A kinetic study of the carbon deposition reaction was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as part of a broad investigation of metallurgical reactions in the iron ore blast furnace. The disproportionation of carbon monoxide on iron pellets was investigated at carbon monoxide pressures between 0.5 and 2 atmospheres (absolute) and temperatures from 400° to 1,075° C. Gas flow in the range from 0.25 to 0.85 standard liter per minute was found to have little effect on the reaction velocity. The addition of nitrogen and helium to caron monoxide exerted only a dilution effect on the rate of carbon deposition. However, an addition of 1 percent hydrogen increased the rate about 100 times. Small amounts of carbon dioxide in the inlet gas exerted little effect on the rate of carbon deposition. The maximum rate for carbon deposition in the first 2 hours occurred at 550° C. The apparent molar activation energies at various stages of the reaction were found to vary from 13 kcal initially to 36 kcal during the latter stages of the reaction. The reaction rate behavior was tentatively explained by an adsorption step followed by the diffusion of iron through a shell of inactive iron carbide.

Background. There is currently little information regarding factors associated with specific modes of motion segment failure using a fatigue failure model. Methods. Thirty-six human lumbar motion segments were fatigue tested using spinal compressive and shear loads that simulated lifting a 9 kg weight in three torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Twenty-five segments failed via fatigue prior to the 10,000 cycle maximum. These specimens were visually inspected and dissected so that the mode(s) of failure could be determined. Failure modes included endplate fractures (classified into nine varieties), vertebral body fractures, and/or zygapophysial joint disruption. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine whether certain morphometric variables, amount of motion segment flexion, disk degeneration scores, and/or loading characteristics were associated with the occurrence of specific failure modes. Findings. Results indicated that stellate endplate fractures were associated with increased posterior shear forces (P < 0.05) and less degenerated discs (P < 0.01). Fractures running laterally across the endplate were associated with motion segments having larger volumes (P < 0.01). Endplate depression was more common in smaller specimens (P < 0.01), as well as those experiencing increased posterior shear force (P < 0.05). Zygapophysial joint damage was more likely to occur in a neutral posture (P < 0.01). Interpretation. These results suggest that prediction of failure modes (e.g., specific endplate fracture patterns) may be possible (at least for older specimens) given knowledge of the spinal loads along with certain characteristics of the lumbar spine. The field testing of the Seismic Mine Monitor System is described. This system consists of nine geophones buried about 40 feet deep over a ten-square-mile area, the amplifiers and electronics needed to get the signals to the mine office, and a central processor unit to detect and locate explosions and large roof falls. Since the problems associated with the original installation were solved, this system has worked for 2 1/2 months. The system has detected roof falls in the pillar areas and has located blasts as small as 114 pound of dynamite. The location accuracy has, in general, been within 250 feet. The system is now being used to gather long-term data on the seismic activity of the mine.

Thermodynamic values for scandium and its compounds are very sparse. This is evident upon examination of any of the commonly used compilations of thermodynamic data. For example, National Bureau of Standards Circular 5004 lists only four heat of formation values, two free energy of formation values, and four heat-capacity values for scandium compounds. The entropy of crystalline scandium is one of the most fundamental values that has been lacking. This Bureau of Mines paper reports heat-capacity data for scandium metal in the temperature range from 50° to 298° K., together with the entropy value at 298.15° K. derived from these data through application of the third law of thermodynamics.

Marrow vein deposits will continue to be an important source of valuable minerals. Productivity per manshift is not keeping pace with operating costs. Increased mechanization of stoping operations must be obtained to create greater productivity at a reduced cost per ton. This application of mechanization may be to either present methods or to newly developed concepts. The total mine unit operations will be effected by increased productivity. Two approaches to increasing the mechanization of narrow vein stoping were studied with the intention of increasing stope productivity and decreasing stoping costs. A method of bringing efficient rubber-tired equipment into narrow cut and fill stopes was designed. It proposes to provide stope access by way of a ramp constructed on the stope fill. Impact breaking equipment was studied and specific applications proposed.

This project was a supporting effort with research contract H0230016 at White Pine Copper Company. Creep properties of White Pine rock were determined. These and properties for bolted joints were used in finite element analyses of sections of the White Pine Mine which included analysis of bed separations in the roof and sloping faults. In-situ experimental measurements were made of tension, compression, and bending of resin bolts by use of strain-gaged bolts. Evaluations of bolting effectiveness and comparisons of predicted and measured roof behavior are given.

Many different types of surface mining equipment use enclosed cabs to protect equipment operators from health and safety hazards. The overburden removal and mining process can be extremely dusty and can cause excessive dust exposure. To study this issue, a cooperative research effort was established between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, U.S. Silica Co., Clean Air Filter Co., and Red Dot Corp. in an effort to lower respirable dust levels in an enclosed cab on an older surface drill at a silica sand operation. Throughout this research effort, a number of modifications were incorporated into the drill&apos;s filtration and pressurization system, as well as in other areas, to improve its design and performance. An average cab efficiency of 93.4% was determined with gravimetric sampling instruments when comparing the outside with the inside cab dust levels on the final design. Although this study considered just one operation, the goal was to identify cost-effective improvements that could be implemented on all types of enclosed cabs to lower respirable dust concentrations. Two critical components for an effective enclosed cab system are having a properly designed, installed, and maintained filtration and pressurization system, along with a method for maintaining structural cab integrity, which allows the cab to be positively pressurized. Another important component is maintaining cab cleanliness. Although this research was originally directed toward the mining industry, it is also applicable to agricultural or construction equipment.

The land mass of the Asia and Pacific region comprises 11 million square miles or about 15% of the total Earth&apos;s land area. The bulk of the region is contained on the Asian continental land mass. Australia, the world&apos;s largest island or the world&apos;s smallest continent, alone is almost as large as the continental United States. The islands of New Zealand, New Guinea, Borneo, Sumatra, and Honshu are among the largest in the world. Collectively, they constitute a land area of 1.1 million square miles or an area about one-fourth the size of the United States. The countries in the Asia and Pacific region represent some of the most vibrant economies in the world. Japan is undisputed as one of the world&apos;s leaders in manufacturing and commerce. Hong Kong and Singapore are significant both as entrepôt and banking centers. The economies of Australia, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan compare favorably to the level of the industrialized countries in western Europe. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand have maintained strong economic growth during the past two decades. All these countries in the Asia and Pacific region collectively constitute a significant bloc as to raw materials production and consumption, as to manufacturing, and as to world trade.

The effectiveness of a loader-mounted fan on diesel vehicles combined with natural convection for ventilation of a dead heading (the patented Janelid system) was investigated experimentally. The results were obtained using CO2 as a tracer gas in a 1/4 scale model heading. Buoyant forces were scaled to establish similarity with full scale. For a loader moving in a typical load-haul-dump cycle, the loader-mounted fan reduced the tracer gas concentration by 26 percent compared with a reduction of 32 percent for a jet fan of four times the flow capacity.

A portable optical instrument for performing multispot laser vibrometry is described. The instrument is capable of measuring arrival times, surface motion frequency, and surface velocity and displaying these quantities in various useful ways. Sigma Research is currently pursuing the development of such optical measuring systems for the evaluation of structures in rock by non-contact interferometry methods. This work was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Interior (U.S. Bureau of Mines) under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract number J0145075. The goal of the work was to develop a portable tripod mounted measuring system which can be set up at arbitrary distances (up to 30 meters) from a surface and project four in-line laser sample beams on this surface. A light receiving telescope gathers the scattered light from these four spots and provisions are made to mix this light with a reference beam from the laser. Four photodiodes are employed to determine the resultant interference signals which characterize the motion (particle velocity, frequency, amplitude) of the four illuminated spots on the surface under sudy. Information of this type can then be used to characterize the elastic or mechanical properties of the surface in question. In some cases (if more than four spots are involved) this surface information could be back propagated to draw inferences about the internal state of the material volume bounded by this surface.

The results of a two-year research effort aimed at improving communication systems in coal mines is reported. A review of communication methods presently used in coal mines is presented. Theoretical and-experimental results of a four pronged effort in the areas of (1) through-the-earth propagation, (2) paging system design, (3) improvement of wired telephone systems, and (4) carrier current systems are described. Auxiliary systems not included in the above are considered briefly. Various conclusions are drawn in light of practical constraints and the needs of the mining industry. The study clearly demonstrated the need for nine communications to be designed on system basis. The viability of new technology for providing reliable mine communication for improving mine safety and operating efficiency is shown.

A thermal imaging borehole probe was designed and fabricated for the purpose of obtaining thermal images, through smoke, of objects and people in underground mines. The effort was basically unsuccessful; electrical noise, and possibly thermal noise, interferred with the desired signals to the extent that spatial resolution in the images was unacceptable.

Reconnaissance studies of beach sands along the eastern part of the Gulf of Alaska were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine if any of these coastal areas warranted investigations as possible sources of valuable minerals. Because of difficult access and limited transportation facilities only a minimum of sampling, surveying, and camping equipment is utilized to obtain spot samples from key areas as well as information indicating the location, size, and character of the deposits. Such data were obtained from beaches located along approximately 247 miles of the Gulf of Alaska coastline during parts of the 1957 and 1958 field seasons. A total of 201 3-inch-diameter auger holes, spaced roughly at 1 mile intervals, were bored by hand methods to depths ranging from 3 feet to 27 feet; also 33 shovel samples were collected from selected localities. Samples were reduced to a rough concentrate in the field by panning; the rough concentrates were shipped to the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Juneau for further concentration and for petrographic and chemical analyses. Particular attention was given to the heavy-mineral content of the concentrates, although the types and relative amounts of rock-forming minerals were also determined. The reconnaissance indicated that, generally, the valuable mineral content of the beach deposits was too low to be of further interest except in the vicinity of Yakutat and Lituya Bays where erratic but possibly significant concentrations of magnetite and/or ilmenite were found. At Yakutat, about 20 miles of beachline extending southeasterly from Ocean Cape, yielded samplas containing from 1 pound to over 300 pounds of iron and from a trace to over 100 pounds of titanium dioxide (TiO2) per cubic yard of beach material. However, the higher grade samples represented local concentrations of minor importance. The general tenor of the Yakutat beach, as indicated by the airthmetical average of 27 auger-hole samples, is about 35 pounds of iron and 20.5 pounds of titanium dioxide per cubic yard of beach material. Gasoline has become of such commercial and military importance that it is now practically indispensable. This product is of special interest because, in addition to realizing its value, the Nation is learn- ing that the raw materials from which gasoline is obtained are not unlimited. ACTIVITIES OF THE BUREAU OF MINES IN PROMOTING EFFICIENCY IN THE PRODUCTION AND UTILIZATION OF GASOLINE. The Bureau of Mines has directly and indirectly worked for the conservation and efficient utilization of this important product. Some of the bureau's activities have been along lines widely different from those reported in this bulletin. The work of the bureau toward the increase in efficiency of processes for the production and refining of crude oil is too well known to need mention here. Another line of activity in which the bureau has engaged is the collection and publi- cation of statistics on refinery operations. Finally, as immediate preparation for the present bulletin, two surveys of the gasoline mar- keting situation have been made. The primary object of this bul- letin is to make available to the public information obtained in con- nection with these surveys. PURPOSE OF THE GASOLINE SURVEYS OF 1917 AND 1919. Shortly after the United States declared war on Germany the bureau collected gasoline samples in the retail market throughout various parts of the country. Information regarding the sources of these gasolines and the details of marketing them was obtained, and they were subjected to analytical tests which furnished conclusive informa- tion regarding their properties. The information obtained through this survey proved of inestimable value both to the bureau and the United States Fuel Administration, particularly in drawing up speci- fications and in ascertaining the best means of obtaining supplies of particular types of gasoline that were needed. A similar and more extensive survey was made in the months of April and May, 1919, in order to obtain data needed for the revision of the Federal motor gasoline specification. The specification adopted during the war had been the subject of numerous complaints, and it seemed desirable to determine whether or not these objections were valid before attempting revision.

The opinion is general among smelter operators that magnetite formed in the converter and reverberatory furnace has much to do with the loss of copper in the slag. Its action appears to be due in part to its relatively high infusibility, chemical stability, and specific gravity, as a result of Which it tends to form a layer of highly viscous "magnetite mush" between slag and matte. Particles of matte which might otherwise settle out of the slag are unable to pass through this layer. Maier and Van Arsdele have shown that the inclusion of grills of matte in the slag is also at tires very probably due to chemical reaction between magnetite and the constituents of the matte. In smelter control and in any laboratory study of slats the determination of magnetite is therefore a matter of some importance. The difficulties in the ray of making such a determination with any accuracy are rather obvious. Iron may occur in slag as ferric oxide, magnetite, various intermediate oxides, sulphides, silicates, as free metal, and in solid solution of several of these substances. Even if only the total iron content is to be determined, accuracy can be obtained only by painstaking and time-consuming separations from interfering elements. The determination of ferrous, ferric, and free iron in the presence of each other is a difficult matter under the most favorable conditions, and when present in a slag the difficulties are increased by the refractory nature of the sample, by the presence of sulphides, and by such elements as vanadium and molybdenum.

VANADIUM was discovered in 1801 by Andres Manuel del Rio, a professor of mineralogy at the School of Mines in Mexico City. Del Rio called the new element erythronium. Later, he decided that this was not a new element but a form of chromium. Not until 1831 did Nils G. Sefström, a Swedish chemist, positively determine that the metal was a new element which he named vanadium, after Vanadis, the Scandanavian goddess of beauty. From 1831 to the 1860&apos;s and 1870&apos;s, the comparative scarcity and high cost of vanadium restricted its commercial use. Shortly after 1870, more information was obtained on the physical and chemical properties of the element. Thereafter, research on vanadium has dealt largely with its use as an alloying element in steel and nonferrous metals. Vanadium is a widely distributed element in the earth&apos;s crust. It is more abundant than many metals but is disseminated in small quantities throughout a great variety of rocks. Relatively few deposits have contained ore of a grade suitable to warrant development for vanadium alone. It is produced in conjunction with uranium, iron, titanium, aluminum, and lead-zinc ores.

After World War II the Bureau of Mines studied methods of producing synthesis gas including a plan to gasify coal in place. Consequently, under a cooperative agreement with the Alabama Power Co., Bureau engineers directed a series of experiments that were carried out on the property of the Alabama Power Co. at Gorgas, Ala. The purpose of underground gasification of coal, regardless of method used, is to obtain the energy contained in the fuel for use on the surface, without mining in the usual sense of the term. Underground gasification can be described as (1) a process where coal, in place, is consumed by partial combustion with air, oxygen, steam, or any combination of these to produce a low calorific value gas (80 to 300 Btu per cu ft) or (2) a complete combustion process in which air is used to produce a gas containing carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and considerable thermal energy.
