This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 299 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. All of the samples were collected during calendar year 1972 as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Fourteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,902 gas analyses prior to 1972. Percolation leaching of wad-type manganese ores was investigated, using a novel system of alternate upward passage of sulfur dioxide gas through moistened ore and downward percolation of wash solutions to extract solubilized manganese. Bench and large-scale tests designed to simulate vat and heap leaching were made on four wad ores from Arizona and Nevada and on a pailomelane ore from Arizona. Three of the wad ores required prebaking at 500° to 600° C. to produce a permeable agglomerate that would not slake during percolation washing. The hard-type ore and one of the wad ores that contained a large amount of granular gangue did not require prior roasting. The deportment of the different ores toward leaching and percolation was studied with particular reference to the influence of the sulfur dioxide - oxygen ratio and the effect of gas dilution on the rate of manganese dissolution, dithionate formation, and acid production. Crushed charges of the ores, as coarse as 1 inch and as fine as 1/4 inch, were treated for periods of 5 to 11 days. Percolation of the gas and leach solutions through the charges was achieved without difficulty. The manganese extractions varied between 78 and 97 percent and depended upon the size and type of ore leached. The average quantity of sulfur dioxide required in the larger scale tests was about 2.6 pounds per pound of manganese recovered. The dithionate formation varied from 0.35 to 0.9 pound per pound of manganese extracted depending upon the strength of leaching gas.

This paper is one of a series describing the mineral resources of the Nation, including location, history, production, ownership, geologic setting, and mining methods for most of the known manganese deposits in New Mexico, With few exceptions these descriptions are the result of field examinations by the writer. Of 32 counties, the 12 which occupy the western half of the State contain all the known manganese deposits, These counties are Catron, Dona Ana, Grant, Hidalgo, Luna, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Sierra, Socorro, San Juan, and Taos. "The various districts in the United States where complex lead-zinc ores occur are too well known to require description, there being hardly a mining State with any large amount of ores of either metal that is free from this problem. This paper briefly presents developments in the volatilization process, as applied to the treatment of such ores, since the data in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 211** were published. In that bulletin, among the many types of ore treated, examples are given of the treatment of lead-zinc ores by the chloride volatilization process for the separation of lead. An outline of the general process, with views of the rotary kiln, ore feeder, firing system (these three features resemble closely those of cement-kiln practice), dust chambers, and a Cottrell precipitator to remove the fume from the gas, are also shown in that bulletin, to which the reader is referred for the results obtained, and for practical details of operation. The small initial cost of a volatilization plant, and its adaptability for use in isolated districts were emphasized.In general, it was found that when an intensely oxidizing atmosphere was maintained in the furnace, a good lead-zinc separation could be made. Therefore, a heavy sulphide ore would have to be preroasted, and enough air would have to be admitted to obtain complete combustion of whatever fuel might be used.The work done by private companies and the bureau since the data for Bulletin 211 were obtained, indicates that the ores most immediately amenable to treatment by volatilization are of two types. The first is an oxidzed lead. silrer ore whose variable lime content makes it impractical to chloridize the ore for acidulated brine leaching, and whose base metal content makes treatment by cyanidattion unfeasible, The second type is the lead-zinc ore mentioned above, and is the one on which data are available for publication at present. This article Chows what ores of this latter type are amenable to treatment by volatilization, by giving briefly some of the more important physical and chemical properties an ore should preferably possess. Several examples are given from both laboratory experimental work, and from practice in the field, showing various phases of the volatilization process."

1. The 1952 Annual Report of the West Virginia Department of Mines lists nine beds that arc being mined in Logan County, of which the Cedar Grove and Chilton are the most important. The Cedar Grove group, No. 2 Gas, and Alma beds have the largest remaining reserves, in the order given. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 5,411 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 3,939 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimate reserves.

The average gravity of the total crude petroleum produced in the United States during; the year 1927 was 32.2° A. P. I., or 0.864 in terms of specific gravity. A similar study, made by the U. S. Geological Survey in 1921, gave the average gravity at that time as 32.0.° To one who is accustomed to thinking of crude petroleum in terms of Oklahoma-Kansas and North Texas trades it may be surprising that the average gravity for the entire country is no higher than 32.20. The chief reason for this apparent discrepancy lies mainly in California production, which in 1927 amounted to over 25 per cent of the total, but which had an average gravity of only 24.10. A factor of less importance was Arkansas, which, though on the decline as a producing State, exerted a material effect by reason of its average gravity of 21.6°, the lowest for any State. In view of the heavy production of light crude in the Seminole area of Oklahoma during 1927, it would appear that the average gravity should have shown more than a 0.2 per cent gain over 1921. That this did not occur was due to the fact that in the interim between 1921 and 1927 important heavy oil discoveries were redo, notably the Smackover field of Arkansas.

This Bureau of Mines publication presents an analysis of information related to the transportation of bituminous coal by unit trains and slurry pipelines. Even for short hauls from mines to markets, transport costs frequently account for between one-third and one-half of the delivered price of coal. Minimizing these costs has become an even more critical objective for hauls from the western mines than for hauls from farther east. Factors related to minimizing costs and transporting the western coal receive special attention. Although no general rule of preference is likely to be developed that can be applied to all shipments, both rail and pipeline service will be needed on an increasing scale. The study should provide useful background information and analysis for government and industry in approaching investment decisions in the mining and transportation industries.

The Bureau of Mines conducted experiments using bench-scale apparatus to explore the effect of large changes in process variables on the yield and composition of the gases produced by passing 800° C steam through a fixed bed of Pittsburgh seam (hvab) coal. The total yield of combustible gases increased throughout the given range for the following variables: Superficial steam velocity increasing from 0.02 to 0.12 fps, pressure increasing from 1,000 to 6,000 psig, residence time increasing from 0 to 60 minutes, and temperature increasing from 800° to 900° C; however, a greater increase in the yield of hydrogen in comparison with the increase in yield of methane reduced the gross heating value of the gas to around 470 Btu per scf at conditions giving the maximum yield. Pressures of 1,000, 3,000, and 6,000 psig at 0.09 fps steam velocity, 800° C, and 60 minutes residence time, respectively, produced methane yields of 20, 24, and 22 percent, based on maf coal, with the gross heating value of the CO2-free gas decreasing from 552 to 520 and to 470 Btu per scf. Methane concentrations in the CO2-free gas were 26, 22, and 14 percent, respectively. Based on the gross heating value of the coal, the percentage of the heating value recovered in the gas was 60, 71, and 87 percent, respectively. The use of tungsten sulfide as a catalyst for converting carbon oxides and hydrogen into methane was explored briefly using both a sulfur-free gas rich in methane and a sulfur-bearing synthesis gas (3H2:1CO).

The mining industry of the United States has long been severely criti- cized because of its high rate of accident occurrence, not only as compared with other industries of the United States but also with the mining industries of other countries, particularly Europe. Statistics, often not strictly com- parable, indicate that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident-severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. These fig- ures are by no means comforting to humanitarian mining men, irrespective of their status in the industry, and they constitute a challenge that certainly cannot continue to be ignored much longer. The picture becomes much darker when the above statistics are augmented with data indicating that on an exposure basis our mines (more particularly our coal mines) have accident rates two, three, or even more times as great as more or less similar mines in Europe, particularly England, Wales, Belgium, France, and Germany. The sting is alleviated to some extent by the knowledge that our coal mines produce about 4 to 5 times as much coal per man day as is produced in at least some European mines. However, all of these foreign acci- dent statistics should be analyzed carefully before we become very much con- cerned about them, because they are not strictly comparable, for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that foreign methods of compiling or recording accident statistics often differ materially from ours. Moreover, foreign mining and other conditions are definitely dissimilar to ours in many phases, and numerous other factors affect the comparability of foreign mine- accident statistics with those of the United States. Unquestionably, it should also be taken into consideration that the accident rate of the 140,000,000 or more constituting the populace of the United States as a whole is much higher than that of any other major country in the world and is two, three, or more times the rate of the European countries that have more favor- able mine-accident rates than those of the United States (table 1). Moreover, it is significant that the mine-accident-severity rate of British mines is about six times the average accident-severity rate of the major industries of the British Isles, or but little more favorable than the comparable figures in the United States; namely, that mining has an accident severity rate about seven times the average of about 30 of the major industries of this country.

This summary of State laws on explosives was compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and, in general, how they have been treated. It does not include any legislation passed after 1942, or any proclamations, regulations, or administrative orders. It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative. If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful in determining whether relevant statutes exist, and in locating them quickly with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of these jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a similar subject. To make these comparisons easier, the statutory provisions for each State have been grouped under several major topics in outline form. Although this sometimes has resulted in disruption of the continuity of individual acts, the increased general clarity and availability of comparable sections have more than justified the procedure followed.

"The first study of this subject has been made in Illinois, but as opportunity affords, similar studies will be made in other States. It is hoped that the data obtained will assist the coal—mining industry to standardise the forms of leases, and so avoid some of the abstruse and ambiguous clauses which may be found in many of then and the consequent liability of costly litigation.In some of the publications of the Illinois Mining Investigations prepared under a cooperative agreement with the U. Bureau of Mines, the Illinois State Geological Survey and the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois, the coal areas of the State have been dividedinto eight geological districts, each district being treated separately.report covers District No. VI of that classification, and it is hopedstudies of the other districts will be completed in the near future and similar results published.The report includes a short description of the geological condition the character and quality of the coal and the nature of the surface, data for which have been taken largely from the Illinois Geological Survey publications.Mining methods and percentages of recovery are mentioned, together physisal conditions, market and transportation facilities, because all of these factors have a bearing on royalties and leasing conditions."

The safety record of the mineral and mineral-fuel mining and processing industries in 1966 was improved slightly for the second consecutive year as indicated by reduced injury-frequency and injury-severity rates. The overall operating activity was higher in 1966, as measured by the increased number of men working and the total man-hours of worktime. Injury Experience.-The rate of occurrence of all disabling work injuries in the mineral industries was 17.38 per million man-hours in 1966. This overall rate comprised frequencies of 0.28 for fatal and 17.10 for nonfatal work injuries, compared with respective rates of 0.28 and 17.26 in 1965. Fatalities totaled 543; 5 more than in 1965. The total of 33.091 nonfatal injuries was 291 higher than in 1965. However, the larger number of disabilities was offset by the increased worktime in 1966. so that the fatality frequency was unchanged and the nonfatal frequency rate decreased from 1965.

This Bureau of Mines report compares the availability of federally owned minerals in Arizona with lands considered favorable for discovery of mineral resources, to deter-mine the extent to which Federal mineral lands in such areas have been withdrawn by legal action or restricted by management practice. Of particular concern are restraints on Federal lands in areas identified as highly favorable for occurrences of valuable mineral deposits. Excluding Indian lands held in trust by the Federal Government, about 32 million acres, 44%, of Arizona's mineral estate is federally owned. This total includes lands with partial Federal mineral ownership. Approximately 16.5 million acres, or 52% of these lands, are available for location or lease. This includes 496,000 acres, 62%, of the lands highly favorable, and 2.6 million acres, 57%, of the lands moderately favorable for locatable minerals in Arizona. All other Federal mineral lands are either withdrawn or restricted, reflecting a wide range of purpose, authority, and impacts on mineral exploration and development.

"INTRODUCTION The Denver region coal field, covering an area of approximately 7,640 square miles, extends from the Wyoming State line to the middle of El Paso County, Colo. The coal in this region is subbituminous in rank. Much of it is used as domestic fuel. During the last decade the production of coal in this field has remained fairly constant at an average of 2,600,000 tons per year. This production has come from 50 to 60 mines, 88 to 90 percent of the production being from the section of the field north of Denver.According to the Standard Specifications for Classification of Coal by Bank of the American Society for Testing Materials 4/ the coals in this region are classified in the Subbituminous B and C group. On the as—mined basis, they contain about 22 percent moisture and average 9,600 B.t.u. per pound. They are noncoking and slack to a variable extent when exposed to the weather. This is characteristic of subbituminous coals."

This paper describes in detail the cost of equipping and developing the Golden Belt mine, Yavapai County, Ariz. These costs should be typical of the average small gold mine in central Arizona which has been equipped with used machinery a, a minimum of capital expenditure. The conditions of remoteness, transportation, water, and power supply are about average for properties in the Bradshaw fountains and that vicinity. There are several mines in the district in the process of development and several dormant properties that might be opened in the future. The Golden Belt group of claims was taken over by the present management in May, 1931. Although some active development has been carried on in recent years, resumption of work at the old property required entire rehabilitation of the equipment and camp. As the water level had not been reached, there was no problem of dewatering. In the presentation of costs in this paper an evaluation of the cost of equipment and development work as taken over by the Golden Belt Mines, Inc., has been made. Enact data, however, on previous exploration and construction costs are lacking. The total cost of equipping and developing the mine to its present stage has been obtained by adding the disbursements of the present management to the above-mentioned evaluation. These costs do not include the cost of replacing camp, equipment destroyed by fires, of unsuccessful milling experiments, management, or obsolete equipment on the property.

"INTRODUCTION The need for an accurate and precise analytical method for determining moisture in coals of high water content has been recognized by the coal industry as well as the fuel technologist. Interest in this particular phase of coal technology extends back to the early work of German investigators on the brown coals of Central Europe. Studies by these workers led to the establishment of a direct immiscible liquid-distillation method 4/ as the accepted moisture determining technique in European laboratories. Direct moisture determining methods, those methods that utilize various techniques to drive off the water from a given sample of coal and either collect the water in a calibrated receiver or selectively trap the water driven off in a suitable absorber, have found little favor in the United States. They have been treated merely as research tools.5/ The problem of moisture determination in low-rank coals of the United States has not been given much consideration because such coals contribute only about 2 percent of the total United States production. With renewed activity in low-temperature carbonization and with the growth of interest in coal and coal-tar hydrogenation, the American coals of lover rank containing 20 to 40 percent bed moisture will be subjected to extensive investigation. If the low-rank coals of the United States are to be accurately appraised, the need for qualitative and quantitative analytical proceeded becomes more pronounced. These coals, especially the lignites of Texas and North Dakota, are highly susceptible to oxidation, a process that proceeds to a greater or less extort when low-rank, high-moisture coals are treated by oven-drying methods. The extent of this atmospheric oxidation has been described and evaluated by numerous workers. 7/In many respects, the problem of moisture determination in low-rank coals, those found in the United States and the high-moisture coals of Central Europe, is similar. Conversely, the problem of moisture determination assumes a different aspect when the coals of the eastern and the middle-west sections of the United States are considered. Present methods, the loss in weight gravimetic-type procedures, serve adequately to test these low-moisture coals. The determination of moisture in coals containing 20 to 40 percent water should be approached from a direct method rather than from an indirect gravimetic-type procedure because of the oxidative tendencies of these coals and the demonstratrated inability of a loss-in-weight technique to remove all the water in a given sample of coal."

This report is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines to describe methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Navajo Uranium Division of Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc., mines uranium from several deposits of carnotite-type ores, which lie buried in the Lukachukai Mountains on the Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache County, Ariz. The country is rugged and isolated Constructing and maintaining roads has been a continuous task. The ore bodies occur within the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation and are similar to other such deposits on the plateau. The current mining activity in the Lukachukai Mountains is a result of uranium-ore discoveries in 1949, although the Navajos undoubtedly knew of the outcrops of yellow uranium minerals long before that time. The ruggedness of the country and the heavy soil cover over much of the surface hampered prospecting, but probably the main reason the ore was not found sooner is that no one took the trouble to look for it in the Lukachukai Mountains.

Each winter brings its toll of deaths and serious accidents from the deadly gas, carbon monoxide. Newspapers carry warnings to the public of the dangers of this gas, and frequent now items retort the finding of persons dead or unconscious from the effects of carbon monoxide, yet these accidents continue. Either those warnings are not read, or they are unheeded by people who feel that "It can't happen to me." It can happen to you - carbon monoxide is no respecter of persons, as evidenced by items appearing daily in newspapers all over the country. Carbon monoxide has been a threat to human safety as long as man has used fire to keep himself warm and to cook his food. The burning of any fuel that contains carbon may produce carbon monoxide. This is true of solid fuels such as coal, coke, and wood; of liquid fuels such as oil, gasoline, and kerosene, and of gaseous fuels such as natural or manufactured gas. In the process of combustion the carbon in the fuel unites the chemically with tat oxygen of the air to form carbon dioxide (CO2), however, if the supply of air is not adequate, combustion is incomplete and carbon monoxide (CO) will be formed.

"In this report, we demonstrate that NF-KB, a ubiquitous transcription factor, plays an essential role in silica-induced inflammatory mediator production in the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7. Compared to the effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), silica mediated a stronger activation of NF-KB p50/p50 homodimer at early phase of poststimulation. Furthermore, activation of NF-xB by silica and LPS appears to be mediated by different signal transduction pathways. Both silica and LPS increased mRNA expression in these cells for cyclooxygenase II, inducible nitric oxide synthase, tumor necrosis factor-a and interleukin- I a. This expression was attenuated along with the inhibition of NF-KB activation. It is well documented that exposure of alveolar macrophages to silica can initiate excessive production of inflammatory mediators and cytokines from several early response genes (1-3). At the DNA level, a common structural characteristic of these genes is the presence of one to five NF-lCB binding sequences (KB) in the 5'-flanking region (4-6). In resting cells, NF-KB is retained in the cytoplasm in an inactive form by binding to inhibitory protein known as hcBcx, hcB~. p 105 (precursor of p50) and p 100 (precursor of p52) (7-9). Upon cellular stimulation, these inhibitory proteins are proteolytically degraded or processed by certain proteases, which allows the liberated NF-KB to translocate into the nucleus as an activated form to initiate or regulate early response gene transcription by binding to its consensus element (GGGRNNYYCC)(7).In this report, we demonstrate that silica can efficiently induce NF-lCB activation in RAW 264.7 cells, and that silica displays different characteristic from LPS in the activation of NF-KB, both with respect to NF-KB subtype composition and the signal transduction pathway that leads to the activation of NF-KB. In addition, abrogation of NF-KB activation by inhibiting the protease can dramatically reduce the mRNA expression of cyclooxygenase II, inducible nitric oxide synthase, tumor necrosis factor-ex (TNF-o.) and interleukin-lex (IL-lex). These findings strongly suggest that NF-KB plays an essential role in silica-induced inflammatory mediator production in the monocyte/ macrophage cells."

THE CRACKING AND POPPING of rock, often heard by men working underground, for years has been interpreted as a warning of danger and unstable ground. However, not until 1939 was it discovered that rock under stress generates subaudible and sometimes audible seismic disturbances (referred to as "micro-seismims" 4), which can be detected with the use of a suitable seismic apparatus. Since that date laboratory and field investigations have been in progress to ascertain to what extent this phenomenon can be utilized to detect, localize, and determine the magnitude of areas of instability in and around mine openings and to predict if and when failure will occur. These investigations have included a determination of the types of problems to which the method is applicable and the effect of rock type, geological defects, such as joints, fractures, faults, and other uncontrollable factors, on the reliability of results. Six reports have been prepared covering the investigations conducted between 1940 and 1952 (4-9). 5 These reports describe some of the characteristics of micro-seismims, as determined from both laboratory and field tests; the equipment used to pick up and record micro-seismims; the general test procedure and method of analyzing results; and applications of the method to specific mining problems.
