Considerable current interest is evident[l,2] in the use of transient electromagnetic methods for subsurface remote sensing. A transient method is discussed which uses a periodic video-type pulse containing a wide frequency range. A video pulse is used as an interrogating signal both for "target" identification and detection for relatively short depth (c 20 meters) applications in soil and soft rock media. If the medium is favorable, e.g., hard rock, greater depth applications appear to be feasible. The same procedures would be applicable for deep geological exploration but would require a substantial reduction in frequency and increase in target size. It should be noted that video pulse generators with 35 kv peak voltage and nanoseconds base widths are now within the state-of-the-art, thus significant power over broad spectral ranges is possible. In the design of a video pulse sounding system, 5 main problem areas can be identified; 1 ) selection of the pulse shape or spectral content of the video pulse, 2) design of a radiating structure which effectively couples such a pulse into the medium, 3) isolation of the radiating and receiving mechanisms, 4) realistically accounting for the dispersion and attentuation of the medium and the air-medium interface, and 5) interpretation or processing of the received signal waveform. Each of these problem areas will be discussed and illustrated with experimental and/or theoretical results. The Video Pulse Selection of the proper video pulse signal is dictated by 3 considerations, the maximum desired depth of penetration, the attenuation of the medium and the required resolution and size of the target. For a lossy medium, penetration and resolution are clearly at cross purposes and a compromise is necessary. The exact nature of the compromise is dictated by the application, but the spectrum of the video pulse should not contain any frequencies higher than the predicted cut-off, i.e., that frequency which is attenuated to the threshold level of the receiver. This study presents a historic overview of the role of mobile roof support (MRS) technologies in improving stability and worker safety and presents the results of recent field evaluations of the MRS load rate monitoring device and other remote deformation-monitoring techniques. Field studies were implemented at two sites in cooperation among researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Maleki Technologies, Inc., and J. H. Fletcher & Co. The objective of the field programs were to (1) study the interaction between MRS’s and coal mine strata and (2) develop and test suitable monitoring systems for assessing roof and pillar stability. An MRS consists of a roof canopy, four hydraulic cylinders, a caving shield canopy, and associated electromechanical systems mounted on crawler tracks. The machines are controlled by radio from a remote location and operate on self-contained power units. Typically, MRS’s have capacities of 5,340 and 7,120 kN (600 and800 tons). In comparison to posts, an MRS is capable of maintaining the yield load after significant amounts of roof-floor deformation. Because the mining cycle is accelerated, MRS’s help reduce the potential for time-dependent roof falls. MRS performance has been monitored in the laboratory under controlled static loading conditions and in the field under deep, two-seam mining conditions. Laboratory studies have quantified support capacity and system stiffness as a function of machine height. Field investigations have focused on determination of optimum operating conditions and development of warning systems that indicate excessive load on the machine and/or impending roof-pillar stability problems. Analyses of field data show that roof instabilities are influenced by (1) pillar failure, (2) pillar yielding, (3) mine seismicity, (4)geologic structures, and (5) panel layout designs and mining practice.Pillar yielding and failure (unloading) and seismicity can be conveniently monitored by the load rate monitoring device, but for consistent detection of roof falls, additional deformation measurements directly within the cuts are needed.

"According to the dictionary,3 an accident is an event that takes place without one's foresight or expectation, often an undesigned, sudden, and unforeseen occurrence of an afflictive or unfortunate character. However, actual experience with accidents, the second most important cause of death in the United States,4 and a more extensive and scientific inventigation of their causes indicate that from 75 to 90 per cent of accidents are avoidable.5 This is borne out by the results of a three-year study of the accident records of 64,000 motor vehicle operators in New York6 which show that certain drivers are prone to accidents, that accident experience is traceable to certain causes, and that accidents don't just ""happen,"" It is estimated that 97,000 persons were killed by accidents in the United States in 1929 and 15,000,000 were injured. Of these about 23,000 deaths were due to so-called industrial accidents. In a list of accident rates by industries, compiled by the National Safety Council7 from reports of member establishments, mining heads the list, in both frequency (74.43 per 1,000,000 man-hours worked) and severity (9.9 days lost per 1,000 man-hours worked). These figures are very much higher than for any other industry; theindustries showing figures most comparable to mining are meat packing with a frequency rate of 55.94 and a severity rate of 1.47, construction with a frequency rate of 50.41 and a severity rate of 4.62, and refrigeration with a frequency rate of 43.35 and a severity rate of 3.04.While there is no way to determine the actual cost of all accidents from a monetary standpoint, estimates indicate that the cost will run into hundreds of millions of dollars annually.Cost of accidents in metal mines.- The United States Bureau of Mines obtains accurate figures on the number of lost-time nonfatal accidents as well as fatal accidents in the metal-mining industry.8 In 1926 the metal mines employed 127,823 men; 430 men were killed and 30,350 men received lost-time but nonfatal injuries as a result of accidents. Each of these fatal and nonfatal injuries averaged 114 days lost time, computing a fatality as 6,000 days lost time. This is equivalent to 3,523,944 days time lost due to accident, or at $5 per day per man, to a wage loss of $17,619,720. Deducting one-ninth of this figure for compensation paid, the metal miner loses in wage annually about $15,700,000, or about $122 per individual. This average loss per individual includes the cost of fatal accidents reckoned at 6,000 days or $30,000, but even if the loss in time due to fatal accidents be deducted, the average cost to each individual metal miner each year for nonfatal accidents is about $32. Estimating the loss to the metal-mine employer as about the same as that to the employee, the annual cost of metal-mine accidents to the employer is about $15,700,000 and to the employer and miner is $31,400,000."

"ObjectiveDevelop a portable emissions measurement apparatus to sample and measure tailpipe concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (COJ, nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NOJ under steady-state engine load and speed conditions during a 1-minute test.BackgroundThe U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has a comprehensive research program to develop ways to reduce exposure of miners to diesel exhaust pollutants. Engine maintenance has been shown to have important effects on such exposure.Accurate measurements of tailpipe emissions are becoming an essential part of a good maintenance program for underground mines that use diesel-powered vehicles. Past studies of particulates in U.S. underground coal mines have shown that DPM alone may be present at concentrations greater than 1 milligram per cubic meter (mg/m3), half the 2-mg/m3 limit for respirable coal mine dust. A poorly tuned (smoking) diesel engine may be the sole cause for respirable dust concentrations exceeding the limit. Although there is currently no standard specifically for DPM in U.S. mines, regulatory steps are underway, and significant reductions of DPM levels in both coal and metal mines will most likely be required.Tailpipe emission measurements can provide diagnostic information to identify engine malfunctions such as clogged air cleaners, faulty injectors, or incorrect injection timing. In some cases, mine vehicle tailpipe DPM concentrations have been reduced up to 50 percent by engine maintenance and adjustments.An accurate measuring instrument would also be useful for determining the effects of exhaust control devices on tailpipe emissions. Little information is currently available about the overall effectiveness of exhaust controls after long-term use. Raw exhaust concentrations with and without the control device can be measured in underground mines, and from these data a control efficiency can be calculated. Knowledge of the effectiveness of exhaust control devices over time is needed to make intelligent decisions on bow to use and maintain these devices, and when to replace them."

During the period of 10 years from January 1, 1908, to January 1, 1918, approximately 12,850,000 barrels of oil and 5,024,506,000 cubic feet of gas were destroyed by fire in the United States, entailing a total estimated property loss of $25,254,200. During this period 503 fires were reported. As is shown in Plates I and II, 310 of these fires were caused by lightning and 193 by all other causes. The losses from the fires caused by lightning were estimated to be $11, 148,000, and from those due to all other causes $14,106,200. Directly and indirectly, the fires resulted in the deaths of nearly 150 persons and were responsible for almost as many more being permanently disabled. For the past three years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting investigations to determine the nature and the specific causes of these fires, with a view to suggesting means whereby they may be suc- cessfully combatted and, in some places, perhaps eliminated entirely. As the subject of oil and gas fires is necessarily broad, no attempt is made in this bulletin to treat it exhaustively; rather the bulletin aims to point out what has been done by operators in the past, and to describe various fire-prevention methods and fire-fighting appa- ratus which are being used or adopted by many of the larger oil companies. These methods and apparatus, it is believed, if uni- versally employed by operators, will largely decrease the present enormous annual losses. In the discussion of oil-well fires, the methods used in extinguishing several of the larger and more perplexing ones are described. As the right procedure for extinguishing any oil-well fire must be de- termined largely by local conditions, it is not probable that all of the methods used at some one fire, as described, will be applicable to a future fire. However, the operator, from these descriptions, may at least gain suggestions that will greatly assist him in fighting similar fires.

An ozone detector was built and evaluated for its applicability in smog-chamber studies. The detection method is based on the reaction of ozone with ethylene and the measurement of resultant chemiluminescence. In the first phase of evaluation, the detector's response to ozone was studied as a function of several instrument parameters, and optimum conditions were defined for the maximum and most stable responses to ozone. In subsequent evaluations, the method was checked for sensitivity, precision, and interferences and was compared with two alternative methods. Results showed the chemiluminescence method to be acceptably sensitive and precise for smog-chamber studies and superior to the Mast ozone meter and KI (colorimetric 1 percent neutral-potassium iodide method) methods in that it is specific for ozone.

The operation described herein differs from the usual practice in the Tri-State district in two important respects: (1) the ore is loaded into cars which are tramped to the shaft and hoisted on self-dumping cages, and (2) about 30 per cent of the ore is loaded by power shovels. The four-month period covered by the cost data appended at the end of the paper immediately followed a period of about one year during which the mine was shut down, and the expense incident to the resumption of operations is reflected in the costs. New mineral activity focused on increased petroleum exploration activities, while the established construction-oriented minerals sector operated without substantial change from previous years. After showing a 1 % real growth in the $154 million II gross domestic product (GDP) for 1983, preliminary estimates for 1984 indicated that the same growth pattern prevailed. The negative trade balance at midyear had worsened over the negative balance for the same period in 1983. An upward trend in import costs partly reflected the impact of Mexican inflation, which made that country's goods more ex-pensive and led to increased imports from North America and Europe. On the other hand, by midyear, the reexport trade with Mexico indicated an upward climb from the 1988 low of $12.7 million.

Gas samples containing 02, N2, H2, He, CO2, CO, CH4, and trace amounts of C 2 to C6 hydrocarbons are analyzed by a gas chromatographic method that utilizes both thermal conductivity and flame ionization detectors. A porous polymer support and molecular sieve columns are used with argon as the carrier gas. A column selector valve makes it possible to perform a complete analysis either on one 1-ml sample in 40 minutes or on two samples in 20 minutes, one sample for each detector. Samples are introduced either by on-column injection or through a gas sampling valve. By varying operational parameters, the speed, sensitivity, and accuracy of analysis may be modified to suit a particular situation.

A simplified method for the atomic absorption determination of antimony is described. Samples are dissolved in hydrobromic acid and diluted to volume with water. Solutions can be ready for analysis in about 10 minutes and are stable for at least 24 hours. The spectral line at 231 nanometers is used, and there is no effect on absorption resulting .from the presence of any concentration of HBr. Absorbance is linear with antimony concentrations up to 120 micrograms per milliliter. Sensitivity is 1.48 micrograms per milliliter per 0.0044 absorbance. Relative errors on National Bureau of Standards Standard Reference Materials were 3 percent or less, and relative standard deviations on 12 determinations of each of three flue dust samples were 4 percent or less (95-percent confidence limit).

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory beneficiation tests on four samples of waste. granite sludge to devise a method of recovering silicon carbide (SiC). Froth flotation using creosote as a collector in an alkaline circuit resulted in concentrates containing over 91 pct SiC from each of the samples. Recoveries ranged from 43.1 to 86.6 pct. Single-stage flotation of sample A using a column flotation cell produced a concentrate containing 92.0 pct SiC with a recovery of 71.4 pct. Flotation using petroleum sulfonate as a collector in an acid circuit resulted in a concentrate containing 95 pct SiC from one of the waste granite products with a recovery of 97.5 pct .?

Improve the dust control effectiveness of dry collection systems on surface coal mine drills. Approach Use a dust pelletizer to convert the respirable dust particles discharged by the dry collector into dust pellets that present no health hazard. Background Blasthole drills are well-known sources of respirable dust that can contain significant amounts of quartz. The drills frequently use a dry cyclone-filter type collector that can obtain dust reductions theoretically greater than 95 pct. However, surface mine drills using dry collectors typically have three major dust sources that significantly reduce the overall effectiveness of the collection system: (1) the dust collector dump cycle, (2) drill shroud leakage, and (3) leakage around the drill stem seal in the drill table.

Electrochemical machining sludge, a troublesome fluid waste product, was dewatered on a bench-scale basis by three alternative methods tested by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These methods would enable recycling 89 percent or more of the liquid content of the sludge and allow the dewatered solids to be dumped as landfill or processed further to recover contained nickel. Dewatering by vacuum precoat filtration was estimated to be the least expensive. Based on treating 20,000 gallons per day of sludge, precoat filtration costs were estimated as totaling 1.96 cents per gallon of sludge. Two options of an alternative method, comprised of acidification, reprecipitation, thickening, and filtration, were estimated to cost either 3.41 or 3.60 cents per gallon of sludge.

Pulverized high- volatile A bituminous coal was gasified with oxygen and superheated steam in a pressure - gasification pilot plant equipped for steampickup feeding . The pilot plant operated satisfactorily at relatively high steam- to - coal ratios , but steam- to - coal ratios could not be reduced much below 0.5 lb / lb without condensation of steam or softening of the coal . Carbon gasified , gas composition , and coal and oxygen requirements were essentially the same as for a pilot plant equipped with a fluidized coal feeder . Average results from the pilot plant equipped for steam- pickup feeding were coal requirement , 37.3 lb/M ( 1,000 ) scf of CO + H₂ produced ; oxygen requirement , 358 scf /M scf CO + H₂ produced ; and carbon gasified , 87.7 percent .

A polyester-type resin and deformed-steel reinforcing bars (rebars) were used in to strengthen and to stabilize bolted, fractured wall rock along pas 1:'y. in a western gold mine. Reinforcing bars were placed in boreholes drilled into fractured rock and then were surrounded by resin pumped under pressure into the holes and intersecting fractures until the wall rock was thoroughly impregnated. Pumping and injection equipment and infusion procedures are described. Visual examinations for movement in bonded and adjacent unbonded rock were made for 3 years. Fractured walls containing resin-rebar installations were strengthened. The results suggest that resin-rebar support can be used advantageously and economically in repairing fractured or broken rock when compared with rock bolting or timbering.

The program listing (B.6) can be used to prepare a card deck and the data cards can be punched from the directions given in Section B. 2. Typical input data and output printout summarized in B 5 provides guidelines for the program use. Sections B 3 (Program Nomenclature) and B 4 (Subroutine Description) describe, in detail, the inner workings of the program and are particularly useful for a user interested in modifying the program.

"Churn drills for blast-hole drilling are important to the operation of most open-pit metal mines, but certain hazards are created through their use that cause fatal and nonfatal accidents.2/ The purpose of this circular is to present a code of safe practice prepared and followed at a large Arizona open-pit copper mine, where safety is recognized as a definite operating problem. Such a code, based upon a thorough study of available published information as well as practical experience gained from accidents and near accidents, is the result of considerable effort and monetary expenditure. It is hoped that other operations using churn drills may benefit by the code presented, either in comparison with existing rules or in the preparation of new operating instructions.The code presented is in use at the Morenci Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corn., Morenci, Ariz. Similar codes are used at the New Cornelia Branch, Ajo, Ariz., and in the waste-pit operation at the United Verde Branch, Jerome, Ariz.The authors gratefully acknowledge the cooperation of the Phelps Dodge Corp., whose personnel made: possible the collection of information included in this circular. Larsen, general drilling and blasting foreman, Morenci Branch, Morenci, Ariz.The importance of churn drills in Arizona mining is apparent when it is realized that at all the open-pit copper mines blast holes are drilled with this equipment. At Morenci, approximately 98 percent of the ground is broken by primary blasting of churn-drill holes.There has been a growing tendency in Arizona's copper-mining industry to change from underground to open-pit mining, with consequent increase in the use of churn-drill blast holes for primary blasting.3/Thirty-three churn drills are in use at Morenci for blast-hole drilling. The drills operate with 440-volt alternating current, and trailing drill cables, in 500-foot sections, connect with the portable drill transformer station.4/ Three Diesel-driven churn drills for drilling prospect holes also are in use. About 25 churn-drill shifts are operated currently on a three-shift basis. Ordinarily, a two-man crew is assigned to each drill; however, with prospect-drill crews a third man is added to handle the sampling.Benches are carried at a uniform height of 50 feet. Churn-drill holes are 9 or 12 inches in diameter and about 60 feet deep. The holes are 18 feet apart in hard waste and 21 feet in soft waste and ore, with toes from 11 to 13 yards at the shovel grade. Both the hole spacing and the toe have been increased gradually, until they are now 2 yards longer than in 1940. The average ground broken per hole is 3,500 tons, or 60 tons of ore per foot of hole drilled. The holes are drilled 10 feet below the bench to avoid leaving hard bottom, which requires secondary drilling and blasting.Starting with a 12-inch casing, the prospect holes average 1,200 to 1,500 feet in depth and terminate with 6-inch casing; the deepest hole drilled to date went to 1,735 feet.In addition, churn-drills are used at Morenci to drill blast holes in the silica pit, limestone quarry, and the tailings dam. Other irregular applications are the drilling of holes to set trolley roles and for concrete piling in building foundations."

PRODUCTION of carbon black decreased 4 percent in 1961. Output in the major producing States of Texas and Louisiana decreased 1 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Production of channel black continued downward, declining 10 percent in 1961 compared with 9 percent in 1960. Furnace black production also decreased 3 percent from 1960. Total domestic sales, however, increased 2 percent, Sales to most major consumers increased, but sales to the ink industry decreased 10 percent. Producer's stocks decreased 5,083,000 pounds during the year. Exports decreased 4 percent. SCOPE OF REPORT Carbon black is a very pure grade of quasi-graphitic carbon; particle diameters range from 50 to 5,000 angstrom units. Annual reports were submitted to the Bureau of Mines by operators of all commercial plants in the United States.
