Current mineral extraction and valorisation activities still have a strong focus on the ‘delivered product(s)’ which might be a bulk commodity such as metallurgical coal, hematite, bauxite, etc., and mineral concentrates such as metal sulphides, oxides, and carbonates; precious metals, such as gold, silver and PGMs, REEs or battery metals; halogen salt forming elements; or industrial minerals, which are non-metals including crushed rock, sand, and gravel etc. With the current focus on tailings disposal the pushback has been to seek alternatives to the currently ‘conventional’ disposal method via increasingly higher risk tailings settling facilities (TSFs) with a changing focus towards ‘dry disposal’. Whichever option is selected, the alarming trend is the increasing cost and ESG impacts. An emerging approach is to pose a focusing question ‘Is there anything else passing into the tailings stream and/or disposable waste streams which could be recovered and pass into the product revenue stream? All of the above ‘primary’ process streams offer opportunities for increasing recovery and offsetting some of the disposal costs. Some secondary opportunities are already being pursued, such as REEs and battery metals from base metals deposits, but other opportunities are still being overlooked, such as building materials and soil conditioning pellets. These potential ‘new’ product streams can also utilise other mining and domestic wastes such as smelting slags, glass waste, plastic waste etc. This paper will address these opportunities and provide examples including process approach, economics and some of the current barriers that exist, which are holding back progress on such initiatives.

Air blasts or wind blasts as they are termed in underground coal mining, occur in a number of types of underground mining where a void develops and the overlying or adjacent rock fails rapidly to allow the development of a high pressure air pulse. The effects of air blast vary widely from very low consequence to high consequence events causing multiple fatalities as occurred at North Parkes mine. The aim of this paper is to examine the phenomena of air blasts and the underlying parameters which determine the severity of the air blast event. A basic model under development is then detailed. The aim of the model is to determine the magnitude of the pressure pulse(s) developed during an air blast event. This, combined with a transient ventilation network analysis model will enable the airflows and associated pressure drops to be determined and allow the pressure pulse around the mine to be evaluated. The overall aim is to allow mining engineers and mine ventilation engineers to undertake a risk assessment of air blasts at individual mine sites, allowing working parameters to be changed to eliminate or reduce air blasts, or engineering controls to be developed to reduce the effects of air blasts.CITATION:Tuck, M A, 2013. The traditional direct-heated drying process has been replaced by the steam drying process in non-ferrous metal smelters, where steam is available from waste heat boilers. Many recent projects have selected Kumera Steam Dryers in equipping a new production line or modifying an old production line. The industrial performance of the steam dryers has shown significant energy saving and emission reduction. The steam dryers have been operated at high availability and long maintenance interval. As the process principle of Kumera Steam Dryer is different from other equipment, the set-up for steam dryer plants is configured to fit the smelter site and operation conditions to achieve optimal performance. This article discusses the equipment involved in the steam drying process and their combination options.

Mechanical sampling provides a definitive value for the product sampled but the results are not instantaneous, meaning that decisions on process control can only be made hours after the sample is taken. Chemicals are added, tailings are sent to waste, stockyards are laid and the data for the decision-making is historical. Online analysers provide instantaneous information, allowing operators to make immediate and cost-saving decisions on the process. However, pending the specific online analysis application, there is a need for reference sampling for dynamic calibration/bias updating of the analysers so that they can deliver the desired precision and accuracy. What would be the economic justification for combining mechanical sampling with online analysis to reduce laboratory costs and provide immediate process control with certainty of accuracy? Heap leach pads are composed of mined ore, usually crushed, disposed on liners to be processed with leach solutions, and the tail of the process is called “spent ore” which are then transported by conveyor belts to be disposed into dumps. It is often to observe stability problems in these dumps, that could affect the equipment working on it and the continuity of the whole mine process. These problems are related to an excess of water content at the spent ore, therefore the operational efforts are focused onto control this geotechnical parameter.This work presents the results of different geotechnical laboratory testing, using samples of spent ore of a mining operation in the north of Chile. In the last 10 years, 3 campaigns have been made to get samples. Valuable information was obtained to identify how specific operational/metallurgical factors could affect the geotechnical behaviour of the spent ore. Special attention is given to the decision to change the metallurgical process adding salt to the heap leach process and its impact to its hydraulic conductivity.Historically, the process has been based on the leaching of oxides and sulphides materials, in separate campaigns, in which it is possible to observe different geotechnical response in the spent ore generated. Recently, it was implemented a new process in which the materials are blended and salt is added, to improve metallurgical performance in terms of recovery. This change generate impacts in the dump, since the geotechnical parameters are affected; decreasing hydraulic conductivity in about one order of magnitude (explained by the salt added).Changes are shown in the geotechnical parameters of the spent ore, considering that the mining source is the same, and how the operational process and dump design are affected.CITATION:Rimmelin, R and Vergara, C, 2018. Open pit/underground mining and mineral processing can generate large amounts of waste that contains sulfide-type minerals such as pyrite (FeS2), and it can produce acid mine drainage (AMD) when exposed to oxygen and water. This highly acidic wastewater contains heavy metals and this is one of the most serious environmental issues after mining operations taking several decades to completely remediate with high costs. For green mining, the present study focused on the development of a recovery technique for gold from an eco-friendly solvent, thiosulfate, by utilising mine wastes, tailings. First, gold recovery experiments in ammonium thiosulfate system were carried out using model samples representatively present in tailings (ie SiO2, Al2O3, FeS2, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4). The results showed that gold recoveries were negligible when using Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4 while pyrite shows a recovery efficiency three-fold as high as the maximum recovery efficiency when using others. Subsequently, the study also addressed the identification of the recovery mechanisms and post-recover process. The results indicate that tailings can be sufficiently utilised for gold recovery in the hydrometallurgy process and a further sustainable process can be established.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Mineral exploration and mining are challenging businesses. Remote and at times harsh conditions have always made it difficult for exploration, but modern explorers also have to deal with cover, numerous technologies, an explosion of data and critical early community engagement. Mining deals with the reality of moving and breaking thousands of tonnes of rock each day to extract what can be a very minor component of economic value, and, furthermore, society expects that this will be done in a clean and sustainable manner. The exploration and mining challenges appear disparate, but they are intimately related.Although not widely appreciated, both exploration and mining have a long tradition of innovation. Over the last 50 years, major step changes in exploration have resulted from radical advances in our understanding of ore forming processes, new geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing technologies, and new ways to integrate and interrogate data. Over a more extended period, close to 100 years, mining has developed bulk surface and underground methods, selective extraction through flotation and leaching and global positioning system–geographic information system control systems that collectively facilitate mining at a massive scale. And yet, in spite of these successes and the boom that we have enjoyed in the last ten years, the industry is under pressure and the need for innovation and change is paramount.The major drivers for innovation are the need for increased quality in discoveries and mines and the need to interact effectively with communities and jurisdictions such that the benefits of quality mines are recognised and enjoyed widely.We are still making new discoveries around the Pacific Rim and elsewhere, but many argue that the quality – grade and accessibility – of these discoveries is decreasing. The net result is that explorers are delivering resources and reserves for development at lower grades and with higher capital and operating costs than current operations. For mining, the increasing age of many existing operations contributes to increasing costs, which, when combined with decreasing cut-offs and lower grades, also results in declining quality. The combined picture does not look good.Just as the pressure to improve performance and margins in the face of declining inputs increases, we are simultaneously faced with increasing societal demands for improved environmental performance and sustainable practices. This is most apparent at the local, community level, where opposition ultimately leads to delays or even cancellation of new projects. In the early-1990s, Tad Golosinski, the former the head of mining department at WASM participated in a review mining engineering courses in Australia. The review team asked various industry executives what subjects they thought graduates needed to be taught. Tad made the comment to me that the more senior executives thought that history and ethics were very important. The outcome was that the mining engineering courses were required to contain at least five per cent content dealing in ethics. The course was to be modified to reflect this. Tad thought at the time the students would think that subjects dealing in history and ethics came from retirees and professionals that were over the hill. So let me talk to you today about ethics.

Two years ago I was sitting in a big lecture theatre at the School of Mines in Kalgoorlie at the annual New LeadersÆ Conference listening to a guy tell us all how much he loved his job, travelling the country ælegallyÆ blowing stuff up à and getting paid to do it. I would have paid to see and do the things he spoke of à now IÆm that guy. From finishing a mining engineering degree at the University of Ballarat, through the job hunt, to firing environmental blasts in Tassie and designing and implementing construction blasts in the middle of the Gold Coast. My name is Rohan Stevens and IÆm a blast-o-holic. While the æjob huntÆ we all embark on toward the end of our degrees is a stressful time, itÆs also very exciting in the current climate. There are a number of things I have learnt through both my hunt for the job that best suited me and working for the worldÆs largest explosives manufacturer. If at least you donÆt benefit from my learnings IÆm certain you will enjoy hearing about (and viewing) some of the work I have had the opportunity to be involved with over the last 18 months with Orica Mining Services.

The last decade has seen a resurgence of interest in lunar exploration and the emergence of countries like China and India as space fairing nations. In 2004, the US announced a new Vision for Space Exploration, whose objectives focused on human missions to the Moon and then Mars. The near future is likely to see the emergence of a worldwide drive to revisit the Moon as the first step in investigating the Solar System. To date, the Apollo missions provide our only experience of human operations on the Moon or anywhere else beyond Low Earth Orbit. Much was learned from these missions. However, their short duration means that many of the environmental effects that will be important for longer-duration missions could not be quantified. In addition, long-duration missions and infrastructure on the Moon require new technologies and capabilities, which must operate successfully and reliably in this lunar environment. Developing these technologies poses significant challenges for the exploration program. The paper discusses the risks associated with the construction of lunar surface and underground structures and the challenges to adopting the standards and rock mass classification systems developed on Earth and their applicability to the Moon. Moreover, an exchange of views to explore near-surface geologic and geotechnical profiles of the Moon is emphasized and implications of the lack of knowledge on rock mass characterisation of the Moonrock mass, the lack of theoretical/empirical experience on the use of rock mass systems outside Earth, and uncertainties.

The mining industry seeks to engage with and respond to stakeholders through open consultation processes during the various phases of a mining project (Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, 2006). Two Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded projects conducted in the Bowen Basin coalfields in Central Queensland investigated the use of a stakeholder panel for the evaluation of mine site rehabilitation. The panel members were drawn from the local and regional area, and represented neighbouring landholders, traditional owners, AgForce, local government, conservation groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Greening Australia and the Fitzroy Basin Association. The approach of utilising stakeholders to establish rehabilitation criteria was proposed as an alternative to the established practice of assessing rehabilitated areas against a suite of quantitative completion criteria; eg >70 per cent vegetative ground cover or <5 t/ha/a soil loss. The basis of this approach recognises the reality that the definition of completion criteria has proved problematic over the last 40 years with no broad consensus reached on the suite, let alone the metrics; eg the exact cover level that will benchmark acceptance of the mine site rehabilitation.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2016. Australia as a leading producer of mineral sands has also occupied a leading position in many areas of research'in the processing and applications of these minerals. Research in upgrading ilmenite to produce synthetic rutile has resulted in the develop- ment of many processes, e.g,., Becher, Murso, Chlorine Technology, and ICI processes. Studies on the reducibility of ilmenites, aqueous leaching of reduced ilmenites, Fe-Ti-O system, leachability of natural and treated ilmenites in hydrochloric acid and selective chlorination of iron from ilmenites have been carried out in order to develop and improve the efficiency of the above processes. While research on the processing of zircon sand to produce high purity (99.99% ZrO2 zirconia powder and zirconium chemicals started only recently, research by CSIRO in the early 1970s led to the discovery of the phenomenon of transformation toughening in partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) ceramics. Australia, with very significant resources of lanthanide-containing ores, pro- duces substantial quantities of monazite each year but research in processing and appli- cations of rare earths was neglected in recent years in this country. However, research to improve processes for the recovery of rare earths is now under way and studies on the production and testing of Nd-B-Fe magnets which are 1.5-2 times stronger than the strongest magnets (Sm-Co) currently available, have also commenced.' An overview of the research in the pro- cessing and applications of mineral sands during the last two decades in Australia and its implications for the industry are pre- sented in the paper.

Thank you for the opportunity to speak at this important conference attended by aspiring mining professionals, some of whom will become the leaders of the mineral resources industry that forms the solid foundation of AustraliaÆs past and that will fuel the exciting growth of AustraliaÆs future.I want to briefly touch on the history of our business, then look at the opportunities that exist in the contract mining industry and finally comment on what the educators need to consider in their curriculum to meet the needs of our business. Byrnecut started out as an idea in early-1987 developed by a group of four mining people. At the time the industry was on the high end of a mining boom, the era of the Bonds, Connels, Skases and so on. Riding on this wave of euphoria we borrowed $600 000 from the National Australia Bank and, without having enough knowledge to lose sleep over the potential risks, started business in mid-1987. The euphoria quickly evaporated with the 1987 October stock market crash. The bank pulled our overdraft, equipment finance rates increased to over 20 per cent per annum and my house was mortgagedseveral times over. The business learning curve was extreme for a young mining engineer who had developed his trade in the relatively sheltered environment of a large public mining house, namely WMC. We were somewhat bitter that the banks had done a runner. We were a private company, backing the business with personal assets with our shoulders to the wheel, whilst the Bonds of the world had theirnoses in the trough ripping off mum and dad shareholders. All of this had a sobering effect, namely keep your feet on the ground, stick to the knitting, work hard and worship cash flow. Since that stressful but adrenaline pumping beginning the company now employs over 600 people and is now working for major mining houses at over a dozen locations in Australia, east Africa and WesternEurope and the National bank is again our banker. On this basis I consider myself qualified for the subject of this speech.

ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE INSTITUTE (MR. J. G. SYMONS) IN PRESENTING THE AWARD TO ELLIOTT SYLVESTER TIMOTHY O'DRISCOLLTim O'Driscoll comes from a mixture of Irish and Scottish stock. His family on the paternal side settled on land in Western Australia in the middle of the last century. His family on the maternal side were part of the W.A. goldfields scenc, including places such as Kanowna, and the Great Fingal mine, near Cue, where his grandfather lies buried.The combination of land and mining environments may perhaps have contributed to an innate interest in geology shared by Tim and his two brothers, all of whom became geologists.Tim showed an early liking for mathematical and geometric subjects, and in his B.Sc. studies at the University of Western Australia he took a major in mathematics along with geology in 1940.His first job was on the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile, and then at Norseman. After serving as a flying boat navigator in the north and south Pacific theatres in World War II he returned to Kalgoorlie and thence to Broken Hill.

"Mining has still today high potential for improvement in the exploitation efficiency. Especially low-grade ores have very low recoveries. In Cu bioleaching operations from porphyry copper deposits extraction of only five and 15 per cent with maximum of 40 per cent are reached. This means that 60–95 per cent of the resource is not exploited. Consequently, any metal not extracted will end up in the waste material, therefore increasing the risk of environmental pollution. This inefficiency is mainly due to the use of element concentrations for decision-making on the daily basis of a mining operation (eg cut-off ore grade, acid-base accounting – ABA). If, instead, quantitative mineralogical and geochemical data together with information on the bioleaching behaviour of the ore assemblage (the biogeometallurgical approach), is used for decision-making right from the beginning of the exploitation, higher recoveries and less environmental impact can be achieved, ie an increase in sustainability can be reached.CITATION:Dold, D, 2016. There has been a reduction in overall workforce in the mining industry during the current downturn; a corresponding reduction in fatalities and high potential incidents (HPIs) has not been observed. The same contributing factors can be seen in the vast majority of these incidents. These include inadequate supervision and lack of adequate risk assessment. How management structures, trains and leads an operation can have a great impact on eliminating these factors and reducing the risk of fatalities and HPIs.Contractors now account for 41 per cent of full-time equivalent employees in the Queensland mining workforce, and are disproportionately represented in the majority of fatalities and HPIs. Having a clear strategy for how contractors are integrated into the workforce is crucial. Rio Tinto Iron Ore is currently working towards finalising comprehensive Native Title land access agreements, which cover all of the current eleven mines and infrastructure owned and operated by the company in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Critically, the agreements represent a mutual commitment to a long-term relationship and address many areas of concern by promoting indigenous enterprise, well-being and regional development opportunities. Our objectives in the process are to obtain the informed consent of the traditional owners for our Pilbara expansions while providing benefits to them in a way which provides lasting and substantial improvements to health, education, housing and real jobs in the mainstream economy.   To facilitate the agreement negotiations, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) proceeded in 2005 to research and design a specific strategy around Aboriginal relations and local community engagement in the Pilbara. Wherever we operate, Rio Tinto follows a fairly simple formula in working with communities, which is comprehensively aligned to local context.   This presentation provides an overview of Rio Tinto Iron Ore's community engagement strategy in Western Australia's Pilbara region. It will also explore the establishment of regional standards on employment, business development and contracting that have been developed to ensure Indigenous people are engaged in the development of their region and are able to contribute to supporting the growth and development of mining in the area with the expectation that there is prosperity for all. The steel industry accounts for 14 per cent of domestic CO2 emission in Japan, and iron ore sintering process occupies approximately three per cent. While Fe content in iron ore is gradually decreasing. So, the amount of concentrated iron ore will increase in the future. We have focused on magnetite concentrate as sinter materials, because magnetite can be easily magnetically beneficiated. However, it is experienced that blending magnetite ore resulted in increasing Fe2+ component in the iron ore sinter, which results in lower reducibility. Therefore, promoting the oxidation reaction from magnetite to hematite in the sintering process is countermeasure for reducibility. In addition, this promotion causes increase of oxidation heat, which results in high sinter strength and reduction of coke. It is assumed that the oxidation of magnetite tends to proceed in the cooling stage, where the oxygen partial pressure increases after the combustion of fine coke, but there are few studies on the effect of heat profile, especially cooling path. The purpose of this study is to design the effective sintering heat profile to promote oxidation of magnetite ore, especially, to investigate the effect of cooling path on sintered ore microstructure. In this study, magnetite ore and magnetite reagent were respectively mixed with calcium carbonate reagent. Then the mixed samples were pressed and formed into cylindrical tablets for simulating the adhesive layer of a pseudo particle. Through examining influence of maximum temperature and cooking rate on oxidation reaction of magnetite, we confirmed that the oxidation reaction of magnetite is suppressed at above 1350°C for maximum temperature, compared to 1300°C. Sintering at lower temperature is desirable because hematite is stable below 1350°C in the Fe2O3-CaO phase diagram.

For a geometallurgical program to be successful, linkage must be made between the geologists and geostaticians who understand and model the orebody, the metallurgists who determine the value that can be extracted from the different geometallurgical units, and the mine planners who develop and optimise the plan to extract maximum economic value from the resource. One of the primary purposes of geometallurgical models is in the determination of the economic cut-off between ore and waste. Recognition of the level of confidence required in the estimation of grade, throughput and recovery is critical to the planning of a successful geometallurgical program. It also helps clarify the scope of work needed to mitigate risk at each stage in the development of a new mine projectThis presentation provides some of the author’s experience with development and application of geometallurgical models for existing base metal operations. It discusses how geological units defined by lithology, structure, alteration etc, can be translated into geometallurgical ore types defined by mineralogy, ore hardness, and flotation behaviour. Examples of how these characteristics have been used to estimate key economic parameters such as mill throughput and flotation recovery at two brown-field operations are provided. The first example relates to the modelling of metallurgical performance at Teck’s Red Dog zinc-lead mine in Alaska. Prior to 2000, zinc, lead and silver recoveries from a block of ore at Red Dog were either assumed constant, or were varied according to simplistic models. Throughput was not thought to vary substantially between blocks, so an average value was used for each blended stockpile. It is quite possible that some ore-value blocks were classified as waste, and some waste-value blocks treated as ore, as a result of poor understanding of the true economic cut off across the wide range of ore types observed at Red Dog. After an extensive flotation test program, the first assay-based zinc recovery model was developed for the Main pit reserve in 2003.**This is an abstract only. Visual computing opens the design process to a wider audience and allows rapid communication of mine plans to all stakeholders. The integration of software and hardware technologies that take advantage of a graphical environment will continue to improve both long-term and short-term mine design (Figure 1). A good design must be adaptive to respond to decision changes as the mine develops and more information becomes available. The constraints on mine design predicate careful analysis in order to operate the mine as efficiently and safely as possible.Continuous improvement in mining is assured by developing innovative technologies that target mine survey, drill and blast, modelling, short-term design and pit and stope optimisers. The design life of a mine has to be sufficiently long to ensure the mine is commercially successful, justifying the high start-up capital costs. Being able to execute a plan so that it honours the design realises the rewards of computerised mine planning and the long-term investment in data acquisition.
