Many analysts have had difficulty in obtaining accurate and consistent determinations of the volatile matter in low-temperature coke when the usual standard method for coal was followed. The tendency is toward too-high results, due to mechanical losses which are extremely difficult to avoid or control. With cokes there also may be an error due to excessive oxidation of the fixed carbon. Much of the earlier experimental work on the volatile-matter determination in coal, such as that of Parr, Fieldner and Davis, and others, has been on the effect of time, temperatures, shape and size of crucibles, method of applying heat, and type of furnace, all of which data has evolved the present A.S. T. M. standard method for volatile matter in coal and coke. It is not the purpose of this investigation to deal directly with the above phases of the procedure, but rather to study some of the factors affecting the results in those types of fuel which give erroneous results due to mechanical losses. This mechanical loss is usually designated as "sparking." There are two kinds of sparks or incandescent particles which may appear: particles of soot from partially condensed carbon from the burning gases, and unburned particles of the material itself which escape. The first type does not affect the accuracy of the volatile matter results, and is therefore negligible. The second type, however, causes appreciable loss and results in showing higher volatile percentages than actually exist.

"INTRODUCTION On February 23, 1944, Solid Fuels Administrator Harold L. Ickes stated that the existing fuel shortage made it necessary to utilize a great surplus of freshly mined anthracite ranging in size from Barley (No. 3 Buckwheat) downward through the smaller sizes. As a part of the program to increase the use of such coal, field trials of mixtures of bituminous slack coal and anthracite Barley were made on industrial-size stokers at many fuel-burning plants. The following covers the test information it was possible to accu-mulate during the work of initiating the use of these mixtures at the plants.SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONSField tests of various mixtures of bituminous slack coal and anthracite Barley on industrial-type stokers show that the use of such mixtures is very practicable and that it is possible to change and usually to adjust to an improved condition the characteristics of a fuel bed of eastern bituminous slack coal by the addition of proper amounts of anthracite. The improved uniformity of the fuel bed of single-retort stokers makes possible less manual attention to the bed. Air flow through the fuel bed is affected.Smoke is decreased. In general, the fly ash and also the unburned combustible in the fly ash and refuse are increased. Clinkering in the fuel bed is generally lessened. The peak-load carrying capacity of the stoker is definitely affected, usually adversely for the higher percentages of anthracite."

These sources, as listed at the end of the table, were many and varied, and it believed that the tabulation gives the best general information obtainable. However, its known accuracy and completeness of coverage necessarily fall far short of published data on coals of the United States. An expert system advisor consultant to assist a coal mine section foreman is described in this report. The system is designed for an underground continuous miner section that is being specifically used for longwall development. The system provides three methods of operation that include normal operational mode for use underground, a training mode for use in training section foremen under controlled classroom conditions, and a demonstration mode that is free running. The Face Decision Support System or FDSS, is designed to interface with section environmental monitoring equipment and section production monitoring equipment that may appear in the future. This provides automated reprioritzation of the section foreman's job list from the system. The system 1S written in LASER which is written in C and is operated under the UNIX operating system. The objective of the entire FOSS system is to ensure that no job or piece of information important to safety or to production is forgotten because of the immediate problems confronting the section foreman.

This report describes the mining and milling practices used by the Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. at its Johnson, Vt., operation. The report also contains a description of the local geology and all available information on cost and performance data. Since 1925 the mine has produced continuously at an average annual rate of 54,000 tons, and the ratio of ore hoisted to finished product is roughly 2 to 1. Ore is stoped by a combination of shrinkage and sublevel methods. In any 24-hour period the mill produces an average total of 14 grades of finished talc product, 9 by dry grinding and air classification and 5 by wet grinding and flotation methods. The mine operates one shift per day, 5 days per week and the mill operates on a 3-shift, 5-1/2-day-per-week basis. Operating costs for 1958, on a percentage basis, were mining, 22.34; milling, 54.77; ore haulage, 2.89; and all other, 20.00 percent.

"Helium has great value to the oil and as industry as a tracer gas, according to tests just completed in the Elk Hills Field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, Kearn County, California. When used as .a tracer gas, small percentages of helium are mixed with natural gas pumped into a reservoir for conservation, repressuring, or cycling purposes. Because minute quantities of helium added to natural gases can be detected by analytical methods and accurately determined, the variations of the helium content of gas withdrawn from various parts of a field when helium has been added to the injected gas give interesting and long-sought data on the movement of injected gas through reservoirs.The Bureau of Mines engineers began their studies of the use of helium as a tracer material in gas-injection operations in the Elk Hills, California, oil field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, in response to a request by the Navy Department for assistance in connection with an expanded oil-production program instituted in that field. This report discusses the Bureau's work on the problem of determining the direction and extent of migration of injected gas in the Elk Hills reservoir by the use of helium as a tracer gas,The Bureau appreciates the cooperation and assistance of Commodore W. G. Greenman, U.S.N., director, and Commander R. Walling, U.S.N.R., Assistant director, Naval Petroleum .and Oil Shale Reserves, Washington, D. C., Captain H. P. The Crewstation Analysis Programs (CAP) is a package of computer programs that can be used to analyze some human engineering aspects of crewstation design (such as visibility and illumination) that have particular significance in underground mining. It was developed under the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Health, Safety and Mining Technology program at the Pittsburgh Research Center, Pittsburgh, PA. This manual describes the steps necessary to collect data in the laboratory to develop luminaire profiles for the CAP illumination analysis. It also describes how the CAP Illumination Model calculates illumination. 1.1 How CAP Calculates Illumination 1.1.1 Background -CAP currently includes assessments of visibility and illumination in the surrounding work area. The advantage of using computers for these types of analyses is that many design iterations can be tested quickly and efficiently to learn the effects of changes. This reduces the need for expensive testing using physical mockups. Another advantage is that design ideas can be tested in situations where it would not normally be possible. For instance, the effects of modifications to a lighting system or canopy design on visibility could be tested while the machine remains in service.

"INTRODUCTION Corrosion of sections of piping used in steam-heating systems is frequently regarded as unavoidable, and periodic replacement is provided. Surfaces exposed to newly condensed steam appear to be especially vulnerable to attack. As an added nuisance, solid products of the corrosion tend to accumulate, plugging return lines.The trouble is ascribed in the main to carbon dioxide and oxygen 3/ 4 / 5/ 6/ dissolved in the condensate. When oxygen is the principal factor, the corrosion usually is characterized by pitting. Carbon dioxide tend3 to cause an acidic condensate which dissolves the metal more uniformly and produces the familiar failure at threaded areas where the piping is relatively thin, and where high stress may tend to acceletate the attack. Carbon dioxide enters the system with the feedwater, generally in a combined form such as carbonates and bicarbonates. Oxygen enters both with the raw feedwater-and as air leaking into lines under partial vacuum. The larger central-heating plants have sought to reduce corrosion by eliminating these gases as much as possible. A smaller plant ordinarily lacks the equipment and technical supervision required for this purpose."

The methodology for describing the geochemistry of elements in a coal seam have been developed. This has been applied to the Rosebud Coal Seam, which is an economically important member of the subbituminous coals of the Fort Union Formation in Eastern Montana. The method development has involved a detailed study of two popular techniques for determining the metal geochemistry of coal, namely, whole coal analyses and coal physical fractionation. The mathematically contrived element associations (whole coal analyses technique) and the element concentration trends in the float and sink fractions (physical fractionation technique) are considered to lead to only qualitative conclusions concerning the chemical associations of the elements in coals. Additionally, the processes taking place with the coal during low temperature ashing in an oxygen plasma are experimentally investigated and shown to be of sufficeint extent that the use of such low temperature ash for deciphering element geochemistry is questionable. The method developed in this study is a chemical fractionation that involves the sequential leaching of coal with water, 0.5 N HC1, 3 N HC1, 2 N HNO3, and 48% HF. These leach solutions are shown to selectively dissolve the predominate inorganic phases, sulfates, Ca and Mg carbonates, Fe sulfides and K alumino-silicates and quartz, respectively. These phases were identified with the use of XRD, SEM, EM and leaches (water and 0.3 N HC1) of whole coal and low temperature ash. The incorporation of the anion-exchange step in the leaching scheme was investigated and was observed to warrant further study of such intensity to be, at the time, unuseable. The use of this sequential leaching technique on several coal samples from the same seam generates element concentration trends that can be quantitatively interpreted with respect to the chemical associations of the minor and trace metals in the coal seam. The properties of the various seams of economic importance in the Fort Union Formation in Eastern Montana are compiled and presented. The subsequent conclusion is that there is not a large variation in the properties of these coal seams and that the variations within the Rosebud are within one order of magnitude. The chemical fractionation technique, investigated in this study, was applied to composite tipple samples of the Rosebud seam. Each composite sample represented 76,800 tons of coal. A minimum of 32% of the Ca and Mg are present as separate water soluble sulfates. An excess of the sulfate ion in the water extracts shows the predominating influence of the ion exchange capacity of the organic compounds in the coal. Based upon the CO content of the coal and the HC1 leachate data, 25 to 30% of the alkaline earth elements exist as separate carbonates and the remainder are associated with the organic compounds. The small fraction of the illite that dissolves in the HC1 and HNO3 leachates accounts for the K and Al. Slight dissolution of the pyrite in the HCl solvent occurs, the small amounts of Li and As do not relate to any known phase and Mn is present as a separate carbonate phase. Fe and a significant amount of the As exist in the pyrite that is dissolved in the HNO. Se is equally partitioned between the pyrite and the organic compound~. Most of the trace elements are found in the HF solutions. Li, V, and Cr were interpreted to be associated with the clay minerals (kaolinite and illite). Ni and Pb appear to be present as separate phases and 50% of the Hg is HF soluble but is not chemically related to any known inorganic phase.

The chemical and galvanic corrosion properties of commercially pure titanium, a titanium-manganese alloy, a titanium-aluminum-tin alloy, 2 titanium-copper alloys, and 2 titanium-aluminum alloys were studied. Tests were conducted in synthetic ocean water, tapwater, 1-percent sodium hydroxide, 5-percent ferric chloride, and 5-percent ammonium sulfate solutions, various concentrations of sulfuric and hydro-chloric acids, and 1-percent oxalic acid. All tests were carried out at 35° or 60° C., with a flow of air or helium. Dissimilar metals involved in galvanic-couples experiments were aluminum, magnesium, and stainless steel. Electrode-potential measurements on single (uncoupled) specimens were also measured. Commercially pure titanium and the titanium-base alloys were generally quite similar in their resistance to corrosion, whether alone or in. contact with a dissimilar metal. Contact with the titanium metals caused aluminum and magnesium to corrode by galvanic action. Coupling with stainless steel in sulfuric acid solutions decreased the normal corrosion rate of the titanium metals. Contact with aluminum in air-aerated oxalic acid and 0.1N sulfuric acid solutions resulted in cathodic corrosion of titanium and the titanium-base alloys; however, there were a few exceptions. The copper alloys showed better corrosion characteristics than titanium in certain sulfuric acid solutions but were more susceptible to chemical attack in some hydrochloric acid solutions.

According to the Bureau of Mines annual survey, there were 318 petroleum refineries in the United States with a total daily crude throughput capacity of 8,632,390 barrels as of January 1, 1956. Compared with the previous year the total number of refineries declined 8 while the crude throughput capacity increased 211,760 barrels daily. Three refinery districts accounted for 90 percent of the crude-oil capacity increase, the California district 34 percent; the Texas Gulf Coast district, 31 percent; and the Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky district, 25 percent. Decreases in capacity during the year were reported for the East Coast, Appalachian #1, and the Arkansas-Louisiana Inland districts. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1955 from 25.830 barrels daily to 27,145.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature of ash, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions~ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

This information circular describes a computer program called VARSAT2D, a comprehensive unsaturated fluid flow simulator developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. VARSAT2D solves for either a vertical or horizontal, transient or steady-state solution in variably saturated, heterogeneous, anisotropic porous media using the Galerkin finite-element approach. Simplex triangular elements are used. Moisture retention characteristics are described by specifying either the Brooks and Corey, Brutsaert, or Van Genuchten power functions, with hysteresis described using the Maulem independent domain model. Boundary conditions may include any combination of time-varying seepage, pressure along solution domain, boundaries and/or at internal node points, unit hydraulic gradient at the lower boundary, and a uniform source and/or sink. This program should be a welcome addition for mining and environmental hydrologists, researchers, and engineers interested in modeling unsaturated fluid flow.

A new process under development by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for producing synthetic rutile from ilmenite is described. Rutile formation is based on oxidation and fluxing of titania slag produced by electric furnacing of ilmenite. Laboratory tests show that phosphorus pentoxide flux additions to oxidized slag enhance conversion to rutile by forming a phosphate-based glass matrix. This matrix contains most of the major impurities, including the oxides of iron, aluminum, magnesium, manganese, and silicon. Rutile crystals of 5 to 150 microns in size were formed in slags heated to temperatures of 800° to 1,550° C. The synthetic rutile crystals were liberated from ground slag by treating with phosphoric acid to weaken the glass matrix, followed by attrition scrubbing. Rutile fractions analyzed as high as 94 percent titania content. In several instances, more than 90 percent of the titanium in the shag was recovered to yield combined rutile fractions containing 90.2 to 92.6 percent titania.

To aid the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in their Resource Development Navigation Study of ten existing or proposed port sites in Alaska, the Bureau of Mines examined the potential for mineral development around three Alaska port sites: Iliamna Bay, Kotzebue, and Nome. The mineral deposits near Iliamna Bay include gold, copper, and iron. Development of minerals in this area will require the discovery of new deposits or the definition of additional are reserves at known deposits. The mineral deposits near Kotzebue are primarily gold, copper, coal, lead, and uranium. Based on the character of these deposits, it appears that development of a small-scale mine supplying coal for regional use is the most likely scenario in the near-term. The mineral deposits near Nome are primarily gold and copper. Development of small underground gold mines is possible, however it appears that expanded offshore gold dredging will have the greatest impact on the flow of freight and goods through the Nome port in the near term.

This paper, describing the milling operations of the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Balmat, N. Y., is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on practice at various mills in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The company also operates a mine end mill at Edwards, 12 miles northeast of Balmat. Mining practice in the district, as exemplified at the Edwards mine, is described in another information circular of the Bureau of Mines.3 The writer gratefully acknowledges the generous cooperation of the company officials which made this investigation possible, and wishes to thank R. A mineral purvey of 40,000 acres of the 42,213-acre Little Humboldt River Wilderness Study Area was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. There are no identified mineral resources but anomalous gold, silver, mercury, and arsenic concentrations were found. The study area is located in Elko County, NV, in the Owyhee Upland geomorphic subprovince. It is underlain by mid- to late-Miocene-age rhyolite, basalt, tuff, vitric ash, and tuffaceous siltstone. On the south side and partly within the study area, a mining company recently (January 1986) located 125 contiguous claims over an area of hydrothermally-altered volcanic rocks that have anomalous surface concentrations of gold, mercury, arsenic, and silver. Anomalous gold-silver concentrations in altered rocks were encountered at several other widely scattered localities in the study area. These elevated metal concentrations and associated hydrothermal alteration indicate gold resources may be present in the study area. A 20-ft-thick bed of diatomaceous earth, which contains 60 to 85 percent diatoms, crops out 0.3 mi north of the study area. Elsewhere, three samples of altered volcanic tuff taken within the study area contain from 46 to 70 percent zeolite (clinoptilolite). The diatomaceous earth and zeolite sampled are not of sufficient quality to compete with materials presently being marketed. There has been no mineral production from the study area, but a caved adit, about 25 ft long, and six prospect pits were found.
