the AEC for atomic testing purposes. These holes have ranged up to 300-inch diameters with 1600-foot depths, 120-inch diameters with 570-foot depths, and 72-inch diameters with 4800-foot depths. Equipment is now available to drill a wide range of ?big holes? for varied requirements. At least a dozen drilling contractors are participating or have participated in the drilling of "big holes". The accompanying tables show pertinent historical, technical and economic data on over 250 holes. The illustrations to be presented concurrently with this paper show the various equipment and accessories now in use. (See Appendix I for captions of illustrations.)

It is becoming evident that traditional methods of econometric analysis are inadequate in estimating-the long-run supply of minerals. Econometrics is limited to extracting estimates from observations of the theory predicts that the least cost deposits will be exploited first.1 The estimation of parameters from past data then must lead to biased projections of the future. Mining conditions in the future will be worse than in the past and it is the impact of the future conditions on cost that we need to know. In this paper we present a methodology for dealing with this problem. We estimate a "cumulative cost" function that yields the long-run marginal cost of mining as a function of cumulative output produced over time.2 This is relatively easy to do for coal mining in the United States where exploration for new deposits is not a major factor in supply. The first step of the procedure relates cost to the rate of output and to the geological conditions of the mine. The second step combines geological information on remaining deposits with the cost function to yield the cumulative cost function. A central theme of both these steps is the interaction of economics with geology. The best deposits are selected first and in each step of the estimation allowance must be made for this fact. The problem of depletion is part of the general problem of structural change. The change through depletion in the nature of the exploitable mineral stock is only one factor that calls for an analysis sensitive to the changing circumstances of the industry. Underground metal mining involves many challenges. Economic slowdown, tough international competition and sometimes volatile metal prices put constant pressure on mine operators to increase productivity and to reduce production cost. At the same time, countries such as Canada, the United States and Australia are experiencing skilled labor shortages that might even stall development of certain mine projects. Furthermore, some stages of underground production take place in particularly hazardous environments where the safety and health of miners is at risk. Automation of some processes in underground mining is one of the promising avenues to alleviate some of these problems. Loading and haulage are among the most critical operations and areas where implementation of autonomous vehicles has been targeted. However, although health and safety issues are a primary driver to opt for automation, the latter should ensure an acceptable level of productivity and pro?tability. With this in mind, this article focuses on the factors affecting operational effectiveness of autonomous underground loading and haulage equipment and the means to maximize it.

Exploration of new resources and development of new equipment and designs are an ever changing facet of mining. New equipment to handle specialized operations is being developed and new techniques for its use explored. One such system is reviewed. Another is a potential system for handling the thinner stray coal seams between the more profitable thick seams. The availability of federal coal leases in the West is reviewed and current planning discussed. Gulf Coast lignites have been of much interest in recent months and are overviewed.

This paper presents sulfur isotope data obtained for the deposits and country rocks of the Bailadores and Aroa Mining District, Venezuela. The study is a part of an extensive geochemical investigation of the mineralized belts that has as their aim the elucidation of the genesis of ores. The Bailadores deposits are located at about 600 Km. west-southwest of Caracas, or about 10 Km. southeast of the Town of Bailadores, Merida State (Fig. 1). The mine concession is held by the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons (De Lima I, De Lima II and La Cascade areas). In a straight distance the mine is about 90 Km. southwest of Merida, the capital of Mérida State. From Mérida to Bailadores, through La Victoria and Tovar, it takes 3 hour by car. From Bailadores to the mine site it is about 40 minutes by jeep. The Aroa deposits are located at 4 Km. east of Aroa Village, Yaracuy State, about 220 Km. west of Caracas. It is 83 Km. from San Felipe, the capital of Yaracuy State to the mine (Fig.2). The mine is about 600 m above sea level, situated on the northern foot of the E-W trending Andes. The topography of the mine are shows a mature stage and is somewhat rugged. As the climate is warm and humid, the area is thicky covered with jungle.

Since 1980 a number of significant changes have been introduced at Palabora in an effort to off-set the effects of reduced product price and increased unit cost of inputs. These changes and improvements include major equipment rationalization programs, the introduction of trolley assisted truck haulage, adoption of a sophisticated computerized truck control system, pit design enhancements, improved drilling practices, use of emulsion explosives and the installation of an in-pit crushing and conveying system. The various changes, their effect on the operation and their contribution to cost reduction and improved productivity at Palabora are considered.

Although rates of pneumoconiosis in coal miners have declined substantially in the United States since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, new cases continue to occur, including cases of rapidly progressive disease. In contrast, Australia's underground coal mining industry has reported few new cases of pneumoconiosis for more than 20 years. Mortality from coal workers' pneumoconiosis in official health statistics and the prevalence of pneumoconiosis among miners screened in X-ray surveillance programs are also lower in Australia. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was requested by both industry and labor stakeholders to examine this issue, with the ultimate aim of reducing the rate of pneumoconiosis among U.S. coal miners. A number of factors, including coal dust exposure, silica exposure and coal rank were examined as potential contributors to the above noted differences. Comparison of coal rank data from each country did not illuminate the issue. Air sample data from the coal mining industries in both countries show that coal dust levels in Australian mines are somewhat higher than those reported in similar U.S. mines; however, quartz exposure for Australian miners is lower than for many U.S. miners. If quartz is contributing to the greater number of cases of pneumoconiosis in the United States, more effective dust control measures, as well as an independent exposure standard for respirable quartz in coal mining, should be implemented to reduce this potentially disabling condition.

"The success of a tunnel project relies on many factors, but one of the most important is also the most overlooked: coordination by all parties involved during the design stages. This is particularly true of segment design and TBM design. Tunnel lining with segmental rings is usually designed according to the standards of reinforced concrete construction based on a given GBR. However, for TBM tunneling, the determination of loads during ring erection, advance of the TBM, earth pressure, and bedding of the articulated ring are all part of the tunnel lining design as well. TBM design can be heavily affected by the segment arrangement, dimension, and weight, but these are usually given as a fixed input to the TBM manufacturer—a process that can cause unnecessary complications. The authors propose that the industry evaluate the process as it stands. In order to find the optimum balance between lining design and TBM cost and operational workflow, both designs should be finalized concurrently. This requires coordination between the TBM manufacturer and segment designer from the early stages. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the influence of the segment lining design on TBM cost and performance, and to provide commentary on existing design guidelines to optimize lining and TBM procurement. INTRODUCTION The conventional project setup for tunnel lining design and the design and manufacture of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) should be coordinated in a timelier manner. It is widely acknowledged that the design of segments must consider the forces exerted by TBM rams during tunnel construction, but other inputs are most frequently provided to the TBM manufacturer as fixed parameters to design around. This paper describes other important factors in TBM design that impact not only the interaction with the segments, but also the construction of the tunnel in terms of overall production and even safety. For example, the segment width and tapering have direct influence on shield body length and thrust cylinder size. Furthermore, TBM geometry can also affect the backup (trailing gear) layout and length."

"The earliest known use of cobalt was to make blue glass in Mesopotamia before 2000 B.C.E. Since then, innovations across many diverse industrial sectors transformed cobalt into an essential commodity for contemporary society. The physical and chemical properties of the element cobalt and its alloys and compounds make them indispensable for a variety of applications, including aircraft engines, hybrid electric vehicles, machine tools, missile guidance systems, petroleum refining and smartphones. As a major industrialized nation, the United States is a leading consumer of cobalt and cobalt-containing products. However, with few exceptions, U.S. cobaltcontaining ore deposits are of low cobalt grade. Historically, U.S. cobalt mine and refinery output have not met domestic cobalt demand. As a result, U.S. cobalt chemical and alloy producers need to procure most of their cobalt from the international market, which can become susceptible to supply risk.The 1978 Cobalt Crisis illustrates supply risk. At that time, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) (then known as Zaire) was the world’s leading producer of mined and refined cobalt. An insurgent invasion of the country’s copper-cobalt mining region during a period of high cobalt demand and low producer inventories caused a temporary supply shortage in the international market. The monthly average cobalt spot price increased from $18/ kg ($8/lb) before the crisis to $99/kg ($45/lb) seven months later. The high price and concern about potential disruptions in supply prompted manufacturers to reduce or substitute for cobalt where possible, and encouraged increased recovery of cobalt from scrap. The DRC has regained its position as the leading producer of mined cobalt globally and continues to be characterized by high governance risks (U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, 2015; World Bank, undated). This article will present current and historical world cobalt production trends, which can help inform discussion about the variety of international supply chain risks consequential to its trade."
