Diatomite is the name now generally given to a mineral substance composed of the tiny , skeletal remains of diatoms , which are microscopic , flowerless , water plants related to the algae ... This residuum is essentially hydrous amorphous silica. Common names for diatomite are : Diatomaceous earth , tripolite , kieselguhr , and infusorial earth . Strictly speaking , however , the latter material is not diatomite , as it is composed of the fossil remains of infusoria , which usually do not occur with the diatomaceae . Other synonyms for diatomite are : Diatomaceous silica , kieselmehl , bergmehl , diatomeenpeelite , polirschiefer , moler , molera , molererde , de smid earth , fossil flour , mountain flour , farine fossil , white peat , radiolarian earth , chalk rock, ceyssatite , randanite , and tellurine ; also various diatomite products of individual companies are known by their own trade names . Diatomite should not be confused with fuller's earth , for the two are separate and distinct substances . Bentonite , pumice , and tripoli , have also been used erroneously to designate diatomite . In the commercial evaluation of coal tars, a distillation analysis properly carried out is of considerable importance. Close attention must be given to this operation in order to obtain consistent results and to secure the minimum decomposition of the tar compounds, Which in Many cases are sensitive to undue heat effects. Low-temperature tars in particular contain compounds of this nature, while in the case of tars produced at high temperatures the large proportion of pitch present has an adverse influence during a distillation. If excessive cracking takes place, the composition of the distillate will naturally vary from the normal, with the result that all the analytical criteria subsequently obtained are affected. Where tars, produced over wide ranges of carbonization temperatures are investigated as in the survey of gas, coke, and by-product making properties of American coals now being conducted at the United States Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment Station, the method of distillation must necessarily be the same for all of the tars studied. Also, it mast function equally well for both low and high temperature tar permit accurate fractionation, and reduce adventitious decomposition to a minimum. The authors are aware that certain types of distillation analysis which do not meet the above requirements may give results comparable with those of the large stills of a by-product coke-plant where one type of tar is produced. These may be simpler and shorter and entirely suitable for control work, but at the same time have little value in a fundamental investigation.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the thirteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The description of the deposits developed is followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

This publication is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of producing uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau. The information it contains was gathered in 1955-58 and applies to eight small operations. (See fig. 1.) Mining costs have increased since the data were I collected, but the information should be helpful in estimating future costs I at similar deposits. The Bureau of Mines had early experience in the production of carnotite-type ores on the Colorado Plateau.3 4/ Under a cooperative agreement with the National Radium Institute in 1914-16, the Bureau mined and concentrated carnotite ore for recovery of radium, uranium, and vanadium. The ore was taken from claims in or near Long Park Montrose County, Colo., about 3 mi. south of La Salle Mining Co.'s La Salle mine, which is one of the mines described in this report. The Bureau leased the claims from Crucible Steel Mining & Milling Co., a subsidiary of Crucible Steel Co. of America, and from 1914 to 1916 produced 990 tons of high-grade ore, containing 2.6 pct. U308, and about 2,000 tons of mill-grade ore, containing 0.85 pct. U308. The high-grade ore was shipped directly to a radium-recovery plant built in Denver in 1914 under the cooperative agreement. There, commercial methods of extracting uranium, vanadium, and radium from carnotite ores were developed by Bureau personnel. The lower grade ore was concentrated at a small mill in Long Park before being shipped to Denver. The final recovery was 69,000 lb. of U308 and 8.8 g. of radium. The direct mining cost of producing the high-grade ore, including the labor to hand sort and sack it, was $35.96 per ton. Freighting the ore 58 miles to Placerville, Colo., the nearest rail point on the Rio Grande Southern Railway, cost $25.28 per ton, which included $4.55 per ton for ore bags and twine. The introduction of "high-tech" materials such as new polymer composites presents significant competitive challenges and opportunities in conventional mineral markets. Moreover, rapid advances in materials science are critical to the resolution of important economic and strategic issues, including national competitiveness and import dependence. This Bureau of Mines study examines the displacement of conventional nonfuel mineral materials by certain new materials, specifically advanced plastics and ceramics. Analyses of substitution by plastics are conducted for five major U.S. industrial sectors: motor vehicle manufacturing, aerospace applications, building and construction, packaging, and heavy machinery production. Based on interviews with more than 60 scientists, executives, and other professionals engaged in materials development and sales, forecasts of substitution by plastics during the 1990's are made for aluminum, steel, and glass. In addition to these forecasts, study findings identify key factors that will influence the emergence of advanced materials in the next decade.

"The results of a two—year research study into the relationship between quartz dust levels in host material and in respirable dust in continuous mining sections are presented in this paper. The experimental design and sampling procedures for underground data collection are outlined. The sample analysis procedures for quartz determination, the ¬analysis results and conclusions of the study are discussed.The results of the study indicate that the quartz contents of the airborne dusts are generally higher than those in the host material and bulk samples; and the quartz content increases with decreasing size of the airborne dust. The source for quartz appears to be the roof and the floor materials rather than the coal seam itself. It also appears that the material containing quartz may be breaking into a different size distribution than coal.INTRODUCTION Without doubt, the potential for permanent and severe health damage exists due to respirable dust in the work environment. The attention directed at the reduction of respirable airborne dust to levels below those specified in the law and the achievements to date in meeting these standards are but a reflection of the recognition by many parties government, industry, and labor - of this potential and the need to reduce it.The ambient dust standard in underground U.S. coal mines (2 mg/s3) has a qualifier (Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Part 71.101) to determine an applicable dust standard when a respirable dust sample contains more than 5% quartz. This standard is frequently referred to as the ""reduced standard."" The reasoning behind the reduced standard is the relative toxicity of the quartz dust compared to that of pure coal dust. As the quartz levels in samples increase, the applicable standards become more stringent and maintaining the workings in compliance becomes increasingly difficult.The number of underground work locations operating under the reduced standards has shown a dramatic increase since 1980 (Figure 1). For comparison purposes, there were no mining entities operating on reduced standards prior to 1977. The emergence of this problem, which affects the health and safety standards on one hand and creates severe compliance problems on the other, has been rapid."

This report presents a structural analysis of the economies of Spokane County, Washington and 21 surrounding counties. An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. The Micro IMPLAN modeling system with the 1990 county database was used to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading industries, with respect to employee compensation, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown (or each county and the region. The total industry output from the Spokane Economic Trade Area (S ETA) region is valued at $22.3 billion. The SETA region provides $7.1 billion in employee compensation to a work force of 374,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total output, employee compensation, and employment. Both Spokane County and the region as a whole produce about 80 percent of total industry output for final demand with the remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. About $7.4 billion of the $22.3 billion SETA output is exported from the region. Spokane County exports about $4.7 billion, or 41 percent of the $11.5 billion Spokane County output. Exports account for more than 50 percent of the total output in 12 of the 22 counties within the region. Based on the output of the top 25 industries in each county and the SETA region about 9 percent of the industry output from Spokane County and 18 percent of the regional industry output come from natural resource based industries. For counties other than Spokane County, total industry' output from natural resource based industries represents from 12 percent to 81 percent of county output from the top 25 industries. Natural resource industries account for more than 50 percent of total county output in 8 counties within the region

Measurements were made of the flow of helium, methane, ethane, butane, and toluene through thin disks of coal. All measurements were made on a dense layer in the Pittsburgh seam identified as attritus. Flow increased with pressure differential and temperature. At room temperature and a pressure differential of 1 atmosphere flow rates along the bedding plane of Pittsburgh seam coal were helium 881 X 10-10 cm2 sec-1, methane 1.2 X 10 -10 cm2 sec-1, ethane 0.54 X 10-10 cm 2 sec-1, n-butane 0.35 X 10-10 cm2sec-1, and toluene 3.8 X 10-10 cm2sec-1. Flow rates were 50 percent lower across the bedding plane of the coal than along the bedding plane. Activation energies were 3.9 kcal mole-1 for helium and 13.6 kcal mole-1 for methane, with diffusion measured either along or across the bedding plane.

The top-slicing system of mining, has been used ever since the present operating company took control of the property in 1903, the main level and sublevel layout being chanced only as local conditions required and the use of mechanical equipment increased.

Thirty-seven blasts have been monitored using either three or four seismographs, at four coal strip mines and at a limestone quarry. Statistical analysis of the data shows that square-root, cube-root, and site-specific scaling methods predict peak particle velocities with about the same (low) degree of reliability. Some mines have peak particle velocities that are significantly lower or higher than the U.S. Bureau of Mines averages (Siskind et al., 1980). This suggests that the option provided by the proposed regulations (Office of Surface Mining, 1983), to adjust blast designs based on site-specific measurements could be highly beneficial both to operators and to the public. The frequency spectra reveal that the predominant frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz but several blasts had a significant amount of energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases the vibration energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to the delay intervals.

The economic value of reducing the evaporation losses of crude oil and of gasoline is so well founded that the petroleum industry is constantly seeking new and improved storage tanks and methods of handling its products to further reduce these losses. A comparison of the methods and apparatus used in handling and storing crude oil and its products today with those in general use 10 years ago would show that an oil tank is no longer simply a container for holding liquid, but is now considered an important piece of equipment which if, subjected to constant inspection and care. In fact, the modern vapor-tight tank often requires as much care as a boiler or pump when one considers Its various component parts such as vapor-tight gage hatches and thief-hole covers, vacuum and pressure relief valves, swing line apparatus, vapor-recovery systems, insulation, cooling devices, and often automatic gaging devices. As an auxiliary to the physical equipment of the tank itself the subject of paints and paint colors is now given considerable attention. In addition to vapor-tight tanks and auxiliary equipment, other types of tanks for reducing, evaporation which are new to the industry have also been developed and placed on the market within the past few years. The development of the floating roof type was an innovation in tank construction, directed toward the reducing of evaporation losses. This type of roof rides on the surface of the oil and thus eliminates all vapor space. It is especially valuable for working tanks.3 A recent development in tank construction is a new type of tank roof known as the diaphragm or "breather roof," Which practically eliminates the movement of air-vapor mixture from a storage tank filled with oil. It is of especial value for use on tanks in which oil is stored over long periods.

"Under contract to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, a study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of using the microorifice. uniform deposit impactor (MOUOI) to measure the size distribution of aerosols containing various mixtures of coal dust and diesel exhaust particles. The project objective was to determine if the mass concentration of diesel exhaust particles, in an airborne mixture of coal dust and diesel exhaust particles, could be determined on the basis of the size distribution of the two aerosols. In general, the mass of diesel exhaust particles is in the submicrometer size range while that of the coal particles lie in the larger size ranges.The MOUDI is a cascade impactor with small diameter nozzles to obtain small cut sizes and rotating impaction plates to avoid particle overloading of the deposit. For this study, a 7 stage version was used. At the sample flow rate of 30 L/min, the cut sizes were 0.10, 0.23, 0.70, 1.0, 2.6, 4.9 and 10 pm.Size distributions of aerosols generated in the laboratory and in several underground coal mines were measured. The primary emphasize of the laboratory tests was to ascertain if the diesel exhaust particles could be separated from the coal dust, regardless of mass fraction of the diesel exhaust particles in the total aerosol mixture. Diesel exhaust, from a Caterpillar Type 3304 NA diesel engine, was mixed with coal dust generated with a· TSI Model 3400 fluidized bed dust generator. Experiments showed the size distributions of the mixed aerosols exhibited two definite modes with the minimum between the two modes in the 0.7 to 1.0 um size range. Distinct modal separation was obtained as the mixture fraction of the diesel exhaust aerosols was varied from 3% to 98%.The field study was conducted in three underground coal mines, two utilizing diesel-powered equipment and the third exclusively using electric equipment. Sampling sites were selected to obtain a wide variety in the diesel exhaust and dust aerosol concentrations. Size distribution data showed these aerosols are bimodal. The mass median aerodynamic diameters of the diesel particulate mode and the coal dust mode were approximately 0.15 µm and 3 to 10 un, respectively. The results, in all cases, clearly show a separation between the two modes in the 0.7 to 1.0 µm size range with the minimum in the vicinity of 0.8 pm. The separation was found to be independent of mass fraction of the diesel exhaust particles, total particle concentration and sampling site."

The Brewer mine, near Jefferson, Chesterfield County, S. C., was originally operated as a gold mine. As late as 1890 this mine was reported to have been one of the large gold producers in the southeast. Occurrence of topaz on the Brewer property was not reported until 1935, when it was discovered, by Parks3/ and Parks of the Federal Geological Survey while they were investigating gold deposits in the Piedmont province.

Rapid expansion of the titanium-metal industry focused attention upon ilmenite as a possible substitute for the more expensive and less abundant rutile in producing titanium tetrachloride. Most of the rutile available for this use is imported. Preliminary studies were undertaken to determine the chlorination characteristics of high-titanium slags produced by electric-arc furnace smelting of alluvial Idaho ilmenite at the Federal Bureau of Mines Northwest Electrodevelopment Experiment Station, Albany, Oreg. Low silicon, calcium, and aluminum contents of the slags enhanced their potential value for chlorination.

A field method has been devised for rapid determination of heavy minerals occurring in the unconsolidatod beach and dune sands. The method has been proved practical by usage in field evaluations of several hundred beach- and dune-sand samples in the Florida area. The simple equipment required and the techniques involved are described. Other data show that the method is relatively insensitive to variations in the mineralogical content or size distribution of the mixed heavy minerals contained in the samples tested. A modification of this procedure, found to be suitable for plant use in determining the relative purity of heavy-mineral flotation concentrates, is also described. A specific application is determination of the amount of feldspar-quartz in spodumene flotation concentrates. The results of the rapid evaluation techniques closely approximate those obtained by more precise laboratory procedures.

"The factors that determine the efficiency of reduction of iron oxides by gaseous reducing agents may be considered in two classes; those which effect the equilibrium between the reacting substances end their products, and those which affect the rete of reaction. Both sets are of prectical importance, the former as influencing the maximum possible efficiency and the latter as determining what fraction of the maximum yield may be readily or profitably obtained. In addition, the thermal changes attending the reduction greatly affect the chance of successful industrial application of any such process, and knowledge of them is necessary for the intelligent design of apparatus and control of the reaction. Some aspects of each of these three divisions of the problem are discussed below.I. The Maximum Reducing Power of Fuel Gases on the Oxides of IronsThe gases that heve been considered specifically in this work are coal gas, water gas and producer gas, typical analyses” of which are given in Table 1 Of the various hydrocarbons represented in Table 1, (several being grouped or averaged as C2R4), methane is the only gas assumed to be capable of existence at appreciable pressures under the conditions of interest here. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a long-term groundwater monitoring and site characterization program at an abandoned 10-ha, acid-producing, copper-gold tailings impoundment in north-central Washington State. The purpose was to investigate contaminant release and transport, and attenuation mechanisms in the tailings, sediments below the tailings, and gravels downgradient of the impoundment. This report summarizes the monitoring results and physical properties of the tailings, the sediments below the tailings, and the groundwater system associated with the tailings. Water samples from the vadose and saturated zones of the impoundment were analyzed for 15 constituents. Concentrations of the same constituents were determined in water samples up to 3 m beneath the impoundment and in the shallow colluvium and deep bedrock at 76, 335, and 550 m downgradient and 168 m upgradient. Constituent concentrations within the tailings are quite variable and are influenced by pH, depth of oxidation, grain-size differential (surface area), hydraulic gradient, groundwater mixing, and the presence of hardpan layers, carbonaceous material, and organic matter. Most of the metal constituents decreased to background or near-background concentrations in the farthest downgradient well.

"The size distributions of carefully screened 2 size fractions of ground materials were determined using a Microtrac laser dif-fractometer. The size distributions were fitted to the empirical function P(x) = 1/[1 + (x50/x)1] where P(x) is cumulative mass fraction less than Microtrac size, x. The standard deviation of A for a 50 second test time was approximately 0.5, so that seventeen test times give a mean with an estimated error within t 0.25 (95% confidence level). Values of were 5.44, 4.82, 4.40 for a coal ground under different conditions, indicating statistically different shape distributions; the average value for mica was 2.91 owing to the high aspect ratio of the particles. The ratio of x50 to the geometric mean sieve size was 1.2 for the coal and 0.70 for mica.1 IntroductionKoka and Trass have presented evidence [1,2] that materials ground in the Szego mill [3] give different shapes depending on the milling conditions. The variations in shape were deduced qualitatively by viewing SEM photomicrographs of selected 1/2 screen fractions. This paper quantifies their observed differences in shape by using measurements of the size distributions of screen fractions examined in a laser diffractometer [4] (Microtrac, Model 7991). The basic concept is that particles of 'a given ""screen"" size will give a wider distribution of ""Microtrac"" size when the particles are flaky with high aspect ratios, and a narrower distribution when the particles approach the cubical and spherical geometries.2 TheoryAustin and Shah [5] have shown that coal screened within a 1. 1/2 upper-to-lower sieve size range will give rise to a much wider distribution of Microtrac size. They found that the screen interval of irregular fragments of comminuted coals or quartz gave Microtrac size distributions which could be described by the simple function"

Near the close of the nineteenth century electricity was introduced underground, and the mining industry automatically was confronted with another potential source of fatalities and injuries to mine workers. Electricity has become an increasingly vital factor in the production of goal, particularly in recent years, because of the greatly extended mechanization that has taken place underground. The enlarged use of electrical equipment for cutting, loading, and hauling coal unquestionably increased the potentiality of shock and explosion hazards underground. Electricity may be used in coal mines with minimum danger if electric equipment and power-carrying wires are chosen properly and installed and kept protected by proper safeguards; on the other hand, if vigilance is relaxed in the slightest degree accidents may result. Electrical accidents are caused chiefly by direct contact with electrical equipment or power-carrying wires, by ignition of explosive gas or dust, and by fires of electrical origin. Electricity now ranks fourth as a cause of coal-mine fatalities, not including deaths from explosions or fires of electrical origin.
