"INTRODUCTION Wood burned for commercial heat and power usually is waste material from some manufacturing process. The amount of it reaches substantial proportions. It is estimated that over 50 percent of the timber cut for lumber becomes ""waste"" in the process - sawdust, shavings, trimmings, slabs, and bark. Woodworking manufacturing processes also produce much waste. The incentive to use this waste has resulted in much development of wood-burning equipment to produce heat and power. To answer general inquiries received by the Bureau, this publication covering developments along these lines was written. Moisture is essentially always associated with wood. Green wood contains approximately 30 to 50 percent moisture; air-dried or seasoned wood contains 15 to 25 percent and kiln-dried about 8 percent. Exposed to the weather, wood absorbs and gives off moisture depending on weather conditions and water contact.""Dry"" wood ignites relatively quickly and readily gives off volatile matter when heated. Long flames and smoke easily occur during burning. The burning action is substantially retarded, however, by appreciable moisture content; ignition is more difficult. When the moisture content is more than about 70 percent, an auxiliary fuel is required to maintain combustion. One of the main factors in the problem of the satisfactory and smokeless combustion of wood is its moisture content."

"FOREWORDFerrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well known that there are large deposits of low-grade are in the United States, the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore depleted through inability to procure adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory,and pilot-plant investigation designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines.This paper is one of a new series that include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. The scope of the program and the organization that was set up to direct and supervise the were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series, Report of Investigations 3606 Manganese Investigations. 1. The data published in this report cover only one phase of a special study of the physical and chemical properties of Alabama coals made by the Bureau of Mines. In addition to determinations of friability, the survey included determinations of grindability, B.t.u. value, end ash-fusion temperature. Assay distillation tests, both for high- and low-temperature carbonization, and proximate and ultimate analyses were made also. However, this preliminary paper is concerned only with the results of friability tests and is issued to expedite the release of this information to the public. The friability test measures the liability of a coal to break into smaller pieces when subjected to repeated handling, as occurs in the mining, preparation, and transportation operations. Friability depends on many physical characteristics of the coal that vary not only between different seams but also in the same seam. The laboratory methods of determining friability have been developed to give a practical means of estimating degradation of size. So far as is known to the authors, no data on the friability of Alabama coals have ever been published. This paper makes available for the first tine fairly comprehensive information on this subject. Because the procedure for the tumbler test for determining the friability of coal is relatively new to the coal operators, the authors have included a complete description of it in this report.

The Federal Government, as the largest lessor of oil and gas lands in the United States, is vitally interested in the conservation of those resources. This manual has been prepared at the direction of the Secretary of the Interior to call the attention of lessees of public oil and gas lands to the most common oil and gas field wastes and the best methods of preventing them; to outline the policies of the Interior Department on field operations; and to give information as to how the "Operating Regulations" of the department will be interpreted by the Bureau of Mines. The oil industry has progressed steadily. Present operating methods are much more efficient-and less wasteful-than those of a few years ago; moreover, the art of producing oil and gas is continually advancing. Public interest requires that improved methods, which will result in obtaining the greatest possible amounts of oil and gas from the natural deposits, shall be developed and used. Part I of this manual points out types of oil and gas wastes and suggests, in detail or by reference, the most practical and effective methods in current practice for stopping these wastes. Throughout Part I the department's operating policy is given, with interpretations of the "Operating Regulations" for enforcing every practical measure of conservation. Part II comprises the revised "Operating Regula-tions" which supersede all previous regulations and will govern future operations on public lands; it will be found in the pocket in the back cover of this bulletin.

The objective of this contract was to provide thrust and torque control and visual output torque readout systems to an existing mine roof bolting machine and to test the consistency of torques obtained under actual field conditions. A Lee Norse TD1 roof bolter was modified by adding a simple torque sensing device to the drill rotation mechanism and a pneumatic logic control circuit that measures torque and controls the hydraulic circuit to the rotation motor. The modification controls and indicates the final installation torque of mine roof bolts. A total of over 5,000 mechanical roof bolts were installed in an operating coal mine. The installed torque of these bolts were within an error band (standard deviation) of 8%.

In 1988, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 34,310-acre Diablo Mountain (Additional) study area (OR-001-058), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources and occurrences. The study area lies along the east shore of saline Summer Lake in Lake County, OR, about 145 miles southeast of Bend and 45 miles northwest of Lakeview. The climate is semiarid and temperate, and the study area is almost treeless. Geologically, the (Additional) study area is in a region of fault block-formed mountains and basins, characterized by interior drainage. The area is mainly underlain by unconsolidated Quaternary and Pleistocene lake and playa sediments, which may include subsurface evaporite mineral deposits and resources. Near the center of the eastern margin of the study area are an occurrence of dolomitic limestone of unknown extent, and an area of basalt outcrop totaling 1.5 square miles. A veneer of windblown sand covers about one-half the study area.

"Steel tanks often corrode rapidly in oil fields where the Gas produced with crude contains an appreciable quantity of hydrogen sulphide. In many instances working tanks have been discarded after only six months of service because of failure induced by corrosion.Aluminum has been used for some time in the fabrication of certain equipment incidental to the handling of oils containing hydrogen sulphide gas in solution, and has exhibited no carious corrosive action. These uses indicated that aluminum tanks,be equally effective in counter- acting hydrogen sulphide corrosion. Consequently, in the spring of 1920, an all-aluminum stock tank of 500 barrels capacity and a ""composite"" tank of equal capacity, having a steel bottom and bottom ring and an aluminum top and top ring, were placed in service on the State-Lassiter lease of the Gulf Production Co, in Crane County, Tex. These tanks were under observation for one year, the toot being sponsored by the Gulf Production Co., the Aluminum Co. of America, and the Parkersburg Rig and Reel Co. The results of this preliminary test sustained the belief that aluminum is highly resistance to hydrogen sulphide gas and likewise indicated the type or grade of aluminum which could be most economically used for lease tankage. However, in this preliminary test the tanks were not subjected to contact with the quantities o highly concentrated brines such as often are associated and produced with crude oil. Therefore, it was suggested by representatives of the aluminum Co. that additional tests be made to include production conditions in large quantities of brine would be handled, for pact experience had shown that aluminum often is susceptible to the corrosive action of brines."

Volume II of this collection of research reports, entitled "Model Training Program," provides the framework and details for developing a tailored training program for a specific mine based upon documented human-performance deficiencies. To do this, several steps must be followed prior to program implementation: 1) background information must be gathered (database analysis), 2) direct observation of indicated problem areas should be conducted (safety sampling), and 3) separation of those deficiencies to be addressed through training from those which would be better addressed by workplace or equipment redesign (trainability assessment). Once training is determined to be the appropriate strategy for addressing the noted deficiencies, several approaches can be taken, depending upon whether the problem is related to repetitive work procedures in a predictable, a variable, or a dynamic workplace with a substantial amount of interaction between workers, equipment, and the environment. Although this volume and the subsequent seven volumes provide examples of how the training information was field tested using various strategies (for example, loss control, task training, etc.) and techniques (for example, microcomputer-based exercises, lectures, etc.), the ultimate selection of the delivery method is based on cost/benefit analysis. Therefore, the Model Training Program has incorporated a Training Cost Model as a desirable component.

This work was done to develop methods for increasing the yields and purity of vanadium prepared by bomb reduction of vanadium compounds . Compounds reduced were V₂ 05 , V203 , VC , and VC13 . Sodium , calcium , and magnesium were used as reductants . Variables considered included reductant form , bomb size , pressure during reaction , method of ignition , and the use of slag fluidizing additives . It was concluded that yields of 85 to 90 percent can be effected by the calcium reduction of V205 in reactors measuring as much as 14 inches in diameter and 60 inches in height . Optimum charge composition included V₂05 , 65 percent excess calcium , and 0.4 moles sulfur per mole vanadium . Purity of the vanadium produced in large reactors varied from 99.5 to 99.8 percent . The higher purity metal , depending upon the amounts of interstitial impurities present , was usually cold ductile . Although high yields of up to 99.5 percent can be effected by bomb reduction of VC1 , the high pressures developed in the bombs and attack of the reactor walls by the byproduct chloride slags discourages this method of preparing vanadium . It was found that significant purification of impure regulus metal occurred when it was hydrided , crushed , acid leached , and vacuum dehydrided . Metal so treated can readily be converted to ductile sheet . A cost estimate based on the production of 100 tons of vanadium per year was prepared . It was concluded that pure ductile vanadium could be produced for approximately $ 20.00 per pound .

"Although rock-dust is an effective and generally recognized preventive of wide-spread explosions in bituminous-coal mines and although in explosions many lives have been saved by its use that almost certainly would have been lost otherwise, yet more than two thirds of the yearly production of bituminous coal from underground mines in the United States is still being obtained from mines that do not use rock-dust, and more than two thirds of all men that work underground in bituminous mines are employed in nonrock-dusted mines. These facts are revealed by a statistical survey of all mines in the United States that were in operation during 1930, 1931, and 1932. The survey was conducted by the Demographical Division of the Health and Safety Branch of the United States Bureau of Mines and was based upon reports from operating companies received in connection with the Bureau's annual statistical surveys of accidents in the mining industry.In 1932, the latest year for which complete figures are available, rock-dust was used, to some extent at least, in 393 bituminous-coal mines whose total production of coal during the year was 83,632,327 tons, or 30.6 percent of the entire output of bituminous coal from all mines in the United States not including opencut mines. The number of men employed underground at mines that used rock-dust was 25.7 percent of the total number employed underground at all bituminous mines, and the number of man-hours worked at these mines was 27.1 percent of the total number of man-hours worked underground at all bituminous mines during the year."

Fibrous silicon carbide was produced by thermal decomposition of certain silicates contained in graphite crucibles. Induction heating was used to produce the necessary temperature and thermal gradients. Both green and white fibers were mainly the beta modification even though each color grew within a different temperature zone. Alpha silicon carbide, present in insufficient amounts for X-ray detection, was identified by electron diffraction. The white fibers formed in a zone between 1,365° and 1,634° C (±50° C). The green fibers (less contaminated) formed in a much more narrow zone between 1,650° and 1,672° C (±50° C). The average lengths and widths of microscopic fibers grown by this method were 1.5 mm/0.002 mm (white) and 1.2 mm/0.0035 mm (green); however, same fibers observed by electron microscope had cross-sectional measurements of 150 to 300 A. Both differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis showed that silicon carbide fibers oxidized in air at temperatures above 500° C. Fibrous silicon carbide was indexed as a cubic cell with the dimensions a = 4.358 A. The density calculated from X-ray data was 3.217 g/cm3.

"A relationship exists between the quartz contents in the underground coal nine airborne dust samples and those in the coal and host rocks that are mined [17, 18, 19] The prescribed method for quartz analysis in respirable airborne coal dust samples is the MSHA P-7 method. Accurate quartz analysis procedures are needed for bulk samples in order to predict the potential quartz content in airborne nine dust, which in turn will aid the design of quartz dust control procedures during mining. thereby reducing the airborne quartz dust in underground atmospheres. The requirements of this method are that the amount of quartz is the sample be less than 250ug, and the total sample weight less than 2,500 ug. Unlike with airborne dust samples, there are no limitations to the available mass of bulk samples. However, these are no standard procedures for the preparation of bulk samples for scanning or prescribed methods for quartz analysis. The NIOSH and MSHA methods are certified for roped* dust and the acceptance of these methods for bulk samples assumes that the bulk samples will be reduced to the conditions specified for respirable dust samples. An alternative method is X-ray diffraction, which provides higher average quartz values than those obtained from P-7 method for the same samples.An investigation was carried out to determine the optimal procedure for preparing the bulk samples for the IR and XRD analyses. In this paper, the investigations on the effects of calibration, particle sizes, matrix composition, interferrous, and behavior of the filter substances on IR, XRD and FTIR results are presented. The error introduced by the presence of kaolinite and a new sample asking procedure to reduce it are discussed. The problems experienced with conventional sample holders for scanning were eliminated with the design and development of a new hollow sample holder. Quantitative comparison of quartz determinations by IR, XRD and MR methods on coal, roof and floor rocks, and airborne dust samples are presented. The important factors affecting the results of quartz analysis methods are: 1) bulk sample preparation for obtaining representative and homogeneous analysis samples: 2) particle size distributions of the analysis samples and calibration standards; 3) qualitative matrix composition of the analysis sample; 4) matching calibration standards to analysis sample; 5) substrates for sample deposition during analysis sample preparation; 6) procedures for analysis sample mounting; 7) selection of proper portions of she response profile for insanity measurement; and 8) interferences of spurious phases with the critical analyses. The recommendations of this study are important to enable comparisons and interpretations of analysis and research results."

On 26 August 1971, the Bureau of Mines, through the Spokane Mining Research Center at Spokane, Washington, approved initiation of the evaluation of oscillatory energy toward enhancing flow of polymer into shale. The effort was an outgrowth of work performed under Bureau of Mines Contract H0210055, "Feasibility Study of Surface Impregnation equipment for the Chemical Stabilization of Coal Mine Structures," wherein feasibility of the impregnation concept was expressed and the detailed design of a machine for impregnation of coal mine roofs with polymer (under static pressure head) accomplished. Under these efforts, the potential enhance¬ment of polymer uptake into the shale thru superposition of oscillatory energy on the static impregnation pressure was suggested. A proposal for investigation of this phenomena entitled "Feasibility Study of the Application of Oscillatory Energy as an Aid to Afford Chemical Stabilization" was presented to the Bureau whereupon a three month program for initiation of investigation was approved.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study that incorporates coal mining factors, coal recovery factors, and economic factors into the definition of an economically recoverable coal resource. The relationship between these factors to the Energy Information Administration's estimate of U.S. coal resources-the "Demonstrated Reserve Base"-is discussed. The Boltsfork 7 1/2-minute quadrangle in eastern Kentucky was selected as the study area. Results indicate that of the original 280.2 M tons of resource in the quadrangle, only 99.8 M tons (35.6%) is recoverable at a mining cost of $25 per ton or less.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. In 1991 and 1992, the Bureau of Mines completed chromium, platinum-group metals (PGM), and tin investigations, and started indium, manganese, titanium, and vanadium investigations in Alaska. These studies were done as part of the Site Specific Minerals Investigations project. As a result of this work, the Bureau found PGM-bearing composite plutons in the Yentna River area of the Alaska Range, which are chemically similar to composite plutons in other parts of the Alaska Range and to Ural-Alaskan type complexes. Previously unknown chromium and PGM occurrences were found in the western Brooks Range. A compilation report on the Bureau's chromium and PGM investigations in the western Brooks Range was also published. Indium was found in anomalous concentrations at the Lost River tin deposit. Small occurrences of manganese were located, mapped, and sampled in the Wiseman and Chandalar quadrangles, and in the Liberty Falls, Prince William Sound, and Homer areas. Tin occurrences in western Alaska were summarized in three Bureau open file reports. The beaches near Cape Yakataga and Yakutat were evaluated for their titanium potential and a sampling methodology was developed. Vanadium investigations included examining streams in the Wiseman and Eagle areas that contained anomalous vanadium values. In the Eagle area, high vanadium, uranium, and copper values were found in the basal layers of the Road River formation.
