The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has in progress a study or the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines. A major problem of this study is to compare the deliveries calculated from the gas pipe-line flow formulas commonly used, with the metered deliveries from pipe lines in operation. In order to obtain such comparisons a series of tests has bean made on 25 operating pipe lines in Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, and California ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Study of the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines was made under the general supervision of H. IN 1944 the Congress passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act that authorized the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Federal Bureau of Mines, to conduct basic research and construct and operate demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shale, and other substances. As a basis for the oil shale investigations to be undertaken in this country, the progress of foreign countries in developing and using oil shale as a source of liquid fuels was studied by the technical missions of the Federal Bureau of Mines. Oil shale mines, retorting plants, and refineries were visited; geological information on the nature and occurrence of the foreign oil shales was obtained; and samples of the oil shales were collected where possible. Samples collected by these missions or acquired by other means came from Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Manchuria (China) , New Zealand, Scot-land, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, and Union of South Africa. These countries represent a large part of the locations where oil shale developments have taken place. The major omissions are the Estonian, German, and Russian developments.

The purpose of this bulletin is to describe the methods of constructing and operating representative types of plants in the United States used for removing the light hydrocarbons from petroleum by continuous distillation, such plants being commonly known in the trade as topping or skimming plants. In the discussion of each plant an endeavor has been made to arrange the text similarly in order to facilitate comparison and to emphasize the important features. The various experimental values for the specific and the latent heats of the oils apply approximately to the oil treated. Careful experiments with each oil and its commercial fractions were not justifiable in view of the purpose of this report. It is regretted that limitations for recording data at the different plants made impossible the determination of a heat balance for each, which would have provided an equitable method of comparing efficiencies. The writer has confined himself to a comparison of the relative efficiencies of the distilling apparatus alone by the following method: Effi . f till d tt" _ Heat theoretically required. ciency 0 SIS an se mgs - Heat content of fuel consumed. The plants described are all in California where the topping industry has had its growth accentuated by the character and the use of the oil handled. The scarcity of suitable coal made the adoption of other fuel necessary, and the heavy oil of California supplied the need. To raise the flash point and to dehydrate this oil, various plants have been developed. However, the topping industry is represented in other fields; the Roxana Petroleum Co. of Cushing, Okla., and the Warner-Quinlan Asphalt Co. of New Jersey, are operating Trumble plants, and Texas and Oklahoma operators have been experimenting with different pipe retorts for continuous running. In addition to the reasons for topping cited above, in California topping has other purposes which give the plants practically a universal field in the oil industry. These additional purposes are (1) to remove the lighter constituents of the oil prior to storage for a long period, thus reducing the losses from evaporation, (2) to dehydrate and clean the oil, and (3) in conjunction with a complete refinery, to remove the lighter fractions cheaply and quickly, leaving a residue to be rerun for lubricants, coke, and other products. The reader in studying a plant for possible adaption to his own use should note that local considerations enter into the design and size of a plant. Several questions present themselves, as follows: 1. What type is suitable for the oil? 2. How much money is available for construction? 3. Will the volume of residuum be large enough for heat exchange with the crude? 4. Can the heat content of the vapors be used to reduce the cooling-water requirements? 5. What method will best recover the heat from stack gases? 6. Are the various pieces of apparatus adequate in size and best adapted to their purpose? 7. Is every possible provision made for the recovery of waste heat? 8. What products will be made, and what volume of each? 9. Is there provision for the recovery of light vapors? 10. Will the saving of fuel justify the capital and maintenance charges on the regenerative apparatus contemplated? It is regretted that information concerning the operation of topping plants with eastern and Middle West oils is not available. The writer carefully canvassed the Middle West, but did not find a plant where operation had progressed beyond the early experimental stages and reliable figures could be furnished. The reader will find fuel economy and heat recovery emphasized throughout the descriptions. The conservation of the available petroleum supply is of the utmost importance, and the Bureau of Mines presents this paper to encourage the hearty cooperation of operators to that end. The Baume gravity scale used throughout the report is that of Tagliabue with a modulus of 141.5 for conversion to specific gravity.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the resources, costs, capacities, market relationships, and short- and long-run supply of phosphate rock and phosphoric acid. The 206 mines and deposits evaluated in 30 market economy countries contain an estimated 35.1 billion mt of recoverable phosphate rock (demonstrated resource level). U.S. resources are sufficient to satisfy the domestic and export markets for phosphate products well beyond the year 2000. Because of resource depletion at current producers, however, new properties (with higher cost levels) need to be developed if U.S. production levels are to be maintained. Existing worldwide capacity can satisfy expected demand through the early 1990's. Expansion at existing mines or low demand growth could mean that no new property development will be needed before the late 1990's. Worldwide, almost $8 billion could be required for development of new phosphate rock properties between now and the year 2000, given 3-pct annual growth in demand. Most properties that could develop in the 1990's would require price increases of 20 to 50 pct to break even. To earn a 15-pct rate of return on investment, prices must rise to nearly double the present level of $24 to $29 per metric ton.

"The spatial distribution of airborne dusts, deposition of dust in the airway, as well as the effect of airflow velocity and particle density on dust behavior in mine airways were studied in a set of experiments performed in a mine airway under controlled conditions. Considerable deposition of dust near the source was indicated. Pronounced effects due to velocity were observed in ambient dust concentration and deposition along the mine airway, both in the respirable and the total size ranges. Cross-sectional concentration measurements indicate an increase in concentration from the roof to the floor. The average cross-sectional concentration is about 75% of the concentration in the center of the airway.IntroductionA number of studies have been performed since the early 1950s on the behavior of dust in mine air (Bradshaw and Godbert, 1954; Dawes and Slack, 1954; Bradshaw et al., 1954; Hall, 1955-56; Reinhardt, 1971; Ford, 1971; Courtney et al., 1982). While the experimental data available from these studies are indeed useful in understanding dust cloud behavior in a specific situation, no generalized conclusions can be drawn because of the lack of data on parameters such as flow velocity, size distribution of the source dust, and particle density. These change from mine to mine or even within the same mine. The present study is aimed at providing a better understanding of the temporal and spatial behavior of dust particles in underground' mine airways (National Academy of Sciences, 1980). The characteristics studied encompassed airborne concentrations and floor depositions over the entire size range as well as the respirable size range. The experimental results in this paper are intended to complement a mathematical model developed to predict ambient concentration and deposition of airborne dust in mine airways (Bhaskar and Ramani, 1986)."

The increasing demands for petroleum and its products and the steadily increasing cost of discovering and developing new oil fields are factors that emphasize the importance of increasing the recovery of oil from known petroleum reserves. Water flooding is a valuable conservation measure, not only preventing premature abandonment of stripper leases but also reviving interest in many areas previously abandoned. The use of water flooding as a means for recovering additional oil from partly depleted oil-bearing formations was first tried in Oklahoma in 1931. Early water-flooding operations were confined to the area of shallow Bartlesville-sand formations in Nowata and Rogers Counties, where many of the projects were outstandingly successful. The results of these operations stimulated activities in other pools in Oklahoma, and by the end of 1949 water flooding had been tried in 25 of the 49 oil-producing counties in the State (fig. 1). Approximately 33 million barrels of oil, or 1,806 barrels per acre, had been recovered by December 31, 1949, from 18,221 productive acres included in the 162 active and abandoned projects in Oklahoma by injection of approximately 449 million barrels of water.

A mass spectral scheme of analysis was devised which can be used to identify individually a single compound from a larger group of similar compounds. Mass spectra for 32 alkyl aryl sulfides are provided for future reference work, and analytical correlations used in producing the analytical scheme are discussed. Some of the correlations show that base peaks are either the same mass as the parent peaks or may be derived from cleavage alpha to the sulfur atom with migration of one hydrogen to the sulfur atom. Other spectral consistencies provide means of separating ortho-, meta-, and paratolyl arrangements in an overall analytical scheme. Determinations of chain lengths and separation of isomeric species are also discussed.

"INTRODOCTIONMeasurement of the contribution of diesel exhaust to respirable aerosol in mine environments has become increasingly important because of current concerns over the occupational health effects resulting from exposure to diesel emissions. In response to this, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing and evaluating new sampling methods for measuring diesel aerosol in underground mines. Two such techniques are being studied by the Bureau, size selective sampling and Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling. These techniques use measurable physical or chemical characteristics of a mine aerosol sample to infer the amount of diesel particulate material contained in the sample.Size selective sampling is being adapted for measurement of diesel aerosol by the Particle Technology Laboratory (PTL) of the University of Minnesota under sponsorship by the Bureau. 1 It is based on the premise that diesel and mineral dust aerosol can be physically separated by size and collected during sampling using inertial impaction. An independent effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to develop a size selective sampling technique was also sponsored by the Bureau.The second technique, CMB modeling, is being developed by the Bureau as an alternative measurement technique to referee the results obtained using size selective sampling.3 It compares measured trace element ""finger prints"" of aerosol sources with similar profiles of mine aerosol samples. From these, the portions of the sample contributed by each source can be determined. Results of these investigations in underground coal mines have confirmed that diesel and coal dust aerosol are of different size and can be measured separately using size selective sampling techniques.A major difference in diesel usage among underground mines is the requirement for exhaust gas cooling systems in coal and gassy noncoal mines. Nongassy mines usually employ limited exhaust conditioning in the form of catalytic converters, which have limited effect on primary exhaust particulate. The cooling system in most general use in gassy mines is the water scrubber. This device has little effect on most of the gases but removes particulate material from the exhaust. 5 Because of this, exhaust aerosol characteristics in nongassy mines are expected to be different. To see if size selective sampling techniques can be used in such mines, the Bureau and the University of Minnesota conducted a second study in three metal and nonmetal mines, two nongassy and one rated as gassy."

During the latter part of 1943, a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the Mahopac magnetite mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the ore body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahopac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magnetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by "pinching", or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance from the original are body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained.

A new, cheaper precipitation scheme has been developed to produce purified zirconium oxide, Technical-grade sulfuric acid is used to precipitate a basic zirconium sulfate from a hot dilute hydrochloric acid solution. With close control of temperature, pH, and zirconium - sulfate ratio, excellent purification and complete zirconium recovery can be attained. The process has been successfully applied for 3 months and has proved to be a more satisfactory procedure than the ammonium phthalate process used previously. A table of factors, for rapid, accurate calculation of the volume of pure helium in cylindrical steel containers, is presented. By use of the table the volume of helium in a container, at base conditions of 14.7 psia and 70° F, can be calculated from the observed pressure and temperature of the helium and the known internal volume of the container. The table covers a pressure range from a to 4,500 psia in 10 psi increments and a temperature range of 0° to 120° F in 2° increments. The calculation of volume requires a single multiplication, using a factor from the table and the known internal volume of the container. A discussion and evaluation of the accuracy obtainable and a derivation of the formula used (which takes into account compressibility of helium, thermal expansion of steel containers, and the stretch of steel due to internal pressure) are presented. An example showing how the table can be used is given also.

This report is a proceedings of a briefing recently sponsored by the Bureau of Mines at which Bureau personnel presented findings from their research efforts to improve steelmaking techology currently used in the United States. The papers contained in this report address many areas of concern to the iron and steelmaking industry. Among these are improving arc stability in electric arc furnaces, preheating ferrous scrap to reduce energy consumption, fluorspar substitutes in steel-making, basic steelmaking refractories, corrosion of iron-based materials, improvements in stainless steel acid pickling processes, recycling of stainless steel dusts and other wastes, and use of wastes as a source of zinc for electro/galvanizing.

As a part of a Bureau of Mines program on the conversion of coal to liquid and gaseous fuels, the kinetics of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis on iron catalysts was investigated. Nitrided catalysts were studied at 21.4 atmospheres using feed gases ranging from 2H2+1CO to 0.25H2+1CO, and at 7.8 to 21.4 atmospheres using 1H2+1CO gas. The overall apparent activation energy increased with increasing carbon monoxide content of the feed gas from 19.5 kcal/mole for 2H2+1CO to 23.7 for 0.7H2+1CO. The rate of synthesis with 1H2+1CO feed increased linearly with operating pressure from 7.8 to 21.4 atmospheres. A semifundamental rate equation of the form [r=a'PH2 0.6pco 0.4- ?r0.5PH200.5] was shown to fit the data satisfactorily. The relative usage of hydrogen to carbon monoxide decreased with increasing conversion, passed a minimum, and then increased. Apparently water is the principal primary product and carbon dioxide is produced by subsequent water-gas shift reaction. In another group of experiments water, carbon dioxide, argon, and methane were added to 1H2+1CO feed to a nitrided iron catalyst. Argon and methane were only diluents. Carbon dioxide was a slight inhibitor and water vapor was a strong inhibitor to the rate of synthesis. Water accelerated the water-gas shift and usually increased methane production. Important factors of catalyst geometry in determining rate were found to be particle size and extent of reduction. Apparently the active portion of the catalyst is confined to a layer of 0.01 to 0.02 cm from the external surface of particles. A special solution was made of differential equations relating re¬action at the catalyst surface to diffusion in pores of the catalyst for spherical particles with an active layer surrounding an inert core. The equation derived expressed the experimental data reasonably well. Diffusivities determined by this equation varied from 3 to 24X10-6 cm2/sec; these values are of the same magnitude as observed for the diffusion of gases in liquid. The appendix presents a group of synthesis experiments at pressures of 21.4 to 103 atmospheres. In this range the rate of synthesis on nitrided iron catalysts increased with pressure to the 0.74 to 0.84 power.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study intended to determine if horizontal stress trends exist and if the stresses can be projected for improved mine design in a selected coalfield. The horizontal stresses were determined in three mines in the Yampa Coalfield and one mine in the adjacent Danforth Hills Coalfield of northwestern Colorado. Stresses were determined from stress-relief measurements using a three-component borehole deformation gauge and overcoring techniques developed by the Bureau. A least-squares method of calculating the average rock stress components in the horizontal plane was performed. Physical properties of the rock from the test sites are also included. For the Yampa Coalfield, the maximum horizontal compressive stress in the floor ranged from 363 to 1,956 psi, and the maximum horizontal compressive stress in the roof ranged from 235 to 875 psi. For the Dan-forth Hills Coalfield, the maximum horizontal compressive stress in the floor ranged from 360 to 1,494 psi, and the maximum horizontal compres-sive stress in the roof was 1,033 psi. Results indicated a trend of low horizontal stresses in the Yampa Coalfield that have not impacted ground control conditions in mines less than 1,000 ft deep.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash- softening temperature of ash, the free-swelling index, and the hardgrove grind- ability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instruc- tions issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the con- tractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal. The Government purchased approximately 5-1/4 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1953. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 11,435 samples. These are published for the use of Government officials and the public. A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States, or, where production is small in any one State, by groups of adjacent States. In addition to analytical data showing composition and quality of coals of the States, the publications con- tain brief descriptions of the geological structure of the coal basins, typical mining conditions in the various districts, the principal economic data of the industry, and the relationship of mine or channel samples to delivered and tipple samples. The present publication covers many States but deals only with the analytical data of the coals. The Townsite mine, consisting of 40 acres in the town of Cardin, Okla., is in the center of a highly productive part of the Picher-Cardin district of the Tri-State zinc and lead field. Previous to the time of the work done by the Bureau of Mines, the property had been partly explored by churn drilling, and an area-of about 8 acres in the southwestern corner had been exploited by underground workings. The Bureau of Mines investigation had as its object the more intensive development of the northern part of the property where previous drilling had indicated a possible ore deposit of commercial grade. Churn drilling by the Bureau began in September 1942 and continued to February 1943. Twenty holes totaling 4,827 feet of bore were completed. Utilizing the information gained from these drill holes, the Weidman Mining Co., lessee of the tract, sank a shaft and proceeded to the exploitation of the indicated ore bodies.
