The topography of the Jamestown fluorspar area is rough and ranges from 6,400 to 8,000 feet in altitude. Some fluorspar was mined as early as 1870, but mining really did not begin in earnest until 1940, and up to July 1947 it is estimated that 272,500 tons of fluorite was mined and milled. In 1947 the General Chemical Co. was mining fluorite and milling it in a 200-ton-a-day mill at Valmont, 7 miles east of Boulder, and the Ozark-Mahoning Co. was milling ore in a 100-ton-a-day mill at Jamestown, using ore mined, by H. M. Williamson & Son. These fluorite deposits comprise veins in a granite country rock. The Bureau of Mines drilled eight holes, aggregating 2,579.1 feet, on the Blue Jay vein; four holes, aggregating 1,434 feet, on the Chancellor; and one 350-foot hole on the Nations Treasure. Fluorite of a minable grade and width was found in 10 of the holes drilled. In this report the location and accessibility, physical, features and climate are described and a brief history of the district is given. The deposits and character of the ore and sampling and analyses are described, mine workings are outlined, and work performed by the Bureau of Mines is summarized. Diamond drill logs are shown in appendix I, and 'Sample analyses are tabulated in appendix II.

The modern practice of grinding ores so that often 80 per cent or more of the product is finer than 200 mesh makes it desirable to supplement sieve sizing so as to extend considerably the range of sizing. Moreover, the fact that the material finer than sieve size represents the major part of the work done in grinding emphasizes thick need in can investigation of crushing efficiency. A method based on the settling rate of particles in grater appeared to be most practical for sizing; finely ground ores. There are two possible methods of utilizing this principle: one based on free settling or sedimentation; and the other on separation by means of a rising; current of water, or elutriation. In sedimentation, mechanical entanglement causes material at the start to settle in a mass, and this persists throughout. As this feature is largely eliminated by elutriation, which permits a comparatively clean separation of the various sizes, the elutriation method was adopted.

Samples of materials containing pyrite from various coal mines and coalbeds were studied to compare their compositions and oxidizing characteristics. Pyrite was the only form of iron sulfide identified, but X-ray diffraction, emission spectrography, and microscopic analyses revealed similar suites of minerals and trace elements. The pyrite occurred usually in spherical clusters of very small crystals. The oxidation of pyrite in solutions of PeSO4 and Fe2(SO4)3 and in the presence of an iron oxidizing bacterium Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, was studied through a manometric technique. FeS04 or Fe2(SO4)3 solutions had no appreciable influence on pyrite oxidation under the test conditions, The bacterium acted as a catalyst, greatly increasing the oxidation rates; however, in three samples that also contained calcites, bacterial oxidation was greatly reduced. The oxidation rates also increased approximately as the percentage of pyrite in the samples increased. For the series of samples studied, there was no definite correlation of the results with the location of the various mines nor with the acidity of alkalinity of the mine drainage.

Research by the Bureau of Mines has shown that treatment of open pit waste by crushing and sizing followed by flotation of the fines and leaching the coarse fraction results in greater metal recoveries than obtained by leaching only. Tests with a chalcocite-bearing quartz monzonite mine waste sample that had been crushed to minus 6 inches and screened on 1/2 inch yielded copper and silver recoveries of 71 and 22 percent, respectively, by the combined flotation-leaching process, compared with 48 percent of the copper and no silver recovered leaching the run-of-mine material. Copper was more readily leached from the coarse material with the minus 1/2-inch fines removed than from material with the fines included. The improved leaching was attributed to improved permeability and the associated improved circulation of air to the interior of the ore column. Cost estimates showed that the proposed intensive treatment of mine waste will require a greater capital investment and higher annual operating costs than conventional milling and dump leaching process. However, the income from the additional metal production offsets the increase in capital investment and operating costs, resulting in additional profit.

The Bureau of Mines monitored surface subsidence and water level fluctuations in 10 shallow observation wells above a series of four adjacent longwall panels in southwestern Pennsylvania, for about 4 yr. This study attempted to correlate the changes in the water levels within the observation wells to the measured vertical and horizontal ground movements associated with subsidence. Results of this study indicate that the fluctuation of the water levels appears to be a function of the well location relative to the mine layout and the proximity of mining. Wells are generally unaffected by mining of a preceding panel unless they are located within the angle of draw for that panel. Wells located at the centerline of a longwall panel exhibit the greatest fluctuation and head loss. This relationship may be related to the strain developed by the advancing longwall face. The water levels in the wells monitored fell at the greatest rate when the ground surrounding the well was in tension. The rate of the decline decreased as the dynamic development of the strains was changing from tension to compression. The water levels were found to be near the premining level before the ground was subject to maximum compressive strain. Nine of the ten wells investigated recovered to their premining water level after mining was completed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines explored new methods and technology for extracting coal from the Appalachian Mountain region of the Eastern United States. These methods were aimed at extracting coal from thin seams and focused on the use of "roof-fall-tolerant" (RFT) mining concepts. These methods could be used on existing, abandoned highwalls or in conjunction with new highwall mining. The research was conducted using small-scale and quasi-full-scale physical models to obtain experimental results. Details are provided on (1) the quasi-full-scale model for cross-ridge mining, (2) the quasi-full-scale model for down-ridge mining, (3) the test results of these models, and (4) recommendations for future research. Significant results include demonstration of the RFT concept, a discussion of expected coal produced from these methods, and recommendations for future research.

Capture airborne coal dust generated by a continuous mining machine to reduce workers? dust exposure and to improve face visibility. Approach Develop a low-profile dust collector system which can be mounted on the boom of a continuous miner. How It Works When coal is mined with a milling head continuous miner, a substantial amount of coal dust (respirable and non-respirable) escapes the dust suppression sprays at the cutter head. This can cause poor visibility around the cutting head and can expose the workers to high levels of respirable dust. A practical means of removing this dust is with a scrubber mounted directly on the mining machine. Pilot-plant tests have been in progress at the Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, Pa., on the recovery of manganese from open-hearth slag.3/4/5/ In the process, 1 the slag is first reduced in a blast furnace to make a high-phosphorus spiegeleisen containing 12 to 22 percent manganese. A slag containing 55 to 60 percent manganese is made from this spiegel by oxidation in a basic-lined converter. The metal from this blowing operation contains about 3 percent phosphorus, 1 percent manganese, and less than 1 percent carbon. Economic efficiency in the manganese-recovery process requires that this metal be converted into steel. Because of its high phosphorus content the metal is suitable for blowing in a basic-lined converter. In most of the tests described in this report, metal of this composition was used as the starting material in a 1-ton, side-blown, basic-lined converter. Although basic-lined converters are not used for steel production in the United states, in Europe a considerable portion of the steel is made in them. Open hearths largely have replaced converters for steelmaking in the United States; mainly because open-hearth steels have better physical properties than converter steels because of lower nitrogen and phosphorus contents. However, by improving converter design and operating technique during the past 15 years, metallurgists have found that low-nitrogen steels with physical properties equal to open-hearth steels can be produced in converters.6/ Tests at Jones & Laughlin steel Corp. with side-blown, acid-lined converters of 3 and 22 tons capacity showed that steel with a low nitrogen content comparable to that of open hearths operating on scrap charges could be made by surface blowing.7/

An experimental iron blast furnace of 3-foot-diameter hearth, producing about 12 tons of metal per day, was operated for 2 weeks with various proportions of anthracite replacing a corresponding amount of coke. The furnace operated well with anthracite in amounts up to 40 percent of the total fuel and produced metal of uniformly low sulfur and normal silicon contents. An increase to 50 percent anthracite during two attempts resulted in poor operation and the charge hung in the s haft of the furnace. INTRODUCTION Anthracite production in Pennsylvania decreased from 84,400,000 net tons in 1926 to 40,600,000 net tons in 1952, and there was a further decline in 1953 to 30,900,000 net tons. Employment in the anthracite industry dropped from 165,000 men working an average of 244 days per year in 1926 to 57,900 working an average of 163 days per year in 1953,3/ which has naturally resulted in considerable unemployment in the region. The industry is actively engaged in promoting new uses for anthracite to increase the demand and thus improve economic conditions in the region. One possibility is the use of anthracite to replace part of the coke for smelting iron ore in blast furnaces. The tests in this report were made to determine whether this use of anthracite would be feasible.

Provide better ventilation for mines by reducing air leakage around stoppings. Approach Most stoppings are constructed of concrete blocks and trowelled-on mortar and are not very airtight. Bureau of Mines research has shown that brushing on modified mortar containing fiberglass and/or other additives, that enhance strength and adhesion, minimizes air leakage around and through the stoppings. Airtightness is an important factor in building stoppings since an airtight stopping will provide for more efficient ventilation airflow and more cost-efficient use of the mine's ventilation system. "In Part 1 of this two-part paper the characteristics of mine disasters and their effects are presented with case studies from coal, metal and non-metal mines leading to an amplification of their causes and opportunities for control. The disasters discussed encompass those which threaten the health and the safety of miners and those which affect the general population. In Part 2 of the paper, which will be published in the November 1995 issue of Natural Resources Forum, the approaches to hazard and disaster control are reviewed with particular attention to laws and regulations to promote health and safety at the workplace, and general welfare in mining communities. Further, a systems approach to disaster control is outlined.The mining industry is one of the three basic industries the other two being agriculture, and wildlife and fisheries. It is the process of mining which makes available the riches of the earth - the energy and mineral resources - to benefit humanity. In fact the progress of the human race through the ages is indelibly attached to prowess in exploiting these riches. The stone, iron and bronze ages are markers not just of a time in history but achievements of monumental proportions in the mining and beneficiation of natural resources. Even in agriculture, the remarkable success stories are associated with the prudent use of mined products to enhance production and productivity. The significance of a thriving mining industry to the wealth and security of a nation is therefore unquestioned.Unfortunately, the public's image of the mining industry is often associated with the mining disasters which receive wide coverage in the local and national media. Mine disasters command tremendous attention because of their infrequent occurrence and the extent of human suffering involved. Whether it is an explosion or a fire, or the opening or closing of a mine, the lives of people are touched by the personal and societal impacts of these events.Courts of inquiry of mining disasters have often concluded that the disaster situation was ever present and could have been detected with diligent search. In addition human error has been identified as one of the most frequent immediate causes for the precipitation of the disaster. For the most part, then, mining disasters are caused by man."

A quick, safe, and effective method has been developed that allows workers to clean their dust laden work clothing periodically throughout the day. For the mining industry, this technique is much more effective than the current federally approved method of using a vacuuming system. This newly designed method is relatively inexpensive and can be easily installed at any operation to allow workers to clean their clothing without contaminating the worker, the work environment. or co-workers to elevated respirable dust levels. This clothes cleaning process uses an air spray manifold to blow dust from a worker's clothing in an enclosed booth, which combines the dust for capture and removal by a baghouse dust collector. Since the air exhausted by the dust collector causes the booth to be under negative pressure. no measurable quantities of dust were ever measure escaping from the booth to contaminate the work environment and/or other workers. The worker performing the cleaning process is required to wear a half-mask fit- tested respirator with an N 100 filter, hearing protection, and full seal goggles. Dust samples taken inside the respirator of test personnel performing the clothes cleaning process showed very minimal to no respirable dust. This clothes cleaning process was performed in less than 20 seconds and was significantly y cleaner than either the Federally approved method of vacuuming, or the most common method or using a single compressed air hose. It was also determined during this research that polyester-cotton blend coveralls clean more effectively than coveralls which are 100 percent cotton. The newly designed clothes cleaning process has potential application to any industry where workers' clothing becomes contaminated with most any type of dust or product.

Pegmatite dikes, veins, intrusive sills, contact metamorphic, and disseminated deposits as well as tactite deposits in the former major tungsten-producing districts were investigated. A general geographic pattern of beryllium mineralization was found to be concentrated along a wide belt in eastern Nevada extending from the Ruby Mountains, Elko County, south through the Fish Creek Range, Eureka County, the Snake Range, White Pine County to the Virgin Mountains in Clark County, Nev., and Mohave County, Ariz. Sporadic occurrences of beryllium are in central and southern Nevada, and in the pegmatite dikes of San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego Counties, Calif., and the granite masses of the southern Inyo Mountains, Inyo County, Calif. Principal company activities are centered in the Snake Range, Fish Creek Range, and the Virgin Mountains, Nev., and the Inyo Mountains, Calif. Other areas in California and Nevada have been superficially explored with results indicating either limited or widespread, but submarginal, mineralization. Although beryllium was found to occur, to some extent, in many of the deposits, mining has been hindered by the lack of a market for beryllium ores and concentrates other than standard-grade beryl and also by the erratic pattern of mineralization and the high exploration and beneficiation costs required to produce a marketable product.

This report describes a trip to Europe in the interest of safety in coal mines. It reviews the Eighth International Conference of Directors of Safety in Mines Re-search, which met in Dortmund-Derne, Germany, July 5-10, 1954, to discuss results of studies made in different countries to improve health and safety conditions under-ground. It also summarizes information on subjects of special interest in the United States gained by the writer in visits to mining experiment stations in Belgium, France, and England. The efforts being made to protect life and property underground were discussed, and ideas and experiences were interchanged freely, not only during the conference but also during visits to the several countries. Helpful information was obtained on many topics of interest, but time did not permit as thorough a discussion on some of them as might be desired.

Studies on coal mine drainage sludge densification have led to the following conclusions: 1. Coal mine waters containing iron principally in the ferrous (Fea+) state can be treated by a modification of the commonly practiced lime neutralization process to yield a ferromagnetic sludge. The sludge, presumably composed in large part of a hydrated ferrosoferric oxide (Fe304.xH20), is much denser and faster settling than the ordinary "yellowboy" sludge obtained by lime neutralization and aeration at ambient temperatures. 2. The magnetic sludge preparation technique involves (quantitative) precipitation of iron (largely as Fe(OH)2) by the addition of hydrated lime to a pH of 8.5, separation of the resulting sludge from the aqueous phase, and heating of the sludge concentrate to at least 80 C (176 F), preferably higher, followed by mild aeration. 3. Magnesium, present as Mg2 in most coal mine drainage waters, inhibits the formation of the magnetic sludge. This inhibition can be adequately minimized by keeping the pH below 9.6 during lime addition (thus avoiding the coprecipitation of Mg(OH)2) and by separating the sludge from the bulk of the aqueous phase before the heating step, as indicated in (2) above. 4. Aluminum, commonly present in coal mine drainage waters, also inhibits the formation of the magnetic sludge. This inhibition is of practical significance when the molar ratio of aluminum/total iron is greater than 0.18. Below this value, sludges are still appreciably magnetic, but are bulkier and slower settling than those obtained when aluminum is absent. Unlike magnesium inhibition, aluminum inhibition cannot be minimized by the scheme indicated above, since aluminum precipitates as Al(OH)3 near pH 4 and remains dispersed within the sludge. 5. The limitation on aluminum content is probably the most serious restriction affecting the feasibility of the magnetic sludge process as presently conceived. Nevertheless, a limited review of available water quality data has indicated that, in terms of relative acid and iron loadings, a significant number of major coal mine discharges in the eastern Ohio River basin may be amenable to treatment by a magnetic sludge process. 6. Data from tests on the use of magnetic seeding materials indicate that seeding did not enhance the formation of a magnetic sludge under the experimental conditions employed.

Since 1937 the Bureau of Mines has conducted investigations to provide the technical information necessary to guide the safe use of diesel engines underground in the United States. Coincident with the beginning of the technical study, a survey was made of State regulations pertaining to the use of internal-combustion engines underground.3/ At that time it was found that owing to the known hazards of gasoline locomotives, many States had enacted legislation or regulations limiting or prohibiting their use underground. Some of this legislation prohibited, or could be interpreted as prohibiting, the use of any type of internal-combustion engines in underground workings. After World War II diesel-powered equipment was introduced underground in many States, and pertinent questions are received frequently by the Bureau of Mines about the regulations that permit such applications. Because it was known that new and revised regulations had been made effective in some States in the nearly 20 years that have elapsed since the previous survey,3/ the Bureau decided that a review of the latest regulations in the leading mineral-producing States would be a valuable source of information for those engaged in the production of minerals as well as others. Accordingly, where feasible, this report includes abstracts of State laws and regulations as they affect the use of internal-combustion engines underground, particularly diesel engines. The substance of comments from State officials also are included when these appear to be helpful to interpretation of the regulations.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of a heavy liquid in combination with fluid cyclones to separate brucite from a Nevada ore on a continuous basis, using a mixture of dibromomethane and trichloroethylene having a density of 2.44 grams per cubic centimeter. Single-stage cyclone separation produced a concentrate that contained 84 percent of the total magnesia at a grade, on a calcined basis, of 95.6 percent MgO.

The K.T. Dome Mine in Owen and Henry Counties, Ky., has been operated intermittently under several different owners since the early nineteen hundreds. No record of total production is available, but it is said that during 1943 and 1944, while being operated by the Twin Valley Mining Co., 30 cars of zinc concentrates and 10 cars of lead concentrates were shipped. The vein can be traced for about 10 miles along the strike from Lockport, Henry County, to Big Twin Creek in Owen County. It pinches and swells both vertically and horizontally and is reported to average 20 inches in width. In order to develop additional reserves on the property, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes on the south extension of the vein. Drilling disclosed that the vein dips to the west on the south side of the Kentucky River and is continuous along the strike and in depth. However, the extent of mineralization in the vein varies widely.
