The Bureau of Mines has developed MULSIM/BM, an improved computer program using the boundary-element approach for geomechanical analysis of mine plans in single or multiple coal seams. This Information Circular presents the improved features of the MULSIN/BM program. The four major improvements are the following: (1) Ability to specify up to 26 material property sets. (2) A new material model capability for gob and inserted materials such as packwalls or cribs. (3) Ability to model a large area with a grid of undivided blocks and to subdivide only a specified fine-mesh portion of these blocks into elements. (4) Specification of extraction ratios for the undivided blocks. In addition, an interactive graphics mesh generator program was written to accompany MULSIM/BM. A complete user's guide and program listings are included within the appendixes. The MULSIM/BM and mesh generator programs are available on tape from the National Technical Information Service.3

The mineral Industry, following the economy as a whole, experienced little growth in 1992. However, with modernized plants, efficient workforces, and lower operating costs, the industry is well positioned to take advantage of possible improvement in the national economy during 1993. In addition to the significant 1992 events highlighted below, important events, trends, and issues within individual mineral industries are addressed in the commodity sections that follow. The value of processed materials of mineral origin is estimated to have been about $310 billion in 1992. The value of U.S. raw nonfuel minerals production in 1992 is estimated at approximately $32 billion, a 3% increase over 1991. The value of domestic minerals production has increased in all but 4 of the last 32 years.

To promote greater use of abundant domestic raw materials in the manufacture of synthetic mullite, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a comprehensive investigation to determine the effects of the impurity oxides TiO2, Fe203, and alkali on physical properties of sintered mullite-forming mixtures. The first part of the report presents the results of work covering a major area within the mullite study; namely, the effect of impurity oxides on volume stability, one of the outstanding characteristics of mullite refractories. The volume stability of 20 compositions in each of 3 alumina- to-silica ratios, which blanket the range commonly found in purchase specifications, has been determined following procedures of Navy Specifications B-15606 A for Grade A high-alumina refractories. Results indicated that so long as 5 percent of impurities are combined approximtely in the proportions of 3 percent Ti02, 1 percent Fe203, and 1 percent alkali, sintered mullite-forming compositions in the almina to silica range tested will be volume stable. A permissible tolerance of one-half per- cent in each impurity oxide provides a range that includes values common in the natural minerals from which sintered mullite may be made. Within the total range of 5-percent impurity mixtures, a greater number of volume-stable compositions were obtained by increasing the alumina-silica ratio.

The value of nonfuel raw mineral production in the United States for 1977 increased over that of 1976 by 5%, from $16.7 billion to $17.5 billion. Metals declined by 5% from $6.1 billion to $5.8 billion, chiefly because of strikes in the iron ore industry and a depressed copper market. Subsidization of mining industries in some foreign countries accounted in part for the excess of copper and some other metals on world markets. Weak metal markets and continued slowdowns in the world economy were the main reasons of the virtual absence of new mine projects. Increasing domestic governmental involvement affecting mineral industry activities, such as pricing controls, public land withdrawals, and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, effective August 3, continued to be controversial and to be criticized by various segments of the industry.

The monthly summary of the climatological record for the demonstration mine is presented in Table 1. Tear normal temperatures occurred throughout the growing season. From May to October precipitation was more than normal except in June when it was 2.55 inches below normal. Corn and soybean plantings were delayed until June 2-7 because of wet field conditions. This is about one month later than normal for corn planting. Insect infestations were much less than those encountered in previous years. Cutworm activity was not noticed and alfalfa weevil infestation were small and patchy. Stalk rot in corn was a significant problem at harvest and resulted in much Milk lodging. The wet and generally overcast conditions of July, August and September were bend 10 beneficial al to certain plant disease organisms. For example, pumpkins planted in a small garden area at the demonstration mine did not ripen because of a powdery mildew resulting from overcast, wet conditions. Field operations and row crop plantings were greatly delayed by wet field conditions. It was difficult to plant by conventional tillage because the soil remained soft and sticky where the moldboard plow had been used. Elastic wave velocities and moduli were determined by both the pulse and resonance methods in a large number of specimens of St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite and Tennessee marble under the same moisture, temperature, and stress environment. Long cylinders were first tested by the resonance method to obtain longitudinal bar and torsional wave velocity. The cylinders were then sectioned in half and tested by the pulse method to obtain the transient pulse velocity. These velocities were later used to obtain various moduli for comparison. Statistical comparisons between the Young's, shear, and bulk moduli and Poisson's ratios obtained independently by the pulse and resonance methods indicate that the methods do not give equivalent results in nearly isotropic rock. The amount of difference varies for each modulus, with the least difference (less than 5 pct) occurring in the shear modulus and the greatest difference (as high as 34 pct) in the bulk modulus. Moduli determinations in aluminum show much closer agreement between the pulse and resonance methods than in rock. The discrepancy in pulse and resonance results probably is caused by frequency dispersion effects and by differences in error sensitivity in the various formulas used to calculate the moduli.

A technique was developed for sampling and analyzing airborne dusts in diesel-operated, underground, metal, and nonmetal mines. Samples were taken using personal respirable samplers, operated as area samplers, and an 11-stage cascade impactor. Real-time particle size distribution and concentration measurements were made with a quartz crystal micro-balance cascade impactor and a portable electrical aerosol analyzer. The materials characterized were minerals (by XRD), elements (by XRF), particle size distribution and concentration (gravimetrically), and organic constituents (by HPLC). The method was used to characterize dusts generated at the chute pulling operations on the main haulage level of an underground tungsten mine. Analysis showed that respirable dust concentration ranged from 0.8 to 2.3 mg/m3. It consisted of silica (3-7%); organic constituents from diesel exhaust (0.11-0.31 mg/m3 equivalent airborne concentration); and mineral dust (39-100%). The remainder was diesel exhaust particles. It was concluded that size selective sampling may be used to estimate the ratio of diesel exhaust to nondiesel dusts in the respirable fraction.

This report presents the results of studies of Kennecott Copper Corporation's tailings embankment at Magna, Utah. The stability studies described were performed on only one cross section of the embankment, utilizing; data obtained from drilling, sampling, and testing, which was limited in nature. The main objective of the data collection was to provide background information to support the overall research effort. Because of this limited scope, it is not possible to evaluate the degree of safety or adequacy of the embankment or disposal system, and the information and data contained in the body of this report must be judged in that light. The first part of this report contains discussion of site geology and seismicity, pertinent information on the refuge disposal system, a discussion of the tailings materials characteristics, a summary of the engineering analyses, and A bibliography. The second tart (appendices) contains basic geologic and engineering data supporting the discussions in the first part of the report.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the Sheep Creek prospect in the north-central Alaska Range to evaluate the Pb, Zn, Ag, and Sn resources. The studies included field investigations, mineralogical characterization, and concentration tests. Mineralization at Sheep Creek consists of disseminated, banded, and massive pyrite, sphalerite, and galena. Tin occurs as grains of cassiterite (Sn02) in the quartz-mica matrix and within pyrite and sphalerite grains, and Ag occurs in solid solution within the galena. Three bulk surface samples and two sets of core samples were collected at the Sheep Creek prospect for this study. Gravity concentration yielded products with up to 30 pct Sn, and the best result was a product that recovered 52 pct of the Sn at a grade of 22 pct Sn. Bulk sulfide flotation yielded products that recovered up to 89 pct of the Zn, 73 pct of the Pb, and 75 pct of the Ag, but grades were relatively low; selective flotation would significantly increase the grades.

The Bureau of Mines, in its effort to promote greater utilization of domestically abundant materials, conducted reasearch on an alternate mold material that has commercial potential for titanium investment casting. Using variations of the conventional lost wax molding process, investment shell molds were formed entirely of fused, calcia-stabilized Zr02 and a Zr02-forming binder. Optimization of binder/slurry properties', stucco grain size and dis¬tribution, and curing practices resulted in a structurally sound investment shell that was distortion free and thermally stable. Small titanium castings, weighing up to 10 pounds, were prepared in unheated molds by both static and centrifugal casting techniques. Microstruc¬tural examination of the castings revealed that mold fill and surface quality were enhanced by centrifugal casting, although good results also were obtained from the statically poured molds. Microstructural and electron microprobe examinations showed that excessive, brittle case formation could be avoided by curing the dried shell molds in air for at least 2 hours at 1,400° C. Increasing curing temperature and time above these levels yielded added bene¬fits. Molds fired in vacuum at 1,500° C for 4 hours yielded castings essen¬tially free of case formation. The tensile properties of as-cast test specimens (no surface conditioning performed) id the chemical composition of representative metal samples showed that castings produced were comparable to Grades C-1 and C-2 unalloyed titanium This indicated that no sifnificant degradation of metal properties resulted from mold/metal interaction.

This circular is the third of a series summarizing the technical problems involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. The first, Information Circular 6668, published in December 1932, discussed the problems involved in prospecting and exploration. The second, Information Circular 6689 (March 1933), dealt with the development of gravel deposits. This is part I of a paper designed to present a study of problems arising in the excavation of sand and revel and their delivery to the treatment plant. Other circulars are planned which will discuss preparation of the material for market, plant storage, and miscellaneous subject. Definitions For the purpose of this circular, excavation is defined as the recovery of sand and gravel from developed natural deposits and their delivery to a plant for market preparation.

This paper deals principally with the retreating method of mining as applied in the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co.'s deep Conglomerate mine, pointing cut some of the difficulties encountered in deep mining and describing the particular methods used at Calumet to carry on a large-scale operation at great depth with a minimum hazard factor. The circular is one of a series dealing with mining methods and costs which is being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines. Drive systems for mining machines are usually sized to accommodate anticipated peak loads. Usually, the average power requirements are considerably less. Energy storage and power averaging are attractive concepts for mining machinery and could have far-reaching implications. The purpose of this program was to: ? Identify truly feasible concepts, ? Identify advantages/disadvantages, limitations, and constraints, ? Evaluate feasibility based on today?s technology, ? Identify anticipated safety problems, and ? Provide the designer with a comprehensive literature base. Concepts evaluated include flywheels, high energy batteries, gas charged accumulators, inductive storage, capacitive storage, springs and counterweights, thermal, closed cycles, internal combustion engines, trolley systems, and hybrid systems. A comprehensive reference index is provided. Included is an appendix containing abstracts of the pertinent literature.

Continued development of an especially impregnated silica gel capable of reversible chemical detection of carbon monoxide (CO) was reported. The affects of changes in mine-related ambient conditions on the detection catalyst's response were explored. Temperature, humidity, and several interfering gases were found to affect the detection catalyst. The interferents include hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen dioxide, acetylene (and methylacetylene), and ammonia. High humidity decreased the detection catalyst's sensitivity to carbon monoxide for some formulations. Increasing temperature generally decreased the reaction time of the detection catalyst with carbon monoxide. Badges and carriers for the visual presentation of the detection catalyst were constructed. Several variations of these devices included provisions for absorbants and filtering agents which help protect the detection catalyst from gaseous interferents. A variety of catalyst support agents were tested in an effort to find the most suitable. Included were alumina, magnesium oxide, magnesium silicate, and several forms of silica gel. In addi tion to free-flowing forms of these sorbents, thin layer chromatography plates coated with cellulose, alumina, and silica gel and newly developed PTFE entrained silica gels were examined. A limited physical, chemical, and mechanistic characterization of the detection catalyst and the materials used to prepare it has been carried out. Metal component ratio studies, spectral, analytical, pH, and rate measurements were done.

Dusts can be filtered out of air streams onto polymer surfaces by electrostatic trapping resulting from the spontaneous transfer of electrons upon contact between dust particles and the polymer surfaces. Such spontaneous contact electrification has been studied quantitatively in this contract with the aid of modern semiconductor charge-sensors with the aim of determining what basic principles govern the sign and magnitude of contact electrification. Information obtained by capacitance-voltage measurements of thin polymer films on silicon showed that charges as large as 4 x 1012 electrons per cm2 develop spontaneously, and that such a charge gives adhesional forces of 165 pounds per square inch (11 atmospheres). Direct measurement of dust polymer contact electrification, using silicon surface channel conductance sensors, also showed spontaneous charges of more than 1012 electrons per cm2. Some polymers can either donate or accept electrons. These included chlorinated polyethylene, chlorinated polypropylene, polyethylmethacrylate, and a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinylether. Other polymers never accepted electrons but could donate electrons; these included polystyrene, pulychlorostyrune, polyvinylchloride, polyvinylacetate, a polycarbonate (Lexan), and cellulose tributyrate. Contact electrification studies were made with dusts (coal dust, a channel black, or a silica powder) contacting thin films of various polymers solvent-cast onto the semiconductor charge-sensor. Sometimes charging was instantaneous and sometimes slower, but in all but one case (coal dust on a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinyl ether) the charge trunsfer was a donation of electrons by the polymer to the dust. Because of its diverse colors, decorative patterns, and varying textures, it has furnished material for artistic architectural design for many centuries. The marble industry is described in some detail in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 106, The Technology of Marble Quarrying, which, unfortunately, is now out of print but may be consul ted at most large libraries. Onyx marble and travertine are discussed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6751. The purpose of this paper is to describe the main features of a distinctive group of ornamental marbles known as the serpentine marbles or verde antiques.

This contract is concerned with the construction of a Time Resolved Audio Dosimeter System consisting of one readout unit and several dosimeter units. The Time Resolved Audio Dosimeter System was designed and developed by the Bureau of Mines with the purpose of this contract aimed at obtaining additional units for further field testing and evaluation. All construction was in accordance with the Bureau of Mines design and/or Bureau approved drawings produced during the course of this contract. This report contains a summary of the construction efforts, problems encountered, recommendations and all drawings produced under this contract.

A coal shuttle car equipped with a pulsed laser optical ranging system to provide guidance for an automatic steering system was tested in production coal mining. Test results are presented for the two mines where testing took place, and some operator's reactions are included. Automatic steering control keeps the car cantered in an entry, and automatic turns are made at intersections as signaled by the operator. All other controls-tram, conveyor, brake, etc, remain manual and require operator control. Complete override of steering while in the automatic mode is retained by the operator, who may grab the steering wheel at any time and turn in opposition to the automatic signal by applying about 10 foot-pounds of torque.
