In this paper, one of the human factors that affect productivity in an underground gold mine in Saudi Arabia was investigated and analysed for the purpose of improving productivity. The human factor that was investigated is labour utilization and labour productivity. In the selected mine, labourer?s performances were measured carefully. It was found that in this mine, workers spend only 65% of the shift time in a productive work, and they spend 35% of the shift time in non-productive activities. As a result, recommendations were presented to enhance productivity in the selected underground gold mine by enhancing labour utilization.

Mineral resource evaluation and estimation process is not an exact science; however it depends on the knowledge and experience of the competent person and his ability to apply his mind, make reasonable assumptions, interpretations and exercise sound judgment in the mineral resource estimation process. The mineral resource evaluation results in a mineral resource statement are disclosed to investors. The minerals industry is presently undergoing rapid changes in legislation governing the public reporting of mineral assets. It has gone through different phases of development with respect to the reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves (mineral assets). In the past no reporting was done and currently mineral assets are reported as a supplementary section that briefly describes the mineral asset termed ?the mineral reserve and mineral resource statement?. The current industry trend appears to be going towards recognition and disclosure of the mineral assets on to the balance sheet. This paper explores the salient issues behind the mineral resources and mineral reserve statement of vein and reef deposits published in the public domain. It also highlights the potential misleading consequences of these issues and which filter through to the valuation of these particular mineral assets. The creation of reporting standards in the minerals industry has made significant inroads in standardizing and consolidating the interpretation and understanding of the different classification categories in the industry in an effort to promote common interpretation towards these salient issues.

The Skorpion Zinc Mine and Refinery is situated approximately 25 km north of Rosh Pinah, south-western Namibia. The supergene zinc oxide deposit at Skorpion is hosted in a volcano-sedimentary succession within the para-autochthonous Port Nolloth Zone of the Gariep Belt. Rock types hosting the ore deposit include altered and metamorphosed volcaniclastic and clastic sediments, limestone and rhyolite. At Skorpion, the metallurgical process is unique and the plant design requires minimal fluctuations within a selected feed grade. In addition, the presence of limestone inter-fingered with ore in some areas of the deposit results in dilution problems which may increase gangue acid consumption and therefore processing costs. Hence, selective mining is necessary to ensure the delivery of suitable ore to the processing plant, in order to keep the overall operating costs at a minimum. A complex control system is in place and is capable of a high degree of selectivity. The paper describes the grade control system in place at Skorpion Mine which ensures that the qualities of the blocks planned for mining and the material being mined meet the stringent process requirements of the refinery, i.e zinc grade, gangue acid consumption and deleterious elements that may impact on the efficiency and costs of the metallurgical process. Mintek has developed a level-control system, FloatStar, for use in flotation circuits. Instead of controlling levels separately in each unit, the controller monitors levels throughout the circuit. It can thus take account of the global effects of any control actions. A collaborative project between Mintek and Karee Platinum Mine has begun, looking at aspects of flotation control. Karee plant was chosen as the site for this work because of its good existing control infrastructure. As a first stage of the joint project FloatStar was installed. Analysis during installation and running of the FloatStar has illustrated how circuit design and measurement technology can affect process control. Severe interactions have been observed in the levels of adjacent banks. The effect of FloatStar on flotation performance was tested and an improvement in level control was observed. Similarly, a faster settling of the plant after start-ups was observed. Both the improved level control and faster start-ups lead to higher platinum recovery.

The ‘Metallurgical Operations’ Department of Grinaker-LTA Process Engineering (GLTA) currently undertakes then primary mining as well as the re-deposition of tailings forTicor South Africa (Ticor) at their Hillendale mine near Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The mining plant, which was designed by GLTA on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis, is capable of mining 780 000 tons per month of ROM material which is then pumped to the Primary Wet Plant for treatment by Ticor. Hydraulic mining via high pressure water cannons and subsequent transfer of the heavy mineral slurry at an RD of between 1.35 and 1.48, has never before been undertaken successfully at this level of production on an in situ reserve. The presentation will take the form of a case study in which the unique site operating conditions will be detailed and discussed, as will the innovative process and engineering solutions employed by GLTA to overcome the engineering and production challenges encountered. In order to protect the intellectual property involved in this operation, this paper is fairly general in nature, and attempts merely to provide the reader with a broad perspective understanding of the operation, and some of the difficulties encountered during the early stages of production.

The present paper provides a brief overview of the thermodynamics of titania rich slags, an outline of the Multi-Phase Equilibrium (MPE) package and its application to ilmenite smelting. Through assessment of published experimental data on various systems containing TiOx, it was found that despite considerable scatter in measured phase equilibria data for the binary Ti2O3-TiO2system,the behaviour of binary and higher order titania rich slags and oxide solid solutions phases could be represented by solution models in the MPE package. Results from the applications of the MPE model on the stability of solid phases and slag-refractory interactions will be presented and discussed. Parallels will be drawn between the predictions by the model and observations made during pilot plant tests. Water represents 80?85% of the volume of mineral pulp processed in flotation circuits. Imperatives for a more detailed focus on circuit water quality and its control have come from increasing requirements to use relatively impure primary water supplies (e.g. high salinity, treated sewage) and high proportions of recycle from tailings dams, thickener overflows, dewatered and filter products. An integrated methodology for examining process water quality and its effect on minerals separation has been developed coupled with minerals surface chemistry across the complete processing circuit. Unrecognised factors, including varying proportions of water streams (daily or hourly), colloidal precipitation, highly variable pH and Eh, reaction and dissolution of minerals, minerals surface layer coatings, residual reagents and their reaction products, and microbiological activity have been studied in eight mineral processing circuits. The methodology combines: solution survey and modelling; microbiological surveys; minerals surface analysis and modelling; and process response. It has been possible to match the predicted (model) pulp chemistry with that measured from surveys of the solution and mineral surfaces. Treatment methods have included: monitored and balanced stream combinations; organic species removal; flocculation and aggregation; induced precipitation; dissolved air flotation; ageing (oxidation, UV exposure); and chemical surface conditioning of minerals. Some specific achievements from the methodology applied in plant and laboratory testing, with examples from case studies, will be described.

Common practice in mineral resource estimation consists of partitioning the orebody into several domains defined by grade intervals, prior to the geostatistical modelling and estimation/simulation at unsampled locations. This paper shows the pitfalls of grade domaining through a case study in which we compare the performance of several estimation schemes and demonstrate that the use of domains defined by grade cut-offs implies a deterioration of the resource estimates, mainly in what refers to precision and conditional bias. Then, several conceptual limitations of the grade domaining approach are stressed, in particular the fact that it does not account for the spatial dependency between adjacent domains and for the uncertainty in the domain boundaries. Also, this approach is shown to be sensitive to the cut-offs that define the domains, to provoke artifacts in the kriging maps, histograms and scatter grams between true and estimated grades, and to lower the kriging variance, a feature that may impact the mineral resource classification. An alternative approach is finally proposed to overcome these limitations, based on a stochastic modelling of the grade domains and a co-kriging of the grades using information from all the domains. The Waterberg Coalfield has vast potential to become a significantmining and industrial centre in South Africa. Its future developmenthinges on a number of critical decisions that must be made jointly by government, power utilities and industry, and on some technical and economic challenges that must initially be overcome. Sufficient water is the primary key to enabling exploitation, together with an adequate market for the large volumes of low-grade coal. As the most likely consumer of this coal will be either a power station or a petrochemical complex, the need for additional energy will be a driving force in the development of this coalfield. Conventional mining methods can exploit the shallow coal resources in both the Grootegeluk and the Vryheid formations, but alternative technologies such as coalbed methane extraction and underground coal gasification are the only currently known technologies that may be able to exploit the deep Grootegeluk Formation resources. However, extensive research is still required into these procedures, particularly with respect to the Waterberg coals. Transport infrastructure to the region is currently not sufficiently well developed to support large-scale exploitation of the region?s coal resources. In particular, the railway line would have to be extensively upgraded to allow the increased export of coal. Alternative transport methods such as pipelines would also have to be pursued to serve a large Sasol-type petrochemical complex or coal gas extraction. The road network would also require improvement, as only the roads between the main commercial centres are currently tarred. Dr Con Fauconnier, Kumba CEO, concluded his presentation to the Investing in African Mining Conference 2004 with the words: Again, it?s all about infrastructure? when it?s there, it enables the development of bulk mining projects which attract the resultant economic benefits for the region and country as a whole. These words aptly sum up one of the stumbling blocks to the future development of the Waterberg Coalfield.

To investigate the influence of orientation of crystal lattice on the bacterial leaching of pyrite crystals, single crystals of 100, 111 and110 plane orientations were used for the study. Experiments were carried out in the presence of a Thiobacillus ferrooxidans culture. The different corrosion patterns observed on the surfaces of the bioleached samples suggests a variation in cell-surface interaction from one crystal plane to the other. The surface corrosion patterns generally reflected the influence of the symmetrical arrangement of the atomic planes in the lattice on which they formed. The results indicate that the surface properties of mineral sulphides may control the evolution of corrosion patterns and consequently the initial oxidation process in acid bacterial leaching.

A shortage of technical skills in all areas of the mining industry is being experienced worldwide. This has significant consequences for design, operations, productivity and safety and, therefore, needs to be seriously addressed, both in the short and longer term. It is therefore both a strategic and a tactical issue. Importantly, however, since mining is a long-term business, the shortage of skills must be dealt with from a strategic point of view to ensure the supply of the necessary skills for future mining. This paper will deal specifically with the provision of high level technical skills, that is, university graduates in mining engineering, and the outlook for the institutions that are currently producing such graduates.

The thermodynamic properties for the CaO-CaF2and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation using Born-Mayer-Huggins type pair potential. The parameters of interatomic potential were obtained by fitting the thermodynamics properties of CaO, CaF2and BaO with the experimental data. The phase diagrams for the CaO-CaF2 and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by the thermodynamic properties obtained by MD simulation. The eutectic composition and temperature of the CaO-CaF2system calculated by MD simulation were about 28 mole per cent CaO and 1575K, respectively. The calculated eutectic point agrees very well with experimental data, which are about 22 mole per cent CaO and 1633K, respectively. The data set often contains one or more secondary variables. These secondary variables are usually spatially cross correlated with the primary variable. The addition of the cross-correlated information reduces the variance of the estimation error by using the cokriging method. The grade estimation results of ordinary kriging and cokriging methods are evaluated and it was found that the estimation variance of cokriging method is slightly lower than ordinary kriging. The effect of variation of block dimension on the estimation results is also investigated and it was seen that the cokriging estimation variance values also decrease as the block dimension increases.

PK2 Ventilation shaft is part of Paardekraal No 2 twin shaft system that is being developed to replace depleting Merensky reef production at Paardekraal shaft complex. The sinking team at this shaft faced considerable challenge of improving the total sinking cycle in order to be able to deliver the fully equipped shaft on time and on schedule. The cladding support cycle was identified as the tedious and time consuming activity in the overall shaft sinking operation. Reduction in the time required for handling and setting up the support installation equipment, and the time required for subsequent installation of the necessary support has a direct impact on the overall cycle time, and consequently the overall productivity and efficiency of the sinking operation. This reduction in support cycle was achieved by making use of machine carousel. The objective of this paper is to describe the support methodology that was used during the ventilation shaft sinking and the use of the machine carousel to reduce the cladding support cycle. The machine carousel replaces the traditional use of machine kibble in conventional vertical shaft sinking and has been designed specifically for installation of sidewall support at the shaft bottom during the sinking process.

Changes in reductant and energy inputs which are required to adjust the slag composition in anilmenite smelter to a higher or lower FeO content are calculated. The calculated changes are based on the assumption that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining constrains the slag composition to follow a eutectic groove in the TiO2-FeO-TiO1.5phase diagram. Calculated equilibrium conditions along the eutectic groove are presented, and form the basis of the calculations. The inputs of energy and carbon need to deviate strongly from the steady-state values to adjust the slag composition. The inputs required at any given time depend on the desired rate of change of the slag composition, and the current slag composition. The steady-state relationship of a change in energy input of 5 kWh corresponding to a 1 kg change in carbon input does also hold for the changed inputs during transient changes in FeO content. In the latter part of the 1980?s Outokumpu Chrome in Tornio, Finland, was in a situation when its twenty-year-old ferrochrome plant was becoming inefficient to sustain economically sound production. The company made extensive studies on the then available processing methods to find out the best possible processing route. As a result the whole plant was practically rebuilt and expanded. When equipment was proven in practical operation an application for FeMn production was developed. Now when Tornio FeCr-plant is considering the expansion the same type of exercise is to be performed with today?s challenges, which will be discussed in the paper. These challenges include increasing costs or decreasing quality of raw materials, increasing energy costs, stricter environmental regulations and demand of better working conditions. The possibilities to respond to these challenges will be discussed in the paper. The future and continuing development with FeCr includes the better utilization of process dusts and a lower consumption of energy. By adapting the latest automation tools to better control of the process even higher efficiencies can be achieved with present technology. New processes are considered for development in the future and some possible technologies will be described.

Surface defects on continuously cast slabs require treatment by grinding. This extra phase in the process causes lower throughput of final product and extra energy costs. The elimination of slab treatment after casting implies that slabs can be direct rolled or hot charged, resulting in higher throughput and lower energy costs. To increase the number of slabs that can be direct rolled or hot charged, defects have to be predicted before a slab has completed the casting process. Transversal and longitudinal cracking, casting powder entrapment and other inclusions, bleeders, deep and uneven oscillation marks, stop marks and depressions are the defects thatare considered for prediction. A structure with two models is proposed. The first model describes the effect of mould level, water inlet temperature and casting speed (MV?manipulated variables) on 38 thermocouple temperatures (IV?intermediate variable). Casting speed is a manipulated variable while mould level and water inlet temperature are treated as measured disturbances. This model is known as the MV to IV model, and is used to control the occurrence of defects. The second model describes the effect of the thermocouple temperatures on the defects at different positions and locations on the slabs (OV?output variables). This model is known as the IV to OV model and is the predictor of defects. The models are determined using time-series methods in the form of auto regression with exogenous input using data of approximately 500 slabs cast over a period of 6 months. The models are validated using plant data from 44 slabs gathered three years later, with good results. As an example, published results give a sensitivity and specificity of 61.5 per cent and 75 per cent respectively for longitudinal cracks on validation data, while the presented method gives 63.6 per cent and 93.5 percent, respectively. The IV to OV model is used in an inversion to determine the optimal thermocouple temperatures for each slab width. A number of challenges face platinum concentrator plant operators. These challenges include the increase in operating costs, the increase in smelter cost for the processing of concentrate, the shortage and cost of power, and the tightening of specifications on concentrate quality by the toll-smelting operations. Over the years the focus has moved from extracting the platinum group metals (PGM) from the Merensky Reef to the UG2 reef. This has a number of advantages, including the higher ?basket price? for UG2 concentrate, reduced mining cost per unit volume as a result of the higher density of UG2, and the reduction in overall concentrate tonnage to be smelted. In many cases the Merensky ore has been fully exploited and it makes sense for the focus to shift to the UG2 ore that can be accessed through the Merensky shaft infrastructure. The presence of relatively high levels of chromite in UG2 concentrate is, however, a major disadvantage due to the problems associated with smelting such a concentrate in conventional submerged arc furnaces. In addition to increasing the specification on the minimum PGM grade of concentrates, smelters have had to impose strict specifications on the levels of chromite in the concentrate. The threat of high penalties has forced concentrators to change their modus operandi, often resulting in a significant loss in recovery. The final concentrate grades and PGM recoveries are shown to vary significantly throughout the industry. The reasons for this include varying ore mineralogy and different operating philosophies. This would therefore imply that the opportunity exists to optimize the operations by considering fundamental aspects such as the PGM mineralogy and the application of appropriate technologies. By returning to the fundamentals of flotation and applying the findings of detailed process reviews, it has been possible to increase the concentrate PGM grade, reduce the concentrate chromite grade, and in some cases increase the recovery of PGM to concentrate. This paper presents case studies where this approach has been used to successfully optimize concentrator performance, resulting in lower operating cost and higher PGM production. Mould powders play an important role in the stability of the continuous casting process. The main functions of mould powders are to provide sufficient lubrication and to control the horizontal heat transfer. Because process control of thin slab casting is more stringent, it is generally assumed that mould powder properties become more critical as well. In 2000, the Direct Sheet Plant at Corus IJmuiden (DSP) was commissioned, incorporating a thin slab caster designed for casting speeds up to 6 m/min. During commissioning, several operational problems with mould powders were encountered i.e. insufficient liquid pool depth and the formation of rims/lumps. To investigate the operational mould powder problems, some of the mould powders were characterized using physical and mineralogical methods. The results were linked to operational experiences. It was concluded that for thin slab casting, a stable slag formation is obtained with a proper choice of free carbon and an even distribution of the carbon particles within the granules. The physical properties of mould powders are not as critical as expected when the additional mineralogical requirements are taken into account. Input-output analysis is a major branch of quantitative economics, and is used to analyse the flow of goods and services between production sectors in a national economy. Its purpose is to determine the relative value-adding capacity of each sector. The model has also, in recent years, found increasing use in assessing the environmental and ecological impact of development projects. It has, however, never been applied to individual production facilities, such as large mines, which themselves have complex economic structures, through which there is a flow of goods and services. Conventional cost and accounting systems, as used on mines, treat production sectors as separate cost centres, and do not determine the inter-relationships between them. This can lead to incorrect conclusions on the relative value of sectors and their impact on the total economic performance of the facility. This paper explains the basic principles of input-output analysis, and presents an example of its application to a simplistic model of a mine, which is used in the absence of any real data. The paper concludes that, by forcing definition of the value adding function of each sector, input output analysis will facilitate control of inputs, or costs. This will result in optimal application of resources and exploitation of ore reserves. The authors realise the model needs to be tested on an operating mine, and hope this paper will result in an opportunity to do so.
