About a century ago Bunsen and his associates invented the famous burner that bears his name and was to become the ancestor of today's gas appliances. Over the years, Bunsen's invention became the starting point of a highly developed, practical technology that culminated in the gas industry as we now know it. However, it did not occur to the early workers to investigate the scientific potentialities of the new device, and as a result the science of gas-burner performance did not keep pace with the growing industry. It was with the objective of closing the rapidly widening gap between science and technology that the present research was undertaken Its immediate purpose was to provide basic information on the combustion characteristics of .fuel gases, in particular as they affect flashback, blowoff, and yellow tipping. Information obtained in the present research and contained within this report consists of the following: (1) Fundamental flashback and blowoff characteristics have been determined, it is believed, for all fuel-gas mixtures in which the gas industry may be interested. These are critical boundary velocity gradients for flames in free air, on burners with ports at room temperature and pressure. Burner aeration is characterized by the parameter, fraction of stoichiometric. These basic limits are explained, values are presented, and calculation procedure is given for deriving corresponding values of port loading and percent primary air (chs. I and II).

Reduce the cost of modifying uranium well casings so that leaching solutions can pass through, but sand grains are blocked. Approach The well casing and surrounding cement are perforated at the mineralized zone by impinging them with high pressure water jets. How It Works A nozzle assembly is attached to a high pressure (15,000 psi) pipe and lowered into the well casing which typically is schedule 40 PVC (poly-vinyl chloride). The high pressure pipe line is extended down Into the casing until it reaches the mineralized zone. The upper end of the pipeline is then connected by a high pressure hose to the outlet of a 10,000 psi pump. Turning the pump on for 5 seconds causes a high velocity water jet to cut through the well casing and the surrounding cement. Figure 1 shows a high pressure pipe being installed in a well casing. Cutting small diameter holes in the casing allows the leachant to enter the casing and be pumped to the surface. However, the holes are small enough to prevent most sand grains from entering. Numerous holes are usually cut through the casing. The 3-nozzle assembly shown in Figure 2 cuts three holes, one above another.

This report documents the three-phase program to design, fabricate, test, and demonstrate economical and practical methods of reducing noise levels on underground coal mining portal buses (mantrip vehicles). The noise-control treatments applied to a production-model portal bus were as follows: ? Wheel/rail vibrations were isolated from the vehicle frame by inserting elastomeric materials between suspension components. ? Vibration-induced noise was reduced by replacing all large sheet metal panels (except floor plates) with damped steel panels. ? Motor noise was reduced by tight-fitting covers made from damped steel and lined with sound-absorbing material, and by elastomeric motor mounts. ? The standard spur gears used in the traction drive system were replaced with helical gearsets. The program achieved the goal of reducing the average sound-level to below 85 dBA for typical operating conditions.

"INTRODUCTION The Mineral Ridge-Clay Lick fault system in Crittenden and Livingston Counties, Kentucky, is one of the larger and more important fault systems of the Western Kentucky Fluorspar district. Total production from it up to July 1945 (chiefly since 1900) was approximately 80,000 tons of fluorspar ore, 10,000 tons of which came from the Mineral Ridge Fluorspar Co. tract 1, which was being operated by the Mahoning Mining Co. of Rosiclare, Ill. The fluorspar ore carries lead and zinc that can be recovered by milling, and the Mahoning Co. planned to log-wash the ore at the mine and then mill it in its mill at Rosiclare, The Mineral Ridge Fluorspar Co. properties were examined by O. M. Bishop, an engineer of the, Bureau of Mines, in August 1942. During 1943 and 1314, developments on the properties were under observation by X. B. Starnes, of the Bureau, and it was decided to diamond-drill tracts 1 and 2, as indications seemed favorable for opening up additional fluorspar ore bodies. Drilling was begun March 12, 1945, and was completed July 2, 1945, during which time 12 holed were drilled on tract 1 of the Mahoning Co.'s leases for a total of 3,637.1 feet, and one hole 359 feet deep was drilled on tract 2 of the Jennings lease. The Mineral Ridge-Clay Lick fault system, 4 to 47 feet wide, was encountered in all holes at 126 to 265 feet."

This paper summarizes the development of a furnace for producing titanium castings. The general problem is outlined and chronological details are given on the construction and operation of four different casting furnaces, all utilizing consumable-electrode arc heating and water-cooled copper crucibles. Of the two methods of pouring, the tilt-pour technique has been more satisfactory than bottom tapping. Mold design, electrode fabrication, and deep-pool production are discussed. INTRODUCTION In the early summer of 1953 the Bureau of Mines was contacted by the Department of the Army through Watertown Arsenal to explore the possibility of conducting research on casting titanium metal. The objective of the program was "to develop a technique for producing formed castings of titanium metal not less than 40 pounds in weight and without introduction of deleterious contamination."

Metal-mine fires in the United States are not of frequent occurrence and relatively for of those that do occur result in loss of life, although many cause heavy property loss or are costly to extinguish. Over a span of years, however, more lives are lost in metal Trines from fires than from any other of the untoward occurrences which afflict metal mining, such as electrical storms, floods, cave-ins, magazine explosions, or strikes. In perhaps more than 90 per cent of the fires. in metal mines' there is no loss of life; hence, the general public, even the general mining public, seldom hears of these fires, though the property loss frequently reaches hundreds of thousands of dollars; on the other end, in some instances the property damage from an underground metal-mine, fire has been negligible and the loss of life comparatively high. In any comprehensive study of metal-mine fires, ventilation is certain to be found a vital factor. The influence of ventilation on fires and the influence of fires on ventilation are of vital importance. In metal-mine fires very few persons meet death from actual contact Pith heat or flame; nearly all fatalities are duo to asphyxiation or suffocation. A well-planned, well-installed, and well-operated mechanical ventilation system is unquestionably one of the best available present-day protections from loss of life and property in case of fire in a metal mine; that this is true is attested by the usual helplessness of mining officials in trying to handled underground fires in a mine that has not had the foresight to install mechanical equipment to control underground air flow. On the other hand, the establishment of high-velocity air currents without sufficient day by day attention to such details as the method of coursing, or controlling, or confining them most certainly tends to increase dangers from fires rather than to aid in the avoidance or elimination of these dangers; the truth of this latter statement is shown by the fact that the greatest, loss of life in metal-mine fires during the past 20 years has been in relatively well-ventilated workings, and in every case the life loss has been due to some more or less trivial or easily remedied defect in the Ventilating system - usually a defect that has had some reference to doors used or supposed to be used to deflect or control air currents.

The fluorescence of many minerals, when excited by different wave lengths, of ultraviolet radiation, has long been recognized as a spectacular laboratory phenomenon. Since the original display in the British Museum, the phenomenon has been used frequently for educational purposes and public demonstrations. Its practical application for the rapid detection of certain minerals in ores and mill products at the zinc mine at Franklin, N. J., has been described.3 Due to technical improvements in ultraviolet-radiation apparatus, fluorescence has found a new field of application in the tungsten-minim; industry. Although fluorescence of scheelite (calcium tungstate) has been known for a number of years, the practical application of the phenomenon is the outgrowth of a program of cooperative research conducted by Ott F. Heizer, manager of the Nevada-Massachusetts Co., Inc. , Mill City, Nev., and Dr. Paul F. Kerr of Columbia University. Special portable lights for fluorescing scheelite have been developed and utilized in underground geological work. Thanks are due Ott F. Heizer for permission to publish data included in this paper.

The mining methods and practices used at the Young zinc mine, American Zinc Co. of Tennessee, have resulted in a low-cost, high-yield operation. Zinc ore (sphalerite) occurs in limestone-dolomite beds of the Kingsport Formation and is mined by modified room and pillar method. Utilizing trackless mining equipment which incorporates a high degree of flexibility, this operation has had a steady increase in productivity.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the current literature on the use of calcium chloride and ligninsulfonates as dust suppressants with respect to potential adverse effects on health or the environment. Calcium chloride poses little internal hazard to man and animals, but toxicity to vegetation in and around the area of application should be expected. The effects, however, should be considerably less than those observed from using calcium chloride as a road deicer. Except for trout, ligninsulfonates seem to pose little direct systemic toxicity problems in aquatic organisms, animals and man or any problem with local vegetation. Because of a greater volume of information on its use and effects, calcium chloride is recommended over ligninsulfonates.

To aid in winning the recent world war, the Bureau of Mines conducted a National Fuel Efficiency Program, directed to commercial plants throughout the Nation, to save greatly needed fuel, a basic resource vital to industrial production. In planning this program it was realized that to accomplish a satisfactory reduction in fuel consumption in any plant, it would be necessary to reach, enthuse, and usually educate to some extent the actual operators of the various types of plant equipment. A major part of the programs consisted, therefore, of visits to plants and work with the operators, including a review with them of their operating conditions and of educational and guiding literature pertinent to the operating problems involved. Through a Nation-wide organization, local volunteer engineers served in making visits to local plants. Each cooperating plant appointed an employee as the "waste chaser," who headed the work of saving fuel in that plant. The educational literature was designed to interest the operator, as well as serve as a guide in eliminating waste of fuel. Volumes have been written on many subjects relating to the saving of fuel. Writings of the treatise type contain considerable good information but do not have wide appeal and probably will be read only by a few studious operators. The problem is not one of getting clown on paper everything that the experts know and would like to have the operator know, but rather to write something that will actually interest the operator and stimulate him to action. Past experience led to the adoption, therefore, of the "quiz-sheet" type of writing, using a quiz sheet of not more than two pages for any principal item. The results obtained during the National Fuel Efficiency Program in many types of plants further demonstrated that the short quiz sheet is satisfactorily appropriate and does accomplish results. The objective of this contract was to monitor operating conditions of, four flooded, fibrous-bed filter panels used during normal underground mining operation and to analyse clogging and structural problems. After observing structural and clogging problems and conducting laboratory and field tests, a final, Flooded, fibrous-bed filter design which minimizes clogging and structural problems was recommended to the Bureau of Mines. This report also describes the dust sampling procedures used to determine the dust concentration at the flooded, fibrous-bed scrubber intake duct.

"The pressures produced by dust explosions are frequently so great and are developed so rapidly that widespread destruction of manufacturing equipment and buildings results. Experimental data on maximum pressures and rates of pressure rise produced in a closed vessel by numerous metal powders and by dusts used in the plastics industry were published in two previous Bureau of Mines papers.4/5/One means for reducing structural damage is provision in the enclosing walls and/or roof of rapidly opening explosion-relieving devices or relief vents through which the pressure of an incipient dust explosion can be quickly dissipated. The vents can be simply unrestricted or free openings: hinged or pivoted sash which swing outward at a predetermined internal pressure; fixed sash, with light wall anchorages; scored glass panes; light wall panels; monitors or skylights; poppet-type vent closures; paper, metal foil, or other diaphragms that burst at low pressures; pull-out diaphragms, or other similar arrangements.The use of pressure-relief vents is recommended in the dust-explosion codes of the rational Fire Protection Association,6/ and recently a special committee on explosion venting has been organized. However, technical data on which the design and distribution of relief vents can be based are meager. An experimental study on venting grain-dust and cornstarch explosions was made by the Bureau of Chemistry and Soils, United States Department of Agriculture.7/ Tests on cork fines, cinnamon, starch, barley dust, and a phenolic plastic were made in a laboratory-scale (0.1-cubic-foot) apparatus by the engineering department of the Factory Insurance Association.8/ A study on the venting of explosions of acetone-air mixtures was made by the Bureau of Mines.9/The object of the present investigation is to extend the limited knowledge on the effectiveness of pressure-relief vents of different types, shapes, and sizes. The aim is to determine the venting requirements in equipment and structures of various dimensions and shapes for dusts of widely different explosive properties. On the basis of such accumulated information, together with theoretical considerations, it is hoped that ultimately it will be possible to recommend correct venting for most operations in which a dust-explosion hazard exists."

The areas of investigation that each organization is engaged in are indicated in broad terms: Analysis and constitution, mining and geology, preparation, briquetting, combustion, high-and low-temperature carbonization, gasification, conversion to solid and liquid fuels, and health and safety. Publications issued by and describing the work of each organization are cited; almost all of the organizations also publish results of their investigations in the technical press. Square Butte has no history of mineral development or production. Surface mapping, radiometric surveys and chemical analyses of rock samples reveal no mineral potential. The area has a speculative potential for petroleum and natural gas. INTRODUCTION The Square Butte Instant Wilderness Study Area, in Chouteau County, Montana, consists of 1,946 acres (788 ha) about 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Fort Benton and 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Lewistown (fig. 1). This study was performed under provisions of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Public Law 94-579, October 21, 1976), in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey, which is responsible for regional geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, which determines the mineral potential of existing mines, prospects, or mineralized areas.

[During the past year the Metallurgical Fundamentals Section gave about an equal amount of time to the experimental determination of fundamental thermodynamic constants and to the demonstration of the application of such data to more directly practical metallurgical problems. The first division of the work - the actual experimental measurements of typical thermodynamic constants - was carried out an two problems, termed ?continuing? programs, namely, (1) measurements of Specific Heats at Low Temperatures and (2) Measurements of Heats of Formation and Free Energies. Specific substances chosen for investigation are classified as (n) those that have been the subject of requests for information from the industry and that, upon examination, seem of sufficient practical importance to justify study, and (b) compounds that are difficult to treat metallurgically, or whose specific thermodynamic properties have not yet been determined satisfactorily and for which accurate data might suggest improved or new methods of Metallurgical treatment, or (c) materials recognized as belonging to a social class with exceptional thermodynamic properties and, hence, of scientific as well as technical importance.]
