Bureau of Mines research to develop an in situ retorting recovery method for oil shale has involved field testing of fracturing techniques for creating fluid-flow paths in impermeable oil shale. Electrolinking, hydraulic fracturing without and with sand propping, and explosive fracturing with a liquid explosive were tested in a 25-ft-square, five-spot pattern. These wells were drilled into oil shale at 50-to 88-ft depths near Rock Springs, Wyo. Results of the fracturing tests were evaluated by injecting air into a test well and measuring flow rates and flow profiles in adjacent test wells before and after each test. To identify points of air entry (location of fractures) in wells, flow profiles were determined by use of inflatable packers and by continuous logging with an airflow probe developed during the fracturing program. Electrolinking and hydraulic fracturing without sand propping were relatively ineffective; hydraulic fracturing with sand propping created horizontal fractures with desirable flow capacity; and fracture flow capacity was significantly increased by detonation of nitro-glycerin displaced in the natural and hydraulically induced fracture systems.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a method for separating minerals at magnetic susceptibilities within the diamagnetic susceptibility range. The maximum feed rate varies directly with the square root of the lower limit of permissible susceptibility, while the lower limit of permissible susceptibility varies inversely as the square of the magnetic field strength. Minerals may be separated at particle sizes smaller than possible on conventional dry-type magnetic separators.

The mineral waste disposal system at the Grace Mine, Morgantown, Pa., was designed to minimize environmental effects while allowing much of the waste from the iron mine, mill, and concentrator to be utilized. Standard cost estimating procedures were used by the Bureau of Mines to determine waste disposal costs. Mill tailings and rock waste disposal costs were estimated at $0.151 and $0.276 per ton, respectively, for the 1965-67 production period. Total waste disposal cost was reduced about $0.015 per ton by utilizing part of the waste as aggregate. The net average cost for disposal of all mineral waste was $0.189 per ton.

The purpose of this research was to develop a method to remove copper and tin from the magnetic fraction of incinerated municipal refuse, as recovered by the Bureau of Mines pilot plant in College Park, Md. Copper, present in the scrap in a metallic form bonded to ferrous objects, was amenable to leaching in cupric ammonium carbonate solution. Copper levels in small 5-to 10-lb lots of treated scrap were reduced from the initial level, 0.5 to 0.6 pct, to 0.1 to 0.2 pct. Larger lots of scrap (100 lb) were treated less effectively because of poor contact of solution and scrap. Oxidation in the air or in aerated aqueous solution was applied to liberate tin from the dilute solid solution present on the surface of incinerated tinplate. Shredding of air-oxidized scrap or caustic leaching of scrap oxidized in solution reduced tin levels from the initial 0.25-pct level to about 0.1 pct.

This report covers the preliminary phase of an investigation of clays, shales, and certain rocks in Wisconsin to determine the feasibility of processing lightweight aggregate in the State. The study was extended to include rotary-kiln testing of a limited number of shale samples, and to an appraisal of the Maquoketa shale resources in eastern Wisconsin. A total of 45 samples of clays, shales, and other argillaceous rocks of Wisconsin were tested. The lower Maquoketa shale is the only material found to date that offers possibilities as a source of material that can be processed in a rotary kiln for lightweight aggregate. Bedrock occurrences of the Maquoketa shale are found in the eastern and southwestern parts of the State. The populous southeastern region of Wisconsin presents a large potential marketing area for lightweight aggregate. For this reason special study was directed to the Maquoketa shale in the eastern district.

As part of its regular program to provide timely information on domestic mineral commodities, the Bureau of Mines conducted an engineering appraisal of more than 1,300 lode and placer gold deposits in the United States to deter-mine their gold production potential. While these deposits were estimated to contain over 400 million ounces of gold, only 9 million ounces, or slightly more than 2 percent, was found to be producible at $35 per ounce under prevailing mining and metallurgical technologies. The study revealed that any significant increase in available gold in the United States is most likely to come from the discovery of new sources, intensive exploration and development of the more promising known mineralized areas, and development of new or improved mining and metallurgical techniques.

This Information Circular from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) documents and supplements the information presented in a series of workshops held during 2002 and 2003. The primary intended audience consists of all who are involved in developing and conducting miners' training. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), mine operators reported 240,000 full-time equivalent workers and independent contractors reported 42,000 full-time equivalent workers working on mine property during the year 2000. Unfortunately, these workers have a relatively high risk of suffering serious work-related injuries and illnesses. The mining industry has the highest rate of occupational fatalities among all U.S. industries. The fatality rate is 30 deaths per 100,000 workers compared to 4.6 for all private industry (Morbidity and Mortality Week Report, 2001; NIOSH, 2002). Compared to workers in other industries, miners also have a relatively high rate of nonfatal lost-time injuries, and their injuries tend to be more severe (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1999). Many miners are also exposed to significant health hazards, including coal and silica dust, diesel exhaust, and noise. More than 1000 U.S. miners die of lung disease each year (NIOSH, 1999). Mine safety and health professionals have long recognized training as a critical element of an effective safety and health program. Federal regulations (30 CFR, Parts 46 and 48) require mine operators to provide initial safety and health training to all new miners, as well as a minimum of 8 hours of refresher training each year. The time and money being spent to train U.S. miners is substantial, and so there is a strong and steady demand for new and better mine training materials and methods. A growing concern among mine safety professionals regards the training of new workers. A major change in the mining workforce is anticipated within the next decade. In major segments of mining, especially coal, relatively few workers have been hired since the 1970's. Thus, as an entire cohort of miners in the current workforce nears retirement, the replacement of these employees will require an influx of new workers. New miners may be young people who lack the ability to recognize and respond to mining hazards in an appropriate manner. They may also have had different educational experiences than their older counterparts. Many safety professionals believe that these two cohorts require different approaches to training. The papers in this report should help prepare mine trainers for the changes about to occur in the workforce and acquaint them with strategies they can use to enhance the effectiveness of their training. The first three papers present basic principles for teaching adults. The five remaining papers are intended to illustrate how these principles can be applied to the development and imple¬mentation of effective training for miners. Below is an overview of these papers. 1. Kowalski and Vaught review the process and principles of adult learning. The learning model they present includes a discussion of goals, content, delivery, assessment, and remediation. Adults are viewed as active learners, experienced-based, expert in their own right in specific areas, independent, real-life centered, task-centered, problem-centered, solution-driven, skill-seeking, self-directing, and internally and externally motivated. Basic aspects of curriculum development are briefly reviewed. For further information about adult learning, see Camm and Cullen's paper. 2. Mallett and Reinke's first paper discusses issues related to training new miners who have recently or will soon be entering the mining workforce. These new generations of miners have different learning style preferences and training needs than Baby Boomers and other older miners. Even trainers who have been highly effective in the past should reassess their training styles and their classroom materials to determine if they are prepared to meet the needs of these young new workers. This paper provides information that will help mine trainers communicate across the generation gap. 3. Mallett and Reinke's second paper provide an overview of training evaluation. Trainers and decision-makers are given a framework for planning and assessing training evaluation strategies. The authors present Kirkpatrick's (2001) model of evaluation categories and discuss how to start an evaluation plan and various ways to collect data. They do not provide detailed instruction in evaluation methodologies, but give trainers a review of the things they need to consider when developing an evaluation plan. A good evaluation plan can inform revisions to a training course, assess trainee learning, and/or answer managers' questions about program effectiveness. 4. Brnich, Derick, Mallett, and Vaught discuss a technique for incorporating worker participation into fire prevention and safe equipment operation training. This technique involves development of short (5 to 7 minutes) videotapes coupled with toolbox talks that ground the content of the videos within the context of a miner's workplace. An example of one of these training modules is presented, along with the results of an evaluation performed on its effectiveness at improving miners' understanding of what types of information they should be sure to communicate during a mine emergency. 5. Wiehagen, Conrad, Friend, and Rethi discuss on-the-job training (OJT) as a method for teaching miners safety and production skills. Much of the training is done by experienced workers. This paper describes how small investments can help improve the effectiveness of on-the-job training. Effective on-the-job training involves some structure and planning in the transfer of responsibility for task performance from the trainer to the novice. Assisting the trainer could involve helping develop up-to-date job analyses and offering strategies for teaching and evaluating job skills. "The subject of quartz occurrences in respirable coal mine dusts has been of increasing concern in recent years. The primary impetus for this concern has been provided by better measurement technology that has detected an increased number of mines with high quartz content in their respirable dusts. This paper presents the results of statistical analyses of quartz levels in multi-stage impactor samples from eighteen different coal mining sections located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Colorado and Ucah. The quartz and kaolinite determinations were then determined by combining impactor stage loadings to provide larger dust masses and applying the infrared spectrometry procedure outlined in Bureau of Mines/MSHA Method P7.The results will be presented using two categories of data collected during two separate phases of the research:(l) quartz concentration data from mines where quartz was known to be present in relatively high concentrations, and(2) quartz concentration data from mines chosen at random.The aspects of the occurrence of quartz in coal mine airborne dusts that will be reported include the size dependence of the quartz content, quartz variations with location in the mining section, and variations due to mining region. The results of the study show a strong pattern of size dependence of the quartz content in mines for which high quartz concentrations exist. A similar, though less pronounced, pattern exists in mines chosen at random. Quartz levels appear to have a varying relationship to section location and strong geographical patterns do not appear to exist in the data collected. Kaolinite content was found to be similar to that of quartz with patterns that are somewhat more consistent."

The results of the 1921 cooperative experiments conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of North Dakota at the University mining substation plent at Hebron , North Dakota , pointed clearly to certain definite dep ficiencies in the schemes hitherto developed for benefiting and utilizing lignite . First The apparatus used in the carbonizing process or used to produce carbonized lignite suitable for briquetting is too costly , that is , the cost per ton day of residue made is too high . Second - The depreciation of the carbonizing appara tus is too high . Third The carbonizing apparatus can not be operated intermittently without seriously damaging it and impairing its efficiency of performance . Fourth Too little attention has been given to the possibility of using at least a certain percentage of the carbonized lignite directly in suitable stoves and furnaces without briquetting or other treatment . Accordingly , consideration was given to the design of an oven that could be built at a mine without the importation of highly skilled and specially trained construction men , erected at a low first cost , readily kept in a state of repair , operated at a rela tively high capacity and put into operation or shut down at will without seriously damaging the brickwork . The need of such an oven was appreciated also by the University of North Dakota and a cooperative agreement was made to build and operate such an oven during the summer of 1921.

This report provides background information concerning a mine roof simulator currently being considered by the Bureau of Mines. The simulator is a mechanical device with the ability to simulate the forces and displacements associated with mine roof over an area 20 by 20 feet. The topics covered in the report include a conceptual description of the system, definition of system capabilities, discussion of how such capabilities were decided upon, description of available control modes, and a comparison between the mine roof simulator facility and similar facilities existing elsewhere.

Tests during pillar robbing, longwall operations, and other mining activities indicate that roof-floor convergence rates can be used as an indicator of imminent roof failure. A large number of electrical-mechanical devices have been built to measure convergence as well as convergence rates, but most obstruct mine traffic and are costly and time consuming to install. The Bureau of Mines has designed and is evaluating three types of small ultrasonic units to make these measurements. The new instruments provide nonobstructing measurements up to 35 ft away. The ultrasonic transducers can be attached to a roof bolt, placed in an unsupported area (by means of a toss basket), or handheld. Total distance to the target and rate of closure are displayed digitally to 0.001 ft and 0.01 ft/min, respectively.

The petroleum-refining industry established a. new record in fuel effieciency at refineries in 1936, when 597,000 B. t. u. of heat mere required to refine a barrel of crude oil, compared with an average of 615,000 B. t. u. in 1935 (see fig. 1). The principal factor in the 'indicated gain in fuel efficiency at refineries in 1936 was an increase in crude runs of 11 percent over 1935. A large part of the heat utilized at refineries is consumed elsewhere than under stills, or in ways quite independent of crude-oil distillation. In other words, as the operating ratio ( crude runs divided by capacity) for re- fineries increases toward tine maximum of 100 percent, the fuel requirements show progressively smaller increases and the average B. t. u. consumption per barrel of crude refined declines.

Roof bolting has been known for many years, although the practice had very limited application before 1948. Since then, bolting has been introduced as a systematic method of support in more than 700 coal mines and more than 200 noncoalmines and other underground openings in rock. By far the greatest number of bolts are used to support bedded roof. This is largely because of their use in coal mines, although roof bolts are used in mining bedded deposits of all kinds -potash (New Mexico), trona (Wyoming), and ores of iron (Alabama), lead (Missouri), uranium (Utah), lead-zinc (Utah), and copper (Michigan and Arizona). Thus, bolting has been successfully employed to reinforce bedded roof under a wide range of conditions despite the limited knowledge of the principles involved. This report develops the basic principles of bolting bedded roof based on elementary beam theory and on the results of tests intended to prove or disprove certain fundamental premises. Specifically, the objectives were to gain an understanding of the function of the bolts and the behavior of bolted roof and to establish standard bolt patterns. A combination of theoretical and experimental analysis was employed. The experimental method consisted of testing mine -roof models in a centrifuge. The models, the test procedure, and the model-prototype relations are described in a companion report (1)2/. A second companion report presents a method for designing systems of vertical bolts to reinforce bedded roof (2).

INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at its Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRC) is interested in the application of water mist sprays to extinguish diesel fie1 fires in underground mine diesel refueling areas. To this end experimental studies have been carried out on the extinguishment of diesel fuel fires at PRL's large enclosed fire suppression facility (FSP) at its Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Two sizes of shallow fuel pans (3x3 ft and 5x7 ft) contained the fires, and a number of commercial mist spray nozzles (at roof locations) and spray/fire locations were tested (52 fires in all). Visual observations of the pool fire extinguishment process by the overhead sprays with an infra-red sensitive videocom suggests that there are two distinct actions involved in extinguishment due to two different transport mechanisms by which the water droplets can enter the fire plume. First, is a direct injection of water droplets into the plume from overhead. This is believed to involve larger water drops and leads to an extinguishment time of several minutes. Second, is an indirect injection process involving small water drops which are entrained in the sideways air flow that feeds oxygen to the fire. This second process apparently leads to relatively fast quenching of the fire in less than 1 minute - a highly useful attribute for a fire protection system. This paper describes a relatively simple parametric model for the indirect water injection process, and defines the critical spray conditions for achieving rapid quenching of the pool fire. While the model is consistent with the pool fire data obtained to date, the PRL studies are continuing with more complex pool fire scenarios. It remains to be seen if this simple parametric approach applies to these future fire tests. THEORETICAL Critical Drop Size In the two-dimensional representation of figure I, an oil pool fire is considered to be a cone whose base is the vaporizing liquid oil surface having an area n?, above which exists a fire plume diffusion flame) of height, L. The rising plume induces a horizontal air flow into the side of the plume supplying the oxygen necessary for propagating gas phase combustion reactions. Water droplets suspended in the air around the plume will tend to follow the horizontal air flows into the plume. "INTRODUCTION The general program of the investigation of coal mine drainage which the Bureau of Mines is making includes, among its many phases and objectives, a study of the fate of the acid, content of drainage after it enters natural streams, and the effect of seasonal variations on the degree of contamination of streams. Opportunity for studying these under comparatively normal conditions and variations can readily be found, but there is only a chance opportunity for studying than under extreme conditions. The Bureau of Mines has been involved for several years in the development of processes for the recycling of solid wastes. As part of this program, a project was initiated to determine the feasibility of producing secondary pig iron from auto scrap. During the test period, 86,000 pounds of shredded auto scrap, along with petroleum coke and fluxing agents, was charged to a submerged-arc furnace of 1-ton nominal capacity. Eighty-eight thousand pounds of pig iron, with an average carbon content of 3.90 percent and an average copper content of 0.2 percent, was produced at an electrical consumption of 512 kW-hr per net ton. A cost estimate of the process showed that the pig, iron might be produced at a cost of $57 per ton.

Much has been written concerning accidents in coal mines; the fact that accidents cost the employer and employee money is generally well known, but how much accidents actually cost is vague, even in the minds of many operators. Unquestionably there are hazards in coal mining, but many of them can be eliminated; and from the prevention of accidents there can be realized a material saving in dollars and cents as well as in human suffering. In presenting the frequency, severity, and cost of accidents in some Tennessee coal mines, it is hoped that other mines in Tennessee, as well as mines in other States, will by a comparison of the data with their own ex¬ perience be enabled eventually to reduce the number of' their accidents.

The Bureau of Mines has successfully used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas to measure mine air flows under conditions where conventional methods have failed. SF6 was employed experimentally to measure accurately recirculation of return into intake air caused by leakage through an old stoped area, to check for potential leakage from an adjacent mine, to trace 10,000 cfm of "lost" air from an intake airway, and to measure transit air time through uranium mines. It proved useful as a means of accurately measuring airflow volumes in airways of large cross section and very low flow velocity, and in determining the recirculation resulting from underground cooling plants.
