Strict implementation of International Standards for representative sampling of coal is difficult for routine monitoring, due to time, technical, and economic constraints. A large percentage of the total sampling variance arises from errors accumulated during the earliest stages of sample collection. Modified procedures on the precision of the final result leads to controversies between the sellers and customers for coal. Manual collection of coal samples violates the principle of correct sampling, that all fragments must have an equiprobable chance of being in the sample. In addition, manual size reduction of large numbers of samples is time consuming and involves human errors. A coal quality management procedure in alignment with the relevant ISO standards that describes the sampling protocol has been implemented, and current sampling and laboratory analysis of coal from base load mines (mines situated at the mouth of the power station) are well established. For import coal, sampling is performed during unloading by auto-mechanical sampling (AMS). Due to logistical and safety issues associated with multiple suppliers, Eskom opted for the coal to be sampled at source on a pre-certification basis. Online analysers provide a fast, accurate, real-time method of determining the total moisture and elemental composition of coal and is important to the coal industry for pricing, quality control, and reduction of SO2 emissions. Elemental analyses include S, Si, Al, Fe, Ca, Na, Mg, Mn, Ti, K and Cl. Measurement of S is dictated by the control of SO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants. Elements such as Na and Cl have adverse effects on boilers, causing fouling and slagging. Available online elemental analyser technologies include prompt gamma neutron activation analyses (PGNAA), recommended for major element determination, and pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis(PFTNA), that is capable of measuring the major and minor chemical elements contained in coal. These systems utilize nuclear reactions to produce characteristic gamma rays that are used for identifying various chemical elements. By acquiring the gamma rays in three different time windows, there is a significant reduction of the background as compared with the spectra taken with a radio isotopic source.

"There are numerous factors that affect open stope stability and often result in falls of ground. These falls of ground can be attributed to factors such as beam failure due to a larger than normal roof area (hydraulic radius too large), adverse ground conditions, seismicity, the stress-strain environment, absence of support, and poor drill-and-blast practices. The effect of time on the stability of open stopes is sometimes underestimated and is relatively unknown, especially on Target Mine. Actual data was collected from open stopes at Target and analysed to show the effect of time on open stope stability. The benefits of this analysis will include improved understanding of time-dependent failure, which can assist in reducing dilution and the risk of sterilization of future mining blocks. IntroductionTarget Mine is situated adjacent to the town of Allanridge, some 20 km from Welkom in South Africa’s Free State Province, and is the most northerly mine in the Welkom Goldfields area (Figure 1). The mine consists of a single surface shaft system with a sub-shaft (Target 1C shaft) and a decline. Ownership was attained by Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited in May 2004 (Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited, 2010). Before discussing the selection of open stopes for the back-analyses, a brief explanation of open stoping as practiced at Target Mine will be given. The orebody is some 180 m in thickness and 270 m wide and comprises multiple reefs overlying one another. The 180 m thick reef package is termed the Eldorado Reefs, as shown in Figure 2. The Eldorado Reefs suboutcrop against the Dreyerskuil Reefs, as shown in Figure 3. The dip of the reef varies from as low as 10° in the west to 75° in the east.Compared with most Australian and Canadian open stoping mining operations, Target Mine is unique. In most Australian and Canadian mining operations the hangingwall and footwall of the open stopes comprise waste rock, and the orebody dips relatively steeply. Due to the depth of Target Mine, some 2300 m to 2500 m below surface, a destress slot (Figure 4) is mined to create an artificial, shallow mining environment whereby the field stress is managed and kept at values of around 60 MPa. The destress slot comprises a narrow tabular stope with an average width of 1.5 m, and is mined on the Dreyerskuil Reefs.At Target Mine the hangingwall, sidewalls, and footwall of the open stopes all comprise reef of different grades, except for the EA1, where the EB footwall is waste rock. If a stope, for example, is mined alongside an existing old stope, the western sidewall of this stope will consist of backfill. The general mining direction of open stopes is from the lowest position of the reef on the west, progressing up towards the east as shown in Figure 5."

Refractory gold-containing concentrates usually contain gold enclosed in sulphides as well as in rock-forming minerals. Another difficulty is that gold often occurs as very fine inclusions of several micrometres, and even smaller than 1 micrometre, or can be part of the mineral composition at the structure level. Processing of such concentrates is a challenge. Ultrafine grinding and further oxidation are applied for gold liberation. The paper deals with the results from the study of gold deportment using Qemscan, and atmospheric oxidation testwork involving Albion Process™ on a gold-containing concentrate with a high content of refractory gold in sulphides and gangue minerals. Albion process testing was performed at Institute TOMS with the participation of Glencore Technology Pty Ltd (Australia). Additionally, conventional cyanidation testwork was carried out for the concentrate processing. As an alternative technology of gold liberation, oxidising roasting with arsenic stabilisation was used. The results from the study make it possible to assess the efficiency of the above-mentioned methods of gold liberation, and applicability of Albion technology to recover gold from the refractory concentrate. A Honeywell TDC 2000 central process control system was installed at Rössing in 1984. The system controls the metallurgical operations from crushing to the finished product of uranium oxide and manufacture of sulphuric acid. The operation was previously controlled from nine separate local control rooms. The paper briefly reviews the design and commissioning of the control system on an operating plant and discusses the impact on manpower organisation and training needs. Development of the process control system during its first two years of operation is reviewed and a summary is given of the current status of computer control at Rössing. The impact of the new system on overall plant operation and performance efficiency is also briefly described. In conclusion, future developments of computer control and overall optimisation of metallurgical operations are reviewed.

Tasked with developing a flow sheet for a new resource, one typically turns the experts for help. The advice of an expert can be invaluable in reducing the time and costs associated with characterizing an ore (not to mention extracting maximum information from limited samples). While guiding and optimizing a metallurgical concept study requires a certain skill set, selling a project is something different. The metallurgical specialist is usually not responsible for sharing the results of investigations with potential investors. However, the person responsible for selling the project can ensure that a metallurgical concept study is conducted thoroughly and responsibly without having the ability to do the work, while being sufficiently familiar with the metallurgical aspects to authoritatively sell the project. The process of identifying suitable process routes through to constructing a concept flow sheet and mass balance is discussed as a basic example. From basic mineralogical information and a thorough literature survey, the most likely beneficiation routes can be identified and targeted testing conducted. The final top size will depend on the required product properties (mainly grade), the selected beneficiation technology, and the ore?s liberation properties. Once the required top size has been identified, comminution options can be evaluated. Once again, literature surveys can be used to supplement concept-level comminution property information, and select possible equipment and circuit configurations. Marketing, material handling, and logistics-related information can be used to determine required dewatering technologies. At this stage, enough information is available to develop a concept mass balance and conduct basic equipment sizing..

This paper presents recent advancements in the MillMapper software technology, developed and used for thickness gauging of liners of cylindrical grinding mills used for mineral comminution. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces with millimetre accuracy. The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and its numerous advantages over existing techniques and the value it adds to operations are presented. These are followed by discussion of recently-implemented innovations, including improved visualisation and inspection tools, automatic ball charge volume measurement and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement. Results from its application at several sites in Australia are presented throughout.

The Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) is a joint venture between Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited and Royal Bafokeng Resources (Pty) Ltd (Bafokeng). The mining lease has been granted over Boschkoppie 104JQ and is located approximately 10km south of the Pilanesberg Alkaline Complex. The Merensky Reef, which constitutes the principal ore body, is geologically complex. A relationship between its geological variability and the associated mineralisation has been established by defining a number of facies types. The Merensky Reef has been sub-divided into seven distinct facies types: the pegmatoidal facies, contact facies, FW1 pothole facies, FW3pothole facies, FW6 pothole facies, and FW7 pothole facies. The Merensky Reef, which does not form part of the potholed reef, has a large component of footwall mineralisation. The pothole facies, in contrast, has mineralisation located in the hangingwall. Statistical analysis of the facies types indicates that they are unique populations and hence need to be evaluated independently. The mining lease has distinct structural domains that have added additional complications to evaluation of the Merensky Reef. The Merensky facies on BRPM exhibit unique geological and statistical characteristics within well-defined structural blocks. Due to the extreme variability of the Merensky Reef on BRPM a unique approach has been developed, within Anglo Platinum, to evaluate the deposit. Mining cuts are defined and composited for the individual facies types, and then modelled individually by applying known geological controls. The resultant grade models are weighted based on statistical and local geological knowledge. The object of weighting the facies is to replicate the variability observed in the ore body. The introduction of stringent geological controls to the evaluation process has resulted in increased confidence in the in situgrades estimated as an input to the mine planning process

Visit to the Datsun Nissan Company's body pressing and assembly plant at Rosslyn, Pretoria, and the Claremont-Danville Tunnel on 27th February, 1970. The excursion arranged for the 27th February to the Datsun Nissan motor car assembly plant at Rosslyn, near Pretoria, in the morning and the Claremont-Danville tunnel in the afternoon was well supported by some 43 members. The visitors were met at the factory by Mr Rademeyer, the Industrial Relations Manager, and members of his staff and were taken to the artisan training centre for light refreshments. There is a well-equipped training section with an air-conditioned lecture hall; we were told that such training facilities were important because of the cosmopolitan nature of the artisan staff. The visitors were divided into small parties and taken to the tool die and jig-making section, which is perhaps the key department for a factory of this nature. There the many dies for the presses in the body pressing section, as well as the complicated jigs for body welding are made. The technique for making the castings for the dies is interesting. A polystyrene model of the casting is embedded in moulding sand. In a neighbouring foundry molten metal is pressed into the headers and burns away the polystyrene, which leaves no residue, and this exactly fills the space occupied by the model. This rough casting is then machined in large copying machines (costing as much as Rl80 000). An exact plastic model of the surface of the pressing required, set up in juxtaposition to this casting is traversed by a master stylus which operates the slave milling cutter, thereby machining the surface to close tolerances. The machined casting is cleaned up by hand and finally finished in large spotting machines, using a blue dye to show up high spots, to the fine degree of accuracy required. The body pressing section was next visited. There the large number of pressed parts which make up a vehicle body are pressed out of special deep drawing steel plate. Some of the largest presses were capable of applying a pressure of 1 200 tons and cost as much as Rl85 000 each. The visitors then followed through to the assembly section where jigs are used to hold together the many pressings, which are then spot welded into body frames. The frames go to an assembly line where they are finished to the stage for painting. The continuous crawl painting assembly line carries the frames through all the stages of prime coating with zinc phosphate sprayed on in a tunnel, followed by immersion of the lower parts in a priming bath, then drying and spray painting and baking in tunnels. The body frames, after painting, join another assembly line, where the doors, upholstery and many fittings are attached. After this stage the completed bodies are lowered onto and attached to the chassis units which are largely assembled from imported parts (engines, transmission units, etc.). From the end of the line the completed cars are driven off to the trial track and then pass through a tunnel with powerful water sprays to detect leaks in the body work. The proportion of locally made parts is just on 45 per cent. An interesting aspect of the assembly organization is that, of the 140 or 160 cars completed each day there may be included some of each of the Datsun model as well as some Renault and Alfa Romeo models models which are assembled by this company. The change from one model to another several times a day does not present any difficulty to the organization. Each section of the assembly plant 'buys' the units from the preceeding section and 'sells' to the succeeding section. This means that the responsibility of each section ends when the unit is sold to the next section. The cost of repairing any faults found subsequently is charged to the section where it is found, which puts a powerful emphasis on meticulous inspections between sections to safeguard their costs. After the tour the parties assembled at the lecture hall where a lavish cold buffet luncheon was provided by the company. After luncheon Mr A. R. C. Fowler, on behalf of the Institute, thanked the Managing Director, Mr W. J. Wilson and his staff for this most interesting and well organized visit. The party then left for the Claremont-Danville tunnel. The tunnel is being driven by General Mining Federale Kontrakteurs through the Daspoort Range, Pretoria, to link the suburbs of Danville, near Iscor, and Claremont, which at present can only be reached by a nine mile detour. It is estimated that some 6000 vehicles per day will use the tunnel. Before entering the tunnel a short talk was given by Mr Ross who is in charge of operations. Recent developments in survey techniques and measuring equipment now allow for an accurate assessment of external coating condition and cathodic protection performance. These developments build on 20 years of experience of using Direct Current Voltage Gradient (DCVG) and Close Interval Potential Survey (CIPS) methods. The techniques use the latest advances in measurement systems coupled to a bespoke data processing system. The paper describes tests and trial surveys carried out on a hydrocarbon transmission pipeline in West Africa during 2005. The survey works described and conclusions drawn are from the data collected. Of particular interest are the apparent capacitance effects which are thought to occur under disbonded coating and the characteristics that these may show on the integrated CIPS and recorded DCVG profiles. This paper was originally presented at the Cefracor conference in Aix, France, in June 2006 The pipeline was originally installed on a phased basis between 1989 and 1994. The external coatings were three layer polyethylene factory coating and shrink sleeve field joint coating. An impressed current cathodic protection system was installed. The pipeline has subsequently been affected by disbondment of the coatings. It was a primary objective of the trials to attempt to identify such affected areas. In addition to a technically detailed account of the survey works undertaken and the results obtained the authors will consider the practical and commercial aspects of these surveys with input that provides a perspective from the specifier, pipeline surveyor, pipeline operations personnel and the pipeline owner. It is intended that the data presented will provide greater awareness of the benefits and limitations of the techniques used and their role for both stand-alone interpretation and the integration of the survey information with other inspection methods used for external corrosion assessment. The application of the described techniques is well developed and proven to locate and characterise through?coating defects and to provide a full audit of cathodic protection status. However, the possibility of the techniques being able to indicate disbonded coating is unproven and further tests and trials are planned which may allow a greater understanding of the electrical characteristics which are believed to be associated with disbonded coatings which may or may not be filled with an electrolyte. Further work is currently planned in West Africa, South Africa and Scotland in order to improve the understanding of this technique and to determine if the reported indications do actually represent a method of locating disbonded coatings. This paper is based on the Townlands Ore Replacement Project whereby the concept of conventional sinking of one large diameter shaft was declined and replaced with three smaller raise bored shafts. A wire line geophysical survey was done and the results indicated that a single shaft larger then 4 m diameter unsupported would not be suitable. The shafts were placed 28 meters apart measured from centre to centre. To ensure that the skin to skin pillars between the shafts remained regular and to minimise any deflection, the pilot holes were drilled with the Rotary Vertical Drilling System. The different shaft sinking methodologies are discussed explaining the risk associated with each method.

"The static recrystallization behaviour of Ti-Nb microalloyed high-strength steel during hot deformation was studied by conducting double-hit hot compression experiments using a Gleeble-3500 thermomechanical simulator. The effects of deformation temperature, strain rate, strain, and initial austenite grain size on the static recrystallization fraction are discussed. The static recrystallization kinetics were modelled, and the results show that the static recrystallization fraction increased with deformation temperature, strain rate, and strain and interpass time. The static recrystallization activation energy Qs was 326.05 kJ mol-1. Comparison of the experimental results and predicted results indicates that the effects of deformation parameters on the static recrystallization in multistage hot deformation are significant. The predicted results are in good agreement with the experimental results. IntroductionIn hot-forming processes, complex microstructures are often induced by multiple hot deformation mechanisms (Zhang et al., 2014; Liang et al., 2015). The softening behaviour during hot processing has generated considerable interest because component properties are influenced significantly by the corresponding microstructural evolution (Wu et al., 2010). It is well known that dynamic recrystallization (DRX); metadynamic recrystallization (MDRX), which occurs by the growth of DRX nuclei during intervals of deformation; and static recrystallization (SRX), which occurs by nucleation and growth during the intervals of deformation, can significantly alter the austenite grain size (Chen et al., 2015. Chen, Sui, and Cui, 2014; Mao et al., 2014). The long interpass times allow complete SRX to take place if the steel is being rolled above the interpass recrystallization stop temperature (Tnr), i.e. in the absence of carbonitride precipitation (Siciliano, 2000). In recent research, microalloying technology coupled with new-generation thermomechanical control processing (NG-TMCP) has proved efficient in achieving the proper balance between strength, toughness, ductility, and formability by means of a suitable combination of chemical composition and thermomechanical treatment parameters (Shukla et al., 2012; Bandyopadhyay et al., 2011). The alloying elements Nb, V, Ti are widely used in high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel to achieve the desired strength and toughness properties with solid-solution strengthening, precipitation hardening, grain refinement, and dislocation strengthening (Opiela, 2014; Chen and Yu, 2012). The wide applicability of alloying elements in HSLA steel is due to the fact that heat treatments are not required after forming of the parts, which results in time and cost savings."

"In the case of feasibility assessments or feasibility studies, an important point of discussion is often how to calculate the capital (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) of a plant. Generally, there is also the request to know how the CAPEX varies when the size of the plant is increased. Nowadays, many databases give an indication of specific equipment costs in relation to the production rate. These data are based on cost information from equipment suppliers and have to be continuously updated by the owner of the database. The approach presented here is a model which allows sizing of process equipment, for example a leach tank, based on process data in combination with the calculation of mechanical properties. Furthermore, it calculates the CAPEX based on construction material cost and adequate machining surcharges. Thus, a single cost model for a leach tank is adequate for both copper and other hydrometallurgical plants and stays valid with changing construction material prices. To summarize, the advantage of this model is the more versatile approach and thus the flexibility due to the inclusion of design aspects, process and mechanical engineering aspects and an updatable database. The database, which is in regard to material cost and is the basis for the cost estimation, is easily updatable from commonly accessible data. This model thus approaches the procedures of an engineering company when designing a plant and executing a cost calculation. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgy nowadays plays an important role in processing of primary and secondary resources. In copper metallurgy, hydrometallurgy accounts for roughly 20 % of worldwide primary production, especially in the case of oxide or low copper-containing ores. Zinc smelters changed their method of production from a pyrometallurgical-dominated concept decades ago to mainly hydrometallurgical routes today. Gold production processes using leaching, especially, have a long history without any development which would not be competitive if not based on hydrometallurgical concepts (Pawlek, 1983; Winnacker-Küchler, 2006)."

Mineral processing efficiency depends on various factors and among them includes head grade fluctuations feeding the processing plant. Head grades can fluctuate beyond an admissible range, implying in recovery decrease for the mineral of interest. Grades feeding the processing plant depend on the geological domain which is being mined and on the mining schedule. Therefore, it is necessary to keep grade variability controlled. Blending piles are an efficient alternative to reduce grade fluctuations. The main factors influencing blending efficiency are the pile size or its mass and the number of layers used to pile up. Large piles are more efficient to reduce variability, however, there are economical and operational limits associated with them. This study investigates a methodology to analyse the ideal pile size to reach an acceptable variability given the in situ grade fluctuations. Geostatistical simulations provide the means to assess grade variability using an optimized mining schedule. These block grades are used to simulate any given pile throughout the mine`s life. The methodology was illustrated using a case study to control coal ash content at a mine supplying ROM coal to a power plant. Keywords: homogenization, piles, geostatistical simulation.

From the point of view of the environmental impact created, dimension stone mining is a relatively benign industry. There are no emissions besides those of the diesel powered earthmoving equipment utilised in its extraction and a small amount of blasting gases. Contamination of water resources is only likely in the event of petrochemical spillages from storage facilities and equipment, and these can largely be either prevented or cleaned up effectively. The major environmental impacts are of a visual nature, while in sensitive areas, habitat destruction and the destruction of archaeological heritage may become significant impacts. The dimension stone industry has grown at an average rate of over 7% per annum since 1986, and is forecast to continue growing at this rate for the foreseeable future. The cumulative environmental impact of the industry will thus become more significant over time. This paper discusses the environmental impacts of dimension stone mining and recommends effective means for dealing with the practical aspects of reclamation and mine closure in dimension stone mining within the context of environmentally responsible business practices. The discussion focuses mainly on the operations of the Finstone Group in Southern Africa, which are considered to be world leaders in the application of environmental management within the dimension stone mining industry, although reference is also made to other situations which the authors have encountered at dimension stone quarries around the world.

In 2002 the commissioning of an ilmenite smelter on the North Coast of South Africa was extended by three months due to the failure and subsequent replacement of the magnesia-based refractory lining. The lining failed due to the hydration of magnesia caused by an unexpected source of water. The incident resulted in significant financial losses and a prolonged insurance claim which was settled in 2009. As magnesia-based refractories are used extensively in both ferrous and non-ferrous applications, the authors of the paper want to share the experience gained from this incident with others. The paper reviews the literature available on furnace start-up practices and explains the hydration of magnesia using available sources. The incident is studied in more detail, both technically and economically, and the costs incurred are quantified in terms of the cost of the original lining. The paper concludes with lessons learned and recommendations made for future work. The intention of the paper is to stimulate open debate regarding best practices in preheating of furnaces lined primarily with magnesia. Keywords Commissioning, hydration, start-up, magnesia.

Most of the Au and PGM ores in Russia are characterised by a thin mineral impregnation of noble metals in sulfide minerals, and a large variety of mineral forms that lead to high loss of precious metals with fine fractions during flotation. In modern flotation technology, the rational choice of reagents is one of the main trends for selective separation of minerals and effective metals recovery. New data on the selectivity of the thermo-sensitive polymer with specific functional groups (TMPPh) as a flocculant and collector of Au and Pt fine fractions are available. The selective modified collector (DEDTCm) for the recovery of Au and Pt from complex ores is discussed in this paper. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEAM), laser SIM and AFM microscopy, UV and IR spectroscopy were applied to study the adsorbed layer of new reagents on the mineral surface. Flotation tests of TMPPh on the gold-bearing ore of the Olimpiada deposit showed an increase in Au extraction and Au content in the concentrate of the rougher flotation. Using a combination of reagents TMPPh and ButX, the quality of the Au and Pt concentrates increased in 1.7 time with an increase in recovery up to 15 % compared with the traditional reagent mode. Testing of TMPPh polymers in flotation of Pt-Cu-Ni ore at Norilsk Nickel has shown the ability to obtain a concentrate with a higher Pt content. Recovery of platinum is 17% higher than recovery in an experiment without polymer. Application of DEDTCm helped to achieve higher technological parameters in flotation of lowgrade Rt-Cu-Ni ore. Compared to the basic mode Pt recovery was plus 13%, Pd recovery was plus 9% and the content of precious metals in the rougher flotation concentrate increased in 2,5 - 4 times. Kaolin is one of the most important ingredients in porcelain manufacturing. Its main phase is clay mineral containing aluminum hydrosilicate, namely kaolinite. Beside kaolinite it also contains quartz, illite and feldspars, which impair its applicability. Kaolin is a non-reactive material, but metakaolin can be produced by heat treatment (calcination) of kaolin, which is also used by the cement and concrete industry due to its latent hydraulic (pozzolanic) properties. Beside thermal activation, reactive materials can also be produced by mechanochemical activation in general. This paper deals with the mechanochemical activation of kaolin. The raw material was classified into various size fractions, then ground in a batch stirred media mill under varying circumstances (residence time, circumferential velocity). After grinding, the structural changes of the products were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, the particle size distribution of the ground material was determined by laser scattering. As a result of the grinding experiments and analytical measurements of the products, it can be clearly seen that reactivity of kaolin can be improved significantly by mechanical activation in a stirred media mill, but due to its high energy density the circumstances were optimised carefully to avoid aggregation.
