PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in level-dependent hearing protectors and inexpensive personal acoustic monitors. RESEARCH SUMMARY: The results of previous NIOSH research show that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals and that miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and gender. Using hearing thresholds at 4,000 Hz as an indicator, coal miners experience hearing loss 2.5 to 3 times greater than would be expected for persons not exposed to occupational noise. At age 50, 90% of coal miners and 49% of metal/nonmetal miners were found to have a hearing impairment. In comparison, only 9% of a nonoccupationally exposed control group had a hearing impairment at age 50.

Round Mountain Gold (RMG) in cen­tral Nevada, reports that over a nine-year period and a million operating hours, its fleet of 150-ton and 190-ton haul trucks has averaged better than 93% availability, with some of the trucks approaching 70,000 operating hours. Repair costs have been far below industry averages. Mine operations manager Pete Kesl credits the high availability and low repair costs to a succession of Product Support Agreements between RMG and Caterpillar dealer Cashman Equipment. He adds that good equipment and a high level of trust and co­operation between all parties to these agreements have been essential to their success at Round Mountain.

In 1988, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 5,640-acre Soda Mountain Wilderness Study Area (OR-011-017), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Jackson County, OR, about 30 miles south-east of Medford. The study area covers most of the south-facing slope of 6,071-ft Soda Mountain. Geologically, the area is underlain by Oligocene to Pliocene basaltic andesite flows and less extensive intrusive rocks of the western Cascade Mountains. In addition, there is a 3/4-mile-diameter area of kaolinized and silicified rhyolite tuff, which appears to have intruded the andesite, and is host to epithermal gold mineralization.

Longwall roof behavior is characterized by strata displacements in both the face-to-waste (horizontal) and roof-to-f1oor (vertical) direc-tions. The roof support structure provides resistance to this motion by translation of these displacements into vertical and horizontal support loading. Observations indicate that the shield reacts with both a vertical and horizontal force to uniaxial convergence (displacement). However, there are different magnitudes depending on whether the displacement is vertical or horizontal. This makes it possible to use supports as monitors of strata activity and loading. The Bureau of Mines examined this behavior using a linear elastic model of the support structure with two degrees of freedom. Vertical and horizontal load reactions were related to associated displacement actions of the strata. This was done by determining the stiffness of the shield under controlled vertical and horizontal displacement motions in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. This report provides example predictions of strata convergence and isolation of horizontal support loading due to vertical roof convergence using the linear elastic shield model. The report also examines efforts to determine strata behavior by direct measurement of support displacement.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Robena No. 4, located near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief tine periods. With present instrumentation, the spectrum can be covered from 40 Hz to 400 kHz. It is recorded using broad-band analog magnetic tape, and the noise data are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise envelopes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of tine to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots. The general results are that at frequencies below 10 kHz, power line noise within the mine is severe. Impulsive noise is severe near arcing trolleys, and at lower frequencies near any transmission line. Carrier trolley phone signals and harmonics are strong throughout the mine whenever the trolley phone is in operation. All the coal lands in Alaska are publicly owned, and the Federal Government is the principal consumer of coal. Therefore the Government has long been concerned with the wise utilization of the coal reserves of Alaska as well as with the availability of coals meeting the specifications for use in various Government installations. Coal preparation plays a key role in both of these areas of interest. The proper choice and operation of coal-washing equipment permits the mining of inferior deposits, minimizes waste of coal in preparation, and assures a prepared product of the best quality obtainable from the raw coal. Thus, from time to time, the Bureau of Mines has made washability examinations on most of the coals mined in Alaska. Generally, these examinations were made when new mines or new beds were opened, when construction of new preparation plants was being considered, or when the operation of existing plants could be improved by better knowledge of the raw coal. The purpose of this report is to bring together all the washability data available on the coals of the Matanuska Valley and Beluga River fields. The pattern of energy development for the rapidly growing Anchorage area is not clear at this time. Formerly coal was the only fuel available for large-scale space heating and power generation. More recently both oil and natural gas have entered the market, and several hydroelectric projects have been completed. Additional major hydroelectric projects are being considered. The role that will be played by coal in this competitive energy market is uncertain. However I if coal is the fuel used in future power plants or industrial installations, the information contained in this report will be useful in indicating the quality of the coals that can be supplied and in selecting proper preparation techniques.

"INTRODUCTIONRecent investigations at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City indicate that metallurgists have given little attention to the occurrence of jarosite minerals in the oxidized ores of lead and silver. These investigations have also emphasized the importance of knowing when these minerals occur in the oxidized ores, especially those containing lead, silver, and gold, as their presence is a material factor in selecting a suitable kind of treatment. Since the question of the occurrence of jarosites in oxidized ores has come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, investigation has indicated that plumbojarosite and argentojarosite are quite common. These two minerals appear to be widely distributed and probably escaped recognition by persons who had attempted to treat certain oxidized lead ores in which the jarosite minerals represented a material portion of the metal content.Consideration of the physical characteristics of the jarosites also indicates that in many cases failure to treat some of the oxidized lead ores with success has been directly due to the fact that the greater portion of their lead and silver content was present as plumbojarosite and argentojarosite. The data and the description of these minerals given in the body of this paper indi¬cate that attempts to recover lead and silver from ores in which appreciable amounts of the metals occur as plumbojarosite and argentojaeosite would be unsuccessful if confined to gravity methods of concentration. There are un-doubtedly considerable tonnages of oxidized lead ores in the various mining regions of this and other countries, and it is quite probable that in some of these ores the metal content of lead and silver may be largely anglesite (lead sulphate) and cerussite (lead carbonate) but that they will also contain cerargyrite (silver chloride), argentojarosite, and plumbojarosite. The treatment of such ores therefore presents an important problem, since a product is discarded from ores from which the recoveries of lead and silver have been below 70 per cent which is probably too low-grade to warrant aftertreatment by any process now in use."

This Bureau of Mines publication describes the hardware system and software package for the semiautomatic acquisition and automatic processing of high-resolution mass spectrographic plates. The semiautomatic data acquisition allows a tenfold saving of time compared with manual data acquisition. Automatic processing of the high-resolution data to yield exact masses, intensity, and the corresponding empirical formulas is accomplished by efficient programming on a small, inexpensive, programmable calculator system.

The Bureau of Mines investigated severe coal mine roof support problems along a section of main entries in the Pittsburgh coalbed in southwestern Pennsylvania to identify the causative factors. The mine roof was examined in detail, and various sedimentary structures are described that contributed directly to irregular and unstable roof. Small-scale paleochannels, scours, and related slickensides were identified as the leading cause of bad roof, and isopach maps were prepared to illustrate a method whereby the presence of these structures could be inferred in advance of mining. Probably second in importance was the occurrence of relatively incompetent flaggy, poorly cemented sandstone, weakened by coal and micaceous laminea. No effect of in situ stresses on roof stability was detected.

The Copper King copper-gold-silver deposit was discovered about 1880. Various individuals and companies have been interested in the deposit and considerable work has been done, although production, if any, has been small. The deposit is located in the western part of Laramie County, Wyo., and is favorably situated with respect to rail and truck transportation and high-tension power facilities. Mild summers and cold winters characterize the climate. Precipitation averages between 16 and 17 inches annually, with considerable snowfall in the winter. Permanent streams are small and most available water in being stored for use by Cheyenne, Wyo. Range grasses comprise the bulk of the vegetation, with small trees and shrubs common in the most rugged areas.

Mathematical expressions are derived for the histories of the pressure, flame radius, mass fraction burned, and burned and unburned gas temperatures associated with a spherical flame propagating concentrically in a spherical vessel. The equations are solved numerically for a 9.5 pct CH4/air mixture using the best available information for the burning velocity, expansion ratio, and specific heat ratio. Calculated histories are in complete accord with experimental measurements. The accuracy of calculated histories is determined relative to errors in the system parameters, and it is found that 10 pct errors in either the burning velocity or the expansion ratio results in a 40-pct error in the pressure history. A 10-pct error in either burned or unburned specific heat ratio results in a 22-pct error &apos;in the pressure history. It was further established that the usual assumption of constant specific heat ratio is unacceptable, but equating the burned and unburned specific heat ratios result in no apparent error in the histories. The cubic law (P = Kt3 + Po) is derived and discussed, and it is found that the law is valid only during the early period (P<2 atm) of flame growth.

For a study such as this, which summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the numerous U.S. Bureau of Mines country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in their country and regional reports that comprise the five other volumes of the international studies of the Minerals Yearbook, it is clearly impossible to cite all sources of information used in its presentation, but some recognition seems due. Generally speaking, this study and its related detailed studies on countries and areas would be much more difficult, if not impossible, without the efforts of the personnel of our counterpart agencies throughout the world. Information they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or those of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations on which this work rests. Thus, we must begin by expressing our appreciation to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies for their contributions.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated creep and other properties of extruded Zn-30 pct-AI alloys containing 0 to 0.7 pct Mg. The alloys were extruded both above and below the Zn-Al eutectoid temperature of 275° C. Creep behavior is defined for the alloys as extruded and after various heat treatments. Tensile properties, hardness, thermal expansivity, impact resistance, and microstructures are given. The alloys, either with or without magnesium, required substantially less pressure for extrusion near 275° C than at higher or lower temperatures. The alloys containing magnesium exhibited significantly greater hardness, tensile strength, and creep resistance, but much lower ductility than the 2n-30 pct Al alloy. The properties were very sensitive to the processing conditions.

Methane concentration peaks were measured by the Bureau of Mines at coal mine working faces during entry development. The statistical distribution of peaks was found to be normal or log normal depending on how well the methane was being mixed into the ventilation airstream. A normal distribution indicated good mixing, whereas a log-normal distribution indicated that mixing was poor. In addition, the "highest" peaks over selected intervals were found to fit a type I extreme-value distribution, a result similar to that obtained while mining longwall faces.

In comparison, only 9% of a nonoccupationally exposed control group had a hearing impairment at age 50. There are numerous barriers to the prevention of hearing loss among miners. In an effort to overcome some of these obstacles, this work was initiated to evaluate practical technological advances in level-dependent hearing protectors and inexpensive personal acoustic monitors. Experiments will involve analysis of this new technology under both laboratory and field conditions. Laboratory components will consist of controlled studies using an anthropometrically correct test fixture as well as human subjects to evaluate the adequacy/effectiveness of various hearing protective devices. Electroacoustical performance testing of new noise monitors will also be conducted in a laboratory setting. Subsequent field studies will determine the actual usefulness and practicality of the personal protective/monitoring equipment as used in different mining situations. It is anticipated that increased on-the-spot awareness of hazardous noise levels and the availability of better-suited hearing protectors will provide a degree of protection beyond what is currently attained in different mining environments. Therefore, the intent of this project is to identify and adapt new acoustical technologies and products that have a direct application to individual mine workers. With increased knowledge of these technological advances, a greater demand for similar devices will likely occur, which, in turn, will lead to a better understanding and awareness of hearing loss prevention methods throughout the mining community. The ultimate goal is for widespread integration of useful hearing loss prevention products and devices into the daily routines of miners

The industrial hygiene and safety aspects with internal combustion engine in mining systems is truly interdisciplinary and encompasses many fields such as mine ventilation, exhaust gas and particulate analyses, mine atmospheric environment monitoring, mathematical modeling of generation, dilution and dispersion of pollutants in ventilation systems, and engine testing and approval. Mathematical models of the dilution and dispersion of diesel exhaust contaminants can be useful only if these models can be validated. In this research report, experiments that were specially designed for the above purpose are described. These experiments were conducted in the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Safety Research Coal Mine, in Bruceton, Pa. On the basis of this study, the data collected, and further review of available literature, it is concluded that mathematical models of dilution and dispersion are useful tools for mine ventilation planning. Additional objectives of this study about which conclusions and recommendations are reported here include: (a) evaluation of mine atmosphere contaminant monitoring systems; (b) optimum sampling site locations; (c) model sensitivity and error analyses; (d) computer coding of mathematical models; and (e) development of a diesel bibliography. While an extensive bibliography on diesels is provided in this report, Volume II of this final report has 511 references.

Before going directly to the analysis, it would be good to summar¬ize explosion-proof container approval methods. Both Magison (52) and Short (84) state that in general practice, the systems are certified for: 1. a rugged enclosure able to withstand an internal explosion but not allow explosively hot gases to escape, and 2. maximum surface temperature, with equipment operating inside, that will not ignite the surrounding atmosphere. Also, testing insures that any material in contact with the container surface will not be ignited by a hot spot. Associated with the first practice, the enclosures are inspected for: 1. a safe flange gap width, 2. a pressure increase during ignition, and 3. an hydrostatic pressure withstand level. The hydrostatic pressure level is almost always determined by a meas¬ured ignition-pressure test and is usually applied to prove the mechan¬ical design to some safety factor. Consequently, explosion-proof enclosure testing includes temper¬ature, permissible flame gap, and pressure. Specifications and prev¬ious research also can be similarly separated even though some interre¬lation exists between the flame gap size and internal enclosure pressure during an explosion. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research to devise substitute corrosion-resistant materials by using ion implantation to form alloyed regions near the surfaces of metals. These alloys were prepared by implanting 25-kev Cr+ and/or Ni+ ions into iron. Their resistance to corrosive attack was evaluated by determining their anodic polarization behavior under potentiodynamic conditions in a solution containing sodium chloride, boric acid, and sodium borate. These electrochemical studies have shown that the general corrosion resistance of ion-implanted alloys was comparable to nominally equivalent bulk alloys. The pitting-corrosion resistance of the ion-implanted alloys was superior to that of iron, although not as good as that of most of the bulk alloys tested.

"A gratifying decrease is noticeable in the number of men killed in the coal minas of the United States during the past six months as compared to the quantity of coal produced.During July last year, when 221 men lost their lives, the production of coal was over 50 million tons. In January, 1920, the production had increased to 56 million tons, or 11 per cent, while the fatalities, instead of increasing proportionately, actually decreased to 166, or nearly 15 per cent. Nor is this decrease a mere accident or coincidence peculiar to the month of January, as may be seen from the following table.From the figures shown above it may be observed that the average monthly production for January and the five months immediately preceding, was 49,500,000, or only 2 per cent below that for July, while the average number of men killed was 183, or a decrease of over 17 per cent."
