The Central Extended Orebody is located within the Cracow Goldfield approximately 360 km northwest of Brisbane and approximately 220 km west of Bundaberg. It is an epithermal gold deposit hosted by the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian Camboon Andesite. The lode was mined by open cut methods and produced 170 458 tonnes of ore at 5.62 g/t gold.The geology of the rit is relatively simple, comprising two rock types, trachyandesite and rhyolite which have been sub-divided into several units. The trachyandesite is sub-divided into three rock types: brecciated trachyandesite which is the most widespread, hydraulically fractured trachyandesite hosts the mineralisation and the third sub-unit is chloritised hydraulically fractured trachyandesite and has no associated mineralisation. The mineralisation is confined to quartz veins in hydraulically fractured trachyandesite. Several phases of brecciation and subsequent quartz and quartz/adularia vein injection are evident although not all phases are mineralised. Two rhyolite dykes intrude the trachyandesite one is monolithic, the other is sub-divided into hydraulically fractured rhyolite (barren), silicified rhyolite and auto-brecciated rhyolite.

This paper aims to provide the reader with an insight into the field of computer graphics and Virtual Reality (VR), and show how both have been applied to the general area of Free Steered Vehicle (FSV) operations underground. It first explains this developing computer technology and explains its advantages over existing CAD based solutions. This paper deals with the graphical applications and implications of building models within a computer's memory. It then continues to describe the problems with Free Steered Vehicle operations. The work already carried out in the field of VR is explained, and the production of a VR system addressing the problems with fitting cameras to aid the driver's field of view is detailed. Another possible use of VR is also explained - the concept of risk regions, demonstrating its uses in the examination of proposed operational methods. Examples of possible uses are given, and its potential advantages over existing methods discussed. A case study of a computer-generated video involved with the safety of operations of FSVs is also presented. This addresses the precautions that pedestrians should take to ensure safe working in areas where FSVs are operating. This paper then concludes with possible further applications for computer graphics and VR, and the on-going research into these two technologies.

The PACMANUS and Jade deposits are two active hydrothermal fields that are forming massive sulfide deposits at the Pacific rim margin. Both are associated with felsic submarine volcanic rocks and both occur in back-arc settings. However, PACMANUS is associated with almost sediment-free dacites and lies on the crest of a volcanic ridge, whereas Jade occurs in a heavily-sedimented tectonic depression associated with a basement of pumiceous rhyolite. The PACMANUS deposit is richer in Cu and Au, and Jade in Pb. Zinc, Ag, As and Sb contents are similar. Sulfide textures at PACMANUS suggest formation of Cu and Zn sulfides by simultaneous double-diffusion involving inwards-moving seawater mixing with outwards-moving hydrothermal fluid. By contrast, at Jade there is a more complex history of formation where initial growth of barite on the sediment surface, probably associated with microbial activity, formed an impervious cap which trapped higher temperature hydrothermal solutions.

Better quality at lower cost is today's formula for remaining competitive in a world market. For an integrated steel company, high quality low cost steel production must originate before the blast furnace. In 1979, when U.S. Steel initiated a Quality Management Program throughout its steelmaking operations, efforts began at the coal, ore and flux mines. The objective was to improve the quality and reduce the variability of the critical parameters for steelmaking raw materials, to get the blast furnaces, and subsequently the melt shops, under optimum control. The general details of U.S. Steel's Quality Management Program are discussed and how it was used to promote the desired improvements in steelmaking raw materials. Some of the outstanding results obtained by the cooperative efforts between the mines and the steel plants are reported. The lessons learned by U.S. Steel were through upgrading existing operations and facilities. These principles should now be applied to new projects and the benefits of good quality management should commence from the time new projects are Commissioned.

Since the discovery of Pajingo in 1984, the northern Drummond Basin has emerged as a significant new gold province, and has become the focus of intense exploration for epithermal gold mineralisation. Prospects in the Conway area are hosted by felsic to intermediate lavas and volcaniclastic rocks near the base of the Drummond Basin sequence. These Drummond Basin rocks appear to represent favourable hosts to mineralisation because they are cut by structures which could have focussed and channelled fluids on a regional scale, and because they constitute a possible source of gold and, perhaps more significantly, sulphur for the transport of gold. Prospects in the Conway area are up to 15 km2 in area, and are of the adularia-sericite type. They illustrate many of the classic features (siliceous sinters, alteration mineralogy, and fluid characteristics) recognised in epithermal deposits. K-Ar dating of sericite alteration in three of the prospects has produced a range of ages from 283 to 334 Ma, suggesting that the systems are the product of multiple hydrothermal events.

Slag cleaning is an important part of the pyrometallurgical operations at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. It is a complex system with many streams of different phases and composition. Some of these streams are very difficult to control and/or monitor. Through the use of a statistical computer package, called Minitab, key relationships affecting the economical operation of the slag cleaning process have been found. Data for the statistical analysis was collected from all possible variables around the appendage.

A research programme sponsored through the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association investigated two aspects of mine aerodynamics on model scale. These were aero- dynamic losses in (a) shaft/airway intersections and (b) losses created by mine cages moving in a combined haulage/ventilation shaft. The shaft/airway intersections studied included base and intermediate levels for both upcast and downcast. shafts, with one to four rectangular airways intersecting a circular shaft. Changes in intersection geometry were limited to the installation of 45¦ conical brow cutoffs of varying size and the addition of simple flow control devices. The relative air- flows between the airways and the downstream shaft were varied over a range employed in Australian mining practice. In general, experiments revealed that a small brow cutoff was significantly better than none at all, and a simple device such as a cone can reduce losses and improve flow stability at an intersection. The mine cage studies determined the effect on aerodynamic loss of cage area blockage, height/length ratio, openings in cage walls and surface roughness due to external structural members. Broken Hill South Limited's discovery of phosphate deposits in the northwest of Queensland in 1966 prompted intensive exploration which has proved phosphate rock in excess of 2,000 million tons at ten separate deposits.Systematic exploration for phosphate in Australia was initiated by the company in 1964. Early in 1966, an investigation of oil wells in the Georgina Basin in the Northern Territory and Queensland revealed widespread anomalous phosphate in early Middle Cambrian Beetle Creek Formation and Thorntonia Limestone. Phosphorites recognized in oil wells in the southeastern part of the Basin, Queensland, led to the discovery of the Duchess deposits. Exploration of the Beetle Creek Formation since 1966 has disclosed nine other sizeable deposits north of Duchess around the eastern margin of the Basin. The Lady Annie and the adjoining Lady Jane deposits, by reason of their location, 160 miles south of the Gulf of Carpentaria, are expected to be the first to be brought into production.Beneficiation testing and engineering investigations commenced in 1967. Transport between the deposits and various port sites in the Gulf of Carpentaria has been extensively studied and a slurry pipeline as a means of transport to a deep water island port, is now being investigated.

The value of iron ore depends on the grade of the contaminants. Scheduled iron, and the associated contaminants, provides mine planners with a measure of stockpile feed and blending requirements. Blending at the stockpiles is one approach to optimising iron grade, while minimising the variability of contaminant grades. These schedules are typically based on resource models incorporating geology and iron and contaminant grades. Resource models reflect best estimates of trends for each of the elements rather than the potential variability, which is critical for accurate short-term blending. Conditional simulation provides a tool to describe the likely variability of each element. Only recently has conditional simulation technology allowed the inherent correlation between elements to be incorporated into the process. This paper presents the stepwise co-simulation process used to simulate and describe multi-element variability for effective mine planning. A case study using the multi-element conditional simulation and the subsequent uncertainty in the schedule and stockpile planning is presented. This process supports proactive mine planning to minimise unexpected fluctuations in the final product.

Acupan is considered to be an intrusive centre as several igneous phases have been emplaced in the vicinity of the mine over the past 8 Ma. Excessive use of computers in teaching, especially in self-learning programs, may destroy creativity and initiative. It is essential that engineers remain innovative to develop new technology. Safety legislation may have hindered the Development of mine managers. It may be necessary to develop two distinct streams of mining engineers. One should be biased towards human relations and safety, to 'be a certificated mine manager, and the other should be mathematically based as a high-technology mining engineer who would not necessarily qualify for a certificate of competency without a postgraduate course.

This paper presents the methodology for optimising blasting and comminution processes in terms of fragmentation developed by Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific and South America (MMPT). The methodology is called process integration and optimisation (PIO) and involves a number of steps: benchmarking, rock characterisation, measurements, modelling/simulation of blasting and comminution processes and where required, material tracking. The measurements collected while at site are combined with rock characterisation and definition of ore domains to model the complete process chain. These data are used to develop site-specific models of blast fragmentation, crushing, grinding and flotation. This allows customised blast patterns to be developed that optimise both crushing and grinding performance. For each domain, blast designs are recommended to generate the optimal fragmentation size for downstream processes. The objective is to minimise the overall cost for the entire process and the changes often have a positive impact on the mining operation. Process constraints such as wall stability, ore dilution, muck pile characteristics, size of mining equipment, size and installed power of crushing and milling equipment and other process bottlenecks are considered in the blast designs. This methodology has allowed many operations around the world to significantly increase their production: generating typically five to 20 per cent higher concentrator throughput. A number of case studies will be discussed in this paper to describe the structured approach taken and demonstrate the benefits that are achievable. This paper will focus on the role of blasting in the optimisation of the entire mine to mill process chain and discuss elements of the PIO methodology: rock characterisation, fragmentation modelling and measurement, the relationship between fragmentation and mill throughput and material tracking.

This paper forms part of a series of papers relating to the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop and presented to the Fourth Australian Tunnelling Conference in Melbourne, March 1981. The Design of Electrical and Mechanical Services in Museum Station and adjacent Running Tunnels and their relation to Rail.wruy Operation through the Loop are described. The descriptions, while specific to Muscrio Station, are generally representative of those being provided at Parliament and Flagstaff Stations. The Museum Station comprises some 6500 square metres of platform and track area, 5000 square metres of booking hall concourse and entrances and 1200 square metres of offices and plant rooms. The Mechanical and Ilectrical Services for this complex are .imilar in many aspects to those of a large !.gr.hrise city building, but in general the i::;ign is directed more strongly towards :.arety, durability and reliability, and subject to many restraints imposed by L'mitations of space and accessability.

The Earth's Upper Mantle is dominantly peridotitic but in convergent margin regions, such as the S.W. Pacific, subduction of oceanic crust gives greater chemical and petrological diversity to upper mantle petrology and petrogenesis. Examination of currently active, Quaternary and Tertiary volcanism in the S.W. Pacific, particularly seeking information from ocean floor sampling to characterize the basement to island arcs and to investigate active spreading centres, consistently points to parental magmas of basaltic to picritic character. However, these parental magmas are chemically diverse and it is not possible to designate a characteristic 'island arc' or 'convergent margin' petrogenesis in the sense of a characteristic mantle source composition and a charactistic partial melting regime. In this respect, magma genesis at convergent margins contrasts with that at oceanic spreading centres. Our studies emphasize the importance of source peridotite ranging from 'fertile lherzolite' (i.e. compositions with 3-4% CaO, A12O3, 0.3-0.5% Na2O) to refractory harzburgite (

While convergence of plates at a subduction zone produces shortening at the toe of the overriding plate, this deformation is localized to the frontal 100 km or so of the plate. There is increasing evidence that the state of strain in back-arcs, volcanic arcs, and possibly the entire forearc is extensional. The most likely cause of this extension is rollback of the subducting plate and trenchward advance of the overriding plate. Arcs are thermally weakened, and are activated repeatedly through time. The primary expression of the extensional state of strain is spreading of the weak arc material, either by splitting the arc or by back-arc spreading behind it. The investigations conducted in the High Pressure Lab at the University of Missouri-Rolla demonstrated the ability of high pressure waterjets to excavate coal and minerals, disintegrate materials and as well as to comminute coal and minerals. Additional progress in comminution can be achieved if the compressive crushing principle commonly used at present is changed to one where particles are fragmented by the tensile growth of preexisting internal flaws or cracks, under internal waterjet pressure. This idea was studied in a number of tests. It covers tests with different jets imposed on coal and rock samples during compressive load as well as without any loading.

Water resources legislation in Brazil is evolving in a number ways. The nature of water resource ownership has changed in the last constitution (1988) so that now all water remains the property of the state and not the individual. There is also an increasing amount of legislation to control water access from the environment and regulation over water quality for water discharged. Finally, in some regions charging for water has been introduced and this is expected to become more wide-spread over the next few years. Increasing government attention to water legislation creates an increased need for mine sites to improve water management. As a fundamental basis for this, it is necessary to make robust estimates of mine site water balances, which also requires knowledge of the regional water balance to provide context for the mine water use. A conceptual model for mine site and environmental water balance is presented. Issues associated with conventional water monitoring are discussed. It is proposed that introduction of automated monitoring to provide comprehensive and consistent data is attractive. However, there remain a number of cultural and practical impediments to purchase, implementation and maintenance of effective monitoring, which are summarised.

Grade control plays an essential role in the good running of a mine. The factors at play are many, starting from a good analysis of the geology and a correct sampling procedure. Once this is achieved (and it is an essential prerequisite), the problem is to adequately define what is ore and what is waste. This paper tries to show, through a small example, how simple geostatistical techniques (variography, and moving average or kriging), can help in accurately defining these limits in a geologically homogeneous zone, thus allowing optimal use of the available information.

A numerical model describing blast fragmentation and damage in three dimensions has been developed at the Julius Kruuschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and applied to numerous blasting operations in mines throughout Australia. The model combines the rock structure (summarised by block size distribution) with blast strain energy and uses comminution theory to calculate the resultant block size distribution. The model distinguishes between rock breakage and failure, the former being defined as size reduction and the latter as block dissassembly. The background and basis of the model are discussed in detail and three case studies presented describing the application of the model to explosive performance evaluation, explosive selection and drill selection in Australian mining operations.
