The critical importance of wire rope integrity to the mining industry has led to the creation of standards for the retirement of wire rope as well as to the development of electromagnetic devices and procedures that would allow wire ropes to be tested against these standards without destroying them, The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted research to evaluate these devices by measuring loss of metallic cross-sectional area and the number of wire breaks, or local faults. The intent was to define the extent to which the technique can identify degradation within the rope, e.g., broken wires, corrosion, and wear. Experimental results showed that instrument sensitivity depended on a number of factors, including rope diameter, placement of sensors, location and characteristics of flaws, rope speed, and tension on the rope. The experiments also demonstrated the importance of having an elongated recorder trace and a properly trained and experienced operator to interpret overall results. A design of a rope and test procedures for use in laboratory evaluation of instruments have been recommended by the American Society for Testing and Materials Committee E07.07.10, Wire Rope Applications. The USBM is working through this committee to develop standards for an electro-magnetic method of wire rope inspection.

A computer program was written for the design of a shell and tube type heat exchanger on a price optimum basis. The program was designed to meet the following requirements: (1) Triangular pitch; (2) single or multiple pass; (3) heating or cooling; and (4) no change in phase. Price optimum design was obtained for four standard tube sizes and standard pitch. Pressure drop both inside and outside were computed and the nearest standard shells having at least the required area were listed. With this information, the estimator can select the heat exchanger best suited for the need. The program was made adaptable to various fluids and to various tube sizes and spacing by reading in much of the required data such as physical properties of the fluids, tube data, and standard shell data in tabular form.

The Bureau of Mines conducted bench-scale cyclic tests to determine the composition of recycled leach liquor in the Bureau?s proposed clay/HCl leach/ HCl sparge process for producing Al203 from clay. The data developed from these tests make it possible to synthesize leach liquors for predetermined steady-state operating conditions when conducting large-scale crystallization tests. The results of two sparge tests were compared. One was a 20-cycle test with a 36-pct-HCl concentration in the mother liquor; the other was a 10-cycle test with a 26-pct-HCl concentration in the mother liquor. The effect of impurity concentrations in the leach liquor on the purity of aluminum chloride (AlCl30?6H20) crystals was determined, but there was poor correlation between this data and results that have been obtained from miniplant-scale work.

Outside air for ventilating coal mines in Alabama varies considerably in both temperature and moisture content during the year. Alternate condensation and evaporation of the moisture on mine roofs may result in stresses detrimental to the strength of mine roof. It is well known that the clays in shales absorb moisture, and many investigations have noted the weakening of shales by absorption of moisture. Parker (1970) concluded that there is an annual cycle of rock deterioration in mine roof rock caused by the annual temperature-humidity cycle at the surface. He further noted that moisture reduces the strength of dry rock by one-half, that moisture added to dry rock can cause failure in compression, and that drying of wet rock causes tensile stress buildups by shrinkage. His recommendations for alleviating the moisture-temperature problem was to seal the rock in critical areas and to control ventilation so that air temperature will be lower than rock temperature. The latter recommendation will avoid condensation on the rock surfaces. Hartmann and Greenwald (1941) published the results of a very comprehensive experimental project to determine the effect of temperature and humidity changes on the behavior of mine roof. Their general conclusions included statements that roof rocks were very sensitive to moisture changes, but had low coefficients of thermal expansion. A comprehensive research program designed to aid development of new and improved methods for more complete production of petroleum from partly depleted reservoirs is being conducted at the Bureau of Mines Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla. Water flooding has accounted for much of the petroleum produced by secondary-recovery methods; however, a considerable portion of the crude oil commonly remains in place after water flooding has been terminated. In recent years the possibility of increasing the efficiency of water flooding by using surface-active additives has received wide attention. In general, the results of laboratory research have shown that use of detergents as water-flooding additives will reduce the residual petroleum in porous media (1).3/ Some less extensive field tests have supported this conclusion but have not been entirely conclusive (2). Later studies (3, 4) have given conflicting evidence as to the relative worth of detergent additives for water floods in water-wet (hydrophilic) or oil-wet (hydrophobic or lipophilic) reservoir materials. The results of these studies emphasize the need for a more complete understanding of the fundamental principles involved in displacing petroleum from reservoir surfaces by injected fluids. Accordingly, a comprehensive research program was initiated to investigate the practical and fundamental aspects of detergency in petroleum production.

[Sales of explosives - permissible explosives5/ other high explosives, and black blasting powder - in the United States during the calendar year 1937 reached a combined total that slightly exceeded the quantity sold in 1936. A larger output was reported for permissible and other high explosives but a smaller for black powder. Production of the three classes of explosives totaled 404,744,294 pounds, more than 3 percent over 1336. The total quantity produced included 49,579,441 pounds of permissible, 288,924,253 pounds of other high ex- plosives, 36,403,950 pounds of black powder in pellet form, and 23,836,550 pounds of black powder in granular form. Sales of granular black powder declined 26 percent compared with 1936 and of pellet black powder 12 percent; gales of permissible explosives increased nearly 4 percent and of other high explosives 10 percent]

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has tested cyanide leaching for recovery of palladium (Pd) from spent petroleum processing catalysts. Three different catalyst samples were supplied by a spent-catalyst processor. These catalysts consisted of a zeolite base and contained 0.4 to 0.7 pct Pd. During alkaline cyanide leaching, the catalysts exhibited ion-exchange properties due to their zeolite matrices. Hydrogen ions were released from the zeolite in exchange for sodium ions in solution, resulting in a significant decrease in solution pH. This could present a safety hazard because of the potential for release of toxic hydrogen cyanide gas. A pretreatment step where the catalysts were contacted with a 1.0M sodium hydroxide solution was found to prevent the pH shift from occurring. Following the sodium hydroxide pretreatment, two stages of leaching at 160 °C with solution containing 1 pct sodium cyanide and 0.1[M] sodium hydroxide gave at least 75 and up to 95 pct Pd recovery. The Pd was quantitatively recovered from the leach solution by thermal decomposition in an autoclave at 250°C for 1 h. The Pd content of the precipitate was over 50 pct. Thermal decomposition also decreased the total cyanide content of the barren solution to less than 0.2 mg/L. The catalyst leach residues passed the Federal Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure and the California Waste Extraction Test, indicating that landfill disposal of the leach residues would be acceptable.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the effect of ground water control on the dewatering of phosphatic clay wastes. Two storage impoundments were constructed. One impoundment was surrounded on three sides with a series of well points (shallow vertical wells) to lower the ambient water table and the second impoundment served as a control. Ground water was pumped from the area surrounding the test impoundment for a period of 490 days. A constant pumping rate of 60 gal/min resulted in a water table drawdown of 13 ft, approximating the bottom of the impoundment. At the end of the test period percent solids in the test impoundment was 35 pct, while in the control impoundment percent solids was only 26.8 pct. Percent solids of greater than 30 pct is required for capping and final reclamation using fertile overburden.

This report summarizes the results of research into the areas of the fragmentation and entrainment of Airborne Respirable Dust (ARD). The objectives of this program were four-fold: first, to review the present state of knowledge regarding ARD; second, to expand this state of knowledge through the identification of hypothetical microscopic mechanisms by which the coal is fragmented and the dust becomes entrained; third, to specify the informational requirements to verify or nullify these hypotheses; and fourth, to relate experimental techniques that will produce that required information. Additionally, insights are provided regarding potential methods of extraction and/or treatment which may reduce the concentration of ARD.

This digest, based upon a translation" of certain portions of the 1930 law, covers the pertinent points of what has been termed "The New Mining Law of Luxemburg," the Grand Ducal Order (Arrêté) of April 26, 1930, concerning the exploitation of "mines, minières, and carrières, 4 and abrogating the order of January 2, 1891, concerning the same subject." The Duchy of Luxemburg, which between 1735 and 1815 was French, adopted as its basic mining law the French Law of April 21, 1810, and an Imperial Decree of January 3, 1813. The Luxemburg Government later supplemented and modified this legislation by the laws of June 12, 1874, April 30, 1890, and May 10, 1898, which, with article 36 of the Constitution, are to be taken into consideration in a complete survey of mining legislation. The Bureau of Mines studied factors affecting ignition of coal mine refuse and on methods for control of burning. Laboratory experiments showed that air permeates more readily through segregated than through nonsegregated refuse and that air permeability is greater through coarse than through fine particle refuse. Minus 3-1/4-inch refuse ignites spontaneously more readily than minus 1/4-inch refuse. The burning of a 1,000-pound conical coal pile was con-trolled by capping with an 18-inch-thick layer of minus 1/4-inch refuse containing 37 percent combustible. In field trials, the burning of refuse at operating mines was controlled by capping with a layer of fine refuse. Water, applied as a spray or by injection, quenched surface flames and cooled the burning waste. Inspection of refuse piles at operating mines showed that the spontaneous ignition tendency is affected by the exposed surface relative to the total volume and the segregation of particles during dumping.

This work was conducted to determine the feasibility of producing aluminum-silicon alloys in a pit-type, three-phase electric-arc furnace. Two carbon-lined furnaces were used in the tests. The power input ranged from 120 to 240 kw. in the small furnace and from 420 to 460 kw. in the large furnace. Energy consumption ranged from 5.3 to 11.5 kw.-hr. per pound of alloy produced and electrode consumption, from 240 to 510 pounds per ton of alloy produced. A wide range of crude aluminum-silicon alloys was produced by direct smelting of clays or similar aluminum silicate raw materials, using hogged fuel or wood chips as the major source of carbon in the furnace charge, and silicon of high grade was produced by smelting quartz. The aluminum content of the aluminum-silicon alloys ranged from 15 to 55 percent. Alloys produced from a white opaline-silicate clay were relatively free of iron, titanium, and other impurities. Those produced from western fire clays and kyanite, although richer in aluminum, contained considerable amounts of impurities. The purity of the alloys depended largely on the composition of the raw materials.

[The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coals, functioning under the sponsorship of the American Society for Testing Materials and the rules of the American Standards Association, in its 1934 report recommended to the American Society for Testing-Materials that Specifications for Classification of Coals by Rank be adopted as tentative. These specifications, slightly modified as recommended by the Sectional Committee, in its 1935 report,6 wore approved as tentative standards by the society in 1935. The specifications rover the classification of coals according; to their degree of metamorphism, or progressive alteration, in the natural eerie s from lignite to anthracite. The basic scheme of classification is according to fired carbon and calorific value (expressed in B.t.u.) calculated to the mineral-matter-free basis. The higher-rank coals are classified according to fixed carbon on the dry basis, and the lower-rank coals according to B.t.u. on the moist basis, that is, containing its natural bed moisture but free of visible surface moisture. This report of a petroleum-engineering study of the Flat Rock oil field, Osage County, Okla., describes the geology, reviews the production history, and estimates remaining oil reserves. The Flat Rock field in the southeastern corner of Osage County approximately 6 miles northwest of Tulsa. Okla., was discovered in November 1904. The field was one of the first of many Bartlesville-sand fields developed in eastern Osage County during the early part of the 20th century. Although substantial oil reserves remain in the pressure depleted sands in some parts of the field, their economic recovery by water flooding will require careful consideration of the many factors involved.

The art of treating ores by the chloride volatilization process is still in the experimental stage. The process has not been sufficiently developed along metallurgical lines to warrant a definite statement as to the exact place it will occupy in the industry. The basic theory of the process has received the attention of prominent metallurgists for 20 years, and considerable research and experimental work have been carried on. Much of the experimental work done has never been published; if the accumulated results were made known, they would greatly aid,. the further development of the process. This bulletin aim~ to bring the salient features of the process to the attention of metallurgists for the purpose of furnishing information to and receiving comments from interested parties with the ultimate hope that the process will be a commercial success. If commercially utilized, the process will fill a long-felt want in metallurgy, especially in the treatment of oxidized and semioxidized or" carbonate" ores of copper, lead, and silver. Such ores are difficult to treat by gravity concentration or by flotation: in the former their tendency to slime upon crushing and their being of lower specific gravity than the sulphide minerals cause serious losses; in the latter much has been done in sulphidizing oxidized ores and subsequently recovering the artificial sulphides by flotation. Difficulties in proper sulphidizing and the low recoveries obtained have not balanced the cost of the treatment in many plants and in very few has it proved successful. Evidently there is a big void to fill in the treatment of these ores. No radical changes in present methods are forecast, but it is obvious that chloride volatilization can have a distinct place as a method of treatment for ores that are not readily amenable to present methods. In many plants it might replace concentration methods, especially where part of the mineral content in the ores exists in forms other than sulphides.

The effect of load rate on the load-carrying capabilities of wood cribs is investigated in this Bureau of Mines study. The modulus of deformation (stiffness) of wood crib blocks has been shown to increase with increases in rates of load application, causing larger load reactions for increases in convergence rates. Since wood cribs are tested in the laboratory at convergence rates that are orders of magnitude faster than typically would occur underground, wood cribs tested in the laboratory will react larger loads than the same cribs would react underground for the same displacement. Tests conducted in the Bureau's mine roof simulator on green wood crib blocks indicate that the increase in stiffness for increasing load rates diminishes at displacement rates beyond 0.1 in/min, making crib load nearly independent of load rate for rates faster than 0.1 in/min. Seasoned wood specimens were not as con-sistent in load-rate dependency. Some possible explanations of observed load-rate behavior on wood crib specimens are also postulated in this paper.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing gypsum mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation so that there may be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation. This paper deals specifically with the mining and crushing methods employed by Victor Plaster, Inc., Victor, Ontario County, N. Y. The maximum annual production capacity of this company is 150,000 tons of crushed gypsum. The methods and practices employed arc typical of those followed in the gypsum mines in western New York State. The shaft is, perhaps, the deepest and the thickness of the gypsum mined is above the average for the section.

"INTRODUCTION The Treasure Hill mines, situated in Dry Canyon, Ophir mining district, Tooele County, Utah, together with several other properties in the district, examined were examined by Frank L. Wideman, an engineer, the Bureau of Mines, in September 1942.In April 1945, development drilling was started on the Treasure Hill mines, which are operated under lease from the Madison Mines Co. Discovery of these unusual fluorite deposits was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines late in 1951, shortly after the first locations were made. A brief investigation of the deposits by the Bureau revealed seven principal outcrops of fluorite in two areas. The smallest outcrop continuously exposes massive fluorite over an area 25 by 55 feet; the largest outcrop is a similar exposure 180 by 240 feet. The deposits appear to be sharp-walled, low-angle-, tabular ore bodies in granite and are at least 10 feet thick. The Bureau investigation of the deposits included bulldozer strip-trenching, drilling and blasting rock cuts, and channel sampling across three of the largest outcrops. This sampling indicated an average grade of 97.2 percent CaF2 and 1.44 percent SiO2. Preliminary metallurgical tests on the ore indicate that it can be concentrated to acid-grade specifications by simple gravity methods. One laboratory test recovered 78.4 percent of the fluorite in a product containing 98.7 percent CaF2, 0.25 percent SiO2, and 0.10 percent Fe2O3.
