Determination of the adsorbed layer composition and structure at molecular and atomic levels and understanding adsorption mechanisms and dynamics are vitally important for the preparation of surface layers with specific functions. Direct information, at a molecular level, about mineral surface composition, its structure and surface distribution is crucial to perform an efficient separation process for mineral beneficiation. This information is equally important for modifying surface properties of industrial minerals for specific applications such as: fillers, composites, weathering resistance, etc. An understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics of the interaction of first adsorbed organic molecules with mineral surfaces is a fundamental requirement for the prediction and control of the macroscopic surface properties governing the efficiency of separation technologies or new material formulations. The developed infrared external reflection technique has a unique ability to study interface phenomena, at a molecular level, on heterogeneous substrates. The variety, precision and reliability of information about the interface phenomena delivered by this technique is superior to any other single technique. The experiments are fast and non-destructive. High sensitivity (starting from 20 per cent of the monolayer) in situ collected information in a multiphase system, even in the region of strong absorption of the substrate, makes this technique a very valuable experimental tool. The complexity of the recorded reflection spectra, their sensitivity to variations of the optical properties of all bulk and surface components and their spatial distribution in the system under investigation, are in fact the major strengths of this technique. A few examples of the application of this multi-diagnostic technique, for monitoring surface modifications of semi-soluble minerals for selective flotation, will be discussed in detail in this paper.

The Early Proterozoic metamorphic rocks of the Broken Hill (BH) Block have been recently subdivided into sixteen formations and four groups (Willis et al., 1983b, Stevens et al., 1983). This stratigraphic subdivision has relied upon recognition of distinctive mapped rock units and "associations" of mapped rock units, which characterize particular lithostratigraphic units. The rock units and rock unit associations define local ordered sequences which can be compared and correlated, thereby establishing the stratigraphic succession. In the Clevedale homestead, Thackaringa, BH City, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas, coherent stratigraphic successions have been interpreted. These areas illustrate the regional variability of the stratigraphic succession and facies changes within individual stratigraphic units. Stratigraphic type sections are located in the Thackaringa, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas. The principles of stratigraphic interpretation applied in the BH Block can be used in other areas of Willyama Supergroup outcrop such as the Euriowie, Olary and Mount Painter Blocks. The general technique may also have applicability to other highly deformed and metamorphosed terrains.

This paper discusses the considerations for optimum maintenance of critical ore handling infrastructure in order to minimise the cost to the business of maintenance periods. As maintenance periods are a direct interruption to production, time is of the essence and careful management of shutdown periods is essential. The ore pass systems currently in use at Xstrata Copper û Mount Isa Copper Operations are up to 30 years old and have had significant wear over the years. The maintenance of these passes and their brows and chutes in a production situation is a challenge as it can potentially expose personnel to high risk situations in addition to the production interruptions. Some alternatives for mitigating the risk of working in ore passes including plugging and ballooning are described. Criteria are included for selecting a method for the safe entry into a given ore pass. Experience in adapting the method of ore pass plugs and some lessons learnt in the process are also discussed.

The Tarnagulla Gold Project in Central Victoria, Australia, was developed and operated by Reef Mining NL between 1994 and early 2000, producing 53 000 ounces of gold from the Nick OÆTime Shoot, a single narrow vein shoot structure within part of the larger Poverty Reef, with a strike length ranging from 30 m to 60 m. The ore shoot was developed over a vertical interval of 190 m, using a small cross-section decline and small, mechanised equipment. Various stoping methods were employed including mechanised cut-and-fill with a single boom jumbo, hand-held mining using airleg drills and rope scrapers, and small uphole retreat stopes using a line of sight remote operated LHD to recover a crown pillar. Experience during stoping showed that airleg drilling and rope scrapers gave much better dilution control than diesel equipment. Innovations included a low-cost hydraulic fill system. Due to the small scale of the deposit, the feasibility studies, planning and permitting for the mine were based on very limited drilling information; however, the mine was brought into production within two years of the discovery. While the mine made an operating profit, it failed to fully repay capital at the low gold price then prevailing. Applying the lessons learned from the operation to optimise the access and stoping method, the project is re-examined at todayÆs gold price and operating costs. Central Victoria has the potential to host many similar small deposits. The authors were respectively Non-Executive Director and Resident Manager for Reef Mining NL when the mine was operating.

Porphyry copper, gold and molybdenum deposits form in subduction-related settings in association with calc-alkalic or alkalic magmatism. Hydrothermal alteration assemblages are zoned, with potassic cores and propylitic haloes overlain by extensive domains of clay alteration and silicification (lithocaps). Copper sulfides, gold and molybdenite typically occur in veins or hydrothermal breccias, and less significantly as wall rock replacements. Epithermal deposits may form above or to the side of porphyry systems, and may be juxtaposed into the core of a porphyry deposit if rapid uplift and exhumation occur through the life of the magmatic-hydrothermal system. Volcanichydrothermal breccia pipes (ædiatremesÆ) commonly form late in the life of a porphyry system. They may contain clasts of porphyry-style mineralisation, and can host significant epithermal gold resources. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. One of the most difficult places to ventil ate in any mine is the working face area of an advancing mine heading. With an ever changing configuration, continual modification and extension to the ventilation system is necess- ary to maintain an adequate supply of fresh air and to control mixing and recirculation. Methane emissions and high dust levels as coal is broken and removed from the face area can produce unhealthy and dangerous conditions if ventilat- ion is not adequately monitored. An understanding of the air flow patterns which develop through use of different face ven- tilation systems can be reached by undertaking underground measurements or through observations using physical models. Tests undertaken by the author to determine the adequacy of different system-configurations are discussed together with approaches adopted by others working in the United States. Various new methods have been proposed for improving face ventilation beyond that sustained using conventional brattice curtain or tubing systems. The adequacy of some advances adopted by mining companies to improve ventilation while maintaining output efficiency is discussed.

Pisolitic iron ores (also known as channel iron deposits) are an important resource of medium-grade iron ore in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia. They are a special case of transported pisolitic ferricrust, differing from normal transported ferricrust only in the exceptionally high iron and low alumina content. The pisoids typically range up to 5 mm in diameter with abundant particles of ferruginised fossil wood up to 15 mm in maximum diameter preserved in the sediment. Field observations indicate that pisoliths are commonly initiated by the action of raindrops on iron-rich soil. Pisolites form by the impact of raindrops forming coated beads of ferruginous soil, which after dehydration obtain additional coatings during successive showers. Thick deposits of pisolite that are transported and deposited primarily by sheetwash form in the distal regions of the pediment. A size range limited to particles that may be transported by extremely shallow water characterises the abundant fossil wood fragments. The absence of fine sedimentary layering in pisolitic iron ores is explained by the action of soil-forming processes after deposition, while the major coarse bedding features derive from successive erosional and depositional events in the evolution of the pediment. They are not deposited in channels by rivers which, in arid to semi-arid conditions, typically deposit quartz sands and gravels with characteristic point bars and current bedding, abundant ferruginous granules, but rarely pisoids. However, they may fill abandoned river channels.

The twin iron ore islands of Cockatoo and Koolan are located in the spectacular setting of Buccaneer Archipelago off the Kimberley coastline of WA.Cessation of ore shipments from Koolan in 1993 ended 42 years of continuous mining activity which began with the first shipment of ore from Cockatoo in 1951.

High aluminium steel is a promising advanced steel known for its exception properties and holds significant economic and strategic importance. However, the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 based slag with high alumina content reacts vigorously with alumina refractories during the smelting process at high temperature, seriously affecting the safe and efficient production of furnaces and resulting in the formation of Al2O3-MgO non-metallic inclusions within the molten steel. This is a bottleneck problem for high-quality steel refining, and the key reaction path during the corrosion remains unclear. The dissolution reaction mechanism of alumina refractories in high alumina CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 slags under a weak static magnetic field was investigated in this work, using high temperature laser confocal microscopy and in situ radiation spectroscopy techniques. The results indicate that the interaction between the high alumina slags and the alumina refractories is governed by free radical reactions. The dissolution of alumina forms AlO and AlO2 radicals. The reaction rate increases with the C/S ratio of the slag due to its low polymerisation. The reaction between non-bridging oxygen and AlO2 free radicals accelerates the generation of AlO and O2ꞏ- radicals. The reaction layer composed of calcium aluminate is formed through the recombination of AlO, Caꞏ+ and O2ꞏ- radicals. The weak static magnetic field induces the Zeeman splitting of free radical pairs and intersystem crossing occurs, promoting the formation of triplet free radical pairs through the hyper-fine coupling effect. The reaction can be significantly inhibited as the triplet free radical pair does not meet Pauli’s incompatibility principle. This discovery perfects the structure theory of molten slags with radicals and provides supplement to the design of the highly slag-resistant refractories, and provides the theoretical basis for the development of external field protection technologies for high-quality steel refining.

A study on the feasibility of mining the recently discovered Wallaby gold deposit is due for completion by mid-2000. Open pit mining is the favoured method. Determination of the impact of mining bench height on the recovery of ore, including the estimation of dilution and ore loss, is critical to the economics of the operation. Conditional simulation was used to derive a number of gold estimation scenarios within a typical volume of the deposit. These scenarios were interrogated for a selection of mining bench heights and ore block dimensions. The results were reported as a range of grade tonnage relationships and compared to the kriged resource model. This allowed the resource model to be calibrated to a specific mining bench height and ore block size. Once calibrated, more realistic dilution and ore loss values for a number of mining bench heights were calculated from the resource model. These values were then used to determine the economic sensitivity of particular mining methods. The spread of results from the simulations also provided an indication of the confidence in the kriged grade estimates for the different zones of mineralisation within the deposit and highlighted areas of any significant uncertainty.

The B.R.G.M., through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the B.R.G.M. have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment,. some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and -its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consider- ation of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of "mineral-geochemistry", and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

The large, high grade 3000 and 3500 copper orebodies at Mount Isa lie greater than 1200 m below the surface, and partly beneath the silver-lead-zinc mining operations at the Isa Mine.Since discovery over 30 years ago, the primary data acquisition programs have been integrated with long-term copper production strategies. These potentially sizeable and distinctly separate accumulations of copper mineralisation are the only sources capable of supplementing a decline in output from the 1100 orebody in the 1990s. Within a decade these deeper copper orebodies will become the major source of copper ore.

The shock behaviour of a material represents its response to very high strain rate loading at pressures associated with those generated by explosive and blasting loadings. Three sets of shock wave experiments have been conducted to determine shock Hugoniot behaviour, spall tensile strength and shear strength using a plate impact facility. Embedded manganin stress gauges (ie longitudinal and lateral gauges) and high-speed velocimetry using heterodyne techniques were used for the measurements of stresses, shock velocity and free surface velocity. The gabbro exhibited classic linear Hugoniot equations of state in the US-up (ie shock velocity-particle velocity) plane; while for marble a polymer-like non-linear response was observed. The detailed experimental procedures used to make these measurements are to a great extent standard methods when determining mechanical properties and deformation fields at high strain rate.CITATION:Zhang, Q B and Zhao, J, 2015. Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23,000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic. Acceptance of this hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so. Consequently there is little scop- for the discovery of extensions of this field. However, the stratigraphic interval between the source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically higher host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (pyritic carbonaceous, and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

The cylinder test allows us to determine the expansion of a copper cylinder by the detonation of an explosive charge inside. This test, originally designed for military explosives, has been adapted for industrial explosives with non-ideal behaviour. From data obtained with this test and known physical relationships, an analytical procedure has been developed to calculate the Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) equation of state parameters for five ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) and six emulsion-type explosives. A new radial wall expansion function is proposed considering a non-zero initial velocity with the consequent positive Gurney energy at unit relative volume. A set of equations is established to determine the JWL parameters, three of them obtained at the Chapman-Jouguet (CJ) point and the other three at different relative volumes. These equations, along with some constraints to ensure a physically sound solution, are solved for the JWL parameters by a non-linear least squares scheme. A 2D Lagrangian axisymmetric finite elements (FE) numerical model is developed for each tested explosive to validate the analytical results, in terms of expansion histories, with good agreement. The disadvantages of the present zinc producing methods, RLE and ISP, are high energy consumption and environmental problems. Therefore, efforts have been directed in Outokumpu Zinc towards the development of alternate routes. One interesting pyrometallurgical process to produce zinc is to inject zinc calcine together with a solid reductant into molten iron, saturated with carbon. This process has been studied by thermodynamic calculations, laboratory tests and mini-pilot test runs at Outokumpu Research Oy, Pori, Finland. The results of these tests are presented and discussed in this paper. The mini-pilot tests demonstrated that over 97 per cent evaporation of the zinc was possible using a reactive coal dust as the reducing agent. The recovery of zinc in the metal phase was at best 88 per cent of input zinc, but only part reported in molten lead in the splash condenser. The final metallic zinc contained at best 98 per cent Zn, the main impurities being dissolved lead and coal carried along with the flue dusts.

It presents an overview of the basic design philisophy emphas- ising the influence of bulk solid flow propert- ies and bin geometry on the flow patterns developed and how these, in turn, affect the reclaim efficiency and the bin structural in- tegrity and wear characteristics of both bins and chutes. The salient aspects of feeder design and operation will be discussed and the need to consider feeders as integral parts of the bin discharge system will be stressed.

The Bannockburn gold deposit is located 67 km north-west of Leonora in a poorly exposed part of the Norseman-Wiluna belt of Western Australia. The deposit consists of narrow, complexly shaped orebodies which have presented a challenge to find successful grade control and mining methods. The deposit also presents an opportunity to examine in detail the geology of this part of the Norseman-Wiluna belt.This paper discusses the geology and structure of the Bannockburn gold deposit as well as the grade control and mining systems developed to define the ore and extract it with minimum dilution. We discuss the different techniques employed for grade control in the past and their shortcomings, and the evolution of the present system of doing grade control in cross section from blast hole assays.

The Emily Ann nickel mine is owned and operated by LionOre Mining International Ltd. The deposit was discovered during 1997 and is blind, concealed beneath 25 m of transported cover and a further 100 m of unmineralised Archaean felsic rocks. Nickel sulfide mineralisation is hosted predominantly in strongly deformed, altered and metamorphosed Archaean komatiitic ultramafic rocks. Subordinate felsic-hosted, remobilised mineralisation is also present. Mining of ore commenced during late-2001. Since the early days of exploration drilling, through feasibility delineation drilling and subsequent mining, a geological model involving thrusting and folding of a komatiitic-hosted nickel sulfide deposit has been an evolving theme. Development of appropriate mine geology procedures, including detailed mapping, significantly increased the confidence of mine-site geology and engineering staff in the geological model and improved operational efficiencies during start-up. This also allowed the engineering and mining team to develop a tolerance for the large fluctuations in daily production grade, with an understanding that budgeted production targets, on a level-by-level basis, were achievable. This paper describes the development of the current interpretation of the deposit and emphasises the importance of a sound understanding of deposit geology. The direct benefits at Emily Ann included improvements in drill targeting, resource estimation and mine planning.
