Accurate computer prediction of the muck pile produced by a conventional blast requires modeling of the physics that occurs during the rock motion phase of a blast. The ability to predict the motion and the subsequent muck pile can have a significant economic impact on the mining industry. Some of the computer programs previously used to predict rock motion employed polygonal elements with comers and sides to model the rock (Cundall, 1971; Walton, 1982; Taylor, 1983). This approach allows the elements to bulk because of the corners and the aspect ratio. However, tracking the many interactions of the comers and sides of the elements is a computationally intensive process. Several other rock motion computer programs were developed that employed spherical elements, (Schamaun, 1984; Gorham-Bergeron et al, 1987) but they lacked correct bulking mechanisms or could not be vectorized for efficient execution on vector processing machines. A new spherical element code called DMC (Distinct Motion Code) (Taylor and Preece, 1989a, 1989b) has been developed this past year. DMC was designed and written to take advantage of super-computer vector processing capabilities. The efficiency has also been increased through the use of spherical elements, explicit time integration and a new contact search algorithm. When spherical elements were chosen for efficiency, some physically correct mechanisms for capturing the bulking behavior of the rock mass also had to he developed. This paper will treat several mechanisms that were developed to allow spherical elements to exhibit correct hulking behavior.

The Australian Mineral Industries Research Association, set up by the mineral industry in 1959, acts as a research and development broker and manager for the industry. In 1984/85 it contracted out just over $3 million of projects. Its structure and method of operation is described and highlights of some of the successful projects are given. The complex process of developing new proposals is described. This involves the establishment of effective communication networks within the industry and between the industry and research personnel working outside it. The advantages of the industry tackling some of its problems on a jointly sponsored basis are listed. Possible avenues for future development by the Association are given.

Statistical techniques of Box and Jenkins (1976) have been used to assess the existing control schemes and determine the dynamics of flash smelting furnace at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. Pertinent process variables, such as, oxygen flow, flux flow, matte grade and iron to silica ratio in slag, were considered in the analysis using routine operating data collected over two periods of operation. Results indicate inadequate control of some of the important variables. Dynamic characteristic parameters (dead time and response time) between a set of input and output variables were identified to improve optimisation of the existing thermodynamic model used for flash furnace control.

Techniques and results achieved during the excavation of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop (HURL) are summarised and discussed in the context of the various restraints present in a typical urban construction project. Mechanical methods (as distinct from those utilising blasting)accounted for the bulk of the excavation. Ground support was critical in this particular geological excavation setting, but is not discussed in detail except insofar as it constitutes a restraint to excavation progress.

Jointed rock mass is often encountered in rock engineering and its stability has always been a major concern in underground engineering. To analyze the stress characteristics and their variations in jointed rocks, in this study, a new concept of sub-instability stage before rock failure is defined, and a new experimental method is used to investigate interaction between defects and intact rock of the jointed rock mass during the subinstability stage., Firstly, external characteristics of stress and failure mode of the whole jointed rock are investigated systematically by conducting uniaxial compression tests on red sandstone samples with a set of preexisting open flaws of different sizes, and the interactive damage of intact parts and defects in the subinstability stage was further studied. Secondly, rock-like material samples made of bonded plaster blocks were tested and internal data from stress sensor between the strong and weak segments were collected. The transforming processes from independent activity of the individual segment to overall interactive movement of jointed rock before the unstable failure were analysed. The test results indicated that the subinstability stage marked the beginning of interactive failure between the intact rock and defects. In the early subinstability stage, the relatively intact parts bore most of the load in a jointed rock mass, and the defects were damaged firstly which caused high strain around it. The areas of high strain increase rapidly, extending and migrating, causing damage to the intact parts. In the later sub-instability stage, the interaction effect reached its maximum, and a large number of cracks appeared in the intact rock and they propagated and coalesced. Intact parts experienced rapid failure and then the jointed rock failed. The experimental method used in this paper to identify the sub-instability stage could be used to identify failure precursors of jointed rock masses and to develop technology for disaster prevention in rock engineering. Three aspects of rock mechanics, namely, in-situ stress estimation by acoustic emission (AE) method, strength of rock mass and role of chemicals to reduce the strength are covered. It is possible to detect the previously applied maximum stress by stressing a rock specimen to the point where there is a substantial increase in AE activity. This is known as Kaiser effect. From the AE signatures in the second and subsequent loadings, AE take-off point was identified more easily than in the first loading. In determining the compressive strength of rock mass, two factors have to be considered, namely, the size effect on the compressive strength of intact rock and the effect of discontinuities on the compressive strength of rock mass. Although a modified Bieniawski criterion gives best agreement with the triaxial test data, modifications have been suggested to Hoek-Brown criterion due to its popularity. It is possible to reduce the tensile strength of sandstone by saturating it with weak chemical solutions made with dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, polyethylene oxide and aluminium chloride by up to 30%. In the case of compressive strength, there is no appreciable effect. The possible explanation is that the chemical solutions produce an effect on the strength of sandstone only when the failure mechanism is dominated by tensile mode.

The Japanese Government promulgated the æLaw Concerning Special Measures Against DioxinsÆ on 16 July 1999 and it was enforced on 15 January 2000. This is a unique law specialised to protect the environment by the control of dioxin emissions from waste incinerators and several industrial processes. In this law, a few metallurgical processes other than waste incinerators are designated as æspecified facilitiesÆ emitting certain dioxins. Thus, emission standards for dioxins to the air were set for electric arc furnaces (EAF) for steelmaking, iron ore sintering, zinc recovery from EAF dust and aluminum recycle processes. In this paper, the inventory of dioxin emissions for Japan and the recent research and development to reduce emissions from those processes are introduced. Further, some details on the formation mechanism of dioxins and future subjects for effective control of their emissions are discussed.

Boom time in the mining industry has presented mill operators with several unique challenges including the need for increased throughput while being constrained by a shortage of skilled labour and aging capital equipment. New instrumentation technology that provides reduced installation costs; no process down time for installation; and reduced maintenance costs and labour requirements; has been introduced to address the labour situation while maintaining production. This new tech- nology also enabled more accurate and reliable process measurements thus providing the capability for operators to maximise throughput with their existing capital equipment. This passive SONAR based technology can accurately measure the volumetric flow rate of single phase and multiphase fluids as well as the amount of air entrained within slurries. This is accomplished in a non-invasive manner. This paper will describe the principle of operation as well as the application of the technology to critical minerals processing applications. Included will be operational examples comparing the SONAR measurement performance to traditional measurement techniques. These examples will include hydrocylone feed flow, flotation concentrate flow, and slurry streams containing magnetic ores. Actual plant data will be presented as well as a discussion on the operational advantages such a measurement capability.Also described will be the power of the technology platform to provide novel process monitoring and control capabilities such as pipeline sand-out prevention and pipeline acoustic monitoring.

Resin encapsulated rock bolting practices have been adopted by Mount Isa Mines since the early-1980s. Fully encapsulated rock bolt systems meet designated requirements for long-term ground support in the mines. A variety of rock bolts, resins and installation methods have been utilised over this period in underground mining. As a parallel to this evolving application, Mount Isa Mines have tested various resin encapsulated rock bolt systems. Testing has included routine underground pull testing and the development and implementation of the push test for the entire encapsulated bolt length. The latter test enables a greater understanding and representation to be had of the overall mixing, level of encapsulation and capacity of the system. Rock mechanics at Mount Isa Mines undertake evaluation of new bolt systems that become available, in addition to the maintenance of compliance with quality control measures for the existing systems. Improved methods of installation and systems are also investigated to further the cost-effective nature and minimise risks associated with resin rock bolt practices.

The South Ghorveh Batholith (SGB) and the Almoughlagh Batholith (AB) intruded the volcanosedimentary sequence of Songhor Series (Triassic-Jurassic), during the Oligo-Miocene orogenic phase. The granitoids of the AB belong chiefly to the quartz-syenite and syenogranite clans while those constituting the SGB can be generally characterised as quartz monzonite varying towards quartz monzodiorite, and diorite. Granitoids constituting both the batholiths are low in free quartz, and possess characteristics of the æmagnetite seriesÆ, mostly of I-type, metaluminous to marginally peraluminous and calk-alkaline type. Adjacent to them are located the magnetite skarn deposits of Baba Ali and Gelali. In the light of petrography, geochemistry, mineralogy and field geology investigations they could be classified as Fe-skarn and mainly bear characteristics of calcic skarn deposits.

Leichhardt Colliery is developed for underground mining of coal seams at depths exceeding 280 m. Investigations of the area were conducted in phases, each designed to delineate seam characteristics more accurately and to indicate with increasing precision the nature of local geological features and the ranges of those coal properties susceptible to variation. The investigational campaign is described phase by phase summarizing evaluation of the area at the conclusion of each phase. Predictions of geological conditions likely to influence engineering planning are contrasted with actual conditions observed during trial mining.

When Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) purchased its fleet of 18 CaterpillarÆs dump trucks in 1999, as part of its change to owner operated mining, five CaterpillarÆs Computer Aided Earthmoving Systems (CAES) were also commissioned on Komatsu PC8000 hydraulic shovels and Caterpillar D10R bulldozers. Since then the CAES system has been installed and operational on Komatsu PC3000 hydraulic shovel, CaterpillarÆs D10R dozers and Cat 994 front-end loader while Cat 854 wheel dozer has been fitted with CAESbasic. This investment in advanced machine guidance and control technology has proven very beneficial over the years for the Super Pit with improved safety and increased operating efficiency and productivity. The paper brings into focus how the CAES system adaptation in unique mining conditions assists in production gain, equipment operatorÆs safety, flexibility and independence, personnel removal from hazardous areas, acquisition of operational information and improvements in mine planning and design, benefiting the entire mining operation.

The Eastern Distributor Tunnels - the first major road tunnel project in Australia - are the preferred solution to traffic congestion problems, when compared with alternatives, in this inner urban environment. This is because of the reduced impact on residential housing, the improvement of the existing environment, less restrictions on future developments, and a reduction in noise and pollution. Developments leading to a tunnelled solution, traffic needs and reasons for route location are discussed. Criteria for design of tunnel alignments and geometry are described, including the restraints imposed by surface connections on profiles and grades resulting in low rock cover at tunnel portals. The main geotechnical restraints are a major weathered dyke at the shallow large span underground fork and the weathered Ashfield Shale capping the Hawkesbury Sandstone at a portal. Rock cuttability and excavation methods are discussed. Roadheader machines are the most suitable for the varying shallow arched cross sections required and the tunnel lengths involved but the use of blasting in special situations cannot be ruled out. Initial support for the major tunnel lengths will be provided by rock reinforcement in conjunction with shotcrete. Steel ribs are proposed in areas of low cover and weak ground. Final support will comprise an insitu concrete lining. Construction concepts and special tunnelling methods required at the shallow underground forks and tunnels are described.

Outokumpu has developed a new chloride leach process, called HydroCopper«, to treat copper concentrates. Chalcopyrite is quite refractory in leaching and in sulfate milieu an autoclave of high temperature and pressure is required. However, in the HydroCopper«-process copper sulfides can effectively be leached in atmospheric pressure using strong, aggressive chloride solution and copper (II) ions as oxidant. Copper is precipitated from the purified pregnant leach solution as copper (I) oxide, which is filtered and reduced by hydrogen gas to metallic copper powder, which is melted and cast into copper product. Sodium chloride formed in precipitation is decomposed in a chlor-alkali electrolyser, the products of which are circulated back to the process: sodium hydroxide to copper (I) oxide precipitation, chlorine gas to leaching and hydrogen gas to the reduction of copper (I) oxide. During 2003 - 2004 the performance of the HydroCopper«-process was confirmed in a demonstration plant processing one tonne of copper per day. It has been found to be applicable for different kinds of concentrates and can also tolerate a wide range of impurities. A significant advantage of the process is that gold can be leached as a chloro-complex and recovered with active carbon. HydroCopper« can economically recover copper from concentrates and process to a cast copper product. The best utilisation of the process is in most cases achieved when the plant is situated at the mine site. Higher recoveries are attained by the optimisation of the whole operation chain from the mine and the concentrator to the HydroCopper« plant.
