Mr Vegter has analysed, in some depth, the approximations made in the treatment of the kinetic data presented in the original by ourselves (ref.1) and has come to the conclusion that ?under the experimental conditions used by Adams and Nicol (1986) the steady-state assumption was inaccurate?. We are acutely aware of the fact that the experimental method adopted does not permit the attainment of a true steady-state in the elution reactor. However, this does not eliminate the attainment of a pseudo steady-state by a suitable choice of the experimental parameters with the accompanying simplification of the analysis of the data with the aim of drawing the reader?s attention to the most important objective of the paper viz. the effect of various operating parameters on the rate of elution of gold.

This paper reports on studies that have been done on the electrical conduction in silicon, ferro silicon, and charge chrome furnaces. A system has been developed that can distinguish between normal resistive conduction and arcing, and this was used to quantify in particular the relative amount of arcing that takes place in these furnaces. It was found that silicon and ferro silicon behave similarly and exhibit a relatively large amount of arcing. Charge chrome on the other hand exhibits considerably less arcing, and the extent of this arcing is highly correlated with the tapping of the furnace. The arcing measurements can also be used online in the control of the furnace, both for the electrodes and electrical circuit, and for the raw materials.

Since 1994, South Africa has been the subject of international attention, especially in regard to its transformation initiatives, which aim to redress the post-apartheid imbalances. Mining, as a major employer and one of the major industries in South Africa, has been the focus of the government?s Black Economic Empowerment initiative with the introduction of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the Broad?Based Socio?Economic Empowerment Charter for the South African Mining Industry. The historical background to South Africa?s transformation and the role of the mining industry are pivotal to an appreciation of certain aspects of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the Broad?Based Socio?Economic Empowerment Charter for the South African Mining Industry. The issues around Black Economic Empowerment and the enabling of a smooth transition to the South African mining industry of the future are explored in this paper.

The principles of microwave heating are discussed with reference to dielectric properties, heating phenomena and microwave equipment. Microwave regeneration of granular activated carbon for the carbon-in-pulp process is examined on a laboratory scale, with special attention being given to highlight the problem areas and specific considerations related to microwave heating. Results indicate that microwave regeneration of carbon with 40% moisture on a wet basis by heating to 650°C with steam addition regenerates the carbon to virgin carbon activity levels but with a higher abrasion resistance. A preliminary economic assessment showed that the capital cost for 120 kg/h microwave unit would be R540 000 with an annual operating cost of R 320/t carbon. These figures yield a return on investment of 12%. The aim of this paper is to provide an introduction to microwave heating and to illustrate its application to the microwave regeneration of granular activated carbon for the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process.

Longwall panels facing wind blasts have been investigated at both Newstan and Moonee Collieries in the Newcastle Coalfield under the Wind Blast Project of the School of Mining Engineering, The University of New South Wales. The fluid mechanics involved in the compression and expulsion of air during wind blasts have been defined and the overpressure and air velocity time histories utilized to determine the wind blast parameters and define the relationship between them. The characteristics of wind blasts pressure pulses in mine roadways show some similarity with transient phenomenon like air blasts from explosives and shock waves from the failure of pressurized vessels. The peak wind velocities in roadways, however, exhibit marked deviations from theoretical predictions based on compressible fluid flow and Rankine-Hugoniot relationships applied to goaf air displacement and panel geometry. Peak overpressures and wind velocities have shown a positive correlation with the areas of goaf falls, with the values peaking off for larger areas. The field investigations have helped the mine management in risk assessment and in evaluating the success of induced caving by hydrofracturing to mitigate the hazard.

Mud rushes are hazardous occurrences that have occurred frequently in mines in South Africa, and have been the cause of numerous fatalities in the past. Mud rush incidents not associated with accidents are believed to be common occurrences that are not generally reported. Many such incidents are probably associated with the operation of chutes and box fronts. This paper describes the conditions necessary for mud rush occurrences, postulated mud rush mechanisms, and methods of combating the mud rush hazard.

The thermodynamic activity of MnO was measured in MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slags that are typically encountered in the production of manganese-containing stainless steels. A gas equilibration-quenching technique was employed in measuring the activities. Activities of Mn in Pt-Mn alloys were redetermined at 1600ºC, which reconfirmed earlier results of strong negative deviations. MnO activities were then measured by equilibrating slags of various compositions based on a statistical experimental design procedure with Pt-Mn alloys under controlled partial pressure of oxygen in MnO saturated platinum crucibles at 1600ºC. Activities of MnO were found to increase with increasing concentration of MnO, basicity and CaO to MgO ratio. Two multi-coefficient regression models were developed to predict the activities and activity coefficients of MnO in slags at 1600ºC. Keywords: activity, MnO, slag

A quality characteristic analysed through construction of the Shewhart control chart is required to be normally distributed. In mining applications, this assumption is often violated as many quality characteristics follow skewed or lognormal distribution. In this paper, two methods were investigated using a heuristic approach for setting up the control limits for a skewed population. Based on these approaches a Mode chart, and a Weighted Variance (WV) control charts were constructed. The performance of the proposed methods was compared with the normal based Shewhart method through a case study conducted in a surface mine supplying iron ore to a steel plant. A simulation study was also conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methods over the Shewhart method. The study revealed that the Shewhart control charts generated more out of control alarms compared with the Mode and Weighted Variance control charts for a skewed population of Fe%. The simulation results also revealed that for extremely high skewed population, the WV control chart and Mode control chart provided higher probability of coverage than the Shewhart method; although the detection rate (probability of detection) of out of control condition for these methods was slightly reduced compared with Shewhart method.

This paper investigates the performance of the neural network technique in a placer deposit situated at the Nome district in Alaska. Initially a single neural network model was constructed to estimate the gold grade. However, at a later stage, an ensemble model consisting of multiple networks was also constructed via the Adaboost algorithm. The reason behind the use of the ensemble model of the Adaboost algorithm was to examine if the ensemble model provided superior performance to the single neural network. As indicated by other studies, Adaboost did not have a better performance than a single neural network in this specific application. This may be due to the high noise inherent in the gold data used in this project. Consequently R2 values of gold prediction are also poor for both the single and multiple networks.

The acoustic signals emitted from a laboratory-scale ball mill were used for the estimation of the comminution of two complex sulphide ores, viz. Merensky and UG2 ores from the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The digital acoustic signals were transformed to power spectral densities that could be related to particle size distributions (-75 µm to 4000 µm) in the mill by use of continuum regression. This approach is more general than principal component regression methods or Kalman filtering used previously and resulted in significantly more accurate calibration in the case of the Merensky ore, where approximately 93.4% of the variance in the particle size distributions could be explained. With fewer data available, the variance in the particle size distributions in the UG2ore could be explained less accurately (82.4%), but still satisfactorily. In addition, smaller particle sizes (less than 300 µm) could be modelled more accurately in the case of the UG2 ore.

Globalization creates investment opportunities for enterprises around the world. Attracting foreign investment has been a key challenge for economic growth in developing countries. Corruption, political instability, armed conflict, and other internal problems affect foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows negatively. A framework of criteria provides a basis for comparing non-commercial risk (NCR) among twenty-three mineral economies. Countries competing for foreign direct investment inflows are ranked from least to most risky. This study compares Inward FDI Performance Index (IND) with NCR ratings in developing countries and shows that risk is increasingly mitigated by means of appropriately structured insurance. Given the option for countries with similar mineral potential, investors will generally invest in the country that offers lower non-commercial risk. Raw material fed into a processing or refining plant is required to be uniform in composition for several reasons. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to the process. The problem is more complicated in the case of multiple ore sources. The idea behind the research is that theoretical blending ratios can serve not only to meet predefined specific criteria but also to reduce grade fluctuations of variables under consideration. In this paper, the problem is formulated as a quadratic programming problem, whose objective function is in quadratic form and constraints are linear. A case study was conducted on a data set from an iron orebody to demonstrate the technique. The objective was to minimize the blend variability in terms of each variable (in this study, iron, silica, alumina and lime) grade of ores extracted in three different production faces. The stockpile capacity, lower and upper limits of each variable satisfying operational requirements and non-negativity were constrained to the model. A modified simplex method developed by Wolfe was used for solving the blending and homogenization problem. The promising results can be used as apart of the stacking and reclaiming design. In past years, Chile has been the largest copper producer in the world and for 2002 mining represented country average of 10 % of the GDP, accounting for 47 % of the total exportation. As copper sulphides are the main mining resources in the country, the metal is produced using the classical processes of flotation and pyrometallurgical extraction. Seven copper smelter plants, which extends from the northern Atacama desert to the central part of the country produced1,522,000 metric tons of fine copper in 2002, approximately one half of total copper concentrate production, with a notorious environmental impact due to the great amount of slag produced during these extraction steps. In this work, a global characterization of copper pyrometallurgical slags produced and disposed of in Chile and worldwide is done, and the concept of total project development is considered to explain the scopes of the study, recovering different compounds and generating new activities around mining. The presentation is completed with the proposal of various methods and techniques being developed today in a joint project between smelter plants and the University of Concepción, with the support of the Chilean government and mining companies, addressed to generate new materials from copper slag. Recovery of copper, molybdenum, precious metals, silica and iron, that is the most abundant component of the slag, are the goals for this research. Metals, commercial compounds, alloys and different forms of iron oxides for steel industry are proposed products.

The mining industry in South Africa has developed its own environmental guidelines in the form of an Aide-Mémoire1,which is an extension of the previous rehabilitation provisions to include all aspects of the environment and all phases of a mining operation. This development, at the time, recognized an international trend towards the formalization of environmental management in mining practice, which resulted from the realization of the large environmental liabilities that mines could face, particularly on closure. Over the past decade the international environmental focus in the mining industry has moved from operational management, to the reduction of liability on mine closure. Mine closure guidelines are being developed internationally by nations (for example, SRK, 19982) and by large mining groups (for example, Rio Tinto, 19983). In South Africa the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) is presently reviewing the Aide-Mémoire to bring it in line with international and local developments and a separate mine closure plan is being considered.

This paper presents computations of the electric field inside a furnace. We first look at the effect of contact between two coke particles from an electrical point of view. We give values for the amount of contact resistance in the total resistance of the system formed by the two coke particles. We show that the effect of contact resistance decreases rapidly with increasing contact area. We then look at the complete electric field inside a full scale furnace. The aim is to evaluate the amount of current that short-cuts the metal bath for different vertical positions of the electrodes. We show that electrodes high above the metal bath are undesirable since they offer a larger surface of conductive charge materials where current can flow through. On the other hand, deeper electrodes force the current to go the whole way down to the metal bath. Ohmic heating along this path ensures a high temperature of coke and slag that are beneficial for metal recovery.
