The Gautrain rapid rail link project is currently Africa?s largest infrastructure project connecting South Africa?s major airport (OR Tambo), Johannesburg and Pretoria. Phase one is planned for completion in time for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and involves 80 km of track and 15 km of underground tunnels. The key shaft sinking blasting issues revolve around maximising advance and improving blasting cycles to meet the tight deadlines as well as environmental control which, in some cases takes place only 15m from the city infrastructure. To achieve success, DetNet South Africa supplied a range of electronic detonator systems to cater for the different blasting applications involved (tunnels, portals, shafts and viaduct foundations). One such product, QuickShot, was used for the first time in a major civil engineering project and has been used in most of the shaft sinking blasts to date. The QuickShot system combines pre-programmed electronic detonators with special on-bench components that enable the user to quickly and easily design the firing sequence solely by using the order of connections. This precludes the user from having to deal in absolute delay times. The connecting system enables benches to be hooked-up speedily by multiple users who have differing levels of experience. This paper provides details of how, after 33 months, the system has been embraced by the project by aiding in maximised advances, improved cycle times and meeting the required environmental constraints.

As part of an investigation of possible water-saving measures at Anglo American Platinum's Mogalakwena Mine in Limpopo, South Africa, a study was made of conditions on the wet beaches of two adjacent tailings dams, each serving a separate plant on the mine. For one of the dams, a special catamaran was designed and constructed to enable the full length of wet beaches to be accessed and sampled immediately after a layer of tailings had been deposited. For the other dam, the wet beach was accessed using conveyor belting and scaffold planks. The length of the beaches was 400 m on the first dam, and 200 m on the second, and each was sampled at 50 m intervals. The parameters reported in this paper, for both beaches, are: > Water content profiles along each beach from the surface to as deep as 2.5 m, at times ranging from 12 hours to 6 weeks from the end of deposition > Particle size distributions at the surface, down the full length of the beaches > Measurements of feed relative density, tonnage and volume, decant and drain flow volumes, as well as rainfall and evaporation for both dams. The surface water contents shortly after deposition have been used to establish the relative density of the settled, decanted tailings and its variation down the beach. This data, combined with the decant and drainage flows, is used to establish the calculated and actual water recoveries from both dams.

Compressed air is widely used on South African gold mines. However, due to recent and proposed future electricity tariff increases it is quickly becoming too expensive to produce and use. Boxfront chute systems at ore passes were focused on during this study, and a number of alternative power sources were examined. After comparing primarily costs, and secondarily safety and practicality, of a number of systems based on water and hydraulic oil, a system making use of either air or water was determined to be the most cost effective. A payback time of 8 years was calculated, which will be significantly less taking into account the avoidance of failures due to electricity and water shortages, which would not affect this system due to its ability to swap between either air or water. It was recommended that this system be installed at all boxfront chutes as soon as possible so that the company can begin to benefit from the cost savings.

Human factors in stope productivity -a field experiment by K. F. MAUER, M.A. (Visitor), and A. C. LAWRENCE, B.Econ., D.Com. (Member) An experiment in which three human variables were manipulated in eight stopes was conducted in a gold mine over a period of roughly six months. The three variables, which each had two levels, concerned the degree of movement from gangs, the quality of the Bantu production supervisors, and the extent to which gangs were composed of a single ethnic group (Malawians). Time was included as a variable with three levels in the analysis of the findings. On the average, stable gangs produced 12 per cent more than gangs with a high percentage of transfers, gangs with better production supervisors were more successful by nearly 9 per cent than those with poorer production supervisors, and homogeneous gangs were more productive than heterogeneous ones by as much as 15 per cent. In addition, it was found that a number of the variables exercised a joint influence on stope productivity and that the effects of the variables were accentuated by the len gth of time they had been in operation. The FUTURE project aims to enhance seismic surveying in South African mining by integrating advanced acquisition technologies. In this paper, we detail surface and underground seismic surveys at the South Deep gold mine as part of the project. Surface seismic acquisition used co-located broadband micro-electromechanical sensors, one and three component recorders connected to geophones, distributed acoustic sensing using a straight fibre optic cable, along with a 6 ton broadband seismic vibrator operating with 4–180 Hz linear sweeps. In addition, underground surveys employed a combination of straight, and helically wound fibre optic cables, cabled-based and nodal sensors, along with a 500 kg drophammer mounted on a skid steer bobcat. The surface and underground seismic arrays were time synchronised using a GPS-time transmitter to allow for accurate seismic data recording in a GPS-denied environment. Results show the efficacy of these techniques in acquiring high-resolution seismic data, revealing detailed subsurface geological structures and mineralisation down to 3500 m below ground surface. Surface data revealed clear seismic reflections corresponding to the Black Reef and Ventersdorp Contact Reef. An underground P-wave velocity model exhibits low velocity anomalies that are associated with fracturing, while a P-wave reflection stack section shows significant reflections and a degree of faulting below the tunnel floor that was not observed on the surface reflection seismic data. We highlight the potential of these technologies to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in mining. This study sets a benchmark for future reflection seismic surveys, paving the way for safer, more efficient, deep mineral exploration and extraction practices.

The limit equilibrium model, used in displacement discontinuity codes, is a popular method to simulate pillar failure. This paper investigates the use of physical modelling to calibrate this model. For the experiments, an artificial pillar material was prepared and cubes were poured using the standard 100 mm × 100 mm civil engineering concrete moulds. The friction angle between the cubes and the platens of the testing machine was varied by using soap and sandpaper. Different modes of failure were observed depending on the friction angle. Of interest is that significant loadshedding was recorded for some specimens which visually remained mostly intact. This highlights the difficulty of classifying pillars as failed or intact in underground stopes where spalling is observed. The laboratory models enabled a more precise calibration of the limit equilibrium model compared to previous attempts. Guidelines to assist with calibration of the model are given in the paper. The limit equilibrium model appears to be a useful approximation of the pillar failure as it could simulate the stress-strain behaviour of the laboratory models.

Cave mining is an underground mass mining technique. The largest projects, which are known as ‘super caves’, produce hundreds of thousands of tons of ore per day, which involves large footprints with considerable column height, and have a life of mine of over 20-40 years. These operations are typically located deep, under high stresses and in competent rock masses, making initiation and propagation of the caving process harder to manage. These challenges must be confronted by optimizing the fragmentation of the orebody to achieve smaller size blocks that will result in consistent caving and improved flow of the ore from the drawpoints. To achieve better performance from the drawpoints, preconditioning is applied to fragment and damage the material required to cave. We present a proposed design for preconditioning in underground mines, considering the challenges that these large-scale mines are already facing, based on a comprehensive analysis of current design parameters, case studies, and sensitivity analyses using numerical models.

"The purpose of this study is to understand how ore loss and dilution affect the mine call factor, with the aim of subsequently improving the quality of ore mined and fed to the mill. It was necessary to know the relationship between ore mined and delivered for processing in order for the mine to operate efficiently. A review of the literature suggested the mine-to-mill integration approach as a standard intervention to address declining mine call factors. A case study was undertaken at a gold mine in the Free State on the influence of the fragment size distribution on ‘free gold’, the effect of ore loss and dilution on the mill efficiency, and time tracking of ore movement from source to the plant. The study revealed that fragmentation, underground accumulation of ore, and dilution have a significant influence on the mine call factor and mine output. It was difficult to quantify the total ore loss due to the time lag between mining and milling, which is extremely variable, when estimating the mine process inventory. However, it was possible to estimate the total dilution with some degree of precision by analysing the daily blast and head grades. It is therefore recommended that mines accept that some gold loss and dilution will always occur during blasting and transport of broken ore, and this loss must be minimized.IntroductionThe mining of high gold grades is obviously very beneficial for the economic viability of an operation, but optimum recovery of the product is required to maximize profits (Chapman and Bindoff, 2010, p. 13). Although integrating these two requirements is very difficult, due to the various activities occurring between mining and processing, it is indispensable. The main driver of this integration is the impact that different ore types and characteristics have on head grade. According to Isokangas et al. (2012, p. 871), mining and processing operations involve a series of well-defined sequential stages that are complementary in an efficiently operating mine, with the performance of one operation affecting that of another. An attempt to optimize each function separately without considering the whole extraction process will not result in the optimum efficiency of the entire mine. Several researchers have developed a proven methodology for revealing these inefficiencies (Dance et al., 2006, p. 1)."

The aim of this work was to compare the corrosion behaviour of thermal spray WC ? based coatings before and after annealing. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the phases present in the coatings at various stages. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was measured using electrochemical and immersion corrosion tests. The results obtained from electrochemical corrosion (quantified by corrosion current density) and immersion corrosion tests showed that annealing appears to decrease the corrosion resistance of the coatings. From the XRD results it was determined that the phases that corroded preferentially were cobalt (Co), eta (Co6W6C) and W2C. Keywords: Corrosion, thermal spray, coatings, hardmetals.

Several aspects of the behaviour and properties of backfills consisting of cemented cyclone underflow tailings are illustrated by means of examples, and guidelines are given on the optimization of the performance of cemented fills. The stretch characteristics of the geofabric used to contain freshly placed backfill are described, as well as the relationship between these characteristics and the forces acting on retaining barricades. The properties required to achieve a self-supporting, stable free face in cemented backfill are explored, and a graphic relationship between stable height and shear strength is presented and compared with that for uncemented (classified) tailings. After a description of the characteristics of Witwatersrand quartzite gold-tailings backfill and commonly used cements, the process of drainage and air entry into backfill is outlined. Following this, the early-age gain in strength and the shear-strength characteristics, as well as the compressibility characteristics of cemented backfill, are described. Two phenomena that are potentially damaging to cemented backfill are seismic effects (or blasting acceleration) and the closure that takes place during the curing of cement. Investigations show that neither of these phenomena is actually significantly deleterious to gold-tailings backfill: liquefaction does not Occur as a result of seismicity, and hydration of cemented fill is not significantly impeded by closure.

The science of soil mechanics is 100 years old, and rock mechanics is about 80 years old. While methods of analysis and design have been developed and have evolved over time, these are relatively young sciences. The rapid increases in computing power and new technologies have enabled more sophisticated modelling and monitoring. However, there are still many aspects of soil and rock mechanics that are not well understood. Geotechnical failures, which have major consequences, still occur. These consequences may include environmental damage, major production holdups and associated loss of revenue, damage to infrastructure, and loss of life. High-consequence events, which are rare, are more difficult to anticipate and to design for, because by their nature they involve extraordinary circumstances or conditions, often geological in nature. The risks are usually mitigated by conservative designs and monitoring. Detailed geotechnical investigations help us to understand the natural variability of soil and rock masses and identify unusual or unexpected conditions. Investigating and researching major geotechnical failures is essential to enable these unusual circumstances to be anticipated. In the past, severe unanticipated events may have been treated as natural events or ‘acts of God’. However, society now has much greater expectations and it is essential to have policies and procedures in place that enable appropriate management of these rare, high-consequence risks. A good example is the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), which was introduced after the catastrophic dam collapse at Vale’s Corrego de Feijao mine in Brumadinho, Brazil. The address will explain the concepts of uncertainty and variability, and how they should be taken into account in geotechnical design. The challenges facing geotechnical engineers, mine owners, and managers will be discussed. referencing a number of real case studies.

This paper introduces the Quantified Value-created Process (QVP), a decision-making process for use in mine design and operation. The implementation of the QVP is founded on a ten-step rock engineering design process and a ten-step strategic planning process. The potential of this approach is demonstrated by examples of value created as a result of good research, design, and planning. The QVP is divided into two parts, namely, a ‘planning the process’ section and an ‘implementing the process’ section, and can be considered to be an extension of the risk approach. All costs, direct and indirect, associated with a significant mining decision (design, operational, investment) must be quantified in advance of committing to that decision, to determine the value that will be created in the short, medium, and long terms. Ethical values, associated with health, safety, the environment, public perception, and social aspects, may be difficult to quantify in economic terms, but must nevertheless also be considered. In contrast with a traditional risk approach, the QVP will identify the upside, and allow executives to make more informed strategic decisions. In this context it is essential to actively engage upper management in the decision process.

The analysis of angular atypicality of lineaments as an aid to mineral exploration by J. P. G. PRETORI USc, M.Sc. (Pret.) (Visitor) and T. C. PARTRIDGE, Ph.D. (Natal) (Visitor) In an exploration project, data pertaining to 84000 lineaments in an area of 25 000 km2 were recorded. The total length of lineaments in intervals of one degree was determined. Angular intervals with Iow length densities were regarded as atypical. The proportion (by length) of lineaments with such atypical orientation was calculated for 5 km X 5 km grid squares. This index of angular atypicality was contoured and, used in conjunction with conventional photogeological techniques, contributed in a large measure to the success of the investigation.

You probably haven't all had the opportunity of reading it, but you very soon will. I found it interesting to note that the results predicted were surpassed in the operation of the plant to date. The actual results obtained are significantly good, I think. Any process which, in this country, increases production and decreases costs, is to be welcomed, particularly when it is so necessary for South Africa almost to bend over backwards to utilise every avenue available in order to increase the scope of the production for overseas' markets, of her metallurgical and mineral potential. In lighter vein-and there is no reason why we should always be so serious-I am glad to see that, in a scientific journal like this, such words as the American word 'crud' which I have been picked out about so often, because my grandchildren use it, is now given an aura of respectability. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) provides useful information about the composition of an ore sample in terms of quantification of crystalline phases and amorphous content. The use of new, fast detection systems in XRD creates the opportunity to use this technique in modern process control. In the analysis of heavy mineral sands, XRD can identify the main mineral phases, such as ilmenite FeTiO3, rutile TiO2, Zircon ZrSiO4and quartz SiO2, and any other minor components present, such as anatase TiO2, magnetite Fe3O4, haematite Fe2O3or monazite (Ce, REE)PO4. Quantitative analysis is possible by various classical methods such as straight line or polynomial calibration with standards, but modern quantification analysis techniques such as Rietveld analysis (Bish and Howard, 1988) are attractive alternatives, as they do not require any standards or monitors. These methods offer impressive accuracy and speed of analysis. The Rietveld method compares calculated versus experimentally derived X-ray powder diffraction patterns for the sum of all crystalline phases. Another analysis technique offering great benefit to mining industries is cluster analysis. Enormous amounts of XRD measurement data are generated during the process control and material evaluation. New ways of handling such vast amounts of data are required to produce meaningful information for the end users. Cluster analysis greatly simplifies the analysis of a large amount of data from different processes or different raw materials, and automatically sorts closely related scans of an experiment into clusters and marks the most representative scan of each cluster as well as outlying patterns. The use of cluster analysis to evaluate the XRD data allows fast and reliable tracking of the process. It is the most economical procedure to have automatic data evaluation without involving any dedicated personnel in the process. Details of the techniques used, sample optimization methodologies, results, data precision and limitations will be discussed. The approach has potential as a relatively inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterization of heavy minerals sand materials.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) data was extracted from various sources to develop qualitative ternary and tetrahedral plots differentiating mineralogy, bond work index (BWi) and hardness of ore bodies at different mine sites. A large number of historic reports and compiled characterization laboratory data were used to create a searchable "data lake." The data lake provides a means to locate, consolidate, and visually represent XRD from disparate sources. Visualizations with large amounts of mineral ore XRD characterization data provide a qualitative assessment of ore properties, including comminution qualities such as material hardness. The visual map can be employed to quickly estimate expected ore character and behavior, given XRD analysis of samples from newly characterized and unfamiliar ore. The features of smelting slags from South African prehistoric sites and of related cinder material are described. Chemical analyses of twelve slag samples found in the Transvaal, Swaziland, and Botswana are reported and discussed. An attempt is made to establish a relationship between these slags and the ores collected at the Early Iron Age site of Broederstroom, which date between AD 350 and AD 600. The liquidus temperatures of29 slags were determined by the use oh hot-stage microscope. The major mineral phases of 16 slags were identified by X-ray diffraction and microscopic examination. It appears that the slags investigated were formed at temperatures below 1250°C or - in some cases - at temperatures only marginally in excess of 1250°C.
