The Bureau of Mines has studied the fracturing produced in the vicinity of large-diameter blastholes in Lithonia granite. Cores were taken from the vicinity of AN-FO production blasts and examined using a total of seven laboratory and field measurement techniques to delineate zones of damage and evaluate the effectiveness of the seven diagnostic tests for fracture-state determination. Laboratory measurements of acoustic pulse velocity, porosity, permeability, compressive strength, and Young's modulus indicated the extent of fracturing with the acoustic techniques providing the best means of distinguishing between fractured and unfractured core. A severely fractured zone was found to extend approximately 25 inches (64 cm) from the center of the 6-l/2-inch blastholes, equivalent to 8 blast-hole radii. A second zone, characterized by a lesser degree of fracturing extended from 25 to 45 inches (64 to 114 cm) or 8-to l4-blasthole radii. Beyond 45 inches (114 cm) the rock was undamaged.

All bituminous-coal mines, by the nature of their product and inherent gassy tendencies, are subject to explosions or mine fires. The evolution from large, hand-loading sections employing numerous men and containing open-type equipment, lights, and nonpermissible explosives to small, concentrated mechanical sections with but few well-supervised men utilizing modern preventive equipment has not altered this premise. Mine catastrophes such as Centralia and New Orient No. 2, as well as recent disasters of less magnitude, have refuted the trend of thinking that modern equipment, will prevent or localize explosions and prevent widespread or loss of life.

The Bureau of Mines recorded both particle accelerations and velocities from one-stick and production blasts at Eagle-Picher Industries' Shullsburg mine, Shullsburg, Wis., to test the effectiveness of square root scaling in grouping underground blast vibrations and to determine the effects of rock type and mine geometry on blast vibrations. Although the charge weights of subsequent delay periods sometimes exceeded the charge weight of the zero-delay period, both acceleration and velocity records showed that the zero-delay portion of the Shullsburg production blasts produced the highest vibration amplitudes. Because of the restricted range of charge weights in the Shullsburg experiments, no statistical determination of an appropriate scaling factor could be made. However, the square root scaled peak particle velocity data from the Shullsburg production blasts grouped well within the approximate band-width of vibration data obtained by the Bureau from quarry blasts in many different rock types. This indicates that scaling by some factor, perhaps the square root or cube root of the charge weight, may be an effective way to group and study vibration data from underground blasts. Further research is needed to determine which scaling factor is best for underground blasting.

The practice of roof bolting, now recognized as an effective method of support, is based largely on rule of thumb. Among the various applications of bolting, the support of stratified mine roof is by far the most common. The general principles relating to this type of reinforcement are presented in two companion reports; the first describes the function of the bolts, the bolting pattern, and the behavior of bolted roof (1), 2/ and the second describes the design of the models and the theory of the experimental method (2). This report presents a rational method for designing systems of vertical bolts to reinforce horizontally bedded mine roof, developed from model tests. The structure treated herein may be described as follows: The immediate roof, consisting of beds of like material and equal thickness with no bond between them, is reinforced by vertical bolts installed in straight lines across the opening; the case of suspension is excluded because the bolts are assumed not to extend above the immediate roof. The assumption is made that the behavior of the lowest bed approximates that of a rectangular plate clamped along two opposite sides (the ribs). These specifications represent approximately the roof conditions encountered in mining bedded deposits of all kinds - coal, potash, iron ore, etc. Thus, for the design of a roof-bolting system a quantitative solution to the following problem is required: For a roof composed of beds of given thickness and physical properties, how does the support depend upon the length, spacing, and tightness of the bolts?

"In connection with the proposed use of Cordeau-Bickford to fire L.O.X. (liquid oxygen explosives) in well drill holes, the question has arisen as to the effect of very low temperatures on (1) the rate of detonation of Cordeau-Bickford; (2) the sensitiveness to detonation of its TNT filling; and (3) the lead covering of Cordeau-Bickford.The Cordeau-Bickford used in this investigation was the standard 6 mm. size, such as is regularly used in blasting, and was manufactured and furnished by the Ensign-Bickford Company, Simsbury, Conn. All pieces tested were taken from rolls, all of which were from the same melted batch of TNT in order that all the pieces tested might be as nearly identical as possible.Different portions of this Cordeau-Bickford were tested plain (not countered), countered, and double countered. The countering and double countering was carried out by the manufacturer prior to shipment.The determination of the temperature at the instant of making a test was accomplished by the use of a Leeds and Northrup potentiometer and copper constantan thermocouples. Each couple was made from No. 28 B & S gage wire with short junctions. One junction was inserted in a hole drilled by a No. 60 drill through one lead wall of the Cordeau-Bickford to approximately the opposite wall, so that this junction was in the center of the TNT filling while the other junction was immersed in ice water. The potentiometer readings in millivolts were converted to °C. from the calibration curve of the thermocouple wire,"

The Bureau of Mines used an electrolytic tank model to investigate the response of guard electrodes of different dimensions under different simulated reservoir conditions. Sandstone disks from the Berea and Connellsville Formations were used as resistive beds in the model, and agar gel or water was used as conductive beds. In the experiments, bed thickness, hole diameter, mud resistivity, and bed resistivity were varied. The guard electrode is an excellent tool for determining true bed resistivity in the thin-bedded oil reservoirs of the Appalachian area. Vertical resolution and resistivity values are good when there is little or no invasion. Resistivity values are near true bed resistivity in beds thicker than about six hole diameters when the electrode-to-hole-diameter ratio is close to 1. However, low-resistivity muds cause false peaks to appear on the logs near bed boundaries in thick beds, and for resistive beds having a thickness approximately three to five times the hole diameter, apparent resistivities tend to be excessively high when mud resistivity is low.

The Bureau of Mines (Bureau) reviewed all available information regarding geologic and depositional processes contributing to potential coastal and offshore platinum group metal (PGM) placer deposits around the Goodnews Bay Mining District. The Bureau found that favorable environments for PGM along with gold and chromite enrichment include: (1) buried paleofluvial channels; (2) recent paleofluvial channels with little marine sediment overburden, (3) beach deposits, particularly in the upper swash zone and near back beach environments; (4) paleostrand lines; (5) shoal lag deposits inside the mouths of Goodnews and Chagvan bays; and (6) bases of far offshore tidal ridges which may represent reworked glacial deposits. Limited geologic and compositional (assay) data prevent determination of deposit size and grade of PGM mineralization for each deposit class. Future geologic sampling requirements for demonstration of identifiable offshore and beach PGM-bearing placers are discussed. Beach and offshore sampling programs conducted by the Bureau in 1986 will contribute additional information providing verification of specific deposit classes.

Fire has been one of man's most useful tools through the ages and certainly is a "must" for industrial progress but when uncontrolled is one of the most destructive agencies. This fact is even more important in a coal mine, where many persons and much expensive equipment are confined in a relatively small area. Means of escape from a burning area, as well as from the products of combustion, are often limited; and in many instances the entire surroundings are combustible. Numerous mine fires, which resulted in a high death toll and great financial loss through the years, have caused mine owners to search for the best fire-fighting equipment; much of this has been installed, the quantity depending largely upon the experience of the individual companies or neighboring mines in certain coalfields. A mine owner or operator has meager published information on the actual fire protection afforded and systems of fire-fighting inaugurated in the coalfields, by which he could compare his efforts and get some idea of the adequacy of his own protection. To further general knowledge of the subject, it was decided to survey a representative number of mines in the field and show what has been accomplished. Representative mines were selected in various coal beds; some had similar tonnage, so comparison could be made if desired.

Aqueous C12-02 leaching procedures developed by the Bureau of Mines to produce zinc chloride from zinc sulfide bulk concentrates were effective in extracting 99 pct of the zinc and 97 pet of the silver contained in samples of massive seafloor sulfides from the southern Juan de Fuca Ridge. Zinc sulfide (sphalerite and wurtzite) mineralization comprised 55 and 88 pct of two specimens provided by the U.S. Geological Survey for this study. Minor occurrences of galena, chalcopyrite, and other minerals in the sulfides permitted the recovery of pregnant liquors that were low in metal values other than zinc, which were successfully purified by a two-step cementation procedure using zinc dust.

"This paper presents an analysis of the effect of the dynamics of bit wear on dust generation. Two surveys have been conducted in order to assess the mechanism and type of bit wear and to evaluate the impact of bit wear on the productivity of the continuous miners. Used bits were collected from the underground coal mines and these used bits were utilized in laboratory coal cutting. The effect of bit wear on dust generation has been quantified and its impacted on dust generation and ventilation system has been exemplified.INTRODUCTION Research has reduced the prevalence of Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis from 15 to 5 percent according to NIOSH reports (Breslin 1982). However CWP still have not been eliminated as a hazard to mine workers. To prevent coal workers from having black lung MSHA has established a very strict standard for coal mine operations (2.0 mg/m3 with silica content equal to or less than 0.1 mg/m3,). There are numerous coal operations still experiencing great difficulty with meeting the 2mg/m3 dust standard. Among these are the longwall sections and continuous mining sections. In order to meet the rising demand of energy and coal, the number of longwall operations and continuous mining operations would have to be increased. Thus a long term research commitment is required to develop basic solutions that are more generic and greater benefit to the mining and mineral industry.In continuous-mining operations, the miners are exposed to the dust produced during the fragmentation of the coal from the face plus the dust produced during loading and transferring of the coal. The fragmentation process generates most of the respirable dust. The amount of dust generated during fragmentation depended on the coal properties, cutting parameters and cutting bit configuration. Bit wear changes bit configuration, therefore, it also affects dust generation. Bit wear can be defined as the removal of material from surface as a result of mechanical action. In soft coal mines bit wear may not be a serious problem but in hard coal seams bit wear is very significant. In addition, as the good coal seams are depleted, the operators are mining thin seams and the seams with rock partings. During cutting these seams operators are sometimes forced to cut roof and floor rock or rock partings which result in more rapid wear of bits."

[The blast-furnace operator is often confronted with the problem of determining the size of the materials which are used in the furnace burden. The statement is heard that the coke is larger or smaller or that certain ore is finer than that previously used. A screen analysis of the materials used gives a measure of the different sizes of materials in an aggregate. When one is fine and the other is coarse, the difference is obvious; but when the materials are of similar sire, it is more difficult to estimate the degree of finances or coarseness. In considering raw materials it would be desirable to be able to judge the size of the radio ideal materials entering the furnace and the burden as a whole, by one representative value, such as the average size of particle. Previous work by Perrott and Kinney3 developed a method for measuring the average size of particle in a mass of finely ground materials, and an attempt will be made to apply this method to the materials included in the blast-furnace charge and to the entire burden.]

This Bureau of Mines report describes photo lineaments obtained from stereoscopic examination of vertical aerial photographs and by the Ronchi grating study of aerial photoindex sheets. The photolineaments are compared with the trends of oriented fracture systems procured by measuring the compass direction of joints in bedrock. The relative reliability of the methods is shown, and the results are presented in graphical, tabular, and written form. Analyses of field measurements of strikes of bedrock joints in the project area indicate for the most part two intersecting sets of major joints oriented N 76° W -N 15° E, and N 57° W -N 27° E. The analyses of lineaments determined by stereoscopic examination of aerial photographs show dominant trends of lineament zones of weakness to be an average of N 65° W -N 20° E. Analysis of lineaments found by Ronchi grid viewing of aerial photoindex sheets indicate dominant trends of N 70° W -N 27° E. The three methods give similar findings and verify the work of previous authors. The Ronchi grid method is a useful guide, but it cannot be substituted for the two more painstaking methods.

"Among the recently patented detonating compounds that have been suggested as substitutes for the commonly used fulminate of mercury is the normal lead salt of trinitroresorcin, or styphnic acid. As no data concerning its use or practi¬cability were available, a study of its properties was made in the explosives laboratory at the Bureau of Mines experiment station at Pittsburgh, Pa. This paper embodies the results obtained.Normal lead trinitroresorcinate was first prepared and patented*** by Herz; it probably found some use during the World War, but no record of its performance is available,Preparation of Lead Trinitrpresorcinate.In his patent specifications, Herz states that the normal salt may be obtained in a quantitative way by precipitating a multiple of the equivalent weight of the lead salt of a strong inorganic acid - such as lead nitrate - in the presence of a weak organic acid - such as acetic acid - by heating with a Teak solution of the alkali-metal salts or alkaline-earth salts of trinitroresorcin. Herz gives the following example: 245 grams of dry trinitroresorcinand 290 grams of crystalline sodium carbonate are dissolved in in 18.8 liters of boiling water, to which 77 c.c. of glacial acetic acid is added. The toiling solution is mixed with a boiling solution of 650 grams of lead nitrate in 1.4 liters of water, stirring rapidly; and the mixture is boiled for two minutes, after which it is cooled quickly with constant stirring. The precipitated crystals are then filtered off, washed several times with cold water, and dried."

Water pollution has been an integral part of most mining operations in the past. Most mine planners had designed their mining operations with little or no regard for prevention of water pollution. The main planning element was always the economics of mineral recovery. Quite often the cheapest means of mineral recovery resulted in the largest water pollution problems. Recent water pollution laws have introduced a new economic element - water pollution control costs - to be considered in mine planning. Water pollution control costs can be extremely high. Foresighted planning can minimize these costs and provide better water pollution control. Effective pollution control preplanning can eliminate pollution from active mines and minimize pollution that may occur after completion of mining. Presently available technology can practically eliminate water pollution by treatment of the mine water. Use of water treatment during mining has no effect on the levels of water pollution after treatment ceases and the mine is abandoned. Therefore, this section of the report deals with preplanning to reduce water pollution, both present and future, by using at-source control techniques. Proper planning of mining and pollution control techniques should follow the concept of a complete, comprehensive reclamation plan. This plan should have control measures designed for all phases of mining from initiation through completion. Preplanning involves acquiring complete information concerning the future mine site, defining the reasons why mining could cause pollution from the site, and determination of available techniques to prevent or minimize formation or transportation of pollutants. Location of haulage and access roads and other mine related facilities should be included in preplanning for water pollution control. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the United States Steel Corporation evaluated the progress of methane drainage at the Oak Grove, AL, degasification pattern. Coalbed pressures were monitored between December 1981 and November 1985. Formation pressures, in the lower bench of the Mary Lee Coalbed, were reduced from 400 lbf/in2(ga) in 1977 to 50 lbf/in2(ga) in November 1985. Gas contents of coal cores obtained from monitor wells were compared with coalbed gas contents measured in 1976. Data indicated a 48- to 56-pct reduction within the pattern and a 29-pct reduction at a point 500 ft outside the pattern. The effect of the advance of a section of the Oak Grove Mine on changes in gas and water production rates in the pattern was evaluated. Gas production increases were noted in 12 wells; water production decreases were noted in 6. The times of initial influence indicate the presence of a zone of high permeability within the pattern. This zone correlates well in orientation and location with a fracture zone mined through at the mine. The existence of such fracture zones could have a significant effect on productivity of individual coalbed methane wells.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the results of efforts to develop reasonably priced, reliable mine shaft fire and smoke protection hardware for metal and nonmetal mines. The hardware was incorporated into a viable prototype system that would minimize fire and smoke hazards. The design of the system had to be sufficiently flexible to be utilized in a wide variety of metal and nonmetal mine shaft and shaft station configurations. As a result of long-term, rugged field tests, an improved (second generation) system was developed. The hardware is now commercially available.

The objective was to obtain qualitative information on (1 ) the stress field in a core stub at the bottom, or face , of a cored borehole and (2 ) whether , and at what distance , in terms of core diameters from the face of the borehole , relief of stresses in the core is complete . The photoelastic and brittle lacquer techniques of stress analysis were used to determine the pattern of stresses in two- dimensional models , simulating the bottom of a borehole with a projecting stub of core . The core was stress- free at 1-1 /2 core diameters or more from the face of the simulated borehole . The analyses of the isoclinic and isochromatic patterns in the core near the face of the borehole reveal why core occasionally breaks into thin plates , when core or stress - relief drilling is attempted in highly stressed rock masses , such as heavily loaded mine pillars . stub broke away from the bottom in a hydrostatically loaded artificial rock specimen in a manner indicating that core " wafering" can result from tensile stresses developed in the core when a coring bit penetrates the highly stressed rock mass .

"INTRODUCTION The strategic importance of zinc warranted investigation of the Silver Eagle zinc prospect, which was first examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in January 1943.From October 12, 1943, to March 16, 1944, the Bureau explored the deposit by trenching, core drilling, and sampling to establish the amount and grade of ore and to test for the presence of sulfide-ore minerals at depth.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. "This study analyzed laboratory comminution techniques for respirable mine dust generation and the properties of the resulting dusts. It was the objective of the study to determine the suitability of the resulting dusts in reflecting the properties of natural airborne dust. This paper deals specifically with the amount of contamination introduced into the generated dust as a result of abrasion when using nine different grinding methods. The analysis was made by comparing the content of 25 chemical elements in the lab-generated dusts with the same elements in the airborne coal mine dusts. It was found that all the lab-generated dusts possessed contamination but that several methods produced smaller percentages of contamination and that the residence time in the grinding device was an important factor in the contamination levels. INTRODUCTIONDust in the atmosphere is a health hazard and a major source of occupational diseases in the coal mining industry (Anon., 1980; Merchant, Boehlecke, and Picket-Hamer, 1986). It has been shown that coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is directly related to the inhalation and accumulation of respirable coal dust in coal miners' lungs. In order to effectively protect coal workers from coal dusts, we must have a clear understanding of dust properties including dust generation and dust-lung reaction mechanisms. This requires extensive biomedical research. Dust related research often requires large samples of respirable coal dusts to be collected, either for repeated experiments or stored for future reference. Unfortunately, current sampling instruments are not able to meet this demand. Ali a result, laboratory-generated coal dust ls frequently used as a substitute for coal mine dust in biomedical and other research applications. Now, the questions are how close the characteristics of laboratory-generated dusts are to those of mining-generated dusts and which equipment is moat appropriate for research dust production in the laboratory . These are some of the interests of this research project. The primary objective of this project was to find a laboratory technique which can generate coal dusts possessing properties similar to coal mine dust with respect to particle size distribution, chemical composition, and particle shape and morphology. However, this paper will focus only on the chemical compositions of the prepared dust samples and try to identify the sources of chemical contamination from various size reduction processes."

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and from the data developed to determine: 1. Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. 2. Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. 3. Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation by present-day methods. This report is one in this county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Lee County, Va.
