To extract uranium from low-grade, calcrete-hosted uranium (CHU) ore is challenging owing to the presence of carbonate and swelling clay gangue minerals that require an alkaline lixiviant to be used. Western Australia possesses ~75 000 U3O8 t in CHU resources. Improvements to alkaline leach extraction practices would improve the economic potential of these deposits.A column leach study of CHU ore was run for 105 days using an alkaline carbonate-bicarbonate lixiviant. The uranium content of the liquor plateaued after 75 days at ~275 mg U/L; the calculated maximum solution capacity was 800 mg U/L. Spiked peaks and troughs were seen in the data set beyond the 60th day, where concentrations ranged from 220 - 290 mg U/L, indicating possible cyclic uptake and loss of uranium from the solution.Pristine and leached ore samples were geochemically analysed and mineralogically characterised at high resolution using a field emission gun-electron probe micro-analyser (FEG-EPMA). Results showed that leached ore samples from the top of the column contained less carnotite than pristine ore. In contrast, leached ore samples from the column base contained regions with more carnotite than pristine ore, indicating precipitation. Three carnotite grain micro-structures were identified in the leached ore; fan-spherulite, granular and core-shell cubes, with evidence for multiple growth phases.Evidence of carnotite precipitation was seen at the edge of and in pore spaces within montmorillonite and dolomite grains. The point of zero charge of both minerals is lower than the pH of the lixiviant (pH 10.8), thus the mineral surfaces are negatively charged and would not attract UO2(CO3)34- ions out of solution. Similarly, the decrease in the uranium content of the lixiviant is not attributed to super-saturation, as this was unlikely to have been achieved. All companies and individuals who embark on a business venture incur costs. For the most part these costs can be conveniently categorised, firstly into capital and operating costs and then into the various elements of these major cost centres. Although the nature of expenditure naturally differs as between industries certain broad cost types are characteristic of all heavy industries. The capital costs of gaining access to an orebody, equipping a new mine, building a treatment plant and perhaps refining and smelting facilities are likened to capital expenditure by a manufacturer on new plant and equipment required for an expansion or new product innovation. Similarly the day to day costs of labour and materials employed in the running of a mining operation can be likened to similar costs in other heavy industry. There is another group of costs that are not so easily categorised. Most industries incur unavoidable costs that do not form part of the direct or capital costs of physical production. These costs include taxes and other payments to government and research expenditure. The mining industry has a particularly heavy burden of non-production costs and it is the objective here to highlight and analyse a few of them. These costs are exploration expenditure, infrastructure expenditure, royalties and income tax. This is not to suggest that these are the only major non-production costs that the mining industry needs to bear. The industry may incur significant costs for environment protection, land tenure maintenance and on liaising with Government on a wide variety of matters. It is for reasons of subject manageability that the list is confined to the four costs mentioned. For the mining industry, exploration and infrastructure expenditure, royalties and income tax have several distinguishing features. Firstly, they are generally proportionately large costs. Exploration and infrastructure expenditure for example, could well exceed mine development costs. Depending on how royalties are levied, they may be very high in relation to profits earned and many in fact exceed profits. Secondly, except for income tax, they are costs that are generally not payable by other industries. Exploration expenditure is in some respects comparable with industrial research and development. However, because mines are wasting assets exploration is necessary for survival, and it is likely to form a larger part of costs per dollar of profits or sales than R&D. It can therefore be said that exploration is of far more significance to the miner than R&D is to the typical industrial company. Furthermore, unlike exploration expenditure, R&D results are transportable and patents permitting, transferable. The infrastructure burden that miners must carry is unique to the industry. Whereas urbanised industry is not usually liable for the capital cost of power, water, transport, townships and community facilities, the miner must finance these projects himself. Neither the payment of royalties, nor of course, income tax are unique to the mining industry. Royalties are more properly described as a unique charge on some primary industries but however described, they are a charge that manufacturing and service industries do not have to pay. Whilst we all pay income tax, the mining industry's uniqueness derives from the special problem that the industry has in arriving at annual net income in view of the capital intensity of the industry, partly due to expenditure on infrastructure, the indefinite life of capital equipment and its unpredictable residual value, funds expended on exploration and long lead times associated with a mine development. The third distinguishing feature of these costs is that, with the possible exception of exploration expenditure, they are heavily influenced by the policies and actions of Government. As such the industry has a responsibility to promote the industry by emphasising its potential to improve national product including exports and by requesting that the Government provide for the industry in its long term planning and seek its co-operation to prevent the industry incurring inequitable penalties relative to other industries.Finally, exploration and infrastructure expenditure are significant because they are front-end charges on a project. When due allowance is given the time value of money and the deferment of income from a mining development to which they relate, exploration and infrastructure expenditure assume greater importance than the raw money expenditure suggests. For all these reasons, exploration and infrastructure expenditure, mining royalties and mining income tax are worthy of detailed study. This is the purpose of this paper. The objective is to examine the determinants that give rise to them and provide some thoughts on their impact on on-going and potential mining developments and, where relevant, to make some suggestions as to how they may be minimised.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston Open Pit is located on the eastern boundary of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder City and is mining an area traditionally known as the Golden Mile. The pit area has been continuously worked since 1893, predominantly by underground mining methods and more recently through open cut mining. There are over 2000 km of old mine headings and numerous stopes under the open pit area. KCGM has interpreted and digitised the underground mine plans and stope sections into a common database. A 2D-model software package, called Pits, was developed in-house and allows old workings to be displayed at any bench level; this is integrated with 3D Vulcan modelling software, which allows triangulated surfaces to be displayed. Almost every mining activity is affected by underground workings. The effective management of the interaction between current mining and the underground workings is very important for safety and production. A specific ævoidÆ management department has been formed and its broad objective is to minimise the impact of underground workings upon production while maximising safety. Special criteria and procedures have been developed and implemented to keep personnel and machinery from being exposed to unsafe ground. It is of primary importance to accurately define the location and outline of underground workings in advance. Probe drilling has been used as the key tool for that purpose. Various geophysical methods have also been trialled on site to detect underground workings; these are discussed in some detail. This paper discusses ævoidÆ management issues such as data integration, void detection and flagging. The impact of underground workings on mine planing, production and slope stability is also discussed.

This paper deals briefly with the geology and mineralisation of the Ediacara Mineral Field, which is located about 300 miles north of Adelaide in the Mount James Range.The field was discovered sane time prior to 1872. Total recorded production for the field amounts to a few hundred tons of lead and 36 tons of copper. Re-listing of the field during 1961-62 led to its classification as a Mississippi Valley type deposit. Diamond drilling has partly outlined the spread of mineralisation and confirmed its stratiform distribution,Sources for the metals are suggested and various possible mechanisms. of deposition are described.

The Prospero orebody is a part of the Helene mine at Cosmos and was scheduled to begin production in March 2008 after the exhaustion of the Tapinos orebody in the same mine. Treatment of the Tapinos orebody was challenging and it was envisaged that Prospero would have similar properties given that it was also anomalous in deleterious elements and would be of a similar mineral hosting. It was deemed necessary to undertake a metallurgical test work program to identify any potential processing issues, complex mineralogy or significant metallurgical domains. The paper discusses the processes which were employed to undertake the metallurgical test work program and describes the aspects that can be employed by other developers to quickly and effectively assess potential future orebodies. It will demonstrate that the work was successful at determining expected metallurgical behaviour, providing direction for mining operations and highlighting areas for more extensive research.

One of primary causes of poor blast performance is the improper relief of explosive energy. Under or over-confined blasts modify the explosiveÆs path of least resistance, which changes where and when the explosive energy is applied resulting in less than optimum blast performance. During the research for this paper the overbreak characteristics of five full-scale blasts were quantified using high speed cinematography and borehole cameras. The effectiveness of various overbreak control methods was also evaluated to guide design refinement. The results of this research along with general recommendations for reducing excessive damage are included with this paper.

Portland cement is the chief binding ingredient in mine backfill. In the presence of water, the chemical compounds within portland cement hydrate causing hardening and strength gain. During hydration, heat is generated. In certain cases, hydration heat may be produced significantly faster than it can be dissipated, which can create high temperatures in the underground environment. This paper presents the results of a series of investigations aimed at quantifying the heat generated by cemented backfill during hydration. Scaled stope models, instrumented with thermistors, were used in the investigation. Heat transfer to the hanging wall, orebody, footwall and cross-cut and production drifts was assessed during the backfill curing process and relationships between cement content, cure time, and heat generation were developed. The results of this work will assist mine operators in predicting the heat generated by cemented backfill and provide the necessary information to implement effective engineering control of heat in the underground environment.

Graham Hall and V. M. Cottle (Rosebery, Tas.) : In their paper on "The Mineralized Rift Valleys of Tasmania", Campana, Dickinson, King and Matheson have summarized a wealth of data from many sources. In proposing the new concept of a rift valley structure, they claim to have found a new guide to regional ore control and distribution in North-west Tasmania.Although the authors acknowledge suggestions made by us prior to publication of the pa:per, we are still at variance with their conclusions. We are not convinced that a rift valley structure exist~d when the Ordovician conglomerate was deposited. We are unable to find evidence for Cambrian deposition in a rift valley or reason to project the structure to embrace Hercules, Rosebery, and "possibly" Mt Bischoff.That the Great Lyell Fault (the authors' Owen Rift Fault) is a promising place to look for ore is not a new idea, but the existence of important ore deposits away from the structure reveals its inability to provide an adequate explanation of regional mineral distribution. A well-known structure that does have an influence on ore deposition is not discussed by the authors.STRUCTURAL CONSIDERATIONSThe great thickness of coarse unsorted Ordovician conglomerate lying in an elongate but narrow belt of country is presented as evidence of its deposition centrally within a rift valley, the position-of which is now said to be outlined by resistant slabs of the conglomerate. The marginal shears of the rift are said to show up well along the edges of the conglomerate.

Capcoal Mine has modified its water use practices over the past 15 years. Two issues have changed the way water was managed:an economic review of water supply options for a planned expansion of the coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP) in the early 1990s, and increasing neighbour concerns about discharge of worked water from the mine into the local streams. These issues resulted in commitment by the site General Manager to cease discharge of worked water from site and to convert from using raw water to worked water in the CHPP. Operational needs, societal demands and continuing dry weather are again demanding change to the siteÆs water management strategy. A colourimetric technique, originally developed for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC) based on the Komarowsky reaction, has been extended to a wide range of common mineral flotation frothers. The procedure, which is briefly described, is shown suited to on-site determinations in a campaign at Kennecott Utah Copper Copperton Concentrator (Rio Tinto). Some observations are described, including: frother (MIBC) concentration evolution down a bank, frother distribution between pulp and froth phases, and loss of frother over time due to adsorption on certain minerals. A possible interference with a fuel oil addition was overcome. MIBC in recycle water was also measured. The ability to monitor frother easily will help interpret gas dispersion behaviour and should permit further optimisation of flotation cell hydrodynamics and chemistry. The capability to directly measure should help optimise the type, amount and location of frother addition, and to assess frother recycled with reclaim process water.

Carbothermic reduction of iron oxide is an attractive mechanism to produce metallic iron, since it can directly utilise coal as both reductant and fuel. To improve energy efficiency and productivity of the metallic iron production based on this mechanism, the combustion bed process packed with the composites of iron oxide and coal powder was experimentally evaluated. The process has a potential of high heat efficiency since it can automatically utilise the heat of reduced materials as that necessary to the subsequent reduction of the composite by a large heat exchange rate between the packed particles and gas flowed across the bed. However, it is hard to perfectly prevent the reoxidation of formed metallic iron in the bed. The present paper reports the effect of coal content, pellet size and so forth on the reduction/metallisation degrees of the samples after the reduction experiment. It also discusses the effect of pretreatment of the composite pellets using CaO bearing materials to suppress the reoxidation of formed metallic iron in the bed.

The underground mine environment is inherently complex and hazardous, which necessitates ensuring mining workers’ safety. With the fast development of AI techniques, human activity recognition has become a crucial task to enhance daily life, especially in such challenging settings. This enables automatic monitoring and detection of the mine workers’ activities and operations on a large scale, which leads to better support of workers’ safety and welfare. Existing traditional uni-modal approaches, which use data of one single modality, suffer from low data quality and noise, so they struggle to generalise effectively in such extreme conditions (Li et al, 2022). As underground mines have extreme and complicated environments, such as dust, low light, signal interference, and rugged terrain, uni-modal approaches could not resolve such obstacles and are not suitable for real-world deployment. Multi-modal human activity recognition approaches could use data from multi-modal sources, thus capturing complementary information and producing robust and effective performance in recognising and monitoring mining activities. In this case, designing suitable multi-sensor hardware and AI activity recognition models has become a pivotal task. Producing efficient multi-modal approaches for edge deployment is another problem worth exploring.

Pressure filters were found to be necessary to produce Elura silver/lead and zinc concentrates at sufficiently low moisture contents for bulk cargo shipment by sea to smelters.The difficulty in obtaining low moistures was due to the fine primary grind, 80% passing 45 microns, and resultant fine concentrates, 97% passing 45 microns.The filtration system was designed to filter up to 90,000 tonnes/year silver/lead concentrates and up to 130,000 tonnes/year zinc concentrates.This paper details the preliminary test work to select Larox automatic pressure filters, and the commissioning and operation of these filters to achieve design criteria for both concentrates. The design criteria for both concentrates have been bettered due to the concentrates being coarser than the design sizing.

Nevertheless since the commencement of production in 1956, ilmenite has become the sixth most important mineral produced. The increasing world recognition of W.A. as a major' Iiroducer of ilmenite is due primarily ' to its low chromic oxide. ; (Cr203 content,, 0,03% to 0.04%, combined with a medium to high grade TiO2 content, 54% - 6 , supported by large reserves, a'. stable government with close access to good shipping facilities.. Ilmenite is produced from-these deposits at low-costs, enabling the industry to compete on world markets despite high rates for sea freights because of the distance from.major markets.

In 1999, the Henderson Mine commissioned the Henderson 2000 project - a new truck haulage level, a new underground crusher and a 24 kilometre conveyor system to replace a 23-year old rail haulage system. Henderson has been able to continuously improve in almost all aspects of its rubber-tired mining. The rail haulage system represented one of the last barriers to continuous improvement to the overall plant performance. Many of the lessons learned in other areas of the mine were utilised to design the truck level. This paper chronicles the benchmarking, equipment selection and design of the level. Areas covered will include haulage trucks, level layout, ore chute design, traffic control, road design and crusher layout.

In the case when the number of independent variables is greater, a careful design for carrying out tests has to be made in order to obtain, with the smallest possible number of tests, as much as possible neutral information about the influence of independent variables on the dependent ones. Only on the basis of such design and its statistical analysis it is possible to come to right conclusions about the function of the whole system. The influence of pressure, temperature, humidity and granulation of the coal upon the resistance to pressure and the water absorption of the briquettes has been tested, with the aim to examine how each of the two dependent variables changes depending on the values assumed by any of the four independent variables and which of the mentioned independent variables significantly influences the dependent ones. The full factorial design with 16 experiments and the central composite design with 27 experiments have been applied. The influence of the independent variables upon the dependent ones has been examined by applying the analysis of variance. The influence values of individual factors and their interaction upon the dependent variables have been stated as well as coefficients of curvilinear equation.
