"INTRODUCTION The purpose of this circular is to correlate the information obtained during personal investigations at the sites of four rock tunnels in the process of construction and information obtained from the records and personal views of the constructors of two other tunnels that were not visited during the, excavation phase of construction and to present this information for the benefit of those who contemplate future construction of rock tunnels.Modern mechanized coal mining requires better, safer, properly alined haulageways and beltways; consequently, better understanding of tunneling methods by coal-mining men will be necessary. The possibility of future high-speed haulage systems utilizing rock tunnels in the more solid rock strata above or below the coal beds must not be discounted. In the past, tunnels have been driven for use in draining and unwatering inundated coal mines. At present, the need for such tunnels is very evident in some parts of the coal-mining regions, notably in the Pennsylvania anthracite fields, and studies along these lines are in progress. The average coal-mining man has little time or opportunity to visit tunnels while they are being exca-vated; therefore, it is hoped that this information will assist him in constructing tunnels safely if he is required to do so in the future.The tunnels described herein differ in size, shape, usage, and, in many instances, in their geological aspects. Full-face, heading and bench, and pilot-tunnel, and enlargement methods of excavation were utilized.The roof-support methods show diverse designs and materials of construction to suit each purpose and condition. The superiority of steel roof support over wood is demonstrated beyond doubt and is shown clearly in the photographs included in this circular.The illustrations (photographs taken by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the U. S. Corps of Engineers, and others) show many of the necessary steps taken during the excavation and the erection of roof support in tunnels under construction."

Slope failure accidents were responsible for about 12% of U.S. surface mine fatalities between 1995 and 2003. Small surface movements on a mine highwall may be precursors of failure that, if detected, could provide sufficient warning to enable workers and machinery to be withdrawn to safety. Radar interferometry offers the necessary precision to detect these movements. Radar has some advantages over other methods in its ability to cover large surface areas for true two-dimensional monitoring day and night under almost any weather condition. Radar’s active transmit/receive mode of operation provides for more direct sampling than do passive optical methods that depend on solar illumination. Improvements in microprocessor speeds and capacities have led to the development of a number of small, portable, ground-based systems; such systems are now being deployed at several locations around the world. As part of an ongoing study of monitoring technologies, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Brigham Young University, Provo, UT, cooperated to assess the feasibility of using interferometric radar to monitor mine slope stability. Field tests of a device incorporating prototype equipment were successful in that small, centimeter-scale displacements on rock slopes were detected.

Frequencies of haulage-related accidents in metal and nonmetal surface mines for the years 1988 through 1990 were investigated and compared with those of non-haulage-related accidents. This study was part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines program to improve mining haulage safety. Data were obtained through the U.S. Bureau of Mines Accident Data Analysis (ADA) program. The chi-square test was used to compare frequencies of haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents for each of the following variables: degree of injury, age, total number of years of mining experience, and shift time. Significance was determined for degree of injury between haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents. Age of injured did not vary significantly between haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents, but total number of years of mining experience was found to be significant. Shift time for the accident proved to vary significantly between haulage-and non-haulage-related accidents. Events causing injury for haulage-related accidents were tabulated, and the most frequent determinants of haulage-related accidents were identified. Accident descriptions for both fatalities and permanent disabilities were studied, and the primary causes of these accidents were identified. These findings suggest that haulage-related jobs are among the most dangerous when considering accidents experienced by all workers in the metal and nonmetal surface mining work force.

Measurements of surface magnetic field noise were made at various locations over the Geneva Coal Mine near Price, Utah, on June 12, 1973. The locations selected were on the surface over emergency locator beacons underground at depths between 350 meters (1150 ft .) and 488 meters (1600 ft .) . The surface terrain where these measurements were made was mountainous, and access was difficult. There were no power lines within several miles, and the weather was clear; therefore, the magnetic noise levels were about as low as will normally occur. Results of measurements of distant sferics indicate rather sharp cutoff frequencies below which broad- band, impulsive noise is attenuated. The mechanism of propagation for this noise above the daytime cutoff frequency of 3500 Hz and the nighttime cutoff frequency of 1700 Hz is deduced to be a waveguide formed by the D or E layers of ionosphere as an upper plane and the earth as a lower plane. The measurement systems used are similar to those used earlier. The technique is to record broadband, analog signals, digitize the data, and use a fast- Fourier transform to obtain spectral plots. This tech- nique is novel in that it can measure simultaneously all magnetic field energy within a limited portion of the spectrum for a limited time, and, after processing, reproduce the events occurring in that time interval in great detail .

Coal, fly ash, and flue gas samples were analyzed for mercury (Hg) by double gold amalgamation-flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The purpose of the study was to elucidate the fate of the trace mercury in the coal when the coal is burned. Samples were collected from a bench-scale 100-g/hr combustor, a 500-lb/hr combustor, and three coal-burning powerplants. In all cases mercury was found in the fly ash. The amounts ranged from about 9 to about 70 percent of the mercury in the coal that was burned.

"Researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the mechanics of respirable size fragment formation in coal. The project is based on the premise that a thorough understanding of the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation may lead to techniques for reduction and better control of coal dust problems in mines. Presently, it is believed that the mode of fracture propagation which can range from pure tensile to pure shear or any mixed mode in between and the loading or displacement rate can influence the amount of respirable size fragments that are generated on new fracture surfaces during the fracture propagation process The essence of any coal cutting process is one of mixed mode fracture propagation. To study the crack propagation process, a unique mixed mode testing rig was designed and fabricated. This rig is capable of applying loads to a prenotched test specimen that range from pure Mode I (tensile mode) to nearly pure Mode II (shear mode) or many mixed mode loading combinations. It is also possible to apply different loading or displacement rates to the test specimen. With this rig, it is possible to create new fracture surfaces via the different fracture modes and under various loading conditions.These new fracture surfaces are examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to characterize the amount of structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that occurs during the fracture process. Initial observations suggest that the amount of fine fragment formation and the new fracture surface appearance is related to the fracture initiation conditions, particularly the fracture mode and the loading rate. Mode II loading and higher loading rates seem to generate more structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that Mode 1 loading at slower rates.With the mixed mode test rig, the mechanics of fracture initiation for a single crack can be controlled to better understand its influence on respirable size fragment formation. Such understanding may lead to methods which characterize the tendency of specific coal seams to produce undesirable fine fragments during the fracture process, or it may lead to rational recommendations and design guidelines or coal mining machines which inherently produce less dust.IntroductionAs part of a larger effort to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung) in coal miners, researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal. This project is part of a com¬prehensive research effort within the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust which is jointly administered by The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University.The principal source of the coal dust in underground mining is the cutting operation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and various European research organizations have conducted investigations into the mechanics of coal cutting for many years. These studies of airborne respirable dust (ARD) formation have concentrated on empirical studies of the various cutting parameters and their effect on ARD for¬mation. The parameters study include depth of cut, cutting speed and bit spacing.(1,2) Other studies investigated the effect of symmetric and asymmetric bit wear and various bit geometries and designs (3-5) Roepke(6) summarized the principals of proper coal cutting to minimize dust formation by recommending to ""cut at maximum depth (maximum advance rate) at all times, at minimum RPM, with the fewest possible bits, having the lowest possible included tip angle."" The mode of propagation of explosions through narrow passages is important for understanding flameproofed equipment employed in mines. Narrow channels have been used in this investigation that connected between a small explosion chamber and a large chamber containing fuel-air mixture. The oxygen index of the mixture in the small chamber was determined which caused an explosion in the outer chamber. Preliminary measurements have already been given in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5457 and suggested that) flames do not pass through narrow channels. The hot, burned gases from the explosion in the small chamber, however, are able to ignite the mixture in the large chamber by a process of hot-gas ignition. Systematic measurements are reported in the present paper that cover the influence of channel length and diameter and the properties of the gas mixtures in the large chamber on the transmission of explosions. The influence of such properties as quenching diameter and flame temperature is also discussed. This paper concludes the work on this problem and presents a theory that describes in detail parameters that influence transmission of explosions through narrow channels. An alkaline leaching procedure for recovering uranium from a submarginal 0.1 percent Ug Og calcareous carnotite ore from the Shiprock , N. Mex . , area was investigated . A recovery of 72 percent of the uranium was attained in a preliminary test embodying the commonly accepted practice of ( 1 ) alkaline leaching at 90° C , ( 2 ) multiple stage filtration and washing for recovery of a clear pregnant solution , and ( 3 ) caustic precipitation of uranium as sodium diuranate , with recycle of the barren solution to the leaching and washing circuits . Ion exchange resins were used in a second , less orthodox test that comprised ( 1 ) sodium carbonate leaching of minus 10- mesh ore at 90 ° C to dissolve the uranium , ( 2 ) filtration to recover the leaching reagent for reuse , (3 ) recovery of the uranium- bearing solution in the filter cake as a pregnant slime slurry by repulping of the filter cake followed by a sand- slime separation and countercurrent decantation (CCD ) washing for rejection of the sand fraction , (4 ) recovery of the dissolved uranium from the pregnant slime slurry by resin- in- pulp (RIP ) , ( 5 ) elution of the uranium from the resin with a solution of ammonium chloride acidified with hydrochloric acid , and (6 ) precipitation of the uranium with ammonia gas . About 83 percent of the uranium was extracted from the ore and 95.5 percent of the dissolved uranium recovered by ion exchange . Improved laboratory results were obtained using the RIP process , but larger scale tests would be necessary for economic evaluation of the two processes .

The National Safety Competition , a safety contest conducted annually by the Bureau of Mines , United States Department of the Interior , to promote safety at mines and quarries , has just resulted in the award of safety trophies , known as the " Sentinels of Safety" , for 1939. Awards were made to a bituminous- coal mine in Wyoming , an anthracite mine in Pennsylvania , a metal mine in Michigan , and a nonmetallic -mineral mine in Alabama ( all being underground mines ) and to anopen-cut mine in Minnesota and a stone quarry in Michigan. The awards signify that the recipients won first place in their respective groups in an accident-prevention contest by operating during 1939 with the smallest loss of time in proportion to the total number of man-hours worked at the mine or quarry . Each of the trophy-winning companies for 1939 operated his property without a disabling injury to an employee , except at the anthracite mine , whose record , while not free of accidents , was better than that of any other mine in the anthracite group . The " Sentinels of Safety" trophy is a bronze statue of a mother and infant welcoming the father safely home after his day's work in the mine . Six trophies were provided by THE EXPLOSIVES ENGINEER magazine to be awarded annually by the Bureau of Mines . These trophies remain in the custody of the mining companies for 1 year , after which the trophies are transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest . A replica of the trophy is provided for permanent retention by the company surrendering the bronze trophy . In addition to the award of the safety trophies for 1939 , each man employed at a winning mine or quarry receives from the Bureau of Mines a certificate of honor in recognition of his part in helping his company to win the trophy . Companies ranking second , third , fourth , or fifth in their respective groups , and all mines and quarries whose records were free of disabling ( losttime) injuries and showed at least 30,000 man-hours worked during the contest year were awarded certificates of honorable mention . Mines and quarries that won the " Sentinels of Safety" trophies for 1939 and those that were awarded certificates of honorable mention are indicated in the following paragraphs .

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report summarizes a field demonstration of pneumatic backfilling technologies conducted at the abandoned Hillside Coal and Iron Slope in Vandling, P A. Researchers demonstrated two pneumatic backfilling technologies recently developed under the USBM's Abandoned Mine Reclamation Research Program, the Pneumatic Pipefeeder and the High-Efficiency Ejector. Both systems had previously been evaluated at the USBM's subsidence abatement investigation laboratory near Fairchance, P A. The objective of the demonstration was to fill 100% of the abandoned tunnel with backfill stone to prevent further subsidence. The Pneumatic Pipefeeder was used for 21 days, at a rate of 63 to 124 t/ d (69 to 136 st/d), to fill 88% of the tunnel. The High-Efficiency Ejector was used for 2 days, at a rate of 125 to 132 t/d (138 to 146 st/d) to fill the remaining 12% of the tunnel. The backfill placed by both systems was tightly compacted. The major problem encountered was wear on the polyethylene pipeline from the abrasion of the high-velocity backfill. The use of heavier steel pipe minimized the problem. A cost analysis for the entire project is given.

The San Manuel is a deposit of low-grade disseminated copper ore. It was brought to the attention of the government in October 1942 through an application to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation for a development loan, supported by a report by Henry W. Nichols. Nichols' sampling of two outcrops containing copper silicate and his geologic map indicated that a minable body of copper ore might be developed. The Federal Geological Survey was requested to examine the property. The Survey mapped the geology in March 1943 and cut a few check samples, which substantially confirmed Nichols' sampling of the outcrops and a few shallow workings. The geologists of the Survey recommended some test drilling by the Bureau of Mines. The property was examined by the author and Wm. D. Hughes, associate engineer of the Bureau of Mines on March 22 and 26, 1943, and a preliminary drilling campaign was recommended. Five shallow churn-drill holes totaling 1,480 feet were put down under the supervision of Chas. A. Kumke, one of the Bureau's engineers, from November 23, 1943, to January 13, 1944. This work indicated that the deposit extended deeper than the 350-foot depth attained in the deepest hole and might have very considerable areal extent. Additional funds were allotted, and the drilling contract was extended twice to a final maximum of 17,000 feet with 2,000 feet maximum depth of hole. Drilling was continued by the Bureau of Mines until February 2, 1945, when 15,844 feet of hole had been drilled. The Magna Copper Co. took options on this and adjoining property in September 1944 and commenced drilling with two machines. It also engaged the two contract drills used by the Bureau after it stopped drilling. It exercised its options in August 1945 and organized the San Manuel Copper Corp. to operate the property. That company is continuing to explore the ore body with six churn drills. Thomas Lyon took options early in 1945 on holdings adjoining the San Manuel property on the east and is operating two churn drills. Exploration up to the completion of the last holes started by the Bureau of Mines indicated a block of ore 3,100 feet long, 400 to 800 feet wide, and 500 to 900 feet thick, and averaging about 0.8 percent copper. Subsequent drilling showed that the ore body extends considerably beyond this block. The axis of the ore body strikes about N. 61° E. Copper minerals are disseminated in hydrothermally altered quartz monzonite and monzonite porphyry. Ore outcrops in two small areas over the northeast part of the block. Elsewhere the copper-bearing rocks are capped by Gila conglomerate, which thickens toward the west and south. Drilling showed that the ore is in a thick, tabular body with a steep dip to the south. The ore body lies near the surface in the northeastern part of the block. The south side of the block is much farther below the surface than the north side. There the upper part of the copper-bearing rocks is lightly mineralized, so that the hanging wall of minable ore lies deeper than the base of the conglomerate cap, which thickens southward.

The equilibrium compositions of product gases for mixtures of air with methane, propane, or ethylene at and around flame temperatures are reported. For each hydrocarbon, compositions are given for five fuel-to-air ratios--two lean, two rich, and one stoichiometric--at five pressures, from 1 to 20 atmospheres, and at an ambient temperature of 25° C.

A material balance equation was derived for calculating (1) the initial oil volume and (2) the relationship of average reservoir pressure to net gas in storage in reservoirs used for natural gas storage operations. The equation is also applicable to secondary-recovery operations where reservoirs are completely repressured and gas cycled. Using this equation minimized two probable sources of appreciable error in conventional material balance calculations: inaccurate measuring of and accounting for produced gas, and differences between true reservoir pressure and average reservoir pressures as derived from bottom-hole pressure measurements. A new procedure is presented for calculating water encroachment. By solving the conventional material balance equation and the derived equation for gas storage simultaneously, the values for initial oil in place and net water encroachment can both be determined.

"In the cyanidation of silver ore, the need of oxygen is well recognized. Various methods have been introduced for supplying the oxygen. In usual practice, air is the source of oxygen and the methods of application are mechanical.This article gives the results of touts made to show the rate of dissolution of silver from each of the common silver minerals in cyanide solution, under conditions similar to those used in the practical recovery of silver from its ores. The effect of oxygen in aiding the dissolution of the silver from each mineral is also shown by a comparison of the methods of supplying the oxygen. Oxidation by preliminary roasting (500°C.) of each mineral sample gives the maximum extraction of the silver by treatment with cyanide.Each silver mineral5 used in these experiments was as pure as could be obtained from the mineral dealer. In their natural occurrence, silver minerals are not usually free from mineral impurities. They are usually closely associated with other minerals often forming, a complex mixture. The form of crystallization, the proportions, and properties of the diluent that incases or has been dispersed with the silver mineral may decidedly affect the dissolution rate of the silver from each mineral. While the following results should aid in the cyanidation of silver ores, each ore should be studied from the basis of the form and condition of the silver that is to be recovered.All the tests reported in this article were made on synthetic samples, prepared by mixing the particular silver mineral with clean sea sand. Each mineral was ground in an agate mortar to pass 100-mesh before mixing with the sand which had previously been ground in a porcelain pebble mill to 100-mesh. Such proportions of each mineral and the sand were used as to give a head assay of approximately 20 ounces of silver per ton to the synthetic sample.Agitation was carried on in stoppered bottles approximately one-third full of pulp, method apparently supplied all the atmospheric oxygen that would be taken up by the solution under usual conditions, because tests conducted in open bottles did not show increased recovery,"

During studies of the various methods for determining and specifying the factors that indicate whether a particular coke is better or worse than other cokes for metallurgical uses, questions arose as to the precision of screen-analysis tests on coke. Although the usual index of precision, the standard deviation of the test result, gives a measure of the precision of these data, the experimental determination of the standard deviation for a particular set of conditions requires tests on a large number of duplicate samples. Because this procedure necessaily involves a great deal of labor, an equation for predicting standard deviations from theoretical considerations has been developed. Results predicted with this equation agree satisfactorily with the experimental values and are applicable to tests on coal, coke, gravel, and other bulk materials.

"It is well known that the lost coal left in the ground in mining, under such conditions that recovery is practically impossible, constitutes a large proportion of the coal in the beds worked. A recent estimate, in a paper on ""The World's Fuel Supply"" presented by Prof. L. P. Breckinridge, of Yale University, before the Annual Meeting of the. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, places the average loss in bituminous coal mining as one-third left in the ground.The bald statement that there is a loss of one ton of coal for every two recovered may seem to those not familiar with coal mining to imply inexcusable and wanton waste. Perhaps a better way of expression is in terms of total recovery rather than in terms of losses. Many mine superintendents and mine owners will readily concede that their total recovery may be only 60 to 75 per cent, but to state that they are wasting 25 to 40 per cent arouses antagonism. The suggestion is of willful waste, whereas the majority of the operators try to the best of their ability to get a high recovery under the adverse and complex conditions that confront them. These involve natural, commercial, and labor conditions, and the requirement in many cases of boundary pillars under railroads and buildings, which may be called for in the deed or lease, or in the absence of specific exemption in the deed or lease, the common law requirement that a surface owner is entitled to the support of the surface."

As part of a general plan for control and economic utilization of the waters of the Missouri River Basin as well as development of its inherent power resources, the Corps of Engineers of the United States Army has under construction a rolled earth dam near the site of old Fort Randall in South Dakota. The dam is in Charles Mix and Gregory Counties on the Missouri River at a point about 922 miles above its mouth. It is approximately 125 air-line miles southeast of Pierre and 55 miles southwest of Mitchell, S. Dak. The storage reservoir to be formed by the dam will extend upstream for 150 miles and, at maximum operating pool level, will cover an area of some 107,000 acres. It will have a storage capacity of 6.2 million acre feat.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a continuation of statistics pertaining to distribution of petroleum reservoirs (or fields), wells, and production by depth and producing rate classification in the United States. These statistics show the change that has occurred since results of a similar study were published by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. Data are presented in tabular form by State for the 18 principal oil-producing States and by subdivision for the two larges t oil-producing States, Texas and Louisiana, Tabular summations and graphical illustrations are presented for the Nation. The data are classified by 4-barrel-of-oil-per-day rate increments up to 36 barrels and one increment of greater than 36 barrels of oil per day and by 2,000-foot depth increments up to 8,000 feet and one depth increment of greater than 8,000 feet. The overall average producing rates for States and the Nation have been published for many years; although such rates are useful, they are very general descriptions of producibility. A breakdown of production, wells, and reservoirs by various depths and rates and by State or by State subdivision provides a more detailed description of producibility.

The western Mesabi range nonmagnetic taconites containing about 34 percent Fe were evaluated by the Bureau of Mines in a 900-pound-per-hour pilot plant employing a selective flocculation-desliming-cationic flotation technique. The flotation step was a reverse flotation process and involved the flotation of the gangue minerals. The objective of the research was to increase the availability of domestic raw materials for the iron and steel industry. The beneficiated ores yielded concentrates containing 62 to 64 percent Fe and less than 5.5 percent Si02 with accompanying iron recoveries that averaged about 75 percent. Comparable flotation results were obtained with either fresh or 80 to 90 percent reclaimed water. Recycled waters having turbidities as high as 5,000 ppm Si02 did not affect the flotation process. Reclaimed waters containing residual calcium contents of less than 10 ppm gave better flotation concentrates than those containing 15 ppm.
