This report is in fulfillment of Contract No. H023001.5 awarded to Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., on November 15, 1972. The scope of the work under this contract was to perform a two-phase survey for the purpose of determining the status of work in the following specific areas of industry needs under the Technology Transfer Program and to increase industry's awareness of research efforts under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 6f (P.L. 91-173): 1. Research and development of respirable dust sampling instruments which will more accurately collect the respirable Cuss as defined by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. 2. Development of a better means of control of respirable dust and float dust.

This report covers the study of the feasibility of using a hand-held infrared viewer as a methane indicator to observe methane gas at the face of an underground coal mine. The objective of this program was the development of a hand-held device to remotely detect the presence of concentrations of methane gas in underground coal mines. Convenient "mapping" of methane from a remote location would allow rapid and safe corrective procedures for working personnel. Modified commercially available equipment was evaluated both in the laboratory and in a working mine. Although readings were obtained and the general principle of operation demonstrated, the power levels necessary, and protective enclosures required, would raise the weight of the instrument beyond practical limits of portability. Based on currently available technology, it is the conclusion of the investigations that a practical, portable, hand-held visual methane indicator is beyond the state-of-the-art. The recommendation was, therefore, made that work be suspended, and the results and data compiled and presented in a final program report.

On November 9, the Reynolds Metals Company cut production by 12 at its primary aluminum smelters at Troutdale, Oreg., and Longview, Wash., as a result of an earlier 25% power cutback by the Bonneville Power Administration due to lower than normal stream flow in September, the Aluminum Company of America had closed one potline at its Vancouver smelter because of the power cutback. Nearly 700 union workers at Anaconda Aluminum Company's primary aluminum smelter at Sebree, Ky., walked off the job when their contract expired or, November 15, after rejecting a proposed 3-year contract. The smelter has an annual capacity of 180,000 tons mid accounts for 50% of Anaconda's aluminum production. No talks are scheduled.

"INTRODUCTION The injection of gas into the McClosky limestone in the adjoining, Griffin and New Harmony field in Indiana and Illinois and resulting increases in oil and gas production from this zone ore described in this report.Since 1911, the use of compressed air or as to increase oil production by supplementing natural reservoir energy has been widely adopted, and has resulted in the recovery of much additional oil, which otherwise would have been left underground. In many of the newer oil fields, including Griffin and New Harmony, a part of the compressed residue gas from natural gasoline plants is returned to the reservoir as a secondary method to increase oil and gasoline production. Part of the injected gas is stored underground for future use.By presenting data on many secondary recovery operations in a series of reports 5-9/ the Bureau of Mines has sought to stimulate interest in secondary recovery as a means of increasing oil recovery and current oil production for wartime needs. Most of the elder fields in the United States produce oil from sandstone reservoirs, and probably more than 90 percent of secondary recovery operations have been developed in oil bearing sandstones. During recent years, the volume of oil obtained by primary methods from limestone reservoirs has increased steadily, but as yet little has been done to recover, by secondary means,,the large volumes of oil left in limestone reservoirs when primary methods production are no longer profitable. Because of inherent differences in the origin and nature of the pore spaces between sandstones and limestones and because of differences in permeability and fluid content, secondary recovery methods, which are successful in sandstone-reservoirs, are not always applicable to limestones. Not much he been written concerning secondary recovery operations in limestone reservoirs, and few data are available to assist operators in developing such secondary recovery projects."

Productivity in underground metal and nonmetal mines is contingent upon work methods, mine layout, and ore handling techniques. One of the most important factors impacting productivity is the efficient movement of men, materials and supplies from the surface into and throughout the mine. Various transportation systems such as man-trains, service shafts, rubber-tired diesel equipment, etc. are currently used to transport men and supplies in underground mines. In many underground mines, it is not uncommon for a worker to spend 25% of his eight-hour working day traveling from the surface to his work area and returning to the surface.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, has undertaken a study to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSRs), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), hold up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSRs in the sixth phase of testing from mid-1996 to early 1998. The SCSRs were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator. These results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their inspection criteria, perform satisfactorily. However, the deployed CSE SR-100s exhibited significantly higher inhaled CO2 levels than new units, as in the previous phase. This will cause higher ventilation rates in most users, which will, in turn, result in higher breathing pressures, possibly causing users to prematurely remove the apparatus. CSE Corp. has developed a noise test that can identify apparatus suffering from chemical-bed degradation causing the early CO2 breakthrough. This test was added to the inspection criteria for the SR-100. In addition, several of the MSA Portal-Packs that passed their inspection criteria were found to have KO2 dust in their mouthpieces. Further investigations by NIOSH and the Mine Safety and Health Administration confirmed these findings, which resulted in the decertification of the apparatus and their removal from service.

This report contains the results of experimental work conducted by the Bureau of Mines to obtain the heats of formation at 298.15° K. of analcite, dehydrated analcite, lawsonite, anorthite, hexagonal anorthite, and leonhardite. Thermodynamic data for these minerals have applications in ceramics, extractive metallurgy, and particularly in geochemistry. Except for data on anorthite, no previous similar data existed. The present results will be a substantial aid in deriving the temperature-pressure-equilibrium relationships among these minerals. The heats of formation were determined by solution calorimetry, with hydrofluoric acid as the reaction medium. The results were expressed both in terms of the constituent oxides and in terms of the constituent elements. The heat of formation data were combined with related entropy values to obtain the free energies of formation at 298.15° K.

In This Chapter [Designing bleeder systems Examining and maintaining bleeder systems Evaluating bleeder system effectiveness] INTRODUCTION Bleeder systems are that part of the mine ventilation network used to ventilate pillared areas in underground coal mines. Pillared areas are those in which pillars have been wholly or partially removed, including the areas where coal has been extracted by longwall mining. Bleeder systems protect miners from the hazards associated with methane and other gases, dusts and fumes, and oxygen deficiency that may occur in these mined-out areas. Effective bleeder systems control the air passing through the area and continuously dilute and move any methane-air mixtures and other gases, dusts, and fumes from the worked-out area away from active workings and into a return air course or to the surface of the mine. A bleeder system includes the pillared area (including the internal airflow paths), bleeder entries, bleeder connections, and all associated ventilation control devices that control the air passing through the pillared area. Bleeder entries are special air courses designed and maintained as part of the mine ventilation system. [This chapter focuses on the design, examination, maintenance, and evaluation of bleeder systems in underground coal mines.] The history of coal mine explosions in the United States is a reminder of the importance of adequate ventilation. Some of those disasters were the result of inadequately ventilated pillared areas. The importance of developing bleeder systems to ventilate these pillared areas and evaluating the bleeder system’s effectiveness is reflected in present-day federal regulations. Procedures have been developed which permit determining in either existing or new mines the optimum diesel equipment deployment schemes and the effect of. diesel exhaust on mine-air quality. Specifically, the following areas are covered in the report: 1. Description of diesel deployment schemes in four underground coal mines that were visited is provided. 2. Description of the analysis procedure to determine the number of shuttle cars required to maintain maximum theoretical continuous miner (or loader) production rates in typical room-and-pillar mining systems and of exhaust contamination resulting from the deployment of diesel powered shuttle cars are provided. Sensitivity analyses to determine the effect of changes in input variables on production and contaminant concentrations are also discussed. 3. Description of the analysis procedure to develop the locomotive operating parameters is provided. Assessment of both production performance as well as estimates of the magnitude of diesel exhaust contamination of the mine air are also made. 4. Recommendations for extensions of this research are outlined and include developing and testing procedures for 1) determining equipment duty cycles for the diesel equipment, and 2) studying the exhuast contamination of mine air on the basis of these duty cycles.

The economy continued to expand during the third quarter, as real GNP rose at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.8%, up from 2.5% in the second quarter (table 1). Continued job gains (see below), higher incomes, and an increase in installment debt, resulted in a nearly 20% increase in consumer spending on durable goods. Consumer expenditure on nondurables fell slightly, while spending on services continued at a moderate pace. Nonresidential fixed investment climbed nearly 24%, as producers purchased more durable equipment. Residential fixed investment was adversely affected by rising interest rates, which slowed new home construction from January to August, 1987 to a rate 11.2% below a comparable period in 1986. Net exports of goods and services deteriorated slightly, after three consecutive quarters of improvement. The volume of net exports has risen 15% for the year, contributing to economic and employment growth, but large price increases on imports have slowed the improvement in the nominal trade balance. Although U.S. goods have declined in price relative to foreign goods because of the devaluation of the dollar, faster growth in exports is hampered by austerity programs in developing countries, and emphasis in Germany and Japan on curtailing inflation and fiscal deficits.

Research was conducted to investigate how ventilation of a mining face is affected when scrubber flow is greater or less than intake flow. Tests were conducted in a full-scale surface test gallery built to simulate a mining entry with a continuous mining ma- chine at the face. Methane gas was released at constant flow at the mining face. Gas measurements taken at six locations near the face were used to evaluate how well the face was being ventilated. Increasing scrubber flow resulted in lower methane levels even when scrubber flow was much greater than intake flow.

THIS-report gives results of in investigation of the carbonizing properties of 18 coals, including 2 from Alaska, 12 from British Columbia, 3 from Washington, and 1 from Utah. Each coal was carbonized in the standard 13-inch Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) retort at 900° C. Plastic properties were determined by the Gieseler and Davis methods, and agglutinating and free-swelling properties were determined by standard methods. Expanding properties were measured in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. From the results of the tests on these single coals, three coals from the Crowsnest area in British Columbia, representing Elk River Nos. 4, 9, and 10, were selected for blending with the Utah coal, which was from the Lower Sunnyside bed, Horse Canyon mine, Emery County. Lower Sunnyside also was blended with Wilkeson -Nos. 2 and 3 (Washington) coals, Pocahontas No. 3 from McDowell County, W. Va., and the Oklahoma low-volatile coal used in the blend carbonized at, the Provo, (Utah) coke plant at the time this investigation was started. Most of the blends contained 3 percent hard pitch, which is the proportion used at the Provo plant. The blends were also carbonized in 13-inch BM AGA retorts at 900° C. High-volatile B coal from the No. 3 bed, Evan-Jones mine, Lower Matanuska, Valley, Alaska, yielded poorly fused coke or char. M-bed coal from the Chickaloon mine, Upper Matanuska. Valley, Alaska, ranked as medium-volatile bituminous and coked strongly. It expanded 39.6 percent in the sole-heated oven at a. charge density of 55.5 pounds per cubic foot..

Electrowinning metals from solutions leached from low-grade ores is becoming an increasingly important extraction method as the metal industry turns to pollution-free recovery processes. Lead-alloy anodes are used industrially in the electrolytic recovery of zinc and copper. However, associated with the use of these anodes are the inherent problems of stability and lead contamination of the cathode. In an effort to eliminate these problems, the Bureau of Mines has developed a relatively inexpensive lead dioxide anode for electrowinning metals from strong acid solutions. The anode was prepared by depositing Pb02 directly on a titanium blank in a strong HN03-Pb(N03)2 solution at 2.15 to 6.45 A/dm2 and 60° C. This anode was tested in zinc and copper electrowinning cells containing 200 gpl H2S04 and 35 to 100 gpl metal ions at the current density of 3.23 to 6.45 A/dm2. Contamination of the cathode by lead was =0.005 pet. A 30-day test at 6.45 to 12.90 A/dm2 in an electrolyte containing 200 gpl H2S04 and no metal ions resulted in a slight change in surface morphology of the Pb02 anode but no measurable change in anode weight or dimensions.

As a result of early experiments in underground mine illumination, the Bureau of Hines recognized the need for additional experience with the underground lighting of coal mines having low seam thicknesses. There was already experience with tile illumination of coal mines having higher coal seams, and this contract with Ocean Energy Inc. (OEI) was undertaken to contribute to the "low coal" experience. For the purpose of this contract, a "low coal? mine is defined as one having less than 45 inches of overall headroom in the working places. As a practical limit, 26 inches was the minimum coal seam thickness to be encountered in this program. In one instance, the maximum coal seam thickness was eight to ten feet, however, this particular work was at the direction of the Technical Project Officer (TPO) by virtue of the unique type of lighting arrangement that was to be evaluated which would be useful for low coal. At the outset of the contract, three major tasks were established. The first two tasks involved the installation of permissible fluorescent lighting equipment at two low coal mines. The intention was to illuminate mining sections in each case consisting of one or more machines. The third task was to illuminate a variety or mining equipment including a longwall. For the purpose of this report, the fol-owing identifies the particular installations associated with each task.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has investigated engineering noise controls to reduce sound levels in cabs on air-rotary drill rigs. A recent investigation revealed that some drillers are exposed to A-weighted sound levels exceeding 85 dB even though a cab is used. NIOSH studied the in-cab sound levels of one such rig. First, preliminary tests were conducted in a controlled environment using accelerometers and microphones with spectral analysis to identify the dominant noise sources for in-cab sound levels. The results indicate that vibration transmitted from multiple hydraulic pumps to the control panel produces a dominant spike in the sound level spectrum in the 400 Hz 1/3-octave band. Next, field tests were performed in a production environment to evaluate noise controls to reduce in-cab sound levels. It was found that utilizing hydraulic noise suppressors reduces the structure-borne noise transmitted to the control panel. Further, using hydraulic noise suppressors and enhancing soundproofing reduced the in-cab A-weighted sound levels by as much as 4 dB.

This report describes a program of research to evaluate methanometry in coal mines. The program commenced by conducting an extensive state-of-the-art survey. Details of the survey are presented which includes a rating of various types of instruments that can be used to detect and record methane gas. Laboratory test data, on mine instruments tested are presented together with results from a computerized statistical analysts.

This paper has been written to describe briefly the mining and milling of gold and silver ores in the Black Canyon and neighboring mining districts in Yavapai County, Ariz. The description of present operations is the result of a 10-day visit to the region by the writer in March 1936. The Bureau of Mines measured respirable dust in coal mines by means of multiple dust samplers worn by persons moving about the mines. The measurements were made primarily to evaluate the effectiveness of certain dust-control techniques; however, for this report, the data have been analyzed to determine the precision of the personal dust-sampling measurements. A total of 68 sets of measurements were available from multiple personal samplers. The measured dust masses were less than 1.0 mg because the sampling times were short. The coefficient of variation calculated from these data was 18.5 pct, compared with coefficients of variation ranging from about 10 to 30 pct, which were calculated from the most precise and extensive data available for fixed-point dust measurements made in coal mines. From this comparison, it is concluded that dust samplers worn by personnel are as precise as fixed-point samplers in measuring respirabe coal dust; the wearing of the samplers by someone moving about a mine does not contribute significantly to the variation in measurements made with these instruments.

This report on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines presents compilations of inspection test data furnished on their products by manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline, and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on samples of these gasolines. Data and physical samples for the survey were submitted by 15 manufacturers on 18 grade 80, 21 grade 91/98, 22 grade 100/130, and 10 grade 115/145 aviation fuels.

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. (a) In-shaft equipment design and specification criteria are considered as they influence guideline preparation. (b) A comprehensive review of hoist electric drives and controls as applied to mine hoists is set forth with special reference to duty cycle calculations and their effect on electrical component selection.
