Purpose The NIOSH Hearing Loss Simulator is a software training and communication tool for promoting hearing loss prevention. It allows a user or trainer to demonstrate the effects of noise exposure on hearing without experiencing an actual noise-induced hearing loss. Estimates of the effects of different levels of noise exposure are based on the American National Standard Determination of Occupational Noise Exposure and Estimation of Noise-Induced Hearing Impairment, otherwise known as ANSI S3.44. This standard specifies the predicted hearing loss for noise-exposed populations of individuals based on risk factors that include gender, age, sound levels (in A-weighted decibels or dBA), and years of exposure. Algorithms specified in the standard were derived from empirical studies of populations that had no exposure to loud noise and other populations that had experienced various levels and durations of noise exposure. This manual explains the major objectives that can be addressed with the simulator and training scenarios that can be applied to real-life, real-worker scenarios. The majority of this guide explains the simulator's functions in detail. Simulator users are encouraged to read this manual while learning how to run the software. [ ] Training Objectives The main objective of the Hearing Loss Simulator is to increase motivation for taking effective hearing prevention action by demonstrating simulated noise-induced hearing losses. [The Simulator can also help teach the following facts about hearing loss. Hearing loss is affected by noise levels. Hearing loss worsens as the noise exposure duration increases. Hearing loss can become permanent. Hearing loss makes it harder to hear what others say. Most hearing loss is not caused by age. Speech is made up of both low and high pitch sounds. Hearing loss due to noise makes it harder to hear high pitch sounds. Hearing loss due to noise has less of an effect on hearing low pitch sounds.]

"INTRODUCTION During the Bureau's extensive program of investigating possible domestic sources of manganese, an are-dressing study was conducted in its laboratories at Salt Lake City, Utah, on a sample of oxide manganese ore representative of vein material from the Ophir Hill mine at Ophir, Tooele County, Utah. The sample (obtained by blasting down and mixing a portion of the vein) was submitted by the Ophir Development Co. of Ophir, Utah. As the ore was too law in grade to be acceptable for direct production of ferromanganese, it was tested to determine its amenability to concentration by ore-dressing methods.At the beginning of the investigation of manganese-ore beneficiation in December 1940, the only product marketable to Metals Reserve Company was ferrograde manganese, grade B, the requirements for which follow: Mn, min., 48 percent; Fe, max., 7 percent; Si02, max., 10 percent; P, max., 0.18 percent; A1203, max., 6 percent; Zn, max., 1 percent.Later, the specifications were modified gradually. As of May 15, 1943, manganese products were acceptable if they contained over 35 percent manganese and less than 3 percent zinc and 1 percent phosphorus. Prices were based upon material containing 48 percent manganese, 6.0 percent iron, and 11 percent silica plus alumina. Premium were paid for manganese content in excess of, 48 percent and iron content below 6 percent, penalties being imposed upon products containing less than 48 percent manganese or more than 6 percent iron or more than 11 percent silica plus alumina. The specifications for commercial manganese further required that maximum particle size be 12 inches and that 75 percent of the product be coarser than 20-mesh. Therefore, fine material, such as table and flotation concentrates, had to be nodulized or sintered. In addition, carbonate manganese ores were not acceptable unless calcined."

In 1980, the Bureau of Mines surveyed a group of mine seals in Randolph County, WV, to evaluate their effectiveness for reducing toxic pollutants in mine water discharges. The survey focused on 11 block wet mine seals, but mine seals of several other types were also examined. The seals were installed in 1966 and 1967 in abandoned drift portals by the Federal Water Quality Administration (FWQA), a predecessor of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines and other Federal and State agencies, in a project known as Elkins Mine Drainage Pollution Control Demonstration Project. The seals were designed to prevent air from entering the mine portals while allowing mine water to flow out. It was believed that by preventing air from entering inactive or abandoned mines, the formation of toxic pollutants and acid mine drainage (AMD) could be reduced. Evaluation of the seals was based on water flow measurements, water analyses, and visual observations. The Bureau's 1980 data were compared with past data collected by the EPA. Several leaks and failures were observed in the clay seals, as evidenced by apparent blowouts and the absence of vegetation where the mine water surfaced. Analyses of the 1980 data indicated some improvement in the quality of water discharged from many of the wet air seals.

Chlorination of sulfide minerals and several prepared metal sulfides was studied. The resulting data were analyzed with respect to kinetics of the reactions and application to nonpolluting methods of winning metals from sulfide ores. Sulfides of iron, copper-iron, nickel, lead, zinc, silver, bismuth, arsenic, rhenium, molybdenum, and tungsten were investigated at temperatures up to 600° C. Copper-iron, lead, and zinc sulfides showed at least some product-controlled (parabolic) kinetics at the lower temperatures within the temperature ranges studied, but only nickel and silver sulfides had chlorination rates controlled by parabolic reaction kinetics in the commercially important temperature range of 450° to 600° C.

A U.S. Bureau of Mines designed and fabricated in-seam tester (1ST), retrofitted with a dust shroud, was used to establish a respirable dust index (RDI) and to determine cutting forces from a variety of bit types in four coal mines and a salt mine. Results from cutting tests at four coal mines showed that radial bits required the lowest cutting force and the least specific energy. Generally, for each conical bit the RDI and cutting force increased when the included bit tip angles increased from 70° to 90°. During field tests it was not possible to measure the total quantity of respirable dust produced by each cut; therefore, attempts were made to determine the amount of dust that became airborne from each test cut. The test results show that the quantity of airborne respirable dust is very erratic and cannot be related to bit type. Two statistical methods were employed to analyze RDI, but no correlation was found between the RDI and bit type. Despite scatter in test results for RDI, significant difference was found in RDI generated in four coal seams. In general, RDI increased with the increased cutting force for each coal seam from mine 1 through mine 4.

[The Bureau of Mines well-bore caliper was designed to provide an instrument that could be operated through 2-inch tubing, which 'a used particularly in many input wells on water-flooding projects of eastern, Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma. It should find wide application elsewhere under many other conditions where it has not been possible previously to make caliper logs with the larger probes used on other instruments. The caliper has three additional advantages over other instruments of this type: (1) It measures 4 radii (up to 18 inches) 90° apart with an accuracy of ± 1/4 inch; (2) the measuring arms can be opened and closed at will by remote control; and (3) it is run and operated on a single-conductor, armored electric cable (Amergraph, type 1-H-0). The caliper probe is 1-3/4 inches in diameter and approximately 6 feet in length. The electrical control and measuring circuits are encased in a stainless-steel tubular case. Measuring arms, made of 5/16-inch aluminum tubing, are attached near the lower end of the instrument. Distances the arms are extended are indicated t the surface by a meter calibrated to read directly in inches. Depths at which the radii measurements are taken are indicated by a wireline depth indicator on the cable-reeling. The instrument is not affected by pressure or temperature, it can be run open hole or under pressure through a lubricator. This paper describes and illustrates the instrument and outlines the operating procedures. A bibliography at the end of the report gives references to articles and patents on the development and use of other well-bore calipers.]

This paper, describing the operations of the Louisville Cement Co. in quarrying limestone for the manufacture of quicklime, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on stone quarries throughout the United States. Those papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 provides few specifics to assist the non-fuel mining and mineral processing industries of the United States in achieving pollution prevention (P2) compliance. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) recognizes the absence of specific information to reduce pollution impacts from mining and mineral processing of hardrock and industrial minerals. Therefore, the USBM has prepared this publication to help reduce or eliminate environmental pollution and to assure the viability of these segments of the domestic mining industry. This report includes worksheets designed to help operators of mining and milling facilities to establish a P2 program. The report can also be used by citizen and environmental groups, State and local governments, and academia to gain an understanding of P2 as it relates to mining and mineral processing.

Before listing the laboratories and the work performed there, it is proper to make clear what is done and what is not done by Federal bureaus, States, and Territories, as well as by Canada and Mexico. FEDERAL Bureau of Mines. - The Bureau of Mines does not make assays, analyses, or tests for individuals or firms unless they be incidental to investiga¬tions that are of possible benefit to the entire mineral industry. All significant results obtained in this way are made public through published reports. Any mineral sample sent to this Bureau for simple identification will be subjected to a cursory examination.

For a study such as this, which summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the numerous U.S. Bureau of Mines country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in the country and regional reports that comprise the five other sections of 1991 Minerals Yearbook-International Review, it is clearly impossible to cite all sources of information used in its presentation, but some recognition is due. Generally speaking, this study and its related detailed studies on countries and areas would be much more difficult, if not impossible, without the efforts of the personnel of national mining and geological agencies throughout the world. Information that they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or those of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations on which this work rests. Thus, appreciation is expressed to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies.

The fundamental properties of dielectric separation were studied to provide insight into the design and operating characteristics of a dielectric separator. Force equations on mineral particles were derived and evaluated experimentally. Responses to variations in the electrical voltage and frequency, feed rate, particle size, dielectric fluid, and dielectric constant were tested theoretically and experimentally, using a 5-cm-diam dielectric separator. High-dielectric mineral recovery was proportional to the calculated effective dielectric force volume (EDFV) that surrounded each drum-electrode wire. Electrode spacing was the most sensitive design parameter; spacing of less than 0.4 cm was required for a good separation. Dielectric separation was effective for separating minerals with dielectric constants that differed by approximately 2 or more.

The number of completed petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline in 1937 , but the total capacity to process crude oil continued to increase . These facts were ascertained in the Bureau's annual canvass of refinery capacity as of January 1 , 1938 . Several important changes were made in the census questionnaire for January 1 , 1938 . First , the basis of reckoning cracking capacity was changed from cracking stock charged to cracked gasoline produced . Although this is a definite improvement , in that it is no longer necessary to consider the yield , it is unfortunate that the data for January 1 , 1938 cannot be compared with cracking - capacity statistics since 1925. Other changes or additions included separating capacity at operating plants into that actually operating and that closed down ; collecting data on capacity added or retired during the previous year ; breaking down idle capacity according to physical status ; and separating new capacity into that built for replacement and that built to augment existing capacity . Prior to January 1 , 1938 , the total capacity of an operating plant was listed as " operating " even though some stills might have been closed down ; furthermore , the only capacity reported as being under construction was that of new plants that were being built on January 1. To make the statistics clear , the totals for the United States as of January 1 , 1938 , are given on both the old and the new bases . On January 1 , 1938 , there were 551 completed plants compared with 572 the previous year . Ten new plants were under construction on that date compared with 11 the year before . The greatest number of completed plants recorded was 632 on January 1 , 1936 ; since then , competitive conditions , particularly in the East Texas field , have been instrumental in reducing the number of small independent plants . The total crude- oil capacity of the completed refineries on January 1 , 1938 , was 4,351,151 barrels , of which 3,970 , 196 barrels ( 91 percent ) represented the capacity in actual operation and 380,955 barrels ( 9 percent ) was shut down . The " shut -down " capacity ( 199,875 barrels on the old basis ) was the lowest since pre- depression days , chiefly because numerous idle East Texas plants were removed from the list . The new method of compiling the statistics sheds considerable light on excess crudeoil capacity , which has been the subject of considerable speculation in recent years . The highest daily average crude runs to stills reached in this country was about 3,460,000 barrels in September 1937. At that time , the total crude - oil capacity was about 3,925,000 barrels . Much has been written and said concerning tables of permissible or maximum allowable concentrations of various toxic substances in air, but not enough attention has been given to their limitations and how to use them intelligently . There is a tendency to place too much reliance on figures , with little or no consideration of their real meaning . The repeated publication of a figure often adds significance to it far beyond that intended by the original author or publisher . How are these figures referred to as "maximum allowable concentrations " established? What is their real meaning? To answer these questions it is necessary first to define maximum allowable concentration . The usual definition is somewhat as follows : "The average concentration to which an industrial worker can be exposed for 8- hours daily for an indefinite period without injury or occupational disease . This definition is made up of the following items : ( 1 ) Average concentration, ( 2 ) 8 - hour day , ( 3 ) indefinite exposure period , and ( 4 ) lack of injury or occupational disease . There is some controversy regarding item ( 1 ) , items ( 2 ) and ( 3 ) are usually though not invariably accepted , and there is definite disagreement regarding the interpretation of item ( 4 ) . . To reach a more satisfactory interpretation of maximum allowable concentration , attention is directed to ( 1 ) the development of tables of maximum allowable concentrations , ( 2 ) criteria on which limits are based , and (3 ) methods used to obtain data on which limits are based .

OUTPUT of carbon black in 1959 increased in all producing States except New Mexico. The national increase was 20 percent. Domestic sales and exports increased 22 percent and 16 percent, respectively, resulting in a 21 percent gain in sales. Sales to the rubber industry, which purchased 95 percent of the domestic output of carbon black, increased 23 percent. Sales to all other major consumers also increased. This investigation was undertaken to assess the feasibility of processing an extensive deposit of iron ore near Palisades, Eureka County, Nev., previously penalized for high phosphorus content. The experiments described indicate a satisfactory accomplishment of objective. Chemical treatment will permit a high-phosphorus iron ore to be used. Leaching with acid solution effectively lowers the phosphorus content with a [gligible] loss of iron. The use of hydrochloric acid is preferred because [ ] does not contaminate the ore and the cost is lower. Minus-1/2-inch ore was satisfactorily leached in 24 hours, minus-1/4-inch ore, in 8 hours, and minus-10-mesh ore, in 3 hours. About 40 pounds of acid per ton of ore was consumed in each instance.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the performance of portable power cables under transient conditions. This research had a twofold purpose: (1) to define the thermal characteristics of electrically overloaded trailing cables, and (2) to conceptualize electrical protection for cables that allows maximum cable efficiency without diminishing electrical safety in underground mines. Several tasks were undertaken in support of these goals during the 3-year research effort. Overload tests ranging from 2 to 12 times rated ampacity were conducted in the Bureau's Mine Electrical Laboratory. Two thermal models of energized type G-GC trailing cables were constructed, one based on thermodynamic theory and the other using empirical data from previous Bureau load tests. The empirical model was then incorporated into an interactive computer program that can assist designers and approvers of mining machines in selecting the appropriate size trailing cable. This program can be the basis for a cable protection system that ensures that cables are not the source of fires, ignitions, burns, or explosions underground.

Operation of the Bureau of Mines raw refuse continuous separation pilot plant is described, including modifications made to plant equipment for improved performance. Products recovered from refuse, many of which have been evaluated by other laboratories and private firms, are discussed. Sampling procedures used in the pilot plant and detailed data obtained from processing refuse from 13 municipalities are presented in appendixes. Fuel evaluations made on combustible fractions of refuse from the various municipalities are also presented. Information and data obtained at the pilot plant have been used to assist many municipalities in solving their urban refuse problems.

"A theoretical technique has been developed and verified experimentally for determining the aerodynamic diameter of irregular shaped particles. The aerodynamic diameter of a particle is a very important parameter for determining where that particle deposits in the respiratory tract. Many instruments, such as impactors and cyclones, will determine the aerodynamic size distributions of aerosol particles but few analyze the particles individually. The theoretical approach of our technique is to solve, by use of high speed computers, the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations to obtain the flow field around an irregular shaped particle of any contour. The computer program will then determine the drag on the particle, and thus the aerodynamic diameter of the particle can be calculated. The experimental approach has been to pass the particles through a centrifuge and collect the particles upon a collection foil. The position of a particle on the foil is an indication of its aerodynamic diameter. These particles were then shadowed in two orthogonal directions and inspected under an scanning electron microscope (SEM). The top view of the particle in the SEM plus the views of the two orthogonal shadows allows one to determine the three-dimensional shape of the particle. Studies have been performed on silica, coal and talc particles with aerodynamic diameters in the 1 to 4 µm size range. The three-dimensional shape, as is determined from SEM analysis, was used in the theoretical computer program and the results compared. It was found that in most cases the agreement between the experimentally and theoretically determined aerodynamic diameters was within 5%. INTRODCJCTIONThe equivalent aerodynamic diameter (EAD) of a particle, defined as the diameter of a unit density sphere with the same falling speed as the particle in question, is an important size measurement of the particle. This is especially true when attempting to predict where particles may deposit in the respirator tract. Therefore, EAD is an important parameter when considering respiratory diseases caused by particles, such as coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP).Many instruments will measure the EAD size distribution of the aerosol particles, but few analyze the particles individually. Impactors, cyclones and virtual impactors normally collect particles upon substrates or filters which are · then analyzed gravimetrically to determine the mass concentration of the particles in that size classification. The EAD of particles can be measured on an individual basis with centrifuges, inertial spectrometers and the TSI Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS). Centrifuges are most ideally applicable for studying individual particles as the particles are deposited, on long removable foils, at locations dependent upon their EAD."

The STATE MINERAL SUMMARIES publication provides estimated data and summaries of mineral activities at the State level for 1990. Most of the estimates are based on nine months data. These summaries have been prepared in cooperation with State geological surveys or related agencies. Individual State summaries are published separately as State Mineral Industry Surveys and copies can be obtained from the appropriate State Activities field office.
