There is considerable economic incentive to increase the angle of open pit walls so as to reduce the total volume of waste to be moved to gain access to an orebody. However, a number of slope failures has increased the awareness of mine operators to the potential and consequences of slope failure. Sophisticated methods for the analysis of slope stability have been developed but they rely on an understanding of the appropriate parameters to describe the structural properties of the slope materials. Unfortunately, these properties change with time.The excavation of an open pit mine removes the constraint and weight of the overlying material and allows the newly formed slope to release previously locked in stress. The release of this stress allows the opening of joints and leads to a significant reduction in bulk modulus. The rock mass is also further affected by damage from nearby blasts. Such damage is cumulative and further reduces the modulus of the near surface material and weakens the bonds between structural elements in the slope.

Mining and beneficiation can be described as sequential processes of separation of valuable minerals from waste. There is a great deal of interest in how the industry can be more effective – and efficient – with these processes. In particular, many mining companies are looking towards digital technologies to improve precision mining practices; that is, the targeted identification and separation of valuable ore from waste during the mining process. In feasibility studies the choice of optimum cut-off grade is typically based on an evaluation of tonnage grade curves and manual design of stopes at one or two cut-off grades. In the industry these stope designs are usually based on break-even cut-off grades, but there is little consensus on what cost and price assumptions ought to be included. A new tool for automated stope design has been developed that generates sets of stope shapes for a nominated range of cut-off grades, or depending on the nature of the mineralisation, cut-off values based on net smelter return calculations in the block model. The stope design procedure includes constraints in stope and pillar geometry for the selected mining method and can be used to evaluate sublevel interval and sensitivities to other design parameters in the specific geological and geotechnical environment. These ænested stopesÆ are analogous to ænested pitsÆ in open cut design, and can be used as a key input in the æhill of valueÆ methodology for the evaluation of the optimum cut-off grade in underground design. The results of many consulting studies indicate that a break-even cut-off grade will not be the optimum cut-off grade. A particular benefit of the new stope design tool is that the design rules used to establish stope shapes in the feasibility study can then be used in mine production, in an optimal and repeatable method. This methodology is being advanced in the AMIRA P884 PRIMO project, which is a new research collaboration coordinated by AMIRA International. The project has brought together active research groups in Australia and Canada, with the goal of developing a flexible framework and set of software tools for optimisation in underground mine design.

Mining regulatory authorities worldwide mandate frequent inspection of winder ropes used in shaft-equipped underground mines and ski lifts. Visual inspections are effective in identifying and assessing the type and severity of damage found in the exterior of the rope. In addition, electromagnetic or permanent magnet-based methods are used to identify broken wires, corrosion damage and other anomalies that occur anywhere within the core of wire ropes made of steel, which is a ferromagnetic material. The magnetic methods yield the loss of metallic area due to wire breaks and other damage in the ropeÆs section as well as local flaws that give rise to discontinuities in the magnetic field. The quantitative measurement of the loss of metallic area is indirectly related to the loss of breaking strength that is commonly used as a rope discard criterion. The ropes used in a mine winder in the Goldfields of Western Australia are inspected using Meraster 120B permanent magnet-based rope tester and their condition is assessed against published discard criteria.

Bivariate recoverable resource estimation aims at predicting the recovered metal for a secondary variable when a cut-off is applied to a primary variable. The choice of a consistent geostatistical model is advisable to allow a robust estimation from exploration data of the primary and secondary metal recovery functions on a generic selection block (selective mining unit û SMU) within large panels. Ore processing decisions at Lihir Gold LimitedÆs Lihir Gold Mine are based on the gold and sulfur estimates of SMUs from production (grade control) data. The predictive model from exploration data at Lihir is based on the estimation of a recoverable resource for gold by Uniform Conditioning (UC), with an estimate of the sulfur grade being provided by Ordinary Kriging of panels. While univariate UC is adapted to the diffusive nature of the gold mineralisation (Ladolam orebody) at Lihir, the independent estimation of sulfur, through ordinary kriging, fails to capture the potential spatial correlation that exists between gold and sulfur mineralisation. This paper presents a practical implementation of bivariate UC, which better represents in the resource model the spatial correlation between gold and sulfur. Incremental economic gains through improved definition of material categories and scheduling are investigated, and the particular impact on the process of geological interpretation and domaining is emphasised.

The initial development fl6tation testwork on Mt. Windarra op was completed on composited drill core intersections at the.Australian Mineral Development Laboratory. An exploratory winze provided samples, from the 130 M. level of the Mt. Windarra mine, for pilot plant and bench development tests. A limited test programme was initiated on the South Windarra drill core composites. Detailed mineralogy has been completed on selected samples from both ore deposits.

In July 1997 Macraes Mining Company Limited deferred a 9 Mtpa expansion of the Macraes Gold Project because of the uncertainty of the future gold price and its impact on equity markets.  Additionally delays in the resource consenting process led to further uncertainty.   It has subsequently announced that a study has been commissioned to recommend a staged approach to development of its New Zealand business. The best economic development path will be determined to maximise returns to shareholders.

This is particularly so for the Mineral Industry and it is important that mineral industry management understands the techniques involved in developing econometric models. Models are usually constructed outside the industry by either government departments or their consultants and used by the policy makers to investigate artificially the implementation and ramifications of new policies. Dust emissions by blasting are of concern to both mine operators and surrounding communities. The quantity of dust produced, and the effects of its dispersal depend substantially on geological, blasting and meteorological conditions. This paper provides details of methods used to quantify the amount of dust produced after collecting samples using high volume dust samplers, and the difficulties encountered in satisfactory dust sampling and quantification. Also described are practical dust reduction methods by using water filled ampoules and water filled balls.

The development of the Ballarat goldfield and of the city of Ballarat are a significant part of the history of the Australian mining industry. Important developments in technology, legislation and labour relations made their first Australian appearance in Ballarat. The growth of the city and its survival after the closure of the mines provide an interesting case study in the benefits flowing from a vigorous mining operation. The failure of the mines can be attributed to rising costs of materials and labour and declining manpower productivity at a time when the price of gold was not free to respond to changing market conditions. The curtailment of exploration programs and increasing labour unrest resulted from this situation, and made the closure of mines inevitable.

Digital computer based control systems are used to implement control and monitoring over most unit operations in Mount Isa Mines Limited lead-zinc concentrator and copper concentrator. Implementation has been gradually devel- oped and expanded since the first process computer installation in 1969. Operations currently using high level control logic include crushing, grinding, on-stream analysis of flotation products, flotation reagent additions, and tailings thickening. Details of gains in metallurgical efficiency for each system are considered.

The practical application of LaneÆs theory on optimum cut-off grade policy has to date proved difficult for selective stoping in large-scale underground mining. The key to determining an optimum cut-off grade is the ability to rapidly perform complex mine layout designs combined with rapid output of multiple potential schedules. This paper describes aspects of the detailed investigation into estimating a practical static cut-off grade for the two main orebodies in Mount Isa MineÆs Enterprise Mine. Rule based automated scheduling software was used to evaluate thirteen different stoping layouts (including design infrastructure and capital development) of the Enterprise MineÆs two main orebodies, with over 200 schedules generated. The investigation illustrates the application of commercially available software to solve the problems of generating multiple cut-off grade stope designs and achieving the otherwise insurmountable task of rapidly generating and valuing multiple scenarios for each stoping layout. Each scenario was evaluated using modelled net cash flows of the mining, concentrating and smelting operations of the company and calculating NPV. The cut-off grade for each orebody was selected based on the cut-off grade that achieved maximum NPV û with an appropriate production rate. Underground mine scheduling is a complex task involving the adherence to a number of simple scheduling rules and the balancing of several competing drivers. The study also found that: while each scheduling rule itself is simple, the compounding complexities of their interaction preclude manual scheduling from being a realistic option. there is a maximum sustainable rate of production possible for any given stoping layout, and that the actual maximum production rate is also a function of the required number of years of sustainable production. the optimal cut-off grade was different for each orebody û a recognition of the impact of the different characteristics of each orebody.

The primary objective of designing, constructing, commissioning and operating a technically and economically viable processing plant cannot be achieved without a rigorous scientific understanding of the chemical principles underlying every facet of the total flowsheet, from feed preparation through to a final product. Having developed a thorough understanding of the chemistry involved, the next challenge is to match the innovative advances with the necessary engineering skills. In simple terms, there is little point in proposing a new processing route if it is not possible or practical to design, construct, commission and operate it. Thus to achieve our objective, it is necessary that processing facilities that are both smarter and cheaper be developed. This presentation highlights a number of the more significant research and development activities that are designed to facilitate the conversion of a smart idea into a real process. Following a brief discussion of several examples, the presentation concludes with the observation that a pro-active team approach is almost mandatory in order to achieve an acceptable outcome.

A cry that is often heard from front-line employees, particularly as a mine grows or circumstances change is "We used to be one big team but now they have set up teams for different functions - we don't know what's going on and we don't share resources any more. We used to just get in and do what had to be done, now we can't.". It usually occurs after management decides that, with the increasing mine complexity, functions and accountabilities of a manageable size need to be identified and defined for individuals and teams to facilitate optimum performance. However, as the statement indicates, these changes have often not delivered all the intended benefits. This paper will explore the reasons why the full benefits have not been realised and will identify actions which can be taken to improve the likelihood of optimal outcomes.

In the recent past a number of smelting plants were commissioned in India to supply the rising demand by domestic steelworks for manganese-based ferroalloys, and they enjoyed cheap electric power and readily available high-grade manganese ore. Presently, the cost of electric power is much higher than in some neighbouring countries, there continues to be poor transport infrastructure and the prices of high-grade manganese ore have increased. Additionally, the Indian Government has opened its economy to the outside world, resulting in the import duties on ferroalloys being drastically reduced. In this paper the current situation in India will be detailed, the electric arc furnace and blast furnace smelting methods for ferroalloys compared and proposals for the construction of a new ferromanganese blast furnace in India outlined. The future of ferroalloy smelters in India will be assessed and actions which could be taken to improve their position discussed.

As mining progressed through the Girilambone oxide orebodies, down to the primary sulphide zones, each successive stratiform layer yielded copper bearing ores of changing mineralogy and grade. Constant changes, innovations and optimisation were required to be applied to the heap leach, solvent extraction and electrowinning operations, to efficiently produce LME Grade A quality copper cathodes from this ore. The changing ore types required various crushing, stacking and heap leach irrigation methods to ensure that optimum recovery from the predominantly low-grade copper ores was efficiently achieved. Subsequently, innovations such as heap aeration and heap rejuvenation techniques were implemented. The constant selective removal of copper from the maturing heap leach liquors, coupled with an increase in iron(III) concentration, required solvent extraction optimisation. Changes to the original solvent extraction circuit configuration, combined with changes in operating parameters and procedures, allowed effective processing with changing heap liquor compositions. The electrowinning tankhouse was also upgraded and optimised through continued testwork and monitoring, to maximise cathode production and quality
