Orebody modelling and reserve estimation are now subject to sophisticated procedures, but folded stratiform and stratabound deposits present particular problems in transforming coordinates of samples and blocks into their correct relative positions prior to deformation. In this paper an approach is taken whereby a geologically interpreted reference plane is used as a control. The study area is the Rio Tinto Minera copper mine near Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The transformation procedure on the 'unfolded' state is described, its limitations assessed and advantages considered.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng. (Chemical) Membrane processes are vital to a diverse range of technical and biological systems, which also feature in mineral processing applications such as the treatment of mine effluent and extraction of metals. In this study, the use of cellular automata to model a semi-permeable membrane that separates two compartments is considered. Cellular automata are simple models that enable the analyst to represent well-understood local effects, such as the chemical or steric interaction between molecules themselves and between molecules or particles and their environment, which can lead to very complex behaviour on a macroscopic scale. Various physical phenomena, including reverse osmosis, were simulated. Initial results for the effect of temperature, membrane structure and chemical properties of the solutes on the performance of the membrane appear promising. Extensions to the beneficiation plant at the Grootegeluk Coal Mine are currently being planned in order to provide power station coal for Escom's Matimba Power Station, presently under construction. A simulation model was developed on the Olivetti M-24 microcomputer to facilitate the development of the envisaged flowsheet. The computer program simulates the heavy-medium separation and screening unit operations. The model is based on the construction of the Tromp partition curve described by an arctangent function, allowing ideal and non-ideal separations. The paper discusses the determination of the parameters required by the arctangent curve from standard process parameters such as Epm, Wolf cut-point, Tromp cutpoint and screening efficiency. The accuracy and shortcomings of the model are discussed, while an overview of the application of the model to evaluate borehole and bulk sample analyses is also given. It is concluded that the model is an invaluable aid to general flowsheet development.

The objective of the investigation is to optimize the truck and shovel operations for pre-stripping at New Vaal Colliery by introducing campaign mining. The aim of campaign mining is to improve the efficiency of the loading, hauling, dumping, and maintenance operations which are critical to the success of truck and shovel operations. The current loading (single-sided loading method), hauling, and dumping operations at New Vaal Colliery were found to be inefficient. Time studies were used as a major indicator to highlight the inefficiency of the truck and shovel operations, and it is recommended that an improved loading configuration, hauling, and dumping operations be implemented by using campaign mining. It is also recommended that a service truck be used to maintain the pre-stripping fleet in order to reduce travelling times to the main workshop. As expected, the improved operating conditions will lead to an increase in pre-stripping production.

Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) operates a 50 Mtpy copper/gold/silver mine and concentrator on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. BCL has installed an in-house developed data logging and supervisory process control system using a DEC PDP 11/73 mini-computer in the mill and has recently installed a similar system in the crushing plant. Together with the central DEC VAX 11/780 computer, they form part of a high speed, fibre optic, local area network in the concentrator. The in-house developed software, known as BIAS (Bougainville Copper Information and Automation System), was developed as a low cost option to interface to a number of different existing plant input/output systems while providing the capability to make maximum use of computer networking facilities. The package includes the more usual control system colour displays and data logging features, but also makes provision for two novel features: (a) Any user connected to the computer network can access the system displays. This allows metallurgists and management to monitor (but not control) plant operation from their offices. (b) Specialized application programs for performing advisory and supervisory control, dynamic simulation, and data analysis are easily incorporated into the system. The mill process system currently runs rougher/scavenger flotation stabilizing control and general data logging. The crushing plant system currently performs data logging only; however it will soon be augmented with the facility to run dynamic crushing plant simulations. Future developments will concentrate on making greater use of the detailed information available from the mine's fully automatic truck dispatch system which runs on a VAX 11/780 computer. Milling process control will be expanded to examine possible economic control of the operation of regrind and cleaner flotation circuits. An advisory water management system to optimize water supply within powerhouse generating capacity constraint will also be investigated.

Tarkwa Gold Mine is owned by Gold Fields Ghana, IAMGOLD and the Government of the Republic of Ghana in a 71%, 19% and 10% ratio. The mine is operated by Gold Fields Ghana. This large, low-grade, open pit, gold mining operation is located in Tarkwa, in the Western Region of Ghana, approximately 320 kilometres by road, west of Accra, the capital of Ghana, West Africa. In the Financial year ended June 2007, the operation mined a total of 108 million tonnes of which 22 million tonnes was ore. The mined ore is processed through three gyratory crushers supplying two heap leach pads (North and South) and a carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant. Before the 6 Sigma project commenced, the current fragmentation was resulting in sub-optimal feed size to these crushers. It was decided to use 6 Sigma methodology to improve the fragmentation. A defect was defined as a fragmentation analysis indicating less than 95% passing 750 mm. The objective was to improve fragmentation in order to achieve a constant throughput to the north heap leach crusher of 1500 t/hr, a 5% increase in pit loading efficiency and a 50% decrease in rock breaker hours, equipment damage costs and in-pit sheeting costs respectively. However, this was not to be achieved at the expense of grade control as Tarkwa is exploiting a low grade, high volume deposit and therefore ore dilution must be kept to a minimum. This paper is intended to take the reader through the various 6 Sigma phases of the project (Define ? Measure ? Analyse ? Improve ? Control) which have resulted in a 10% reduction in loading times, of which half has been attributed to improved fragmentation, as well as a substantial increase in blasted stocks. The focus has been on both drilling and blasting parameters as both processes had to be taken into account. These parameters are technical but personnel factors were also identified and dealt with as they arose. In order to measure the impact of any change in the process parameters on the fragmentation size distribution, cameras have been acquired. One has been installed looking into the bowl of the north crusher and the other one was dedicated to field observation, of individual blasts. Both are used for on-going fragmentation analysis. At Tarkwa, mining efficiency is strongly dependent on good fragmentation as well as the presence of un-blasted ?toes? on the pit floors. Crusher throughput depends on an acceptable ore fragment size. Compliance to plan with regards to actual hole depths was temporarily monitored by manual hole dipping, but, this is now being replaced with a fully automated Drill Data Management system developed by Sandvik and Modular Mining. The Six Sigma methodologies, using control charts based on data collected in the field, allowed the mine to improve methods with regards to the control of blasted material. It also enforced the implementation of a quality control programme encompassing the entire Drill and Blast process.

As exploration is time-consuming, costly, and risky, determination of the erosion surface of a metalliferous deposit before geophysical surveying and exploration drilling might be very helpful. Geochemical haloes can be used to determine whether the erosion surface is supra-ore or sub-ore and thus reduce the risk of exploration operations. The aim of this investigation is to determine the erosion surface of the North ROK porphyry deposit (NRPD) in northwestern British Columbia in Canada using linear productivity (LP), which is the content of an element defining the halo multiplied by the width of the halo. A total of 2045 soil samples from the B horizon were analysed using ICP-MS for 36 elements, including Cu, Mo, Pb, Zn, Au, As, Ag, Ni, Co, Fe, and Mn. The data-set was snalysed to obtain the statistical parameters and the elements Cu, Mo, Pb, and Zn were chosen to calculate the linear productivity and the total linear productivity. These four elements were modelled using probability plots to identify and separate subpopulations in terms of anomalous haloes and background, including the threshold values of each subpopulation. The results of the probability plot modelling and thresholds values were then used to map the distribution of each element in a GIS to calculate the linear productivity. The total linear productivity indicated that the erosion surface is supra-ore. Finally, a 3D orebody model of the Cu, Mo, Pb, and Zn distributions was constructed using borehole data and used to validate the results.

The development of short- and medium-term mine production schedules in isolation from each other has meant that only a local optimum can be achieved when each scheduling phase is carried out. The globally optimal solution, however, can be achieved when integrating scheduling phases and accounting for the interaction between short-term and medium-term activities simultaneously. This paper addresses the task of integrating short- and medium-term production plans by combining the short-term objective of minimizing deviation from targeted mill feed grade with the medium-term objective of maximizing net present value (NPV) into a single mathematical optimization model. A conceptual sublevel stoping operation comprising 30 stopes is used for trialling segregated and integrated scheduling approaches. Segregated medium- and short-term scheduling using separate models achieved an NPV of $42 654 456. The final scheduling approach involved integrating the two scheduling horizons using the newly-developed globally optimal integrated production scheduling model to achieve an NPV of $42 823 657 with smoother mill feed grade. The larger the stope data set, the larger the difference between the two scheduling approaches is likely to be. At the very least, an integrated approach ensures feasibility across the two scheduling horizons, which cannot always be assumed when using a segregated approach.

BHPBilliton is a large (US$32bn market capitalization) diversified mining group. Significant organic growth is planned through the development of a number of mining, processing and oil and gas projects, totalling some US$5.2bn over the next three years. The investment standards underpin the capital approval process, and incorporate the requirements for range and risk analysis of key input variables, including mineral resources. Public reporting codes for mineral resources and ore reserves (such as JORC) stipulate deterministic reporting of estimates, but are generally silent on any requirement for range or risk assessment, although they acknowledge the risk and uncertainty in the production of resource estimates. In contrast, public reporting of petroleum reserves allow for the use of either deterministic or probabilistic estimation, and for the latter, mandate the level of confidence required for proven versus probable reserves. Conditional simulation techniques, popular in the petroleum industry, provide an ideal tool forrange and risk assessment of the range of outcomes of key resource parameters, such as tonnagesand grades. Examples of a diamond deposit and of a porphyry copper deposit are presented. The understanding and quantification of mineral resource risk through a technique such as conditional simulation provides quantified information on the potential upside or downside. The internal rate of return (IRR) is one of the most popular project evaluation criteria in the mineral industry, as well as in other industrial sectors. Analysis of its assumptions reveals, however, that this criterion does not function in the way it is supposed to. The search for a new criterion that would reflect the true rate of return (TRR) of an investment project or the true borrowing rate (TBR) of a borrowing project has led to the development of several approaches, yielding, for the same project, generally different values of the interest rate in question. Two of those approaches have been selected as the most representative and practical. Each has been presented in two variants, and subsequently analysed. As a result, it is shown that the various approaches to the TRR/TBR are all consistent with the net present value (NPV) criterion, and that each can serve as an independent project evaluation instrument, provided its assumptions can be regarded in a given situation as realistic enough.

Pseudomonas spp was isolated from mine water and tailings samples collected from mining effluents and mine dumps in the Gauteng and Northern provinces of South Africa respectively. Adsorption properties of Pseudomonas spp were then tested for the removal of Cu and Co initially from their synthetic sulphate solutions, subsequently from effluents derived from metallurgical operations. The effects of experimental conditions such as pH, temperature, time, volume and metal concentration on the efficiency of the biosorption process were studied. Absorption of 45% Cu (pH 6, 37°C, 24 hours) and 40% Co (pH 6, 37°C, 24 hours) was observed from solutions with low concentrations (0.07 M). A maximum of 73% and 65% of Cu and Corespectively were recovered from the mine water samples derived from effluents.

Methods based on regionalized variables theory, commonly known as geostatistics, have been widely used since more than three decades to predict/estimate spatial distributed data, namely mineral resources, with quite good results. However, some restrictive theoretical assumptions, such as the need of some kind of stationarity of data and the linearity of the predictor/estimator, are often wrong options in many applications. An alternative approach based on a finite mixture modelling, or cluster weighted modelling (CWM) technique, is presented and compared, in its theoretical and practical aspects, with the geostatistical methodology. CWM is a general non-linear framework based on the estimation of joint density functions allowing the calculation of the conditional probability function of the target values given their locations. Validation tests are performed in a 2D case study, where testing data proceeds from a soil contaminated by a heavy metal. The results of ordinary kriging and CWM estimations show a very good agreement with actual data. Anionic surfactants, such as oleic acid and sodium oleate (OLE), and cationic surfactants, such as dodecyl amine-hydrochloride (DDA), are used as flotation collectors of spodumene. However, recovery is poor even if activating ions are used because gangue minerals are also activated. Some reports demonstrate that OLE/DDA mixtures act as a selective collector to enhance spodumene recovery. From mostly macroscopic tests, it has been argued that anionic OLE and cationic DDA form electroneutral complexes, which are adsorbed on the mineral surface through chemisorption; however, no molecular evidence has been presented. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms of the collector mixtures remain mostly unknown. It seems necessary to first study the behaviour of these surfactants confined in salt solutions, to determine auto-associations when they are pure and cross-associations when mixed, the transition from monomers to micelles, and the structure of the micelles and the effects of pH, temperature and concentration. In this paper, ab initio calculations are first used to determine the surface charge distribution of OLE and DDA separately. Then molecular dynamics simulations are used to determine the conformation, aggregation, and diffusion of these pure and mixed surfactants in freshwater and saltwater with the ionic strength of seawater in a pH range. In particular, it is interesting to determine the various associations that result in mixtures of both surfactants and the impact of alkali and alkaline earth metal cations on the structures formedp. Cations influence the order of the structure and orientation of water dipoles, reducing the mobility of water, ions, and surfactant molecules. The uranium production forecasting program described in this paper projects production from Reasonably Assured, Estimated Additional and Speculative Resources in the cost categories of less than $130/kg U. Originally designed to handle South African production, it has been expanded and redimensioned using available published information to forecast production for countries of the Western World. The program forecasts production from up to 400 plants over a period of fifty years and has built-in production models derived from documented historical data of the more important uranium provinces. It is particularly suitable to assess production cavabilities on a national and global scale where variations in outputs for the individual plants tend to even out. The program is aimed at putting the uranium potential of any one country into a realistic perspective, and it could thus be useful for planning purposes and marketing strategies.

Leinster Nickel Operations, located in Western Australia, consists of an underground and three open pit mines in relatively adverse ground conditions. This paper reviews our ground control practices in the open pits, covering aspects of ground support, wall control and monitoring. These methods have been effective in allowing mining operations to continue beneath unstable slopes. In particular, the use of Groundprobe?s Slope Stability Radar has enabled the Harmony Open Pit to safely operate for months following indication of failure from traditional methods. This case study highlights the benefits of investing in appropriate slope stability monitoring systems.

This paper summarizes a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialed at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this, a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

A class of gravity separation unit operations in ore-dressing relies for its operation on the production of a stratified bed. Heavier material gravitates downwards, and separation is achieved by splitting the ore horizontally, with the recovery of a dense stream and a lighter stream. The important ore-dressing unit operations that fall in this class are the jig, the Reichert cone and the pinched sluice. A new quantitative model based on Mayer's potential theory is developed here. This model is developed completely for the simple case of binary mono-size particulate materials, but the extension to units operating with feed material distributed over particle size and density is discussed in principle. The model can be used to predict the performance of these units and is very suitable for simulation. The model is tested successfully against experimental data obtained from a batch jig and a Reichert cone.

An analytical framework is formulated to assist mining companies in assessing the relative merits of mineral exploration and acquisition strategies. The anticipated costs, risks, and returns of each strategy are conceptualised using decision trees. Economic criteria - expected net present value, expected return per unit of investment, and the probability of success - for each strategy are derived(from the appropriate decision tree network. Application of the analytical framework is illustrated using the example of a medium-size company in the Canadian base metal sector.

Middleburg Ferrochrome (MFC), a company in Samancor Chrome, commissioned a new ferrochrome smelter in March 2009. This is a 60 MW DC-arc furnace with a DC power supply for the smelting of Transvaal chromite ore fines. With the benefit of 12 years' experience with this technology while operating a 44 MW DC-arc furnace, MFC mitigated all known challenges and considered up-scaling risk in the new plant, which had a rapid ramp-up to full power in 02 of 2009. Good operating practices, as made possible by robust equipment selection, including a thyristor rectifier set of proven technology, and operation with optimal slag chemistry, leads to a safe and effective plant operation. With the optimized furnace design and a correctly sized power conditioning system, using only standard (static) harmonic filters and a correctly sized smoothing reactor, the arc furnace is not a 'dirty load' for the utility, staying well within IEC limits for power quality. A patented arc compensation system is installed and allows for full arc position control (to compensate for magnetic field induced arc deflection) so that a symmetrical crucible is maintained, significantly benefiting refractory life. The principal benefits gained from the MFC process is the fact that ore fines are processed, without metallurgical coke, and higher chrome recoveries are achieved compared to other smelting technologies when using a DC open arc for smelting.
