This paper is intended to call attention to the manifold uses of limestone in industry; to indicate the types of limestone desired by some of the large consuming industries; and to give some information on the resources of limestone in Canada, so that an idea may be obtained of the present and future possibilities for limestone production. The word limestone is used in the usual broad sense to include both high-calcium limestone and the highly magnesian variety known as dolomite, as well as all intermediate types. Lime is simply calcined limestone, and in this general paper its uses have been included with those of raw limestone. It is of interest, in dealing with this subject, to glance back over the early history of the utilization of limestone, for by so doing we see that limestone has been of importance to mankind since the beginning of civilization and has contributed in no small measure to the development of a number of the arts and sciences. One of the first uses, if not the first use, of limestone was in connection with the making of lime for plastering purposes. This use antedates civilization. In the day of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the art of plastering had been brought to a state of perfection that is not nearly approached by the modern artisan.

Past attempts to establish an integrated steel industry on the West Coast of Canada have been unsuccessful for at least three reasons: (a) insufficient reserves of a suit-able iron ore supply; (b) a relatively small local market for iron and steel; and (c) the non-availability of an economical process to produce primary iron on a small scale. Today, the reserves of economically mineable ore deposits are ample to support a steel production of 100,000 to 200,-000 tons per annum. The local market has increased so as to be able to absorb most of this capacity. With-in the next few years, a small integrated steel plant, including the "H-Iron" direct iron ore reduction process for electric furnace charge stock production, will be able to show a profitable operation. This paper reviews the circumstances that led to the development and construction of a commercial-scale vertical shaft carbonizer at Conmore, Alberta. This form coking process may be regarded as having potential application in other areas. Coal pelletizing offers a promising method of decreasing coal agglomeration costs under certain circumstances. Pellets can be rolled easily from -35-mesh coal, provided that a minimum of -200-mesh coal is present. Bentonite was found to be the best binder and was most effective when added in amounts of about 2 per cent. The water content of the coal pellets was observed to vary from 18 to 23 per cent. As a by-product of this investigation, it seems possible that fine coal could be converted into stoker feed by this process. A short investigation of the effect of heating rate on the carbonization of pellets was conducted. "Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. The processing facility consisted of two separate processing plants for oxide and sulphide ores. The oxide plant processed oxide ore bearing gold and silver ore using cyanide leaching and Merrill Crowe processes, while the sulphide plant produced a copper concentrate using conventional flotation. Cormidom is a commendatory example how mineral processing facilities can co-exist in balance with the environment. In 2014, natural occurring copper oxide contamination with finer grained copper-zinc sulphide mineralisation was expected to dominate the sulphide ore body. In anticipation Cormidom contacted the original plant designer Met-Chem to assist in overcoming this challenge. Test work indicated that increased flotation time and subsequent very fine grinding were required. Met-Chem provided the detailed engineering and Cormidom proceeded with the expansion project internally. Currently Cormidom has processed the sulphide ore successfully by implementing flotation modifications. This paper describes the history of Cormidom, test work on the “new” ore body, modification in process design in the Cu-Zn sulphide flotation circuit, construction and implementation.INTRODUCTIONCorporación Minera Dominicana (CORMIDOM) was a wholly owned subsidiary of GlobeStar Mining Corporation (a Canadian based minerals exploration company) with extensive exploration of base and precious metals in the Dominican Republic. In 2007-2008 CORMIDOM constructed the Cerro de Maimom project. The company was subsequently sold and purchased by Perilya Limited from Australia in 2013. Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. It is near the town of Maimón in Monsenor, Nouel Province (see Figure 1)."

"Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest Maritime Province, is located in the southwestern part of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Province is more or less centrally located in the Maritimes Basin, a large intermontane basin within the Appalachian orogenic belt. The Maritimes Basin is subdivided into sub-basins and uplifts which exhibit two dominant structural trends: east and northeast. The Basin is known to be petroliferous because of the seeps, shows, oil shales and albertite found in southern New Brunswick and northern Nova Scotia and the gas and oil produced from the Stony Creek field near Moncton, New Brunswick.Permian beds are exposed on the Island, mostly along sea-cliffs. A maximum thickness of about 5,000 feet of red beds -shales, sandstones and conglomerates -make up the sequence. Over most of the Island, the Permian section is much thinner. Four key wells (Mississippian tests) and several shallower tests have been drilled. The Pennsylvanian-Mississippian section thickens rapidly off the Port Hill Uplift at the northwest, where it is less than 4,600 feet thick, and continues to thicken to about 20,000 feet in the Cumberland Basin at the southeast. Geological and geophysical data combine to give us the structural picture of the deeper beds.Prospective reservoir rocks are primarily in the Missis-sippian Horton and Windsor groups. Prospects are:-1. on or over structural highs in the basement; 2. on anticlines or fault highs; 3. over or peripheral to salt domes or salt-core anticlines; 4. at truncation pinchouts of Mississippian prospective beds; 5. in basal sandstone or granite wash on the pre-Carboni-ferous basement; and 6. in facies traps at changes from sandstone to shale or porous to tight carbonate rocks."

Open pit mine plans define the complex strategy of displacement of ore and waste over the mine life. The objective of the mine plan is to maximize the future cash flows within the technical and physical constraints. Various mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulations have been used for production scheduling of open pit mines. In the MILP formulation the slope constraints guarantee that all the overlying blocks are mined prior to mining a given block. Traditionally, the slope constraints have been modeled with cone templates representing the required wall slopes of the open pit mine. The overall pit slopes constructed by these templates are a function of the width and height of the geological block model. Therefore, the overall slopes are fixed in one bearing. This paper presents a general MILP model for open pit mine scheduling with variable slopes constraints. The methodology utilizes a directed graph to capture the precedence of extraction of blocks and pit slopes in different bearings. Depth-first-search algorithm was used to traverse the graph for constructing the slope constraints in the MILP problem. TOMLAB/CPLEX was used as the implementation platform to efficiently integrate the mathematical solver package CPLEX with MATLAB. A case study on intermediate scheduling of an iron ore mine over twelve periods was carried out to validate the models.

Malagash received its name from the Indians many years ago on acco.unt of its turbid (milky) waters, although,' the red men did not appreciate the significance of this turbidity, and were, of course, entirely ignorant of the crystal beds of pure salt that lay beneath their feet. The salt lake of the Mississippian, or Lower Carboniferous period, in which these beds occur, was apparently a large one, for there is evidence of its existence at intervals all the way from Sydney, Cape Breton, to St. John, New Brunswick, 300 miles as the crow flies, and there is no knowing what its other dimensions may have been, as much of this horizon is now buried on the one side beneath the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and on the other underneath the Atlantic ocean. About midway of the area and underlying the counties of Colchester and Cumberland, there occurs a synclinal basin of which the Malagash salt outcrop forms only a small portion of its northern limit. This basin has been described very fully by A. C. Hayes. (1) The operations carried on at Malagash since Hayes wrote his report have brought to light very little in the way of new geological data, except to confirm his pre-dictions as to the probable faulting of the salt strata, and the effect which these faults would have on mining operations.

"The Hardy Cross algorithm offers a reliable method of solving network systems of fluid flow and has become widely used for solving water and ventilation flow networks. A limitation is that computational iterations and time to solve a network rises rapidly with the size of the model and modern detailed ventilation networks have typically grown to thousands of airways. Non-linear matrix solving methods can offer improved performance, however these are more complex and may be unstable if initial estimates are poor. This paper presents improvements that can be applied to the traditional Hardy Cross algorithm to greatly reduce iterations and solving time for large ventilation models. INTRODUCTION The Hardy Cross algorithm (Cross, 1936), was originally developed to solve water flow in city and urban pipe networks. Using principles of Kirchhoff’s electricity current laws, Hardy Cross developed an iterative algorithm for solving non-linear equations associated with network water flow. Traditional network analysis research refers to the various members of system networks as branches, nodes and meshes. This terminology has been changed in this paper to airways, junctions and loops respectively which are terms more familiar to engineers in mine ventilation. When Kirchhoff’s laws are applied to fluid networks, the following assumptions can be made: •The sum of fluid flows into a junction must equal the sum of fluid flows out of the junction.•The sum of pressure losses around any loop through a network system must be equal to zero.An iterative solution can therefore be achieved by initially guessing flow in a network, calculatingthe pressure losses around the network loops (Figure 1), and applying flow corrections using Newton’s method for each loop if the sum of the pressure losses does not equal zero. To solve the system, a loop must be defined for every segment or series of segments between a junction of 3 or more airways.The Hardy Cross algorithm has been used extensively for ventilation network analysis since the introduction of the first electronic computers (Tien, 1997), however numerous other variations and methods have since been developed through the use of matrices to solve the required system of nonlinear equations. Commonly used algorithms such as the Newton Raphson method (Brown, 1969), the Gradient method (Todini & Pilati, 1988), the Linear Theory method (Gupta & Prasad, 2000), and Coupled Network Solver (G. Danko, 2008) have found general use in fluid flow network solvers (Rossman, 2000). Despite poor and sometimes unpredictable convergence performance however, the Hardy Cross algorithm still has unique properties that make it attractive for ventilation models. Some benefits are:"

"Sulphide mineral flotation operations continuously strive for a balance between mineralogy, mineral liberation, circuit conditions and reagent solutions to maximize the production rate and recovery of payable metals. The Taseko Gibraltar copper – molybdenum mill operations underwent an extensive project focusing on the fundamentals to identify the effects of process conditions and mineral liberation to improve the bulk circuit copper – molybdenum recovery efficiencies in the bulk flotation circuits. This discussion will provide process data that demonstrates; 1) fundamental relationship between mineral liberation to recovery and grade, 2) flotation circuit condition testing and optimization, 3) reagent combinations resulting in efficient/economical mineral recovery, and 4) the development of a xanthate free reagent solution. The data presented and discussed will also touch on flotation parameters including pH, retention time, kinetics and the effect on bulk circuit recovery performance.INTRODUCTION Taseko's is the owner (75%) and operator of the Gibraltar copper-molybdenum mine, located in south-central British Columbia, the second largest open pit copper mine in Canada and the largest employer in the Cariboo region. Taseko restarted Gibraltar in 2004. From 2006 until 2012, the company invested ~$700 million to expand and modernize the operation which was originally scheduled for demolition when the company acquired it in 1999. In the spring of 2011, construction commenced for Gibraltar Development Plan 3 (GDP3). GDP3 included the construction of a standalone 30,000 ton per day concentrator, built adjacent to the existing 55,000 ton per day facility. The new design capacity of Gibraltar was designed to be 85,000 tons per day. An integral part of the project was a new molybdenum recovery facility. In addition to the new concentrator, the mining fleet was upgraded with a new mining shovel, production drill and ten haul trucks (Taseko, May 2015). In May of 2015, the Company completed an updated mine plan for Gibraltar featuring a 50% decrease in strip ratio. This new mine plan was a result of a detailed, six-month engineering study and forms the basis of an updated NI 43-101 compliant reserve (Taseko Announces Improved Economics At Its Gibraltar Copper Mine, 2015). The new mine plan took into account lower milling costs as a result of the modernized processing facilities (Taseko, May 2015)."

INTRODUCTION I WELCOME the opportunity to speak on Programmes in Safety. The invitation to do so shows that those guiding affairs of the Institute in this District realize the practical importance of this subject. My remarks are intended primarily for mines having 100 to 400 employees, approximately. With minor modifications, however, they apply also to larger or smaller operations. Others, I hope, will derive benefit from this paper, for they, too, have a part to play in accident prevention; for example, contractors such as shaft-sinkers; manufacturers of equipment; and consultants and designers of mining, milling, and metallurgical methods. These troubled times stress, as never before, the importance of efficient operations in mining. The days are gone when neglect can be afforded. Safe working conditions and satisfied employees are essential for efficient production at reasonable cost. The mining industry of Ontario long has been keenly aware of the human aspects of this subject, and as a whole it has done much to decrease the frequency and severity of disabling accidents. The number of fatalities per 1,000 employees has been reduced from a high of 5 some two decades ago to an all-time low of 0.89 in 1948; the incidence was slightly higher in 1949, being 1.17 per 1,000. The reduction in non-fatal compensable accidents also has been outstanding, frequency having ?been reduced from over 200 per 1,000 employees some two decades ago to 54 per 1,000 at the producing mines in 1949. These statistics demonstrate progress. Nevertheless, the general picture still leaves much to be desired when viewed from two other angles.

Experiments investigating the treatment of a ground wood white water waste from an Ontario pulp and paper mill by an HVCB coal are reported. Adsorption capacity for the waste, with a soluble COD contribution of 2,100 mg/I, amounted to 0.17 per cent, by weight, of the Nova Scotia coal used. Percolation of the white water waste through a coal bed indicated that soluble COD is removed. For finely ground coals, over 90 per cent of the suspended solids in the waste are retained on the coal. Plugging of the coal bed is rapid, so that any treating process using filtration would have to renew the surface of the bed frequently.

This paper presents the beneficial effects of non-oxidative leaching of final and intermediate copper sulfide concentrates with sulfuric acid prior to the final cleaning stage of flotation. This unique process, combining leaching and flotation, appears to be advantageous for difficult-to-treat carbonate-bearing Polish copper ores, such as those processed in copper concentrators at KGHM Polish Copper. It was shown that after the chemical decomposition of about 70 % of the total carbonates naturally present in the flotation feed, a considerable enhancement of subsequent flotation results (both grade and recovery). The resulting products of non-oxidative leaching are solid hydrated calcium sulfate (gypsum), soluble magnesium sulfate and gaseous carbon dioxide. The beneficial effect established by the laboratory leaching tests was subsequently confirmed during a pilot plant operation treating final copper concentrate and a problematic intermediate concentrate at the Lubin concentrator.

COMPLETED in November, 1943, at a cost of over $1,500,000, Elk River colliery of the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company, Limited, has been laid out and equipped for an ultimate annual production of 1,000,000 tons and replaces the recently closed Coal Creek plant, which has been operated by the Company for the past forty-five years. The project has involved the opening of mines in three seams, the construction of a complete set of colliery buildings, including a modern preparation plant of 360 tons per hour capacity, and the laying out of the necessary yard tracks and spur connecting the new development with the Company-owned Morrissey, Fernie and Michel railway, which, in turn, connects with the Canadian Pacific railway at Fernie. The colliery is three and a half miles east of Fernie, B.C., near the southern end of the Crow's Nest coal field, which contains the largest and most important body of coal in the Province of British Columbia. The coal-bearing horizon is the Kootenay formation, present in the form of a syncline covering an area of 230 square miles. Most of the coal seams occur in the lower 2,000 feet of the formation, the covering beds being largely coarse sandstones and conglomerates of great thickness, the presence of which accounts largely for the preservation of the coal measures. James McEvoy, in the report of the Geological Survey of Canada for the year 1900, states that the basin appears to contain a fairly constant coal content of nearly 172 feet in 23 seams of a thickness of one foot or over. Coal has been mined in the Fernie district since 1897 and the first shipments were made from Coal Creek colliery in the following year, over the then newly constructed British Columbia Southern railway. Since that time, a total of over 16,000,000 tons of coal has been produced, an average of 350,000 tons per year. The7ears of peak production were 1910, 1912, and 1913, with an all-time high of 924,000 tons in 1913. The lowest output in the history of Coal Creek was that for the year 1933, when only 60,340 tons were produced, the colliery being closed for some months. Present production from Elk River colliery averages 1,150 tons per day, the output being considerably less than it could be were sufficient man-power available.

The iron ore question in this country has been widely discussed for many years, but only recently has its real significance becoming generally understood. The exhaustion of the old Helen mine, in 1918, marked the last phase of hematite production in Ontario, and with the closing of the Magpie mine in 1921 , Canada ceased to be a producer of iron ore. For the past three years every ton of ore used in Canadian blast furnaces has been imported. In a recent issue of the Engineering and Mining Journal-Press, Arthur B. Pearsons, Assistant Editor, makes the following statement : Iron dominates the world. Some contend that coal is more vital. be-cause heat is needed to make iron and steel. But there are other sources of energy, more convenient and less costly and it is only a question of time when progress in hydro-electric development will have reached the point where coal will be but an incidental source of power and heat. Even more direct means than the generation of electricity by hydro-power eventu-ally will be developed by making available the latent energy of the sun. But iron; Science gives not the vaguest suggestion that anything will dis-place iron and steel as the most essential material tool of modem civiliza-tion. ? Hardness, tenacity, malleability-it possesses all these in unique de-gree. These are some of the qualities that make steel and iron indispensable in modern industry. The domestic consumption per inhabitant of the United States has climbed uniformly from 0.18 tons in 1900, to 0.36 tons in 1922. New kinds of machines and new types of structures are being devised every year; and steel or iron is the basis of most of them." It is unlikely that the Ontario Government were actuated by this motive when they appointed the Iron Ore Committee to investigate and report on the iron ore situation, nevertheless, these facts must have influenced them in some degree.

Rockbursts are sudden and violent failure of rocks in deep and/or high stress mines, which may destroy the excavation space and cause an accident or even the death of mining workers. This study is motivated by the pervasiveness of rockbursts all round the world. It has been found that rockbursts are often stimulated by dynamic fluctuation which is generated by mining operations or other sources of vibrations, such as blasting in adjacent stopes. This paper attempts to investigate the dynamically stimulating mechanism of pillar rockbursts in hard rock mines from an innovative point of view. Rockbursts are classified into triggered rockbursts and induced rockbursts in accordance with the magnitude of the stimulation force. Triggered rockbursts occur only when a small fraction of stress changes associated with rockbursts is accounted for by the causative excavation, whereas induced rockbursts happen where the causative factor is responsible for most of the stress changes required to produce the rockburst. By considering rockbursts as a dynamic instability problem of structures, rigorous mathematical models are set up for triggered rockbursts and induced rockbursts, respectively. By using the method of averaging and the method of eigenvalue problems, the boundaries of rockburst occurrence of a pillar are obtained for these two rockbursts. A new explanation of the failure mode of fretting or necking of pillars is given, the perturbation effect for pillar rockbursts is found, and the parametric resonance mechanism of pillar rockbursts is revealed. The quantitative relation between blasting parameters and pillar rockbursts obtained can be directly used to control the rockbursts. Contrary to conventional methods where only rock materials or rock specimen were used to study rockbursts, this investigation attaches more attention on the structural effect on rockbursts, which have strong potential applications in deep mining.

Nautilus Minerals Inc the world?s leader in exploration and development of deep ocean mineral resources is today focused on the recovery of high grade copper-gold from in seafloor massive sulphide mineralization. These mineralized belts, analogous to land based volcanogenic massive sulphides (VMS) deposits are located near tectonic plate boundaries of the Western Pacific and around the world. Nautilus; first development project is Solwara 1 located in benign waters in Papua New Guinea. Since 2006 the company has completed detailed environmental and geological studies at Solwara 1, culminating in a number of world firsts, including the first Environmental Permit for a deep ocean mineral project and the first NI 43-101 compliant seafloor massive sulphide resource statement. Nautilus has relied heavily on proven deepwater technologies from the oil and gas industry in the design of the first mineral extraction system. Pipeline trenching units, workclass ROVs, deepwater production risers and drill cutting removal systems will all be adapted at Solwara 1. Key contractors to the project have all been selected for their deepwater experience, creativity and determination to launch this new industry. Innovation is at the forefront of Nautilus? success to date. This paper gives an overview of the Solwara 1 development and describes the exploration and production technologies adapted for seafloor mineral extraction.

Introduction The principal primary iron and steel producing capacity of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation is at the Dominion Iron and Steel, Limited, plant at Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The main raw materials are Cape Breton coal, Wabana (Newfoundland) iron ore, and Port-au-Port (Newfoundland) limestone. This plant, which was established at the turn of the century has gradually expanded its production facilities so that today its ingot producing capacity is over 720,000 tons annually. Principal operating units of the plant at present are three batteries of 173 Koppers by-product coke ovens with conventional by-product recovery equipment, three blast furnaces .of 15 ft. 6 in., 18 ft. 3 in., and 19 ft. 3 in. hearth diameter (inside the brick), one 700-ton hot metal mixer, ten open hearth furnaces (two of 175-ton capacity, three 12 5-ton, five 60-ton), one 10-ton electric furnace, a 40-inch blooming mill, a billet mill, a rail mill, a tie plate mill, rod and bar mills, and a wire and nail mill. Extensive machine shops and an iron and brass foundry are also available for plant maintenance and repairs. This paper will describe developments during the past five years and those now in process. It will also briefly discuss research being done and indicate the direction of future development.

"Shales play a major role in the stability of slopes, both natural and engineered. This paper attempts to provide a review of the state-of-the-art in shale slope stability. The complexities of shale terminology and classification are first reviewed followed by a brief discussion of the important physical and mechanical properties of relevance to shale slope stability. The varied mechanisms of shale slope stability are outlined and their importance highlighted by reference to international shale slope failures. Stability analysis and modelling of anisotropic rock slope masses are briefly discussed and the potential role of brittle rock fracture and damage highlighted. A short review of shale slopes in open pits is presented.INTRODUCTIONShales have been stated to form approximately 58% of sedimentary rock so it is not surprising that they are frequently encountered in both natural and engineered slopes. They represent challenging environments for slope stability due to the wide variation in their engineering properties, their changing behaviour with time due to geomorphic processes and the variation in the failure mechanisms as a function of both stratigraphy and tectonics. An extensive body of literature exists on the terminology and classification relevant to shales; it is not possible in the scope and length of the current paper to review these works in detail and the reader is referred to Farrokhrouz and Asef (2013), Bell (2000) and Goodman (1993) for detailed discussions. It is arguably the case that no universally accepted classification of shales exists today and depending on the field of application the terminology varies widely. Shales in slope stability, for the purpose of this keynote paper, are taken to include material varying in properties from weak rocks to soils and therein lies one of the most challenging aspects in shale slope characterisation for engineering purposes. They have been classified as “rock-like” or “soil-like’, (Underwood 1967) or compacted and cemented, Table 1, Yagiz (2001). Classifications have considered numerous factors including composition, cementation and a wide range of engineering properties.The propensity of shales to degrade with time due to geomorphic processes has resulted in an important aspect in their classification, that is, the attempts to incorporate slaking, durability and swelling and softening behavior through purpose developed testing methods (Gamble 1971, Morgenstern and Eigenbrod, 1974). Figures 1 and 2 show examples of terminology used to describe argillaceous materials and some proposed engineering classification schemes (Grainger 1984 and Bott 1986). Corominas (2014) provides a recent classification of argillaceous rocks and their durability relating five stages of slope deterioration to the texture of the rock on Ternary diagrams. No attempt will be made here to discuss the merits of the proposed terminology and classifications, suffice it to say, that the controversy and flux surrounding these issues is a strong indicator of the complexities in the behavior of these materials. In this paper the author will consider slope stability in the materials indicated in Table 1, Figures 1 and 2 without undue focus on terminology. At the lower strength limit of shales the engineer must design slopes using the principles of soil mechanics which may vary from the simple Mohr Coulomb plasticity constitutive criterion to modified critical state models, some even attempting to incorporate softening behaviour in the weaker clay shale materials. Given the transitional nature of shale materials several workers have treated overconsolidated clays and clay shales using concepts such as peak and residual shear strength, brittleness index and softening. Introduction The invitation to contribute a discussion on some of the broader features of the mineral deposits of our Cordillera seemed acceptable enough when presented several months ago. More mature consideration has impressed upon me the difficulty of making any constructive or very helpful contribution in the short time available and with my limited inspiration. Dr. Lang deserves our real gratitude for his general paper of nineteen pages at the beginning of the Volume. Into it, with the help of two diagrams and seven tabular summaries, he has packed a lot of useful information and has analyzed along several lines the data of the Volume's twenty-eight detailed papers on our mines and camps. He has added additional facts from his own knowledge of the region. I am sure that, like myself and the whole fraternity, he feels especially grateful to the eleven company geologists who found time to contribute detailed descriptions of mines they have studied. The Regional Situation With the Jubilee Volume and two recent publications of great value from the Geological Survey, we are more up-to-date on Cordilleran geology than we have ever been. But I would like to emphasize that we still have but fragmentary information. Brief study of G.S.C. Map 932A will illustrate this. Our knowledge of the Rocky mountains is limited to two narrow sections along the main railway lines, a somewhat larger area from the border north along the Mesozoic coal-bearing basins, and some reconnaissance along Peace river and the Alaska highway. There is some additional information on old maps, particularly those by G. M. Dawson, but it is very much of the 'exploratory' type. The other mapped areas are chiefly in the accessible region south of 'fifty-one', in the central part adjacent to and spreading north, recently, from the Canadian National railway, and along the edges of the Coast Range.
