The lifecycle of a resource, specifically a metal, is often depicted as circle from primary production from mining to minerals processing and via manufacturing and use to disposal and recycling. When a material is recycled, it is considered as saved energy compared to producing the material from primary source. This is, however, a simplified representation. At each step of the life cycle, there are changes in the quality of the material due to different materials chemical and physical interaction, phase transformations due to diffusion, radiation etc. Due to these physical and chemical phenomena there are losses of material, which as determined by thermodynamics are not recoverable within the life cycle. This can be considered as an increase embodied energy per mass unit of substance and loss exergy from the material cycle. With low cyclic loss, the material will remain in the recycling loop for a long time, while with high cyclic loss it will disappear fast. Where you put the material determines how fast it disappears from the resource cycle. In this research paper the phenomena of quality degradation of material and idea of increase of embodied energy and exergy loss within a resource cycles is portrayed. The cyclic nature of material states and transitions and energy consequences of material quality degradation as well as the parameters affecting the length of the time scales of the material cycles are described. Currently the cyclic embedded energy and the history of material is not taken under consideration in generic life cycle assessment. This easily results into a conclusion that lifetime of product is optimized only in terms of how much energy an appliance uses during its lifetime, while ignoring the loss of embedded energy due to the effects caused by the environs the material is subjected to during the cycle. Better description of the time properties of material give us a possibility to design toward optimum lifetime of products in terms of resource efficiency. Professor A.M. Gaudin and his students at MIT were dedicated to understanding the fundamentals of mineral processing and as a consequence were constantly searching for better quantatative descriptions of size reduction, liberation and mineral separations. I have had the good fortune of meeting Professor Gaudin and working with many the modeling pioneers who followed him. I have observed first hand the refinement of mineral processing models as they increased in realisticness moving up the steps of the pyramid (see figure below) from pure empiricism to the current pinacle of physics based models. During this journey our industry benefited significanbtly as model prediction errors were reduced from ± 20% to ± 1%. Unit operation and plant simulations improved in accuracy and speed of calculations.

TATA STEEL is the pioneer in coal beneficiation in India. The first coal beneficiation plant was set up in 1951 at West Bokaro and subsequently in 1953 in Jharia. Over the years more beneficiation capacity was added by setting up new coal washeries in both West Bokaro and Jharia, the coal divisions of Tata Steel. currently the beneficiation capacity available is 8.5 mtp aappx Being a captive supplier supplying the coking coal as per demands of our steel works is challenging in the sense that the intent is to leverage the captive raw material advantage and select the best strategy for maximizing value up to steel making. The beneficiation plants were designed to produce clean coal up to 17% ash. With the demand of increasing productivity at the blast furnace the clean coal ash was lowered. subsequently the processes were audited and efficiency improved. The next challenge was to improve the throughputs in the existing plants to maximize the clean coal production. The upgradation was designed in house and implemented to upgrade the plant from nameplate capacity of 2.1 mtpa to 4.5 mtpa while the yearly production targets were also achieved. The presentation will detail the different phases of improvements, process followed, challenges faced, and the results as achieved in the process. In this study, thorium mineral that found in the complex ore deposit bearing bastnasite, fluorite, and barite from Eskisehir - Sivrihisar district has been tried to extract by using HCl and H2SO4 leaching. Ore sample of approximately 3 tons taken from the ore deposit has been homogenized in order to obtain composite samples by means of ore preparation techniques for experiments. Results of chemical analyses of composite samples are as given; 40.8% CaF2, 35.35% BaSO4, 2.01 Ce, 1.5% La, 0.39% and 0.1% Th. HCl and H2SO4 leaching processes have been performed to gain Th in the ore. For determining the optimum particle size, the samples have been ground under controlled conditions and brought to the sizes of 0.065, 0.2, 1 and 3 mm. Leaching experiments have been carried out in both HCl and H2SO4 acids without roasting and roasting at the temperature of 900°C for 1, 3 and 6 h retention times for all particle sizes determined before. In the experiments, the highest Th recoveries reached are as follows; 78.74% Th when H2SO4 and 1 mm particle sized sample used, and 1 h roasting applied and 73.38% Th when HCl and 1 mm particle sized sample used, and 3 h roasting applied. "In 2015 in the frames of federal special-purpose program «National system of chemical and biosafety of Russian Federation (2009-2014)» Federal State Budget Educational Institution of Higher Education ""Irkutsk National Research Technical University” (further–INRTU) performed works aimed at disposal of accumulated arsenical residues at industrial site of the former Angarsk arsenical plant (AAP) processing arsenious ores from Svirsk town in Irkutsk region. The plant in 1934-1949 produced arsenic trioxide for the defence industry. Prior to starting the works on disposal of industrial pollution focus the total amount of cinders stored on 13 ha of industrial site of AAP was 156 900 tons with 1% average arsenic content. Close to the cinders there were also remains of industrial buildings and process equipment in the amount of 6 600 m3 that contained 150 tons of arsenic. Additional source of pollution at the industrial site of AAP is contaminated soil amounted to 48 000 tons. Proven reserves of gold and silver in the cinders were 6.1 and 47 g/t respectively. In 2015 the source of arsenious pollution was detoxificated according to mineral matrix technology and stored in a special landfill with separate stocking of gold-containing cinder and other arsenious residues. This technology of waste disposal specifies extraction of valuable metals from cinder in future. The similar case is with Vershino-Darasunsky settlement in Trans-Baikal Territory where the abandoned industrial site of the former arsenic plant is located in the central part of the settlement. The concentration of arsenic and valuable components can be compared to the concentration at AAP. Since 2016 the demand for removal of such industrial pollution sources is legislated due to amendments in Federal Law No. 7-FZ on environmental protection. It results in a real possibility to remove such dangerous industrial residues deposits as the one located in Vershino-Darasunsky settlement. "The study provides the comparative analysis of the performance of water only cyclones and hydrocyclone for iron ore fines processing at Joda Iron ore processing plant, Tata Steel. Joda iron ore deposits have higher proportion of kaolinite in the finer fractions and are meant to be separated with cyclones. The iron processing flowsheet of Joda comprises of water only cyclone for beneficiation of iron ore fines. Water only cyclones are used for the beneficiation of fines in the iron ore processing industry and have a larger cone angle compared to that of conventional hydrocyclones to enhance the density effect in the separation. They are aimed to achieve better product quality of underflow however; the desired result could not be achieved at the Joda processing plant. The water only cyclones were operating at the corrected cut-size of about 60 micron with an imperfection of 0.40 and water split to underflow was approximately 10%. The overall Fe recovery from the water only cyclones were 60%. Since the quality of fines produced from the water only cyclone couldn’t be improved, an attempt was made to process the fraction in the conventional hydrocyclone to achieve the desired product quality. The trial results indicated better product quality with the Fe recovery of 72% at corrected cut-size of 70 microns and imperfection of around 0.29. In view of above results it was recommended to replace the water only cyclones with hydrocyclones to achieve higher product quality of about 60% Fe content.INTRODUCTION Water only cyclones were installed at wet plant, Joda to process the classifier fines where the cyclone underflow is considered as concentrate and overflow is discarded as slime. Because of the lower capacity of the cyclones 30% of the classifier overflow was bypassed directly to thickener. Apart from this the quality of fines produced from the water only cyclone couldn’t be improved further hence an attempt was made to process the fraction in the conventional hydrocyclone to achieve the desired product quality and quantity. Selection of mill size for reducing a feed material of a given size to the desired product size is generally based on the specific energy estimate obtained from Bond test. Over the last thirty years or so, an attempt has been made to develop a more accurate and powerful alternative approach based on the characterization of the particle breakage kinetics and material transport through the mill over a range of operating conditions of interest and correlating the degree of size reduction achieved with the net specific energy input to the mill. Particle breakage kinetics are described in terms of the specific grinding rate and breakage distribution parameters for the individual size fractions. Precise estimates of these parameters and the net energy input to the test ball mill (a laboratory or pilot scale mill) are important for development of desired energy-size correlations. In this context, three tasks are important: (a) preparation of the feed charge, (b) design of batch grinding experiments and (c) computational technique used for estimation of the breakage rate and breakage distribution parameters. This paper highlights several aspects of these three tasks that have been overlooked by researchers working in this field, and describes a more appropriate approach for estimation of model parameters and specific energy input. Several examples are included based on the data available in the literature and those generated in our laboratories to illustrate important points.

The lecture is about the growing role and the evolution of advanced process control (APC) in the mining and mineral processing industry, taking into account major trends in Information Technology. It reflects the standpoint of a team, which has already successfully developed APC technology for more than 20 years. Advanced process control systems tend to rely on combinations of artificial intelligence techniques or algorithms that complement each other and cooperate. Each technique or algorithm makes it possible to use certain type of knowledge about the process, so that the advanced control systems benefit at any time from the combined knowledge of process and control engineers and plant operators, from knowledge derived from past research work and process modeling, from a considerable amount of data provided by advanced instrumentation in real time, and from knowledge that can be extracted automatically and at any time from past data and images. The lecture will first review and compare the role, merits and limitations of algorithms that are used for online decision making in mineral processing plants: expert systems, fuzzy logic, neural networks, soft sensors, optimizers, and MPC controllers. The lecture will also review the role of online image analysis and sound analysis in process control. Recent developments in this area open new dimensions, in particular the ability for advanced process control algorithms to automatically explore the past, move back and forth in time in order to make better informed decisions, and the ability to cooperate with the operators for better performance. Applications will be presented. Recent progress in process simulation makes it possible to design, configure, check, and pre-tune APC systems before plant startup, opening new options for implementing APC. The Indian steel industry is growing at a rapid pace and expected to be the 2nd largest steel producer in the world after China. To cope up with this growth and to sustain it, the industry needs to focus on effective utilization of domestic metallurgical coals. While the importance of indigenous coal has increased, its supply from the domestic sources is declining. This is primarily due to high ash content in Indian coals leading to its difficulty in washing to a low level competitive to imported coals. Non-availability of a suitable beneficiation technology to bring down the ash to such a low level is the other reason. Effective utilization of current technologies has enabled Tata Steel to bring down the ash to 13-16% from its captive collieries. However, further lowering the ash using the conventional beneficiation technologies is difficult and unsustainable. New technologies should be developed for bringing down the ash further. A thrust area research program has been undertaken at Tata Steel for producing clean coal with 8% ash maintaining the yield currently achieved in its washeries. The technologies attempted are based on chemical beneficiation of coal. In leaching process, suitable chemicals are used for extracting ash minerals from the coal. As an alternative process, the combustible part of the coal is being extracted using a suitable organic solvent through an organo-refining process. Both the processes have been successfully developed in the laboratory and are being demonstrated in pilot scales. Various beneficiation processes practiced at Tata Steel including the efforts made for developing new processes for achieving clean coal with 8% ash have been discussed in this paper. With the increase in world population, the requirement of natural resources is increasing every day. The nature is still stronger than man is but we must use natural resources more responsibly. The key to our well being is sustainable development Development effort for human well being may have adverse impact on the environment also. To keep the net impact positive is critical for sustainable development. For mineral processing industry, the value of a mineral is in the actual value as perceived by the end user. The process designs, investments in technology development all have direct relationship with the value of use and making a net positive impact on our ecosystem The value proposition has shifted towards raw materials and is a big differentiator. The availability of good quality raw material is difficult or is available at a premium. The challenge today is to develop green technologies that make effective and efficient usage of low grade raw materials The low grade raw materials as available pose a significant opportunity for human race for delivering value. They offer an easier reach to a value as perceived in end use but the journey is full of challenges. The first challenge is development of technology for maximizing grade recovery as required by the downstream process. The second challenge is to make the technology viable so that it contributes value to end use and the third challenge is to keep the net impact of the process positive The mining and mineral processing fraternity, being at the beginning of this value chain is set to take the first step in this journey for a tryst with ultimate human well being. The quality of iron ore pellets, represented in terms of parameters such as cold compressive strength (CCS) and Tumble Index (TI), has a strongly influence on the productivity and energy of reduction furnaces like the blast furnace and on the quality of hot metal or liquid iron. The main objective of pelletization operations is to produce iron ore pellets of desirable specifications and ensure high levels of plant productivity and energy efficiency. Advanced process control of an industrial iron ore pellet induration process using a soft sensor for pellet quality and fuzzy-logic based control algorithm is described in this paper. The pellet quality soft sensor consists of a rigorous mathematical model of the induration process and a statistical model for the pellet quality parameters. The mathematical model is based on the fundamental principles of heat and mass transfer between gases and pellets, kinetics of drying and condensation of moisture, combustion of coke, calcination of limestone, and melting and solidification of pellets. The predictions of wind-box temperature profiles are in close agreement with the measured profiles. The time-temperature profiles of the pellets during induration, along with raw material characteristics and induration process operating conditions, are used as inputs to the quality model to predict cold compressive strength and the Tumble Index. The predictions of the quality soft sensor along with the rules based on fuzzy-logic derived from simulation results and operator experience are then utilized to control the induration process to achieve precise control of the quality parameters and to optimize the induration process in terms of fuel efficiency and productivity. The mathematical model is also utilized as a soft sensor for temperature, moisture and composition profiles of pellets and gases. Results of implementation of this model-based control strategy on an industrial scale induration process will be presented. This presentation identifies how mineral (coal included) processing profession should look at the challenges (threats) being faced by mineral industry. Presently, the focus is more on supply and demand on minerals. In addition, the R&D activities in the chain of mine-to-metal are paying more attention (if not only on) the processes being adopted, development of new equipments and modeling and simulation. But the profession is grossly ignoring aspects such as impact of the processes on other resources, of the ways we extract, use and dispose them socio-economically and efficiently. A business model which may encompass all these dimensions are essential for the sustainable development of mineral industry and a possible approach in this direction is presented. To start with, for the sustainable growth and existence, the profession must be aware of the prospective impacts of their activities on critical factors such as ? political (changing government policies), geographical (environment, land, water and habitat), which have major bearing on the survival and growth of the industry. Mineral Processing professionals have to join hands with mining engineers to answer some relevant questions related to the impact of mineral industry on society. Mining can become economically viable only if mineral processing engineers come out with innovative solutions to reduce capital and operating costs. The solutions have to be adoptable and practically feasible so that industry looks at us for directions. In fact, we have to move towards beneficiation of nano particles striving towards zero waste. Some of the gaps in the knowledge of procedures being followed in the design and operation of processing plants are highlighted. Enhancing the knowledge base for solving unexplored possibilities, solutions to evolve sustainable development measures which demands innovation both at academic and practicing levels is the need of the future. Well-structured academic programmes are to be formulated so that the graduates of these programmes can make an effort to look at processes/concepts with a new insight and approach; the profession should excite the young brains with challenges. R&D funding agencies have to have a long-term perspective on mineral processing so that closer interactions between academic institutes, industry and R&D organizations are sustainable and that innovations are at least a few years ahead of needs of future challenges. An attempt to produce fuel from biomass waste by hydrothermal treatment has been made with expectation to effectively utilize a renewable source of energy and an unexploited energy resource. In this paper, we have used empty fruit bunch (EFB) that is a residue after recovery of crude palm oil from palm oil trees in a plantation in a tropic country. A hydrothermal treatment was conducted using a 500 mL autoclave, with alkali (K2CO3) catalyst. EFB was decomposed more by alkali catalyst of lower alkali content and rather polymerized in higher catalytic region. The functional group composition of the solid phase oil is similar independent of alkali content, however its burning characteristic became more incombustible with increasing alkali content.

This paper presents a new process for producing industrial magnesium sulphate using waste water from titanium white plant and magnesium oxide from calcinations of magnesite ore as raw materials. With the laboratory experimental equipment, the waste liquid and magnesium dioxide react effectively at ambient temperature and under atmosphere pressure. Via the press filter, a clear liquid predominately containing magnesium sulphate is obtained. It is further evaporated and crystallized by cooling, separated by centrifuge and dried. Consequently a high quality of industrial magnesium sulphate is achieved as the final product. In the course of process, as the majority of valuable component (SO42-) is recovered in the final product, most of impurities from waste acid is being removed into the by- product. With the simple operational process, it is possible for titanium dioxide plant to resolve the environmental problem completely and benefit from the industrial magnesium sulphate product as well. The filter cakes containing valuable elements such as Mg, S, Fe, Mn, V, Ti are by-product proposed to be used for manufacture of agriculture fertilizer particularly for peanut planting.

The nitrate content is an important factor for environmental water samples and flour. In a 0.35 mol/L H2SO4-2NO solution, has a strong catalyzing function on the decolourization of Gallocya-nine (GC) oxidated by NaBrO3. Based on this, a novel method was developed to measure the NO and -3NO concentrations in water and flour. The flow injection technology was introduced into the analysis system. A single-valve dual- cingulums to inject which the Copperized-Cadmium slice and the reduction zone are isolated. The optimum solution for this method contains 1.48×10-4 mol/L GC, 0.06 mol /L NaBrO3 and 0.2 mol /L of NH4-2NOCl. Two empirical equations were proposed to calculate the and -3NO concentrations based on the measured signals. It can be used to measure -2NO of from 0.001 mg / L to 2.0 mg/L and -3NO of from 0.002 mg / L to 2.5 mg/L. The measurement frequency can be up to 20 samples / h. The relative standard deviation for eleven samples is less than 5%.

In recent years, heap leaching of gold is becoming wide spread due to low capital and operational costs that allows economically feasible processing of low-grade and cut-off grade ores. Currently, over 30 heap leach projects are operated in Russia. Some of the deposits treated by heap leach methods are almost depleted. Therefore, they will soon require spent heaps detoxification and reclamation. Traditionally, spent heaps are detoxified by chemical treatment. This process is characterized by relatively high kinetics and requires expensive reagents and additional equipment. The main disadvantage of this process is secondary contamination of the solutions by products of detoxification reactions and impurities contained in reagents. If there is enough time, spent heaps can be detoxified by natural degradation. The advantages of the proposed method are low operational costs due to use of existing heap leaching facilities and eliminating the need for chemicals for spent heaps detoxification. Residual concentrations of cyanides and thyocyanates in liquid phase (wet ore) of spent gold ore heaps after detoxification were 0.2~0.3 mg/L. Heavy metals were almost completely removed. The method was successfully used for detoxification of spent heaps at two gold mines.

The floatability of coal is affected by the presence of dissolved inorganic ions in plant process water. Water quality is characterized in terms of conductivity, hardness, turbidity and composition of oil. These quality indices are correlated with coal flotation performance for three different water named, ?R&D laboratory tap water?, ?process untreated water? from West Bokaro wahsey-2 Tata Steel, India and ?process treated water? after passing laboratory developed treatment process. The study clearly indicated that a significant quantity of clean coal is being lost due to poor process water quality used in the flotation process. The laboratory investigations showed that if these dissolved salts and suspended solids are reduced to even 50%, a clean coal yield improvement by minimum 5%~10% at the same ash level could be expected. Therefore, the conventional practice of water recycling though a thickener or a tailings pond needs a complete re-look. The water treatment process for recycled water has also been discussed for improving the process water quality as well as enhancement in flotation performance efficiency.

This paper presents the consequences of modernization and expansion of process plant by implementing SAG and Ball Mill and Carbon-in-pulp technology at the Hutti Gold Mine. From the inception of the process plant, it has undergone many changes for the improvement. In the beginning, only gravity recovery of gold was carried out by using Pebble Mills and Strake Tables. Later amalgamation, Cyanidation and Zinc precipitation and finally Carbon-in-pulp gold recovery system was implemented. Grinding plant was modernized by implementing SAG and Ball Mill and Knelson concentrator for free gold recovery as a result, the production rate, rate of recovery, reduced man power, Modernization and expansion of process plant has also yielded in safe and smooth running of the plant.
