The replacement of the dry mining method at Guajú Mine by the dredging method was a means of ensuring its feasibility by maintaining the production levels. Dry mining increased the cost of the deposit with the distance and presented a limited mined volume, while the decreasing grade of the deposit led to a production drop. With the new methodology, there was a considerable reduction in unit cost of the mine and an increase in the production level of a deposit with low heavy minerals content.

Continuous developments in tunneling require knowledge transfer between designers and suppliers to optimize the application of support systems. This collaboration allows the designer access to the latest research results, technical innovations, and support specific measurement techniques as well as the supplier?s experiences on recent projects. Project specific requirements determine the information that can be used to increase support system efficiency, advance rate, degree of safety, or decrease costs. This cooperative effort results in not only an unambiguous tender document, but also an optimized design with reduced risk that is coordinated with safe and high performance construction techniques. This paper will address the benefits of an early collaboration to both the design and the specifications in the tender document by using the A3 Hindhead project (UK) as an example.

The objective of flotation models is to predict the recovery rate of minerals from a flotation cell. In this paper a CFD?based flotation models is presented. The model uses first order rate equation, and the collision frequency is estimated using Abrahamson [1] model with input from CFD two-phase simulations. Spatial distributions of dissipation rate and air volume fraction (also called void fraction) are determined by the two-phase hydrodynamic simulations. Knowing these parameters throughout the machine is essential in understanding the effectiveness of different components (rotor, stator or disperser, jets) on the flotation efficiency. Not only the average pulp recovery rate can be estimated but also the regions of high/low recovery rate can be identified. The CFD-based flotation model presented here can be used to determine the dependence of recovery rate constant at any locality within the pulp on particle diameter, particle specific gravity, contact angle, and surface tension.

Minerals contribute to U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels ? from mining and processing to the manufacturing of Anished products. In 2009, the estimated real GDP of the United States decreased by 2.4 percent compared with, and the estimated nominal GDP was about $14.2 trillion (Table 1). Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often reflected in mineral production and consumption rates. In 2009, the continued decline of the housing market was reflected in reductions in the production and consumption of cement, clays, construction sand and gravel, and crushed stone (those mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction). Production of mineral commodities associated with the manufacture of goods for the housing market, such as ceramic tile, heating and air conditioning equipment, paint, plumbing and sanitaryware, roofing, wiring and wallboard also decreased. In order to find the behavior of dewatered unconsolidated strata during the process of injecting water through a borehole, a new type of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system was successfully used for the real-time strain monitoring of unconsolidated strata during a water injection process for a dewatered unconsolidated strata of a coal mine. The unconsolidated strata water injection test was implemented through a borehole at a depth of +115.83 to +135.15m. The employed FBG strain monitoring system and ground water level observation system were installed at the depth in the unconsolidated strata where the water injection was conducted through two different boreholes. The water injection pressures in the test were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3MPa respectively, and the total water injection volume was 4226.84m3. The relationships between the water injection pressures, water injection volume and the strain change of the unconsolidated strata, the stress and strain conditions of the unconsolidated strata before and after water injection, were analyzed. This paper presents the results of these tests, and shows that the dewatering compression of the unconsolidated strata is reduced with increasing water injection pressures and water injection volumes. Comparing the stress-strain conditions before and after water injection, it is found that the stress of the water injection strata is in tension, which confirms the theory that the settlement of the thick unconsolidated strata is directly caused by the reduction of ground water levels. The high sensitivity and stability of the FBG monitoring system used was able to realize the real-time strain monitoring of the water injection process within a deep unconsolidated strata. This FBG monitoring system and the test results presented are very important for understanding further treatment of settlement in unconsolidated strata.

Recent research has shown that froth flotation is not effective at treating fine coals (-28 mesh) containing a large portion of middling particles. Due to their relatively large density differences, middling particles can be separated more efficiently using gravity-based processes. The ability of gravity separators to treat fine particles has been limited by the lack of particle inertia relative to the surface drag forces. However, particle inertia can be enhanced by the application of a centrifugal field. A commercial-scale centrifugal Falcon concentrator capable of treating a mass flow rate of greater than 1 tph continuously has been used to evaluate its feasibility for treating fine coal as an alternative to froth flotation. Tests conducted on a -28 mesh fine coal circuit feed have found the Falcon concentrator to be very effective at cleaning the 28 x 325 mesh size fraction. For an Illinois No. 5 coal sample, the ash content was reduced in the 100 x 325 mesh size fraction from about 18% to 8% while achieving a high combustible recovery value of nearly 97%. In addition, the total sulfur content was substantially decreased from 2.6% to 1.7%. The effects of the critical operating parameters on separation performance have been studied and their values optimized.

The Wolf Creek Upper Narrows Tunnel (Upper Narrows Tunnel) is one of the first major highway tunnel in the United States implementing the use of spray-on membrane for purposes of constructing a double-shell drainage solution between an initial shotcrete lining and a final cast-in-place concrete lining (Figure 1). In the case of the Upper Narrows Tunnel the primary membrane is constructed with a spray-on product manufactured by Degussa, namely Masterseal® 340 FA (MS 340) that has been utilized previously in other tunnel projects. Shotcrete-like in application, but differing in physical properties, MS 340 is now outdated, and is succeeded by Masterseal® 345 (MS 345), a nearly identical product, with improvements in material properties. Tunnel project histories utilizing either MS 340 or MS 345 are discussed and summarized with regard to the respective motives for prompting spray-on membrane selection and the realized benefits resulting from spray-on membrane construction. With an emphasis on the Upper Narrows Tunnel, project summaries discuss details of the aspects of design for spray-on membrane construction methodology as opposed to conventional sheet membrane construction methodologies. It is anticipated that experience gained during the construction of the Upper Narrows Tunnel with respect to other tunnel projects that have utilized spray-on membrane will be of use for future tunnels employing spray-on membrane in drainage solutions.

Extraction of Al(III) from aqueous sulfuric acid solutions into organic Cyanex 272®-carbon tetrachloride systems was investigated from a multi-component mixture containing aluminum, cobalt and nickel. Al(III) extraction efficiency was quantitative with 1.0 M Cyanex 272® in two stages at an aqueous: organic (A:O) phase ratio of 1:1 and an equilibrium pH of 3.2. The stripping of Al(III) from the loaded organic (LO) with different acids indicated sulfuric acid to be the best stripping agent. More than 99% stripping of Al(III) from the LO was achieved using 2 M H2SO4 at an A:O phase ratio of 1:1 in a single stage. The stoichiometry of the extracted species of Al(III) was determined by the slope analysis method. The extraction reaction proceeded via the cation exchange mechanism and the extracted species was assumed to be AlA3?3HA, where HA refers to the dimeric and A the anionic form of the extractant, Cyanex 272®. The extraction of Al(III) was studied in the presence of various ions to ascertain the tolerance limit of individual ions.

Five sewer connections were required to divert Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)from existing outfalls to an old underutilized large diameter brick sewer (the Easterly Interceptor). The connections were part of an on-going CSO control program by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) in the City of Cleveland, Ohio. Each connection was made by pipejacking and hand-mining a fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) pipe through soft glaciolacustrine clays and silts. Jet grouting was utilized to stabilize the soils and fill the voids surrounding the interceptor prior to making the underground connection. Reinforced concrete liners were constructed inside the aging brick sewer to provide structural stability during ground improvements and connection work. The project also involved micro tunneling two approximately400 foot lengths of FRP pipe through soft ground using a slurry pressure balanced machine.

Deep sewer tunnels are required to meet future growth demands of the City of Austin?s down-town redevelopment. The tunnel is 18,000 ft long and varies in finished diameter from 54 inches to 96 inches. The tunnel crosses under Austin?s Town Lake three times and there are four main work shaft sites. Geology, groundwater, foundations, downtown redevelopment, and an active, healthy community put significant constraints on the design. This paper discusses a major underground project for downtown Austin and discusses the risk considerations and the opportunities the design team took toward optimizing the project design for the construction phase.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream acidity is widely used in MIW (mining influenced water). Tailoring pH (a measure of acidity) finds application for controlling key chemistry in both process and waste streams. Traditional lime addition for neutralization and precipitation is most often used but has high reagent costs and results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. A new adaptation of BPS’s patented DEMET™ technology (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform offers a potentially improved and “reagentless” alternative to traditional chemical addition for pH adjustment. Electricity rather than chemical addition utilized in BPS’s proprietary approach controllably tailors target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost processing technique yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. BPS’s “green” approach may yield lower operating (OPEX) and life cycle costs and significant reductions (up to 50%) in sludge generation compared to conventional lime treatment. It can also allow new opportunities to generate revenue via selective recovery of valuable processing byproducts. Specific savings and revenues depend on the target site chemistries, details, and processing goals. A more detailed discussion of the process and its operational principles may be found in Reference One.[1] Here application of the BPS treatment to POx (Pressure Oxidation) leaching as an alternative to traditional chemical addition is examined. An example operation process flow for gold mining is considered.[2] Promising processing points for potentially replacing conventional processes with DEMET are noted. The possibilities for lowering OPEX costs, lessening sludge creation, and capturing various valuable byproducts and residuals are examined. Financial life cycle benefit estimates of the principal gains provided by DEMET application to the example operation are noted. Extension and generalization of the analyses to a wider range of scenarios is explored."

Operation and maintenance of California?s water tunnels is an important factor and vital link in California?s infrastructure. These tunnels are owned and operated by a variety of large and small private and public water and power utility companies, municipal agencies, and irrigation districts. Visionary pioneers such as Michael O?Shaughnessy (San Francisco Hetch Hetchy Water Supply System), William Mulholland (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and Metropolitan Water District of Southern California?s Colorado River Aqueduct), and John Eastwood (Southern California Edison Big Creek Hydroelectric Project) built large and small water supply, irrigation and hydroelectric tunnels, which have supplied environmentally friendly-water supply, renewable electricity, and uninterrupted service to a burgeoning population and economy. This paper introduces these pioneers and describes several case histories and lessons learned during condition assessment and rehabilitation of tunnels providing enlightenment of California?s vital water projects.

Southeast Asian countries cannot maintain their economic growth rate without the development of their mining industries. To make this development as sustainable as possible requires sound fundamentals securing not only economic progress and environment protection but also improvements in occupational safety and health (OSH) for the miners. Mining in South East Asia is still very labor intense and dangerous. Tremendous achievements from world class mining operations in advanced mining countries can be used as role models to improve the status quo of the Southeast Asian countries in OSH management. Know-how transfer, therefore, is a key factor for major improvements. Effects of this transfer based on a multi-level approach will be discussed based on a case study. It describes the transfer from German to Vietnamese hard coal mining industry. Crucial requisites for excellent achievements in OSH in Southeast Asian mining countries are also mentioned.

Catastrophic failures of dams and tailing storage facilities (TSF) have triggered the development of integrated ground monitoring concepts for hazard assessment, risk management and public safety. These concepts are based on knowledge and expertise of persons technically responsible for TSF. The aim is to combine this implicit and explicit knowledge with the data of in-situ- and remote sensors. Risk management for TSF must include a comprehensive monitoring program that integrates data from ground based-, air-borneand satellite-based sensors. Researchers at Technical University Georg Agricola (THGA) in Bochum, and EFTAS, Muenster, Germany, are fusing a variety of sensor data to enhance the capability and performance of TSF monitoring to ensure public safety downstream of TSFs. This paper describes the variety of sensors implemented in numerous research projects. It gives an outlook in terms of planned satellite missions with innovative equipment like hyperspectral sensors. The implementation of the data of these sensors in the analysis will increase the understanding of spatio-temporal impacts of mining activities. Future opportunities are explained by a datacube approach.

Underground stone mine ventilation is characterized by large openings with low resistances. These mines primarily face three challenges: moving adequate volumes of air, controlling and directing the airflow, and planning ventilation systems that work well with production requirements. Given these challenges, this paper examines the data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to determine the extent to which respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and diesel particulate matter (DPM) are an issue in underground stone mines. Out of 522 sampled mines, there were 108 personal samples exceeding the RCS Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) during 2000–2020. DPM were more prevalent than RCS in these mines with 382 personal samples exceeding the DPM PEL out of the 929 mines sampled during 2002–2020. Dilution of DPM is usually the defining parameter for design of mine ventilation systems in largeopening underground stone mines. With this knowledge, focused attention can be directed to these mines so that appropriate prevention and mitigation techniques can be utilized to prevent stone miners’ exposure to RCS and DPM and subsequent respiratory diseases.

GENERAL Tunneling by hand digging is as old as the history of humans. Mechanized tunneling did not begin to replace manual methods until around the beginning of the 19th century(Brunel patent, 1818). It brought with it a higher degree of safety for the workers and a much higher rate of boring. But for any kind of tunneling, an accurate and feasible method of survey must be accomplished during mining. That means, that for each tunnel project the most efficient survey method must be devised. The method to be defined depends on the spatial curve, diameter, speed of tunneling method, purpose of tunnel and contractual accuracy. The final accuracy of a finished tunnel is heavily dependent upon three critical elements: 1. Quality of the above ground survey 2. Tunnel traverse and directional transfer from above ground 3. Guidance for the mining job. Combining The Survey And The Guidance System Since the guidance system (GS) is one of the critical factors in the determination of the tunnel final accuracy, it is necessary to analyze how the directional control and tunnel traverse measurements can be effectively integrated into a GS. Any guidance system, whether manual or high technology, must continually detect and compensate for movement of its theodoliteor laser station standpoint. Movement beyond a preset allowable amount must generate a warning or error message to the user. Additionally, optical refraction can interfere with the results. Refraction will have an effect on any kind of optical GS. Therefore, careful selection of target and standpoint locations can minimize, but not completely eliminate, the influence of refraction. Some GS technologies, such as Gyro-based systems, are immune to the effects of refraction, but have other, methodical errors which will be described later in this paper. The geology of the Muskeg River Oil Sands Mine is described to demonstrate how geologic modeling aided in resource evaluation and material characterization during the feasibility and construction stages. Bitumen is hosted in the clastic sediments of the Cretaceous McMurray Formation which is informally divided into members representing the fluvial, estuarine and marine environments of this transgressive sequence. Lithofacies mapping of drill core provides further detail to classify materials as resource type, for extraction suitability and for construction suitability. Geologic interpretation provides tools for the engineers to produce effective mine plans and for the operators to execute them during mine development.

Introduction A staccato beat rings out across the Australian bush. The stamps are at work, slowly pulverizing gold-bearing ore for a patient, grizzled prospector. This is the State Battery near Marvel Loch, a tiny 22.6-t/d (25-stpd) capacity gold plant operated by the Western Australia government. It is one of many such plants located in remote corners of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. They are miniature custom mills operated for the benefit of prospectors and small mine operators. These state batteries are so called because they are operated by state governments and because the principal item of machinery in the plants are stamp batteries. They are fascinating anachronisms - throwbacks to times past, a century ago, to the hard and heady existence of gold rush days. Marvel Loch plant Typical of these operations, and perhaps a trifle more sophisticated than most, is the plant near Marvel Loch, a small center for mining and farming about 400 km (250 miles) due east of Perth. Marvel Loch. The name evokes visions of a pristine lake set in a cool, green, misty glen of the Scottish highlands. Actually, it is probably a hot, dry salt pan somewhere nearby. Just where the "loch" is difficult to discern. There is no sign of it on the map.

Testing was conducted to determine the ability of foam to maintain roof coverage in a simulated longwall mining environment. Approximately 27 percent of respirable coal mine dust can be attributed to longwall shield movement, and developing controls for this dust source has been difficult. The application of foam is a possible dust control method for this source. Laboratory testing of two foam agents was conducted to determine the ability of the foam to adhere to a simulated longwall face roof surface. Two different foam generation methods were used: compressed air and blower air. Using a new imaging technology, image processing and analysis utilizing ImageJ software produced quantifiable results of foam roof coverage. For compressed air foam in 3.3 m/s (650 fpm) ventilation, 98 percent of agent A was intact while 95 percent of agent B was intact on the roof at three minutes after application. At 30 minutes after application, 94 percent of agent A was intact while only 20 percent of agent B remained. For blower air in 3.3 m/s (650 fpm) ventilation, the results were dependent upon nozzle type. Three different nozzles were tested. At 30 min after application, 74 to 92 percent of foam agent A remained, while 3 to 50 percent of foam agent B remained. Compressed air foam seems to remain intact for longer durations and is easier to apply than blower air foam. However, more water drained from the foam when using compressed air foam, which demonstrates that blower air foam retains more water at the roof surface. Agent A seemed to be the better performer as far as roof application is concerned. This testing demonstrates that roof application of foam is feasible and is able to withstand a typical face ventilation velocity, establishing this technique’s potential for longwall shield dust control.
