This paper reviews the sources, production, and technology of gold in South Africa. First of al it details the geographical distribution of gold-bearing materials, together with the mineralogy and distribution of gold within those materials. It goes on to the geological origins, and to the discovery and early exploitation, of the gold deposits. The laws relating to the mining and disposal of the metal are explained, after which an outline is given of gold exploration, processing, and refining. The economics of gold production are discussed briefly, and it is concluded that, although present expertise in the financial and technological aspects of a gold-mining venture have largely reduced the risks involved, one severe risk remains: that the rate of cost inflation will not be matched by the rate of escalation in the gold price.

In 1999, INCO Limited Mines Research, in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, took delivery of a MeycoRobojet Logica Spraymobile, a computerized concrete spraying system. The Spraymobile is a self-contained mobile machine capable of applying spray-on ground support in underground applications. The Logica component of the Robojet is designed to control the operation of the Robojet, as well as scan and map the tunnel geometry prior to the spraying operation. The Robojet can be operated in various modes, from manual to automatic operation. In the automatic mode the computer controls the standoff distance, angle, and motion of the spraying jet. In 2000, INCO Limited, working with Meyco Equipment of Switzerland (a division of MasterBuilders Technologies), detailed a plan to create a tele-operation package for controlling the spraying process from a surface location at INCO's Mines Research Test mine. With the RobojetLogica operating in automatic mode, the operator at the machine becomes a process monitor. Since the Logica system controls the key spraying parameters of nozzle distance and nozzle angle to the sprayed surface, the operator could easily monitor and control the Robojet Logica from aremote location. The benefits of operating underground mobile mining (drills and LHDs)equipment from a surface location has been demonstrated at INCO Limited, however, the abilityto control a ground support operation (shotcrete spraying) from surface has not been attempted until now. This paper will describe the Spraymobile shotcreting system, the development of the tele-operation package for the Robojet Logica, as well as modifications to the original Spraymobile for implementing the tele-remote package on the Robojet Logica at the Mines Research test mine.

It is a great privilege for me to have been asked to present the closing address to this most successful symposium on backfill in the South African mining industry. When I accepted this invitation I did not fully appreciate the tremendous progress made on most aspects of backfilling in the last few years. The number and quality of papers presented at this symposium bear testimony to the mining industry's determination and success in introducing backfill in underground mines to improve strata control and environmental conditions, and to provide better protection to mineworkers against the hazards of rockbursts and rockfalls. Many contributions demonstrated that these benefits can be achieved at a reasonable cost, and in some instances improved grade and higher rate of face advance result in improved economics. In my closing address I will attempt to summarize the progress made in the various aspects of backfilling underground workings and to identify those areas which, in my opinion, require further attention and effort. I will undertake this review under the following main headings: ? fundamentals of backfilling; ? design of backfill systems; ? operation of backfill systems; ? control of backfill systems; and other aspects of backfill systems.

"Government’s equity role in the minerals sector is one of the nationalist measures implemented in order to ensure greater control and management of a country’s mineral resources. This paper evaluates the Tanzanian government’s equity participation in the minerals sector from 1996 to 2015. The research methodology included determination of the number of mineral rights, minimum allowable exploration expenditures in prospecting licences (PLs), and forms of equity role of the government. Data was collected and analysed for PLs, mining licences (MLs), and special mining licences (SMLs).The study revealed a number of challenges faced by the Tanzanian government as regards its equity strategy in the mineral sector. One of the major challenges was the secrecy surrounding agreements and contracts entered into between the government and private sector investors, which were concluded via various business ownership and mineral development projects. This secrecy resulted in non-transparency and lack ofaccountability in the mining industry.The financial benefits accruing to the government were inadequately realized, evident through inconsistent payments of corporate income tax and mining royalties by the mining companies. Furthermore, the government does not have solid mechanisms and frameworks for assessing non-financial benefits, thus it is difficult to measure the impact of these factors.It is recommended that the Tanzanian government review the Mining Act and Regulations of 2010 to include the provision of solid mechanisms and frameworks for all forms of government equity role.This paper is based on an MSc research study undertaken at the University of the Witwatersrand.IntroductionGovernments can grant private companies mining rights to extract mineral resources, or take a stake in the companies as well as establish state companies to oversee their interests in the minerals sector. The establishment of a state company to oversee government interests in the mining sector implies the direct participation of government by way of equity participation. Equity participation or role is defined as the holding of shares in an enterprise, company, or asset by individuals or a body corporate (Otto, n.d.; Brown, 2013; Natural Resource Governance Institute, 2015)."

A Colloquium on 'Control and Simulation in the Minerals Industry' was held at the Holiday Inn, Milner Park, on 20th September, 1984, in conjunction with the Electra Mining Exhibition. A total of 170 persons attended the very full morning programme, which began with an opening address by the President, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Mr l.D. Austin. He outlined the reasons why computers were being used to an ever-increasing extent for control and simulation in the minerals industry. The computer was even used to check, among other things, the validity of the signals it was receiving by mass-balance calculations.

To be held from the 9th to 14th April, 1972, in Johannesburg, South Africa. GENERAL INFORMATION The first symposium in the series was staged by the University of Arizona in 1961. Since then Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines, Pennsylvania State University and the Society of Mining Engineers of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers have acted together with the University of Arizona as co-sponsors of the series. The 9th Symposium in 1970 was sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy together with McGill University and Ecole Poly technique in Montreal. The 10th Symposium, the first to be held outside the North American continent, is being organised by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the South African Council for Automation and Computation) in close collaboration with the previous co-sponsors. OBJECTIVES Mineral ventures increase in scale and complexity. The planning and control of these projects requires more and more sophisticated techniques. The intention of the symposium is to pool and exchange experience and knowledge and also to discuss new and potential developments. The papers presented in the main sessions, which will extend over one week, will together indicate progress which has been made in the successful application of operations research, mathematical, statistical and computer methods in each of the various aspects of operation in the mineral industry. A coherent account will be developed by consideration, in consecutive sessions, of the stages through which mineral prospects evolve in the course of their life. Primary aims are thus to stimulate discussion in depth of previous applications, to highlight current trends and to provide guidelines for future developments. PARTICIPATION The intention is to bring together persons responsible for managing the various operations in the mineral industry and the workers engaged in the development of mathematical and computer methods relevant thereto. SYMPOSIUM TOPICS 1. Market Analysis-demand and supply trends, models of mineral markets, price prediction. 2. Exploration and ore reserve estimation--exploration strategies, choice of drilling and sampling patterns, quantification of geological information, geo-statistical analysis, ore reserve assessment. Storage and retrieval of associated data. 3. Project design and analysis-influence on viability and risk of capitalisation, scale and method of operation, processing, uncertainties in design premises. 4. Planning of operation-planning and scheduling of construction, of development and of depletion of ore reserves. Logistics, rock mechanics and ventilation. 5. Control of operations-financial, production, cost and quality control as applied to both mining and processing. Flow and processing of relevant information. CALL FOR PAPERS An invitation is extended to intending authors to submit a synopsis, in 200 to 300 words, of papers which would develop the themes outlined above. The Programme Sub-Committee will choose, on the basis of these synopses, some 20 to 30 authors who will be invited to submit papers. Selection will be aimed at the provision of a coherent structure. Other authors may be invited to submit short papers either as contributions to the primary papers or for brief discussion in ancillary sessions which will be scheduled to follow on the main sessions. The official language of the symposium will be English. PROCEEDINGS All of the main and ancillary papers together with edited discussion will be published shortly after the symposium in a single volume. TOURS AND VISITS A choice of visits to relevant local undertakings on a day during the course of the symposium will be available to participants. These will include a deep level gold mine. A tour which will include mineral projects of interest and the Kruger National Game Park will be arranged in the week following the symposium. LADIES' PROGRAMME Arrangements will be made for the reception and entertainment of ladies. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation will be available at hotels convenient to the symposium venue. The cost of reasonable hotel accommodation in Johannesburg is in the range R5 to RIO (7 to 14 U.S. dollars) per person per night. All reservations and associated arrangements may be made through agents to be appointed by the organisers in due course. FEES AND COSTS Symposium fees will not exceed R70 (100 U.S. dollars). These will include registration, one copy of the published proceedings, a set of pre-prints of the main papers, teas and lunches during the course of the symposium, and the various official social events as well as the mid-week visits. Accommodation, travel and post-symposium tour charges are not included in this figure. Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of eighteen and the standing committees held forty-six meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of income over expenditure of R5 051 compared with an excess of expenditure over income last year of R4 608. This major reversal of fortunes is due in the first instance, of course, to the increased subscriptions. There were, however, other important contributors, particularly sales of the Proceedings of the Symposium on Open Pit Mining and profits on the operation of symposia and colloquia. It would appear from a study of the accounts that there has been a substantial drop in expenditure on secretarial fees. In actual fact, however, our total expenditure on secretarial fees was higher. A portion of this expenditure was charged against the administration of the Symposium on Open Pit Mining and, in addition, the charge against the Journal accounts for secretarial fees was increased. It will be recalled that in last year's annual report it was mentioned that subsequent to the new arrangement for publication of the Journal, the expected improvement in the finances of the Journal had been slow in materialising. After a total period of 18 months there was still no sign of improvement and it was accordingly decided to end the arrangement. As a result, the drain on the finances of the Institute was considerably lessened in the second half of the year. During the course of the year Council became concerned about the rapid depletion of our accumulated funds and gave careful and detailed attention to all aspects of the Institute's financial affairs. Particular attention was given to: 1. The fact that the Institute does not have a solid financial backing and must appeal for funds every time any special event such as a symposium is held. 2. The responsibilities of the Institute to the profession and the community, with particular reference to the desirability of establishing Institute bursaries and participating in other educational activities. 3. The rapidly rising cost of living. 4. The immediate financial position of the Institute. 5. The rapidly increasing cost of publishing the Journal due to the increasing number of papers available. In the meantime the immediate financial position of the Institute has improved but as this is due largely to non-recurring or irregular items of revenue, it should not be given undue weight. After careful consideration it was decided that an appeal should be made to industry for financial assistance, which would be used to cover the cost of symposia and other unusual expenditure and also, if possible, to build up the capital resources of the Institute so that there is a solid foundation for the future. Before appealing to industry, Council wished to be quite certain that there could be no criticism of the Institute for not having done our best in a personal capacity. Furthermore, Council examined many comparative statistics, including those circulated to members, which showed that, while expenditure per member has risen at an average annual rate of 7,5% over the last fifteen years, subscription revenue per member has risen at only 3,4% per annum. It was with this background that your Council decided to raise the subscriptions. Initial approaches have been made to the big mining groups and there has been a very generous response, although the details of how financial assistance will be provided have not yet been worked out. It seems likely that some form of affiliated company membership will be the most suitable method of achieving this. When these details have been fixed, it is the intention to extend the appeal to all corners of the mining industry as well as manufacturing and metallurgical industries. It is believed that these measures will ensure that the finances of the Institute are placed on a firm foundation on which the expanding activities can be planned. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R73 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4 411. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year fron R6 540 to R9 160. The market value is now almost exactly the same as the book value. Accumulated funds now amount to R23 010 compared with R17 959 a year ago.

In the field of high temperature smelting processes there have been two dramatic changes in the past twenty years. These are, first, the application of tonnage oxygen for direct injection for the refining of molten iron and other metals and to provide the means of enriching air used for the combustion of fuel. Second, the application of electric power for the generation of high temperatures in place of the combustion of fossil fuels. Of these two developments the application of tonnage oxygen for the refining of molten iron has virtually revolutionised the steel industry throughout the world. The magnitude of this development is exemplified by the fact that less than 5 per cent of the world's steel production in 1960 was made by this process or 16 million tons out of a total of 350 million tons of steel produced, while in 1970 over 40 per cent of the world steel production was made by this process, ie, 251 million tons out of 628 million tons total. In the same period the proportion of steel produced by the old-established open-hearth process has shrunk from 75 per cent to 38 per cent. In the whole history of the development of high temperature metallurgical smelting processes there has never been anything remotely approaching this. The other development, the application of electric power for the generation of high temperatures has not had the impact of the oxygen injection process but I believe that what we should call the electric smelting revolution in metallurgical processes has very far-reaching ramifications for steel production and other pyrometallurgical processes. This may seem a bold and brash statement but it must be remembered that the oxygen injection process constitutes a link in the chain critically dependent upon the production of vast tonnages of molten iron from very large modern blast furnaces. The Achilles heel of this chain of processes, upon which such a large percentage of the world's supply of steel depends, is the availability of metallurgical coke in turn dependent on natural resources of coking coal. Without any exception each industrial country in the world faces a shortage of resources of coking coal and in some cases a critical shortage. Certainly within the present century the major iron and steel producing countries of the world will face this critical shortage of coking coal and major modifications to steel making processes will become inevitable. W. F. Cartwright (Deputy Chairman of B.S.C) said recently that there are considerable doubts as to whether the world will be able to provide enough coking coal to meet world steel demands from the late 1970's onwards if the B.F.remains the main means for making iron from ore. This is one of the supreme ironies of the world metallurgical situation to-day when the technology of iron and steel production has reached an extremely high peak of technical efficiency. The newest modern iron blast furnace capable of producing 6 000 to 8 000 tons per day of molten iron represents probably the most efficient piece of high temperature metallurgical plant and operation known to man. The conversion of this molten iron into steel by the oxygen injection process has made available to the engineering industry steel of a quality and at a price which is quite remarkable. Yet this vast metallurgical pyramid rests on the completely insecure and uncertain foundation of inadequate world resources of coking coal. The shortage of reserves of coking coal in this country is acute and it is possible that these resources will be exhausted within the next twenty years. Yet unless some completely unexpected catastrophe occurs the demand for steel in this country will probably rise at a faster rate than in the Western world due to the expansion of the Bantu population and the increased standard of living. To offset the inevitable shortage of coking coal are our much greater resources of bituminous coal which although of low grade provide a suitable fuel for electric power generation. The geographical disposition of the coal fields in relation to the great industrial areas of the Transvaal makes it inevitable that the development of the pyrometallurgical industries must depend heavily on electric power. The position in this country with regard to electrical power generation and consumption is rather anomalous. Per capita consumption of electric power is high - in 1964 almost twice the world average of 870 KWH and twenty-five times the average of 34 KWH for the Continent of Africa. In 1964 fifty-four per cent of the total world electric power was used in industry - the ratio being approximately 1/9 mining to manufacturing uses. As shown in Table I in 1969 67.2 per cent of the total output of electric power from ESCOM was used for mining and other industrial uses but almost in the ratio 6/4 mining to industrial uses. These figures emphasise the enormous importance of the mining industry to the economy of this country and underline the major contribution made by the gold mining industry. What is of very significant importance is that although the mining industry remains by far the largest single consumer of electrical power the consumption of power for industrial uses is rising rapidly as shown in Table II.

SYNOPSIS The paper describes the rib-pillar extraction method now used at Sigma Colliery in the Orange Free State. In this method, access roadways (with a high safety factor) are developed into a block of coal suitable for total extraction; pillars that have a low safety factor are then formed and extracted immediately. The method, together with the current practices of labour management, has resulted in better utilization of the coal resources and capital, increased production and labour productivity, and improved safety.

This paper describes the design and construction of the first experimental underground rockcutting machine from measurements of cutting forces determined in tests on small rock specimens in the workshop. The deficiencies of this design, revealed by stoping with almost identical rockcutting machines, are described. An account is given of the design and construction of further experimental machines incorporating substantial improvements which made them technically feasible for use in production.

The paper compares operational parameters for the electric reduction smelting of pig iron and ferroalloys in pilot and industrial furnaces. Data from two pilot furnaces of approximately 200 and 500 kW operating-load capacity, as well as from several production furnaces, are included. Examples are given for the smelting of pig iron, ferronickel, ferromanganese, ferrochromium, and ferrosilicon. In most instances, the results from the pilot furnaces, such as the values for consumption and product analyses, corresponded fairly well with comparable data from the industrial furnaces. For ferrosilicon, the power consumption in the pilot furnace was higher than that in the industrial furnace.

The South African gold and platinum deposits were formed in very different ways and yet both have many similarities. They are flat dipping tabular ore bodies, extremely narrow and located in hard abrasive country rock. The mining methods employed are also similar. Primary access is via shafts or declines; secondary access is via haulages and cross cuts; and tertiary access is from raises. The proposed solution for rapid access described in this paper is focussed on the haulages, cross cuts and raises. The non-explosive rock breaking method has many other applications, however, it is the integration with the Tunnel Digging Machine that results in the first, cost effective, Continuous Tunnelling Machine for hard rock mining.

Most men who remain in mining and metallurgy like their jobs. There are many times when you say to yourself or to your wife - 'Anybody can have my job - if they want it'. You feel so fed up and frustrated everything that could go wrong has gone wrong.

A mineral economic analysis of South Africa's mineral-beneficiation industry, comprising both economic theory and case studies, suggests that the domestic market has proved to be a more effective vehicle for promoting the establishment of advanced beneficiation projects than the availability of domestic raw materials. Although the domestic market plays an important role in the promotion of beneficiation by providing a secure outlet for sales, its most vital role is in the development of technological and marketing know-how that may give South African beneficiated products the competitive advantage required to penetrate export markets. The real wealth of a country lies primarily in the skills of its people rather than in its natural resources, and the domestic market plays a pivotal role in the development of these skills.
