The current Queensland Government’s rehabilitation guidelines for post-mining landforms present a hierarchy of preferred outcomes for different areas within the mine site (see Figure 1). Within all areas, restoration of a ‘natural’ ecosystem is clearly prioritised as the preferred end land use, although it is not a mandatory practice. Beyond the official guidelines, there is also an implied preference for renaturalisation echoed in most environmental impact assessments and closure plans (Lamb, Erskine and Fletcher, 2015). In practice, however, ecosystem restoration does not extend to construction of a realistic topographic form, largely rejecting the ‘natural’ aesthetic implied by ecosystem restoration in favour of adopting a functional aesthetic in deference to standard engineering criteria.This presentation argues that the established disconnection between actual and implied landform aesthetics is indicative of a wider problem around end landform planning. It contends that such disconnects are the result of the impact of competing ‘ways of seeing’ (Bradley and Kearney, 2007) the same landscape, and reflect the struggle between, and inclusion of, these differing perspectives within the planning process itself. We propose that recognition of the complexity of landscape perceptions is key to improving post-mining landscape outcomes, and the misalignment between land use values and landscape aesthetics can be addressed by establishing an overarching framework for landscape preferences. As such, we outline the reality of stakeholder landscape preferences, and present a critical response to current planning practices within the life-of-mine (LOM).CITATION:Hine, A and Erskine, P, 2016. Bauxitic laterite of variable thickness and grade is best developed in the Darling Range but covers a large part of the southwest corner of Western Australia. Its limits are defined by the rainfall isohyets to which jarrah forest is confined. Within this broad belt there is an increase in arable land southwards concomitant with a thinning of the laterite layer.Bauxite quality and perhaps thickness as well are dependent on the type of source rock, and are influenced by topography. Economic deposits occur over a vertical range in altitude of about 1200 ft. Some bauxite orebodies appear shoot-like in character, and analogy is suggested with the ore shoots of syngenetic metalliferous deposits.The alumina is in the form of gibbsite enabling low temperature digestion in treatment.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the existence of bauxite in Australia has been known for many years it is only recently that exploitation has commenced of the two most important deposits, strangely at almost diagonally opposite tips of the continent (Fig. 1).Recognition of the importance of the bauxite in the southwest corner came about initially through the efforts of Western Aluminium N.L. which, with some outside financial help, tackled the early exploration with commendable foresight and courage. Evidence for Middle-Late Triassic large-scale, silicic volcanism characteristic of extensional continental terranes is widespread in the Tasman Orogenic Zone in Eastern Australia. Detailed study of an area of south-east Queensland has defined the eroded remnants of a large collapse caldera and an associated area of rhyolite dome building and regional downsag which may be a second caldera (Stephens, 1986). The silicic volcanics and minor basaltic to andesitic products have been assigned to the Aranbanga Volcanic Group (Cranfield, in prep.) and the associated granite complex has been named the Mungore Complex (Ellis, 1968). Published isotopic age dates on the Mungore Complex are 212-219 m.y. (K-Ar Biotite; Ellis, 1968) and 226 m.y. (pooled Rb-Sr on several similar plutons in the region; Webb and McDougall, 1967). Basalts within the area have been dated at 219 m.y. (GSQ Annual Rpt., 1986). The collapse caldera (Mungore Caldera) lies on the intersection of 4 major structural features: 1) the Mt. Perry Lineament, a meridional fault zone extending for over 600 kilometres in a NNW-SSE direction and which has faulted the eastern part of the caldera 5 kilometres sinistrally. The lineament has been active at least from mid-Permian to Late Triassic and has localised activity into the Tertiary. Granite plutons of the same age as'the Mungore Complex- are topographically prominent and largely concentrated east of the Mt. Perry Lineament and its extensions (Nash, 1986); 2) the extension of the Darling River Lineament, a continental-scale, ENE trending feature which correlates with regional structural discontinuities but which lacks expression as faults within the Tasman Orogenic Zone;

After 60 years of operation, coal extraction at Solid Energy New ZealandÆs (SENZ) Strongman Mine, near Rapahoe is scheduled to end in early 2005. Up until 2003 the closure bond for Strongman Mine was only $930, and both SENZ and the West Coast Regional Council (WCRC) agreed that a more realistic level of bonding was required.   A conceptual closure plan has been developed by Golder Associates, and the cost of the work estimated. Closure includes decommissioning of equipment and facilities, rehabilitation and replanting of all disturbed areas and a period of maintenance and monitoring to verify that closure objectives have been met. Significant maintenance allowances are included to cover management of underground fire, subsidence and slope instability. These make up much of the potential ongoing environmental liability at the Strongman. All costs incurred beyond year 1 of closure are discounted to present value. Uncertainty in costs is addressed by Monte Carlo simulation, with an 80 % confidence level adopted.   A bond quantum of $3.0 million has been calculated for the first year of closure at Strongman. A three-year ærollingÆ bond is proposed. Progress will be reviewed annually, with the bond adjusted up or down accordingly. It is then renewed for a further three years. This allows for progressive return of the bond as rehabilitation objectives are met and verified. Similarly, if there are delays in meeting objectives, a proportion of the bond may need to be kept in place for a longer period than assumed. The level of bonding in place for the Strongman operation at any time in the future will therefore reflect the cost to complete the closure work programme.

Preliminary experiments have shown that, when used in a fusedchloride electrolyte, titanium carbide anodes dissolve yielding lower titanium chlorides which nlay be electrolysed in situ to produce a cathode deposit of pure titanium metal. The anode residues are easily withdrawn from the cell. Further experiments have established the operating conditions for maximum efficiency in the process.The process is essentially two-stage, viz.: (1) titanium carbide production, (2) electrolysis producing metal. The internal stratigraphy of the Marillana Creek palaeochannel Tertiary channel iron deposits (CID) in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia was initially defined in the 1980s and redefined as the Marillana Formation in the early 2000s. Recent drilling, open pit mining and field observations in the Western deposits at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Marillana Creek tenements have revealed some additional details on the extent and detail of some units of the Marillana Formation stratigraphy in this area. The drill hole data at Western 1 South has identified a number of features either not previously documented in this area or whose significance has not been adequately recognised, including a denatured zone at the base of the Upper CID of the Barimunya Member, and variations in the lithology within the Munjina Member at the base of the channel. Additionally, the Western 4 pit walls show evidence of a significant near-surface clay horizon and overlying CID, which are suggested to be the equivalent of the Iowa Eastern Member in the Eastern deposits. The deposition of this unit was most likely driven by a regional climatic disruption rather than a change in sediment source area alone. The nature of the Weeli Wolli Formation-derived goethitic peloids in the Western deposits may explain the more extensive denaturing in the Western Lower CID of the Barimunya Member. In contrast, the more robust nature of the haematitic-cored pelletoids in the Central and Eastern deposits has resulted in a less denatured Lower CID in these areas. Such work reveals the value of and need for geologistsÆ ongoing face mapping observations and detailed drill hole logging, and cautions against not querying previously accepted interpretations.

The long continuing controversy over the Origin of fusain, whether it is a product of primeval forest fires, or of special conditions of weathering (including bacterial decay) of the vegetal debris concerned prior to, burial, has now been extended, to include the possibility that fusain is a product of the coalifaction process subsequent to deposition, so that doubt may reach even to its time of formation.The conflicting views on this point are summarised in the following quotations from two recent publications (my italics in each quotation):1. "Recent observations made in peat and brown coal deposits in Australia, England and Germany strongly suggest that practically all fusain is formed by coalifaction after deposition and 'preliminary compression. In deposits of advanced brown coal rank, it normally takes the shape of pieces of wood compressed parallel to the bedding plane; and some fragments consisting partly of fusain and partly of vitrain exhibit the same amount of compression throughout. This would seem to indicate fusinisation after burial, as hard brittle charcoal would be crushed, or else retain its original irregular shape if strong enough to withstand pressure.In some immature deposits, however, where cover is of a hydrostatic nature rather than a vertical compressionar force, occasional pieces of fusinised wood showing very little flattening are present, but such immature deposits seldom contain the proportion of fusain found in higher rank coals. In view of this, and the possibility of introduction of charcoal into peat deposits, it is felt that a small amount of the fusain in coal may represent wood charred before burial, but most of it almost certaInly originated as a product of fusinisation after burial" (Dulhunty, 1948, p.14).

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) in wastewater treatment as a separation process of submillimetre biological flocs is based on the generation of bubble/floc aggregates. DAF is a complex process but has got advantages, such as allowing a high hydraulic load, compared to sedimentation. A thorough knowledge of the physics of the DAF process is, however, still lacking. This paper will present results of experimental studies on three aspects of significance to the separation process û the flow structure in the flotation tank, rise velocities of aggregates, influence of floc size on the separation efficiency. Flow structure. Measurements were performed in a pilot plant mapping and visualising the velocity field. The dispersion water (bubbles) had a decisive influence on the flow structure due to the effect of the bubbles on the bulk water density. Stratified conditions with a less dense, bubble-containing upper layer and a clear water, denser bottom layer were important for a good separation. A simple model of the stratified flow structure was elaborated making it possible to interpret the function of the aggregate rise velocities. Bubble/floc aggregates. The dynamics of single flocs, bubbles, aggregates were visualised using a borescope + CCD video camera + digital recorder + image analysis. Sequences of video frames made it possible to determine the rise velocities of the single aggregates. These velocities were found to be in the range 1 - 9 mm/s with a tendency for large flocs to have higher rise velocities. Separation versus floc size. The floc size distribution was measured in the DAF process. Data from three different DAF cases showed, that large flocs (> about 100 ¦m) were entirely separated, whereas small flocs experienced a less good separation. It was, moreover, found, that a very significant separation of flocs took place in the very upstream end of the separation zone in a pilot plant case.

The Izok massive sulphide deposits are located in the Northwest Territories of the remote western Canadian Arctic. Together they represent one of the highest grade undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. Metall Mining Corporation is presently engaged in a feasibility study on developing the Izok property as well as actively exploring for additional reserves. The Izok deposits are Archean-aged, volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) bodies hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks. The hangingwall package includes additional felsic volcanoclastics, dacitic and basaltic flows, thin sulphide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sediments. The felsic volcanics are intruded by syn- to late-hydrothermal dacitic dykes and sills and post-hydrothermal gabbroic dykes and sills. Both intrusives are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to overlying flows. All lithologies are cut by much later irregular granitic pegmatite dykes and regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene homfels grade. The deposits occur within a large kilometre-scale soda-depleted alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hangingwall rocks to the deposits are characterised by zones of muscovite-biotite (with or without sillimanite), lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite (with or without anthophyllite), and locally intense silicificified and albitised zones. All lithologies have been affected by a later calcic metasomatic alteration. As currently defined, the Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag deposits comprise a cluster of four complexly-zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central, and newly discovered Inukshuk deposits. The first three deposits are amenable to open pit mining while development of the Inukshuk deposit will require underground methods. The combined mineral inventory of the Northwest, North, Central and Inukshuk deposits at present totals 15.6 million tonnes with a grade of 2.4 per cent Cu, 13.8 per cent Zn, 1.4 per cent Pb, and 74.6 g/t Ag.

The results expected from a longwall face can best be estimated from the ideal production rate, determined by the capacity of the equipment and the conditions in which it is installed, the effective operating hours, and the utilisation.The effective operating hours are determined by a number of scheduling factors which include the proportion of manned time to calendar time, the effective shift factor (effective time to manned time) and the move times.Analysis of the results achieved on the last 121 completed longwall panels in Australia (1984 onwards) shows a significant trend between 'actual tonnes/manned hour' and 'ideal production rate' (the measure of the capacity of the installation).Using 1982 'state of the art' longwall equipment, (the average in use in the seven year period), it should be possible to produce around 2.7M tonne/year ROM from a mine with one longwall. Few mines are achieving this.A review of production scheduling factors and general natural hazards affecting some mines suggests three things.1. Whilst some increase in average effective hours has followed the CIT decision, further improvement is possible at many installations.2. Many mines subject to general natural hazards, such as high gas make and high general stress, have found effective solutions and achieve the same utilisation as the overall average.3. A small number of faces within such mines have been severely affected, some less so. The most severe effects of natural hazards appear to be very site specific. This emphasises the need for detailed investigation of the causes, and development of means of predicting their presence. Only then can either satisfactory technical solutions be found to overcome the problems or prior decisions be chosen not to mine badly affected panels.

The island chains of the Western Pacific (Fig. 1), on account of their related origin, and the similarity of the rocks that compose them, constitute in the main a most homogeneous mineral province. They lie in a complex "mobile" zone of the earth's crust, that formed a geosynclinal area separating the continental margins of Australia and South-Eastern Asia (the so-called Sundaland) from each other, and from the margin of the Pacific Ocean proper (FIg. 2). The whole region was drowned at the close of the Ice Age, as a result of the rise of sea-level that accompanied the melting of the great ice caps in the polar regions, leaving only the higher portions as islands and peninsulas, many of them separated only by shallow seas or "shelves."The geosyncline was infilled with Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments that have undergone varying intensities of folding and metamorphism, and has been subject to intermittent periods of volcanic activity, continuing into the present. Midway between the two continental margins there is a narrow belt of pronounced negative gravity anomalies, with an extraordinary S-shaped convolution in the vicinity of the Banda Sea and Celebes, that marks the core of this unstable region. The folding within the "mobile" zonetrends parallel to it, so that the islands in its vicinity, which are regions elevated by folding, are all elongated in the strike direction of the folds. This explains not only the linear shape of Sumatra and Java, but the arc of islands enclosing the Banda Sea, and the peculiar shape of Celebes.Parallel to the belt of negative anomalies, at a close remove from it, is the line of Recent, or active volcanoes, that extends along the whole length of Sumatra and Java...

Recycled cement paste (RCP) is a kind of CaO-rich recourse, which is separated and recycled from waste concrete. Due to its chemical composition, RCP could partially replace lime as a flux and be loaded into electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking process. Rapid RCP assimilation and liquid slag formation have significant effects on EAF steelmaking process. In this study, the dissolution behaviours of RCP and lime at temperatures of 1400°C to 1500°C were investigated using static dissolution experiment. The dissolution rate, interfacial microstructure, as well as dissolution mechanisms were discussed. It was found that the dissolution rate of RCP was much higher than that of lime. RCP could be completely dissolved into slag in 60 secs at 1500°C. The dissolution rate of lime was in range of 3.910-4 g/(cm2ꞏs) to 2.610-3 g/(cm2ꞏs), while that for RCP was in range of 1.510-3 g/(cm2ꞏs) to 4.910-3 g/(cm2ꞏs). As for lime dissolution, a dense layer of dicalcium silicate (C2S) generated at the dissolution interface, and the diffusion of Ca2+ in C2S layer was the limited step for lime dissolution. Some of calcium ferrite could be observed at the interface between lime and C2S layer. As for the RCP dissolution, there is no obvious product layer of C2S formed at the dissolution interface, Fe2+ continuously diffused into RCP layer during the dissolution, and small amount of FeOꞏMgO solid solution generated and gathered at the dissolution interface. The dissolution rate of RCP in EAF slag was quite higher than that of lime, partially add RCP as flux in EAF could accelerate the slag formation process.

An investigation was made into the mineralogical characteristics of the upper portions of the 650 and 750 copper lodes. The investigation was based on a comprehensive suite of geological specimens representing all types of mineralization encountered during mining until the end of 1954 and the chief aims of the investigation were to determine (a) the minerals present and their textures and associations, (b) the paragenetic sequence of deposition of minerals in the orebodies, (c) significant changes, if any, which could be found in the orebodies with depth, and (d) the nature and mode of occurrence of nickel in the ore. The general structure of the orebodies is outlined and their mineral composition given. 10 textures exhibited by the ore minerals are described and a paragenetic sequence of events in the formation of the copper orebodies is outlined. No decrease in the complexity of the sulphide mineral textures with depth could be seen and no evidence was found to suggest that the tenor of the ore would decrease with depth although some factors which may eventually limit the extent of the orebodies are noted. The mode of occurrence of minor elements in the orebodies is described. Notes on the occurrence of pyrite, aikinite and berthierite in the orebodies is given and the orebodies are considered to be identified with LiIidgren's mesothermal type of sulphide ore deposit in which considerable replacement of older by younger generations of sulphide minerals occurred.INTRODUCTIONA mineragraphic study was made by Stillwell and Edwards (1945) of a suite of specimens submitted by Mount Isa Mines Limited from the Mount Isa Black Star copper orebodies with a view to determining 1. the nature, extent and association of arsenic, antimonyand bismuth minerals, 2. the mode of occurrence of silver and 3. whether galena and sphalerite occurred in minute forms and below the sizes readily observed in hand specimens.

The Broken River Province, in the northern part of the Tasman Orogen, is divided into the Camel Creek and Graveyard Creek Subprovinces. In the Late Cambrian to Early Ordovician, and again in the Late Ordovician, the northern part of the Tasman Orogen was probably a convergent margin with calc-alkaline volcanism. These episodes may have been separated by a passive phase in which quartz-rich flysch and tholeiitic volcanic rocks were deposited. Subsequently, in the Silurian, the region underwent extension forming a large turbidite basin which included the Camel Creek Subprovince and the Hodgkinson Province to the north. Melange is pervasive in the Camel Creek Subprovince which was folded twice in the Devonian. The melange may be related to thrusting accompanying D1. No rocks younger than Early Devonian have been recognised whereas, in the Hodgkinson Province, deposition continued until the latest Devonian. The Graveyard Creek Subprovince formed adjacent to the Camel Creek Subprovince, probably as a pull-apart basin on stable crust. The deformation history of the Graveyard Creek Subprovince contrasts markedly with that of both the Hodgkinson Province and Camel Creek Subprovince. In the Graveyard Creek Subprovince, melange is only present in Early Ordovician rocks. No major angular unconformities have been recognised in the overlying marine to non-marine sequence, which ranges from Early Silurian to Early Carboniferous. Several hiatuses and a slight angular unconformity, all within the Devonian, may be related to the major events in the Camel Creek Subprovince. A major deformation in the Graveyard Creek Subprovince in the Early Carboniferous had only slight effects in the Camel Creek Subprovince. Movement on the Clarke River Fault was probably an important influence on sedimentation and deformation in the Broken River Province.

The Collinsville Coal Measures consist mainly of arenaceous sediments but indude eleven named coal seams. The Formation outcrops around the northern end of tbe Bowen Basin where it attains a thickness of 700 ft. in the Collinsville-Scottville area and overlies Lower Bowen Volcanies with angular unconformity. Most of the members in the Formation thicken basinwards. The regional dip is about 8 degrees. The Formation thins southwards and does not occur south of the Bowen River on the eastern flank. On the western flank it is represented by 60 ft. of barren sandstone at the limit of our mapping, 12 miles south of the Bowen River. Two seams are mined, the Bowen and the Blake; coal from the former produces high grade metallurgical coke, and the latter seam is mined for steaming coal. Where mined, the seams are about 20 ft. thick. The coals are of medium volatile bituminous rank and the lower coals are of higher rank than those above them.Reverse faults striking across the Coal Measures have been delineated and the existence of areas of intrusive rocks has been established. Intrusions rose up fault planes and, as felspar porphyry sills, selectively intruded coal seams, decimating reserves of coalavailable for mining. One sill, in the Blake Seam, attains a known thickness of 115 ft. Because the distribution and thickness of the sills is rarely predictable, density of drilling has been greater than in most coalfields.INTRODUCTIONThe assemblage of sediments occupying the northern portion of the Bowen Basin (Fig. 1) may be divided into four formations of Permian age:The Upper Coal Measures (U. Bowen)The Middle Bowen Marine Beds (M. Bowen)The Collinsville Coal Measures (M. Bowen)The Lower Bowen Volcanics (L. Bowen).Of these, the Upper Coal Measures and the Collinsville Coal Measures are known to contain coal seams of workable thickness.

Neutralisation, normally using lime, is the most widely used method for treating high flows of acid mine drainage (AMD). Lime costs can be very high however. If carbonate sources could be used to achieve pH values above six, costs could be greatly reduced. For example, use of locally quarried limestone at Mt Lyell could potentially reduce alkali costs from about $A 3.5 to $A 1 million/year. Methods for enhancing the effectiveness of limestone and magnesite for neutralising Mt Lyell and Savage River AMD respectively have been examined through a series of investigations. Small-scale testwork found that the maximum pH economically achievable with ground limestone was about five, due to slow dissolution rates and surface armouring. The problems of surface armouring were greatly reduced by the use of crushed limestone or magnesite at high pulp densities (75 per cent solids w/w), enabling pH values >6 to be achieved in a practical time frame. The use of particle sizes in the range 6 mm and finer also reduces costs by avoiding the need for grinding, and reduces the problems of solid-liquid separation and solid recycling that arise if large additions of ground carbonate are used. Pilot scale tests were carried out using tumbling drum reactors with limestone and Mt Lyell AMD and a pulsed-bed static reactor with magnesite and Savage River AMD. pH values averaging 6.2 and 6.4 were achieved with Mt Lyell and Savage River AMD respectively. Approximately 80 per cent of feed acidity was neutralised. A preliminary engineering design and cost estimate has been completed on the pulsed-bed reactor and shows that the concept is technically feasible and, if results are confirmed, economically attractive. Further pilot testing is planned.

A broad zone of intra-plate volcanism occurs for some 3000 km along the E. Australian coastal regions, extending from far northern Queensland southwards to Tasmania, westwards to western Victoria, and into southeastern South Australia. The age range, taken over the whole region, extends from Eocene to Holocene. Wellman & McDougall (1974) recognised the occurrence of three distinct types of volcanic occurrences: (a) Lava field provinces, dominantly basaltic and commonly strongly undersaturated, but of variable size. Large lava fields are especially exemplified by the younger provinces in northern Queensland (e.g. Nulla, McBride), and western Victoria. (b) Central volcano provinces, in which a reasonably well defined volcanic edifice is discernable. Such provinces are built of mildly undersaturated to saturated mafic lavas, but are also characterised by felsic volcanism (and often substantial mafic and felsic intrusive phases). Examples are the Springsure-Minerva Hills province, the Tweed and Focal Peak Shields (southeastern Queensland to northeastern N.S.W.), and the Nandewars, Warrumbungles, and Canobolas volcanic centres (N.S.W.). (c) A single leucitite province in N.S.W. Wellman and McDougall (1974) were able to show that the central volcano provinces exhibit a remarkably regular southward age migration pattern, the calculated migration rate being 66 + 5 mm yr , and these authors interpreted this in terms of the northward passage of the Australian plate across a fixed 'hotspot' within the upper mantle. The leucitite province also fits this migration pattern. The lava field provinces apparently exhibit more erratic regional age distribution patterns, but Sutherland (1981) has interpreted the data in terms of a multiple 'hotspot' model. The process of desilverising by fractional crystallisation with reflux was investigated through laboratory batch tests and continuous laboratory bench scale tests at CSIRO Clayton, to a 300 kg/hr pilot plant at Port Pine. The pilot plant built at BHAS comprised a vertical cylindrical refining column with internal diameter 250 mm and height 3.2 m, attached at the top to an off-set cylindrical stirred crystalliser tank. Crystals were made in the crystalliser by intermittent immersion of steel cold fingers, which were water cooled between immersions. Gas heat was used for melting the crystals at the base of the column and for side compensation heating. A computerised in strumentation system was employed for data logging and for controlling some critical plant operations. A mechanical device was first employed to promote counter-current plug flow of crystals down the column against the rising stream of reflux liquid, but this was found to be unsatisfactory owing to excess noise, frequent mechanical failure, and excessive accumulation of dross. Plug flow was finally promoted by pulsing the column. Low silver levels, less than 1 gitonne, were achieved with both methods of crystal transport under total reflux conditions. The pulsed column gave results for silver and bismuth which agreed with the theoretical predictions of a computer model, but there was some selective drossing of antimony. In the mechanically agitated column, excessive drossing promoted selective removal of most of the antimony and some of the bismuth, and the results after extended operation were well removed from the theoretical predictions. Plant failures and operating problems prevented the achievement of satisfactory product quality with the necessary reliability under production conditions. Other priorities necessitated the termination of the project before the process could be optimised.
