Sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite are aluminum silicates having the same chemical composition (Al2SiO5) and are used in the ceramics industry for the manufacture of high-grade refractories. Natural sillimanite with added corundum or other alumina to just short of mullite (3Al2O3 -2SiO2) proportions is unequalled for jobs wherein strength at high temperatures, resistance to spalling, and resistance to slagging by acid slags are desired. High-grade porcelain ware also requires these minerals. At the same cost, sillimanite would be preferred for most uses, but the lack of any large source of sillimanite bas given economic preference to kyanite or andalusite for special refractories and high-grade porcelain wares. Sillimanite-bearing schists were observed in Spartanburg County, S. C.; as early as 1937 by D. Hoye Eargle, geologist with the U. S. Soil Conservation Service. The mineral was not identified until 1942, when Miss Jewell Glass, of the U. S. Geological Survey, examined several of the deposits. This identification was confirmed in 1943 by Dr. Laurence L. Smith, of the University of South Carolina, when he examined the Spartanburg County deposits and found numerous additional occurrences of sillimanite schist in Greenville County. Subsequent work by the Bureau of Mines and the South Carolina Geological Survey has been responsible for the location of additional sillimanite-rich schist deposits in Spartanburg County. Between October 1, 1948, and November 21, 1948, the Bureau of Mines conducted an exploratory diamond-drilling project on the John Gideon property in the southeastern section of Spartanburg County (fig. 1) and drilled a total of 681.7 feet in six holes. Drilling indicated that the deposit is relatively shallow, as no ore was cut below the zone of weathering.

"The tungsten area in southern Mecklenburg County, Virginia, was studied by the Bureau of Mines during the period August 1944 to March 1945. The explorations were an expansion of the work done by the Bureau in 1943 in the tungsten area of Vance County, North Carolina, which joins Mecklenburg County on the south.3/Outcrops of quartz veins in the area were searched for and examined, and the only Promising showing found (a vein on the Gladys N. Taylor tract) was explored by trenching, test pitting, and diamond drilling (fig. 1).Mecklenburg County, Virginia, is in the southeastern part of the State, bordering on North Carolina,U. S. Highways 1, 15, and 58 traverse the County, and State and County roads provide ready access to most parts of the area.In 1942, Joseph and Richard Hamme discovered tungsten-bearing quartz veins in Vance County, Forth Carolina, and started mining and milling the ore. The first concentrates were shipped in July 1943. In August 1943, the Hamme holdings were acquired by Haile Mines, Inc., who continued the mining operations.The Bureau of Mines began exploratory work in North Carolina in June 1943. Reconnaissance work showed that the mineralized belt extends north-ward into Virginia. The Kimball tract, which joins the Taylor property on the north, was explored in 1943 by trenching and drilling by the R. G. Lassiter interests of Raleigh, Y. C., with disappointing results.The topography of the district is mature and characterized by wide, shallow valleys and low, rounded ridges. The main ridges trend northeast. Most of the area ranges from 300 feet to 400 feet above sea level.The relief apparently is controlled by resistant quartz lenses and the associated hard, silicified zones. The enclosing schists and granites are usually deeply weathered. Consequently, most of the quartz veins are found on the ridges."

Coke Since the beginning of manufacturing of metallurgical coke in the United States, which dates from about 1859, Pennsylvania has main tamed supremacy in coke production Available statistics for the year 1880 show an output of 3,338,300 short tons, which was neatly trebled by the end of the succeeding 10 years. From this time on the increase was steady, though not rapid, and in 1922 the total production was 13,991,892 tons, which is approximately 37 per cent of the total coke production of the United States. The main reason for the rapid development of the coke industry in Pennsylvania lies in the abundance of coals particularly adapted to beehive coking, for which purpose the Pittsburgh bed in the Connellsville district has long been looked upon as standard At first practically all metallurgical coke was made in beehive ovens, the only exception being the short lived and wasteful method of coking in piles, byproduct owns did not make then appearance until after 1893 The suitability of a beehive coking coal cannot be accurately predicted from its chemical analysis, but it can be said, perhaps, that the volatile matter should be about 32 per cent, and that the oxygen content should not be mole than 10 pet cent or less than 4 per cent The sulphur and phosphorus content should be small-not over 1 25 per cent sulphur and under 0 02 pen cent phosphorus-and the ash content should not be over 7 per cent The Pittsburgh bed at Connellsvnlle fills these requirements well, as may be seen from the following representative analysis. Supernatant media of dust-exposed pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAMs) were inactive in assays for both Interleukin-1 and fibroblast growth factors (FGF). We have begun to evaluate several factors that may interfere with dust-PAM interactions. To determine the effect of sterilization on the activity of dusts, PAMs were exposed to autoclaved dust, heat-sterilized dust or to dust that had not been heated. Supernatants from the first two groups were inactive in the FGF assay, but supernatant from PAMs exposed to unheated dusts stimulated growth of lung fibroblasts. Recent data have revealed that freshly crushed mineral dusts possess labile free radicals that are absent in dust that has been stored for more than a few days. Suspensions .were prepared of a "stale" sample of anthracite dust 867 and of a freshly ground sample of the same dust. These suspensions were instilled intratracheally into guinea pigs under general anesthesia. Two, five or eight days later, PAMs were collected from the lungs by bronchoalveolar lavage, and the cells were counted. At two and five days after instillation, all lavage suspensions contained 70 to 85% PAMs, of which 5 to 18% contained phagocytized dust particles. On day eight there were again 80-84% PAMs in all suspensions, but in the presence of "fresh'" dust, 48% of PAMs. had phagocytized particles in comparison to 16% in the presence of '"stale'" dust. A similar experiment was performed in short-term cell culture. During 24 hours, >95%. of PAMs phagocytized dust particles, whether or not the dust was "stale" or '"fresh". Our studies are being extended to determine the effect of (1) removing surface oil contaminants by organic extraction and (2) suspending dusts without surfactant.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have long used stationary tapered element oscillating microbalances (TEOMs®) in laboratory settings. They have served to assess the mass concentration of laboratory-generated particulates in experimental , dust chambers and they provide a reference method for comparison with other particulate- measuring instruments. Current NIOSH research is focused on further adapting TEOM technology as a wearable personal dust monitor (PDM) for coal mining occupations. This investigation's goal is to help identify, quantify, and provide means for resolving certain TEOM- related error. The present research investigated bias caused by thermal effects on filter assemblies. New filters used in the PDM for 8 h tests show an average positive bias of 25.5 pg, while similar tests of equivalent filters used in two 1400A model TEOMs show an average positive bias of 34.3 µg. The derived bias values allow correction of previously collected biased data. Also, pre- heating the filters for 24 h at 46° C shows significant bias reduction, with PDM pre-heated filters subsequently averaging -3.3 µg and 1400A TEOM filters averaging 5.9 µg. On a single-point comparison to gravimetric sampling, a 25.5 µg bias is only significant at low mass loadings. At 2.5 mg, this bias represents a negligible 1 % of the mass measurement. If ordinary linear regression is used, the bias is still insignificant. However, if the more valid weighted linear regression is used, it gives more weight to the smaller dependent variable values, which are more impacted by the bias. Consequently, what is 1% bias on a single high-mass value can translate into a larger bias percentage at high-mass values when performing a weighted regression on data that include a large number of low-mass values.

Only limited work has been reported in the literature about the use of latex in soil. Unisol 91 2,3 (a 9:l oil-latex emulsion made b International Synthetic Rubber Company) and Phil1ips Petroset4 geotechnic emulsions are surface soil stabilizers which penetrate a maximum of two inches, but do not reduce permeability. Diamond Alkali 5 found that styrene-butadiene rubber latex as a one percent latex-soil mixture reduced permeability to 0.7 from 21 feet per year under a head of twenty feet of brine. We have found no literature reference for use of latex as sealant at depth in the soil, although asphalt has been applied at depth using civil engineering methods6,7. Most of the materials investigated as soil sealants in the present work were latexes, although some studies were also conducted with a variety of inorganic and organic chemicals. Of the latexes tested, most were rubber but a few were plastic, e.g. polyvinyl chloride. Sealants examined in this investigation are listed individually in Table I with supplier, code number, and other pertinent information. The materials consisted of the following general classes with additional details as indicated: 1.Anionic latexes: a. styrene-butadiene copolymers and terpolymers (SBR) b. butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer (Paracrils®) c. polyvinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers (WC) d. ethylene-propylene terpolymer e. vinyl acetate homopolymers and copolymers (VA) f. acrylics (acrylate copolymers) g. 2-chlorobutadiene homopolymer (chloroprene) (prepared specially as cationic material coagulated by soil). 2. Water Soluble polymers: a. polyvinyl ether b. methylcellulose c. polyethyleneimines d. polyacrylic acid homopolymer e. copolymers and terpolymers with acrylic acid types (water soluble as sodium or ammonium salts) f. alginates g. monomers (for polymerization in soil, e.g. acrylamide)

Problem: It is estimated that 5 to 10 arc flash explosions occur in electric equipment every day in the United States. In the mining industry the largest single injury category of electrical injuries are caused by non-contact electrical arcs. Method: This investigation progressed in two phases: (a) 836 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reports of electric arcing incidents that occurred over a period of 11 years were reviewed, and (b) personal interviews were conducted with 32 individuals. A theoretical Safe Job Performance Model guided the study. Results: Behavioral dimensions were identified and included the effect of worker experience, judgment and decision-making ability, behavioral and organizational controls, and safety culture. Summary: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted an investigation of behavioral components associated with arc flash incidents and developed recommendations for interventions based on findings. Impact on Industry: This study fills a vacuum in electrical training with a focus on the organizational and behavioral aspects of arc flash incidents. There search is cross-cutting in its scope, in that the results apply not only to mining and construction, but many other industries employing electricians. Although the majority of mine electrical injuries are the results of burns from electrical arcs, few miners are aware that such a hazard exists. A safety training program, which includes a video and an instructor's discussion guide, was developed for electricians based on this study's findings. “Arc Flash Awareness” was released in 2007 (DHHS NIOSH PublicationNo.2007-116D) and is available through1-800 CDC-INFO. The Federal Bureau of Mines is publishing a series of studies on the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. This report describes the longwall-mining methods and techniques used at the Radon mine, Big Indian district, San Juan County, Utah. The tabular Radon ore body lies on the southwest flank of the Lisbon Valley anticline, strikes N. 10° W., dips 7° SW., and has an average thickness of 4-1/2 to 5 ft. The mine is developed by a three-compartment vertical shaft, a haulage level driven beneath the ore, and a system of drifts driven within and parallel to the strike of the ore.

The Geophysical section of the United States Bureau of Mines has received many inquiries regarding the application of geophysical methods to the location of small, buried metallic objects. The object of this paper is fourfold: (1) To sketch as briefly and non- technically as possible the principles underlying the operation of several elec- trical geophysical methods of prospecting applicable to the finding of small, buried metallic objects; (2) to point out the possibilities and limitations of these methods; (3) to present, whenever possible, data showing actual results obtained from their use; and (4) to enumerate and describe methods that lack scientific background or foundation.

Under contract with the Federal Bureau of Mines, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., performed a statistical study to find less expensive and time-consuming methods of monitoring the noncombustible content of coal mine dust. Calculations based on thermodynamic considerations verified the reasonableness of Federal rock-dusting requirements. The results of extensive sampling in southwestern Pennsylvania mines indicated that, at the 95-percent confidence level, the present system of sampling at 200-foot intervals may be replaced by sampling at 500-foot intervals, and that a 1-inch scoop floor sampler may replace the standard 6-inch scoop for floor sampling. Further field testing is recommended.

Data from 68 entrained-bed carbonization tests were treated statistically by the Bureau of Mines, and several useful relationships were developed among the major variables. Nine coals, ranging in rank from lignite A to high-volatile A bituminous, were carbonized in two entrained-bed carbonization pilot plants. The carbonizing reactors employed were vertically mounted cylinders, internally heated, refractory-lined, and 10 inches ID. The range of carbonization temperatures was from 825° to 1,600° F. Using a regression-analysis computer program, empirical equations were developed by which carbonization temperature, air-to-coal ratio, devolatilization of coal, char yield, and volatile matter content of product char may be predicted.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory investigation to study the effectiveness of low-pressure steam and water spray in suppressing respirable dust at the tips of a saw-type cutting wheel. Suppression efficiencies were found to be proportional to the amount of the water or steam applied at the cutter tips. For equivalent water output rates, a maximum efficiency of approximately 80 percent was reached for both steam and water spray. Results from the steam and water spray tests showed an increase in suppression efficiency with an increase in particle size of 1 to 8 micrometers. The data indicate no advantages for using steam as a dust suppressant.

UPTREND in value of mineral production in the Commonwealth of Australia continued in 1963, again pacing the country's general economic growth rate. Increases occurred in output of most raw and processed mineral products, including bauxite, copper, iron ore, pig iron, steel, lead, zinc, cement, gypsum, pyrite, coal, and refined petroleum products. Although the economy of Australia has been traditionally based on wool and agricultural products, in recent years the country has become highly industrialized. Nearly one-third of the 3.6 million total civilian labor force is engaged in manufacturing. Employment in mines and quarries occupies 1.4 percent of the national labor force.

Data are presented to show oil vaporization resulting from the passage of natural gas through a sand-packed tube saturated with synthetic reservoir oils. The Bureau of Mines performed 13 experiments, using reservoir oils synthesized with base crude oils of approximately 22°, 35°, and 45° API, at 100°, 175°, or 250° F and 1,100, 2,600, or 4,100 psia. It has been determined that the amount of vaporization is significant if proper conditions exist. These experiments show that oil vaporization depends on pressure, temperature, volatility of the oil, and amount of gas cycled. Increases in each of these conditions increase the volume of oil vaporized.

This investigation by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated that building bricks can be produced by the steam-curing process from various types of industrial mineral wastes. Wastes, utilized to produce bricks, consisted of copper mill tailings, roofing granule fines, asbestos fines, and zinc mill tailings. Bonding of the wastes with either Ca(OH)2 or portland cement resulted in building bricks that met ASTM specification C73-67 for grade SW and MW bricks when evaluated in accordance with ASTM designation C67-66 on sampling and testing of brick. An economic evaluation of the process indicates the total operating cost per 1,000 bricks is about $36.

Heats of solution of calcium carbon-ate (calcite) and calcium oxide in hydrochloric acid were determined by solution calorimetry. Combination of these two heats yields a value of 42.643±0.024 kcal/mole for the enthalpy of calcination of calcite at 298.15 K. Literature data on ?H°298.15 of calcination of calcite were reviewed and compared. Thermodynamic properties for the calcination process were calculated from 298.15 to 1,500 K using Gibbs energy functions. This research was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as an effort to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of minerals technology, energy conservation, and environmental preservation.

A series of alloys was laboratory prepared by adding up to 4 weight-percent cobalt to the basic composition of type AM 350 (AISI 633) stainless steel. Aging curves were established for each alloy at 750° F, 850° F, and 950° F for lengths of time up to 100 hours. A series of annealed steels containing as much as 1 weight-percent cobalt was cold-rolled 50 percent and aged for 3 hours at 850° F. No improvement in hardness due to cobalt was observed in the steels transformed by heat treatment. Slight improvements in hardness were observed in the steels transformed by cold working.

1. Mining to prevent and control underground acid formation should begin with education imparted through: (A) Course work at mining schools to teach prospective engineers. (B) Training of engineers presently employed in the mining industry through appropriate mining extension courses. 2. Considerable need exists to devote more attention to: (A) Hydrogeologic studies of mining areas to enhance the planning of new mines and the abatement program of existing mines. (B) Additional research to explore methods of dewatering the strata associated with mining areas. (C) Further effort to develop sealants for preventing contact between water or oxygen and the acid producing material associated with the coal seam.
