The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of dilute polymer in brine solutions to increase the efficiency of air in gas flooding model oil reservoirs. Slugs (0.23 pore volume) of 500 ppm polyacrylamide were injected into a model, consisting of a high- and a low-permeability core, that had been previously gas flooded to residual oil. Gas flooding was then resumed. Of the total gas volume injected, the percentage entering the high-permeability zone was greatly reduced after polymer injection but remained unchanged when slugs of water without polymer were used.

Tungsten metal in fused form and of high purity was prepared by reducing tungstic oxide with redistilled calcium metal in a heavy-walled sealed reactor. Alloys of tungsten with vanadium, molybdenum) chromium, columbium, and tantalum were prepared by coreduction of mixed metal oxides in the same manner. This work was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to investigate new approaches for preparing tungsten and its alloys in high-purity form. The standard method of producing tungsten metal has been the reduction of tungstic oxides by hydrogen. The resulting metal powder is compacted, sintered, and fabricated by powder metallurgy methods. Long experience in this field has resulted in the development of a technology that (by careful control of the variables such as metal composition, particle size, and sinterng technique) is well adapted to producing wire and the small shapes usually prepared from tungsten metal.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed and tested a teleoperating system to control a new highwall mining system. A remote operator was provided out-of-sight sensory information and control of coal extraction and haulage equipment. Surface and production testing proved that the teleoperating system supplied the operator with sufficient sensory information to operate the mining system. Details on the teleoperating system provided in this report include (1) sensor selection, (2) a description of the electronic control system, (3) equipment selection and modifications, (4) the positive test results, and (5) recommendations for system improvements.

An apparatus has been developed for determining the helium content of gases containing 40 percent or more helium . It utilizes activated coconut charcoal at liquid nitrogen temperatures to adsorb constituents other than helium in the mixture . Series of analyses have been run where the mean deviation was less than 0.05 percent helium . Twenty or more analyses can be made in an 8- hour day .

Misuse of explosives and heedless disregard of well-known safety rules covering the use of commercial explosives cause many avoidable accidents resulting in the death or maiming of men who can ill be spared by already undermanned industry at present, and who cannot be spared by their families at any tire. Blasting accidents, when not fatal, are usually serious; the past and present needless loss of life and maiming of men from this cause are appalling and types of waste that can and should be virtually eliminated. Dead, crippled, and maimed men are distinct losses to society as well as to industry, and compensation payments for such accidents represent only a portion of the financial loss, because the value of their lost potential production can only be surmised. By their very nature, explosives are dangerous to handle, otherwise they would not perform the services for which they are used; all men on a blasting crew are subjected to the results of the carelessness of any one member, and in many instances the misuse of explosives by one person has killed scores of fellow workers. Inexperienced men should be assigned to blasting operations only under the close supervision of men well-experienced in the work and familiar with its inherent hazards. Men should be selected for blasting crews that are known to be careful, willing to follow instructions, cool-headed, and unlikely to become excited in an emergency; they should be instructed in the safe handling of explosives in accordance with the safety rules established by the explosives -manufacturing companies or the safety codes of the various industrial organizations. Unfortunately, American industry has never adopted a uniform code for the safe handling of explosives; however, many mining companies have made rules that will eliminate most unsafe practices if established safe procedure is followed carefully. The Bureau of Mines has issued numerous pamphlets giving information on the causes of accidents due to explosives in the mining industry and indicating the ways in which a good proportion of those accidents can be avoided.

The purpose of this circular is to show that, under the conditions prevailing in the Stony Point mine, wooden bolts were just as satisfactory as steel bolts or conventional timbering, with a reduction of approximately 80 percent in cost of material. This one fact alone is enough to justify an experiment with wood. This circular will show that production records have remained constant with both wooden and steel roof bolts. INTRODUCTION The successful use of steel roof bolts is now an accomplished fact in the coal industry, but the use of wooden bolts in place of steel is a rarity. The first experiment with wooden roof bolts was mane in 1949 in the Rio Verde mine, Norton Coal Corp., Nortonville, Ky.2/ This experiment was successful; the company obtained excellent results, but operations in the mine were suspended before enough time had elapsed to prove the value of wooden roof bolts conclusively. It is obvious that, if wooden roof bolts could be used in place of steel bolts or conventional timbering-methods, every mine operator would use word, as the cost is only a fraction of the other two methods. The Stony Point experience has proved conclusively that, under certain conditions and with a certain type of roof, wooden roof bolts can be used successfully.

The present article is one of a series which is being prepared by the Southwest Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Department of Mining and Metallurgy, University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz., of papers dealing with factors involved in the leaching of copper ores. A knowledge of the time required to dissolve the various copper minerals present in ores, as well as of the consumption of leaching reagents is very desirable, because with the decrease of the Nation's total tonnage of sulphide ores increasing attention is being given to the recovery of copper by leaching methods from low-grade disseminated ore containing both oxidized and sulphide minerals. As leaching has already been applied with success and profit, this study was undertaken to determine certain fundamental characteristics that are applicable to all ores suitable for leaching.

The Bureau of Mines has under development on a technical scale an electrolytic process for treating oxidized ores of zinc , using caustic soda as an electrolyte . Whereas the Bureau process can alternately make either solid zinc or zinc dust , the following paper , from the Ludwigshafen research laboratory of the well -known I. G. Farbenindustrie , A. G. , of Germany, deals only with production of zinc dust from sodium zincate solutions and may well serve as introduction to the subject for American metallurgists . The Bureau of Mines pioneered in the idea ; a study on laboratory scale by H. J. Morgan and 0. C. Ralston was made early in the First World War, and published in Transactions of the American Electrochemical Society . The Eckardt paper , translation of which follows , goes more thoroughly into the preparation of electrolytic zinc dust , and later publications of the Bureau of Mines will deal with broader details and application of the idea to treatment of lowgrade ores and metallurgical intermediates , which is the point where Eckardt left off . 4 The Eckardt report became available through operations of Field Information Agency , Technical ( FIAT ) of the Office of Military Government for Germany (US ) , which made bibliofilm copies of the files of internal technical reports of many of the German industrial establishments , Eckardt's report is dated April 1939 and was taken on FIAT Microfilm Reel MM 106 , frames 82-101 , which is on file as Publication Board Document 41411 in Office of Technical Services of the U. S. Department of Commerce , Washington , D, C , Eckardt points out that the normal source of zinc dust is the blue powder of the zinc retorts , which decreases in volume every year owing to technologic improvements in zinc smelting. The oft-repeated expression that the taproot of safety lies in the attitude of the management toward accident-prevention work is indisputable and has become almost an axiom. Trite and somewhat timeworn though the statement may be, it is nevertheless true that the supervisory force must earnestly support a policy of safety and maintain at all times a con¬ siderate regard for the welfare of the employee if that high degree of cooperation of the employee, so vital to the successful prosecution of any safety program, is to be expected. The responsibility for preventing accidents rests upon the management, and in the case of the Spring Canyon Coal Co. such responsibility is recognized and accepted with little or no reservation. This company, aside from the humanitarian aspects involved, believes that safety is good business and not a matter to be treated passively or in a perfunctory manner. The problems with respect to safety that have been met and wholly or partly solved can best be appreciated when some of the natural conditions, adverse and otherwise, existing at this operation are taken into consideration. Mine 1 is about 1 mile north of the town of Spring Canyon, Carbon County, Utah, and is served by both the Denver & Rio Grande Western and Utah Coal Route railways. During the year 1931 the mine produced 312,397 tons, approximately 10 per cent being derived from pillar workings. The normal daily output during the summer months is about 2,000 tons, and during the peak of production in the winter season the daily production varies from 2,500 to 3,000 tons. The number of miners varies from 87 in summer to 220 in winter, and the day men vary in number from 66 in the winter to 45 in the summer; 12 company men are employed the year around. The officers of the company are J. B. Smith, president, San Francisco, California; T. R. Stockett, general manager, Salt Lake City; and G. A. Murphy, superintendent, David Brown, assistant superintendent, and John Sullivan, mine foreman, all of Spring Canyon, Utah.

A German coal planer was put in operation in the Keystone mine of the Eastern Associated Coal Corp. , Keystone , W. Va . , in August 1960 . At present , the planer is mining in the fourth panel . The blocks of coal mined were 340 by 1,900 feet in panel 1 , 340 by 1,660 feet in panel 2 , 590 by 1,900 feet in panel 3 , and panel 4 , currently being mined , is 590 by 1,900 feet . Almost one- half million tons of coal have been mined from these four panels . An 11 - man crew handles the complete planer operation and produces an average of 500 tons of clean coal per shift . Self - advancing hydraulic props are used to support the roof over the entire face . Roof control and action on all of the panels has been highly satisfactory . During periods of extreme pressure , some additional support is required in the tail entry where evidence of weight from the retreating longwall extends about 200 feet outby the face . The time lost from production by moving equipment between panels has been reduced steadily . The move from panel 3 to panel 4 required 5 days , but it is believed that even that time could be reduced .

This information circular is a revision of I.C. 7238, Danger from Carbon Monoxide in the Home, by L. B. Berger and H. H. Schrenk, issued in April 1943. Each winter brings its toll of deaths and serious accidents from the deadly gas, carbon monoxide. Newspapers carry warnings to the public of the, dangers of this gas, and frequent news items report the finding of persons dead at unconscious from the effects of carbon monoxide, yet these accidents continue. Either these warnings are not read, or they are unheeded by people who feel that, "It can't happen to me." It can happen to you carbon monoxide is no respecter of persons.

An ethanolamine purification unit for removing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from Firscher-Tropsch synthesis gas was installed at the Bureau of Mines synthetic liquid fuels demonstration plant at Louisiana, Mo. The unit was a surplus Radford Girbotol unit from the Missouri Ordnance Works modified for a capacity of 90,000 std. cu. ft per hour of synthesis gas at 450 p.s.i.g., operating pressure. The hydrogen sulfide loading of the feed gas was specified at 500 grains per 100 cu. Ft. The unit was designed by the Girdler Corp. and installed by the Koppers Co. Initial operations were conducted far 11 days in May 1951. Thereafter 7 additional runs were made, varying lo duration from 8 to 54 days. The last run was terminated on May 29, 1953, the total time the Plant wars in operation being 219 days.

As one of its projects for degasification of major panels of coal prior to mining within them, the Bureau of Mines conducted methane emission studies during development of a set of three headings 1,800 feet in a major coal panel (2,700 by 3,500 feet) which had been completely isolated by sets of main headings for 12 months in the Federal No. 2 mine (Pittsburgh coalbed) in northern West Virginia. Similar emission studies were conducted in the development of two sets of main headings in virgin coal areas nearby. Comparing the two sets of data indicated that the isolated coal panel had been degasified by approximately 70 percent.

This is one of a. series of papers being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines, describing raining and milling methods at crushed-stone plants throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in man; instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. However, operating costs are essential to technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that the scope of the cost tabulations shall not be misunderstood. This paper deals with the quarrying and crushing methods used at the Avon Mountain trap-rock quarry of the Atlas Sand, Gravel & Stone Co., in West Hartford, Conn.

A system for measuring amplitude probability distributions (APD’s) of electromagnetic noise in coal mines is described and typical APD’s from an underground coal mine are presented. The APD is a basic statistic required for the design and analysis of communication systems, especially those intended for use in noisy environments, and where neither overdesign nor underdesign is acceptable. The rms and average field strengths are obtained by integration of the APD, and examples are shown at several frequencies. All field strength levels are given in absolute units. Selected frequencies cover the range from 10 kHz to 32 MHz.

Shortage of natural gas is reviving interest in low-Btu fuel gas made by gasifying coal in fixed-bed producers. The Bureau of Mines gasified strongly caking Pittsburgh bed coal over test periods lasting four days in an experimental gas producer located at Morgantown, W. Va, Mechanical stirring throughout the fuel bed was effective for keeping the fuel moving and this stirring made the operation successful; hence, the gas producer was named the stirred-bed producer. Nuclear density gages were applied as control instruments to indicate coal flow and fuel level, and to record the frequency and location of void spaces in the bed, The gas, of nominal 140 to 165 Btu/scf calorific value, could be burned in a boiler for generating steam.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the results of laboratory work in the design of instrumentation for obtaining the dynamic tensile strength of rock at minimum loading. Minimum loading is defined as the lowest tensile loading by pulse reflection to cause fracturing. The instrumentation for obtaining dynamic tensile strengths of rock cores evolved into the use of a compressed-air pellet gun to impact one end of a rock core, suspended by wires, at increasing increments of air pressure. Maximum strain was measured on most or all of the impacts, and the strain at fracture of the core was obtained by extrapolating the pellet velocity-strain curve to the pellet velocity at fracture. Stress at tensile fracture was obtained from the maximum s train, and the dynamic Young's modulus was calculated from the rod velocity by using simple rod theory.

A pendulum sclerometer designed by the Bureau of Mines is described. Its method of operation is given, along with the results of tests made on representative mineral samples of Mohs' hardness scale to determine the applicability of the device for research on rock testing. The sclerometer hardness values obtained from the tests indicated that reproducibility and accuracy were good. A quantitative comparison of the pendulum hardness values with microhardness and surface energy values published by other investigators showed good agreement on minerals with Mohs' hardness numbers of 2 to 9.

A fluorometric method using morin in an alkaline-buffered chelating solution has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for determining beryllium in ores and mill products. Apparatus for measuring fluorescence intensities of the beryllium-morin reaction is described. Preparation of the sample for analysis consists essentially of digestion with sulfuric, nitric, and hydrofluoric acids, fusion of the residue with sodium carbonate and sodium borate, Solution of the melt with sulfuric acid, and proper dilution. Chemical separation of other ions is usually unnecessary. The method rave reliable beryllium determinations on samples in the 0.01- to 0.37-percent BeO range. The method is particularly applicable to low-grade beryllium ores; however, semiquantitative beryllium determinations have been made on beryl containing 12.0 percent BeO.
